A flick that tells the origins of Mike and Sully's scare experience and their "first encounter" which was not here, but actually in elementary school, according to the trailer during the previews in the VHS of Toy Story 2.

This time around sulley & mike aren't as interesting. I can respect the attempt even with all of its awkward dates comedy and loose plot but I won't say I enjoyed it. After the success of the first film (although it was a success heavily amputated by competing films), it was predictable that Pixar would bet, sooner or later, on a film that continued with the same revenue as the first. The follow-up, however, had to wait more than ten years in the drawer, and ended up not being a sequel, but rather a prequel that shows us how the main characters met and their journey.

The script is not original, and the story is very similar to a thousand other films in an American high school or university environment, but the fact is that it works well. It begins with Mike and Sullivan's arrival at Monsters University, where they must attend a degree in Scare, the most prestigious degree the university has to offer. However, the highly respected college headmistress is extremely demanding and will not like them at all, taking advantage of an unfortunate incident they cause to expel them, based on Mike's inability to instill fear and Sullivan's total neglect of studies. However, Mike is determined to graduate and prove his worth, and will take advantage of a college scare competition to challenge the headmistress.

The film proved to be a very honorable continuation of the first film: the prequel works well and the characters we liked in the first film are almost all present (of course the human girl is not). Thanks to a very well written script, we see how they get to know each other, and how their friendships and enmities are forged. There are many intentional similarities between the University of Monsters and Harvard University, and the US academic environment is well reproduced here (being totally different from the Portuguese or European university environment). The digital animation is exquisite, the drawings were very well executed, there is excellent color and brightness throughout the film and the soundtrack seems to me to have been better and better chosen this time around. For the voices of the characters, the film once again summons John Goodman, Billy Crystal and Steve Buscemi, to which well-known actors such as Helen Mirren, Alfred Molina or Joel Murray will be joined.… Expand

Si lascia guardare, diverte in diversi tratti, ma non lascia chissà quale forte impressione. Neanche il terzo atto riesce a sollevare il film dall'essere mediocre (considerando gli standard dello studio). Poi qualche cliché qui e làOk.

I've got very mixed feelings about this movie. Proposing a sequel to the unavoidable and iconic 'Mosters, Inc.' required bravery and an unwavering dedication. Can't say I'm truly disappointed by the result. However it is far from beingI've got very mixed feelings about this movie. Proposing a sequel to the unavoidable and iconic 'Mosters, Inc.' required bravery and an unwavering dedication. Can't say I'm truly disappointed by the result. However it is far from being excellent.

There are many assets: the animation is gorgeous, colours are appealing, characters are lovable (for the majority of them), the story is full of twists and turns, there are funny easter eggs making significative bonds between prequel and this movie, we learn a bit more about Mike, Sulley, Randy and the universe they all live in. Some jokes manage to be funny when not too childish.

But there is a major 'but' ! Story fails to evoke any precise and powerful emotion, it feels like nothing really matters. Characters evolve in a very predictable and linear way all along the movie. Many characters are just shadows of themselves: funny ones make giggle, bad ones cause bad events, and main characters don't do much to deepen the plot. The pace is really jerky and events lose a lot of value just to allow one cheesy joke and a dumb wink as easter egg. We can honestly feel the desperate efforts to make today's children embark in an adventure started years and years ago. As an adult who watched 'Monsters, Inc.' with great pleasur during his childhood, I can't help but recommend to stay away from this below average pre-heated childish movie.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I never got to know this movie existed. I used to live under a rock back when it released. So the moment I learnt that Monsters Inc has a prequel, I immediately watched it with my sister. We didn't know what we were going to witness other than the fact that the title itself says it's from the time Mike and Sully were in college. And it really stood on our expectations. It's funny, adventurous and has the character development that we want to see in a Pixar movie prequel.

This time around Mike is the protagonist. His life is shown from the school days to studying in college and then finally getting a job at Monsters Inc. Seeing him really reminded me of my own days of school, which is the reason why I liked his character so much over here. Sully is like one of those normie guys whom I'd always choose to stay away from in my school/college days. I absolutely hate people like him. And that's what made me side by Mike even more.

But eventually as Mike and Sully became friends and took part in the competition, I began liking Sully slowly. He's the kind of a character who may act like a douche, but is not completely bad. He does not behave that way because he himself wants to. He's just doing it because he thinks this is what will make him popular. Coming from a big family he never understood the way normal people behave. And once he became friends with Mike, he slowly began to change. Although he still didn't trust Mike, because of which he cheated to make Mike win by adjusting the dial of the scared child.

The ending was actually pretty unexpected. I was thinking they will graduate from college and then become employees at Monsters Inc. After all, the college name sounded just like the company. But the ending seemed completely random and hilarious. They slowly rose up to the ranks, answering the question within the last 30 seconds. I watched this movie about 3 years ago and I have very little memory of it. So I can't exactly remember every single detail that happened in it. I can definitely say that this was a very fun movie, although not exactly memorable.

I'd say Monsters University is a good movie, just like all the other Pixar sequels, if you're a fan of the previous movies and want to watch something fun for the whole family. It's quite surprising no one takes its name when talking about Pixar sequels. They only say Cars 2, Finding Dory, Incredibles 2 etc. I wouldn't have even known about it if I didn't open the Pixar Wikipedia page and scrolled through all the names of the movies that I wanted to bingewatch. This movie is definitely something I'd watch again if I get the chance.… Expand

Monsters University is a prequel for Monsters s.r.o. and is, in my opinion, even better. The animation has improved. Now not only Sully, but everyone looks really good and the story is even better than in the previous film. Cars 2 and Brave back to back was a pain, but now PIXAR has returned to something familiar and fun. Some people do not like this movie, but I am not one of those people. This movie is super fun, super enjoyable, and a breath of fresh air coming right after two of some of the worst movies in PIXAR's catalog. Monsters University is a prequel to Monsters, Inc., and this time stars Mike Wazowski. Cars 2 did something similar in trying to make the secondary character the main character in their sequel and it backfired horribly. Luckily for this film, it works very well as Mike Wazowski voiced by Billy Crystal is excellent and very charming, and gives a lot more depth to his character we didn't see in the original. The whole movie is enjoyable, but the only part that comes close to the quality of the first Monsters movie is the last third of the movie, which comes in suddenly when we think the movie is wrapping up. This last third is really good and I wish the rest of this movie was like it. As time went on, I started to enjoy this movie a lot more, and my family and I watch it often. I would say this is the PIXAR film (post-Toy Story 3) that we watch the most.… Expand

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY is a prequel to MONSTERS INC., directed by Dan Scanlon. The characters include the voices of Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Hellen Mirren.

The film goes back to where Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan were before they were buddies and in Monsters Inc. It shows how the two of them were in university, showing the relationship between them which led up to the two of them becoming the best of friends.

Alright, so MIKE AND SULLY ARE BAACKK!!! Well, thats what every kid or adult that was associated with the enjoyment of Monsters Inc should say. Okay, so it's been 12 years since we saw these two on-screen, providing us with animated humor, and now they're back again, to show us how they were in University. The teaser trailer was extremely funny as it showed a prank played on Mike by Sully, and it gave a short look-in into the sort of relationship we would be seeing. Soon enough, the trailer came out and boy did it get people hooked. Finally, I was able to catch a premiere screening of the film, to my advantage, and IT WAS GREAT.

So let's start talking about the film, not necessarily the trailers. Who are we kidding, at first when we heard that Monsters University was coming, that a sequel was coming to the classic Monsters Inc, we gave up hope, saying that no one could make it better than the first one. But Dan Scanlon challenged that, and the first teaser proved it. And I think that the movie does it as well- kinda. So, Monsters University isn't AS good as Monsters Inc, but it does come second in line. It includes Mike and Sully in an underdog team, but throughout the film, you can't help and laugh out at the jokes, and smile at the fact that the sequel is finally out.

Monsters University is GREAT. It has two parts and its all happy and fun. I, honestly, liked the way they showed the chemistry developing between Mike and Sully. You can actually feel it, and even though its animation, it feels real. This one isn't quite sad, like how Inc was. Inc ended in a sad tune, at the fact that Boo was gone, but this one ends at the beginning of Inc. I loved the way it ended. The line that Mike uses just makes you go like, 'YEAH! Thats what I'm talking about!' Honestly, I'm not gonna say any more, because I don't wanna spoil anything for anyone.

In the end, Monsters University is great fun. Pixar has done it again, the director has managed to do it. I don't think that there is gonna be another part to the franchise, which kinda dulls me, but at the end of Monsters University it makes you wanna see more, which you will only get by watching Inc, since its the continuation. Go watch Monsters University, with anyone to be honest. I guarantee you an extremely fun ride that these two will give you.… Expand

Essa obra tem de tudo. Momentos hilários, personagens únicos, diversas referencias ao universo presente no primeiro filme, background de alguns personagens, reflexões importantíssimas que enfrentamos no dia a dia, e tudo isso num ritmo maravilhoso.

Toda discussão em torno de ser o que dizem de você é muito importante, principalmente para o publico mais jovem. O contraste entre os dois protagonistas funciona muito bem para expor privilégios, mas também serve como uma conscientização: todos nossos problemas devem ser considerados; nem desmerecidos ou enaltecidos. Mike é muito esforçado, e sua mente é forte porque toda vez que alguém apontou o dedo na cara dele e disse que ele não podia fazer algo por conta de ter nascido daquele jeito, o mesmo procurara uma maneira e se esforçara 3x mais do que uma pessoa comum só para provar o contrario. E é justamente isso que vemos no filme. Já Sullivan, vem de uma família conceituada, e tem diversos privilégios. Porém, o que todos não vêem é o peso que ele carrega nas costas. Todo o medo de fracassar o aterroriza, mas ninguém além dele sabe disso. Esse cenário é uma alusão a tantas coisas no mundo real que é impossível não se identificar, simpatizar e emocionar com a trajetória dos personagens.

A animação gráfica é excepcional, tendo um avanço bem significativo desde o primeiro filme. A OST é muito boa, e o tema original usado em alguns momentos casou muito bem. O filme é bem amarradinho e não possui pontas soltas, deixando o roteiro mais impressionante ainda. E falando de coisas impressionantes, não posso deixar de mencionar o clímax. A cena de Sullivan e Mike assustado os policiais para voltar ao mundo deles é uma obra de arte. Toda construção, suspense e medo pelos personagens foi muito bem construído. Senti falta do elemento da "energia reversa" como um plot, mas ainda sim funcionou muito bem. O ponto alto do filme, que para mim, separa este da primeira obra quanto o minha animação favorita.

The writing was fantastic and the movie was funny. The animation and the monsters designs were outstanding. It's just a fine movie, but we all expect an outstanding level of quality for every Pixar film and while this is still a decent movie and pretty entertaining an funny, it doesn't live up to other Pixar movies in the past.

There's nothing really emotional or any real conflict. Sure it has a basic but good message about not letting anyone underestimate your abilities and potential, but I feel like that concept wasn't well developed at the end, because our lead characters basically give up and learn nothing (except Sully I guess, but only stopped being a careless showoff).

Overall this is a fine movie, actually really entertaining but I'm sure you won't get anything other than just a good time.

I hope the director Dan Scanlon does a great job with Onward (2020) as that movie will truly demonstrate if he's a talented animated movie director. I can't say that for this movie because this guy had to handle a source material that wasn't of his property.… Expand

This movie isn't bad by any means BUT it was such a disappointment compared to the first one that it tarnishes the film's charm. Overall the baseline idea wasn't bad but a sequel would've been better and really was more requested. At least, Docter's still showing his one-of-a-kind creativity. Instead of merely relying on a previously created world, this origin story envisions the loveable monsters as freshmen undergrads, allowing storyboard artist turned director Dan Scanlon to reintroduce the central characters while still creating a new, meticulously detailed campus setting. The college grounds are dappled with gothic-spired buildings, hacky-sacking students, and aptly annoying orientation leaders, and the animators approach the milieu with an acknowledging, whimsical clarity on which Pixar prides itself. Where Monsters University or: How Pixar Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Formula stumbles, though, is the lack of originality it exhibits in its stale storytelling.

The film is primarily seen through the eye of diminutive Mike Wazowski (voiced again by Billy Crystal), a green ball of sass who's yearned to be a “scarer” ever since a grade-school trip to the familiar factory where screams from children are turned into energy. What he lacks in stature he compensates for in moxie and idealism, and Mike is set on becoming a scarer despite being told by school bullies that he—more goofy than grotesque in appearance—doesn't belong on the scare floor. James P. Sullivan, a.k.a. Sulley (voiced by John Goodman, the deepest-voiced freshman of all time), on the other hand, is a braggadocious beast from the illustrious Sullivan family of scarers and, given his imposing figure and naturally loud roar, he looks the role. It's an uninspired, if expected, dichotomous setup of rivalry, pinning Mike's book smarts (he's read all the Scare Theory he can get his claws on) versus Sulley's inherited talents (“You don't need to study scaring. You just need to do it,” Sulley says, sounding a bit like a naïve art-school brat).

After a scrappy fight between Mike and Sulley during the final exam of Scaring 101, which results in the destruction of a precious souvenir owned by the frigid Dean Hardscrabble (Helen Mirren), the twosome are kicked out of the program and forced to switch their major to Scare Can Manufacturing. Grasping at a chance for redemption and re-entrance into the scaring program, Mike signs up for the Greek Council's Scare Games (“A super intense scaring competition,” the horned, letter-jacket-wearing meathead organizer shouts). Mike enlists in the tournament with the only fraternity available, the oddball-filled Oozma Kappa (the nebbish clans acronym, “OK,” lends an amusing, if eventually tiresome, visual gag) and reluctantly allows former nemesis Sulley to join. Mike brazenly agrees to an ultimatum with Dean Hardscabble: If his team wins they'll all gain admittance to the scaring program, and if they lose Mike and Sulley will be expelled from the university.

The Scare Games—overly reminiscent of certain tournaments for famous young wizards—occupies more than the second half of the film's overlong, nearly two-hour runtime; from here, writer-director Scanlon and two co-writers unimaginatively layer on event after event, eschewing innovative construction in favor of a predictable and tediously structured run toward the finish line as the underdogs consistently scrape by each challenge. Their main foes, unsurprisingly, are preppy, popped-collar alpha monsters and a hardly present sorority (a regressive step since Pixar released the female-driven Brave just a year ago). Monsters University refreshingly picks up some steam in the home stretch, showing a glimmer of the original's cleverness as Mike and Sulley must elicit true horror to scare a more mature audience; the joy of this set piece, however, is still buried under thematic backlogging, as the Aesopian morality about cherishing uniqueness, playing off individual strengths, and overcoming failures through hard work are pressed on even harder.

Despite Monsters University's candy-colored, eye-popping visuals, the sensibility feels off: The plot is more creaky than creative and the humor more forced than embedded, leaving the audience to choke on dust instead of laughs. Lacking in Pixar's trademark sly wit and thematic maturity, the film is unfortunately representative of the once-peerless animation studio's further slide toward the creation of merchandising over magic.… Expand

The story mainly focuses on Mike (voiced by Billy Crystal) going off to Monsters University to become a well-known and famous scarer, but he bumps into the popular and soon to be legendary James P. Sillivan aka "Sulley" (John Goodman), and they develop this kind of rivalry that becomes slowly more competitive than ever.

The biggest issue this film has is that it is a prequel, and not a sequel. Considering that this movie was released well over a decade after the classic 'Monsters, Inc' (2001), there could have been a chance where a sequel's story focuses on the young girl Boo being a teenager, and maybe Sulley and her lose that special connection because we all know that teenagers can be difficult socially. Maybe Boo has a boyfriend, or even a child, and her close monster friend, Sulley, can find this very hard to deal with.

The story here is very paint-by-numbers and, like most sequels, it's very predictable. This is truly Pixar being desperate for sure.… Expand

Although there is undoubtedly a financial foundation for mining past successes, Monsters University is nevertheless a charming, family friendly endeavor and, although it falls short of the best Pixar has brought to the screen over its long association with Disney, it's nevertheless worth a trip to the theater, especially for kids.

As was true of Monsters Inc., Monsters University gets most of its mileage out of the atypical friendship between the big, furry Sullivan (voice of John Goodman) and the little green Cyclops Mike (Billy Crystal). Since Monsters Inc. effectively wrapped up going-forward story possibilities, the creative team elected to go the prequel route, so this is the tale of how Mike and Sullivan met, overcame an initial rivalry, and became friends. Although pitched at a level that won't bore adults, the film's content is kid-centered, complete with life lessons about the values of friendship, cooperation, and believing in oneself and others.

Monsters University's plot thrives on predictability although there is a moderately surprising twist toward the end that allows the proceedings to extend by about fifteen minutes and provides an opportunity for a little more depth. For adults, the movie is less about narrative than enjoying the back-and-forth repartee of Mike and Sullivan, who have all the chemistry of, say, Felix and Oscar. These two are mismatched buddies in the classic sense and Billy Crystal and John Goodman have no difficulty sliding back into the roles they originated a dozen years ago. And, although Monsters University will appeal strongly to young viewers, it's not juvenile in its approach or content. As a result, those who enjoyed Monsters Inc. as children need not be ashamed of being "uncool" by watching Monsters University in their teens. (G-rated movies are generally shunned by anyone over age 12 who isn't a parent.)

Computer generated animation has long since reached a plateau level where the artwork results in the kinds of "oohs" and "aahs" that it once did. We rarely notice the richness of detail evident especially in the background the way we once did because every animated film boasts this - it's expected. Monsters University maintains the standard of quality expected from Pixar although, as is too often the case, the incorporation of 3-D is of dubious value. Seen in 2-D, this is a bright, cheerful motion picture. The tradeoff for getting things to pop off the screen is that the colors aren't as vibrant. I feel like a broken record making this comment: some animated films benefit from 3-D but it's hard to argue that Monsters University is one of them.

Pixar's decision to develop some of their most popular movies into franchises hit a rough patch when Cars 2 failed to perform up to expectations. Monsters University, however, makes the argument that this may have been an unfortunate exception. Although the second Monsters movie won't challenge Toy Story 2 or Toy Story 3 as the best sequel to emerge from the studio, it's a strong enough animated film to rise to the top of summer family-friendly fare. The energy and comedy are strong and the only thing off-color is the palette when seen through 3-D lenses. This isn't a home run for Disney/Pixar but it's a solid double.… Expand

They have a point. Backstory probing may be all the rage right now, but there has yet to be a preboot that truly stands toe-to-toe with the film or films that spawned it. Blame George Lucas if you like, but it’s a format with many more strikes against it than home runs on its score card.

Not only that but a prequel almost always comes with a whiff of creative desperation, its raison d’être invariably owing more to a corporate balance sheet than a blue-sky brainstorm.

All of which appears to stack the odds against Monsters University , the latest evidence of what has become a troublingly repetitive streak for Emeryville’s princes of the pixel (last year’s Brave excepted, this is the third release in a row to be based on an existing title – and Planes , out August 2013, will be the fourth).

Shouldn’t the outfit that brought us Finding Nemo , Up and WALL.E be looking for more beautiful one-offs? It’s the basis of an argument, but one that can wait to be thrashed out another day.

As it is, Pixar’s 14th feature turns out to be an exuberant, vibrant and busy romp: some way from a classic, but perfectly acceptable on its own second-hand, retro- fitted and unapologetically derivative terms.

The last time we saw fanged furball James ‘Sulley’ Sullivan (John Goodman) and green eyeball on legs Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), they were best buds working side by side on the Monsters, Inc. scare floor.

Director Dan Scanlon starts his movie in the same place, but only to introduce Mike as a child and his life-long fascination with the heroic ‘Scarers’ who generate Monstropolis’ power by traumatising dozing human infants.

Determined to become one of their number, the adolescent Mike enrols at the titular MU in the hope of joining its prestigious Scare Program.

In his way, however, stands a certain turquoise ogre: the aforementioned Sulley, a cocksure campus hotshot who – unlike his more cute than creepy roomie – doesn’t need to hit the books to terrify the tots witless.

Turning firm friends into sworn enemies may not be the most original of plot twists, but it’s enough of a rethink to have University challenge our creeping sense of déjà vu.

Nor does it hurt to introduce a competitive element, an accident involving a prized possession of the fearsome Dean Hardscrabble (a dragon-centipede hybrid imperiously vocalised by Dame Helen Mirren) compelling our heroes to sign up for the all or nothing ‘Scare Games’ in order to rejoin the ranks of the collegiate elite.

With rounds involving flesh-swelling stingers, a giant tentacled librarian and a maze straight out of Pac-Man, it’s the Tri-Wizard Cup in all but name.

Its real function, though, is to help warm up the Mike/Sulley bromance, as well as fostering a sense of community within the sad-sack ‘Oozma Kappa’ fraternity to which they have reluctantly been forced to pledge.

The various members of this dotty brotherhood – a five-eyed blob, a two-headed nerd, a long-limbed cousin of The Muppets’ Animal and a sticky old mature student – make for a spectacular posse that leaps off the screen even if you’re not watching the film in the now requisite 3D.

And while cynics might point out that the Disney Store will now be stuffed with as many merchandise-friendly critters as (in)humanly possible, who cares when it gives us such colourful peripheral characters as the purple-haired babes of ‘Python Nu Kappa’ and the squealing Scare Pig mascot of ‘Roar Omega Roar’?

The freakish ingenuity is the movie’s main, ahem, selling point – though it can’t quite compensate for a fundamental shortage of freshness.

Alas, Scanlon and co always seem to be one clawed step and slimy trail behind Pete Docter’s milieu-defining predecessor.

That’s not to say there isn’t fun, excitement and sporadic laughter to be had, not least in a climactic sequence that sees Mike realise his true calling. The message too is a surprisingly bracing one for a family animation: sometimes you have to face up to the fact that just because you want something, that doesn’t make it so.

But then if Monsters University says anything, it’s that even if you’re not at the top of your game, you should still go out there and give them a show – which is exactly what the film does.

Pixar falls back on the tried and tested in an entertaining caper that will be a surefire kid pleaser this summer. Old favourites are always welcome, but it would have been nice to see some more new ideas too.… Expand

Lots of people either say this sucked, or that this was only decent/okay. I thought it was great! It's bright, colourful and playful. Mike, Sully and Randall return, for more monster-sized fun. Monsters University never seemed to capture the same magic that Monsters, Inc. made, but it is still a worthwhile movie, particularly for families. In a day and age filled with smut and garbage across the board, it is nice to have a children's movie that is entertaining without running for the cheap laugh with juvenile jokes about poops and farts. Crystal and Goodman reprise their roles as Mike and Sully, and they do so excellently. Unfortunately, the story line is not as impressive as their acting roles, and at times it felt a bit tedious and presented a few minor breaks in continuity with its predecessor (although most people will not notice, particularly the children that will derive the greatest entertainment from this film).

In an era where the "anyone can do anything" philosophy is deeply rooted in film and popular culture, it is refreshing to see a film where a dose of reality, no matter how silly, is established. Sometimes, a monster just isn't scary. And that's okay to admit, just like I will never be an offensive lineman no matter how much I work out. There were no contrived plot threads or miraculous interventions to attempt to resolve this plot thread in the favor of Mike.… Expand

Inside Out was definitely Pixar's first true masterpiece since Toy Story 3. But MU was the first sign that they were clawing their way back to the top. I was definitely satisfied with this film and it's colorful visuals, great character designs, and decent writing. I'd still have to put it next to their lesser films because I still don't think it's as good as Monsters, Inc. The Story doesn't make too much sense. I understand this is a prequel to Monsters Inc but the way it plays just doesn't excite me. It starts off with Mike going to University to becoming a scary Monster. He finds himself having a hard time trying to roar. Then Sully comes along and he became a jerk towards Mike. Also the monster Deam Hardscrabbble says that the monsters have to complete an exam to determine if they scary enough to become a real monster. If the exam is failed then they are out of the scary program. Which is understanble. I will admit there are some funny scenes but something about the characters didn't appeal to me. Anyways when the final test comes Mike has to prove himself that he is a scary monster after all the training they did. But when Mike scared the simulated kid he automatically wins (which by the way that was a small roar). Mike becomes suspiscous and learns that Sully was the one that made him when. Meaning that he made Mike cheat. He becomes so upset he goes into the Human world from a door. Sully has to find him and apolgize. Soon the cops (in the human world) came to look for the monsters. Sully and Mike set up an abush where Sully comes out and the ropes tangled the cops and Sully roars loudly at the cops causing the scream cans in the Monster world to go crazy. Even HARDSCRABBLE was surprised. So after that incident Mike and Sully were expelled. Meaning they haven't learn a thing. Then after that they find a work place at Monsters INC factory (which marks the begin of Monsters INC) and thats when the movie ends. Overall this movie is a guilty pleasure to me, it didn't have that same emotion to it like Monsters Inc did and the story doesn't make too much sense. So yeah I give it a 6.5/10. You may disagree with me but thats how I felt in my opinion… Expand

Pixar never ceases to amaze me. In almost every movie, if not all, they always have a signature theme: life. The surprising thing about MU is that it's pretty much accurate to how college works in real life. If you're not cut out for it thenPixar never ceases to amaze me. If you're not cut out for it then you're flunked and when you're flunked, that will leave a bad record on you that will haunt your lifetime as you live on. So face it, you're a loser but that doesn't mean that you can't get what you want anymore. If you want it, then get it, believe that you can get it, and bake the cake no matter what are the stakes. Before you even know it, you're already standing on holy ground.
I highly recommend this for high schoolers going to college. If you don't know what it's like then I suggest you get a glimpse of it even if it's in an other worldy (Monster world) view.
Overall, this movie was very inspirational. I hope to watch another Pixar masterpiece in the near future.… Expand

I was a huge fan of original Monsters Inc. and I still love that movie today, in fact it's probably my favorite of all Pixar films. It was great to see quality of a Pixar film again after the disasters that were Cars 2 and Brave, however don't expect this film to be up to par with like Pixar's greatest films like Finding Nemo, the Toy Story Trilogy and Monsters Inc. itself. However Monsters University had a good story, great humor and honestly some of the best animation I've ever seen in a Pixar film, trust me while Pixar already had great animation to start with, this is proof that even their flawless animation skills get even better. It also had it's fair share of comedic moments, but not as much as I expected. This movie introduces a whole plethora of new characters with spectacular actors to do the voices such as Helen Mirren as Dean Hardscrabble, Nathan Fillion as Johnny Worthington, and my personal favorite, Charlie Day's character, Art. Don't listen to the critics, this movie is still filled with loads of Pixar-y goodness that any fan of animated films will enjoy.… Expand

But start afresh, MONSTERS UNIVERSITY is no less entertaining than any other Pixar-labelled “high-art” animations, although it doesn’t reach the peak where the one-two-three punch WALL-E (2008, 9/10), UP (2009, 9/10) and TOY STORY 3 (2010, 9/10) has thrived.

It is a standard college comedy, reminiscent of Harry Potter trio’s adventure in Hogwarts, Mike being a male version of Hermoine the know-it-all, studious but more aggressive and pertinacious; Sullivan is the golden boy who struts and banters for popularity with his inborn stature and family prestige. So from foes to friends they have to learn their lessons in a hard way, Mike being an overachieving geek in the wrong game and Sullivan squandering his time and talent and taking a lofty goal for granted, twist number one; next step, an underdog’s team work to crown the champion in the scary competition, but an indiscreet but understandable machine-rigging undermines the victory, this is twist number two; then an extravaganza into the toxic human world comes to a climax shows the pair’s true potentiality and produces the twist number three; then unlike the conventional happy ending in Disney world, the twist number four heartwarmingly brings them into a niche place and avers one maxim, there isn’t only one way to reach your goal.

Since Mike and Sullivan aren’t exactly the funny wisecrackers, all assortment of monster sidekicks not only have to arrest your glances but also elicit laughters, frankly speaking, the belly-laughing moments are not so frequent as RIO (2011, 8/10) for instance, and occasionally it loses momentum in its execution of the story, the five rounds of competition are unevenly exposed. Randy Newman’s music is still uplifting and all-age friendly, but the excitement doesn’t register anymore, still the brand of Pixar is aiming to a youngster-slanting demography for the sake of maximizing the profit, but the story of undergraduates and fraternity could be more nostalgic to adult audiences, its wavering standpoint may cause detriment and set a barricade to retain the golden medal as the torchbearer in the business above and beyond its unparalleled production team.… Expand

The animation is top notch and all the central characters are done really well. But, I do feel that they threw in too many side characters that looked really interesting, yet never really touched upon. They're either purely decorative or plot devices. A shame.

To be honest, I didn't think Monsters University was as funny as the first movie, BUT, it had allot more depth and Mike & Sullivan's character are given some really great and moving scenes that Crystal and Goodman do very well.

Overall:
While Monsters University isn't the the same as the first movie, it is just as good. It's both deep and light hearted. A fun movie that perhaps could have used a few more laughs. Still, a great movie worth watching.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Monsters University has a creative environment, where unique characters presented as monsters learn to be scary. But, this movie proves something else. It proves that intelligence is more important than scariness; at least based on the movie's universe. The movie isn't prefect. It lacks the emotional impact that it's predecessor leaved and the characters, while generally funny and colorful, they're not as developed. Well, of course, besides of the returning characters.
They are some slightly weak characters such as Dean Hardscrabble, that just doesn't change as a character. She stays the same: emotionless. I know that she is supposed to be emotionless, but a change would be more than satisfying. However, she does her job being dark and all serious.
There's also a slight lack of character development on a few characters, which is kind of disappoint supposing all the potential.
The visuals are stunning and colorful, which is traditional for Pixar. Every character is sophisticated considering their wonderful design. It's masterfully done, even though it's not a surprise.
The story isn't going to emotionally effect you as the predecessor did, but it's alright with a few surprises and twists. It also delivers a positive message, which I mentioned earlier. It had a few plot holes when Sally and Mike went through the door transporting them in human's world, but it doesn't fail just by that. It's no way as engaging as the other Pixar movies, but it's fun.
While not as emotionally effecting as it's predecessor, Monsters University's colorful environments and enjoyable moments make the movie an another success from Pixar. (Final Score: 8.10)… Expand

I think Boo provided a lot of the charm in the first movie as well. It wasn't so obvious until watching a movie without her. Obviously Mike and Sully were both great but the competition with which the film is built upon feels a little weak. I know, it's a children's movie, but that's kind of the problem. While Monsters, Inc. was a film that the adults could appreciate, this one is more of a pure kiddy flick. It's still entertaining to a certain extent but without a lot of the depth from the first one, it's ultimately just a fun kids movie and not much more.… Expand

I really expected more from Pixar, especially considering how fantastic Monsters Inc. was. Unfortunately this prequel ends up falling short,. It's got some humorous moments, but everything from plot to the characters falls short in my opinion. It ends up feeling very dull and predictable unlike most of Pixar's previous works. There are some good things here like Charlie Day's character, watching the Randall and Sully rivalry start, and it will keep kids entertained, but it is one of Pixar's lames efforts. It disappointed the huge Monsters Inc. fan in me, and as a prequel it failed to add anything that would make me rethink events of the first movie. Really I expected more from Pixar.

This is a huge disappointment. It captures none of the Pixar magic and stands beside Cars 2 as one of Pixar's rare disappointments. It may be worth a rental if you were a huge fan of the original and have small kids, but for others it may just be better to skip this and keep those fond memories of Pixar still intact. This does some pretty big damage to their reputation.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s a much maligned fact that every other cinematic offering these days seems to be a reboot or sequel. If it’s for kids, it’s probably computer animated too. As a result, a medium that once blew us away with its revolutionary freshness has now become bland and uninspiring in its ubiquity. Nevertheless, there have been computer animated gems over the years, and Pixar has always led the field, rejecting the safe and lucrative sequels market with a string of trailblazing stand alone features that have truly been works of art, animation quality improving with each release. So it’s a little troubling to see this giant of animation begin succumbing to sequelitis, starting with the release of the tepidly received Cars 2 (2011). Now, they've elected to give us Monsters University, which is, to their credit, a prequel.

The film is preceded by the traditional short, this time The Blue Umbrella. This piece alone is enough to prove that the guys at Pixar have still got it. It’s an exercise in cutting edge computer design, a showcase of stunning photorealistic animation, with just the right tug on the heartstrings. Without spoiling too much, it features heavy rain in an anthropomorphic urban environment.

As for the main feature, the idea is simple: the story of the first meeting between Monsters, Inc.’s Mike and Sulley, chronicling their development from bitter rivals to the firm friends we see at the start of the first film. Billy Crystal and John Goodman return for the lead roles, but aside from a few brief cameos, the rest of the cast and characters are new.

Plot-wise, on the face of it at least, there is little particularly new or innovative, other than the placing of these established characters in a university environment. To prove themselves, Mike and Sulley must join an underdog team of misfits and compete in a big sporting event, the Scare Games, or they’ll be kicked out of university. Then, two thirds of the way through, the inevitable spanner is thrown in the works of the duo’s newly blossoming camaraderie. The morals of acceptance and the realisation of ambition are nevertheless noble; Monsters University is also honest about failure. Notably, the final act moves the plot in an unexpected and welcome direction. Original director Pete Docter, who gave us the sublime Up (2009), hands the reigns to rising storyboard artist Dan Scanlon. This is Scanlon’s directorial debut, so perhaps he has incentive to play it safe.

The university itself is everything that has come to define American higher education since National Lampoon’s Animal House (1978). There are American football games, fraternity rivalries, cheerleaders, big frat house parties and initiations, the Goth kids, the preppies with popped collars, and the theft of a rival establishment’s pig. There’s even a crusty old Dean, voiced by Helen Mirren: the truly terrifying veteran scarer Ms. Hardscrabble, who sounds like a character in a Charles Dickens novel.

Despite this, the character development is well handled, characters new and old are memorable, and above all, it is extremely funny, full of great jokes and hilarious sight gags. It would be a challenge to watch this film without having a good time. The concept is well realised, from the unique designs of individual monsters to the other worldly blend of Ivy League architecture adorned with monster-inspired horns and spines.

As a prequel, the worldview that was challenged as the central theme of Monsters, Inc. is here taken for granted. This is a world where monsters still harvest power from scaring humans, and fear their toxicity. To scare is the monster’s prime directive, enshrined in the hallowed traditions of families and Greek letter organisations, highlighting what must have been the total upheaval of their culture after the revelation at the end of the first film.

A kids’ film in a university environment is a hard balance. It’s hard to notice any particularly knowing winks to an adult audience beyond the obvious university clichés, and the potentially rowdy university environment has understandably been whitewashed to remove any suggestion of debauchery. At the same time, I wonder how many younger children can relate to, or appreciate such a setting. But perhaps they don’t need to. I don’t know how most kids will react to the film, but the young lad behind me in the cinema seemed to be having a good time, clapping along enthusiastically with the crowd at the Scare Games. Visually, it’s bright, colourful, and still stunning.

As ever, the appeal is still wide reaching. Monsters University is not just a kids’ film. It can be no coincidence that the children who first enjoyed Monsters, Inc. are now just about heading off to university themselves. With good Pixar characters being what they are, it’s a treat to revisit these much loved characters once more. I went into Monsters University with very little in the way of expectations and I came out surprised and disappointed at the same time as the prequel to Monsters Inc is both wonderful and aggravating at the same time. When Mike Wasowksi (Billy Crystal) arrives at Monsters University he meets rebellious James Sullivan (John Goodman) and the two tangle to become the greatest scarers until they are forced to team up to avoid getting expelled. University does manage to avoid the pratfalls of prequels by keeping the story light and narrow in scope while filling the film with a brand new crop of monsters and a few choice cameos for longtime monsters fans. However it also lacks that Monsters Inc had, a no holes barred adventure with a beautiful ending. University is fun and has some action in it but it lacks the guts of its predecessor and feels like its lacking because of it. As usual the animation is stellar with Pixar constantly raising the bar on themselves but it all feels similar. If anything, Monsters Inc has robber University of the awe this film would have caused as a stand alone feature. Crystal and Goodman are having fun doing the voices yet again as these two really come alive. The film depicts the beginning of a beautiful friendship and it finds its heart through this odd couple pairing but it lacks the child like innocence of Inc and ultimately if there is no Boo then you won't be able to achieve the same effect making it a good thing University doesn't try to.… Expand

M.U was just as heart felt as i was expecting and i loved every moment of it and the last half an hour stole the show, really showing a strong bond between mike and sulley. The only characters i didn't like were the oozma kappas this is because they were to cliche. with the exception of the old man, i don't know but i liked him. Why, oh why are pixar so good at making me emotional unlike any other film. I love pixar.… Expand

Its good to see how it all began before Sullivan and Mike went to Monsters Inc. The jokes were spot on, and the animation was fantastic, but i somehow lacked connection with the main characters. Also, if you didn't watch the first movie,Its good to see how it all began before Sullivan and Mike went to Monsters Inc. This movie will be much more enjoyable if you see the Inc. one first, and then the prequel.… Expand

Not a 10/10 masterpiece like Toy Story or Finding Nemo however for its premise it does everything right. I enjoyed the whole thing, never felt bored, laughed out loud and even had some great nostalgic moments!
