Just a beautiful film. There's not a ton of action to it, but it's an elegantly told story, and the acting is pitch perfect. Kudos to the director and to all three actors playing Little/Black.

Extraordinary sensibility, maturity and editing, the picture goes through 3 different phases in the life of a young man going through a lot of things. After each one of those phases ends it leaves you wanting more, to know more about that child and getting more of that particular actor. The casting is also on point and every actor carries the story and the mannerisms of this kid so well. It´s one of those films that keeps growing on you more and more even after watching and stays days in your mind. Somehow it is not sad, it is quite pleasant and peaceful. It´s life. Probably the most unquestionable win for best picture at the Oscars in years since the film hasn´t got a single flaw. Total agreement with the critics average and that outstanding 99/100. A MUST see. A black and homossexual kid/teen/man is a theme with too much to explore in. And film makes it masterfully. There's moments that makes you cry, angry and thinkful. For a low budget movie, Moonlight is quite beautiful and competent. Tense scenes are really tenses and raw. Everything in a concise story that finises in less than 2 hours, opposite of Boyhood. A beautiful picture that is a punch in the face at the same time. A enriching experience. Expand

I felt so many raw emotions watching this as Chiron (the protagonist) takes each of his steps transitioning into adulthood, forming his identity with regards to race, masculinity, and sexuality. To see it all unfold the way it did made me feel lucky to be on the viewing seat instead of being in the type of environment Chiron was forced to live in. This film is definitely a heavy one, but despite its rawness I think I'm still going to see it again in theaters just to appreciate all of the poignancy and detail in it in how it addresses the tougher aspects with regard to masculinity, sexuality, race, etc. Overall, definitely a must-see. La banda sonora es bellísima, lo único que no me gustó fue que se deshicieran de Juan tan repentinamente, ya que así se tiró por el drenaje toda su breve aparición en la vida de Chiron. Expand

It is a brilliant character study and I have to say bravo to Barry Jenkins who made this movie. I believe that best aspect about this movie is that the movie does not show the character as a separate character that we watch but the movie made it into a movie where we experience together with Chiron. We don't always see Chiron to choose every movement but just watch him to experience the pain. The pain that suffers does not feel like a third person watching a person suffers but the audience suffers together. Every character is important in the movie and supports Chiron as who is right now. As we see the other performance including the incredible Mahershala Ali as Juan the father figure of Chiron. Some people are saying it is overrated but they are not understanding the human raw emotion that goes into those character. That is why I am giving a 10/10 because of it's raw emotions in the movie and the raw performance by the actors. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can only say this movie held me in it's grip and left me thinking about it weeks after seeing it. Not a single misstep or flaw and characters that turned stereotypes on their heads. The three acts of the man's difficult life, Little, Chiron, and Black, were stunningly portrayed by actors who made me care about this character in a way I have not felt for a long time. I was literally holding my breath at the end, and when I released it, I felt as if I was letting a real person go with the hope that there would be more kindness and love in store for a beautifully dimensional, wonderfully portrayed depiction of a young man coming to realize that he was not only lovable but worthy of love. This is a close-up portrait of a single character portrayed by three actors, who manage to convey one of the most realistic and uniform character arcs portrayed by different actors over different ages. It's closest contemporary is Boyhood, which required its lead actor to play the part over 12 years to achieve the same effect.

The supporting parts are all elegantly written around the central character of Little/Chiron/Black, and fill up most of the dialogue. Chiron himself is a man of few words and the performances are more mesmerizing as a result.

As a complete piece of art, this film is a rare example of no weak links. There are no objective flaws to reduce the 10/10 score. People who do not like this film were not the target audience because the truth is not every film is for everyone. But the particular story of a gay black man in the south, told as an intimate character study, has now been told, and it has been told perfectly.

It is hard to describe the plot in a sentence or two, but I can tell you the movie is told in three different parts, one as a kid, teen and a grown man. The boy's name is Chiron, and his mother(like many at the time) was a crack-addict and would never give Chiron the love he needed. Chiron, as a young boy, met a friendly drug dealer and his girlfriend, who are the only ones sharing affection with him. The dealer, Juan, and his girlfriend take care of him by feeding him, and letting him spend the night on occasions. As he grows up, Chiron gets bullied even more, and it almost seems as everything gets worse. Having trouble with his identity, he meets a troublemaker named Kevin who actually has feelings for him, and they experience sexuality. But of course, there are always more conflicts for him to experience. When a grown man, he becomes someone else, not who the real, "little" Chiron is. "Moonlight" is a hard movie to watch at many parts, including the second act. It is also hard to relate to these characters, bullied, black, gay and surrounded by drugs. The real reason why this movie is so emotional, so captivating is because of the incredible performances by ALL, and the extraordinary directing from Barry Jenkins. I left this movie crying, because at the end it's almost like a fill in the blank, you have to understand from what Chiron has gone through, and how he turns out. Many people dislike this movie, to be mean towards black people, and I assure you, if no one told me or you this had an all-black cast, you wouldn't notice. Expand

The film doesn't just show all this but make you feel it in a very special way.
What makes this movie special is how it so touching without much happening and how it tells so much without showing a lot.
The visuals (especially the light) are as great as the actors and the story. For me there couldn't be an more deserving oscar winner.

But this movie isn't for everyone. If you want a movie which surprises you with it's many plot twists, which shocks you or anything with a high tension, this movie isn't for you.
The plot is predictable, the tempo is slow but the film gives you something different sympathy and empathy for this black homosexual man growing up. If you don't care about people this movie isn't for you

Poignant is, main character, Chiron’s alienation from his peers and through the world of a child, you have to work out why he is different.

Meanwhile the score excellently captures the many different moods of his internal journey, fear, love, torment, betrayal and reconciliation.

Chiron is perceived as a victim and bullied until one striking incident. His life is shown at 3 different stages in 3 acts and each offer the viewer something different.

A lot of thought is put behind the story and you can see the intelligence in the smaller details. It took me a second watch to fully enjoy and appreciate the depth behind this masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Moonlight takes the spot for my second favorite movie of all time. The concept/theme is interesting but the way it’s executed is out of this world and makes that concept/theme so much deeper and more engaging. The writing, directing and acting are all great and this is a movie that proves that you don’t need to have a total A-list cast to make a fantastic and Academy award winning movie; the only actor in this movie who I knew before seeing it was Mahershala Ali, who gave a phenomenal performance and deserved the Academy award that he won for his work in the movie. Chiron is a unique and complex character and it’s really engaging to watch how his personality affects him and his relationships with those he cares about as he grows up. The structure of this movie is also really cool, as it’s divided into 3 sections that each detail a part of Chiron’s life and how he changes as he goes from a boy to a teenager to an adult while still remaining the same in many ways. This is a film that showcases that no matter how old you get or how much mental development you go through, you’ll still be the same person in a lot of ways. The way that the movie flows and transitions through these 3 sections is great and doesn’t feel disruptive to it at all or cause any awkward or abrupt moments. Another thing that makes this movie more unique and complex than it may appear at first glance is how the movie is described in a google search. You’ll see it as “Gay & lesbian/Drama” or “Drama/LGBT” and a synopsis will talk about falling in love. I definitely agree with the drama, and it’s undeniable that Chiron is a gay character, but this movie isn’t about romance or LGBTQ related themes. It certainly includes them and makes sure we know about them, but Moonlight is really a coming of age story that’s rare and underrepresented in cinema and that’s part of what makes this movie as good as it is. I’m sure that there are people in the real world who have stories similar to that of Chiron and yet we never hear about any of them. Moonlight is a film about stories we don’t normally hear or care about. The struggle that Chiron goes through is a product of his upbringing and the environment that surrounds him throughout his life, and it’s a struggle that I’m sure so many other people will be able to relate to. This movie speaks to and for all of those people, and in that way it’s a fascinating work of art. Via all of this, Moonlight is incredibly realistic and accurate of real world situations, something I always appreciate in a film. This movie is a must-see for people who appreciate the genres that form it’s story and plot and well deserves the Academy award for Best Picture that it won. Expand

An expression of a feeling, a mood, a time and place that together form empathy, understanding, and art. It's a film of moments, moments weighted with the unseen and the deeply felt with the help of three different superb actors at different times, having to convey all that's changed and unchanged without any exposition.

The soundtrack is gorgeous, capturing the sublime and the superficial, the life and the atmosphere of the piece.

I want to nitpick the ending but it's not yet time for that. Maybe I just wanted more, but that doesn't necessarily mean the film is at fault. I would simply ask, "What's the message here, if any? It gets better...eventually and kinda randomly?"

Many times the film isn't too dialogue-heavy, but that isn't a problem as the characters in the film often times say so much without saying anything at all. The emount of emotional communication in the film is huge and really speaks volumes and went a long way for me. The actors brought each of their characters to life so well that they felt so real and I forgot that they were acting the whole time while watching the film. Needless to say that this is easily the best character study of the year as well. Director Barry Jenkins really knew what he was doing with this film. Huge props to him for handling the film and its characters and subject matter with so much maturity and love. The only bad thing I can say about this movie is that the medium it uses to tell the stories it tells and touch on the themes it touches limit it from going too deep into any one of the stories or themes. Extrapolated further, individually, analysing any one of them (being black in America, school to prison pipeline, childhood psychology, drug culture, American "low income" culture, other pathologies, sexuality, belongingness in community, being true to one's self, and more)... seeing this movie as a balcony on which many of these themes and stories are perched upon give you insight on a lot here... This movie is very dense (in a good way), it made me uncomfortable, sad, happy, pensive and more. Expand

People told me this was amazing. Actually a lot of people. But wow, nobody warned me this was going to be emotionally striking. Praising this movie for being powerful is just an understatement.

Moonlight is one of best character study movies I've seen this year. The directing, the writing, score, and especially the acting is what this movie so freaking brilliant.

Director Barry Jenkins shot this movie in a very different and unique way. And I say "unique" as how this movie was filmed in a shallow depth that made the whole thing pretty intriguing. I wouldn't say he's directing is complete perfectionist, as there's plenty of room for improvement. Even if you don't like the choices he picked for a scene, but keep in mind that this doesn't equal bad directing. Lets not go that far. You can see that there's talent and he got a lot out of fantastic performances from all the actors.

Alex R. Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, and Trevante Rhodes all did a phenomenal job playing Chiron (the main character). Each of the actors builds on their character that the previous actor did. Despite the changes and the transformation, not once did you see a different person. There was never a moment where I didn't believe in a actor was giving a 100% their all or wasn't invested in the role. In my "A Monster Calls" review I said how great child actors are very rare in big budget movies, but not in indie. Several kid and teenage actors were all pretty fantastic in this, which is quite the accomplishment.

Naomie Harris and Mahershala Ali were both outstanding in this movie. It's one of performances I've seen from them. Even through their screen time is shot as Hopkins was in "Silence of the Limbs". And that's kinda impressive. Both manages to give anything in a small matter of time. It's really mind blowing and a real challenge.

But what really surprised me the most was Nicolas Battelle beautiful violin score. Why this took me by surprise is because who's expecting a score like that from a movie that takes place in a gangster ghetto setting. This movie is more of a personal film of are main characters experience than anything else. So music like this fits perfectly and I'm glad it didn't go for a terrible R&B song for once.

The writing is just top-notch and if you're an inspired writer, you should take notes from this. This is how you write great characters. Nothing cartoonist or anything that's one-dimensional. All the character's feel fleshed out and so natural to the point I forgot it was acting. And the best thing I can say about the film is that isn't predicable. I honestly didn't know where the story was going.

When I called this a "character study film", that's because of the arks the main character goes through that leads to the next scene. It starts off with Chiron as a shy child living in a crime ridden neighborhood in Miami with his crack addict mother. This leads to him meeting Juan (Mahershala Ali), which leads to him taking a lot from him (appearance wise) when an adult. Him being bulled at school leads to him being buffed, strong, and confident so none can pick on him ever again. But at the same time, he's hiding himself even more by being something that he's not. He acts gangster and talks in a American slang that I bet he doesn't fully understand. You can say different arguments to this, but how I see it, he's just getting better at hiding of who he really is. It's are journey through life that defines us as human beings. Same goes to the rest of the characters. I don't know about you, but that's pretty upsetting.

You know, for awhile I was pretty close of giving "Moonlight" the perfect rating that I never thought would happen. But what stopped me is the little flaws. Some of the editing choices didn't really hit at times and lucky it didn't happen too often. I also notice some sound errors in a few parts, but it's only tiny.

Overall rating: "Moonlight" is an original film that stays away from following a predicable path. I thought this was absolutely mesmerizing and was quite the experience that I didn't expect.

At Its Core, An Insubordinate Drama Where Transcends Racial Hate & Homophobia

One of the most eloquent contenders for the Academy Awards is Barry Jenkins' neo-creation, if we interpret it in a superficial way, illustrates three formative periods in correlative gradation of a gay black male, however, scrutinizing it from the inside out, we notice a limpid treatment about a little-known environment by huge studios, one where poverty, loneliness, orphanhood, violence, drug abuse, and intolerance ravage to any boy residing by such degrading places. Not necessarily you must be African-American or gay to converge your own existential opinions with Chiron's, this is because it's defined as a universal tale both in effect and purpose; an important epic supported by the reality.

It begins with a circular tracking shot to place the audience into the perverse place where the main character will have to grow up, an atmosphere which breaths dioxide formed by the miasma of bullets, prostitution, vices, scams, sex, narcotics and death. The films encompassing African-American marginalized populations tends to implement certain hallmarks produced by social disruption, which is caused by deficiencies (social exclusion, police brutality or educational neglect) leading an unsuspected doctrinal starting point. Jenkins, who's devoted to these "stereotypes" of films about black race, delineates naturally a Miami punished by the sun, space where Chiron's hilarities, notions, dreams, disappointments, learnings, decisions, and fluids that go from scarlet blood or saline sobs to the experimental sperm were fixed to torrid precarious ground of American ghettos, experiences richly raised through three temporary gradations (childhood, youth and adulthood) marked by three irrefutable denotations of the character in question (Little, Chiron, and Black).

"You can be gay, but you don't have to let nobody call you a ****

Narratively, it can be compared with dense, epic and fatiguing Richard Linklater's "Boyhood", "Moonlight" employs narrative in sections as standalone episodes comprising altogether an intense realism, an initiative bracing the trip and psychic and emotional spurs of the characters. The whole product is much more than the sum of its parts. It expels conviction, transformation and freedom of all kinds; It's something that concerns you and gets under your skin beyond the closing credits. Fractional exposition allows more intimate contact with what happens to Little, young or mature man; each chapter works as an independent installment, splendidly played by an ardent diverse cast, photography as real as visceral, a soundtrack combines emotional position of a given moment and a series of components employs simplicity and truthfulness as info carrier. It entails entirely the kind of film which is imperative for us more than ever, one that talks about what can happen a common human being and grows apart itself from the oneiric. It's patent the limited trust around nobility of our existence to conceive art, we make other worlds rather than appealing infinity of opportunities are around us. The visuals are marvelous, repel the tendency of those recurring feature films using desaturation and dreadmist to portray real-life occurrences. Here, fluorescent bright colors come together dark contrast in order to animate and give a distinct personality to each planned segment, mise-en-scène intensifies its fantastic beauty with precise camera movements at the hands of skilled James Laxton. Music, light and camera aesthetically shape the movie, equipping with sensitivity and depth Chiron's life, while simultaneously, it reduces the inherent hostility of the American atmosphere. Visual and writing screenplay combined with tremendous credibility, while John (one of the most humane performances of a drug dealer in the cinema history by California native Mahershala Ali) recites to Chiron the origin of his nickname (Blue), the story applies optionally sparkling moonlight involvement in the last scene, in which he invites us to do the same he did, to try to define us, not to fear, to be who want to be, to develop a global principle entrusted to humanity; living in freedom.

Barry Jenkins' "Moonlight" officially starts the participation of two of the social groups more unjustly repudiated by contemporary society: black race and homosexuals. Each person can draw deductions, opinions and criticisms, but the truth is that what these men and women—dedicated to cause a change—have made is a fearless and decisive social and filmic feat, which's realized by universal subjects such as youth, rashness, self-improvement, love, masculinity, and life. "Moonlight" is a grade-A drama, literally powerful, visually linked to the truth; its power doesn't come from complex intelligible narrative tricks, the charm lies in connection with the characters and the unintentional identification with coexistence human nature: acceptance (tolerance).

What is mesmerizing is seeing three different actors playing the same character at three different ages and fully believing that it is the same person though the character changes so greatly. We see the root of certain characteristics in the boy that eventually blossoms in the adult version of the man. It's a testament to Barry Jenkins' attention to detail and his ability to work with actors and elicit honest and moving portrayals. A quietly moving and occasionally stark film that packs powerhouse moments and an aching beauty that courses through every frame. I highly recommend this one and for fans of Wong Kar Wai, there are a few stylistic and visual homages to the great Hong Kong director. Expand

It’s hard enough living through one of the two, which is why it takes a seriously committed director like Barry Jenkins to accept the challenge. He doesn’t have that much experience directing feature-length films, but in Moonlight, you would think he’s been a master of his craft for decades. His latest feature has been picking up tremendous well-deserved Oscar buzz due to its subtle shock value that grips you throughout all the important milestones of a boy’s growth into a man within an all-Black community.

The boy’s name is Chiron, and Jenkins introduces us to him while he is on the run from other boys at school who throw garbage at him. His tears of fright call the attention of a humble, hospitable member of the community, played with a cool soothing voice by Mahershala Ali. In this stage of his youth, Chiron’s words are far and few in between, leaving room for what he doesn’t say, rather than what he does say, to craft his complex character. At this point he’s given the name “Little” by the friendly older man, who plans to help him get home, against the boy’s wishes, and for good reason. His mother is the living embodiment of the environment he must grow up in: trashed, rejected, dependent on drugs to sustain mental stability, in other words, the usual Black mother figure of Hollywood cinema. It’s not the best portrayal of Black women, but Naomie Harris’ (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Skyfall) performance as this mother figure is the most disturbing and terrifying onscreen depiction since Heath Ledger’s Joker.

This man quickly becomes the father figure “Little” never knew he wanted, as depicted by a nostalgic swimming lesson on the seashore. He may have the role model his mother failed to be, but it turns out that’s not what his biggest problem is. Rather, his sadness comes from daily getting called a **** so frequently in fact, that he wonders if it’s true. Under any other directors’ hands, this scene could easily go dreadfully wrong, but Jenkins knew how to pace it in a fashion that commands tears to be shed as Chiron opens up about his sexuality.

Then we are shown his teenage years, where he is given the nickname “Black” by his best friend Kevin. He almost always keeps to himself as his social capacity is limiting; his mother’s desperate harassment towards him for drug money not helping in the process. Just like anybody in their teenage years, here is where screenwriter (also Barry Jenkins) cranks up his storytelling vigor, throwing in detail after detail of Chiron’s most important memories to keep even the most distanced of minds intrigued.

The visual flavor is not like other motion pictures you have seen. Everything about the camerawork is flawed: the image jerks all over, the image spins in and out of focus, the white balance is off, but you know what? It works. If done unintentionally, this would appear to be the work of any amateur who’s never touched a camera before. But director of photography James Laxton orchestrates these imperfections to match the disorder of Chiron’s desire for self-discovery. Nicholas Brittel’s (The Big Short) soundtrack matches the troubling look of the picture to help you hate the people that Chiron would want dead.

While it may be an immediate shut-off for many to see the very open life of a homosexual, especially in a film that features only one White actor (playing a police officer), this is one of the most intriguing looks into Blackness of the past decade. It’s not every day you look into a world where all Blacks casually call each other a **** as if it’s common slang. So if the subject matter does not offend you, and you want to feel better about the place of Blackness in our world, then Jenkins’ character study is made especially for you.

When people ask me “What was the best film of the year?” I say Moonlight. This is a dark, gritty story that felt like it wasn’t being told because anyone decided to tell it, but more like fate had been leading Barry Jenkins and company towards this their whole lives. The obvious comparison would be Boyhood, and it feels that grand in scope, but more timely. If you had told me that they filmed all of the iterations of the main character, Chiron, over a twenty year span with the same actor, I would have believed you. However, if there is one thing I will remember from Moonlight down the line (because it is a little heavy for a regular spot in the rotation), it will be Mahershala Ali. I loved Dev Patel’s performance in Lion, and in many ways it was more athletic, but I would have turned off the Academy Awards after the first card had Ali not won. The scene at the dinner table could have been his only scene in the movie, and he would have earned that Oscar. That is all. 9.2/10 Expand

In the film we can see that the poor black kid must burden a lot of hardships to live. In another part of the story we have a mother that she does not pay attention to his child. she drowns to her bad works. When we see Naomi's role in the film, maybe we can conclude that she represents so many mother's lives in some societies. the biggest theme of the story is forgiveness. although the child didn't have a good mother but he accept his mother's apologize. this theme reminds us that the great love between mother and her son never destroys.so many believe that this is a kind of celestial love that God has given to his humans. The story is told from Chiron’s childhood, to his teenage years and then into adulthood. The cinematography, while personally not for me, was still creative and fit well with the film. It also contains some great performances, Mahershala Ali really shows his range in this film, and Alex R. Hibbert is one of the best child actors I’ve seen recently. The writing is also good, and the plot flows nicely into an ambiguous ending, which leaves you to reflect upon the rest of the movie. Expand

The film tackles issues people may not have even crossed that average viewer's mind and does it brilliantly. It does not over dramatize, or over romanticize any moment. Everything is exactly how it should be. It provides insight into all types of challenges mixed into one perspective. Camera work also makes the movie feel first person. Scenes where the camera is half submerged into the ocean invokes nostalgia of when you were young and could barely keep your head above water. Everytime the film leaps in time to a different point in Chiron’s life, the viewer has a lot of catching up to do. Chiron changes on the surface in a substantial manner. However, eventually, you realize that each and every Chiron is the same on the inside. The message of self identity in this film is hammered home. I go back to my point of the film being a realistic painting. Many directors aim for twists on their films to make it feel authentic to themselves, similar to how Picasso may skew his paintings to make it identifiable as “a Picasso” . Barry Jenkins' approach was to make this film authentic to the viewer. He focused on the truth of the matter at hand. He found success in making the matter relatable to viewers who may have never thought to relate to Chiron. Expand

It tells the story of an African American boy highlighting three distinct chapters in his life as he navigates his way on the road from pre-teen to manhood experiencing all of life’s obstacles and difficulties one might expect there to be growing up in a lower class South Florida neighborhood. The film stars Alex R. Hibbert, Andre Holland ("Selma" "The Knick) and Ashton Sanders and a cast of supporting actors that do their best to try to make the film equal to the rave reviews it has received. Unfortunately, for this reviewer at least, the film, as good as it is, is not the great American film entry of 2016 as so many more noted critics have labelled it. I found that the film was too long and draggy and the scenes and chapters did not flow or segue from one to the other in an easy manner. Casting also became an issue but one would have to actually see the film to understand this comment. Make no mistake, this is a powerful and important film showing the plight that so many lower class youths experience and how their intra-cultural encounters so often shape their low expectancy lives. Mr. Jenkins, as writer and director, has I fear bitten off a bit more than he can chew. However, with all that being said, he has given us an interesting and thought provoking product. I give the film an 8 rating although I must admit that I had difficulty believing that the film I saw on the screen was the same one about which the critics unamimously praised. Expand

As Chiron interacts with his mom, a couple of strangers that welcomes him and his school friend, the viewer discover the theme of the film, the search for identity as a whole, understanding of one’s emotions, clearing the brainstorm of thoughts in order to comprehend who you really are. The thing is that all these are endangered by a sexual identity that it’s still developing, so the outcome is very unique and beautiful on its way. The direction is precise, the screenplay cunningly fragmented, accurate score, the three actors that created the protagonist nailed it, but all the credits are for Naomie Harris and Mahershala Ali, both gave sublime performances. And the movie title just perfect: running alone at night in the moonlight, symbolizing the solitude of growing up in the streets. Expand

Both show a main character grow up and undergo otherwise mundane experiences, but those experiences are things that leave an indelible mark on him for the rest of his life. Moonlight, however, is different in scope. It is a journey of self-discovery undertaken by a man who is decidedly "other". He is black and living in the inner city with a drug addict mother and a drug dealing man who looks after him a bit. He is - as he will discover - gay. This is tough as a whole, but especially in the hypermasculine environment in which he lives. For Chiron, life is a minefield and one he must navigate or simply be consumed by it, all while figuring out who he is and what he wants.

Barry Jenkins' film gracefully slides through Miami with Chiron and his life, while properly giving weight to each significant moment in his life. Jenkins let's the camera linger, while Chiron - never much of a talker - rarely ever says anything. This allows the moment to really land on the audience, which makes Moonlight a film that is entirely heartbreaking. From a bullied youngster who first experiences being called a **** to a teen who has his first gay experience while finally fighting back against the bullies to an adult who has become everything he once stood against, Moonlight is an enriching and tragic film.

However, Moonlight is equally a look at the black experience in America, particularly in the inner city. Chiron's father is gone. His mother, Paula (Naomie Harris), is a drug addict. The only people who show him any love are Juan (Mahershala Ali) and his girlfriend Teresa (Janelle Monae). However, Juan is a drug dealer and sells to Chiron's mother. Clearly, his life is far from neat. When introducing his sexuality, his relationship with Kevin is all the more complicated by both's need to display masculinity on the outside, which leads to them physically hurting one another often. There is a connection between them - highlighted by the brilliant acting of both's final version, Trevante Rhodes as Chiron and Andre Holland as Kevin - but it is not one that can be explored due to the barriers between them. The look Kevin gives Chiron reveals all you need to know about how they feel about one another. Yet, it is hardly an option for either due to the need to look tough.

In all areas, Jenkins' script is phenomenal. Truly nuanced character development, which allows all characters to show growth and a variety of dimensions and faces they show to the world. However, one of the greatest accomplishments is Juan. Mahershala Ali is being mentioned for an Oscar nomination and he certainly deserves one, but the writing is equally good. A sensitive, yet hard nosed drug dealer, Juan helps out Chiron whenever his mom kicks him out. He defends him and opens his home to him, while acting as a father figure for this lost child. Yet, he is a drug dealer. In reality, Juan is a foreshadowing of what Chiron will become. This is incredibly tragic and certainly something Chiron is aware of by the end. He knows his life is not built to last due to dealing drugs, but he is there because he never knew who he was and could never figure it out, because of his own thoughts on how a black man from the inner city should act. Juan reveals a lot of this, merely through his interactions with a young Chiron, especially his solemn regret when Chiron calls him out for selling drugs to Chiron's mother. The similarities between the two (the doo-rag, the poor relationship with their mother, drug dealing, etc.) are numerous and often quite subtle. However, it reveals their connection and why they were drawn to one another.

Moonlight is also beautifully shot, essentially relying upon the light of the moon to give sequences at night this sort of magical glow. Each scene at night is obviously quite dark, but the faces of the actors are glistened with this sort of hazy glow that really defines the look of this film. And what a look it is. Moonlight is a beautifully shot film with tremendous lighting and this beauty equally matches the beauty of its journey.

A tale of self-discovery and losing yourself to your environment, Moonlight is a moving and tragic film that will stick in your mind for weeks to come. All of the acting is tremendous and to pick a standout performance would be far too difficult. Every actor brought an authentic quality to their role, which is fantastic to see given the tremendously written characters.

Took me a while to see 'Moonlight', with the controversy it garnered when it was announced for the Best Picture Oscar and the amount of hate it's got here part of me was wary.

Finally getting round to seeing 'Moonlight', it turned out that it was more than well worth the while and that the wariness was not needed. 'Moonlight' is not a perfect film and may not have been my personal pick for the Best Picture award (for me that was 'La La Land' though that is not a popular opinion it seems). Truly admired what it set out to do and found it a brave and powerful film, despite what the detractors say there is far more to 'Moonlight's' appeal than politics, sexuality and race (clearly trying to find conspiracy theories and reasons for why a film they dislike is loved by others, without taking into account that the film simply just connected to and resonated with those who liked it).

'Moonlight' does end on an anti-climactic note, some of the last act is a bit rushed. A longer length would have helped as a result, it also would have helped make a couple of events in the first act a little clearer and not so choppy.

It may not say much new, despite the ground-breaking concept on paper with the exploration of lives rarely seen on film, and doesn't always have subtlety. Then again it is tackling far from subtle themes and a heavy subject, so that sort of was going to be inevitable.

However, 'Moonlight' is an exceptionally well made film. The cinematography and editing are some of the most eye-pleasing and best of that year, and can't find anything to fault the expertly handled direction. The music is cleverly mixed and has haunting power and fluidity.

Regarding the writing, it is not perfect, at times as said a little heavy-handed and vague in parts, but it is thought-provoking and handles very ambitious, relevant, important themes with power, truth and (mostly) delicacy. The story makes the most of the three act structure, it's handled simply but not simplistically and also handled cleverly and with passion, honesty and intelligence. Found myself relating quite a lot to and being moved significantly by the story and found the film handled a heavy and sensitive subject matter with a lot of relevance and importance today more than admirably.

Can't fault the acting, doing wonders with compellingly real characters and strongly defined character relationships (especially the central one). Much has been made of Maharshala Ali and Naomie Harris and deservedly with two of the best performances that year, Ali especially is extraordinary. It is easy though to overlook Alex R. Hibbert, Trevante Rhodes and Ashton Sanders and one shouldn't, as they are just as worthy (particularly Sanders).

Overall, didn't completely blow me away but very well done and with a lot to admire. 8/10 Bethany Cox
