Uma Thurman is a badass, the action is great and bloody, even bordering on being downright silly at some points. The toe closeup and the shoeless lady band, c'mon Quentin.

I thought the blond girl was called bill the entire time until i watched volume 2. Plus they dont even kill bill anyways. overall id say this movie is a 4. It has cool action but the closeup shots of the blond chicks feet were too much for me and i had to stop watching

overall i give it a 4. Aswell watching a half completed movie isn't good its like micro transactions in movies rather than video games. overall i think a fair raiting for this movie is a 4

Beautiful film based on revenge with an almost exaggerated dose of violence especially in the finale. This film is sometimes also sympathetic because it features some meaningless or re-violent sequence.

Those are great movies all in their own right. Easily at least 9's, all of 'em... if not also 10's some of them. However, for me this one hits like no other. It's such a phenomenal amalgamation of so many film subgenres that I love, Kung fu, samurai / ninja, anime (probably the best anime you've ever seen), spaghetti westerns. It's all here, seamlessly integrated into one cohesive Tarantino action movie magnum opus. On paper, transitioning from live action, to anime, to live action, most likely sounds jarring as f***. Yet here it is done so elegantly as to not even detach the viewer from the overall story being told. Every aspect of this movie is perfect. The cinematic shots, the directing, the acting, the choreography, the simple yet intriguing story, the music (shout out to RZA & the 5,6,7,8's), the dark humor, the crunchy sound of cereal being stepped on after a child witnesses the murder of her mother in a kitchen, all executed flawlessly, blended together in a movie production symphony that can only be described as lightning in a bottle. This movie is damn near perfect. Pure movie magic. It's right up there with Jaws and Alien. Much like those movies, I could watch this one over and over again and never get bored. It's neat, it's concise, and it knows what it is... yet it's sprawling, it's complex, and it's so many things all at once. It's easily a 10, and easily in my top 10 films of all time. Expand

With its action unmatched as the fight scenes will have you sitting up straight and the story eccentric but driven, the cinematography is in the true iconic Tarantinesque style but a bit choppy at points. The comedy will have you laughing hysterically and the emotion showed through the use of flashbacks and the amazing dialogue that Tarantino is so known for. If you have the free time, then I highly recommend that you watch this film it is definitely worth the watch. Expand

This is just the first half of a long story that did not fit into the standard 2.5 hours of timing. The first part is primarily distinguished by a good tie-up of history, immediately in the first minutes an excellent scene appears. But the first part in the first part was remembered for the magnificently shot scene of the massacre in Japan and the inserts of the anime. Not an anime fan, but only Tarantino could so skillfully insert anime into a feature film. Expand

For clarification: I saw the movie a little later than my friends and colleagues. They praised this movie as masterpiece and because of this I was really hyped for it. In general I say many parts of the movie are masterpieces and these deserve full praise. The final in the House of blue Leaves for example is one of the most awesome movie scenes I have seen and everyone who watched it agrees (=have yet to find anyone who dislikes it). However not everything is that good and Quentin Tarantino agrees as he put the House of Blue Leaves scenes at the climax and not in temporal order as he said the movie would be weaker otherwise (Shown also in the to do list of the bride in one scene if I remember correctly). The movie itself is a mixture from revenge drama, martial arts movie (eastern), action movie, samurai drama and (spaghetti) western featuring also anime sequences. This works actually well. You can feel the love and care that was put in it with a lot of homages. The movie starts with a woman in a wedding dress just called the bride laying wounded in a chapel (I think her name is not even mentioned in part 1 or I missed it). An assassin team just killed everyone except her when the leader of the team Bill shoots her in the head. Years later she reawakens from coma and will go on a vendetta against her tormentors. This is the start of a unique revenge story with lot of style. The story is engaging and the characters enhance the experience. The fights are masterfully crafted and never fail to deliver. The humor works well in this movie be it a parody like form or the truly black one. There are also countless references and homages in this movie and I am fairly certain that I missed a lot too. To shorten it: Alone from this I am hyped to rewatch it. Lets go to the awesome cast. We have Uma Thurman as the bride and I say this is a flawless performance. Lucy Liu as O-Ren Ishii is also a highlight of the movie and delivers an awesome final. David Carradine as Bill is the type of bad guy the viewers love and also the ladies (I am not sure if he is even fully shown in part 1). Vivica Fox as Vernita Green has only a shorter appearance but fully delivers in it. Daryl Hannah is a character you love to hate and I say she is the one with the smartest approach for the bride (called of). For the rest of the cast I say they have a great cast even for the smaller roles. In this regard there is no misstep. I must also praise the style and visuals. A lot of care was made by Quentin Tarantino and he had clear ideas and visions. By this we are clearly at a 10/10 description. However there are a few flaws. Not all parts are good and the movie takes a while to gain momentum and a very few times it is to over the top for me. I think it is maybe just me and I had to high expectations. In general this is an awesome movie and I think I give a total bonus point for style, characters, presentation and the House of blue Leaves climax. I think I own everyone a warning as volume 2 is weaker for me. I also think that it is not the best Tarantino movie as Inglourious Basterds and the classic Pulp Fiction are better while I still have to watch Reservoir Dogs and Once upon a time in Hollywood. Tarantino places us in a seemingly simpleKill Bill Vol 1 was a deviation from the films that Tarantino had been making up to this point. This film is not a piece of crime cinema about some elaborate heist, but rather a pure action movie. Tarantino places us in a seemingly simple revenge story, but due to the stellar performances of his actors and the non-linear story-telling structure that he has arranged, he is able to create a piece that feels unique compared to any other action movie that I have seen.

This movie certainly feels like a part 1 of a great story (as it is obviously meant to be), but it comes to a fitting enough conclusion and has enough of the puzzle pieces to make this film feel like it can stand on its own. Thurman's performance is fantastic throughout. Other highlights include Lucy Liu as O-Ren Ishii and Sunny Chiba as Hattori Hanzo. Overall, it is very clear that Tarantino set out to capture the mood of a classic kung-fu movie and for the most part I believe that he succeeds. The fight scenes in this film are fantastic and his choice of music is nothing short of iconic. The violence in this film at times feels a tad bit over the top, but that only adds to its charm. However, I will note that this film is not for the feint of heart. If you cannot tolerate the site of blood, this is not the film for you. On its own, this film lacks many of the twists and turns that highlight its successor, however, in total, this film still has a plot that is just complex enough to keep one interested. Don't be fooled though, this half of the two-part Kill Bill saga is far more action/violence first, plot second.

This movie is thoroughly entertaining and contains many brilliant aspects, but at the same time, it doesn't do enough that is revolutionary or completely stellar to warrant a higher score. Overall, if you are a fan of action movies, revenge flicks, kung-fu movies, the grindhouse genre, Uma Thurman, or Tarantino, you will enjoy this movie. What's more likely is that if you are a fan of any of those, you have already seen this.

Kill Bill Vol. 1

Tarantino lyricizes violence in a groovy rhythm. You'd have to have a strong willpower to not cave into his admittedly derived and catchy style. The writer and director Quentin Tarantino is honoring B grade films. In this phase of his filmography, he, with his multiple times collaborator Robert Rodriguez were just goofing around and securing their childhood memories. Tarantino loves those comic book films, not the superhero ones, but the more simple, revenge based commercial cinema that gives its viewers a cathartic release on a weekend after they are pinned down by the entire world. But this "escaping from reality" film and the aficionado puppeteering this bloodbath show shouldn't be taken lightly.

Grounding the most elaborative action sequences is Tarantino's finest mythological speech soldering the entire activity. In fact, Django Unchained, which is also created with keeping these very comic book stories in mind, doesn't ever fully circles back to that "wham", "bam" or "pow". In this note, Kill Bill (Vol. 1) succeeds majorly. For instance, despite having three dimensional characters and complex "he says, she says" storytelling, the narrator keeps us in check and up to date with all the tracks zooming in front of you.

Also, every single character is given a proper introduction, a stylish survey and slick one liners or quality to boast off. Take Lucy Liu's storyline for a moment. If she is described, when she is described, the character isn't bogged down by one emotion and isn't showcased like a bad guy. If she assassinated a president, then he isn't portrayed good enough for you to remove yourself apart from her. This is how Tarantino keeps in touch with his audience. He understands what the viewers might feel and would like to feel while going through an array of colorful destruction.

Expand

For me, it's Tarantino's best movie. I never understood why some people dislike this film... Performances, cinematography, choreography of the fights, action sequences, dialogue, music... all perfect! It even contains a manga anime sequence on it which I found very artistic. Also, I loved splatter and camera tricks. It is very impressive and the plot is really interesting and touching at some point. Last but not least, I can say Uma Thurman totally rocked on there! Her best role out of her career without a doubt! Lucy Liu was also very good as the main villain. My favorite scene was Uma Thurman vs Lucy Liu fight. Really breathtaking! Overall, a flawless perfect film that really deserves its good ratings and critics. It becomes even better along with Vol. 2 because it focuses more on the story and characters, but Vol. 2 is not as strong and badass as this one. Expand

The story seems pretty bare bones, but I really like it. Cause on the surface it just seems like a revenge story for Uma Thurman's character. But it expands upon her journey hunting down these assassins in so many ways. Some of the assassins even get backstories. More in volume 2, but the Japanese assassin gets a beautifully animated backstory which perfectly everything we need to know about the character. One thing I love about the movie is the beautiful soundtrack, especially in the China portion of the film. The soundtrack sounds like it was composed by Nobuo Uematsu himself. It's magnificent. The acting is also good too. Uma Thurman absolutely nails her character as (like I said earlier) a mother trying to get revenge. She has the caring, charming mentality of a mother. But the cold blooded, bad ass nature of an assassin. everyone else is good too, but you don't really see much of any other characters. The characters get a lot more fleshed out in volume 2. But my absolute favorite film about this film, is the fights, and the fight choreography. It is **** brutal. Every single fight scene is fun to watch. Every time there was a fight I had a **** eating grin on my face. Hell! This movie opens on a fight, and its amazing. In the fights Uma Thurman will be doing 20 flips, spinning on the floor, swinging her sword around in loops like a god damn industrial fan. I absolutely love the fights. The scene in Tokyo where "The Bride" has to fight the Crazy 88 is splendid, just a magnificent scene. I love how the filter cuts to black and white, like its an old Japanese karate movie. I just love it. I honestly just really like Kill Bill Vol.1 and Vol.2 for completely different reasons. This movie for the breathtaking fight scenes, and Volume 2 for its brilliant dialogue. Kill Bill Volume 1 & 2 are some of Tarantino's best. Okay. Just go watch them ya **** idiot. They're really good. They make my dick rock hard! 9 outta 10. Expand

Violence , mutilation and absurd amount of blood is really shocking and sometimes even funny, which is markablest thing in this pic, and it's very well directed too. You could watch the brutal fight scenes all day long and still not get bored of the spewing blood from a clean samurai sword cut, or the high flying kung fu. The fourth movie by Quentin Tarantino, Kill Bill is an absolute success, it is an amazing blood-thirsty, action-packed, brutal revenge movie. The use of the chapter feature was a great feature to add to this movie, as it keeps the viewer engaged in what will happen in that chapter of the movie. The unforgettable performance by Uma Thurman is absolutely spectacular as The Bride and truly a monumental movie in Tarantino and Thurman's careers. After just finishing watching it, I can't wait to watch Volume 2 of the Bride's epic tale. This movie contains what any good movie lover wants, great directing, great acting, great story, great characters, engaging plot, etc. If you did not like this movie, there must be something wrong with you. In this film, the first of two, the Bride, betrayed and abandoned to die by her groom, Bill, get her revenge route. Directed and written by Quentin Tarantino, the film stars Uma Thurman and David Carradine.

This is a film that can be good, but definitely is not for me. I like some of Tarantino's films, but definitely I cannot understand this one.

The performance of the actors is regular, the special, visual and sound effects are very good and the soundtrack, given the circumstances, is interesting. The main problem of this film is the non-linear narrative. This option simply does not fit in the film and makes it more confusing than it would be in a conventional narrative. Its an artistic resource, undoubtedly innovative, but that should be used when not hinder the understanding of the public. The public has to understand the movie, and it does not happen here. A person who knows nothing about this film, which has never read anything about it, don't understand it, and discards it.

The film's screenplay is interesting, although it has been virtually copied from another movie ("Lady Snowblood"). But despite the basic idea is good (the bride betrayed by her groom, abandoned and nearly murdered in his own marriage), the way the film develops it is quite negative. First of all, the film doesn't explain Bill's reasons. Surely he didn't wake up that day with a sudden urge to kill the bride, and this lack of rational explanation makes the situation far-fetched. Another problem of this film is the illogical manner it displays and mixes raw action scenes, western scenes or Japanese scenes. From a certain point, the film seems made with pieces of film found in a garbage dump. There is no logic in the way the film shows it.

So before reading this, I consider Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2 as one long epic. Quentin Tarantino's first attempt at an R rated blood spectacle went very well. I consider this movie after Pulp Fiction to be Quentin's best work. And the passion he has for directing shows in this awesome long movie. 4 hours of developed story and well choreographed action scenes. Quentin has such a unique style which I like so very much. I don't see why anyone (except for the Romance lovers out there) wouldn't like this movie.

Quentin Tarantino makes a wonderful film about Beatrix Kiddo has a death list and is following it after a massacre at her practice wedding involves the people on the list: Bill(her ex-boyfriend), O-Ren, Budd, Elle, and Vernita. The only problem is that this is only the first half of this adventure. But it's still enjoyable. Expand

The simple focus on basic film-and storytelling is humongous -- it’s so stylish! We follow this, from what it looks like in the beginning; an unknown character -- and it takes time to fully understand her. And that specific wait for understanding is rewarded the longer you wait. It’s a pure revenge story that’s full of twists, blood, action & originality in many different forms – all in a stylish and ambitious way. The film got a very great inside to the antagonist, & just the fact that the film is aware of the sometimes very forced moments – well that’s just hilarious! Sure it might not be a very dialog-driven film, and it does lack character depth & development. But ‘Kill Bill’ is still one of Tarantino’s finest.

Uma Thurman stars as a bruised and beaten woman known simply as ‘The Bride’, who is betrayed on her wedding day by her colleagues, a group of dangerous individuals known as the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, led by Bill (David Carradine).
When they underestimate The Brides will to live, she eventually awakens from a coma and seeks revenge on those who wronged her, and as the opening quote on the screen suggests, “Revenge is a dish best served cold”, and this woman has nothing but cold and calculated on her mind.
Tarantino has told the story in a non-linear fashion, using chapters to split up the story, and incorporating various flashbacks of how exactly the wedding scenario played out. But in regards to the bride, she sets off by making a list of those who portrayed her, and its clear from the beginning that this film was always going to be building to something bigger, does it take anything away from the film? Perhaps a little, it certainly stands on its own two feet, but the fact remains that we are introduced to these various characters but only get a handful of them. Saying that, however, the scenes with these particular members of the Deadly Viper group are fantastically gory, anime and exaggerated tone that only Tarantino is capable of pulling off with such gritty means.
Uma Thurman’s ‘Bride’ is typically cold and in a particular mindset for the film, she delivers her kills with little mercy, perfectly portrayed by Thurman herself, who shows her willingness to throw herself into any role, a junkie in Pulp Fiction and now a deadly assassin.
The final moments of the film, and the build up are quite remarkable. Tarantino utilises his devices including typical Japanese slashers and even Spagetti Westerns to culminate in a massively colourful fight scene, but the final confrontation between the Bride and O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu is a beautifully crafted scene, and a true powerhouse in filmmaking.
For what it lacks in finalising a story, Kill Bill Vol. 1 certainly makes up for in its unique ability to combine visually striking scenes of blood splattered marvel, and Tarantino is truly at his best.

While it worked well in Pulp Fiction, I think Kill Bill could have been arranged differently, in an order that's a bit more satisfying. Or at least an order that would balance well with Volume 2.

Other than that, it's well choreographed, well acted, directed, beautifully shot revenge tale. Paying great tribute to many different genres and filmmakers (the homage to Brian De Palma in the hospital scene is particularly nice) the film is very entertaining, though it's unconventional presentation and over-the-top violence could turn some away.

I think things could have been done to make it better, but Tarantino's passion for film will transcend to any audience member who shares that passion.

The scenes were so well staged, however, the music so in sync and the interspersed humor so enjoyable that I cannot say the gore ruined it for me. However, I think there could have been a tad less.

Certainly no shortage of flair and panache, Volume 1 is a super-violent tale of betrayal and revenge. By no means Tarantino's finest work, but you'll be entertained.

Kill Bill Volume 1 is very good, but it's the most bizarre Quentin Tarantino movie because of the stylized Japanese samurai moves, but besides that it's a very good film, way better than the second volume.

The overdone gore surprisingly worked out well with Quentin Tarantino at is best yet again and delivers a vengeful roller coaster right up till the end.

I personally liked it, but it didn't need all that cheesy violence, but Quentin Tarrintino is still awesome. This movie had some cheesy action scenes but is carried by fine acting and nice character development.

Kill Bill: Vol. 1 is not complicated. It's about a woman going on a revenge driven rampage. Honestly, that's all I ever needed in a movie.

This movie is so stylish and so fun to watch that you forget its lack of depth. I can honestly say that I was never once bored the whole time watching this movie.
Also, that ending fight scene was amazing.
This is just Tarantino being Tarantino. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Yes, the blood is very much over-the-top, but my God it is just so beautiful filmed I cannot even be bothered by it. Plus, it is absolutely hilarious the way in which some people die in this film. In addition, the battle sequences are 100% gorgeous. The choreography is amazing and thought out. In the lead role, Uma Thurman is perfectly cast and absolutely kills (heh) her role. On the negative side of things, the dialogue can become a tad cheesy at times and make you roll your eyes that they decided to go with that line. On top of that, the violence, while stylish, can be numbing and the death scenes repeat themselves (i.e. many characters die in the same exact way and you see a similar shot of their death). Finally, the weird anime sequence as we got a character's back story was a turn off for me. It just made the film feel disjointed and felt like a very weird turn that was not really necessary.

Overall, Kill Bill: Vol. 1 is a pretty good film. However, as it is simply half of the final product, it does feel unfinished, so you have to take the fact that it is intended to be the first half of the film into account, which is why I do like this one as much as I do. As a lead-in to the second film, it is very successful as I was left with a burning desire to watch part two almost immediately after finishing this one.

Tarantino is an incredible filmmaker, but his prestige advanced beyond great screenwriting into great direction for this film. A stylized revenge flick is what it is, so to take it as more than that is ludicrous, and for what it is it is nearly perfect. I do not believe Tarantino intended to create the greatest film of all time, I believe that he intended to create an entertaining movie that combines his favorite genres, and it works. The acting, the screenplay, the direction, and the countless homages to kung fu, spaghetti western, and exploitation movies make it a massively entertaining watch. Expand

Super violent, with great visual style and one heck of an ending. Tarantino delivers by blending genres perfectly, but jeez, he definitely has a thing for feet.
