This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was pretty... interesting?... in the middle of watching the movie I had a weird feeling watching it because of the main character, i can see that there's something wrong with him. His odd behaviour, smilling in the weirdest moments, and when he broke the "rivals" car and in the end the same guy crashed, he just had no emotions... No regrets, just nothing... And the stare when he was looking at his "rival" with critical condition while he was getting sent into the ambulance, i still have this cold stare on my mind, the same situation when in the end his coworker was shot because he was stupid enough to go near the car accident that there was a one of the guys with a gun that killed few other people in one of the houses before. In fact the main protagonist instead calling the ambulance, he was normally talking & smirking while the coworker was literally dying in front of him, it's **** crazy.
Ngl but i hate the ending, after all of this he's still free, he didn't go to jail or anything... But Jacob did an amazing performance as a heartless sociopath in this movie, like very amazing. My final rating is 7/10.

He's acting rationally, he's acting how the system demands him to act, he wants to get big, be the best version of himself after all. He's a prime caricature of today's self-help guides and influencers, that seek a negotiation and a business opportunity in every conversation. Lou is barely human anymore, he is just a tool. He's the product of capitalism thought to its very end, at least on an individual level.
Yet the movie itself kinda lost me in the end, everything is vague and the ending was bitter, but didn't have any subversion or punch to it.
Still a very watchable movie, I was at the edge of my seat and even found myself laughing at times.

This man is emotionally unshakable, relentlessly determined, yet witty and smart, weaving his way through many opposers that are attempting to bring his job down. He will lie, scheme, and dodge his way through the journey of his career in a seemingly deceptive matter in order to be self-sufficient and successful. Jake Gyllenhaal plays an outstanding performance as Lewis, and implants on the mind such an unforgettable face. I am genuinely satisfied with this thriller because of it's gritty concept and talented acting. Expand

The movie doesn't encite any reason why this guy is sociopathic. We're just expected to go along, but even in the most sociopathic characters, there's some humanity that made them that way. I think the filmmakers missed the truth of the movie and i wish went for something more daring. Instead they scapegoated and sold out for something safe. However, as long as one can over look the story's obvious absurdities it can be enjoyed as a compelling and superior thriller. Jake Gyllenhaal is superb as the sociopath who opportunistically decides to make a living by filming the misfortunes, injuries and death throes of others, which he then sells to TV. His total disdain for people and human life sets no bounds and this, in turn, leads him to TV news producer Renee Russo. She is fantastic as an ageing last chance producer who becomes entangled in his web. The scenes between them both literally crackle with there own kind of tension and are excellently written. The movie, mainly shot at night, makes excellent use of its L.A. locations, and a couple of set pieces (a home invasion and a restaurant shoot out) are outstanding and demonstrate first rate examples of how to create sustained tension. Flying under the radar, this is a film not to be missed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Jake Gyllenhaal acts his ass of in this. He plays a creepy sociopathic role so incredibly well that I would have felt weird being on set with him during the filming of this. Nightcrawler shows the progression of a weird and determined person into a conniving monster who uses his power to get exactly what he wants. This movie is tense and exciting, following Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed as they patrol the night streets looking for gruesome scenes to sell to the news. The slimey workings of the news, and the lack of boundaries for Jake Gyllenhaal make the two a perfect pair. Expand

Lou, a common thief bent on success, becomes obsessed with having the best camera shots of accidents and emergencies around the city to earn reputation and money. Lou does whatever it takes to make his way to the top including blackmailing news broadcasters and hiring the homeless. Gyllenhaal and Ahmed's performances are excellent and is a pleasure to watch as always. The music score is exceptional providing a threatening atmosphere, inviting dread into the scenes. The cinematography is stunning and reflects the Dan Gilroy's visionary screenplay. The unfortunate downside to this film however, is that the plot is to and extent predictable. Although you don't know exactly what Lou is going to do, the audience is given a rough idea of what Lou is always thinking and we are able to tell fairly quickly what Lou will do in order to achieve success. That being said, its still a very much enjoyable watch and makes you think about how corrupt the media industry can be. Expand

But it seems the last couple of years have really been his time to shine, with excellent performances in the awesome Prisoners, the bizarre Enemy, and now this exquisitely wrought thriller.

The film works brilliantly, not just because of its spot-on portrayal of the callousness and demented nature of American journalism, but because Dan Gilroy personifies it in the form of an actual sociopath. Gyllenhaal's haunting performance is so compelling that, in spite of his character's dreadful actions and creepy demeanour, one actually feels just a little bit pleased for him when he succeeds. In spite of the murders, accidents, attacks and other violent acts commited throughout the film, it was that little spark of sympathy for the main character that frightened me most.

Nightcrawler is a superb film that boasts a talented cast, wonderfully dark twists and electrifying tension.

Jake Gyllenhaal's has one of his finest performances as the unwavering, sociopathic Leo Bloom, who is determined to climb to success, willing to do anything, regardless of the ethical, moral, or legal questions they may bring up. Jake Gyllenhaal is an adapable character and in "Nightcrawler" his character looked creepy. After a while into the film I got used to the creepiness, but film angles gave reminders.

I like weird, quirky characters so I'd be happy watching him licking stamps for an hour, well probably a minute or so. The big plus with "NightCrawler" is even with all his creep, the character's story is actually possible. Driven, psychotic and a brutal realist, the character is a great role model for success in business. Your boss, my boss this film goes beneath the surface into the murky places of the psyche.

The other 10 reviews explain it well. I loved this film.

Louis Bloom (Gyllenhaal) is down on his luck, he drives an old car, lives in an disgusting apartment, and doesn't have a job. He drives around at night looking for ways to earn money, when he comes across a film crew taping a crime scene. It seems like easy money, so Bloom goes out, gets a camera, and starts filming the police himself, only, he doesn't follow the same rules that the others do. I will not dispute that Gyllenhaal was terrific, but his character was beyond annoying. Louis Bloom is this O.C.D. guy, who is constantly rambling and talking to himself, something that basically ruins the whole film. This guy gets so annoying it's to the point of frustrating. On top of that, it takes a long time for anything substantial to happen. I was really looking forward to seeing this film and was impressed by how far Jake Gyllenhaal has come, but despite it's looming cult classic label, I found this film to just be one frustrating scene after another. Critics are willing to give films like this four stars and tell you it's a must see, because of an Oscar worthy performance, but what's really the point of seeing something that most people aren't going to want to sit through? Similar to Citizen Kane, it's got a great reputation, but don't let that fool you, this is one of the most nerve racking films I've ever sat through and to be honest, I'm sorry I did. Expand

It was glitzy, polished, and the story was fleshed out quite well. There were a few slight discontinuities for me near the end, particularly a very forced and altogether useless romantic encounter that I feel the film could have done very much without. Altogether, though, a memorable satire of what it means to bring the news to life, and pull yourself up by the bootstraps. Expand

Creepy and unhinged, Gyllenhaal's performance in the lead was great, as you truly believe every word he says and all of his mannerisms and oddities. However, to me, one of the films best features was the cinematography, in particular the lighting. In line with other great films that capture Los Angeles at night such as Drive and Collateral, Nightcrawler is beautifully shot and lit. Another major plus for this one would have to be the way it operates as a biting criticism of the television news industry. Showing them as morally questionable and willing to do anything for ratings, this one certainly shows the shady side of television and raises many questions that should be answered, such as the morality of showing some of the footage shown. Overall, Nightcrawler is a thrilling, intense, and very creepy, experience that should help propel both Gilroy and Gyllenhaal to further success. Expand

A dark and nightmarish rags to riches story, set in the city of angels LA in a stylish neo-noir setting.

Jake Gyllenhaal's performance is very chilling and creepily psycho, as the penniless con-man who is determined to get popularity and money by joining the eyewitness video feed program ran by powerful News syndicates obsessed with catching live action crime in the city on video.

However his ambitious determination goes way out of his mental limits, that he is willing to break the law to get the video feed everyone will kill to acquire all for the sake of their own greed.

A grim yet spectacular modern achievement for small studio filming its one of the best films of 2014, and not to be missed!! period.

This movie has such an excellent character development, having as protagonist this weird, eccentric guy, that, being desperate for a job, muscles into the world of L.A. crime journalism. The film is fantastic, all the acting is very good, but the one from Gillenhaal is just beautiful. He really knows how to give life to his character, and how to make progress all the way through the film. The script is incredible, everything in the movie makes sense, and everything Gillenhaal says is extremely well thought, there isn't anything out of context and the story is very original. The ambient is very realistic, and you will not want to take your eyes out of the screen. The score, not being extremely good, gets its job done. The movie is excellent. I would really like a sequel. The film is pretty different to most of the films out there and Jake Gyllenhaal is fantastic in the role. He totally disappears in the character and gives one of his best performances to date, the best for many. He is definitely on a roll lately, after Prisoners, Enemy and a couple of upcoming very attractive films. He hadn´t enjoyed such acclaim since the Brokeback Mountain days. However, as good as this is, it lacks that push or x-factor that would make the film worth of an 8 or a 9. Hopefully we will get better and better bodies of work from this director. Expand

What a fantastic film, there were so many moments where I expected things to happen, only to be surprised that there were no clichés and many moments where you can predict what was going to happen; making the film even more exciting.

Jake Gyllenhaal absolutely smashed the part, he did so well playing as the main character as there were many moments where I genuinely felt creeped out, the film transitions really well from scene to scene, so that you're not bored, or confused at all.

The only flaw that I can think of with this film is that it wasn't long enough, there was never a moment where I was bored, or wanting it to end. I was just immersed. But really, it's all about quality over quantity so I can't really complain. I just really hope they make a sequel to this, I can't wait to see what happens next.

Scenarios are intense as we watch our lead Gyllenhaal run into dangerous situations that could land him in prison or in the grave. His motives aren't exactly disagreeable, but his methods are. The movie has a lot to say about modern journalism tactics.

The whole film succeeds thanks to how well the character Louis Bloom is written and how well he is portrayed by Gyllenhaal who gives another fantastic performance. He is a character who is equally creepy, brilliant, deranged, and likable. It's this combination that makes the character do things you won't agree with, but still keep you rooting for him at the same time.

I have to give special praise for how the film is shot. The gritty, almost grainy look of the world makes it look like one of those crime-thrillers from the 80's. For my fellow gamers out there I guess you could compare it's look to that of Hotline Miami. It gives the film a touch of a retro vibe.

"Nightcrawler" is dark, creepy, and at times vicious. It's a lot like it's protagonist in that respect. It's a wild and smart ride. One that you should take if you are in the mood for a thought-provoking piece of entertainment. It's unlike anything we've seen in a while.

While Gyllenhaal gives it his all in what some would consider the most compelling performance of his career, I never entirely bought into his character because he was essentially an amalgam of every other brooding, reclusive sociopath in cinema history, and he was all too familiar a character to even remotely pique my interest. Nightcrawler is a film that teeters uncomfortably between being realistic and illogical throughout, with vague social commentary jammed somewhere in between. It seemed like the score was absent for over half the movie's duration, but it flutters in occasionally (and awkwardly, I might add) to remind the audience of its existence. Director Dan Gilroy also demands that the audience revel in the inhumanity depicted on screen, and is so focused upon unsettling the audience, that any message he may be trying to convey is completely diluted by this forced grittiness. This film pales in comparison to Gone Girl in all respects. Expand

Lou is a systhematic and pragmatic guy who is determined to find a good job and with a simple camera and a lot of boldness he manages to catch Nina's attention and sold her his work. And knowing how much she depends on his images to keep her job, he'll become more and more demanding as the time goes by. He also won't think twice about doing evil things to gain more space on screen. Rene Russo does an amazing job as Nina, such as Riz Ahmed as Rick. Bill Paxton promissed something good at the beginning but he totally vanishes, never to be seen again. Another weak point in the script is the lack of background in the life of Lou. On the other hand, these things don't get in the way of this amazing first film of Dan Gilroy. Nightcrawler is crazy, scary and electricfying. Expand

Lou Bloom: "Steady hands, steady hands".

The story is about a young man, desperate for work, stumbles upon the seedy underworld of L.A.'s crime journalism. The break-neck pace is all about being the first on the scene - murder, accidents, fires, mayhem - and selling the gratuitous footage to the local news stations. But the better he gets, the more likely he is going to become the next story.

I heard so many great things about Nightcrawler. The critics said the same like, "It's a flawless peace of entertainment" or "One of the best movie of the year".- So I was looking forward to the movie by hearing all the good buzz from it, and after seeing it I can say that this movie is flawless.

Jake Gyllenhaal gives one of his best performance he ever did in his career. He lost a lot of weight for this role and I can say it pays off so well. I love how he makes his character so creepy, but so interesting to watch on screen. I swear to god if he doesn't get a Oscar nomination for his performance in this movie, I will be angry and disappointed at the Oscars, because when I watch a movie and don't see the actor, just the character that right they is talent.

The director of this movie (Dan Gilroy) and he was only a screenwriter for most of his career and this movie is his first time directing and my god his he brilliant. Dan Gilroy but a lot of effort in this movie and I heard that the director of the movie actually met some people who do these things that people call "Nightcrawling", and to me that shows that this guy should make more films in future, because he's the kind of director that movie need.

The writing in this movie is some of the best writing I've seen since Boyhood, I mean every sentence in this movie glues me in it's story and character's. The move itself has that dark, uneasy and hash look to it, but that's life. The shots were good, the other cast member's were great as well.

But as I said in my Interstellar and The Guest review, the movie isn't going to get the perfect rating of five out of five star's, but the movie is still brilliant.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays Bloom perfectly and provides one of 2014's most interesting characters. He will let nothing stand in his sociopathic way to become the best of what he does. He believes he can deceive and manipulate anything as long as he's good at it, and he strives to become best to have something of his own. His humanity is certainly questionable but it delivers the fact of what loneliness can do to people. He is alone (and perhaps wants to be) but whats recognition that only he himself can see he deserves. The film plays out brilliantly and is paced greatly until somewhere in the second half that i can't state exactly where, but once the "road accident" and "set up" takes place the film picks back up for a climactic, fast paced and faultless finale! One of 2014's best, grab it now! Expand

Landing the role of a "Nightcrawler" he is first to most criminal scenes as reported by police scanners.
Great photography, some of the camera shots during car chases were stunning, as was the driving. None of this **** where the other cars on the road all drive at 15mph while the main car dodges carefully in between. These shots were full on.
One of the very few films where I was left wanting more at the end.

The Director is so confident, and in creating such and chilling and immense atmosphere for Jake run around and do his thing, it just works, it's simple.
If you are the kind of film fan that loves depth and meaning in a film you should watch this one, I will not give anything away, but the themes in this film is why it's also great, and the way they treat it.

This is my favorite film of 2014, So I have to add Great job Dan Gilroy, and congratulations on your first film. Looking forward to the next one already.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nightcrawler is the compelling and disturbing story of a sociopath gradually getting better at manipulating those around him. Jake Gyllenhaal was incredible--I was shocked by how completely unattractive he made himself for this movie, adopting the role of the extremely creepy, sociopathic protagonist, constantly spouting off tired motivational business truisms in the most off-putting way imaginable (not to mention the way he abused and exploited his single employee and coerced Nina into having sex with him). Other user reviews have noted that you need to suspend a little disbelief for this movie, and I think that's true--in particular, the quick scenes where Gyllenhaal's character suddenly achieves success and all his equipment is enormously updated was too sudden to be financially credible, even accounting for the sparseness with which he lives his life otherwise.

I think what made this movie such a refreshing watch for me was the difficulty I had predicting what the final outcome was going to be, as well as what I wanted it to be. I spent a lot of the movie wondering how this was going to end, in that I could clearly envision an ending where something backfires, and he's killed or injured while trying to fix a shot. However, that end goes instead to Bill Paxton's character partway through the movie, while Gyllenhaal gets away with everything. In a weird way, I found this much more satisfying than for him to get his demise. Sometimes it's nice to see someone completely awful achieve success in what he sets out to do. It also allowed the movie to end on that darkly humourous note of, "I won't ask you to do anything I wouldn't do."

Supporting actors seem much more dull compared to Gyllenhall's acting but still give engaging characters. Once the plot picks up pace at the midway point it keeps you guessing with what twisted/Partly Insane act the main character will do next to further himself. The story gives a good look on the Job of recording Fires/Car Accidents or anything worth reporting on the news and how twisted the job could be at times.Gyllenhaal enraptures his character perfectly and delivers a stellar performance, If you in need of a great Drama/Thriller give "Nightcrawler" a chance..and no, not the X-Men Character Expand

I agree with the majority in thinking this movie was amazing looking, had great acting and defiantly set a tone; but in the end I really don't think a story was even told. At first it seems like the plot takes off very quickly but then it keeps that tone through the very end and it's like a story was never even told. I not sure how else to describe how this movie makes you feel, but in the end it's not good. I usually love these kinds of movies but for me this missed the mark by miles and left me questioning what I just watched. Expand
