The biggest gripe I have is that it's just goofy. It feels like the plot to a bad superhero movie or the plot to a spinoff ff film. The villains, yes villains without spoiling anything, were not only lackluster but goofy to then point where I questioned if I was in a MI movie and not an Austin powers one. The main motivations of one of the bad guys isn't clear as he works for the other one. He has tech in the film, especially involving a casket, where I laughed a little when I saw it. Looked like something out of a B level superhero film. The direction they went with the main top level bad guy is a direction I just don't like. It makes the stakes feel higher but they honestly never do anything that special with it. This concept has been done before and way better in those other fimms. To a point, where I thought for sure they would going to utilize it way better and way more menacing but everytime they dropped the ball. Even though I don't like the direction they're going I can see the potential it can bring but hopefully they do a better job with it in the next one. Now, let's talk about the charcters. Ethan Hunt feels like he's regressed in the film and not in a natural way. I know he's running up against the biggest threat but this film feels like he's not even running his own movie anymore. Cruise is still good in the film but the film feels like just one big chase sequence stretched out for no reason. Plenty of times Ethan could have been killed and would have been beneficial for the top bad guy to do so and could probably get him killed but they never do. Hunt just feels like a dude along for the ride going from place to place while being spoon fed information. The second character I had the biggest problem with is a newcomer and how they introduce her to the team. Without spoiling anything, she basically makes Hunt look like a fool the whole movie and makes Hunt look like a side charcter in his own movie. She's without a doubt the most annoying charcter in the film with tropes molded to create her charcter. She's a walking cliche for most of the film and gets out of scenarios she shouldn't. They even say she's not a spy the whole movie but can invade the spies at every turn. It's both a joke and sad that she is in the film (especially because the outcome of her charcter does something to another better charcter). Luckily the rest of the charcters on the main team are great here. The only other charcters that kind of suck are the two high generals. Felt like cliche trope "spy authority figures". The main villains aren't good but the actor does a fine enough job. No actor does a bad job for what they are given. Now to the most disappointing aspect being the stunts. The marketing for this film had "most dangerous" stunts but just never felt thay way. A lot of them are cool but are blown out of the water in comparison to the water scene from rogue Nation and almost all of the stunts from fallout. If they really were that dangerous, that's awesome, but it didn't translate to the screen. Felt a lot more bad green screen stunts more than the ones we got in rhe past two films. Not one stunt in this one was cooler than those other two films and that's a let down. Also, the action sequences didn't hit as hard as the bathroom scene in fallout or even the knife fight scene in RN. A lot of bad shaky cam and a lot of cuts. The story doesn't help here either. It's literally one big scavenger hunt with a side plot of also being one big chase sequence. Everyone knows where everyone is and everyone is there at the same time every signal scene. The main mcguffin isn't even explained to us in this film so we have no idea why the team is going after it. We just know if the villain gets it "it will be bad". Also, the reason the mcguffin gets into the real world is unknown and the motivation of why the mcguffin gets into the real world is a weird decision by the top bad guy. Seems like they hurt themselves by doing what they did in the beginning of the film. Overall, if this was a little disappointing I wouldn't have disliked at much but this is a really huge step back compared to the last movie which I loved. Every aspect of fallout is better and there's little hype I have for the next one if this is the direction they seem to want to go to. I need to see rogue Nation again, maybe this movie will make me appreciate that movie more. D- Expand

The plot is thin, illogical and almost irrelevant (yet somehow split across two movies). There's no character development at all, especially new female characters remain perfectly bland. What fills the movie instead are endless action scenes (one of the car chases alone must be 15 minutes) as well as never ending repetitions of the same pickpocketing gag - to the point where it feels like Groundhog Day. I found myself saying to myself, this is absurd... I no longer cared about what happened to these people because the action became ridiculous. Clearly, they just couldn't let go of some of the scenes because they cost so much to shoot. It just goes on and on and on with the same action. See on DVR or some other means where you can control the chase and fight scenes so you can fast forward. Do I want to see the first half again, absolutely; the second half, no. I have to remember this when part two comes out. Expand

The only character who seemed mildly sluggish was Cruise himself as Ethan, but the direction was more than competent, and the plot moved along even though nothing very original or interesting happened. Basically, it was the same old Ethan saves the world without the wit and cleverness of a James Bond film, where the producers are smart enough to find the best Bond available and provide more sophisticated plots – and characters. All the other actors gave lively and committed performances without stealing the spotlight from Cruise. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I genuinely don’t understand the early enthusiasm for this film, and I would largely consider myself a fan of the Mission Impossible series even the ones people find questionable like Mission Impossible 2. Moderate but not heavy specific spoilers ahead. The writing and narrative structure is really bizarre . The audience is given information well ahead of the long time protagonist, Ethan Hunt played by Tom Cruise. Therefore outside of the first 30 minutes of the film, there is no mystery for us as audience members. The overwhelming vast majority of the film Ethan is running around trying to find out information we as audience members are given in the first 15 minutes of the film. Then, there is new character of Grace who is present in the majority of the film. I was unable to connect with Grace, and was left scratching my head as to why the IMF was so loyal and willing to put their lives on the line for this thief who complicates their mission at every turn.

When Ethan Hunt is presented with a choice of saving Grace or a returning character, I wanted to shout at the screen for Hunt to save the returning character. If you sympathize and connect with Grace, you’ll probably enjoy this film much more than I did.

The primary antagonist lacks personality by design. Coming off the great performance of Henry Cavill as John Locke, I really struggled to get excited about defeating the faceless villain.

There’s also a new group of characters representing the American governments interest who constantly sabotage the IMF team, but Ethan Hunt is still dedicated to saving these characters. I left this film frustrated with Ethan Hunt as a character. If you’re just going for the action sequences and care very little for the narrative, characters, or structure, I didn’t find anything in this entry to be particularly memorable. This was by no means a terrible film, but it was dreadfully average and by no means a must see film even for fans of the Mission Impossible series. I’m left confused and feeling like the critics saw a different film than I did.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched this film a little bit ago and I have been thinking about it more and more. I am an extreme mission impossible fan and I am deeply disappointed. I want to preface this by saying that this is not a bad film. This movie was funny, it has a great score, and my goodness it is gorgeous. But there were so many things in this movie that just felt off to me and many of them I can not fully explain why. The writing and dialogue in this movie at times just felt a bit off to me. I just rewatched Fallout (mission impossible 6) and wow does that movies dialogue far exceed anything in this movie. In Fallout it feels snappy but in this movie it feels almost like a parody of it self. Every scene in fallout transitions so nicely from one action sequence to another only interjecting to press the story along when needed. And wow the action sequences in this film come nowhere near the last few films. There is nothing that puts you at the edge of your seat in this film, not a single moment. The train sequence was cool but it goes on for way too long, the cliff jump is cool but it lasts for like two seconds and it does not feel like it has any stakes. Driving through Rome was funny but it was not tense in the slightest. And my GOODNESS was there so much pickpocketing. Look at the Halo jump scene from Fallout, the music blaring in your ears and speeding up as you get closer to the ground, hunts frantic screams, the warning beforehand not to pull the parachute late otherwise you'll explode followed by Hunt pulling it at THE LAST POSSIBLE SECOND, the guiding system screaming in his ears to pull up, the constantly updating and ever decreasing elevation and THAT SHOT when he flips Walker over and it REVEALS HOW CLOSE THE GROUND IS. This all combines to become an amazingly tense sequence. There is nothing like this in the new film, no moments that made me feel like the Halo jump did. I may need to give it a rewatch, read some other reviews and maybe I will see the light but at the moment I just do not understand what people are watching. I am hoping that part two will justify what happened here in part one. Also Gabriel is just not scary nor threatening and the fight scenes are not that good. Oh I love Hayley Atwell though I thought she was wonderful. There are so many more things I want to write about but all in all its not a bad movie just a very disappointing one. Many people seem to be loving it. I just wish I was one of them. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MI series has been consistently evolving since its inception. However, this piece fails to show much improvement from the last installment. The characters are corny, and their intention is pretty geared toward the specific intentions of the filmmaker which hinders the character development. Some action scenes are rather long. I admire Mr. Cruise's action scenes but they drag on always ending at predictable outcomes. I am tending towards more of a negative review because it has failed to show much improvement in terms of story-line and cinematography rather than some new 'AI' villain which is hard to understand. Action set pieces was good. I particularly like the train scene. That one was really well done except the weird cut off transition that depleted the tension.

I do hope part 2 will answer a lot more question and make part 1 a better movie.

Alas, at least in my heart,I just know someone in the Paramount slate-planning division got/is getting fired over this, as there's no conceivable reason a franchise film of this quality should underperform this poorly at the box office. Alas, at least in my heart, Christopher McQuarrie's third crack at the "Mission Impossible" franchise is a total win for me, featuring some all-too-relevant thematics regarding the dangers of an ever-changing technopolitical landscape, as well as all the "S" tier action you've come to expect from this filmmaker's take on this legendary IP. This has also gotta be one of the best "part one" films I think I've ever seen. The narrative here, while an undeniable piece of a larger story, doesn't leave the audience feeling unrequited. To be sure, you'll definitely be left wanting more by the time the credits roll, but it's nowhere near as frustrating as — say— the endings of "Avengers: Infinity War" or "Fast X." In any event, I'm really hoping the recent comments from McQuarrie are true and that we may be in store for more of these after "Part Two." These movies are just so damn good and I don't want them to stop happening. Expand

However, it does seem to turn Ethan into a side character while elevating Grace, a female character who constantly outwits Ethan and makes him look like an idiot, and outdoes him for no reason other than achieving a higher ESG DEI score. It is explained in the film that she is just a glorified pickpocket, yet she pulls the wool over Ethan half a dozen times and Ethan inexplicably keeps coming back for more so much that it ***SPOILER*** gets an actual female who he should care about killed. If so much of the film weren't so impressive, this would destroy the film for me, entirely.

But, it also has a great concept for a plot that is executed well. I am interested to see what happens in the finale. It would have been better had this been only 1 film, but I am sure the budget ballooned so much due to Covid that a 2nd film was required to recoup costs. Another reason why it isn't rated higher.

This is an Ethan Hunt film. Don't make it about some nobody named Grace that makes Ethan turn into a moron. That definitely made people in my theater vocally groan at points. And don't put marginally funny Austin Powers car gags into a 15 minute chase seen that is already a little too long. And perfectly timed train parachutes are not appropriate for Mission Impossible. Stop trying to be a Marvel Movie with incessant jokes every 5 minutes.

Hey, Streamers!  It’s that time of year when Tom Cruise returns to theaters to save cinema.  Last year, he flew in with the fighter pilots in Top Gun: Maverick and brought people back to the theaters.  This year, Cruise brings back theHey, Streamers!  It’s that time of year when Tom Cruise returns to theaters to save cinema.  Last year, he flew in with the fighter pilots in Top Gun: Maverick and brought people back to the theaters.  This year, Cruise brings back the superspies with a new addition to the Mission: Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1.  He’s determined to up the ante on stunts and spectacle. Here’s whether this cliff-jumping action flick is worth the price of admission.

In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, as in every other M:I movie, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team accept an “impossible” mission to thwart an attempt by some evil entity to obtain an existentially dangerous weapon.  In this episode, that dangerous weapon is a mysterious, all-knowing AI called “the Entity.” In their quest to destroy the Entity, Ethan and his cohorts realize that successfully completing this mission may cost the lives of those closest to them. Mask-ripping, globe-hopping, and cliff-jumping, but no couch-jumping *wink* hijinks ensue.

Spoiler Alert: this movie is an absolute must-see on the big screen. Go grab your big box of popcorn and enjoy 2 and a half hours of superspy missions and increasingly insane stunts. Period.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system, my biggest qualm with this movie is the length. Although I was entertained throughout the entire runtime, I still can’t say that 2 and a half hours was absolutely necessary. There is one boring scene near the beginning where a bunch of side characters discuss the terrifying abilities of the AI.  This scene needs to be edited down. There is another scene later in the movie where Ethan, Luther (Ving Rhames) and Benji (Simon Pegg) explain the IMF to the new addition to the crew, Grace (Hayley Atwell), which is tedious but ultimately necessary. Nevertheless, the momentum of the movie doesn't grinds to a halt such that you’d be checking your watch.

My other minor issues are 1.) the character Hayley Atwell plays does things that make no sense. I like her as a new player in the M:I game, but she’s very frustrating throughout; 2.) the “plot” of M:I movies are so generic. Literally, every episode is the same. Formula = x villain is trying to get y weapon to destroy or take over z + Ethan and crew go all over the world to stop it. Luckily, Christopher McQuarrie, who directed this one, Fallout and Rogue Nation, and Tom Cruise have figured out practical, high-wire stunts that inject energy into each sequel. They have to exceed what they’ve done before, and they’ve succeeded in making a very entertaining action thriller. There are truly awe-inspiring stunts and spectacles done in Dead Reckoning that justify its existence as the seventh film in this 27 year old franchise.

Side Note: at one point, I was literally digging my fingernails into the armrests. Talk about thrilling!

Bela continuação, matendo alto nível da franquia, Tom Cruise continua sendo carismático ao quadrado, único problema fica por alguns momentos o filme ser esticado desnecessariamente pelo fator parte 1, mas ainda um ótimo filme de ação

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved it. The best illumination and music in the franchise (by using the leitmotifs perfectly) and some of the most memorable scenes in action films.

Both the Venecia and the train part are amazing.

It fits right into the mold of an overly choreographed film, particularly with the dialogue, and the story, outside of the broad strokes “they are trying to save the world” is simply a mind bend. Really had no idea about what was going on in the narrative layers beneath the top line.

All that aside, it was still a fun watch, entertaining, Cruise is better now than in other MIs as far as I can compare from memory, and Hayley Atwell and Rebecca Ferguson were stunningly beautiful which was worth a couple points. Hayley's character was insufferable for a good bit for how she kept mistreating Cruise, though that's more on the writing for making Cruise out to be the worst of the worst white knights in their interactions. But she still had a good redemption and her character was very feminine which was a positive.

Pom Klementieff's character was psychotic.

All in all The movie was really entertaining, definitely worth the watch. The score is probably moreso in between a 7 or an 8 to be a toss up, but an 8 is fair enough, especially when watched in theaters.

While the complex plot may occasionally lose its footing, the breathtaking action and captivating performances more than make up for it. Fans of the series will be eagerly waiting for the next installment to complete the mission.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Solid action movie. Takes a bit too long to get going with lots and lots of exposition in the beginning. Some of the stunts that were done practical get demoted by cgi fx (they built a real train and crashed it off of a cliff but the landing looks cgi heavy).
Also there are a few plotholes concerning the ai-entity. It is presented as this omnipotent hacker, that can hack everything and even emulate voices. The solution to that is "analog radio because it is not digital and this not hackable", but i mean.. radio stations also send digital output via analog radio? Later there is a scene where Simon Peggs character uses the autopilot of his car.. which somehow is immune to getting hacked all of a sudden? Besides that it was an entertaining 150 minutes which could (should?) Have been 90-110 minutes at most. Still looking forward to part 2. Hopefully it can reach the heights that mi:6-fallout brought us

Favorite characters return and new ones are introduced. Ethan Hunt never has the ego of a Bond or Bourne; he's always barely hanging on against impossible odds, which makes him more relatable. The technology sometimes borders on sci fi, but that is easy to dismiss if you show up ready to be entertained. Expand

But coming to story side it was pretty normal story line not as expected .From start of the story it was normal it can be Good. The Director only focused on the action scenes and to improve the action and thrills of audience than older parts .But Really the action scenes are mind blowing compare to older MI movies. No doubt direction was good as other Mission Impossible series .Lets see what happens in part two..Overall great Movie must watch.

Not enough adrenaline to swim the air like Tom did. But, after the end of the film, we realize that the adrenaline is enough, but the bravery we must measure it now

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tom Cruise reprises his role as Ethan Hunt, the enigmatic and resourceful IMF agent, with the same level of commitment and charisma that has come to define the character. The film propels audiences into a web of intrigue and danger as Hunt and his team navigate a labyrinthine narrative involving rogue agents, international espionage, and a potential global threat.
In conclusion, "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" is a testament to the franchise's ability to reinvent itself while staying true to its core elements. With Tom Cruise's magnetic presence, breathtaking action sequences, and a narrative that keeps audiences guessing, the film stands as a commendable addition to the series. As the plot barrels forward, leaving audiences eagerly anticipating the next installment, it reaffirms the enduring appeal of the "Mission: Impossible" franchise as a staple of espionage cinema that shows no signs of slowing down.
