At too many points, the script from Kay Oyegun (adapting the novel by Angie Thomas) is uneven: Some story beats move too fast, while others pass too slowly, and there are narrative holes. Still, even with its flaws, On the Come Up — like 2018’s The Hate U Give — offers Black teen girls a voice in cinema that they have rarely had before. Lathan mines that gold, making her debut shine. Sanna Lathan constrói uma história aparentemente inofensiva mas que consegue dialogar com a juventude do século XXI, usando os potenciais do rap, mesmo que para isso possa ser alvo de fãs mais xiitas do gênero.
A obra acompanha a vida da Bri (Jamila C. Gray), que por ser uma garota negra, jáSanna Lathan constrói uma história aparentemente inofensiva mas que consegue dialogar com a juventude do século XXI, usando os potenciais do rap, mesmo que para isso possa ser alvo de fãs mais xiitas do gênero.
A obra acompanha a vida da Bri (Jamila C. Gray), que por ser uma garota negra, já diz muito sobre as pretensões do filme. Afora as óbvias interseccionalidades de gênero, até que as batalhas de rap ficaram boas de acompanhar. A menina tem um passado marcado pela violência, assim como muitos dos seus amigos. Ela então vai tentando encontrar seu caminho, após travar na primeira batalha, ela precisa resgatar forças para dar a volta por cima.
Esses filmes de superação, ou de acreditar no seu próprio potencial, já estão saturados, sabemos disso. Aqui ao menos há um ingrediente a mais, por tratar- de uma menina negra em um ambiente violento e machista. Quando ela enfim vence uma batalha e é convidada a gravar uma música, e canta aquilo de que 90% dos rappers o fazem , ou seja, sobre violência policial, ela passa a ser alvo de discriminação de uma forma desproporcional.
Não saberia dizer ao certo o quanto a situação é forçada, mas a bem da verdade é que o filme utiliza muito bem os marcadores identitários para passar sua mensagem. E há espaço para todos aqui, até mesmo um casal de amigos gays.
Também não sei dizer ao certo o quanto soou natural. Mas o fato é que as batalhas são um tanto mornas, mas o suficiente para garantir a diversão, e um filme que acaba sendo muito mais good vibes do que pretende, passando uma mensagem de esperança que é muito bem vinda em tempos de violência. Isso pode ter deixado o filme clean demais, até mesmo inocente, mas se olharmos com um filtro para que a obra seja apreciada por um público menos de idade, até que ficou adequado.
Portanto, não espere aqui algo mais visceral do que o normal. É inclusive clichê. Se por um lado isso não torna o filme memorável, por outro, pelo parco material que existe, deixa tudo muito mais interessante em se tratando do multiculturalismo nas cidades grandes.… Expand
