I also believe that the recent uptick in Joker haters is violently unwarranted. When I saw Joker for the first time, I walked out of the theater thinking, "That's got to be one of my favorite movies I've ever seen." I still thoroughly enjoy the film, but I find myself slowly falling out of love with this movie. Believe me, I still think it is a fantastic film. However, I feel that Joker is slowly falling into obscurity as a niche film. I don't see it as a Joker movie, but more a story of mental illness in an unforgiving world. Truly a fantastic movie, and I'm hoping the sequel brings the story back into the spotlight. Expand

ThisPhoenix's performance is incredible but it's wasted on this fake deep and immature movie. It's seems irresponsible to handle such weighty topics as mental illness, class warfare and domestic terrorism with an approach this fake deep. This feels like a treatise on anarchism written by a high schooler. Many people are calling it one note and it's true that it is one long minor chord. But it's also tonally inconsistent with itself. Violence is handled with ultra-realism. Everything else is distorted into a melancholy comic book-like sepia to the point that life has no grace notes and everything is dirty and cloudy. You could make the case that that's a representation of the Joker's mental state – he repeatedly says in the film that he's never experienced a good moment in his life. But does that even make sense? If all of his feelings are sour, then that's his baseline. How does he qualify experience as negative if he has nothing better to compare it to? Expand

"Wired" wrote it is "useful for teaching young people who Travis Bickle is". But is it so necessary to know "Taxi Driver"? And then is this "Joker" reducible to a remake only of that movie or of "The King of Comedy" (1983)? If anything, it's a Scorsesian roundup in which minor works are often better than major ones, and Todd Phillips is adept at paying homage also to the first ones, from the sequences on the stairs of "New York, New York" (1977) to the ambulances of "Bringing Out the Dead" (1999). It's a film that flows fast, but that is so much a merit as a defect: for example, there is no serious deepening of the (bidirectional?) link between psychic discomfort and social unease, a "praise of folly" more exhibited than explained, or of the problematic integration of subjectivity into the Warholian world of entertainment (and in fact the failed seminarian dedicated an entire film to each of these aspects). In short, it lets itself be seen, often even to its detriment. And I would have left the invasion of mice at the Camus of "La Peste" (1947).

Joker follows a mentally diseased man named Arthur Fleck who works in a part time job as a clown and wants to become a stand up comedian.
His mental disease causes him an uncontrollable laughter that makes him look bad to the audience and ruin his jokes, stopping him from being a stand up comedian.
He gets fired for a certain reason and more bad stuff happen in the proccess.
In order to stop this tragedy, Arthur embraces his madness and decides to put an end to everything that harmed him for so long.
Now... I want to keep my thoughts as brief as I can.
The story was decent! It showed every single detail of Arthur's transformation and made it as engaging as possible.
The performances were among the best I've ever seen, especially from Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro.
There were plenty of impressive moments, and the music and the cinematography were amazing as well!
The only bad thing I have to say about this film is that it leaves more Joker sequences to be desired; the pacing feels slow.

Pros:
+ Interesting story
+ Phenomenal performance
+ Beautiful cinematography and music

Cons:
- Pacing issues

Narrative: 7/10
Performances: 10/10
Score: 9/10

Final Rating: 8.5/10
- Amazing -
I am not a movie enthusiast, but Joker was worth it and I'm excited for a possible sequel.

Do I recommend it?:
Go watch it! Highly recommended!

Amazing movie that finally isn't afraid of asking questions and showing the parts of a villains story we all wanted to see for the past 20 years.
In this movie, you can actually relate to the tragic story of the Joker and it dosen't shy away from showing, that maybe society itself and all of the aholes living in it is to blame for creating some of the psychopaths.

The fact that critics (aka Hollywoke shills) and SJW in general dislike this movie should be enough reason for you to watch this.
This movie is what's missing in modern Hollywood. A real, down to earth movie with real, down to earth topics.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've given this movie a 3 for the three good things about it: It rightfully killed the run of the stupid Jared Leto Joker. Phoenix's performance is excellent. The film is "well-made," but this is not a movie of substance. The movie is not a good talking point for mental health. The movie is not a good start for a discussion on society, rich vs. poor, etc. This is a stylized empty film that looks like many better Scorsese films but has an outline instead of a plot. It made money because it has a tangential relation to the DC universe. It really feels like these Batman references were added later to sell the movie. The movie would be basically the same with these elements removed. At least with the Batman attachment Bill Finger will get credit and money will finally go to his estate.

This movie alludes to things like the Goetz shooting but removes the element of race from it, which is one of its most important factors. That is typical of this movie, it superficially brings up issues to justify the violence. This movie brings up the need for better treatment for the mentally ill but by using the abuse of the mentally ill as the justification for the Joker's actions, it does a disservice to the mentally ill. Most violent crimes are not committed by the mentally ill but if we delve into these any of these issues then it would be harder to convince the audience to sympathize with Arthur Fleck once he becomes a mass murderer with no remorse. The movie is inviting us to be comfortable with the villain and root for him. There are many movies that make for an uncomfortable experience. They depict relentless cruelty and depravity. You don't feel comfortable at the end credits. But Joker does that and that alone. It's a shallow take on society and how it fails people with a little "Batman" thrown in. When the movie shows that Fleck is a completely unreliable narrator the audience has to question how much is real and how is in much is in Fleck's head. Leaving everything ambiguous is great for covering up many plot holes and looking profound. "Joker" is a sleek veneer of a picture made to look arty. That's all. But it won two Oscars and made over a billion dollars. A sequel will be out soon. So for most, the end justifies the means.

Truly a masterpiece, The Best Hollywood film of 2019, one of the Best films of the decade... And truly the Best film to bring a comic book so chillingly and realistically to real ife. Remarkable Direction, Cinematography, Music and the Acting. Some people are surprised to find it DISTURBING and VIOLENT, but it's a necessity and message. It's about society and reflects those underappreciated/unrecognized/bullied people, proving they can do something too. The way it shows class difference, corruption and how rich and talented rule others around them is not exaggerated and that's what makes it different. It's BELIEVABLE. There could be multiple JOKERs living in our society that could shake those around them in much bitter way than the film shows making people uncomforting people. Consider this a wake up call, a message, but first a film. A PERFECT film.

This film was ahead of it's time, and many would not get it unless they have been deprogrammed.

It's also plays on wrongthink... you almost feel as if everything wrong in your life can be solved by living through the Joker. Somebody says something stupid that you don't agree with? Laugh at them.

There hasn't been a successful villain/anti-hero film since Taxi Driver.

Unfortunately this isn't just an origin story. 2019 joker is a Scorsese-ian quick paced masterpiece. It's deliberate script and demure violent tone seeks to get down to the depth of it's namesake villain. A carefully crafted descent into madness in a society already in the throes of exploitive capitalist violence gives the most chilling depiction of the joker since the charater consumed Heath Ledger. Joaquin Phoenix delivers an unhinged performance as the anti social traumatized Arthur who disenchanted with his life aspires to notoriety despite his own mediocrity. Following a succession of increasingly dispiriting events he begins to unravel just as the world around him burst open in unchecked anarchy . This movie is brilliant but as has been seen in similar art with white male protagonists who face mental illness whilst dealing with toxic masculinity, it has become canonized by the very audience it seeks to critique. Labeled a "dude bro, female manipulator, white supremacist " film isn't to far fetched. That might not be said by the films story itself but is a medium, through Arthur's self pitying isolation ,for their own failures. I do think the aforementioned consequence though further proves the films violent accuracy, just as Midsommar showed how easy it was to be brainwashed into a cult the joker shows us how easy it is to use trauma/mental illness to justify hurting other's. And that the joker shouldn't be admired or as his name suggests laughed at. But should instead be feared as his creation isn't fiction and instead manifests daily in the firm of school shooters, incels, misogynists and misanthropes. It's a warning, not a joke. Expand

Not Just artificial but only full of boring tallks from batman the killing joke
Toxic movies that I hate forever I really believe that films like this harm not only the cinema but also our world First of all, it was the only DC movie I've seen that tried its best for the weaving philosophy. I'm sure many people know that this movie is an exaggerated movie, but what's worth noting is that not only the hero of the film does not understand classic comedy movie but chooses a bad movie to get emotional. Because that movie has nothing to do with his world. No matter how hard the movie tries, it can't get anything out of itself, especially by taking the acting from the lead role. A film in which there is no violence, but it tries to use it with fear. A film that is not only artificial but also does not any style...acting??!! And only talks boringly. Apparently, after years of increasing Joker appeal, the no-Batman-no-joke-and-no-even-hope-of--killing-joke pattern has become the norm.

But what we have is a movie about a victimized person who puts his shame out there for the world to laugh at, and we're suppose to stand with him. I don't think the approach to the character was all that integral, but what holds up is Joaquin Phoenix's graceful performance. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Joaquin Phoenix is a brilliant actor in Joker, completely submerging himself into his role as Arthur Fleck. Beautiful portrayal of this character and the plot being open to multiple possibilities and interpretations makes the plot all the more thought-provoking and interesting. Fantastic movie that carries many parallels and significance to today's systems/societies. Expand

Joker: “If it was up to me I prefer my life to be, multiple choice.” Batman The Killing Joke, that has to be the most famous Joker quotes of all time and I prefer the origin to be this not being dropped into acid. I’m getting this off hereJoker: “If it was up to me I prefer my life to be, multiple choice.” Batman The Killing Joke, that has to be the most famous Joker quotes of all time and I prefer the origin to be this not being dropped into acid. I’m getting this off here BUY THIS MOVIE RIGHT NOW. Ok getting that out I’m going to start here the music is so damn good, it’s so atmospheric and makes you believe that you are in Gotham. The cinematography just God man, the way this movie is shot is so beautiful the way the colors are amazing. Now the elephant in the room Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic he is Arthur Fleck and he is so so so so so so so good, just how committed this man is to playing the Joker is amazing he lost a little over 50 pounds, he researched the iconic laugh which is amazing. People who have played Joker in the past have gone mad going back to Heath Ledger he died after the movie came out, Joaquin almost went crazy because of everything he did. I can’t give this movie enough praise Todd Phillips was best known as the director of the Hangover movies which are comedy’s and directs the best character study I have ever seen. When I first saw the first trailer I thought it was going to suck, then the second trailer came out and I wanted to see it, reviews came out hearing that the movie got a 7 minute standing ovation is crazy then seeing the film for myself I now understand it’s worth it. Just buy this movie right now it’s so worth your money. Expand

Joaquin Phoenix elevates an underwritten character with a strong showcase performance in this surprisingly hollow and toothless film. Joker works neither as a character study of a sociopath, nor as an adaptation of the classic Batman arch-nemesis.

Maybe he wanted to ruin our happy memories with Master Heath Ledger... A dull narrative that even hurts the enthusiasm of the audience! ... The only positive point of the movie is the relatively good Wakin Phoenix game, which in my opinion is not worth it in the face of thousands of negative points! Alas, I live in a world where the Joker is the pamphlet of the top 250 movies in history and people who know nothing about cinema have revealed this calamity! ... Finally, I want to say that it is better to know the meaning of cinema and not make a masterpiece from the garbage of cinema! Expand

Fortunately for us, this time it did happen, and how breathtaking was the ride. Many could start by praising Joaquin Phoenix's astonishing acting, the delicious screenwriting, the destroying cinematography, or the exquisite soundtrack that comes with it. It's all of the above at once, playing with our emotions as we slowly ascend to the deepest of depressions with the character. hard carried by lead actors acting. we need an advanced ai that can replace any actor with a different one who has various different possible interpretations of the character, while keeping all else the same, then we would see really if the movie is good or an actor hard carried film. this btw might sound crazy but its much closer than you think, i'd give it at most 20 years till this ai is real.

It's nice to get such a refreshing stand-alone movie that breaks free from the typical superhero formula and isn't tied to a cinematic universe. This doesn't feel like a superhero movie at all; it's a deep character study and a cautionary tragic tale of a man pushed to madness via nature and nurture; it just happens to be set in Gotham around arguably comic's most iconic villain. Phoenix is unbelievable and completely disappears into the role (an Oscar-worthy performance). The cinematography and tone of the movie is great and harkens back to the Scorsese films of the 80s. If you're expecting a superhero action movie this may not be for you. Approach it with an open mind and you'll love it. Masterpiece. Expand
