A teenage girl forgiving her ex-boyfriend who cheated on her or challenging her mom to pay everything that she spent on her in cash or lying to befriend someone or even leave some friends are just these small things that one must have easily encountered or lived or done and even though it resembles too much with the reality, it still is surprisingly flat out funny. Lady Bird is a new milestone to this genre films which focuses on a particular character and displays different encounters and sequences which sometimes can become exhausting but not in here (the runtime too works in its favor), as it has the perfect amount of balance of everything in it whether it be then humor or drama. Saoirse Ronan has poured her heart out in it as portraying either stoned or rude or funny or innocent or stubborn; she has got quite a range and with the help of a great supporting cast it not only floats but sails away across the sea. Greta Gerwig seems well aware of her characters, tone of the film and plot; especially her screenplay which is always gripping. Lady Bird brews and encourages intense drama with amusing perspectives and walks perfectly between these lines with head held high.… Expand

I just did not get the point that Ms. Gerwig, a middle-class white woman who comes from Sacramento, CA and who actually graduated from Barnard College, a small liberal arts college in NYC, wrote and directed this play. It seems like narcissist--and even more narcissist when all the middle-class white film critic favored this movie. What is that? A tribute to your high school memory? People acclaim this film for being real, but I just did not know how is that real. Only real for a middle-class white girl. Oh she comes from California, she dreams about NYC, she looks pretty, she has the most adorable extracurricular activity, she **** with the most popular boy in her school, so what? All I see is privilege, not universal reality. I highly doubt if any film critic in favor of this has saw A Raisin in the Sun. Beneatha is a self-centered college girl, which is super like Lady Bird. But Beneatha is not the protagonist of A Raisin in the Sun, which reflects the hopeless living condition of African American community in 60s. Moreover, in A Raisin in the Sun, the Youngers have more difficulties, and they can barely find a solution. I think that's what makes a great work of literature--you survive and find faith in a hopeless place. To be honest, what difficulty does Lady Bird have? Has she grown? What happened in the end of the film is not growth, but what we call betrayal of your older self.… Expand

An ultimately well made heartfelt movie about a **** teen trying to overcome her rudeness and realizing that she might be the cause of her and her family's frustration. It's solid, unique, and has a good amount of comedy put in.

Lady Bird is a story that every American teenager can relate to in one way or another. Saoirse Ronan's character, Christine, is taking on her senior year of high school still unsure of her future other than the fact that she knows she wantsLady Bird is a story that every American teenager can relate to in one way or another. Saoirse Ronan's character, Christine, is taking on her senior year of high school still unsure of her future other than the fact that she knows she wants to go to school in NYC. The film follows the series of relationships Christine has with many different teenagers her age and how each of them shaped her. Then there is the even more emotional part of the story that deals with her and her caring yet restless mother, played by Laurie Metcalf, who's underrated performance carried the show. In many ways this story was just as much a coming of age for the seventeen year old Lady Bird as it was for her mother. The final moments leave you with an inspiring message of how forgiveness can never be overdue. It makes you want to dial up that friend/family member you just recently got into an argument with.… Expand

Very nice. That's all I can say. I could relate to it a lot cos I have a difficult relationship with my mum, and I'm leaving for university but, just because something is relatable doesn't mean it's perfect. Personally, I appreciate, that it is related to real life, maybe not only related, but also it represents the picture of most people's lives - not knowing who you are, strange relationships and everyday struggle with family members and friends, problems in school and in finding university and intimate life. So, I appreciate the focus on that. It's teen drama though. It says the movie is drama and comedy, didn't rally feel the comedy there. "Yes, I gave that name to myself. It is given to me by me" - that was fun haha! Anyway, I am used to teen comedies and I didn't get that movie as comedy. Somehow, soundtracks weren't enough and the script wasn't something special. Growing up in a Christian environment and attending a Catholic highschool made me think this movie would be somewhat relatable. This was definitely not the case. This was definitely not the case. I understand what they were trying to accomplish with the satirical portrayal of "outcasts," but it made the movie come across as ingenuine. Also, the terrible relationship between the mother and daughter seemed extremely forced and unrealastic at times. I get that daugthers and mothers fight a lot, but this movie really went out of the way to portray this to a point where it lost credibility. This movie is perfect for someone who is trying to relate to a simplified, and at times inaccurate, experience of highschool life.… Expand

Lady Bird works great as the coming-of-age-movie is it supposed to be - but only as that. It's a sweet movie with (to some people) relatable moments and characters. The characters feel a bit stereotypical at times, so nothing we haven't seenLady Bird works great as the coming-of-age-movie is it supposed to be - but only as that. It's a sweet movie with (to some people) relatable moments and characters. The characters feel a bit stereotypical at times, so nothing we haven't seen before. On the other hand, though, the chlichee-characters aren't too exaggerated and I didn't feel like the movie cared about being so different.

The story got a little confusing for me at times, as I didn't always feel like I knew what side each character was on. Especially Lady Bird herself was kind of hard to understand sometimes. I guess that's also part of the characteristics with people in her age, though. Maybe a little more context for the characters would have helped instead of just showing a very linear story, where there's a definite start and end with nothing beyond these lines.

The most impressive part of the film by far is the acting. If I had to only judge the acting, Lady Bird would be an easy 10/10. Everybody, from the main roles down to supporting characters with less than 20 minutes of screen-time, everybody is almost perfect. I do expect noumerous award-season nominations and wins.

As for the script, the dialogues are very real, very relatable and seldomly boring. It's not artistic or anytihng, it's just very real and fun, and the impressive acting only adds to that.

Production-wise, Lasy Bird isn't really worth mentioning. Normal camera, normal sound, normal music, everything is very average quality, which works good though. An exccentric production wouldn't make it better.

So to summarise it:
I loved the acting (10), I liked how real the setting, the characters and the story felt (8).
I didn't like the way the story was delivered, leaving me somewhat lost at times, despite the fairly simple plot (4). Unfortunately, instead of making me want to understand the story, it rather got me bored every other scene.
Overall a decent 7/10… Expand

I fully expected to hate this movie - avoided it in theatres and only watched it when I ran out of things to watch on a plane. I really did not anticipate being so blown away by how good it was, I thought it was going to be a live-actionI fully expected to hate this movie - avoided it in theatres and only watched it when I ran out of things to watch on a plane. I really did not anticipate being so blown away by how good it was, I thought it was going to be a live-action version of Pixar's Brave (which I hated).
A dude watching this probably will not understand or relate to the content at all, because it is such a nuanced, tender, and patient exploration of the relationship between a mother and daughter. But don't for a minute think this is a lighthearted 'chick-flick' - it's much more akin to something like Whiplash (the less violent, female version) in its focus on the relationship between two very imperfect people and how it affects your life for better or worse.
IMO, it's a perfect film.… Expand

With one of my favourite trailers of the year, the awards attention, the theme of coming of age and the critical acclaim, 'Lady Bird' very quickly became one of the year's most anticipated films for me. Deliberately didn't see it at openingWith one of my favourite trailers of the year, the awards attention, the theme of coming of age and the critical acclaim, 'Lady Bird' very quickly became one of the year's most anticipated films for me. Deliberately didn't see it at opening weekend though, just in case it was busy and difficult to get tickets, after the insane opening weekend of 'Black Panther'.

'Lady Bird' in no way disappointed. With the above, was hoping that it would be one of my favourite films of the year and it turned out to be exactly that, the awards attention and acclaim more than fully deserved. This doesn't just fly, 'Lady Bird' actually soars and have not seen a coming of age-themed film in recent memory this sparkling or honest or with this amount of humour, brains, heart and charm. Have seen it mentioned as a passion project, and if it was the passion and hard work can be seen all over.

It is a very appealing film visually, with beautiful and colourful cinematography and with editing that flows succinctly and cohesively. The music is has energy yet knows when to understate itself when needed. In her first film as solo director, Greta Gerwig directs with a nimble touch, the comedy is light on its feet and she avoids making the emotional elements heavy-handed or tonally jarring.

The script is one of the year's best, my personal pick actually for this year's Best Original Screenplay Oscar of the nominees. The comedy sparkles in wit and is genuinely hilarious, done in an honest and true to life way yet with some cringes like it would be in real life too. Over-sentimentality is avoided in the more emotional and dramatic scenes, there are some really sweet and poignant moments and an endearing personal touch.

Found myself really emotionally investing in and relating to the mother and daughter relationship, their bonding bringing tears to my eyes and then making me smile and laugh when botched and leaving me with hope at resolution at the same time. The coming of age/angsty elements have a truthfulness, authenticity and twinkle and it was very easy to identify with them if in the same position growing up, they're often very funny but also very heartfelt and charming.

Story is immensely engaging throughout right from the riotous opening to the more emotional and avoiding-being-too-pat ending, anchored by the mother and daughter relationship that entertains, moves and provokes thought. Didn't mind at all that it wasn't ground-breaking, due to not expecting it to be as coming of age can be predictable. Enjoyed the way the characters were written, and appreciated that the film broke away from the typical archetype of school teachers being over-disciplinary and without humour.

Performances are never less than great, with Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf fully inhabiting their characters and phenomenally. It was wonderful for both to get awards attention with both giving two of the year's best performances. Lois Smith twinkles too in her role.

If Lucas Hedges (who has grown quite a lot) and Timothee Chalamet (not as good as his truly remarkable performance in 'Call Me By Your Name' but showing why he is one of the most promising recent rising stars) continue to go down this promising path they are likely to go on to big careers.

Concluding, fabulous film and one of my favourites of the year. 10/10 Bethany Cox… Expand

So much of the dialogue and acting, which is led by fantastic performances from Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf, to even the look, this is very much a raw and honest portrayal of teenage life. Nothing felt phony nor unrealistic, everything felt honest. This is what makes this movie so special, the fact that this staged story has this real life feeling and honesty that it transcends all the pitfalls of the atypical coming-of-age teen dramas and instead is a wonderful and thoughtful film about entering adulthood and mothers. Even with all the arguing and the fighting, at the end of the day we all have this bond with our parents and our parents have to us that will never die! Greta Gerwig has set herself up for what will hopefully be an amazing career in directing and writing for what is truly an honest movie.

It's not a 10 because Lucas Hedges is flat-out awful in this movie!… Expand

The writing, cast, direction, and production design were all fantastic, but when you boil it all down the story itself is nothing groundbreaking or original. This could have been the story of almost any teenager in 2002.

Gerwig doesn’t have an adolescent view of growing up. She has a mature, wise perspective. One that realizes Juno and Boyhood are the teenage fantasies of blossoming adulthood. Lady Bird is the reality.

Really enjoyed it. Funny and interesting. Ladybird is as complex as real people are and I wish all films were this entertaining. Greta Gerwig did a great job casting and directing and as much as I enjoy her acting, I hope she directs more films too.

You will surely see yourslef in Lady Bird, the school problems with grades, difficulties about college, want to go to a different place that you think is better than yours. More than anything, i'm gonna say that this movie is about to value family, recognize how hard and tough is to take cara of a person, in every way, and we should not depreciate them, even if there are things that we don't like or think should be better in some way, our parents are people and we gotta be thankful to them for everything they have done. The movie also shows us, and make us remember/think about, the teenager problem with relationships, both love and friendship, the desire to make friends with people who are more "popular" and who seem to be better that your friends, most of the time that's not good, will just put away your true friends for a illusion and regret, this frendship part is very predictable and you see it coming, but it's well done anyway. Regret is showed in the movie in a amazing way, showing how the character makes bad decisions all the time and learn from it all the time, learning and growing. Saoirse Ronan does a terrific job, portraying a teenager, she have the innocence and at the same time malice of the age, the reaction of discovery and regret for bad attitudes, she is amazing. Laurie Metcalf also have a great job, the way that she does a mother that needs her daughter to do something and maybe doesn't make her understand that is formidable, you really buy her as a mother, the sadness and happynes that she apply on the character is genuine. Lucas Hedges has a story that is forgotten by the movie. Generally all actors did a pretty good job. The scenes that she is at school are much well done, that you can really see and remeber your time in school, it felt good. There is a cinematographic resource that tells something, at the beginning, it shows Lady Bird and her friend walking to home, from the right to the left, at the end she is walking from the left to the right, giving idea of ​​progression, while in Sacramento she had the idea of regression, just after it shows her and her mother gointo to the same direction in the car, she notices that isn't WHERE but WHAT or WHO we want, she grows right there as a person. Excellent film, but why negative comment about being a Republican and later another negative one about picture of Ronald Reagan which just happened to be in a wealthy person's home. It wasn't relevant to story in any way. Lady Bird was a fun coming of age story that kept me entertained throughout. I loved the series of experiences that Lady Bird went through even if they may not be super relatable to me (I am applying to colleges currently). This felt like another emotional roller coaster with great emotional value and great humor and funny jokes. The actors where as perfect as perfect gets. The director's style and choice in cinematography where noting out of the ordinary sadly. Just before scenes seen from the same angle and point of view. The movie is such an entertaining piece and it keep the tension high all the way through with it's amazing unforeseen events and turns that it depicts the struggle of real life perfectly. The shadiness and lies and every single detail was outstandingly executed. The reality is so deep in this movie and reflects on day to day life and teenager life in today's society. Overall it's a very good movie but it could have been a lot better if the director's style and writing would have been just a tiny bit better and creative. Plus the conclusion to the story is quite lackluster and the message is simple and before heard.… Expand

Lady Bird is set in 2002 about a girl who's graduating her Catholic high school and looking for a college that she wants to join and in that time she falls in love with a guy "Danny" also she plays a role in her high school play. The film is from A24 production written and directed by Greta Gerwig it's her first major directed film, she had directed a film before but no one heard about it.



First I want to focus on Christine or Lady Bird character played by Saoirse Ronan, i think the actress herself just transformed completely I remember seeing her in The Lovely Bones when she were younger and I think after 2014 The Grand Budapest Hotel her career went soo good, i loved her performances in both Lost River 2014 and Brooklyn 2015 she were really good in both films. So Lady Bird character is a very good written one by Greta Gerwig and amazingly performed by Saoirse Ronan I loved how she were unbelievably honest you really don't know what she were going to say and I miss that sometimes in some films, i don't like when I can predict everything the actores are going to say.

I swear the movie Lady Bird had one of the best acting performances I've seen in 2017, you just can see how the characters were real I mean the film is too basic and maybe that helped to.



The film was good but very faaaar away from being perfect or a great one, as I said the performances were very good and the direction and screenplay by Greta Gerwig were good but the general audience and even the critics praised the film way too much and I really don't know why maybe because for the fact that the film is directed by a female with all that #Timesup crap I don't really know.. and yes I get the film intention to try to focus on teenagers and inspire them on how they set up their life's financially and romantically, again Lady Bird was good I liked it but it wasn't that good. It not as I got bored from the film, it's just the movie was a normal comedy/drama film and the best thing about it were the actores, of course Saoirse Ronan especially she gave a great performance in Lady Bird.

I don't know if anyone will agree with me on that but I think Lady Bird is one of the weakest A24 film but still very good film, the only thing that I'm still not getting is how people praised it.

I give Lady Bird 7.2/10… Expand

Lady Bird doesn't necessarily have a specific plot. Lady Bird is trying to get to college, but it's more in the background in a film that's mainly just about life in general. Im afraid I cant make contact with this movie. I dont get the reason of this top grade in Meta.However the film attracted me to watch it to the end,but lots of scenes was boring and not new.By skimming some critics we can understand someIm afraid I cant make contact with this movie. Different themes are interwove into the narrative really well also, particularly in character development, where themes such as love, growth and family are presented as the characters continue to develop in the film. What the flux is wrong with reviews these days? I watched this because it was claimed to be the best hit of the year, but ended up being a slightly enjoyable movie. Is not that bad, but it's far far away from good to be at the oscars. Come on.

Earlier this year, Lady Bird made headlines when it broke Rotten Tomatoes records. I was really excited to see if it stood up, and after seeing it, I think it does. This is very different from most coming of age films, which is something I loved. My only real issue is that I wanted the movie to be longer. Wonderful film superbly acted and written. This is a gem. Went to see it with my teenage daughter and a bunch of friends, different ages and sexes and yet everyone just loved it. It is hugely obvious that 'Lady Bird' was directed by a woman. It takes a certain feminine patience and delicacy to carefully craft all the emotions and relatable moments of suffering, regret, love and laughter, all of these being filteredIt is hugely obvious that 'Lady Bird' was directed by a woman. It takes a certain feminine patience and delicacy to carefully craft all the emotions and relatable moments of suffering, regret, love and laughter, all of these being filtered through the prism of its coming-of-age lead character Christine McPherson (Saoirse Ronan), although she would prefer 'Lady Bird'. As she says at a casting for a play the name "was given to me by me".

So, Miss 'Lady Bird' is an extremely frustrated teenager, having near constant banter with her mom who also has her own past scars and she rubs them off on her daughter, being curious but also frivolous about sexuality and having pretentious ambitious of going to a proper East Coast College where "the culture is". But the beauty of her personality comes from director Greta Garwig and her carefully constructed approach towards it.

Her directorial talent shines the brightest when she slowly dissects her lead characters' deepest wishes, ambitions and sorrows through an understanding which I feel a man would not have been able to grasp. But her brilliant approach succeeded in making me understand and cheer for Lady Bird despite her anarchist ways of expressing herself.

And this dissection is applied to all the characters, especially Lady Bird's mother, Marion (Laurie Metcalf). Their chemistry is one of the best I have ever seen between two characters and their banters and eventual reconciliation has perfect writing with lines so relatable and harsh but funny. It is perfectly balanced. The only odd one out is Lady Bird's father, Larry (Tracy Letts) who is the only one in the film she has not argued with. He is a peaceful and understanding man always protecting her daughter even when she made mistakes and her interaction with him feels too real and touching.

This is, undoubtedly, one of the best films of the year, and Greta Garwig might just have one of the best directorial debuts ever. She brings forth her perfect recipe of feminine attention, strength and emotional delivery creating a raw, powerful, deep and absolutely beautiful story about the passage of a self-questionable teenager through life.… Expand

Everything that has been said about Lady Bird has already been said. I can't really add much here, but I'll try. Is Lady Bird a masterpiece? Heck no. It may have received no love at the Oscars (albeit with several nominations), but Lady Bird is a masterpiece of a film, deliciously amusing and, above all, heartfelt.
Lady Bird may be semi-autobiographical (it gives a sense of being deeply personal to its creator throughout), but it is not a young Greta Gerwig whose story we follow, rather Christine MacPherson (Saoirse Ronan), a Sacramento teen who prefers to be referred to by her “given name”, Lady Bird (“I gave it to myself, it’s given to me by me”). We watch as Lady Bird makes that daunting transition from adolescence to adulthood, battling the struggles of friendships, love and a more than uneasy relationship with her mother Marion (a phenomenal Laurie Metcalf). What is perhaps most incredible about Lady Bird is the way it takes one of the most cliched, safe genres in cinema, the coming-of-age, and manages to bring a freshness and spark to it with such ease. Lady Bird breaks no ground with its plot, but it proves that a film doesn’t have to do so to instil a real feeling in its audience and be something special. Greta Gerwig’s direction is utterly flawless; her understanding of character and canny eye for period detail lend the film a profound sincerity and a slick appearance, thoughtful and detailed down to a tee. Lady Bird feels like a love letter from Gerwig, a classic example of a film that is evidently special to its director and translates its emotional impact perfectly to its audience. This movie made me laugh and cry, often from one to the other, like a game of ping pong, yet never feeling unnatural or forced.
In truth, the success of Lady Bird relies on one person; Saoirse Ronan is faultless as the eponymous lead, bringing a youthful spunkiness to the role, coupled with a gorgeous vulnerability. Gerwig is not afraid to depict ultimately flawed characters; no truer is this seen than in Ronan’s performance, the young star carrying the film on her shoulders with an envious ease. Lady Bird finds its greatest performer, however, in Laurie Metcalf, playing Christine’s exasperated, yet bullishly strong-willed mother. Metcalf’s performance is simply astounding, her final scene enough to bring anyone to tears and rivalling Patricia Arquette’s Oscar-winning matriarch in Boyhood. Scenes between Ronan and Metcalf are some of the best in the film, sharply written and sometimes painfully relatable. The movie is backed up by a talented supporting cast, including a gentle father in Tracy Letts and Beanie Feldstein showing great comedic timing as Lady Bird’s insecure best friend, Julie.
There is something very beautiful about Lady Bird; it’s a very understated film yet has an unparalleled effect in entirely immersing its audience within the lives of its characters. It’s wonderfully funny, intelligently constructed and has an emotional core that is never loudly exclaimed but is always deeply affecting. A stunning film, Lady Bird leaves me hungry for more from Greta Gerwig.… Expand

It's a really sweet movie with interesting main character, even if I think that it's a bit overrated, though. This film is very much a coming of age, celebration of teenage friendship, stubbornness, self identity and to a lesser extent teenage artistic rebellion type film. I liked the quirky aspect to it and how laidback the main character is. I liked the quirky aspect to it and how laidback the main character is. She certainly tests the boundaries in relation to her mother. Also, its more of a drama than a comedy film overall, although there are some amusing moments.

Also true is there aren't exactly no cliches present but its a well presented film and it isn't too cheesy overall, I'd say, so I'd recommend it all the same (plus, in my eyes, Saoirse Ronan can (all but) do no wrong).

I've also liked Greta Gerwig as an actress in films I've seen thus far, so it was interesting seeing this, given its Greta's directorial debut. I reckon she is someone to look out for, as a director, in the future.… Expand

She is not a person that does the right things, her conflicts are often self made, but at the end she learns the faults of her character and begins to reconcile with her mother and no longer hide behind what she now views as a facade, her "new name" Ladybird. You could argue it's unrealistic, but there's something about Lady Bird that when you watch it, it feels undeniably real. One of the best filmmaking debuts of all time, Lady Bird is probably the best coming of age movie. Ever.

The music definitely played a huge role in the film. The song that caught my attention the most was ¨Hand In My Pocket¨ by Alanis Morissette. The song says the following, ¨I'm broke, but I'm happy, I'm poor, but I'm kind, I'm short, but I'm healthy, yeah, I'm high, but I'm grounded, I'm sane, but I'm overwhelmed, I'm lost, but I'm hopeful, baby¨ which I feel is the most accurate way to describe Lady Birds feelings and how she feels stuck in her environment, like she's okay but she's not. She knows she can do better for herself, she realizes her potential but she feels held back by her social class and the opportunities she thinks she doesn´t have. As far as the acting in the film, it was excellent. The contrast between Lady Bird and her mother was great. The love/hate relationship they carried in the film was very relatable and at the same time, it didn't feel forced. They both played their part extremely well that they complemented each other. Props to Mama Lady Bird though, she maintains her ¨tough mom¨ look throughout the entire film. She never let Lady Bird see her vulnerable side. Even when Lady Bird leaves for college, she keeps a front. At that point, she wanted to bid farewell to Lady Bird but it was too late. In the film, she never showed her vulnerable side.


All in all, Lady Bird is a great film, the first time you watch it. After that, you could easily get bored of it. It is a very cliche story but it has so much potential. Nothing really happens and a few issues brought up are never finished. Something I really liked, though, was the little insight of Lady Bird's life in college and that mini epiphany she got when she called her parents. Another great aspect of the movie was the mother-daughter relationship. It was cliche, but realistic and I'm sure many people could relate. Overall, the movie is very relatable but the issues could be better executed.… Expand

The 2017 Oscar nominated film Ladybird is a great coming of age movie that is constructed in it’s own clichés and tameness and is followed through to its fullest extent. Too many clichés can be perceived as a bad thing. For Ladybird they follow through with its relatability and quirkiness and not putting anything over the top. Many issues we see in the film can be in a way, basic. Trying to fit in with the popular kids, losing your virginity, a fallout with your friends, problems with your parents, going off to college, and not knowing how to drive. In the grand scheme of things these problems are very minimal but are exaggerated as the main conflicts throughout the film. Why? Because these conflicts seem huge in a teenagers life and frankly they really are. That's where Ladybird captures it’s true essence, in the basic clichés, and that’s why it’s so believable. The ending of the film seems pretty underwhelming at first but when you take a step back and look at the way ‘Ladybird’ or Christine acts through the movie you begin to gather it’s her moment of realization. She essentially began living a way of life by lying, she wasn’t really being herself once she began hanging out with the ‘popular’ crowd. She only hits that realization after going to college where she finally calls herself by her real name. Although the acting was great I still have a problem with casting choices in these coming of age films and Ladybird is no exception. They always cast people who are clearly in their early 20’s as teens just for the clear purpose of having sex scenes and I wish that this movie steered away from that. Also when put amongst other bildungsroman classics like Breakfast club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off or even Clueless for that matter, I don’t know if it’s on the same scale of memorableness. But at the end of the day, Ladybird is a great movie that deserves a watch.… Expand

Director: Greta Gerwig Starting the movie, less than five minutes in the first scene Christine and her mother are in a car and quickly go from having a beautiful mother-daughter bonding moment to a heated argument which leads to Christine jumping out of the car while it is still moving. This scene ultimately gives us the rundown of their relationship and an idea of how their future interactions will go. The mother daughter interactions could be a series in itself. Every scene displaying both Christine and her mother are like the first with bickering and back and forth disagreements defining their relationship. In fact, most of the scenes in Lady Bird can be tied back in some way to an argument that the two had or will have. I like how the director Greta executed that.

The movie’s music seemed to be scarce and bland. Often in movies, the music matches the tone and mood of an ongoing scene or scene to come. In Lady Bird, the music was used more as a tool to fill empty space rather than adding to the movie. In addition, there was barely music in the background, most music was being played in scenes like at the school dance.

I won’t go so far as to say the movie is not good, however I must say that because of my taste in movies I’d rather never watch it again. When it comes to the overall story told in Lady Bird, I feel as if it's cliché or generic. Teenage girl, trying to fit in with “cool kids” while being viewed as defiant by parent to chase a dream. Not downplaying it, I just feel like I’ve seen this twenty times already. I would only recommend this movie to a teenage girl or a grown woman who was once in Lady Bird’s shoes.… Expand

In preparation for life after high school, the self-proclaimed “Lady Bird” Christine McPherson attempts to reinvent herself as she searches for new friends, new interests, and a love life. Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird, manages to capture the teenage yearning for adulthood independence while also showing the childlike longing for parental attention and fear of the unknown. Her performance feels more like a candid teenager writing in their diary as opposed to a scripted movie, her casual body language and emotional expressions makes her lines feel organic. Laurie Metcalf stars as the tired, cranky mother of Lady Bird(Marion) who works tirelessly as the family’s primary income. The juxtaposed interactions between the emotional, carefree Lady Bird and the emotionless, tightly wound Marion builds layers for both characters as they bring out the worst in eachother. Even the appearance of the characters clash, Marion is shown in either her scrubs or a neutral-colored, conservative dress with a pinned updo while LadyBird is depicted with neon hair and casual, messy clothes. The smaller details of the characters along with the background combine to boost the plot points and add realism to the movie. But, at the same time, the movie still falls to certain cliches and tropes that makes the movie somewhat predictable, like when LadyBird left her life-long best friend Julie to hang out with the alternative crowd in hopes of having a chance with the brooding Kyle played by Timothy Chamalet. I’m sure the audience knew that Kyle would turn out to be a jerk and she would come crawling back to Julie, however, the scenes are written without any build up so the audience is just as shocked as Lady Bird when Kyle ultimately breaks her heart. Although coming of age movies are seen as the “bread and butter” of the film world, “Lady Bird” uses a cliche theme in an extremely memorable way.… Expand

It follows the story of a teenage girl named Christine, who refers to herself as “Lady Bird.” Although it is never explicitly stated why she likes to be called this name, it represents a much bigger meaning throughout the movie; realizing who she really is. Like many others her age, she has a desire to live beyond her hometown of Sacramento where she grew up. But she goes through an array of situations and issues before she must do this, all of which shape her into who she will be by the end of the movie. The film holds many of the typical coming of age cliches ranging from changing yourself to fit in to getting angry and arguing with your parents when neither are truly in the wrong. But it's these same cliches that many teenagers go through in real life which adds to its charm and draws viewers in. So yes, it is based off of the typical transition of teenagers to adulthood plot, but it is always interesting to see the path different directors take of showing this. As Christine finds herself stumbling through who she really is, we see her character truly pan out and grow through the well placed and thought out interactions with others around her. Whether it's the arguing with her mother in the beginning and the call made to her at the end showing her resolve; or the ignoring of her best friend to the realization that she is too important to let go, they are all things that we can connect to. The screenplay was written effectively and really does well highlighting crucial moments and the changes that Christine goes through. With many awkward yet humorous moments laced throughout, it reflects the reality of life and the people in it. The actors not only play their parts really well, but they make it look as if we are simply spectators in someone else’s life. The emotion that each actor brings to the movie only makes it more realistic and adds to its appeal. Adding in the right amount of spunk and humor is what makes the film better. While “Lady Bird” can seem to sometimes cut a bit too quickly to the next scene for my taste, it ends on a beautiful note as it shows that it takes time, patience, understanding and experience to grow up and evolve. By the end of the movie, Christine is able to realize who she really is and what is most important to her which is something that we can all connect to. It's about recognizing the relationships that matter and holding on to them, which is something this movie does beautifully. And while it may not be exactly like the past coming of age movies(nothing really is), its message is clear and it is a good watch, all because of its story, acting, and screenplay.… Expand

Throughout the movie Lady Bird, the main character, Christine/Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan), is a high schooler, who is just trying to fit in and to create a name for herself. As a high school student, Lady Bird’s frustration with her world is something that resonates with me. The idea of wanting to go away from home is especially true, seeing as most of my peers and myself, would like to go away for college. Lady Bird at times, felt chaotic, out of place, and rushed; however, although I first found this annoying, I reasoned that this format reflects the chaos and quickness of life.

On a positive note, there are many scenes in the movie that make the viewer laugh, and, for other teens watching it, something to relate to. At the beginning of the movie, while Lady Bird and her mother (Laurie Metcalf) argue about colleges, Lady Bird does something that most of us might wish to do in that situation: She jumps out of her mother’s moving car. Where some might criticize this as a “stupid” decision, for me, it reflects what most of us teens want to do, in the case where we are arguing with our parents. I mean, who doesn’t feel like jumping out of a moving car would be so much better than continuing a harsh argument?

Apart from great scenes like this, Lady Bird comes with great acting. When watching this movie, I could really relate to the frustration that Lady Bird was dealing with, when arguing with her mother, as well as her mother’s frustration, in having to raise her child and provide an income for her family.

When first introduced to the movie, I thought that it wasn’t as interesting as the reviews hailed. But after further analyzing it, I found myself relating to the characters and the story. Filled with the sorrows, joys, and spontaneity of life, Lady Bird is a good watch, especially for many teenagers, who can greatly relate to Lady Bird.… Expand

Released in 2017, it covers seventeen year old Christine “Lady Bird” McPhearson and her struggles with identity, puberty, and the relationships among her family and friends. Going by the progression of the movie, it wouldn’t be too absurd to believe if it was based on a true story. The realism maintained throughout Lady Bird would serve as a plus for some and a minus for others. It follows the coming of age genre to a tee. From discarding your friends to meet the popular girl’s approval to hanging out with horny boys and trying out other regrettable things with the hopes of finding herself, this movie definitely has it all. In addition, Lady Bird manages to portray most of these tropes through characters without cartoonishly one dimensional writing.
The movie’s strongpoint would be in its editing, which complements the name of the genre perfectly. You’ll be introduced with a smooth transition from shots of dialogue to a montage of correlating scenes that are only accompanied by whatever happens in each of those events. It makes some parts of the movie seem like you’re going through a video album of memories from an actual person. While other movies would strap one song over the montage of events to imply what emotion it should pull from the audience, the movie uses none to shift the mood from one to another without spelling it out for you. It's a testament to how sincere every interaction in reality is. As for the interactions between Lady Bird and people in her life, there’s not much to say. There's not a lot of need for suspension of disbelief, because you won’t really find anything out of the ordinary for the story of a seventeen year old girl. The movie restricts itself to a specific demographic for relatability. It doesn't speak on behalf of every teen and it's definitely not for everyone, but the grounded series of seemingly mundane events is the heart of Lady Bird's charm. As the credits rolled, I got the feeling that I was cut off from viewing the life of someone I was pretty close to. There's no telling of how well off she’s doing right now because reality is a series of ups and downs, not some determined destiny based on the outcome of the final scene. All that was left of Christine was what she learned from that final year in high school, and what she chooses to do next with her life is left to your imagination. It’s this aspect of the coming of age film that will stick with me for the rest of my life.… Expand
