One of those movies that Michael Mann's filmography simply didn't need. A remake of the TV series that feels an other movie full of realistic action but that just says nothing new and add nothing to action crimes.

Not Michael Mann's best film by a long way but still has his characteristic stylishness and cool music.

There is never been a movie that I didn't like in many years probably because they got bad reviews and I'm probably one of those people and sometimes I'm not and that is why Miami Vice is the one that interests me and got me bored to deathThere is never been a movie that I didn't like in many years probably because they got bad reviews and I'm probably one of those people and sometimes I'm not and that is why Miami Vice is the one that interests me and got me bored to death already. The film by Michael Mann is based on the TV series starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas and I haven't seen the show by yet but I am planning to. Heard about it has some kick-ass tunes. Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx are both Sonny Crockett and Rico Tubbs but they don't have the charisma to the characters like the original show has. They're boring as hell. I really don't have the treatment as I did with the other films by Michael Mann. Even the cinematography is not as good as I expected. I keep expecting to hear a Godley & Creme song at the end of this movie. I did not enjoy Miami Vice, didn't like it, didn't enjoy it, planning on watching the TV series which is based on, you make me wanna yawn. Expand

I don't know what to rate a movie that I can't even stand watching. Miami Vice was just dull, darkly lit with a lot going on without explanation. Maybe that's how the show was, but this was a struggle.

The film is gorgeously shot as anticipated because Michael Mann knows how to make some stylish thrillers and this one is no exception. In addition, Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx both do quite well in the lead roles and really have great chemistry as a duo. As with all actiony type films, it requires some leap of faith, a leap I am willing to take here as it never gets too outlandish. Sure, you can criticize all of the moving parts here and claim a lot of it to be untrue and far-fetched, but to me, it tried to keep an air of realism throughout. It never went too outlandish and unbelievable. I never saw the TV series, yet I managed to enjoy this one a good bit and it was really all I was hoping for. An entertaining, stylish, action crime thriller directed by the ever masterful Michael Mann. I am not necessarily surprised to see that this one is divisive amongst critics between those who love it and those who hate it, but to me, where this one won me over is simply in the style. As I said, it is all too sleek. It's really eye candy in movie form. Expand

Soulless lead characters and an absolutely mind-numbing second act squelch any chance that "Miami Vice" has in convincing the audience to buy its gritty, updated interpretation of the classic TV saga.

Many people are not satisfied with Collin and Jamie as Sonny and Rico, for their characters have little or none resemblance to original show, but i couldn't care less. Sonny and Rico are cool and smooth in this flick but also serious because situation ask for it. People are dying, cartel is going for their friends so there is noting to be funny about. Action scenes in this movie are most realistic that i' ve seen on big screen except Tropa de Elite. That alone said, if you like Bad Boys or Expendables and you expecting something like those movies, this one isn't for you.
Locations are great, from Cuba to Miami to Columbia and Haiti. Soundtrack is best, totally suited the movie and scenes.
Downside to this movie is un development of the characters, especially Sonny and Rico but acting of whole cast makes up for it, with akcent on Gong LI and Luis Tosar.
To sum it up : This movie is not for everyone and it's not trying to be. Mann knows what he want 's and delivers it, like it or not. Just like Sonny and Rico.

I don't quite understand why it was never received well but I think it's just amazing. Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx are both great, as well are the rest of the supporting cast, Michael Mann did an incredible job directing the movie, the plot develops well and is very interesting, the action scenes are done brilliantly, etc. Honestly, I don't think there's a single flaw in the movie. It's definitely different, so I guess some people expected something else. It's not your typical action flick, that's for sure. It's almost more of an action-thriller in how it's filmed and presented to the viewer. The shaky cam and camera angles and effects work when used because of the overall feel. I'm not saying everyone will love it because it is a bit slower and replaces dialogue with introspection from the actors forcing the audience to pick up on the subtleties and nuances of the plot's development. Those things aren't in your face so some people might get bored with it. Not me. I thought it was great. Expand

All you end up with is a listless, uninspired snooze-fest featuring some of the grainiest picture quality I've seen since the last time I watched an extended-play VHS tape. Atrocious handheld work makes the frame shake violently even during slow dialogue scenes, which is about 95% of this film. Michael Mann has always taken as much time as he wants to tell his stories, but at 134 minutes, Miami Vice is a bloated, boring, sleep-inducing nightmare that is nothing like Miami Vice I love... or the Michael Mann I love for that matter. The ultra-cool pastel fashions modeled by our heroes and the fantasy powerboat were always fun; the plots were easy to follow and the dialogue was often quite witty. This very long retrospective film , however, fails to evoke that. The plot is muddled and unconvincing, while the shootouts are noisy and even tedious.. Yet, the cinematography was quite spectacular at times, especially in South America (the Iguasso Falls!!) and along the Havana waterfront. Crockett is not as stupid as he looks; at least he knows when to take a break from his chores to carouse with Gong Li. She's ALWAYS great to watch. Expand

It was such a drag and was so boring and so stupid. There were a few cool or interesting bits but there were so many annoyances about this film - for example why were many of the scenes shot by shaky amateur cameramen?? Was the film shot by 12 year olds using camcorders? And the gun fights were terrible. It seemed like the characters in the film had unlimited ammo, and that they weren't aiming for the enemies. Gunfight scenes had characters shooting in random directions without stopping. They pointed their guns at each other and shot, but nothing happened. Apparently what most people consider Vice's biggest selling-point is what I consider its biggest flaw. The scenes change rather rapidly, and little is revealed through dialogue (with the exception of a few key moments). It's basically Heat with Sonny and Rico, except that this formula worked for Heat and makes Vice seem a little awkward. As if the premise of the movie wasn't already far-fetched (vice cops who live on the beach, wear designer clothes and drive expensive sports cars), the ending is pure fantasy (not to mention pure idiocy). It is also quite lengthy at 2 hrs 20 min; proper editing could have easily eliminated about 10-15 minutes. It is worth renting if you like movies about undercover police work and if nothing else catches your eye. I really can't recommend owning it. Expand

These characters are meant to be professionals who reside within a corrupt, bloody and violent environment. Mann is exploring the conflict in these characters of being in such an environment and having to supress their emotion. As a result Crockett and Tubbs have to be cold hearted. The fact that there are so many sex scenes? Perhaps to show that real love cannot exist within these surroundings. Miami Vice is not supposed to be 'glamourous' or 'rewarding'. Mann should be praised at not conforming to 'Hollywood' style 'wrappings'. The characters are meant to be distanced from the viewer. This is perhaps why we struggle to understand the dialogue and the speech. Mann does not want the middle class viewer to say to themselves--'oh I can connect with these characters, now I understand what this kind of life is all about' and then switch off the Tv or leave the cinema to return to milk and cookies and a warm bed. Crockett and Tubbs are meant to be difficult. People complain that there is essentially no story, which is absolutely dim-witted. The story is at its basic level a drugs bust. There thats it: what more do you want, aliens? The Lock Ness monster? A talking square of sponge? This film is searching for a gritty realism and that means no resolved endings or reformed charcaters, no closure or final resolutions which the viewer can be 'satisfied' that everything has fallen into place. The title only comes up at the end because nothing has changed: there will always be guns, drugs and killings. There will always be vice, and no Crockett or Tubbs can change this. Expand

Let me first start off by saying that if you didn't like Miami Vice, that was a personal decision to ignore the beauty and SUBTEXT that the film shows us. It's NOT meant to be an action movie, it is rather, something of beauty. Let me first start off by saying that if you didn't like Miami Vice, that was a personal decision to ignore the beauty and SUBTEXT that the film shows us. It's NOT meant to be an action movie, it is rather, something of beauty. It's life as shown through the eyes of a MORE than competent director (Michael Mann), and the life is that of those people forced to not live the normal lives of the viewer watching the movie. Colin Farrell is our main character, he is our driving force, and his little expressions and quips and behaviors hark back to the acting shown in Heat (nobody complained about Pacino, but Farrell must be bleak). It's not a direct throwback, or that at all, it's just Mann showing us that those people presented to us are just as human as us. He is confused, and he falls in love just as quickly as anyone who never gets to hold onto it long (his line of work). Gong Li is amazing in her role, a woman in the same type of situation as Farrell, and the love the show on screen is pure and honest. Let it be known, this movie is comparable to The New World, and if you didn't like that, then maybe you won't like this. I, on the other hand, loved both, and this movie was more than intriguing. Best picture of the year, hands down. Expand

Don't fault him with bad chemistry between actors. Sometimes you just can't get what you want out of your cast. His actions scenes are second to no one at all. The impact of bullets on metal, the realistic percussion of the firearms, and the scenery is perfect. The plot is weak and the actors just dont mesh. See Collateral and watch how the boring Tom Cruise is made interesting. Jamie Fox makes a better blundering cab driver than Tubbs any time. The casting was a mistake, which affected the plot. Go see this in the theater with accurate expectations. The plot will be weak, the actors will be poorly cast, but the action will be fenominal, even though spaced out. The music is great (I'm going to cuss out Itunes for leaving Audioslave out of the soundtrack. Anyone know where to get these new Audioslave songs?). Taking a speedboat to Cuba on a whim is a brilliant plot feature. Doesn't anyone wonder why Jan Hammer did not want to do the score or why James Olmos turned down a part? If I heard Jaime Fox and Colin Ferrel, I would have puked too! Not for this movie! Which is what I said when I saw the first preview online. I was cussing the casting. Make no mistake. Mann is an artist. He has great insite and soul. Jaime Fox! Come on Mann!!!??? It would have been better to find no name actors like they did for the original series Expand

By the way, to the person bellow who said he looked bloated n' all that -- dude broke a rib and herniated two discs preparing for this movie, so that might be why he didn't get nekked. I think, for a movie that was 2.5 hours long, it could've given us a bit more about the characters. I'm too young to know a thing about the TV series and couldn't care less about it. So, as far as I know, these two guys were just walking cliches. Which was okay, cos the movie was very well done, stylish. Oh, also: the bad guys here are awesome. The younger guy is hilarious, tho he is not really overly comedic. And the head honcho was really, reeeeally menacing, in a way movie drug kingpins aren't usually, even though they're supposed to be.
