Strongly reminiscent of classic British tea-and-biscuits murder mysteries (think Midsommer Murders, Death In Paradise or any of the myriad Agatha Christie adaptations) with a memorable victim, a massive inheritance, a stately home full of suspects with motives that emerge piece by piece, capped off by Daniel Craig's quirkily New Orleans-ish accented consulting detective Benoit Blanc and Ana de Armas' wide-eyed and innocent-seeming undocumented migrant nurse Marta Cabrera. The old-fashioned stately home and the traditional battle for the inheritance sits very neatly alongside up-to-the-minute concerns such as attitudes towards migrants and teenagers tweeting alt-right memes from the toilet.

It's hard to give a proper review of a whodunit without giving away too much, suffice to say that from very early on in the film we shift from trying to figure out who they are and what they dun to wondering if they can get away with what they dun, a welcome twist on what could have been a highly orthodox mystery plot.

An absolute blast of a film.

ILately for the past few years i've been someone who has felt uninspired and uninterested in movies to the point where i don't bother going to the cinema unless i'm dragged there by a friend, but Rian Johnson has restored my faith in movies. I was so impressed with his work on The Last Jedi so i decided to see Knives Out. It surpassed all expections. I was completely engaged the whole time, i felt like i was experiencing everything unfold right along with the characters. Also, I think it was an important movie in todays world. There are so many people that cling to their racism and xenophobia and hate and people need to realize how it affects innocent people who are human just like us. THANK YOU Rian Johnson. Your passion and love that goes into your movies is SEEN and appreciated. Its so human and thats why it connects so well with me. I plan on seeing it again tomorrow. Expand

The mystery was (Scooby-Doo) predictable, I figured it out as soon as the killer appeared on screen. It probably would have been a lot less predictable had the movie of been in the perspective of the anonymously hired detective.

The movie its self was at least entertaining. None of the characters annoyed me besides being horrible people, but that was on purpose and not just because of bad writing.

There are few legitimately funny lines in this movie (despite it not beong a comedy) rather that was intentional or not I really cannot tell. The "Especially eat **** line was amazing.

The movie is self aware, in fact they straight up mention they are ripping off Clue. Which is bad you should never mention you are ripping off something. Regardless of the mistakes of the movie I had a good time. Also it's very odd seeing Katherine Langford playing a character being accused of murder after seeing '13 Reasons Why.'

When Rian Johnson is in charge of writing and directing a production, I have an intuition that the film will do wonderfully well. And really, this is what happened. But we have a problem here.
As we all know, Rian Johnson is known for its famous twists in the film. This happened in 'The Last Jedi' and it happens here ALMOST ALL THE TIME. The first two times, the twists are shocking and make the viewer frustrated, but soon after the twists no longer shock and lose all their charm.
Thanks to that, the film will not win my 10, but it came very close.

The pacing of the film was rapid, allowing me to stay engaged and on the edge of my seat for the entire two hours. Despite being labeled as a suspense movie, it managed to offer hilarious dialogue and carry a surprising amount of emotional heft. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Knives Out was a super engaging movie and with an amazing plot. I didn’t want the movie to ever end multiple times throughout the movie. The actors were all very good and they were pretty funny. The Cinematography was beautiful and the use of foreshadowing and subtle symbols in the movie was really smart. At the beginning of the movie, Harlan Thrombey said something about not being able to distinguish a real knife from a prop knife and in one of the last scenes, Ransom uses a fake knife when trying to kill Marta. Almost as if Harlan planned the whole thing like one of his books. The baseball that was on Harlan’s desk also took a wild trip throughout the film, being passed by many people, and eventually landed back where is was in the beginning. This is analogous to Gravity’s Rainbow as Detective Benoit said his working process was like: “The projectile’s path can be traced and calculated and he is there waiting for the truth to land at his feet.”

One part of the movie that I did not really like was the generic characters. They really didn’t have much depth it seemed. Marta was a shy, truthful girl, Ransom was an entitled, **** son, the detective was a cunning, handsome man, and so on. It seemed like none of the characters had any depth. Even the kids in the movie were called each other stereotypical names: alt right troll and liberal snowflake. I wanted the characters to develop but they never did it seemed like. Marta never overcame her visceral reaction to lying, she was just able to hold her vomit in longer.

The dialogue was really quick and intelligent. I really liked the banter that the members of the Thrombey family had with each other and it kept the scenes suspenseful yet funny. The sequence of scenes when the will was about to be read to the family was my favorite of the movie. The dialogue was really good and we got to see each character’s personality come out and it was a major turning point in the movie when Marta got all of the inheritance.

With an ensemble cast of fun character performances, the narrative followed the least interesting among them. Despite my enjoyment of particular performances from Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collete, and Jaeden Martell, I am torn on if the were actually good or just marginally better than their lackluster costars such as Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. The return to the ensemble mystery in "Knives Out" was refreshing from Rian Johnson and I wait with bated breath for "Knives Out II" and other classic mysteries to come out in the future. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked the cast and set up and I would’ve rated this movie a lot higher if weren’t for two detractions. The biggest being the set up of the apparent murder suicide. The nurse accidentally gives her patient 100mg of morphine through an IV and he miraculously stays conscious for at least 10 minutes while they figure out a plan and execute it. The next criticism is a continuation of the first, the lady is a nurse therefore she would easily know something is in fact a miss since the guy stays conscious after the so called massive overdose. The movie is built upon this flimsy premise. That out of the way I did enjoy the ending as I didn’t see it coming. The only other complaint was that the movie starts out rather slow.going Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Knives Out is described by critics as "...paying homage to classic detective stories but gives the genre a timely twist". Spoiler Alert ... the twist is that it's a Whodunit SPOOF (in general), a Agatha Christie whodunit spoof (in particular) and, finally a Hercule Poirot spoof (more precisely). The screenplay is very well written and admirably performed by a wonderfully talented cast. Without giving the plot away, but justifying my categorization, I'll say this: the antagonists are obnoxious, law enforcement are somewhat dimwitted and inept, and PI is "over the top" superior. Throw in a "KFC" southern accent (perhaps a spoof of the Great Belgian sleuth's French accented English???), a preposterous plot and a wildly entertaining denouement, and you have a thoroughly enjoyable 2 hour comedy spoof. See it for what it is and LAUGH to "yur" heart's content! This movie is definitely worth your time and attention ... and you read it here, first (or thereabouts). Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Twisted as never seen before, the movie tries to tell a complicated story of a simple murder, yet to be seen as a suicide which to your surprise it will. Daniel Craig's magnificent performance stunts you since the very beginning of the movie. Editing had to be extremely difficult in making such a movie. Music rhymes with the story as it slowly but excitingly moves forward. Chris Evans' brilliant vicious character shows how talented he is after years of playing Captain America with too few dialogues.
Don't miss watching the movie.

Incredible. Loved it!

Even on just one watch, it's one of my favourites already - I have a feeling I'll be revisiting this a lot. I had heard amazing things about this since its release and, man, is the hype befitting. It's a brilliant 131 minutes, even if it feels much shorter than that given how enjoyable it is.

The casting is impeccable. Daniel Craig is superb in the role of Blanc, I've actually found Craig a tad hit-and-miss - even with 'James Bond' - but he is utterly superb here; even with that unusual yet definitely entertaining accent.

It's by no means The Craig Show, though. Ana de Armas is excellent as Marta, she does a lot of heavy lifting in terms of making her character's situation fully believable. She's great from start-to-finish.

Michael Shannon is top notch too, I literally always find him fun to watch - from 'Boardwalk Empire' to, even, 'Kangaroo Jack'. Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Lakeith Stanfield and Christopher Plummer are all fantastic too.

The plot is enthralling, it's crafted together expertly. It reveals bits way earlier than I was predicting, which made me worry it was going to all fall flat at any moment but it kept turning out to be the perfect time to twist the story. The comedy is also very funny, I laughed a fair amount.

A joy to watch! I haven't got a bad word to say about 'Knives Out'.

Harlan Thrombey
The Thrombeys, are what seems to be defined as a dysfuncional family; corrupted with conflicts of wealth and fortune. As much as they hate each other, they wouldn't miss an evening to celebrate their beloved pop's birthday.
Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is a successful mystery novelist; mainly introduced as the beholder of the family's wealth and fortune. He was found dead with his throat slit and blood flowing from the sofa to the floor of his office, in the morning after his 85th birthday.
Official reports of his death stated that it was a suicide, but an anonymous tipper sent a letter to Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), believing that the truth may say otherwise. The letter is what led this famous detective to join on the investigation. Blanc together with two policemen (LaKeith Stanfield and Noah Segan) endeavor to unveil the mystery of the sudden death, and making everybody a suspect to be further questioned. The whole family might not be proven guilty of murder yet, but they're surely guilty of hiding unforgiving secrets and taking advantage of Harlan's wealth for their own pleasure.
Blanc might not get truth out of the Thrombeys, but one thing he knows for sure. There is one who can't lie without feeling the need to vomit, and that is Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas); Harlan's personal carer and nurse whom the Thrombeys call her as part of the family.
"Knives Out" is such an amusing story with a good laugh and tension, and full of unexpected plot twists. It is as if it's telling the audience exactly what happened and making us feel like we already know who is the obvious culprit. It turns out, we're just as clueless as many of the characters in this movie.
This Mystery/comedy movie by Rian Johnson is quite a masterpiece. Not only because of its fascinating casts, but also the well-directed and thought-out storyline that keeps people hooked. The movie begins with an establishing shot designed to inform the audience where the action will take place, and showing the relationship between the objects shown with the main character in the movie. It takes place in a a gothic revival mansion, creating the mood for a perfect mystery house. The interiors of the house is decorated with creepy props from unusual looking dolls, medieval statues, to the iconic knife sculpture; perfect for portraying the personality of Harlan Thrombey as a man of dark humor and mystery. All the technical process of this film is brilliant, from the placement of each props, blocking of each characters, the framing and the color palette of the house, made every scene aesthetically pleasing. The most significantly important piece is the painting of Harlan. It gives a statement that although Harlan might have died in the beginning of the movie, the painting of him figuratively says that he still owns the house and rules the family, and the sense that he is still looking down at them.
I say that it's fair that this movie has such high ratings and received many awards and nominations, for instance IMDb rated an 8 out of 10 and also an 82 in metascore universal acclaim. It's acceptable because I do feel like all the elements in the movie combined, creates this really entertaining story. In conclusion, I recommend this movie as a must-watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 'Knives Out' (2019) is a mystery drama with some elements of a thriller, which was directed by Rian Johnson. The script was also written by Rian Johnson. The actors who played their roles are Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson among others.

The plot reveals mutual relations in the family of an author of detective novels. By writing them, he made his fortune. As a result of his finance, wealth interest his family members. Every one of his relatives has their own reasons. The events in the movie are disclosed steadily, telling the story of every character, their conflicts and mutual relations between every member of the family.

The movie received several nominations. I wish also positively to acknowledge the acting of Daniel Craig and Jamie Lee Curtis. You will probably like this movie if you are fan of detective novels and movies. 'Knives Out' is a great one.

General Review:
Hosting a cast of big name actors from the likes of James Bond and Captain America and many more this is a fun murder mystery movie which will leave you guessing to the end.

The Good:
The interaction between the family members was enjoyable and provided laughs throughout the movie.
A unique medical condition to one of the characters made for a very interesting and well used narrative tool.
Multiple mysteries and twists and turns intertwined throughout the movie but for the most part if you are paying attention there are hints along the way which makes the ending make sense.

The Bad:
As clever as Mr Blanc is depicted a lot of his conclusions were based upon people remembering the exact wording of conversations from an emotional night that happened days beforehand. And as most scientists will agree eye-witness testimony and human memory are some of the weakest forms of evidence.

Final Thoughts:
An enjoyable movie, at times I was certain I knew the answers to the mystery, and at times my guesses were accurate only for another spanner to then be thrown into the works which added another layer to the overall mystery. Would recommend giving this a watch if you have a couple spare hours and will be very interested to see what happens in the announced sequel.

Score:
7.5 out of 10 pineapples!

In his minimal career so far, he has managed to capture my love of film every time. Whether it’s his first film Brick or Looper or even The Last Jedi, Johnson just has a way of engaging me that few directors do. Knives Out is without hesitation my favorite film of 2019. Is the best? Maybe, maybe not. Someone could argue Joker or The Irishman or maybe even Marriage Story, but for me Johnson’s throw back to noire mystery was absolutely everything I wanted in a film.

There are so many turns you don’t see coming, and even some you do and as time goes on Johnson leaves you dangling on the string time and time again. It was one of my favorite experiences in the theater this year and I couldn’t recommend it more. The entire cast was perfect. Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Toni Colette, and Chris Evans show just why they are some of Hollywood’s elite. And, Daniel Craig is absolutely sublime. Trust me, when I say - go see this on the big screen.

A romp through classic murder mystery, but with enough fresh takes to be exciting. Every separate part of this movie delights. I was even able to come to accept, and then love, Daniel Craig's southern drawl.

Knives Out… Sharp and Full of Holes

S2S: What is Thanksgiving without families coming together, airing their drama and disdain and a little bit of MURDER! Yes, Knives Out provides us with not a movie that reminds of morals behind the season, giving thanks, loving family, and fun and games like Mafia and WHO DONE IT?!

TF: I hear you there. Rian Johnson’s Knives Out is mainly style over substance. It is like Johnson decided to write and direct a less serious, contemporary version of Murder on the Orient Express, which had a remake in 2017. You may hear a lot of comparisons to that movie. Knives Out’s plot is both familiar and convoluted; but, it doesn’t mean it is not worthy of a viewing.

S2S: Knives Out is described by Lionsgate as “When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan’s dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death.” After that I can’t give much more without dropping a spoiler. But this puts us in a perfect position to discuss.

S2S: Knives Out is jammed packed with a star-studded ensemble. Jamie Lee Curtis, Daniel Craig, Chris Evans who all do a really solid job portraying their individual characters. Sidenote: each individual character couldn’t get anymore stereotypical or carbon copy to previous mystery movies. Daniel Craig’s southern drawl was quite amazing, even if offensive to the Colonel. Throughout the movie, the cast gave moments of convincing and captivating performances. Especially, the relative newcomer to the acting world Ana de Armas, who played Marta, had times where she wasn’t put in the shadow of the other looming superstars in the cast. Interestingly enough, another star cast could’ve done this movie and it wouldn’t be the same at all. Either way, the cast/movie has charm and is entertaining.

TF: I agree that the cast is star-studded and these actors are clearly having a great time playing these characters. I love Daniel Craig in this role. It feels rare that we see him stretch like this and it’s fun. However, I do think his Benoit Blanc is somehow both too broad and not broad enough. I was getting Inspector Clouseau vibes, but I wanted more daffy antics. Also, Christopher Plummer, Chris Evans and Jamie Lee Curtis are sinking their teeth into these mysterious Thrombey family members. Michael Shannon, as Harlan’s son benefiting from nepotism, and Toni Collette, as a scheming daughter-in-law, are chewing scenery left and right. There’s consistent great energy when these actors are on the screen.

S2S: Unfortunately, the cast doesn’t wholly save this movie. There are so many plot holes in the script or the editing that we left the theater saying, “just pretend like that made sense” or “they forgot all about that”. It’s almost like it was a donut with hole in the middle, another donut. The storyline in itself is not original but the way the story is told saves that in a way. It felt as if I was being read one of Harlan’s books, which is great but it felt as long as one of Harlan’s books as well. This movie drug on way too long. I felt okay checking my phone because I knew the end was imminent even though the biggest secret and reveal wasn’t complete.

TF: Yes, but don’t leave out the set design. The production design of the house is outstanding. Everywhere you look, there are knick-knacks and interesting set pieces. A huge portrait of Christopher Plummer as Harlan looms over a room in the house as the patriarch’s presence does in the family. The structure of the home itself is a marvel. Lastly, I will mention that at times the music is very gripping. There are some strings striking at one point that were accenting tension. These parts of the production really help things come together.

TF: But you’re right the real problem is that ultimately the mystery isn’t great. The plot points are kind of obvious and then become convoluted, if you try to unpack it. Knives Out feels maybe 20 minutes too long. There’s so much going on in order to build to the conclusion that the movie loses some steam along the way. I wanted more comedy than mystery since the mystery wasn’t very mysterious.

S2S: With that said, Knives Out is clever and entertaining at times, but isn’t worth the time in the theater. The movie may be worth matinee money but ultimately this is a perfect FX or Netflix movie. Something you watch once and then can leave on in the background. TF: Knives Out is fun and has some smart moments. This cast is the reason to stick with the movie to the end. The real question is does the cast do enough to elevate the middling plot. I would be on board for another Benoit Blanc movie in the future.

But the Foghorn leghorn accent from OO7 was really horrific. Silly to be honest. The mystery is extremely easy to solve, just follow the politics. The person who is the least woke is always guilty. And modern mysteries will never have a bad guy who is from the protected group like Marta, so you know she is going to be the good guy.
But what I thought was maybe too unsubtle was the way the writer had conversation that was 100% about politics, and made a slight bit at pretending that he was making fun of both sides. Really the message was very clear; Americans are odious, spoiled, untalented people who are living in luxury because of what their predecessors did. Its time to be kicked out of our house, and hand everything over the kindly, loyal, intelligent and honest illegals who deserve to have everything we now have. And if we object? Well, then we are criminals. Its not like the subtext is complicated. American characters are only good to the degree that they help Marta. the person who is a Foreigner taking the right to be in our country through criminality. She is portrayed as the hero, of course. I almost feel sad for people who didn't notice this. Other then that you have bad acting, plot holes, and a clumsy attempt to copy Agatha Christie. Except Christie centered her mysteries around family dynamics, and interesting characters. This is really all about politics. This what all of the arguments are about too. Its just a bit of soulless propaganda pretending to be a mystery. But Im giving it a few start because of the lovely house.
