It focuses on the three stories of Sheriff Ed Bell, played by Tommy Lee Jones, Anton Chigurh a psychopathic murderer, played by Javier Bardem, and Llewelyn Moss, a welder who had stumbled upon 2 million dollars worth of drug money, played by Josh Brolin.

The backbone of the plot itself has been used before but the slow pacing of the film allows the viewer to submerge themselves in the struggle of Jones and Brolin as they are hunted by and pursue Bardem's character. Bardem fabulously portrays Chigurh as an almost unpredictable yet rational killer intent on collecting the 2 million dollars collected by Brolin and killing anyone in his way. In one of his last scenes the viewer is allowed however to see a small amount of uncertain reasoning in how he kills.

The pacing, as well as excellent camerawork and sets creates a wonderful atmosphere in which the viewer can allow themselves to comfortably be submerged into while they enjoy this cinematic masterpiece.

In the end, this film can be enjoyed by all as long as they are patient enough to let a story be told.

No Country for Old Men is as brilliant a movie you'll see from the past decade. The visual beauty and lack of score pulls us into a tense, anxious and deeply disturbed atmosphere, dragging us through sunny landscapes so bleak that just by watching the film, you'll put your soul at hazard. Tommy Lee Jones opens the film with a monologue where he talks about how criminals have changed (or dare I say evolved) to a point where he no longer understands them. The film draws attention to this idea through the character Anton Chigurh. He's a criminal who'll outrightly kill anyone who brings him inconvenience. But Chigurh's a much more complex character. Although it's never quite revealed why he wants the satchel of money, one can reasonably argue that he wants it because it would aid his survival (same can be said for Josh Brolin's Lewellyn). But what makes Chigurh different is that he believes following the rules and morals set by society don't really help you survive. Rather they're shackles. Chigurh's morals are decided by the toss of a coin. He'll kill an innocent person who's brought him no inconvenience only if the coin permits. In other words, Chigurh believes in a random and chaotic world and for the most part it seems as though he's the person who decides others' destiny through chance. But the Coens make it clear that Chigurh is no divine/ supernatural figure. He too is subject to random events (as witnessed when he crashes his car). But how do you categorise a person like that? A person who is so dispassionate and mechanical but still believes in an ideology (or a lack of ideology). He's not a nihilist. Tommy Lee Jones' Sheriff doesn't get it. He doesn't want to chase a killer he doesn't understand. He doesn't want to be some hero, he just wants to retire before something hazardous happens to him. The genius of No Country for Old Men lies in the way it escapes banality and tightens its grip as it progresses. By the time its over, you'll be all out breath feeling as though you've just spiralled into the seventh circle of hell. It pulls you out not by heroism but by capitulation.
At the beginning, Tommy Lee Jones is askes himself - how do I make sense of a crazy, violent and unstable world that has lost all its bearings? Ultimately the film's bleak and melancholy answer is - You can't.

And for a common movies watcher, this film is just slow and boring, It has beautiful acting, a flawless script, and it's certainly original, but I simply didn't enjoy the story it tells, even when it can get you really engrossed in the plot. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No Country for Old Men was violent. I cringed several times. Usually that genre is not my cup of tea, yet here it managed to convey the sense of urgency, the psychopathic nature lying inside Anton. How far is too far for 2 million dollars?

The moment Llewelyn gets caught up in this mess of a crime, he is never getting out alive. His hands have soiled the crime scene and that is enough cuase for death – by a cattle stungun of all weapons. No Country for Old Men is a thriller and a crime, but the overlying idea seems to be introspection into these characters involved in a convoluted circle of violence.

Whatever you do, don't get caught in Anton's path – he will stop at nothing, despite his "principles." Killing may be his sport, but everyone has got to have rules. Another standout by the Coen brothers, a pair who have produced higher quality than probable by a coin toss.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of those movies where you really have to pay attention to what's going on in order to understand why the characters are doing what they are doing. Otherwise, you are going to be very confused. I was, too. Though, once I realized what was happening, the movie instantly got better. Javier Bardem, Tommy lee Jones and Josh Brolin are excellent in their roles. Bardem steals the show, Brolin is the hero, but Jones should have gotten more screen time. He was just simply that cop that's in a few scenes who's going after the bad guy, whereas the entire rest of the film is just the villain chasing the hero, plotting the hero's death (Brolin does die in this movie). Even though the ending is disappointing, the rest of the film is excellent. As can be expected with a movie with a psychopathic main villain, a lot of innocent people are killed in order for Bardem to get to Brolin, but it's kind of the point. Overall, despite a disappointing ending and some unnecessary deaths, this movie deserved to be the Oscar winner it was. Expand

However it is a great movie, I'd go as far to say it is my definition of a flawed masterpiece(the only other movie I've given that definition to is The Magnificent Ambersons). So why do I call it a flawed masterpiece rather than a masterpiece full stop? Well actually right up to the last twenty minutes, the film was the latter rather than the former. If the last twenty minutes had not felt like a completely different movie, it would've stayed like that. As is the case with all the Coen Brothers' movies, No Country for Old Men is very well made with impressive cinematography, editing and settings. The story is compelling, the direction superb and the script most of the time taut, funny, thrilling and exciting. Josh Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones are excellent in this film, but if I have to give an award to best performance of the film, it would be Javier Bardem in a villainous role that is menacing and chillingly effective. Overall, a great movie but due to the final twenty minutes it just loses out to that extra something. 9/10 Bethany Cox Expand

No Country For Old Men is the Coen Brother's homage to Peckinpah, featuring a muted and somewhat distorted historical piece of storytelling.
The main crux of the movie is the cat and mouse engagement of a Vietnam veteran (Josh Brolin), who stumbles across a drug deal gone awry..... And a Mafia hitman (Javier Bardem) who is unleashed upon him in order to recover the $2 million that Brolin finds at the scene.
On both their heels is a soon to retire county Sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones) who suspects there is more going on than what those around him suspect.

From a film-making perspective this is the Coen's at their best. Every aspect of the production is impeccable, and the lack of a musical score heightens the suspense when other directors would have imposed some kind of background music to 'tell' the audience something suspenseful is happening.
The acting across the board is fantastic. Tommy Lee Jones is as gravelly as always, Josh Brolin delivers the best performance of his career up to that point, but it's Javier Bardem who steals the film in terms of acting. His portrayal of the seemingly invincible hitman whose own motives are clouded and contradictory is a real revelation. Unfortunately his position as THE go to foreign star/co-star has been usurped by Christoph Waltz, and it's likely he'll simply fade back into the smaller films he starred in before.

But, for all the positives, there are some big negatives. The main issue I had with the film is that it feels like a collection of set pieces joined together, and it's been noted that the narrative of the book on which the film is based does flesh out some of the character development the film completely omits. It's like the screenplay was written to include title cards along the way, announcing each 'chapter' so as to let the audience understand that there are intended gaps in the narrative which the director is highlighting. Without that highlighting, things happen and you're not sure how or why the film leaps from character to character, because they're not interlinked.
The other big problem is that there is very little exposition, meaning the viewer has little comprehension of where people are going, or how certain characters figure certain things out. For a film in which the tension is defined by the actions of the main characters, it created questions in my mind surrounding people's actions, when it would have made a lot more sense to do something else.

Overall though, this is a great film. Switch off your deep-thinking sensibilities, and roll along with three completely different men, each trying to figure out what they need to do next, whilst marveling at the imagery and depth of what is captured on the film.

What we have here is a superbly acted written and plotted cat and mouse game between a hitman and a cowboy. Everyone here does a great job but hats off to Javier bardem as an original villain with a purpose not to just kill but kill with a purpose. Nothing goes right for any one in this film. All the character meet there fate in some form or another. There is an underlying theme about how nowadays the sheriff ed tom bell the villain and Llewellyn moss might not have a place and have dreams of something different. The ending may leave one frustrated upon fist viewing but once you do your research you will find yourself appreciate it a little more. This film has violence and it is gritty but the coen brothers have decided to favor heavy though provoking themes over the violence which results in a deeply magnificent intelligent cat and mouse thriller across west Texas. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In the best sense possible, No Country for Old Men is unlike any movie that I have ever seen. This neo-Western thriller, set in Texas in 1980, is concerned with hunter Llewelyn Moss’ quest to survive, after making a discovery which put him on the radar of psychopathic killer Anton Chigurh. A thrilling game of cat-and-mouse plays out between the two, and the ensuing violence pushes grizzled sheriff Ed Tom Bell to his breaking point. The way in which the story plays out is simply brilliant. The lack of score in this movie pushes you to pay closer attention to what the characters are experiencing; as a result, it feels as though experience this movie’s events rather than just watching them play out on a screen, thereby making it more enthralling than it would have been otherwise. The intensity of certain individual scenes will leave an impression in your mind, such as the scene with Chigurh and the gas attendant, or the scene at the motel in which Chigurh and Moss narrowly escape each other. The movie’s ending is seemingly anticlimactic, but quite powerful - which is part of what makes this movie unique. There are many other excellent aspects to this film, including the cinematography as well as the performances. The standout is Javier Bardem as the ruthless Chigurh. There are few movies that deserve the “masterpiece” title, but No Country for Old Men is undoubtedly one of those movies. Expand

The Coen Brothers fail to disappoint as usual. From Bardem's chilling portrayal of an uninhibited murderer down to the details even of the set, the characters work together perfectly. This is an amazing example of what could almost be considered an anti-film: no substantial resolution, no resolution at all for some characters, just the viewer left with their perception of what might have been. Not for the faint of heart; a challenging movie because it refuses to spoon-feed you a classic hero-gets-the-girl or bad-guy-gets-caught stereotype. A film to be remembered. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The ending of the movie was disappointing and abrupt. The murder of Llewelyn was anti-climatic and odd since he is the main character in this movie. The movie has many scenes of cat and mouse situations that definitely builds a lot of suspense and intensity. Unfortunately, there is no momentum carried over to other scenes and main characters die unexpectedly. If the last 30 minutes provided closure, I would have given an 8 score instead. I probably wouldn't watch this movie again if I knew about the ending and the slow plot build-up and even slower problem resolution or lack thereof. I did think the authenticity with the Texan accent was there; however, I had to use subtitles to follow all the dialogue as there is a lot of slang and I just couldn't follow the accent. Expand

Its a very strong film, violent and a little difficult to digest. The reason for the title is not immediately evident but it ends up being perceived with the progress of the narrative. Beginning in a very elegant way, this one develops in a intensely and densely, constructing suspense around the three central characters. The ending, however, seems a little too sudden after so much dramatic tension, and so we get a little dissatisfied and expecting something more that never comes. The central characters are assured by Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones and Javier Bardem. The three of them were excellent, each in their own way, but Bardem stood out as a villain, with a deep, somber interpretation but holding the entire film around him. I believe that with this film Bardem has proved himself to be a great talent and has a promising future if he knows how to run his career well. The leadership is assured by the Brethren Cohen, in a dense register and away from the sarcastic comedies to which they have accustomed us. Expand

Not only were these recurring items powerful, and significant, but they also were well-interlaced with the movie and narrative, feeling natural and almost necessary. The choices that were made when making this movie were all the correct ones, especially the choice to not use any soundtrack at all, allowing unaltered intensity and fear to fester in each audience member. The major themes of this movie are; the inevitability of ageing, and its restricting nature, as well as the unavoidable nature of fate. The reincorporation that this movie utilizes is truly astonishing and only becomes more so with each watch. Every line of dialogue, every frame included and excluded, all have their purpose, and the intent is very clear from the moment the first scene starts, to when the credits start rolling. This is an example of impeccable storytelling.
Watch this one, then watch it again, and maybe watch it for the third time. It's just that good.

Mmmm, violence and death. With a protagonist like this, even worse movie would be rated "green". I can not imagine any other actor fullfiling this role better than chosen cast, good job.

Yesterday evening I wanted to go into the matter completely chilled, but the film starts off directly with brutal action.

Basically, it's about a game of cat and mouse between different people, especially between Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) and Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) after a drug deal by various cartels has failed and the protagonist happens to come by and take the money with him. Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) also plays an important role again and again and the film starts with his narrative words.

Actually it was world class from start to finish. Very bizarre characters, with Anton Chigurh standing out. This figure was just completely unpredictable and also really frightening (with his nail gun and this peculiar shotgun), and had not felt as uncomfortable as with this figure for a long time. Very strong cinema as Javier Bardem put across. With his looks (e.g. at the roadside at the chicken guy before he stops) he freezes the pulp.

Not only the actors, but also the entire production contributes to a grandiose, gloomy mood. The atmosphere of the film makes you sit in the very front of the chair and the funny thing is that the film has no spoken word at all in some places, but that also increases the tension of the film so much. But also the spoken words are absolutely citation-capable and there are a lot of bizarre and well written dialogues.

Anton Chigurh: 1958. It's been traveling twenty-two years to get here. And now it's here. And it's either heads or tails. And you have to say. Call it.
Gas Station Proprietor: Look, I need to know what I stand to win.
Anton Chigurh: Everything.

The whole scene was just terrific. It's about a coin and the fate associated with it.

This tension, paired with the unpredictability of some characters and the film as a whole, is already masterful in terms of staging and leads to a finale, which throws you through again and leaves you a bit confused. For me it has basically already become a classic and I will definitely see this film one time or another.

Great film and I definitely have to catch up with Fargo, which my parents have been recommending to me for many years.

10/10 nail guns.

Also, the cinematography from Roger Deakins is honestly really good throughout this movie and he captures the scenes pretty well. Finally, the movie's got some very brutal but bloody moments and they're very well done and they hold up quite well. My only negative with this movie would have to be a certain scene where Javier Bardem is chasing after Josh Brolin and you've got no clue on where Javier Bardem is shooting from. Overall, the movie is really well made with a great plot, some brilliant actors, great cinematography and some brutal but bloody fight scenes from start to finish. Expand

I can't say I view this one positively. I clearly don't get it, which I'm fine with.

I'm all for films that don't play it so straight that it's predictable, but at the same time I'm rarely a fan of films that are so full of themselves to end in such a derisory way. Listen, that's probably harsh as it is still a good flick no doubt, but 'No Country for Old Men' is highly unsatisfactory and highly uninspiring for me.

I will say that I have no issues with the cast whatsoever, they are all fantastic. Javier Bardem is awesome, easily the star, and Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin and Woody Harrelson are all top value. Kelly Macdonald and Garret Dillahunt are also involved, I like them too. Stephen Root, Mr. 'L for Love' himself, as well. Away from the onscreen bunch, the cinematography is superb.

It's the story. I didn't get what I wanted from it, at all. All the ingredients are there for a 10/10 film, that's the level I was expecting it to reach based on the opening half or so. The second half though... super disappointing! So many underwhelming choices. Such a waste of a strong cast... 'The Counselor'-esque. Bardem is also in that, sorry my dude!

The fact I'm still giving this what I consider to be a positive rating shows how much the conclusion frustrated me. This had top tier written all over it but it somehow messed it up as it went by... and I'm not usually one to dig out a film's ending.

In my defence, even some reviews (many, in fact) from people who love the film mention that the ending isn't perfect so I guess it just comes down to how the final moments sit with you. For me, evidently not good!

Don't wait for the event here. The film maintains a slow pace. Right at the beginning, one of the characters does one thing to us, because of which he actually gets into all those problems, and that's what the whole film is about. The main villain Anton Chigurh is great and in my eyes he is the main star of this film and the scenes with him were the best. As I mentioned, the film has a slow pace and that is the biggest problem for me here. Here and there I thought it would just take some action. I'm not saying I'm bored, but maybe the sheriff's line didn't interest me much personally, and the scenes with him were a nuisance than a pleasure in my eyes. I criticized a lot of things here, but I still liked the film. Just probably not as much as other people, because it has a really wonderful evaluation, which I unfortunately can't sign up to. Even so, a good film for me, which I can recommend. Expand

This, along with any Tarantino film under the sun, is one of the movies film students pride themselves on studying. I'm no film student, but the mature story and interesting dynamic of the characters throughout did grip me and hold my attention to the end. It kind of feels pointless to praise this movie in any way as you could go and watch any of those smarmy video essays and they'd be able to do it more justice. Worth the watch if you like mature and grounded stories. Expand
