Im not a huge Nicolas Cage fan, i despise his poor acting. i didn't give it the last 3 for the vote becasue it got to a certain point when it just went to far, such as when the aliens came in to the picture. From that part till the end i thought, surely they can do better then that. Yeah maybe it had something to do with religion i don't really know, becasue this film can confuse people really easily. The film overall is good, but can be better. First thing to do is get rid of Nicolas Cage, wrong actor to choose for this film, well he shouldn't be acting for any film really. It's ok but, i've seen better. Expand

My son and I like sci-fi, we gave it a 6 or 7, pretty good. Special effects were great and story was good, not great. The reviewers who gave this a 2 or 0 just don't like sci-fi movies and shouldn't be rating them ! Go see it.

Each minute it was building up on its strong premise really nicely. And when i first saw it it was pretty scary at times. The only flaw: the ending. It completely fell apart and it went from Knowing to, frolicking in a meadow. This really hurt my enjoyment of the film. But hey, it still is enjoyable. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Knowing's writer needs to have an IQ check. While the film was enjoyable, the logic was just horrible. if your going to make aliens come to preserve the human race, then they either shouldn't predict the future, except maybe the solar flare, or they just shouldn't be aliens. The aliens were a little bit unexpected after you see the pictures of God and the sun or the priest dad. Otherwise, great film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There seems to be quite a trend over the last few years for both disaster movies, such as The Day After Tomorrow and movies where numbers play a sinister role, such as The Number 23. This movie is something of a mix of both, although the disaster element isn't quite as prevalent.

The story is quite interesting, though it is one where you have to suspend belief (as my review title indicates) and it is somewhat let down by what I thought were formulaic aspects to the story, such as the colleague who urges John to stay away, not to put himself in danger for the sake of his son, thats after doubting if the numbers mean anything at all just shortly beforehand I believe(!). Also near the end of the movie it takes a particularly strong sci-fi turn, so to speak and indeed the scenes reminded me of something from ET or Close Encounters of the Third Kind almost, which I felt was a little over the top and, pardon the pun, may alienate some viewers.

I had read one or two reviews that put this movie in a dim light so I wasn't expecting too much but to be honest I was surprised, as I think if you can overlook the odd less than original scene and how far fetched it may appear and also as long as your aware that its more of a sci-fi based thriller than an all-out action movie, then you should still quite enjoy it, as I did.

Its not a perfect movie by any means but I still found it quite intriguing and was quite impressed with the special effects used, some scenes take you by surprise, though their not too often when they do occur their quite good and I know how easy it can be for me to be distracted and lose interest in movies especially nowadays but I felt that this movie, despits its flaws, was still quite gripping and kept my attention. I liked how the movie built up to a different ending than the viewer may expect, though again people will probably have differing opinions about the ending. The movie is just shy of two hours long and while its perhaps not the best movie of that length, it certainly kept my attention and entertained me during that time, which is quite good.

Certainly the action scenes are well staged, they are grand and tense. Movie had a lot of surprising, riveting turns due to which audience is bound to know what will happen next.

At first, I thought it was "save the world" type but by the end we get to know that it is not.

I had a complain regarding the film. The middle portion of the movie was slow and stretched. Still, I think the captivating final third more than makes up for it. Ending should not be spoiled because it changes everything.

It's NOT one of the worst films ever made, and Zachrid W., for someone who says he, and I quote, "_knew_the whole story...," the movie DID NOT involve aliens. Those were angels, not aliens. They weren't taking the kids to another planet, they took them to either Heaven, or a renewed Earth (thus the kids running towards the Biblical Tree of Knowledge). Perhaps you should pay more attention next time. And no, I'm not Christian and therefore defending my faith, but even I could tell they were angels....There's a lot of unfair reviews here, since the movie's NOT saying science is bad and there's no such subtext, and it's not patronizing. It tries to reconcile science and faith together (i.e. the scene where Cage tells his class about the Sun being the right distance from the Earth for life to begin, chance or determinism, accident or process?). My problem with the movie is that there were far too many genres for it to be focused: religious, horror, apocalypse, mystery, etc. Expand

It starts out solid, gets lost in the muddle in between, and then comes back strong for the finish. It's in that middle ground that this film fails to captivate and keep the viewer satisfied. As always, Cage is believable and entertaining, but even his spazzoid performance could not keep the core of this film from sagging. Not a bad experience actually.

Since I'm secluded from movies and yesterday I was with my family trying to find a film to watch with them on my birthday, I had to be sure the movie gonna be easy to watch. There is no need for a masterpiece, just something that brings us the will to finish it. "Knowing" works in that scenario.

The plot is much simple, as it symbologies. Also, I believe some scenes become much more predictable because the editing shows us what will happen minutes before. A good example is the plane sequence. the moment we found ourselves in the car, we can hear the airplane's turbine subtly. That's the way the movie has to inform us "See, it didn't happen suddenly. There was development. Did you hear it, right?" A proper development would fix the predictability problem.

And I know we can't judge so hard since the world was coming to an end, but goddam, that woman was stupid. Why? Cuz the script couldn't find any smarter way to advance the plot. It is so obvious sometimes.

But in the end, we love Nicolas Cage, and the movie holds your attention.

He must have sent the kid to the candy store in his place. Dark City, Proya's masterpiece sets the viewer up for this collosal letdown of biblical Hollywood proportions. This flick rips off Signs, Da Vinci Code, Close Encounters, War of the Worlds and waxes it to a smooth shine with Armegedon special effects. It is the ultimate disaster flick because of spectacular and terrifying subway and airplane crashes and oh yeah the film itself is a disaster. Nicolas Cage is a great actor but he should stop doing Wil Smith garbage. This movie could have been edited down to 90 minutes and been not half bad but it got drunk on effects after it couldn't sustain the intrigue for more than 45 minutes well snap crackle pop. The plot holes are so huge its mind blowing. Why would aliens tell a little girl that bad events are going to happen? What does a rail crash have to do with the apocalyptic end? The destruction of the earth isn't really a new concept and it is brave to go along with it (which I guess is what some of the critics that gave positive reviews are referring to). But the hokum of the aliens taking two children to repopulate a new planet? Why only two? The space ship is massive! And what are the black stones for? If the thing manages to avoid complete preposterousness, theNobody requires plausibility from a movie like “Knowing,” which features slender blond aliens, intimations of apocalypse, clairvoyant children and Nicolas Cage as an astrophysicist. If the thing manages to avoid complete preposterousness, the audience can still have a good time.

Or maybe even if it doesn’t: the folks at a recent sneak preview of “Knowing,” directed by Alex Proyas (“Dark City,” “I, Robot”), seemed to be enjoying themselves, though it may have been at the movie’s expense. (Just as well, since they were seeing it free.) If your intention is to make a brooding, hauntingly allegorical terror-thriller, it’s probably not a good sign when spectacles of mass death and intimations of planetary destruction are met with hoots and giggles.

It’s safe to say that the crowd was laughing at Mr. Cage, rather than with him, since Mr. Cage rarely expresses mirth on screen. Instead, he favors a demented, compulsive intensity, which can sometimes be kind of fun, for example in the “National Treasure” movies. In “Knowing,” though, he seems to be exploring the rich vein of crazy he tapped in Neil LaBute’s train-wreck remake of “The Wicker Man.” Mr. Cage screams and yells and flails, smacks a tree with a baseball bat, waves a gun at a slender blond alien and barks “this is not a crank call” into a pay phone after calling in a breathless warning of a terrorist attack.

And why not? What would you do if you were an M.I.T. astrophysicist who discovered that the numbers written down 50 years earlier by a spooky schoolgirl and sealed in a time capsule were prophecies of subsequent catastrophes? You might also hit a tree with a Louisville Slugger and start ranting like a madman. But the odd thing about Mr. Cage in this movie is that even when he is responding to the threat of complete human extinction, you still can’t help feeling that he’s overreacting.

His character, John Koestler, is, like most movie dads these days, a widower, stricken with grief and trying to raise a cute, precocious young son (Chandler Canterbury). Once John starts running the numbers from the spooky girl’s spreadsheet, the tone of the movie switches from foreboding creepiness to apocalyptic hysteria, summed up less in the occasional explosion or transportation-related fireball than in Rose Byrne’s incessant shrieking. She plays Diana, daughter of the spooky schoolgirl (and mother of another one; both are played by Lara Robinson), and evolves from mysterious stranger to potential love interest to raving hysteric in record time.

Though not quickly enough. The draggy, lurching two hours of “Knowing” will make you long for the end of the world, even as you worry that there will not be time for all your questions to be answered. Who are those slender blond folk, called “the Whisper People” by John’s son and Diana’s daughter? Are they goth vampires who showed up early to audition for the “Twilight” sequel? Former members of Kraftwerk? Did they steal all those smooth black pebbles from a day spa after a hot stone massage? Is that why they seem so relaxed?

Actually, you will figure out who they are long before the astrophysicist does and stop caring long before that.

Is Hollywood so clueless about real religious experience that it thinks it proceeds from depression to complete skepticism to fanatical certainty based on some numbers scrawled by a young girl and placed in a time capsule 50 years earlier. It;s enough to give credibility and substance to Bill Maher's adolescent view of religion in "Religulous". However, Proyas can still direct a great action sequence. Expand

Slow-moving suspense film about aliens (who can see the future) who spend most of their time attempting to influence / kidnap kids. But don't worry, they have a good reason! Because all of humanity is going to perish from a massive solar flare, so the aliens are taking children in an attempt to "save" the human race. But the parents can't come with the children. Oh, no. Only those "called" may journey to humanity's new home. Sheesh.

Creepy aliens aside, Cage hams it up more than usual, but without him I'm not sure if this movie would even be watchable - and I'm not a fan of his at all. Nobody else makes much of an impression. There are some impressive camera shots - including a long tracking shot of a crashing airliner - and some impressive CGI effects, but not enough to save a joke of a plot. The more I think about it, the lower my rating gets. I started out giving Knowing a 5, but my final verdict is a 3 out of 10. I'll quit before it gets any lower.

Finally, a good sci-fi movie, with touches of suspense and horror, and a nice tension. In fact, the two major strengths of this film are the visual components (airplane disaster or scenes of looting crowds, closer to the end, are visually impressive, for example) and the central idea of the plot: a numeric prophecy investigated by a skeptical mathematician. The problem is that the good things in the movie end here.

From the middle, the film loses quality. With prophecies solved the plot thread ends. From there, the film extends because it has to close the story anyway, giving rise to plot holes the size of houses and inserting immense religious symbology for no reason. I read a comment that said the movie is full of subliminal propaganda to Church of Scientology... well, I actually detected symbols with religious connotations, but I'm not an expert in subliminal messages or in that sect to properly identify a connection to a specific cult. Another problem is the hammy and unnatural performance of Nicolas Cage, who ceases to be skeptical too suddenly and unbelievably. At the beginning of the film, he lectures at MIT in which he approaches determinism and coincidentality... even this could have been best used in the script! The film is loaded with CGI of fairly medium quality, but the end is more worthy of a computer game than a movie.

In fact "Knowing" is the perfect title for it, because I _knew_ the whole story 10 seconds after the boy opened the envelope. So this whole thing was a waste of time. [THIS CONTAINS SPOLIERS!] It's a far below-average "The world ends next Thursday"-flick. And perhaps the plot-twist, that judgement day is upon Nicolas Cage, would have been surprising to someone, if they haven't already given it away in the movie-posters. You know that the world will end, that there is nothing Mr.Cage can do about it, you know that these guys are aliens and you know that they will take the kids with them and blahblahblah... the whole story seems to be assembled out of a "screenplay-construction-kit" or they just pulled cards with tags like "aliens", "end of the world" and "foresight" on it, and filled the gaps with special-effects. ...oh ok, well the special effects are good. So the movie feels like something M. Night Shyamalan and Roland Emmerich threw up on a tequila driven night. Expand

What exactly was the purpose of this film? I could have found better uses for the millions spent on this horrible movie. I really can't believe any one gave this a high rating.

This movie is completely hosed from the start and spends the entire time mixing myths and folklore with religious undertones, special effects and wishful thinking. The story has no believability and I find it very difficult to suspend my disbelief system in order to enjoy this movie.

Don't get me wrong, I like Nicolas Cage, but Jesus dude, couldn't you pick a better script than this? Oh, yeah, tax issues, gotta pay the man.

When I first saw this movie I thought it was from the same people who made The Happening, but I see that it was from another moron who knows every thing about the technical side of movies but nothing about good scripts and directing.

I don't think a 1,000 writers with a 1,000 re-writes could have made this a good enough movie to waste money on and it is a good thing I got to see it for free.
