The Disney princess is back, with not even a hint of a romantic interest to distract from her heroic (heroinic?) arc. As a fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda, I am ecstatic about the songs. The themes of islands, heroism, family, and tradition are right up his alley. The Rock is perfectly cast and gives a career-high performance. No one could have done his part better. I am not an expert on Polynesian culture, but everything feels perfectly authentic. They've come a long way since the Tiki Room. And finally, the animation is another step forward for Disney. They've always excelled at rendering water, but the water is literally a character in the story here. Expand

Baby groot definitely stole the show. Thought the family focus was a good choice too.

Every time a new one comes out, I think to myself "but the last one was so good! How could they even come close to that?" And then, my expectations are exceeded. Such is the case with Disney's 56th animated film "Moana," which is a fantastic film with a fun story that, while not terribly original, is told well enough to make it feel fresh. On top of that, the characters are great, the music is catchy and memorable, the film is funny, exciting, and heartfelt, and the animation...oh boy, the animation. This is one of the most beautiful animated films I have seen, and watching it all in action just feels so, for lack of a better word, magical. There's no other way I can say it, go see "Moana." And if you end up loving the film after reading this review, well, "What can I say except, 'you're welcome?'" Expand

Related media: There are no media related to this film. I am also not familiar with Hawaiian/Polynesian stories/myths/religions.

What's it like?: It is like a couple of films in the past where the elders try to prevent their child/children from venturing out of their village/town for fear of the evils/nastiness of the world outside of the village/town. The Village is one such example. Pros:
1. It is a good as Frozen, but has more realism, but see Cons # 1.
2. It is very beautiful, particularly the parts showing the movement of water and on scene with many colours. Frozen did not look as good in this area.
3. This film introduces some aspects of Hawaiian/Polynesian stories/myths/religions, and that's fun to watch. 4. There are some nice original songs.
5. There is a nice twist at the end.

Cons: 1. There are many parts that deal with magic and spirits, which lessen the realism.

How would the the different age groups rate it?
Children: Excellent.
Teens: Excellent.
Young adults: Good
Medium age adults: Good
Old adults: Excellent.
My rating: 5/5 (no half scores). It's worth it to watch it in the cinemas and then buy the DVDs.

Atop of that the singing is nice and not overburdened. Even the character Maui makes a jab at this when he says something like “If you start singing now I will puke”. I am the person who mostly dislike Disney songs except for Encanto, Frozen and a few other examples but say here it is done well enough here to win me over. I did watch this movie because friends recommend it and I was not disappointed. This movie is set in Polynesia. The Polynesians were the best naval navigators in history of mankind. Even the colonial captains were deeply impressed and this is a statement. They navigate by starts but also could read wave patters, clouds and animal behavior to find even the most remote islands. Just look how big the Pacific Ocean is and that they discovered all island. Their culture is also remarkable but I get off track. The events start far before the events of the movie when Maui a shape-shifting demi god steals the hearth of the goodness Te Fiti which has the shape of a pounamon stone. However the hearth is a precious object and he loses it immediately in the ocean as Te Ka a volcanic demon attacks him. A millennia later the chief of the Motunui has a daughter named Moana who is blessed by the ocean itself. She is drawn to the open water but the Motunui don't go there. She is told the old stories by her grandmother and wants to safe her people as the events of Maui’s acts reach slowly the island. This is the set up for the story. It is surprisingly smart, has good twists and is really entertaining. The main strengths are the characters and their journey. Both Moana and Maui are relatable, believable and feel like real characters. Their chemistry is so great that no moment is wasted. They grow a lot and the characters / heroes journey is truly excellent. I praise the voice actors here too. Auli’I Cravalho for Moana and Dwayne Johnson as Maui. I should say that the rest is also really good and I praise Rachel House as Tala, Temuera Morrison as Tui and of cause Jemaine Clement as Tamatoa. Watch the end credits scene for a great joke. The humor is excellent too. Every joke works and the humor does not harm the serious parts of the story. They took a lot of effort here and I praise the whole team. The animations have a great style and capture the Polynesian feeling. Be warned that I am no native or expert on this and it could be awfully wrong even making a fool out of me here. However the movie looks gorgeous. Overall I have to give a 10/10. It might not be the best animated movie ever but is so entertaining and enjoyable that a 9/10 feels wrong or too harsh. Expand

From what I've heard, the cultural depiction is quite accurate and it's has some valuable lessons in it too.

Maui might just be my second favorite Disney animated character after the one and only Genie of the Lamp. The songs are incredibly soothing and so good to listen to. The animations are breathtaking as well. If you haven't watched it, I strongly suggest you to check it out with the whole family (Or just by yourself)!

This is arguably one of if not the best movie Disney has made in years (and with how good their films usually are, this is saying a lot).

To start, the movie has a very enjoyable story. It has an overall simple plot, but the story takes the main characters to many different places with many cool characters and enemies. The movie constantly ups the stakes with every encounter which makes it that much more exciting.

The voice acting is fantastic as well, as are the singing. Most of the songs will be classics someday, and the main one is just as catchy as "Let it Go". The movie also looks beautiful visually as well.

Overall, Moana is a fantastic film that I am glad I saw. I would say this is a must see for any fan of animation, Disney or overall good movies.

For a while, Walt Disney was considered the best animation studio winning over many fans who praised it for its way of adapting older stories and making them seem both nostalgic and fresh. Impressed by the success of its sibling studioFor a while, Walt Disney was considered the best animation studio winning over many fans who praised it for its way of adapting older stories and making them seem both nostalgic and fresh. Impressed by the success of its sibling studio "Pixar", Walt Disney decided to step in computer animation, which didn't work out that well for them at first. It wasn't until a couple of years ago that they managed to get their first critical and box office hit. From a number of great movies (Tangled, Wreck-it Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6, Zootopia) none of them has touched me as much as "Moana".

"Moana" tells the story of a teenage girl of the same name, living with her parents in a beautiful island in ancient Polynesia. She's the daughter of the chief and she wants to travel far away from her home, which her father doesn't approve. She does it anyway and in her journey to save her people, she's joined by a silly chicken named HeiHei and the demigod Maui.

The film has plenty of humor, heart, beautiful imagery and music and three dimensional characters. It's the best musical Disney has made in a while. It's full of twists that are effective and thought provoking. Moana is another flawless addition to the Disney Animation Canon and a must see.

It's also a movie with an ecological theme... I personally find myself in Moana, I'm identical to her... it was nice to see a heroine who finally resembled me perfectly (especially in her sensitive and compassionate side)... this didn't happen by Belle of "Beauty and the Beast" (another Classic Disney I love)! When I saw the trailers and everything, I expected that I would have liked the movie, but not so much to consider it among my favorite animated films (and not only), I was surprised! Also, this movie has crazy characters, wonderful music, sparkling colors, it's fun, has a majestic and epic tone, it's sometimes dark (and I like it so much), not to mention that it's very faithful to Polynesian culture, and this is very beautiful! All these things made me love this movie so much, and besides it's very moving and emotional! I cried in 7/8 scenes (and I'm not joking)... I recommend it to anyone!!! Another Disney Masterpiece for me!!! Expand

I laughed out loud 2-3 times, which is pretty rare for me seeing a movie, and had a big smile on my face for at least 1 hour and 30 minutes while in the remaining time tears!

There is so much to talk about while reviewing this film not least of all is the imaginative animation from the colors used, the many different characters, the variations of the sea btu most of all the expressions of each of the characters whether talking or not.

Dwayne Johnson, just voted the sexiest man alive, the highest paid actor in the movies and the star of the successful HBO series "Ballers" plays Maui and the drawing of his character, with animated tattoos all over his body, is fun in itself. Auli'i Cravalho debuts as Moana has a beautiful voice and plays the princess, though she insists she is not a princess as if that is a wrong thing to be. The banter, written by the screenwriter, Jared Bush, is not only fun but smart. Along with the two co-stars there is grandmother everyone would love to have voiced by Rachel House, the dumbest rooster you will ever see on the screen voiced by Alan Tudyk, Temuera Morrison as Moana's father, Jemaine Clement as a crab that has one of the many excellent songs, Nicole Scherzinger as Moana's mother, who is drawn too young looking more like her sister and my favorite, lovable creature, Puanani Cravalho as the pig!

The songs are infectious, strong and one or two might show up as an Oscar nomination. They were written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, of "Hamilton" fame, Mark Mancina and Samoan Opetaia Tavita Foa'i.

The drawings and the animation of the characters are mind boggling as are the scenes on the ocean and islands.

Treat yourself, and take a kid along if you would be too embarrassed going into seeing a 'cartoon' . Animated films of today are not like your parents or even you knew and these are also by Disney with a little/lot of help from Pixar!

"Moana" is a delightful film that should seen by adults and kids of all ages!

The songs are uplifting, and the visuals are breathtaking. Jemaine Clement as Tamatoa is a definite highlight, but all the voice actors are doing an excellent job. Having watched the movie twice - which I hardly ever too - I can't find a serious flaw with it, except the length, and the somewhat sudden ending. There are some pesky symbolism & social messages, if you're looking for them, but they're not forced upon the audience like in many other current films, so you can choose to simply enjoy an adventure in which everyone is great in their own way. Despite a conventional story and some plot inconsistencies, Moana's melodious soundtrack, faultless voice acting, staggering animation, wonderful screenplay, and well-rounded characters lifts it above the tide.

Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker ('The Little Mermaid' and 'Aladdin'), this story follows the adventures of a young, Polynesian girl named Moana (voiced by Auli'i Cravalho) who dreams of going beyond the reef outside her island, but her parents (Temuera Morrison and Nicole Scherzinger) forbid her to do so, since her father also attempted this, and worries that it's too risky for his young daughter. However, her grandmother Tala (Rachel House) convinces her that she can do whatever she wants. Moana discovers something about her family, and decides to go on the adventure. It's there that she is left with HeiHei (voiced by Alan Tudyk), a clumsy chicken that provides so many laughs. Also, she meets a Demi God named Maui (Dwayne Johnson) who reluctantly agrees to help her on her journey, despite her lack of skills and his eccentric, albeit, cocky and cynical personality. This is another animated classic from Walt Disney Animation Studios, once again continuing their winning streak throughout this decade. The animation, the details on the water is one of their best works. The songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda are also very catchy, my favorite one being "You're Welcome" by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson himself. It's very funny, very educational, very moving at times... another Disney triumph. Expand

Moana was the type of movie in where I didn't really want to see it, having low expectations, but came out really happy ~ except for a special reason. Moana, the movie itself, was a incredibly stunning well-animated film. The story was beautifully told and I was shocked at how good the movie was. But unfortunately, the special reason, was that during the last 30 minutes of the film, two people were arguing in my theater causing security come in and interrupt the film. Many people were scared because they thought one of them had a gun. Anyways, the movie was ruined and I'm a bit sad that I didn't get to see the ending, but Moana itself was still a great film, which doesn't affect the rating I am giving the film. (87/100)

A Seesaw of Dissimilar Components

"Moana" is the 56th Disney animated feature film after "Zootopia", at the beginning of the year. Directed with atticism, harmony and deep deferences by the Polynesian culture by seasoned pair-director John Musker and Ron Clements, the newest treasure of the factory follows Moana (Auli'i Cravalho), a brave young falling in love with wonders in the ocean. She lives accompanied by her sensitive mother Sina (Nicole Scherzinger), her over-protective father Tui (Temuera Morrison) and her former navigator tribe in the radiant island of Motunui—located in the most westerly place in Chile, in life real,— they have lodged there once a nautical misfortune caused absolute cease of their trips on the sea. However, Mother Nature seems to annihilate crops and imposing beauties in which they live, by which, Moana is driven to set sail in search of Maui ("The Rock")—the demigod who stole the precious stone from the heart of nature,— for giving back the beautiful gem to its home, causing the growth of needy groceries and nature. As is recurrent in the films of the study, Clements and Musker's road movie/ buddy movie will place the duo protagonist in more than one risky and brilliant adventure, forging naturally a spontaneous and classic friendship. What most stands out here is that we don't have a "Princess" itself—even so she proceed from powerful parents,—we don't have a woman of small waist, albino skin, silky hair, there is also no stepmothers or perfidious witches, there are no enchanted castles; however, the best is there's no love interest, quite the contrary, we have an essential story of female emancipation, maturity, and fellowship.

Like the best Disney movies, "Moana" is electrifying in its traditionalism. From the first moment to the last, the film is a profusion of vividness, verism, and buoyant pictures, reaching optic magnetism that got "Finding Nemo" and "The Good Dinosaur". The textures, looks, styles, volumes and dimensions of each well-prepared features are the real links allowing to bring the story with raging incentive from adult or child audience. Ocean's life—the water is one of the characters more complicated of conceiving in computer-animated fantasy films,—marine flora and fauna—although they are not too visible, What we watched is impressive,— greenish environment of the island, the crafted visuals to Polynesian culture, Moana's curls, Maui's tattoos, everything, everything absolutely has a beautiful extravagance visual. If it were for its realistic images, this would be an instant masterpiece.

The Achilles' heel comes from its screenplay written by the vast crew members (8 screenwriters). Because, the story has been related incessantly in previous animated projects; this time, it is the same essence merged into radiant pictures and even though she is the most distant in princess movies, it does not save to feel repetitive. Throughout the feature film, the effort—and the lassitude—is remarkable since they wished to have original and entertaining situations, such as the descent into the monsters world, nevertheless, trivialities of the genre are palpable. Rather than palpable are its grueling references—no, we are not talking about the 'easter eggs', and by the way, I only caught one: Sven from "Frozen",—the selfsame directors confessed using even some of the material from their prior works. References from the apocalyptic "Mad Max" by George Miller to the vibrant "Mulan" by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook.

This is the best original motion picture soundtrack of Disney in years. Which is led by American actor and writer Lin-Manuel Miranda, who has monopolized lately the public points of attraction starring and creating in the Broadway musicals "In the Heights" and "Hamilton"—especially by this last one. Although, many English-speaking viewers attended to movie theaters for seeing "Moana" for two reasons primarily—leaving most important aspects aside—: the first one, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who lends his voice to Maui and the second one, by acclaimed Miranda's compositions. It would not be a surprise to see coming nominations at full speed for such great achievement, simply beautiful.

"Moana" from Disney is a delightful journey to open ocean, it is inquisitively a rigorous work. Our aural and optical receivers will experience an unimaginable wonders feast, nonetheless, its narrative and treatment are not at the same level than artistic area. There is no doubt that kids and adult going to enjoy the adventures of the new and less conventional Disney princess, and although the factory is trying to break slowly modern community's unshakable taboos, there's still a long way to go. Disney, thanks for providing pure films, however, they can always be improved further, and they have extravagant opportunities here.

Moana is a CG animated film which takes place on a South Pacific island about a young girl named Moana, played by newcomer Auli’i Cravalho, who longs to explore the ocean but is forbidden to leave as a result of her overprotective father who is also the Chief. To make matters worse, Moana’s Grandmother tells stories to the children of a demigod named Maui (played by Dwayne Johnson) who can change shape and experience wonders of the great sea which are all just out of reach from those stuck on the island.

Moana features catchy songs and fantastic animation in addition to a well crafted story that feels both ancient and modern at the same time. Moana and Maui have excellent chemistry on screen and both Cravalho and Johnson surprised us with their ability to convey humor, emotion and song with their voices. We were glad to see a female protagonist introduced into the Disney universe who wasn’t part of a love interest or even have a love interest at all – unless you count a love for her people and the ocean. The movie also does a nice job of conveying Polynesian/Samoan culture and even has a couple of catchy songs sung in Traditional Tokelauan.

Overall, Moana is enjoyable and fun to watch – if there was a negative side about the movie it would be that much time is spent with the two characters on a raft and reminded us a bit of the Kevin Costner movie Waterworld. We would have liked to have seen a secondary plot that may have kept us involved for the rollercoaster ride and maybe even some explanation as to the significance of some of the cultural elements germane to the story.

To transverse the world in which Moana takes place is undoubtedly an experience of blissful joy. The film’s directors (John Musker, Ron Clements) and its animators have constructed the South Pacific in a rather elegant manner — oceans appear almost life-like in color / clarity and the islands themselves are a hypnotic lush green. The byproduct of this polished look is an Island that enthralls the viewer; you feel compelled to plunge amidst this gorgeous world and experience first-hand its bright palette. This in of itself is the magic behind Disney: a superimposed prettiness paralleled with a charming narrative.

Seasoned Disney directors John Musker and Ron Clements (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules) adhere to an already established blueprint: we have a three-dimensional protagonist (Moana) whose overt wanderlust impels her to adventure beyond her Polynesian village in spite of her fathers overprotective nature. Interesting plot developments are made as we see the relationship between Moana and the pretentious demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) evolve. The narrative advances like the typical hero’s journey — unique in that we have a teen heroine sans a love interest. Moana consistently hits the mark in that its story is entirely revolved around its heroine — a headstrong Polynesian girl who is unapologetically herself. With Moana, Disney finds itself once again a juggernaut in the world of film.

"Frozen" made about a billion dollars world wide. This latest Princess film follows the standard formula. This time an Island Princess leaves home for an adventure (as opposed to leaving a castle, or tree top, etc). The film looks great, has a few really good songs and a couple not so good, and some humor here and there (although not as funny as some other Princess films like "Tangled"). It even boasts the world's stupidest chicken, although that schtick got old pretty quickly. Moana's traveling companion, Maui, is the standard issue annoying character who fights Moana every step of the way, until the end of course. Despite the lack of originality it is a well made film and I enjoyed it. Boys will have to wait for Disney's competition to come up with another "How to Train Your Dragon" or "Kung Fu Panda" sequel to appeal to them and fill the void left by Disney. Expand

Yet another kinetic and truly magical animated experience from Disney, Moana is a great combination of emotion, music, andThe last film I saw in 2016 and the first film I have reviewed in 2017, Moana is a great finale for the year. Yet another kinetic and truly magical animated experience from Disney, Moana is a great combination of emotion, music, and mythology. With brilliantly composed music, infectious songs, great comedy, and lovely characterization, Moana is a showcase for the level of storytelling that Disney is able to churn out in its animated works. Between this, Zootopia, and Finding Dory, it was truly a banner year for the studio giant, both with its films and its box office receipts.

Featuring all the Disney trademarks with a princess, a goofy and boisterous sidekick, animal sidekicks, restrictive parents, and dead relatives, Moana is a journey of self-discovery. With Moana (Auli'i Cravalho) chosen by the ocean to restore the heart of Te Fiti in order to life the darkness that consumes her homeland, she must take demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) - who stole the heart - with her in order to complete the mission. A long and arduous journey, it is through this journey that the film reveals its ultimate moral: you must know who you are to know where you are going. While following your heart and inner compass are certainly other elements of Moana, none feature nearly as prominently as the portion that stands as the ultimate moral in my eyes. There are repeated references to this moral throughout and the song, "How Far I'll Go" - also the most prominent song on the soundtrack and the one that begins to play during the credits - is very much about this moral as well. The mythology of Moana's people supports this as well, as they were once voyagers. As shown in a flashback song, the voyagers kept a sharp eye out for where they were going, largely based upon where they had been and where home was located. This can be adjusted for everybody in the audience by simply stating: follow your dreams by knowing where you were and using it to help you get where you want to be. As is typical, this is a great message for children and adults alike.

Using magical-looking blues and purples throughout, the film is incredibly vibrant. With large and impeccably animated musical set pieces alongside these gorgeous visuals (especially those with the sting ray), Moana is a feast for the sense. Your eyes will love it and so will your ears. The visuals and the music are constantly in great harmony. The visuals are certainly bolstered by the excellent animation that, on one watch, had no noticeable flaws. At all times, the film utilized its animation to create fun and interesting visuals that will undoubtedly keep kids engaged and not annoy parents, even with its incredible vibrancy. The music, with great melodies and tunes influenced by its location, is tremendous. Though not the best music of the year (La La Land), Moana is a film that certainly packs a punch with emotional, compelling, and wonderfully composed/written music. Some have said that the music is forgettable, but I found it to be anything but with songs such as "How Far I'll Go" certain to find a home in my Spotify.

The story, if simplistic, is still packed with emotion and comedy. From the great stupid chicken to provide comic relief to the dead relatives to deliver the pathos, Moana is a film that plays with your emotions. It is capable of making you laugh one second and hold back tears the next. This is a balance that the very best Disney animated movies can create and it is one that Moana excels in harnessing. Though it is obviously manipulative at times, the sight of the stingray never made me not well up, so clearly it was incredibly effective with the manipulation. The film is also incredibly adept at balancing the music, the comedy, and plot. Though the plot is, again, simplistic, it is still engaging. Serious moments of adventure or mythology are never interrupted by comedy from the chicken or out of place musical moments. Each element has its place and Moana is able to balance the trio. Given the inclinations of another Disney property (Marvel) to inject humor in all serious moments, I feared this one would fall into the same traps, but it never took the bait. Instead, it waited for the serious moments to play out and then it introduced the comedy. By picking its spots with the comedic relief, the comedy always feels fresh and, well, funny.

An incredible work by Disney Animation, Moana shows that the mega studio still has what it takes to create wonderful stories about Princesses, big brutes, and dead relatives. Though it sticks to the formula very closely, it is always engaging, moving, and funny, so that is more than enough for me. In 20 years, Moana will likely be cited alongside Frozen as the "classics" for the kids of today.

Moana exudes beauty and charm. There are several very nice songs. The power of the deep blue ocean is amazing to witness. And I love the fact that there are no references to relationships whatsoever. A better story than I expected and a strong leading female character. I also love the representaion of that culture and the fact that they show them eating mostly vegetables and healthy food (the world needs to change once and for all sooner or later in that regard. It´s coming. There´s no other way). It´s a pity that it was released the same year as Zootopia (phenomenal and even better than Moana) and the oscar had to go to Zootopia, because Moana certainly deserves the oscar way more than Frozen (which sadly got it in its respective year). That´s for sure. Must see for Disney audiences. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Moana is the lastest iteration of the Disney princess movie. The songs are catchy, and the simple storyline and catchy music harkens back to classics such as The Little Mermaid. The art is art is colorful and uses soft lines, giving it a feel that is distinct from other contemporary animated features. The protagonist is a girl who grows up in a conservative society and subsequently goes against the established conservative patriarchy to save the day (thereby invalidating the prescriptions of the patriarchy). Judging from some of the 0 star reviews of this movie, a subset of the population finds such themes offensive. If this is you, then this film is not for you. Expand

Moana is a feel good Disney film, though is slightly formulaic is original in its study of other cultural backgrounds and legends. It almost feels like what the sequel to Ferngully should have been.

The visual design is stunning, and there are some brilliant sequences, but the pacing and endless exposition mean that, at around two hours, it's unnecessarily long for the story to be appreciated. Whilst the performances are good, the soundtrack is one which is somewhat bland for a Disney film; catchy tunes, forgettable lyrics. A nice family film overall, but not one of Disney's best. 7.76/10

A special mention, however, must go to the brilliant Inner Workings, which is worth the price of admission on its own. Funny and poignant, this is a superb short film delightfully executed. 9.23/10

The animation is excellent; although for a disney movie this is to be expected. The songs are a big part of this movie and were sung beautifully. The core story-line of Moana is simple yet it is engaging. The underlying story, motivations and reasons however bring a lot of questions; especially when it is thought over after the movie ends. Moana is a great disney movie especially for those who watch it purely for enjoyment and laughs. However if one is looking for a well thought out story Moana lacks in comparison to recent disney movies such as Big Hero 6, Inside Out or Zootopia. Expand

Disney has struck gold here! The visuals, the music and the sense of adventure are all wonderfully presented in a colourful conglomeration. It doesn't follow a particularly groundbreaking narrative but everything somehow feels sea-air fresh.

The stories of ancient tribal cultures tend to get lost in the flash and glitz of 21st-century storytelling but Disney has a lot of skill redrafting ‘old tales’. Moana is exceptional cinema. Lavish scenes, vibrant heartfelt characters, and joyous songs combine in that Disney style to share the tales of another whole new world.

Like all of the Disney products, there is a sprinkling of shoehorned emotional moments that could have hit the cutting room floor but, in total, it’s entirely satisfying. I’m still humming the songs and counting down the days until I can see it again.

While I typically have a problem with cookie cutter plots, like the generic buddy cop action in Zootopia, the Disney princess formula has never left a bad taste in anyone's mouth.

Sure it's the same old story, but as the saying goes "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." Moana stars a young Polynesian princess who has been chosen by the water to restore the heart of Te Fiti and save the world. She succeeds in her mission with all of the classic Disney tropes. Running away from her family while singing a song about being free, but not before one of the family members die. Bringing an animal sidekick on her journey. You all know the drill. While the movie does make an attempt to joke about the Disney stereotypes of a princess, that doesn't exactly justify them. Joking about how you're stealing candy from a baby doesn't justify the fact that you're still stealing candy from a baby.

The characters in this movie are very likable. Moana may not stand out as a "powerful female lead" like the feminists may want you to believe, but she gets an A for effort. There's no romantic subplot, and Moana does do fairly decent on her own sometimes. She does mostly get help from the ocean and Maui, but she does have a few moments where she sines. Maui, played by Dwayne Johnson, is a very entertaining portrayal of the Polynesian hero. He definitely dishes out some hilarious jokes, and his development feels believable as he just wants love from the humans and would do anything to earn it.

The animation in the movie is downright jaw-dropping. The water glows and moves in a way unlike any other water I've seen in animation. I couldn't even imagine PIXAR, the king of CGI animation, creating something as beautiful as Moana. They capture the feel of Polynesian islands without fail, and the mythical places, like the realm of monsters, feel very creative. Everything on the characters looks natural as well. The way they move, the way their hair moves, the way their clothing moves. It's all incredible.

The soundtrack for the movie is definitely one of the most unique in Disney's recent lineup. Sure you'll have your generic magical sidekick "Friend Like Me" pop up in the form of Dwayne Johnson's "You're Welcome" or a song about a girl being free as cookie cutter as "Let it Go" in the form of Moana's "How Far I'll Go" but the movie is also has some very bizarre sounding tracks that feel as though they could only fit in this move. "Shiny" is a good example of this.

Overall, I highly recommend Moana. It's a beautifully animated adventure starring two of Disney's most likable protagonist in their fun song-filled quest to save the day. There's great humor, a light nature that's easy to get into, and a bouncy soundtrack that's difficult to get out of your head. While it does fall victim to the typical Disney princess plot, minus the romance, it's not enough to leave a huge scratch on this magnificent movie.

The character of Moana was well developed, as you see her be indecisive and unsure, and you see why due to her upbringing and the general backstory of the island. You cared for her and her silly companions, who were (albeit surprisingly) quite funny on more than one occasion. Dwayne Johnson was very good as Maui, and his you went through a love-hate relationship with him, therefore his character was well developed as well. The songs that are featured in this movie are, for me, some of Disney's best in a while, You're Welcome (Maui's song, I'm 99% sure that's the title) was an extremely catchy tune, for me as memorable as King Louie's song in the Jungle Book (though not as good as Friend Like Me, for me the best ever Disney song xD). All in all, beautiful animation, engaging characters and very, very good songs. Expand

Maui, the shape-shifting demigod and master of sailing, steals the heart to give humanity the power of creation. However, Te Fiti disintegrates, and Maui is attacked by another who seeks the heart: Te Kā, a volcanic demon. Maui is blasted out of the sky, losing both his magical giant fishhook and the heart to the depths of the sea.

A millennium later, the ocean chooses Moana, daughter of Motunui's chief Tui, to return the heart to Te Fiti. Tui takes Moana away, causing her to lose the heart. Tui and Sina, Moana's mother, try to keep her away from the ocean to prepare her for ascension as the island's chief. Sixteen years later, a blight strikes the island, killing vegetation and shrinking the fish catch. Moana suggests going beyond the island's reef to find more fish and figure out what is happening, but Tui forbids it. Moana tries conquering the reef but is overpowered by the tides and shipwrecked back to Motunui with Pua the pig.

Moana's grandmother, Tala, shows her a secret cave of ships, revealing that their people were voyagers until Maui stole Te Fiti's heart; the ocean was no longer safe without it. Tala explains that Te Kā's darkness is poisoning the island, but can be cured if Moana finds Maui and makes him restore the heart of Te Fiti, which she gives to Moana. Tala falls ill and, on her death bed, tells Moana that she must depart to find Maui.

Setting sail on a camakau from the cavern, Moana is caught in a typhoon and shipwrecked on an island where she finds Maui, who boasts about his achievements. She demands that Maui return the heart, but he refuses and traps her in a cave. She escapes and confronts Maui, who reluctantly lets her on the camakau. They are attacked by Kakamora—small, coconut-armored pirates—who seek the heart, but Moana and Maui outwit them. Moana realizes Maui is no longer a hero since he stole the heart and cursed the world, and convinces him to redeem himself by returning the heart. Maui first needs to retrieve his magical fishhook in Lalotai, the Realm of Monsters, from Tamatoa, a giant coconut crab. While Moana distracts Tamatoa, Maui retrieves his hook but discovers he can no longer control his shape-shifting. He is overpowered by Tamatoa, but Moana's quick thinking allows them to escape with the hook. Maui reveals that his first tattoo was earned when his mortal parents abandoned him as an infant, and the gods, taking pity on him, granted him his powers. After reassurance from Moana, Maui teaches her the art of sailing, regaining control of his powers, and the two grow closer.

They arrive at Te Fiti's island, only to be attacked by Te Kā. Moana refuses to turn back, resulting in Maui's hook being badly damaged. Unwilling to lose his hook in another confrontation with Te Kā, Maui abandons Moana, who tearfully asks the ocean to find someone else to restore the heart and loses hope. The ocean obliges and takes the heart, but Tala's spirit appears, inspiring Moana to find her true calling. She retrieves the heart and sails back to confront Te Kā. Maui returns, having had a change of heart, and buys Moana time to reach Te Fiti by fighting Te Kā, destroying his hook in the process. Moana discovers Te Fiti is missing, and realizes Te Kā is Te Fiti, corrupted without her heart. Moana tells the ocean to clear a path, allowing her to return Te Fiti's heart, and the restored goddess heals the ocean and islands of the blight. Maui apologizes to Te Fiti, who restores his hook and gives Moana a new boat before falling into a deep sleep and becoming a mountain.

Moana bids farewell to Maui, returning home where she reunites with her parents. She takes up her role as chief and wayfinder, leading her people as they resume voyaging.

The film is directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, who were originally planning to adapt Terry Prachett's Mort as their next project, but rights issues prevented this. Moana is a Disney classic, but it is not without its flaws. The story is intricate but familiar, and the film bears striking similarities to Disney's previous classics. Moana is a refreshing change from Disney's usual insert-Prince-here love story, and the character development is charming and genuine. The animation is stunning and the film is also very funny, with a handful of genuine belly laughs. Despite its familiar story and character types, Moana is a film for all ages that will leave viewers with ear-worm songs and a warm heart.

John Lasseter's demands for research pays dividends in the presentation and yet having spent some time reading up on the actual mythology of Maui, I'm left disappointed by how the Disney mash-up is portrayed. Almost all of the Maui mythology is contained in his one musical number ("You're Welcome") while the bulk of the story being told is a mix between two versions of Maui mythology with a generous side-helping of the Greeks' Prometheus. Overall entertaining, well acted, great musical numbers and singing performances by all; there are worse ways of spending 2 hours. I just wish Maui's story and importance to Moana's people was told a bit better and not condensed into what was essentially a mythological crossover with a forced emotional bend ("I was discarded as a child and want to make the humans love me!"). Ultimately, and perhaps unfortunately, it won't have the musical staying power of Frozen or the cuteness factor of Zootopia. It'll be remembered as a good movie but not quite up to the same level as recent Disney releases. While Frozen merchandising is still going strong, Moana has all but fallen off, with the only recent resurgence due to the impending Blu-ray release. Expand
