There’s a certain kind of French movie that’s a quintessentially French movie: stylish, intellectually engaged, alert to adult emotions and problems. Zlotowski’s stylized depiction of Rachel’s life is overly fastidious. Many creative decisions, from the score to the camera blocking, took me out of the movie. Instead of a complex character processing involved, compound emotions, I saw a talented filmmaker lightly touch upon a range of emotions while also studiously avoiding dramatic clichés and stereotypes. O filme acompanha a vida da professora Rachel (Virginie Efira), não exatamente no ambiente escolar, embora muitas cenas se passem lá, mas numa Paris meio soturna, na sua busca interna para ser mãe.
Com um pai ligado à tradição judia e uma irmã que mais tarde terá uma gravidez indesejada,O filme acompanha a vida da professora Rachel (Virginie Efira), não exatamente no ambiente escolar, embora muitas cenas se passem lá, mas numa Paris meio soturna, na sua busca interna para ser mãe.
Com um pai ligado à tradição judia e uma irmã que mais tarde terá uma gravidez indesejada, vemos o vazio e ao mesmo tempo o lirismo da vida de Rachel se desnudar aos nossos olhos. Sem soar estridente, o filme vai nos conduzindo pelo drama permeado por romances, cenas singelas em família, jantares e encontros leves, mas que no fundo exploram uma camada delicada. Quando ela passa no ginecologista e este lhe diz que ela precisa correr, não há no filme o sentimento de urgência, méritos para o roteirista e para a atuação de Virginie, que souberam ainda assim passar a sensação de corrida contra o tempo.
Cabe aqui salientar que o filme é feminista na medida certa, mas não exatamente de um feminismo explícito da esfera pública, pois traalha com a singularidade do sujeito que se vê quase na obrigação de ser mãe. Temos aqui um estudo do microcosmo de maneira bela mas ao mesmo tempo pertubadora.
A primeira parte do filme narra o romance dela com um rapaz divorciado que já tem uma filha, e embora ela se envolva com a menina, é nítido ai que ela sempre será a outra. A garota, por outro lado, demora para se afeiçoar à nossa protagonista, e claro nesse meio tempo alguns atritos iriam acontecer, quando, por exemplo, durante umas férias, uma senhora aleatória comenta que elas se parecem, e logo em seguida a garota fica clamando pela mãe. O roteiro não soube trabalhar muito bem essa transição da rejeição da filha até o momento em que a filha finalmente estabelece um vínculo com ela (lhe faz um desenho chama por ela, por exemplo). Mas enfim, o receado foi dado, uma projeção da maternidade que não lhe compete.
É o mesmo que acontece quando ela protege um péssimo aluno na escola, oferecendo-lhe não apenas um estágio, mas também lhe comprando roupas e lhe defendendo no conselho de classe da escola. Alías, durante essa cena, ela era quase voto vencido, mas um professor afim dela acaba tomando suas dores e somando a voz em defesa do tal aluno. O problema é que ela não se deixa entregar, inicialmente, pelo professor, pois cria laços de dependência com a filha do outro.
Assim, vemos que esse peso da maternidade é reverberado seja os relacionamentos, seja no campo profissional. É como se houvesse, a todo instante, uma sombra no seu papel social pelo vazio de um filho. Há uma cena linda em particular quando ela briga com o namorado e ele segura na mão dela, a câmera foca nas mãos enquanto dialogam, mostrando toda a dependência emocional daquela mulher.
Quando a sua irmã engravida, o filme vai criando quadros em que explora toda o talento da atriz entre o carinho pela sobrinha e uma ponta de inveja pela gravidez alheia, até o ponto da filha nascer e deixar mais escancarado esse sentimento dúbio.
Toda sua vida gira em torno dessa ambivalência de querer. As cenas finais, com ela se entregando a amores, inclusive recebendo cantada no ex-aluno, mostra uma certa liberdade feminina não condicionada à maternidade, ao mesmo tempo que o desejo de ser mãe ainda não fora totalmente resolvido.
É um filme de múltiplas camadas, muito bem dirigido e atuado, que soube tratar com delicadeza e muitos méritos o peso de ser mulher numa sociedade francesa, centrando-se numa mulher linda, inteligente, independente, mas que ainda carrega o fardo de ser mulher em pleno século XXI. Filme bem necessário para ver que sim, ainda faz sentido falar sobre feminismo na contemporaneidade.… Expand

A strange experience to watch. The films looks and sounds like it should be an intense emotional journey, but I couldn't connect with it on the level that I wanted to.
