Good movie. I hate how everything is becoming part 1s and part 2s. It's not enough to get me to boycott but it's truly irksome.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tom Cruise reprises his role as Ethan Hunt, the enigmatic and resourceful IMF agent, with the same level of commitment and charisma that has come to define the character. The film propels audiences into a web of intrigue and danger as Hunt and his team navigate a labyrinthine narrative involving rogue agents, international espionage, and a potential global threat.
In conclusion, "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" is a testament to the franchise's ability to reinvent itself while staying true to its core elements. With Tom Cruise's magnetic presence, breathtaking action sequences, and a narrative that keeps audiences guessing, the film stands as a commendable addition to the series. As the plot barrels forward, leaving audiences eagerly anticipating the next installment, it reaffirms the enduring appeal of the "Mission: Impossible" franchise as a staple of espionage cinema that shows no signs of slowing down.

Alas, at least in my heart,I just know someone in the Paramount slate-planning division got/is getting fired over this, as there's no conceivable reason a franchise film of this quality should underperform this poorly at the box office. Alas, at least in my heart, Christopher McQuarrie's third crack at the "Mission Impossible" franchise is a total win for me, featuring some all-too-relevant thematics regarding the dangers of an ever-changing technopolitical landscape, as well as all the "S" tier action you've come to expect from this filmmaker's take on this legendary IP. This has also gotta be one of the best "part one" films I think I've ever seen. The narrative here, while an undeniable piece of a larger story, doesn't leave the audience feeling unrequited. To be sure, you'll definitely be left wanting more by the time the credits roll, but it's nowhere near as frustrating as — say— the endings of "Avengers: Infinity War" or "Fast X." In any event, I'm really hoping the recent comments from McQuarrie are true and that we may be in store for more of these after "Part Two." These movies are just so damn good and I don't want them to stop happening. Expand

It fits right into the mold of an overly choreographed film, particularly with the dialogue, and the story, outside of the broad strokes “they are trying to save the world” is simply a mind bend. Really had no idea about what was going on in the narrative layers beneath the top line.

All that aside, it was still a fun watch, entertaining, Cruise is better now than in other MIs as far as I can compare from memory, and Hayley Atwell and Rebecca Ferguson were stunningly beautiful which was worth a couple points. Hayley's character was insufferable for a good bit for how she kept mistreating Cruise, though that's more on the writing for making Cruise out to be the worst of the worst white knights in their interactions. But she still had a good redemption and her character was very feminine which was a positive.

Pom Klementieff's character was psychotic.

All in all The movie was really entertaining, definitely worth the watch. The score is probably moreso in between a 7 or an 8 to be a toss up, but an 8 is fair enough, especially when watched in theaters.

However, it does seem to turn Ethan into a side character while elevating Grace, a female character who constantly outwits Ethan and makes him look like an idiot, and outdoes him for no reason other than achieving a higher ESG DEI score. It is explained in the film that she is just a glorified pickpocket, yet she pulls the wool over Ethan half a dozen times and Ethan inexplicably keeps coming back for more so much that it ***SPOILER*** gets an actual female who he should care about killed. If so much of the film weren't so impressive, this would destroy the film for me, entirely.

But, it also has a great concept for a plot that is executed well. I am interested to see what happens in the finale. It would have been better had this been only 1 film, but I am sure the budget ballooned so much due to Covid that a 2nd film was required to recoup costs. Another reason why it isn't rated higher.

This is an Ethan Hunt film. Don't make it about some nobody named Grace that makes Ethan turn into a moron. That definitely made people in my theater vocally groan at points. And don't put marginally funny Austin Powers car gags into a 15 minute chase seen that is already a little too long. And perfectly timed train parachutes are not appropriate for Mission Impossible. Stop trying to be a Marvel Movie with incessant jokes every 5 minutes.

The only character who seemed mildly sluggish was Cruise himself as Ethan, but the direction was more than competent, and the plot moved along even though nothing very original or interesting happened. Basically, it was the same old Ethan saves the world without the wit and cleverness of a James Bond film, where the producers are smart enough to find the best Bond available and provide more sophisticated plots – and characters. All the other actors gave lively and committed performances without stealing the spotlight from Cruise. Expand

The consistency here is impressive, I'd say. Since MI 3, there was not a bad movie in this franchise.

Tom Cruise is amazing. His team does a good job also. Hayley is a good casting, fortunately, cuz replacing Rebecca is not easy.

I loved the action scenes. The fact that Ethan is not Superman, needs his team and creativity to survive makes everything more interesting. The environment is a crucial part of that and they didn't miss it here. Another differential is the commitment to making the scenes believable by "simply" doing them, like Tom jumping from a cliff for real. That was amazing and remember me Jackie Chan.

Anyway, I surely recommend it.

It's amazing how this franchise is like wine, almost always improving with each film. The only exception is the second film, which is no better than the first. But from the third it's just uphill.

Despite having spent a large part of his career as a screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie shows that he definitely has plenty of talent in directing his films, in addition to having very original ideas to make a franchise reach its eighth film still having breath and still being interesting.

When an artificial intelligence threatens the World, Ethan Hunt and his team return to the field.

At this point it’s hard to argue that Mission Impossible isn’t the most reliable movie franchise in the history of cinema and Dead Reckoning Part 1, the first part of the final two movies in the series, delivers exactly what you’d expect. The plot is as baffling as ever, with a little too much exposition, but the partnership of Cruise and the lovely Hayley Atwell is great fun and the action scenes are just incredible (especially when you know Cruise actually did the vast majority of it for real). This is definitely one of those movies you have to see in the cinema.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A solid 8.

This is a superb example of enjoyable and entertaining techno-cringe in an action film. Does the tech and science check out? Not really. Did the techno mumbo-jumbo make me chuckle? Yes. Was it entertaining? Heck yes!

It's surreal how real and tangible everything in this movie looked compared to other recent action-focused films. This wasn't shot at a sound stage with greenscreen, and it really shows. The only shots that came across as artificial were the underwater CGI-shots of the submarine.
No uncanny-valley with 3D-modeled characters doing the stunts in a rendered environment, but actual old-school stuntwork in a built set or actual environment. How refreshing!

What brought it down for me was the length and distracting/repetitive music (not main theme) during chase & action scenes.

The part with best sound design was the jaw-dropping stunt-jump with a motorcycle. When the music stopped and gave the scene some air, it made it more impactfull. Wish the Venice chase & fight -scenes had toned down on the music as well.

There's a lot of long shots of characters' faces reacting and contemplating, and that got a bit boring halfway through and maybe should've been trimmed down. It happening so often slowed the pace a bit too much and some scenes lost momentum as a result.

There was one joke/gag that didn't land on the audience I watched this with, otherwise it was a very lively theater. The joke in question was with the yellow Ford, where Ethan is trying frantically to explain the car choise. The whole theater was silent and it felt awkward. Perhaps the joke would've landed better if I was watching this at home.

Bonus points for actually well-written female characters! They had their own motives and agendas, made both good and bad calls, and their awesomeness wasn't artificially elevated by diminishing surrounding male characters - so no Mary Sues. They each shone on their own merits as women without ditching feminine characteristics for masculinity. Traditionally feminine traits are a strength too, and this handled it beautifully. Truly a rarity these days.

What a year, when best-written female characters in cinema can be found in a film marketed to a mostly male audience, in a genre that has long history of objectifying women in the past. How the times have changed.

Hey, Streamers!  It’s that time of year when Tom Cruise returns to theaters to save cinema.  Last year, he flew in with the fighter pilots in Top Gun: Maverick and brought people back to the theaters.  This year, Cruise brings back theHey, Streamers!  It’s that time of year when Tom Cruise returns to theaters to save cinema.  Last year, he flew in with the fighter pilots in Top Gun: Maverick and brought people back to the theaters.  This year, Cruise brings back the superspies with a new addition to the Mission: Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1.  He’s determined to up the ante on stunts and spectacle. Here’s whether this cliff-jumping action flick is worth the price of admission.

In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, as in every other M:I movie, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team accept an “impossible” mission to thwart an attempt by some evil entity to obtain an existentially dangerous weapon.  In this episode, that dangerous weapon is a mysterious, all-knowing AI called “the Entity.” In their quest to destroy the Entity, Ethan and his cohorts realize that successfully completing this mission may cost the lives of those closest to them. Mask-ripping, globe-hopping, and cliff-jumping, but no couch-jumping *wink* hijinks ensue.

Spoiler Alert: this movie is an absolute must-see on the big screen. Go grab your big box of popcorn and enjoy 2 and a half hours of superspy missions and increasingly insane stunts. Period.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system, my biggest qualm with this movie is the length. Although I was entertained throughout the entire runtime, I still can’t say that 2 and a half hours was absolutely necessary. There is one boring scene near the beginning where a bunch of side characters discuss the terrifying abilities of the AI.  This scene needs to be edited down. There is another scene later in the movie where Ethan, Luther (Ving Rhames) and Benji (Simon Pegg) explain the IMF to the new addition to the crew, Grace (Hayley Atwell), which is tedious but ultimately necessary. Nevertheless, the momentum of the movie doesn't grinds to a halt such that you’d be checking your watch.

My other minor issues are 1.) the character Hayley Atwell plays does things that make no sense. I like her as a new player in the M:I game, but she’s very frustrating throughout; 2.) the “plot” of M:I movies are so generic. Literally, every episode is the same. Formula = x villain is trying to get y weapon to destroy or take over z + Ethan and crew go all over the world to stop it. Luckily, Christopher McQuarrie, who directed this one, Fallout and Rogue Nation, and Tom Cruise have figured out practical, high-wire stunts that inject energy into each sequel. They have to exceed what they’ve done before, and they’ve succeeded in making a very entertaining action thriller. There are truly awe-inspiring stunts and spectacles done in Dead Reckoning that justify its existence as the seventh film in this 27 year old franchise.

Side Note: at one point, I was literally digging my fingernails into the armrests. Talk about thrilling!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Solid action movie. Takes a bit too long to get going with lots and lots of exposition in the beginning. Some of the stunts that were done practical get demoted by cgi fx (they built a real train and crashed it off of a cliff but the landing looks cgi heavy).
Also there are a few plotholes concerning the ai-entity. It is presented as this omnipotent hacker, that can hack everything and even emulate voices. The solution to that is "analog radio because it is not digital and this not hackable", but i mean.. radio stations also send digital output via analog radio? Later there is a scene where Simon Peggs character uses the autopilot of his car.. which somehow is immune to getting hacked all of a sudden? Besides that it was an entertaining 150 minutes which could (should?) Have been 90-110 minutes at most. Still looking forward to part 2. Hopefully it can reach the heights that mi:6-fallout brought us

In watching this installment, which will unfold over two parts, I get the sense that Tom Cruise is about to pass the torch to a different actor for a continuation/reboot of the Franchise, or the Mission Impossible Series of Movies is about to be ended. The movie addresses the threat of AI (Artificial Intelligence), and may seem timely, with all the recent warnings from those who should know. I would say, though, it is a bit late to the party because movies like I-Robot (2004), Eagle Eye (2008), Ex Machina (2014), and even the animated movie Wall-E (2008) have sounded warnings about AI before now. That said, the plot revolves around a convoluted global conspiracy with digital dimensions, involving the earlier referenced AI, which threatens mankind. Hayley Atwell is a refreshing addition to the cast, as a continent-hopping thief of international disrepute, caught up in the conspiracy. The movie has some comedic scenes aside from those you would expect from Simon Pegg’s character. The Train scenes at the end you will thoroughly enjoy. This is a movie worth watching, every minute of it. Expand

Action set pieces was good. I particularly like the train scene. That one was really well done except the weird cut off transition that depleted the tension.

I do hope part 2 will answer a lot more question and make part 1 a better movie.

Tom Cruise’s next project should be producing a good Uncharted movie as well.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just watched it today, and i really enjoyed it. Even at close to 3 hours, it is very well paced. It seemed to go by very quickly. All the action scenes were amazing, including the car chase scene and the train scene near the end. It has an amazing stunt that sees Cruise drive a motorbike off a mountain. Unfortunately i can't give it a 10 as i have to take a point off for some plot points. I find it very hard to believe that the most super, advanced AI system in the world can be controlled by two keys put together. Also, the AI could have easily killed the entire team at any time but for some reason doesnt?

If you are looking for a really enjoyable movie to see at the cinema, i highly reccommend MI 7.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched this film a little bit ago and I have been thinking about it more and more. I am an extreme mission impossible fan and I am deeply disappointed. I want to preface this by saying that this is not a bad film. This movie was funny, it has a great score, and my goodness it is gorgeous. But there were so many things in this movie that just felt off to me and many of them I can not fully explain why. The writing and dialogue in this movie at times just felt a bit off to me. I just rewatched Fallout (mission impossible 6) and wow does that movies dialogue far exceed anything in this movie. In Fallout it feels snappy but in this movie it feels almost like a parody of it self. Every scene in fallout transitions so nicely from one action sequence to another only interjecting to press the story along when needed. And wow the action sequences in this film come nowhere near the last few films. There is nothing that puts you at the edge of your seat in this film, not a single moment. The train sequence was cool but it goes on for way too long, the cliff jump is cool but it lasts for like two seconds and it does not feel like it has any stakes. Driving through Rome was funny but it was not tense in the slightest. And my GOODNESS was there so much pickpocketing. Look at the Halo jump scene from Fallout, the music blaring in your ears and speeding up as you get closer to the ground, hunts frantic screams, the warning beforehand not to pull the parachute late otherwise you'll explode followed by Hunt pulling it at THE LAST POSSIBLE SECOND, the guiding system screaming in his ears to pull up, the constantly updating and ever decreasing elevation and THAT SHOT when he flips Walker over and it REVEALS HOW CLOSE THE GROUND IS. This all combines to become an amazingly tense sequence. There is nothing like this in the new film, no moments that made me feel like the Halo jump did. I may need to give it a rewatch, read some other reviews and maybe I will see the light but at the moment I just do not understand what people are watching. I am hoping that part two will justify what happened here in part one. Also Gabriel is just not scary nor threatening and the fight scenes are not that good. Oh I love Hayley Atwell though I thought she was wonderful. There are so many more things I want to write about but all in all its not a bad movie just a very disappointing one. Many people seem to be loving it. I just wish I was one of them. Expand

PastIn this latest outing in the long running spy franchise, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his crew find themselves up against an omnipresent artificial intelligence that threatens the lives of not just him and his team, but the whole world. Past and familiar faces also get involved and complicate things further as he tries to race to stop this global evil by any means necessary. First off, seeing how this film was going to be split into two parts, I was a bit skeptical at how much of a cliffhanger this one would have, and if it's ending would either frustrate or satisfy me. Surprisingly, this film feels the most like its own part moreso than most part ones out there for other films and franchises. It ends in a relatively satisfying spot while still leaving me eager enough to see what happens in the next part. Storywise, this thing is ALL over the place, and the same goes for all the characters too. This film feels over stuff to a fall and so many senses. The story twists and turns faster than I could ever keep track of, and there are simply far too many characters and motives to keep track of. Performance-wise, Cruise does what he does best, and definitely doesn't disappoint with all the jaw-dropping stunts that he pulls off in this. His performance itself also feels grounded, gritty, and raw, more than ever in this franchise. Other familiar standouts include Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg. Rebecca Ferguson and Vanessa Kirby also return from some of the franchise's previous entries. The only standout here that I absolutely did not like was Hayley Atwell, who's character was utterly frustrating and useless the entire film. All she did was three things: pickpocket, run away, and play damsel in distress. Overall, not exactly memorable in terms of story, especially when it was as messy and all over the place as this one was, and there's little to no character development, given how over stuffed it was. However, it also showed that Cruise definitely has no intention of slowing down anytime soon despite his age and how long he's been doing this for, and you gotta give the man props for that! It's definitely fun enough while it lasts, but doesn't rank among the best in the franchise. Expand

Tom Cruise did it again. First he showed how a sequel is actually done in Top Gun: Maverick and now with Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning he did it again.

The movie is definitely a must see, and you'll regret not seeing it.

Ethan Hunt is back and he's showing that he still has it, but also that with age came wisdom. This is a more mature Ethan, but one still more than fit to deal with realistic waves of adversaries. Cruise shows that he's still at his A game and that he has no problem adapting to what should be the age of his character.
That's where Hayley Atwell and her character Grace enters. She knows what Ethan doesn't know and as the set of skills fit for her character, reluctantly but eventually perfectly sharing the spotlight with Ethan. The two characters act and react to each other as two real people put in that situation would.
Grace never once tries to steal the spotlight from Ethan, and Ethan gives her due credit seeing neither character knows everything or how to do anything.

The rest of team also have their place to shine, although unfortunately we don't get enough from them as perhaps we should have. With Benji and Luther being characters that have more to offer.

That's actually where the movie fails. The main villain actually does what that kind of villain should be able to do, and see coming. Those trying to reach that villain have very good reasons to do so. However certain scenes last longer than they should where characters are explaining things that are self-explanatory. The movie could've cut more or less 10 minutes and it would've still have done everything necessary.
Also some of jokes either don't land well or they miss their mark completely.

Nothing that really disrupts the movie in any significant way, or that cuts the build-up.
The movie has the right twists and surprises that you won't see coming, but it's not a perfect story. Seeing two specific items that could've become permanently lost at the beginning of the movie, they just so happen to not become lost so the chase can begin.

Although not a perfect story it's still a very good story, with mostly the right pacing and the necessary characters as well as scenes to make it very enjoyable.
Easily kept me entertained from beginning to end. With a mostly solid story and all the right characters.
The mission of making a great sequel and a great movie is executed with very much success. Something we can't say about a lot of movies nowadays.
Miss it and you'll lose something special.

In all previous installments, Tom Cruise has elevated the level of this series’With Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One being the seventh entry in the franchise, you’d think the bar would be impossible to raise this time around. In all previous installments, Tom Cruise has elevated the level of this series’ craft countless times–in terms of action, personal stakes, and jaw-dropping stunt-making. And he did it again. This time around, Ethan Hunt and his crew find themselves in a deadly race between world governments, and AI-controlled thugs. The goal? To destroy the mentioned AI and stop it from swaying the balance of the modern world.

Just like Thanos tried balancing the universe, Mission Impossible does so with the Hollywood micro cosmos in a way. In times filled with mediocre action and superhero productions like The Flash or Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania–which toy around with the not-so-new idea of the multiverse and numerous cheap easter eggs–Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie bet on the same odds, which are the winning ones once again.

Action cinema fans might feel like they know what they’re going to see when going to watch Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. And to some extent they’re right. Characters engage in suspenseful, action-packed sequences in renowned areas around the world and some incredible (and given Cruise does most of them himself, quite impossible you could say) stunts. Still, the detail in which these have been made are ground-breaking. Even though it feels like there are few new heights to be reached in terms of action sequences, especially with the John Wick franchise doing such a spectacular job in this area as well, Mission Impossible still delivers. The breaking point has been the levels of tension and buildup Hunt and other characters have been able to achieve in Dead Reckoning Part One. While John Wick excels in what feels like never-ending fights, Mission Impossible has found a way to introduce multiple layers of intrigue and plot twists simultaneously into single acts of each movie, especially in this one. Dead Reckoning Part One is packed and focused on these intrigues and how they interact with each other. With such a stellar range of talented actors, many would expect the plot and purpose of each one to be too much, and to simply fail to interact with each other. Luckily, that’s not the case here, and it’s an admirable achievement on its own.

The movie is essentially two and a half hours long and is mostly composed of such moments, which then burst out into dynamic interactions, brawls, and beautifully shot stunts. There are some moments to breathe, but they’re short, and feel like intersections between one rollercoaster and another in a theme park, rather than full-time lunch breaks.

Nevertheless, it doesn’t get boring, especially with additions of fresh characters such as Hayley’s Atwell’s Grace or the return of old ones like Vanessa Kirby’s White Widow. Surely there are a bunch of nitpicks anyone could’ve done. But, ultimately, when Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One finishes, you don’t feel exhausted. You know it’s been a hell of a ride, worth every second and penny.

The movie does have a proper ending rather than just being left as an open book before Part Two arrives next year. Nowadays, two-part stories struggle with that in cinema, so it’s nice to see an exception.

With all their heart Cruise, McQuarrie, and the rest of the crew put into making this masterpiece, it’s tough not to admire it. They’ve made Mission Impossible franchise an epitome of action cinema, and Dead Reckoning - Part One feels like the best entry in the franchise so far.

Although Mission Impossible might have a perfect formula for success, it’d be a shame if Dead Reckoning Part Two won’t be the end of the series or at least a sendoff to the current characters. It would be hard to watch the franchise lose its steam and become another cheap money-printing machine. And, last but not least, I believe we can all agree Hunt and Cruise finally deserve some well-earned retirement after entertaining us for 27 years. That is, naturally, if they’re given a happy ending, which they deserve.

More espionage, deception, stunts, car chases, and lots and lots of running. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One delivers the full suite of spy movie tropes and yes that does mean the Scooby-Doo masks are back in force again. It wouldn’t be a Mission: Impossible movie without someone pulling their face off at some point.

Open with an evil Russian submarine, in a scene that felt like War Games on steroids and it’s time for rogue man Ethan Hunt and the IMF team to embark upon yet another impossible mission. This time they must track down a new weapon that threatens all of humanity before the bad guys get it first. This mysterious enemy is unlike anything they’ve ever seen before and soon the fate of the entire world is at stake. So you know, the usual stuff. Look we’re not here for the plot but this one definitely felt topical. We’re here to see people fight and run and fly and boy do we get it all and more. 2023 has certainly been a great year for the stunt departments, what with John Wick throwing half the stunt team down endless steps and now Mission: Impossible doing their very best to fling Tom Cruise off mountains, trains, rooftops, and whatever other surface a person shouldn’t be running on you can bet he’ll find a way. We’ve seen jaw dropping stunts in the previous movies from hanging onto the side of a plane, climbing buildings and a halo jump. The planning and dedication that comes to upping the stakes again and again is what will get the fans into the cinemas. This is proper filmmaking and it will always be superior to whatever new technology that threatens to replace it. Because that bike stunt (see poster) is absolutely incredible and it’s these carefully planned and seemingly impossible stunts that need to be seen to be believed.

Dead Reckoning is clearly made by people who understand what cinema audiences want, it delivers exactly what it advertises and further reminds us that this is a franchise that is not going away any time soon. It continually finds new and exciting ways to keep fans captivated, Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie bring us through an exhilarating thrill ride that moves from set piece to set piece without feeling rushed or overly long. Because at 2 hours 45 minutes I barely felt the time pass. Also as it’s part one of two it’s unclear whether splitting it in two was the right decision, with few exceptions generally splitting one story into multiple parts results in upsetting the story arc. But there’s enough packed into Dead Reckoning and although it may not be quite as good as M:I – Fallout, it’s very close. While the villain in the latest installment doesn’t quite live up to Sean Harris or Henry Cavill it’s Pom Klementieff as Paris who stole the show in Dead Reckoning. Her onscreen presence was something else, and with barely any dialogue she gave a menacing performance and almost felt like she was out of a completely different film. The women in the last few Mission: Impossible and James Bond movies don’t just show up and look pretty, they kick ass too and Klementieff was probably one of the most memorable characters in these action/spy movies.

Each time I see another one of these movies I can’t help but think they might actually be trying to kill Tom Cruise. The man doesn’t stop, he might not be much of an actor but he’s the best action man making movies right now. And they’re movies made to be seen on the big screen, because if there’s one thing you can count on a Mission: Impossible movie, it’s pure adrenaline fuelled entertainment. I loved it and it’s essential viewing for the fans of the franchise. And if I haven’t convinced you to see it, rest assured the Mission Impossible movies also have universal appeal, you can hop in at any one of them and you’ll be fine. So sit back and enjoy Dead Reckoning Part One which will leave you wanting more and more.

Ethan Hunt is called upon to recover two mysterious keys connected precisely to this mysterious AI and the mission takes him to the deserts of Saudi Arabia, to Rome, Venice and the Alps. With a production budget of $290 million, it is the most expensive film of the series and also one of the most expensive in the history of cinema.
The film sees once again Tom Cruise in the role of the timeless Ethan Hunt; Christopher McQuarrie (Academy Award-winning screenplay for “The Usual Suspects”) as director and screenwriter; but we also find Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby and Henry Czerny. While among the new entries Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham.
This episode is like a dizzying ride, a constant escape, a race against time.
The cinematography captures exceptional landscapes and fast-paced urban scenes, the detailed sets and the use of well-crafted effects and CGI are blended flawlessly, creating a visually immersive experience that enhances the storytelling.
The effective direction works and gives its best in every sequence, especially in the more action ones (the chases are memorable - including those in the streets of Rome - which characterize the main segments of the film) and in the final tense with the train. Perhaps some scenes suffer from the "already seen" effect, perhaps they lack more original ideas, better management of twists and greater exploration of certain narrative or thematic details, but these alleged shortcomings are counterbalanced by Ethan's more reflective and intimate side (which emerges like never before in this farewell journey to the saga) and by the melancholic dynamics of his group of friends.
The screenplay alternates and knows how to balance intrigue, suspense and humour; while the staging, with a fast pace, is very spectacular. Tom Cruise sews the film on himself (more and more breathtaking, dangerous and crazy his stunts: here Tom Cruise's jump with the motorcycle from the top of a mountain).
Very relevant in this work is the central and problematic topic of modern technology (and its use), as well as an increasingly unpredictable development of digital and Artificial Intelligence.
This theme is closely linked to current events, and which allows the work to mainly explore the ethical implications and possible consequences of AI in the world of espionage (but not only).
The script, albeit superficially, raises questions about morality, autonomy and the ever-changing role of technology in the field of global security; but also interesting food for thought on a humanity that has the responsibility of fighting against a digital technology that has developed too much and that can only be stopped by opposing it with the logic of analog and ethics.
In short, the seventh chapter of the series, between its strengths and weaknesses, and between repeated twists and adrenaline-pumping action sequences, continues to give emotions.
A very enjoyable and compelling film in itself, which, apart from a few flaws and signs of tiredness, is confirmed overall as one of the most successful episodes of the saga. Waiting for the second part which will be the last chapter starring Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt…

And they pretty much succeed! And the McGuffin/danger in this case is actually something that people worry about — AI taking over the world, which in the case of Cruise is a metaphor for CGI replacing practical stunts and streaming replacing cinema. How much longer can he do it? At least one more movie, it seems! Expand

Without resorting to hyperbole - this movie is freaking amazing. It's the kind of 2.5hr plus movie that doesn't feel that long at all, engaging the audience with incredible action sequences, subtle yet impactful character moments, and all-round excellent performances by all.

As noted above, I hadn't kept track of the most recent MI films so wasn't attuned to the comradery and friendship that developed between Ethan, Luther, Benji and Isla. Dead Reckoning allows the cast to shine in their roles and their chemistry is wonderful to watch.

Grace, the newest member of the team, is well-written and perfectly cast as a skilled international thief, but is completely out of her depth when her life - and the fate of the world - is on the line. Her growth is natural and cathartic and the audience is rooting for her to succeed.

Tom Cruise truly is one of the few action hero superstars of our time. In the last couple of years, he has helmed two of the most entertaining blockbusters audiences have seen in a very, very long time. Both films take legacy characters and build upon them, upping the stakes and allowing our hero to make choices consistent with their character and arc. And with both critical acclaim and smashing the box office, maybe the film industry could take some notes from Mr. Cruise.

It goes without saying the stunt work, location filming, and grand scale of this film is breathtaking. There are some pacing issues and awkward leans into comedy, but overall, Dead Reckoning is the exhilarating tension-filled ride we've all been aching for and a welcome departure from the rushed CGI worlds we've endured in recent times.

Although it's a two-parter, the film has its own ending, and sets up perfectly for the next one.

And I can't wait.

The previous entry, Mission Impossible Fallout, might be one of the best action movies ever made. Of course, I was massively hyped for the next entry but I had a slight worry when I heard it was going to split into parts. Does the Mission Impossible franchise continue to cruise upwards or this time a mission failure?

Let's start with the reason that many watch this franchise, the action and stunts. Tom Cruise continues to be one of the few proper action stars as he does dangerous stunts for our entertainment. This entry is no exception as he rides a motorbike off a cliff, speed gliding and does a fight sequence on a train reminiscent of the first film. Tom doing it for real, makes the sequence feel more real and it certainly shows in the way these scenes are shot. In terms of action set pieces, the airport scene is incredibly tense with how many groups trying to mess or hunt the IMF. The Rome car chase is a thrilling 20 minutes of pure adrenaline and comedic joy. The 3rd act with the train is an awesome, stellar and gripping delight to watch. Lorne Balfe returns from Mission Impossible Fallout to do the score for the film and he delivers yet again. His score makes every action scene more impactful and the emotional stuff hit harder. All the returning actors continue to give great performances but the new character Grace played by Hayley Atwell is a highlight. I appreciate that she isn't an agent like Ilsa Faust. She is an amazing thief that adds a bit of chaos to everything while not being truly loyal to the hero or villain's cause. Grace is not accustomed to the shenanigans of the IMF so she adds an interesting POV to what is going on in the plot. There is also great chemistry between Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell which makes their scenes together really enjoyable. Henry Czerny returns as Kittridge from the first Mission Impossible and he is still great as he was 27 years ago. The weird rivalry and antagonism between his character and Ethan are fun to watch. There is a big MacGuffin in the plot called "The Entity" which is A.I. and this is so different for Mission Impossible which has it be a bomb or virus. The Entity is quite scary because it is very fitting for the time we currently live in and feels quite possible in real life. The Entity feels like the real villain.

The human villains, Gabriel and Paris are sadly quite disappointing. It was great to have villains that aren't agents going evil or arms dealers like in past films. Gabriel even has a connection to Ethan's past which makes him a more personal villain. Unfortunately, they aren't explored much whatsoever and Gabriel himself doesn't become truly involved until over halfway through the film. Paris feels like a James Bond henchman and Gabriel ends up feeling like a person for Ethan to punch rather than a compelling antagonist. The stunts and action are great but they are a little underwhelming when compared to how amazing the stunts were in Mission Impossible Fallout. It seems Fallout set the bar so high that it was too tough to top it. The script is also a bit weak. There are so many times when the dialogue is just characters mentioning "The Key" all the time. I wish they cut back on this repetition or rephrased some of the dialogue. I also think the intro scene is dumb for reasons I won't state but it really shouldn't have been in the movie. On that note, this being a part 1 does result in a non-complete story. The ending is not as painful as Dune or Spiderverse where it felt like it ended midway through a story. Here, the end feels conclusive for the most part and leaves you at least partially satisfied. It is just clear that many lingering plot threads weren't settled. I am not a big fan of splitting movies into parts so I hope this is not a trend we bring back. Overall, it is genuinely crazy how the Mission Impossible franchise is still this great 7 movies in. Compared to other long-running franchises, this one still managed to keep me excited for more. I am incredibly hyped for part 2 and can't wait to see Tom Cruise's iconic run again!
