Really well made, a totally believable conceit. Gyllenhall is great as an antihero - and Russo plays against him very nicely. a damn good watch late at night.

This is not just a thriller and Rear Window ripoff but a nice commentary on the media and violence, which is explored through the disturbing and intriguing Louis Bloom. Jake Gyllenhall does a great job in the role providing a character that is both revolting in his obsession with violence and media as well as his detachment from it but is also intruging with his passion and obsession. I won’t blame you if you find this movie revolting as it is messed up but for me I could and was entertained by this film. Expand

Scenarios are intense as we watch our lead Gyllenhaal run into dangerous situations that could land him in prison or in the grave. His motives aren't exactly disagreeable, but his methods are. The movie has a lot to say about modern journalism tactics.

The whole film succeeds thanks to how well the character Louis Bloom is written and how well he is portrayed by Gyllenhaal who gives another fantastic performance. He is a character who is equally creepy, brilliant, deranged, and likable. It's this combination that makes the character do things you won't agree with, but still keep you rooting for him at the same time.

I have to give special praise for how the film is shot. The gritty, almost grainy look of the world makes it look like one of those crime-thrillers from the 80's. For my fellow gamers out there I guess you could compare it's look to that of Hotline Miami. It gives the film a touch of a retro vibe.

"Nightcrawler" is dark, creepy, and at times vicious. It's a lot like it's protagonist in that respect. It's a wild and smart ride. One that you should take if you are in the mood for a thought-provoking piece of entertainment. It's unlike anything we've seen in a while.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Excellent acting from Gyllenhall, playing an ambitious character who wants to get ahead, by any means necessary.
Landing the role of a "Nightcrawler" he is first to most criminal scenes as reported by police scanners.
Great photography, some of the camera shots during car chases were stunning, as was the driving. None of this **** where the other cars on the road all drive at 15mph while the main car dodges carefully in between. These shots were full on.
One of the very few films where I was left wanting more at the end.
Looking forward to Nightcrawler 2. : )

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Jake Gyllenhaal acts his ass of in this. He plays a creepy sociopathic role so incredibly well that I would have felt weird being on set with him during the filming of this. Nightcrawler shows the progression of a weird and determined person into a conniving monster who uses his power to get exactly what he wants. This movie is tense and exciting, following Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed as they patrol the night streets looking for gruesome scenes to sell to the news. The slimey workings of the news, and the lack of boundaries for Jake Gyllenhaal make the two a perfect pair. Expand

Creepy and unhinged, Gyllenhaal's performance in the lead was great, as you truly believe every word he says and all of his mannerisms and oddities. However, to me, one of the films best features was the cinematography, in particular the lighting. In line with other great films that capture Los Angeles at night such as Drive and Collateral, Nightcrawler is beautifully shot and lit. Another major plus for this one would have to be the way it operates as a biting criticism of the television news industry. Showing them as morally questionable and willing to do anything for ratings, this one certainly shows the shady side of television and raises many questions that should be answered, such as the morality of showing some of the footage shown. Overall, Nightcrawler is a thrilling, intense, and very creepy, experience that should help propel both Gilroy and Gyllenhaal to further success. Expand

The film is pretty different to most of the films out there and Jake Gyllenhaal is fantastic in the role. He totally disappears in the character and gives one of his best performances to date, the best for many. He is definitely on a roll lately, after Prisoners, Enemy and a couple of upcoming very attractive films. He hadn´t enjoyed such acclaim since the Brokeback Mountain days. However, as good as this is, it lacks that push or x-factor that would make the film worth of an 8 or a 9. Hopefully we will get better and better bodies of work from this director. Expand

Nightcrawler is a great thriller movie that’s highly original, and it’s the desire for having a basic job and the success that follows that truly makes this movie incredible.

The first great aspect of this movie is the main character; Louis Bloom, he’s annoying but surprisingly funny. Jake Gyllenhaal is a fantastic actor and I have never seen him so passionate as in Nightcrawler. You can really feel the main character and his strive for success. It’s very entertaining to watch all the risky choices he takes. Therefor is this movie not boring. It’s fun to see media from a different point of view. That’s one of the aspects that I really love about Nightcrawler. Other great things are of course the great soundtrack and the action sequences, and the movie is overall better than what I expected. It’s also an almost flawless movie!

The only thing that bothers me is the ending. It’s a bit to rash and I expected more from it. But it’s still a great film and one of the best of 2014.

Nightcrawler gets a 7.5/10.

Nightcrawler is one of those films, but it also entertains greatly with its fantastic performances, outlook on modern media, and a great tone. Elephant in the room time: Jake Gyllenhaal. I've heard buzz lately about Jake's recent outstanding performances. He has surely stepped up his game, and Nightcrawler delivers with another superior performance from him. Here, he plays a sociopath hell-bent on getting all that he wants in his job. He really gives off a creepy, disturbing, and unsettling tone playing this character. I more than look forward to his future movies. Rene Russo is nearly as good as Gyllenhaal. There's an actor here I don't think I've seen before: Riz Ahmed. While he does have some glimpses of very good acting, I think there was lost potential with his role, meaning he could've been better or even easily replaced. I see potential with him, though, I'll give him that. Even though Michael Hyatt's role and appearances were brief, she was incredibly good. The main plot here is that Jake's character works in the LA freelance crime journalism territory. He goes up to crime scenes, films it, and sells the footage to news channel broadcasts. With this, Nightcrawler delves into dark, mature territory at times, which I welcomed. How far Jake's character will go just might astound you. The movie also has it's fair share of jaw-dropping moments. The movie mixes thriller, suspense, and drama to great results. The flaws here aren't too big, but noticeable. The movie sometimes objectifies logic and equals to annoying measures. I also was unsatisfied with the ending and the scene before that final scene. The pacing problems were so, so slight, but it is worth mentioning that the first half's pacing will differ from parts of the second half's, which irritated me at only a few points. Nightcrawler is a great movie, even a bit above great. It just misses my 9 out of 10, SO CLOSE. It may not be in my Top 10 movies of the year, but it will be one I will surely remember. Expand

But it seems the last couple of years have really been his time to shine, with excellent performances in the awesome Prisoners, the bizarre Enemy, and now this exquisitely wrought thriller.

The film works brilliantly, not just because of its spot-on portrayal of the callousness and demented nature of American journalism, but because Dan Gilroy personifies it in the form of an actual sociopath. Gyllenhaal's haunting performance is so compelling that, in spite of his character's dreadful actions and creepy demeanour, one actually feels just a little bit pleased for him when he succeeds. In spite of the murders, accidents, attacks and other violent acts commited throughout the film, it was that little spark of sympathy for the main character that frightened me most.

Nightcrawler is a superb film that boasts a talented cast, wonderfully dark twists and electrifying tension.

Here we have a sociopath for the digital age. A Taxi Driver for the early 21st Century. Louis Bloom might have been born yesterday, just before taking an online course in Small Business Management, the new way to self-educate, without the petty annoyances of human contact and interaction. Every basic lesson he absorbed is put to the test with the obsessive solitary singular purpose of succeeding. Jake Gyllenhaal immerses himself in the role with psychotic stupor. He speaks with the same forward-plotting conviction whether tossing about obvious clichés or revealing something brilliant. The perfect entrepreneur. A maniacal detached idiot savant on a ruthless predatory mission. Morality and the legal system are minor roadblocks to dodge, riddles to resolve, sentiments to overcome. His brand of narcissistic psychosis is a genetic mutation that insures the survival of the species. Like an Aryan bulldozer, he cripples and kills the weak, exploiting the flaws in humanity, cannibalizing the limits of civilization, and capitalizing on each opportunity every step of the way, all for his own personal gain. All while intuiting which backs to scratch and/or stab and when. The perfect entrepreneur. The quintessential post-9/11 movie hero. Where Travis Bickle sought to take down corruption to rescue the innocent, Louis Bloom does the opposite, preying on the fallen and severing the social codes and mores that bind us for his own solitary success. American Exceptionalism. Nightcrawler is nanoeconomics in its purest, most wicked and vicious form. I'm sure some may see it not so much as a comment on what ails us but as an inspiration to venture out from, and Bloom as a persistent determined role model to imitate. How-to-Succeed-in Business-Without-Feeling. Humanity is merely a construct that can be subjugated, an apparatus to dismantle, a child's toy for the child that wants it all.

Jake Gyllenhaal, undeniable has shaped himself perfectly in this intriguing, ambitious, eager, greedy yet selfish character, thanks to the good screenplay which should have no problem to get him at least an Oscar nomination. Night crawler is its own animal. It does not resort the to the typical archs and storylines that so many other hollywood films do. You walk away with a serious, topical and important issue that journalism as a whole is faced with.

"Nightcrawler" 10 Scale Rating: 8.5 (Fantastic) ...

The Good: Extremely dark and at times an amusing satire, "Nightcrawler" is an outstanding look at our near-obsession with gore, murder, and crime. It's also a glimpse into the cutthroat world of network news, as well as commentary on business as a whole. Gyllenhaal shines as the lead character and is worthy of every accolade that he has received. The supporting cast (Bill Paxton, Rene Russo, and Riz Ahmed) is exceptional as well and provide the backbone on which the film relies on. Well directed and with the perfect tone, at times you feel guilty watching it ... which means that the director gets his point across.

The Bad: Gyllenhaal's Lou Bloom has zero redeemable qualities. Zero. I understand that that is sort of the point, but it takes away somewhat when the lead character has no soul at all. Not even a sliver of one. Otherwise, the film takes a little while to really get going.

Lou is a systhematic and pragmatic guy who is determined to find a good job and with a simple camera and a lot of boldness he manages to catch Nina's attention and sold her his work. And knowing how much she depends on his images to keep her job, he'll become more and more demanding as the time goes by. He also won't think twice about doing evil things to gain more space on screen. Rene Russo does an amazing job as Nina, such as Riz Ahmed as Rick. Bill Paxton promissed something good at the beginning but he totally vanishes, never to be seen again. Another weak point in the script is the lack of background in the life of Lou. On the other hand, these things don't get in the way of this amazing first film of Dan Gilroy. Nightcrawler is crazy, scary and electricfying. Expand

For instance, there’s a dog, one bred for service. The goal of the breeding is to combine the intelligence of the one dog with the low-key temperament of the other. The risk of the new breed is getting the reverse and having a useless dog. The same applies to movies, such as blending two genres being “thriller” and “comedy.” If executed well, it can land safely. If not, well, the movie ends up becoming a waste of money.

The incontestable film “The Nightcrawler” intertwines both the cruel reality and dark satire into one familiar L.A. setting while starring Gyllenhaal as one of the world’s most dignified sociopaths of America. Money hungry and mastering an unsettling charisma, Lou, a jobless opportunist, displays pomposity through engaging himself into the art of filmography.

Paired together with a homeless potential, Lou and Rick capture the cold truth, stretching beyond the sanitized gore and peril that typically never is broadcast on live news. This action of risking and revealing crime scenes gradually, with each piece after the other, becomes a popular hit, displaying potential for the news show of Nina’s, a worn news director with the same ambitions as Lou of expanding her broadcast out to the world.

Using people to an advantage, and treating the law as a flexible choice, Lou demonstrates how “The Nightcrawler” truly is the perfect breeding, conjoining the pure elements of reality and drama. Excluding Lou and the troublesome lengths he could go to lead himself to success, the movie displays a realistic background and conveys a reasonable amount of action through mundane activities.

This movie never once failed to interrupt the long chain of “what’s going to happen?” running through my mind.

This movie has such an excellent character development, having as protagonist this weird, eccentric guy, that, being desperate for a job, muscles into the world of L.A. crime journalism. The film is fantastic, all the acting is very good, but the one from Gillenhaal is just beautiful. He really knows how to give life to his character, and how to make progress all the way through the film. The script is incredible, everything in the movie makes sense, and everything Gillenhaal says is extremely well thought, there isn't anything out of context and the story is very original. The ambient is very realistic, and you will not want to take your eyes out of the screen. The score, not being extremely good, gets its job done. The movie is excellent. I would really like a sequel. Watch it, without doubt. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Do you ever going into a movie hearing about how great it is and afraid it won’t live up to the hype? I feel that way about a lot of movies when I hear about them from friends, the internet, and various other places. Does Nightcrawler fall under that category? No, definitely not.

The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Louis Bloom. I don’t know any other way to describe his performance besides using an old cliché. Gyllenhaal knocked this character out of the park. At the start of the movie, you get the sense he is a little off. Although he was a criminal, my original thoughts were he was just a misunderstood weirdo. I had no idea what a “nightcrawler” was, so the early parts in the movie did a good job making it seem like a repugnant profession. Throughout the movie, he delivers a perfect performance that develops his character into someone who may actually be a bit psychotic while finding a way to make the profession of a nightcrawler more tasteless than I thought it could be.

When I watch a movie, it is hard to make me feel uncomfortable during certain scenes that are supposed to evoke those feelings. In this movie, scenes of him filming such grisly moments with no remorse for anything made me feel extremely uncomfortable. I don’t know if that is a nod to the acting, directing, editing, sound, or a combination of all of them, but there was a definite discomfort I felt throughout the film because of the character of Louis Bloom.

The movie does a great job of building suspense. It all builds up to a highly climatic ending that is well worth the payoff. I highly recommend this movie to anyone. It is well worth the watch.

It was glitzy, polished, and the story was fleshed out quite well. There were a few slight discontinuities for me near the end, particularly a very forced and altogether useless romantic encounter that I feel the film could have done very much without. Altogether, though, a memorable satire of what it means to bring the news to life, and pull yourself up by the bootstraps. Expand

Jake Gyllenhaal is an adapable character and in "Nightcrawler" his character looked creepy. After a while into the film I got used to the creepiness, but film angles gave reminders.

I like weird, quirky characters so I'd be happy watching him licking stamps for an hour, well probably a minute or so. The big plus with "NightCrawler" is even with all his creep, the character's story is actually possible. Driven, psychotic and a brutal realist, the character is a great role model for success in business. Your boss, my boss this film goes beneath the surface into the murky places of the psyche.

The other 10 reviews explain it well. I loved this film.

Lou, a common thief bent on success, becomes obsessed with having the best camera shots of accidents and emergencies around the city to earn reputation and money. Lou does whatever it takes to make his way to the top including blackmailing news broadcasters and hiring the homeless. Gyllenhaal and Ahmed's performances are excellent and is a pleasure to watch as always. The music score is exceptional providing a threatening atmosphere, inviting dread into the scenes. The cinematography is stunning and reflects the Dan Gilroy's visionary screenplay. The unfortunate downside to this film however, is that the plot is to and extent predictable. Although you don't know exactly what Lou is going to do, the audience is given a rough idea of what Lou is always thinking and we are able to tell fairly quickly what Lou will do in order to achieve success. That being said, its still a very much enjoyable watch and makes you think about how corrupt the media industry can be. Expand

He's acting rationally, he's acting how the system demands him to act, he wants to get big, be the best version of himself after all. He's a prime caricature of today's self-help guides and influencers, that seek a negotiation and a business opportunity in every conversation. Lou is barely human anymore, he is just a tool. He's the product of capitalism thought to its very end, at least on an individual level.
Yet the movie itself kinda lost me in the end, everything is vague and the ending was bitter, but didn't have any subversion or punch to it.
Still a very watchable movie, I was at the edge of my seat and even found myself laughing at times.

However, as long as one can over look the story's obvious absurdities it can be enjoyed as a compelling and superior thriller. Jake Gyllenhaal is superb as the sociopath who opportunistically decides to make a living by filming the misfortunes, injuries and death throes of others, which he then sells to TV. His total disdain for people and human life sets no bounds and this, in turn, leads him to TV news producer Renee Russo. She is fantastic as an ageing last chance producer who becomes entangled in his web. The scenes between them both literally crackle with there own kind of tension and are excellently written. The movie, mainly shot at night, makes excellent use of its L.A. locations, and a couple of set pieces (a home invasion and a restaurant shoot out) are outstanding and demonstrate first rate examples of how to create sustained tension. Flying under the radar, this is a film not to be missed. Expand

This man is emotionally unshakable, relentlessly determined, yet witty and smart, weaving his way through many opposers that are attempting to bring his job down. He will lie, scheme, and dodge his way through the journey of his career in a seemingly deceptive matter in order to be self-sufficient and successful. Jake Gyllenhaal plays an outstanding performance as Lewis, and implants on the mind such an unforgettable face. I am genuinely satisfied with this thriller because of it's gritty concept and talented acting. Expand

As an actor, there aren't much higher achievements than to be able to have the audience so fully engrossed in your character, and pay full attention to every move he makes, trying to study this man, anticipating, but also dreading his eventual fate. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was pretty... interesting?... in the middle of watching the movie I had a weird feeling watching it because of the main character, i can see that there's something wrong with him. His odd behaviour, smilling in the weirdest moments, and when he broke the "rivals" car and in the end the same guy crashed, he just had no emotions... No regrets, just nothing... And the stare when he was looking at his "rival" with critical condition while he was getting sent into the ambulance, i still have this cold stare on my mind, the same situation when in the end his coworker was shot because he was stupid enough to go near the car accident that there was a one of the guys with a gun that killed few other people in one of the houses before. In fact the main protagonist instead calling the ambulance, he was normally talking & smirking while the coworker was literally dying in front of him, it's **** crazy.
Ngl but i hate the ending, after all of this he's still free, he didn't go to jail or anything... But Jacob did an amazing performance as a heartless sociopath in this movie, like very amazing. My final rating is 7/10.
