What we have here is a superbly acted written and plotted cat and mouse game between a hitman and a cowboy. Everyone here does a great job but hats off to Javier bardem as an original villain with a purpose not to just kill but kill with a purpose. Nothing goes right for any one in this film. All the character meet there fate in some form or another. There is an underlying theme about how nowadays the sheriff ed tom bell the villain and Llewellyn moss might not have a place and have dreams of something different. The ending may leave one frustrated upon fist viewing but once you do your research you will find yourself appreciate it a little more. This film has violence and it is gritty but the coen brothers have decided to favor heavy though provoking themes over the violence which results in a deeply magnificent intelligent cat and mouse thriller across west Texas. Hats off to the coen brothers for making such a great film Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In the best sense possible, No Country for Old Men is unlike any movie that I have ever seen. This neo-Western thriller, set in Texas in 1980, is concerned with hunter Llewelyn Moss’ quest to survive, after making a discovery which put him on the radar of psychopathic killer Anton Chigurh. A thrilling game of cat-and-mouse plays out between the two, and the ensuing violence pushes grizzled sheriff Ed Tom Bell to his breaking point. The way in which the story plays out is simply brilliant. The lack of score in this movie pushes you to pay closer attention to what the characters are experiencing; as a result, it feels as though experience this movie’s events rather than just watching them play out on a screen, thereby making it more enthralling than it would have been otherwise. The intensity of certain individual scenes will leave an impression in your mind, such as the scene with Chigurh and the gas attendant, or the scene at the motel in which Chigurh and Moss narrowly escape each other. The movie’s ending is seemingly anticlimactic, but quite powerful - which is part of what makes this movie unique. There are many other excellent aspects to this film, including the cinematography as well as the performances. The standout is Javier Bardem as the ruthless Chigurh. There are few movies that deserve the “masterpiece” title, but No Country for Old Men is undoubtedly one of those movies. Expand

The Coen Brothers fail to disappoint as usual. From Bardem's chilling portrayal of an uninhibited murderer down to the details even of the set, the characters work together perfectly. This is an amazing example of what could almost be considered an anti-film: no substantial resolution, no resolution at all for some characters, just the viewer left with their perception of what might have been. Not for the faint of heart; a challenging movie because it refuses to spoon-feed you a classic hero-gets-the-girl or bad-guy-gets-caught stereotype. A film to be remembered. Expand

A grim hunter & prey story about a man who came to wrong place in worst moment. Javier Bardem remarks as the clever, cold- hearted hit man, so Tommy Lee Jones as the tired, decaying sheriff. The sequence of mexican banda is cool.

Not only were these recurring items powerful, and significant, but they also were well-interlaced with the movie and narrative, feeling natural and almost necessary. The choices that were made when making this movie were all the correct ones, especially the choice to not use any soundtrack at all, allowing unaltered intensity and fear to fester in each audience member. The major themes of this movie are; the inevitability of ageing, and its restricting nature, as well as the unavoidable nature of fate. The reincorporation that this movie utilizes is truly astonishing and only becomes more so with each watch. Every line of dialogue, every frame included and excluded, all have their purpose, and the intent is very clear from the moment the first scene starts, to when the credits start rolling. This is an example of impeccable storytelling.
Watch this one, then watch it again, and maybe watch it for the third time. It's just that good.

Everyone always talks about how good Javier Bardem is, and rightly so. He is terrifying. But I wanted to mention just how good this movie is on a technical level. The editing, the sound design, is all masterful.

But I wanted to mention just how good this movie is on a technical level.

The editing, the sound design, is all masterful.
Roger Deakins cinematography is, of course, gorgeous.
The lack of music is perfect.

This movies has possibly my favorite scene transition of all time, in which a shot of coin on the ground disloves almost seamlessly into an establishing shot of the desert.
It makes my jaw drop every time.

I could watch this movie all day.
I love eveything about it.

Yesterday evening I wanted to go into the matter completely chilled, but the film starts off directly with brutal action.

Basically, it's about a game of cat and mouse between different people, especially between Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) and Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) after a drug deal by various cartels has failed and the protagonist happens to come by and take the money with him. Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) also plays an important role again and again and the film starts with his narrative words.

Actually it was world class from start to finish. Very bizarre characters, with Anton Chigurh standing out. This figure was just completely unpredictable and also really frightening (with his nail gun and this peculiar shotgun), and had not felt as uncomfortable as with this figure for a long time. Very strong cinema as Javier Bardem put across. With his looks (e.g. at the roadside at the chicken guy before he stops) he freezes the pulp.

Not only the actors, but also the entire production contributes to a grandiose, gloomy mood. The atmosphere of the film makes you sit in the very front of the chair and the funny thing is that the film has no spoken word at all in some places, but that also increases the tension of the film so much. But also the spoken words are absolutely citation-capable and there are a lot of bizarre and well written dialogues.

Anton Chigurh: 1958. It's been traveling twenty-two years to get here. And now it's here. And it's either heads or tails. And you have to say. Call it.
Gas Station Proprietor: Look, I need to know what I stand to win.
Anton Chigurh: Everything.

The whole scene was just terrific. It's about a coin and the fate associated with it.

This tension, paired with the unpredictability of some characters and the film as a whole, is already masterful in terms of staging and leads to a finale, which throws you through again and leaves you a bit confused. For me it has basically already become a classic and I will definitely see this film one time or another.

Great film and I definitely have to catch up with Fargo, which my parents have been recommending to me for many years.

10/10 nail guns.

Well, from my opinion, I thought the ending was neat. I overhear people walking out of the theatre saying, "where did the oscars come from.." or "that ending was awful." Well what did you expect, for Ed Tom Bell to catch Chigurh and arrest him and happily ever after. The ending of the film would basically end how it would in real life because people have to realize that the bad guy doesn't always win. And it was kind of strange, but people who hated the ending won't shutup about the fact that the film didn't turn out how you expected. Well, the Coen brothers surprise us with a weird ending. Do you think that the movie should've been neatly wrapped up with an expected ending? Apparently no, the Coen brothers ended it how it would in real life which was kind of cool from my point of view. I thought No Country was a very good movie with suspenseful moments and an exciting premice. It's neat how the title fits in with the story how its no country for old men. Though in the end, you actually cared about the characters and overall, No Country for Old Men was definitely worth my day. Expand

It was, as many critics have said, one of the more bleak, nihilistic stories in a long time. I guess some people expect certain things from a film, and when their anticipations aren't met, well, the film must be bad. What an uninteresting moviegoing experience that must be. For me, when a film defies my expectations, I experience what's called "surprise" (ala when protagonist is killed 2/3 before end, when film stops abruptly and bad guy wins, etc), a generally positive and entertaining experience, which forces me to re-think what have seen so far and/or expect to see, and makes me wonder what the purpose of such a cinematic twist could be. I believe this is the crucial moment where audiences split: being asked to think too much. As the credits rolled at the showing I saw, a loud guy in front of me told his girlfriend, "How do you pick these movies? Jesus Christ, you pick the worst movies." It irritated me, but it didn't surprise me. It's almost seems that for a given cultural product within art or film to be outstanding, the majority of the population has to really dislike it. And that's a shame. Even if the impeccable technical merits of the film were lost on someone, and the stellar writing, direction and acting were all overlooked, one cannot deny that the ideology that the filmmakers present provides the viewer with one hell of a tough, haunting knot of questions to tease apart for hours and days later. That's what made it great for me, that the film kept going even after it ended. It wasn't neat and easy, but challenging and unsettling. If you need a film to assure you that everyone lived happily ever after, then please don't see this film. If you don't mind being entrusted with some of the moral and intellectual heft of a film to mill around on your own, and conclude on your own, like a grown-up, then you are in for a treat. Expand

Yes, most definitely. But to suggest that this is a bad movie, or that it didn't deserve its Oscars... Well, that's just flat out wrong-headed. This film, based on the excellent story by Cormac McCarthy, is *exceedingly* well written, well acted, well paced, beautifully photographed, well edited and well directed. The three leads - Bardem, Jones and Brolin - are outstanding. This film does not -- as some suggest -- glorify violence or nihilism. It absolutely does NOT glorify or condone the cold-blooded actions of the killer (actually, killers plural). Dig just a little deeper, all you nay-sayers, and you may understand the central point of McCarthy's book and of this excellent film. Then again, maybe this is just a bit too profound and clear-headed a morality tale (and character study) for many viewers. There are one or two scenes alone that are worth the price of admission ... e.g., the pit bull chasing Brolin's character down the turbulent river, closing on him as relentlessly as Death. Amazing stuff. Expand

The Coen's have cut all the quircky, funny characters and odd humor and go straight for the narrative jugular and made helplessness a way of life for anyone who even sees Anton Chigurh, the most ruthless cinema villian since Hannibal Lector. Javier Bardem now has his signature role. In playing evil incarnate, he will probably win an Oscar. Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin are excellent but its Bardem that you can't get out of your head. It's almost impossible to tell a story accurately with such little dialogues and without a narrator voice, but the Coen brothers accomplished it fantastically. A perfect cast till minor roles and Javier Bardem makes one of the best film villains of all time! The style of the film is absolutely unique and the mixture of western, thriller and satire is excellent. The ending is realistic and leaves a couple of questions open, which makes you think a lot about the film afterwards. Everything seems sophisticated, even how scenes succeed on one another and that's what is so fantastic about this movie. Everything that happens in No Country For Old Men keeps your eyes peeled on the TV screen, even if it's just normal dialogue. I.e. the showdown between Chigurh and Moss, which is one of the most thrilling scenes I've seen lately or the Chigurh's conversation with the gas station proprietor which is absolutely awesome.
