I give this an 8 because it's clever, attractive, and unexpected. 2 point deduction for Page's acting. I don't think she would be so cool with being pregnant =o But I H I G H L Y recommend this! Rent it or watch it online free.

Juno is outstandingly scripted, wonderfully acted, and despite narrating a rather slow-paced story, it touches on appropriately compelling notes with the right yet subtle amount of poignance, passion and power.

THE WORLD and SUPERBAD, JUNO is a ridiculously funny comedy about an unplanned teen pregnancy. When I rented it, even though it was nominated for a few Oscars and was highly praised review-wise, I feared that it would be an "indie" twist on the usual dumb-humor farce; but it's extremely simple to say that that's not at all what this was. It was an amazing blend of controversy and laughs that, quite surprisingly, weren't from raunchiness or crudeness, but rather from the cleverness of the plot and sub-plots altogether. Expand

Ellen Page stars as the titular Juno MacGuff, who becomes pregnant after, well, having sex. She could be termed quirky and is a bit of a wiseass -- especially for someone who forgets basic biology -- but the performance makes her disarmingly likable. Juno of course decides to have the baby and to then give it up for adoption, and the film follows her through the remaining course of her pregnancy. Director Jason Reitman's previous Thank You for Smoking was justly praised, and here he has created an equally enjoyable experience. Diablo Cody's script is perhaps a little too self conscious -- would anyone ever use the phrase "honest to blog"? -- but she shows a knack for creating memorable characters with occasionally humorous dialogue. The proceedings are definitely aided by a talented cast. Michael Cera shines here with his unique meek charm as the, um, baby-daddy. J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney have excellent bit parts as Juno's father and stepmother. However the majority of the acting credit must go to both Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner as the potential adoptive parents, and who provide valid dramatic counterpoints to the otherwise sweet comedy in the foreground. Though the self-congratulatory wittiness may grate some and the twee-filled soundtrack may prove taxing to others -- plenty may fall into both categories -- Juno ends up coming together nicely on just about every level. Ellen Page is a shining star here in a powerhouse performance where she truly commands the screen. Michael Cera is his typical hilariously awkward self here, while J.K. Simmons would have had my favorite performance here, if not for Page's turn in the lead role. The writing is very strong and some of the exchanges here were absolutely hilarious. The characters all also very well-written and feel like authentic 16 year olds. The direction from Jason Reitman is also very good and the story is very well told here. The title sequence was also one of the coolest I have seen. I usually do not notice that too much, but here, it was really well done and the music was perfect for it. Finally, I typically do not find comedies that funny for whatever reason, but here, I was laughing quite often. The film was a great blend of drama and comedy and it was refreshing for me to find a film that I found to be 50/50 in that regard, rather than a dramedy that never really makes me laugh. Overall, really authentic coming of age film that strikes a chord without question. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Juno is one of the best independent films ever. It really has a story that you really wouldn't expect to be that unique but it is so innovative. You don't have to be a hipster to love Juno but it may help. Ellen Page is outstanding in this film and its unfortunate that she didn't really get a real chance to be a comedy star like she was in this film. She is really funny and the character suits her so well.

Beside Page you have several note worthy names like Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman and JK Simmons. The whole cast is great but Diablo Cody's script is as much the star as anyone in the film. The story avoids clichés and there are so many moments where the dialogue is exceptional which explains why this movie won an Oscar for its screenplay.

The only issue that I have with Juno is Jason Bateman's absence in during the ending. I'm not always a big fan of Jason Bateman but he was so good in this movie and he avoided falling into the same character that he always plays but he was still super likeable despite deserting his wife right before they are going to adopt a baby. Bateman's character left pretty late in the film and I wasn't expecting him to kiss and make up but I think he should have at least been involved in the film's ending. Juno is still great though and I can't believe I waited so long to watch it.

While it's true that there are too sophisticated dialogues and Juno is not the most attractive or pleasant protagonist, most of the situations are credible and functional and the best thing of all is that the film really followed the voice of its main character and avoided any kind of moralistic comment on teenage pregnancy.

Juno is simply the story of a 16-year-old pregnant woman facing the situation in the best way she found. That is refreshing and not always achieved.

And, man, the screenplay really does transfer to the screen perfectly. Everyone looked and acted like I imagined, and the vibe of the movie is the exact same as the screenplay, which doesn't always happen with movies. The dialogue is amusing even when characters are having a normal conversation purely because of Diablo Cody's unique writing style. It's hard to imagine a group of real life people actually talking like her characters, but she makes it believable in the world that she created. It's a simple story but an enjoyable one, and I feel like I could watch this movie any day of the week and have a good time. Expand

The dialogue is is clever and jangles along well enough to keep you entertained and amused throughout, but at the end of the day it didn't really make me particularly care about the movie. On the other hand, this movie is far from horrible. The dialogue IS witty, and the acting is solid for the most part (especially the younger actors) so I have a hard time understanding why anyone out there would hate it. No the dialogue may not be "realistic", but this is a MOVIE, not a court deposition. If you are that hung up on realism and making sure a movie you better stick to documentaries, so shut up already. Guess what, this isn't exactly art house avant garde, so get over yourselves. Ironically, I'm sure half the people who hate this probably loved Napoleon Dynamite. Expand

The individual parts of the film are mostly solid. The actors were all great. the cinematography could have used some sparkle/more movement but the camera placement was good if unimaginative. The soundtrack and use of licensed music were both excellent. The one major complaint I have is with the dialogue. It's well-written and extremely witty, but it does not mesh well with the pacing of the film, which is fast and spontaneous. Realistically someone could not spew forth such brilliantly constructed, well-crafted prose while thinking on their feet. The screenwriters also unsuccessfully tried to incorporate slang into the mix, and it ends up sounding tacked-on and forced, even with the actors giving it their all to make it sound natural. In the end, JUNO is a good but unspectacular film which, while still enjoyable, is somewhat overhyped. Expand

Now, I've heard a lot of good buzz about "Juno" since it's 2007 release, and I've been rather excited to finally see it. First off, I can say that the film itself is pretty good. I enjoyed most of the aspects of it. The acting on all fronts is great. Ellen Page is hilarious as the titular character, and Michael Cera is equally as funny as her awkward friend. The facet of the movie that I admired the most was the film's brilliant, Academy Award-Winning script written by Diablo Cody. I found every line in this movie to be delightfully unique, and Cody's use of modern dialogue devices really helps to give this movie a certain authenticity. Although this movie is labelled a comedy, I found it to be more of a heartfelt drama love story - especially towards the end. Overall, I felt that "Juno" was a very sweet addition to the comedy genre. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Jason Reitman's Juno is a love letter to teenage pregnancy and motherhood, and as a result, a heartfelt piece that will surely tug some heartstrings, whether you're a teenager or an adult. The music was exceptionally significant and captured the mood of the film: cool, calm, and moody. The cinematography was ordinary, and the editing was not bad, although sometimes jumpy, considering the length of the film, I'd say it was pretty okay. The acting was also amazing, especially Garner, Bateman, and of course, Page, who captivates the viewers with her witty and charming appeal. The only problem I had was Michael Cera. Sometimes, it just feels like he does not belong in the film, and it could probably do well without him. And of course, the coherence of the story. There were a lot of unnecessary scenes and characters that ought to be deleted out of the film, which only adds up to a fair convoluted-ness of the plot. Sometimes, the film does not know what it is. A love story? A family story? A story of motherhood? A story of a couple falling apart? The list goes on. However, it all adds up beautifully in the end, despite its apparent flaws. Expand

Then at 7 i went to the multiplex to see Juno at a packed house filled with recently pubescent kids with their dates that watched the film as they struggled in an attempt to touch each other. I was expecting to love the film but was filled with the cognitive dissonance of paying ten dollars for a film that i was constantly battling with. A film that you like will suck you in so that your mental chatter stops leaving you to ponder what is going to happen next if you ponder anything other than the immediate sensations of what the actors are saying at the moment. During the first 15-30 minutes of the film as the masses around me laughed at the punchlines that i interpreted were supposed to be funny and i sat with a blank stare i felt as alien as David Bowie's Spider's from Mars. Thus began a hour and a half long inward debate of why i didn't think this movie was funny. What i found amusing was that the parts i laughed at were the parts that correlated with a relative silence throughout the crowd. People laughed at the set design and general visuals. I thought man, Wes Anderson did a way better job at that and their just trying to mimic him. People laughed at the rapid fire dialogue of ellen page's character and i appreciated that what she was basically saying was funny but comedy, at least in modern day form just doesn't work at that speed. What the character Juno says is in theory funny but compare when Juno talks and when Bateman or Cera's characters talk. Comedy comes from some basis in reality and no one but maybe a genius talks with the amount of elucidation that Juno does off the cuff. The script is good in theory but there is too much there, if they slowed it down and unpacked some of Juno's dialogue the film would be much funnier. Either Reitman, Cody, or Page have no since of comic timing. Also i should add i like to think that i wanted to like this movie, why else would i pay ten dollars to go see it. But the movie just tries so hard to be cool. And Cody's script seems to be trying so hard to prove that she's isn't just a dumb stripper. It makes me think "we know you can write, just tone it down a notch." But maybe seeing the savages earlier threw me off since the two movies take such a different approach to a "tragedy" and turn it into humor. To couple drama with comedy is a difficult thing to do and i just believe the savages pulled it off much better than juno. Come to think of it, knocked up pulled it off a lot better also. But this genius of knocked up is it's extemperaneous feel whereas Juno feels scripted throughout. Expand

Now that the selfcensorship on somewhat positively portrayed abortion has stretched it's vile claws to indie productions as well, we must fear that even a Hillary presidency will lead to an abortion ban in less than 3 years. I've seen over 2500 films and only in one a pregnant woman had an abortion: Holly Hunter in "Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her". And yes, this was of the "You-think-you-can-have-an-abortion-just-like- that-but-you'll-be-sorry-in-the-end" - type. The REAL refreshing, daring and new thing to do would be of course, telling the sensitive, yet funny and touching story of the struggle of a 14 year old getting pregnant and her hilarious but yet heartgripping search for an abortion clinic willing to perform a 20 week abortion. This search could take Ulyssesic(?) dimensions, with sardonical comments by said 14 year old on parents school church clinics doctors and Jehova Witnesses ... But yeah, guess which country would be TOO conservative for that .... I mean, if you can make light of the psychologically damaging experience of giving your kid away to total strangers, why not about the less psychologically damaging experience of abortion? Expand

The people who don't generally see non-mainstream films are the ones who thought Juno was cute, clever, quirky, etc. It was well made, but everything just TRIED too hard. From the soundtrack of the generic "quirky" indie music, to the oh-I'm-so-witty-and-hip dialogue, to the hamburger phone. It just tries too hard! Everything but the performances and direction felt forced. All the scenes, the retorts, the quirky situations-- they were all too calculated, attempting too much to be indie-stylized. The real reason this was nominated for its awards was because it was the only light movie out that people liked enough, and everything else out was much more serious. Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that the Academy needs a non-R rated movie in its Best Picture category, this would not have been nominated. For the truly best indie film of the year, Once is undeniable, though Lars and the Real Girl and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead are excellent choices also. Expand

The entire first half of the film is ludicrous -- hot-screenwriter-of-the-moment Diablo Cody virtually screaming to the audience, "Look, Hollywood, I can write glib hyper-witticisms as well as anybody!" Sitcom-y and self-conscious screenwriting at its absolute worst. The movie actually improved quite a bit in the second half when it got a little more serious and earnest, and the screenplay finally turns down the relentless "snappy" one-liners a bit. I couldn't stand the smarmy, too-cool-for-the-room Juno character throughout, but there are some good supporting bits by the likes of Jason Bateman, Jennifer Garner and Michael Cera that redeem the film somewhat. As usual, the 'burbs are portrayed as a spiritual no-man's-land where all your dreams go to die, and the entire film is soundtracked to the likes of hipster bands like Belle and Sebastian. Talk about right out of Indie Moviemaking 101. What IS interesting is that the film takes a pro-life stance. This is a viewpoint you're not going to see much coming out of Hollywood, so once again I can't completely dismiss the film. But the movie also asks you to believe that this kid's gonna have the baby, give it up for adoption, and simply move on with her life without ever even wondering about the little tyke, who resides in the same zip code. You've got to be kidding me. Juno is this year's "Crash" or "Little Miss Sunshine," i.e. the fraudulent indie film. Why do the critics always fall for these films? Expand

Each one will have their opinion about it and I have mine, but I will keep it to myself, I think this is not the time to talk about it. In any case, the film is neither for nor against. It limits itself to creating a very interesting story around this theme, and the way two young people, clearly unprepared to be parents and who had sex just because of a day of boredom, face the imminent arrival of a baby.

The story is quite good and the script deserved an Oscar, but what stood out the most for me was Ellen Page's superb interpretation. She was an unknown actress until this film and deserved all the recognition she earned. She is simply ultra-convincing in the role of a sixteen-year-old girl, still quite childish in her way of being and thinking, but who is experiencing a moment of maturation by force. I loved the way she spoke using teen slang, and the way her character seems almost unaware of the seriousness of what happened in her life. Michael Cera is also very good, but his character is simply amorphous, he doesn't have half of Juno's sharp and irreverent personality. However, both characters are simply too credible and really look like many teenagers that I have met in my life. Much less credible, for me, was her parents' quiet reaction... most parents would simply have had a heart attack. At that point, the film lost a little bit for me, but maybe it's the difference in cultures that speaks louder.

Technically, the film didn't catch my attention, but I liked the cinematography, the way the film manages to follow the months of pregnancy and give us the perception of the passage of that time and the transformations in the body, life and mentality of young Juno. The sets and costumes are very good, sometimes with some implicit ironic or comic load. The soundtrack is also quite interesting and fits well with the spirit of the film.

Does that make sense? It is immaturity at its worst. Every time Juno opened her clever mouth I just wanted to shove paper towels down her throat so she would shut up. This movie may be inspiring for indie wannabes whose generation has simply missed the boat, but for the rest of us that don't act like they were born in the wrong decade, it is perceived as trashy and irritating. I have to give it a five only because I have to appreciate the acting by Michael Cera (who I think may be in danger of being type cast for the rest of his life), Jennifer Garner, and J.K. Character development on the others is minimal, inconsitent, and largely one dimensional. If you are between 13 and 20 you will likely love the movie. For everyone else, wait for the DVD. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. hmm this movie is probably only interesting to young-older teens. not funny at all! I could see that they tried to be funny but it was more of like a goofy/silly type thing that immature ppl would find funny. the only part i found interesting was the drama between the adopting couple. other than that... eh. I HATE the sarcasm in the movie. I was like HELLO theres a 16 year old girl thats pregnant! does anybody care? its like they make it seem "OK"! the parents didnt seem to be too worried or shocked and the girl seemed like she could care less. If i was her parent i'd be PISSED at the fact that my daughter was having sex at that age knowing the consequences. these parents seem just as irresponsible as their kid. This is NOT the message that we should be sending to teens. and i actually believe the only smart thing this girl did was give the baby up for adoption. that comment the doc said when she was giving the ulrasound saying the teen mother shouldnt raise her baby cause she'd be in a poisonous environment was actually something i'd agree with. plus teens dont know how great it is to have their freedom until they r responsible for the life of a child. I enjoyed the calm and crush aspect Juno herself gained over the Husband, but all in all I kept being overwhelmed with the vocabulary and how unauthentic it seemed. Not something I would tell my daughter to watch for means of entertainment but certainly not because of the not-so-popular theme of teen pregnancy. Ya right. Expand

So disappointing. To the reviewer who said of Juno's inconsistent dialogue - "some people are just that smart" - uh, smart enough to tell a person they know very well is infertile and whose dream in life is to have a baby "you're So disappointing. To the reviewer who said of Juno's inconsistent dialogue - "some people are just that smart" - uh, smart enough to tell a person they know very well is infertile and whose dream in life is to have a baby "you're lucky that you don't have to go through this" ingenuously, after you've supposedly done all this research? I don't think so. Ellen Page did a good job trying to smooth over her character's tonal inconsistencies, but that's a testament to her acting abilities, not the script. The 4 rating is because I want to encourage the development of movies with a female lead character, though of course, it revolves around the one thing people know women are "made to do" - have babies and fall in love with men. The actors are all great -- the scene where Jennifer Garner puts her hands on Juno's belly will move anyone -- but gimme a break, dude. If you want to see a great "quirky fable" movie, see "Waitress." Expand

The whole movie all that happens is the main character Juno gets pregnant from her best friend, and she just talks in slang the whole movie to try to be funny. It was just stupid, don't believe the hype. The dude from Superbad is barely in the movie, and his character is really boring. The movie was really slow and just a waste of time pretty much. Expand

This movie felt contrived, as though Wes Anderson and Jon Heder were forced to spawn some mutant offspring, then force fed it quirky lines, and pasted over any flaws with hip music. I heard the hype, i gagged on it!

Wholly implausible, overly written, hipster-wannabe Industry calling-card script flatly directed.

No other movie would be shown that kind of charity, That's not all: Juno is wholly unlikable, the faux-Indie motifs are a big joke, the music is overbearing, and the character and plot development nonexistent. This movie is total trash and we can only hope that in time, more will come to agree with this assessment. Expand

This movie tried way too hard to be witty. If you just took out all that stupid annoying slang, it would be just a boring movie. Although mildly entertaining, Michael Cera was alright, the plot was not complex or thought provoking at all. This movie tried way too hard to be witty. Simmons and Allison Janney as the parents and that's about it. Expand

I think it's just childish to insult others for their opinion on a review site (LET ME TELL YOU WHY I'M RIGHT AND YOU'RE NOT). Everyone has different tastes, just give your output and don't insult. Everyone has different tastes, just give your output and don't insult. That doesn't help ANYONE. Those comments aside, I disliked Juno. The premise is untapped and fresh, the cast are all in their prime, and it's produced by fox searchlight. It had the makings of a fantastic flick, but failed miserably in the script writing. I actually think Diablo Cody masturbated to the script while writing it, in the way he blatantly force-feeds cool. The unlikeable character Juno alone ruined the movie for me, every scene where she was meant to "stick it to the man", she comes off looking like a snooty, self-serving, preggie bitch. Expand

By no means Oscar worthy, Juno is a contrived attempt at recreating what made films like Little Miss Sunshine and The Royal Tenenbaums great.
