Funny, heart warming, and heart rending. The absurd parts of the movie fit well with the fact that we experience them through a child's eye. Some of the absurd stuff even mirrors the absurdity of the real life events.

Everyone of my friends from a diverse spectrum has enjoy this movie; there's a little something for everyone here. I got to the end wishing it was another hour longer.

Its humor comes mostly from great timing rather than perfectly set up jokes. The twists are almost predictable, and yet, I couldn't guess exactly. These aren't quite detracting features, but the movie could have been even more perfect, in my opinion. Still, it's unique and challenging.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Jojo Rabbit (2019)

Sinopsis:

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the best movie that I have seen in all of 2019. It is a rare film that can break your heart and put it back together, again. I don't know if there is an over-abundance of Nazi sympathizers around that cannot grasp the satire, or not. I love this movie as I feel more than anything, it is a redemption story. It may be historical in nature, but it is still a work of fiction. Expand

Jojo Rabbit manages to balance surreal comedy with serious drama to tell a story during WW2 through the eyes of a child. It's not a purposefully sad and depressing movie, like many movies depicting the time period. It depicts life is it was. There was joy, there was sadness, there was anger and there was compassion. Visually the movie is colourful and vibrant, as opposed to dark and dull. The characters are well-written and unique, and will often break the pre-determined notions of fictional characters from that era. The movie has received criticism for not taking the subject matter seriously enough. This type of criticism might be some of the most stupid and down-right dangerous criticism which can be given. This movie tells a story from a well-known time period in a very different way, which is just what is needed. The movie doesn't aim to tell you how bad the nazis were, it assumes you already know this. The movie portrays them in a different way with one purpose in mind: to laugh at them. It helps people understand that authoritarian regimes aren't stopped by anger. They are stopped when everyone stops taking them seriously. The nazis don't deserve the respect to be feared. They deserve to be ridiculed and made to look like the stupid donkeys that they are.

However, even ignoring the purpose and message of the movie, and its social commentary. The movie tells a heartwarming, hilarious and sometimes gut-wrenching story which will take you on a roller coaster of emotions like no other. I'm not going to pretend like everyone will love this movie, but it is a movie everyone should watch and form their own opinion about.

Give it a try.

It opens with real footage of crowds roaringA good movie lets you know what you’re in for right away. A great movie surpasses those expectations. You’ll know within the first ten minutes of Jojo Rabbit whether this film is for you or not. It opens with real footage of crowds roaring ecstatically for Adolf Hitler while a German version of “I Want to Hold Your Hand” plays over the titles. This is how 10-year-old Johannes sees Hitler. In fact, his goofy, encouraging imaginary best friend is none other than Adolf. Any comedy set in Nazi Germany is going to be tricky to say the least, even for a talented filmmaker like writer-director Taika Waititi. In previous films, Waititi has tackled broad, dark comedy (the vampire comedy What We Do In The Shadows) and mixed comedy and sentimental drama (the wonderful Huntfor the Wilderpeople). In Jojo Rabbit, Waititi combines sharp satire, broad comedy, devastating drama, and sincere sentiment with incredible results. Movies like Jojo Rabbit don’t come along too often. This is without a doubt one of the best movies of 2019.

Roman Griffin Davis plays Johannes who is young enough that he believes all of the most awful and absurd antisemitic Nazi propaganda. He wants to be the best Nazi he can be, but doesn’t measure up. Older members of the Hitler Youth nickname him Jojo Rabbit after he can’t bring himself to kill a rabbit. His mother, Rosie (Scarlett Johansson) is raising is him alone—his soldier father is presumed dead, or possibly a deserter—and trying to counteract the hateful propaganda Jojo has been absorbing. She is also secretly sheltering a Jewish girl, Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie), in an upstairs crawlspace. When Jojo discovers Elsa, he knows he can’t turn her in without getting his mother in trouble, so he decides question her about being Jewish to write a book. His initial shock and fright turn to confusion: she has no horns and doesn’t sleep upside down. In fact, she appears to be a normal girl and he develops a crush on her.

Waititi walks a fine line both as a filmmaker, maintaining the film’s dark comic tone, and as an actor, playing the imaginary Adolf. His performance is broad and over the top but it matches what 10-year-old Jojo would conjure up. Scarlett Johansson has earned a Supporting Actress nomination for her role as Jojo’s mother and I think it’s well deserved. Her portrayal of a someone doing all she can to be a good parent and a good person is compelling. Sam Rockwell turns in another good performance as a washed-up Nazi officer that may actually be hiding a sense of decency. In a small but chilling role Stephen Merchant plays a Gestapo officer that comes to investigate Jojo’s house; his thin but imposing 6’7” figure is used for unease and intimidation. Archie Yates as Yorki, Jojo’s only friend in real life, is a natural born scene stealer. This film is not meant to be an actual representation of life under Hitler’s Third Reich. This is a fable about a how a young boy experiences the horrors of the Nazi regime and is able to survive not just with his life but with his heart and soul. The screenplay, adapted by Waititi from the novel Caging Skies by Christine Leunen, believes that fanatism is absurd, so everything presented on screen follows that principal. Nazis are presented as ridiculous because their whole belief system is based on the hateful absurdity that a certain group of people are superior to others. The comedy in this movie is audacious and even uncomfortable but it never mocks or minimizes the horrific actions of the Nazis. When one Nazi gives a Hitler Youth child a live grenade and tells him to run and hug an American soldier, it’s not remotely funny.

Jojo Rabbit shouldn’t work but it does. A large reason for that is the sweet nature of Roman Griffin Davis and his scenes with Thomasin McKenzie, also giving a great performance. Another reason is Taika Waititi’s sensibilities as a filmmaker. He knows just how far to push the comedy and how to play the drama scenes for incredible effect. Advertisements have marketed Jojo Rabbit as an “anti-hate satire” which it certainly is. It is also a story about how hope can survive even in the darkest of places and times, until one day it can step outside again and dance.

It’s a really weird idea, it’s a cutesy Wes Anderson/Calvin & Hobbes-style comedy about a little boy, his imaginary friend and his adventures growing up. It just so happens that that little boy is a Hitler Youth, his imaginary friend is Adolf Hitler and he’s growing up in Nazi Germany during WWII. This movie is very funny. It has a ton of comedy both light and very dark! Don’t be fooled, though. This is less The Producers or Look Who’s Back and more Life is Beautiful. There are some seriously heavy and tragic parts in this movie that I don’t dare spoil here. While it is a commentary about how childish the whole idea of Naziism is, it is also about the horrors of indoctrination and intolerance and the damages they can inflict. Great performances, beautiful costumes and cinematography and with a brilliant script, this is a must-see! One of my favourites of 2019! Expand

This movie has everything!

I randomly watched the movie during a flight, which means that I neither expected much, nor have I watched the trailer, but as soon as I landed Jojo Rabbit managed to become (probably) my favourite film of the past decade.
I laughed, I cried, I was delighted, and touched.
Brilliant performance by the actors, which had great chemistry amongst each other and pulled off a decent way to sound German in the English language without cheaply mocking it. (I am a native German speaker)
Great soundtrack and use of actual music and songs.
The movie has quite a layered point to make, which easily eludes you if only watching once (or on a plane for that matter). Regarding the criticism I've read online:
This is not supposed to be a lighthearted Schindlers Liste, nor a mocking comedy about Hitler.
It is something special on its very own with a unique take on WWII through the eyes of a little boy that wants to fit in with all the other Nazis. By taking that lens it manages to display the horrors (that were visible to a child back then) in a funny way, simply by taking them naively serious. Everyone I've showed this movie so far liked it a lot, Jewish and German alike.

The appearance of Hitler as imaginary friend makes this movie more fun and more lively to be watched with everybody in your living room during Lockdown. The story line is simple, but the plots, scenes, character developments, and surprises are still coming to our way to realize about what is missing during moment of war and who is our true friend during difficult time. I love the way Director can give strong commitment to create focus on main character by giving the title Jojo Rabbit, that makes him more curiosity about himself and questioning many things, including where is his soldier father, what is Jewish, who is Hitler, and many more. I can not find any lackness of this masterpiece. So modern, dramatic, fun, and critical at some points. This is not one-time-watching movie. This is legend. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is honestly my all time favorite so far, It puts you into perspective of "What if you were living in that time". The character development is superb, JoJo goes from a brainwashed kid to a anti-Nazi. Another character stood out me, Captain Klenzindorf. He was forced to train kids to fight because of his injury, and in the end when he saves JoJo from being taken into custody. In the beginning of the movie, Hitler is very kind to JoJo because he sees JoJo as a person, but when JoJo starts to help Elsa, he starts treating him horribly. That just proves how awful Nazi Germany was. To people who say the movie is promoting Nazism with it's humor, it really isn't. JoJo Rabbit's jokes are against Nazi and you are supposed to laugh at how stupid the Nazi's beliefs were. Expand

As he spends more time at home, he discovers that his mom (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a Jewish teenager in their house. Before it's over, this narrative turns into a touching look at innocence, love and war. The actor playing Jojo is simply spectacular, deserving an Oscar for his nuanced and utterly charming performance. Director Taika Waititi (who also plays the boy's imaginary friend Adolph Hitler) has crafted another twisted look at the absurdities of life (he's also hilarious as the Fuhrer). Even though there's plenty of Waititi's twisted sense of humor, this movie evolves into a sweet and ultimately touching wartime drama. Expand

Life Is Beautiful is a rare 10/10 in this category (updating Chaplin creatively and effectively). JoJo has a wealth of assets: the lead child actor, the wonderful visual framing of many shots, vibrant colors and wardrobe, Scarlet Johanson, Sam Rockwell and Rebel Wilson all contributing significantly, plus several twists and turns keeping audiences from settling into tropes, cliches, and/or sentimentality. JoJo Rabbit is an unlikely film. Its very concept seems absurd but it's that absurdity that director Taika Waititi taps into to offer a commentary on the dangers of fascism and ignorance.

I've seen a number of critics claim that the film is without insight, or is a dereliction of duty. One critic review gave it a 0/10. (But don't worry, Metacritic doesn't make critics wait to post a 0/10.)...

As you can see? JoJo Rabbit is another film that shows a disparity between critics and the audience. To claim it is without merit I feel is missing the big picture. The film starts out showing archival footage of Nazi Germany caught in the throes of the political fervor instilled by their tyrannical leader. Germany at the time was buckling under the reparations from WW1. Hitler was able to tap into the resentment and twist it into hatred and anger directing the blame towards the Jewish people. It's this same widespread indoctrination that sees JoJo Betzler fervently striving to be accepted among the Hitler youth. JoJo Betzler is so consumed by this propaganda that he sees Hitler himself (played by Taika Waititi) as his imaginary friend. And while Hitler is played as comic relief for the purpose of satire to great effect? The film has an incredible ability to take the kind of fear and terror instilled by the Nazi's and make them feel quite real compared to the satire and parody elsewhere in the film.

It's difficult to say how or why these specific moments are as effective as they are without ruining the ultimate payoff. The film's greatest strength is how it shows the capacity for a person to change. Not just the person but the ideas that can form and cultivate deep-seated systemic and indoctrinated hatred, particularly those at a young age.

Its wildly imaginative and paradoxically seriously grounded. Jojo Rabbit is a film that actually explores what it is like to live under authoritarian times without making the asinine judgements most films of this type do. People are nuanced, complicated shades of gray and aren't entirely in control of what we do. People don't make a choice to join an evil force or a good force, they do what feels like makes sense to them. We join an emotional journey of an unquestioning boy who has his world expanded just a tiny bit and instead of doubling down on his reality he accepts that there are other truths and moves forward. It's a beautiful, poetic satire that doesn't talk down to people and understands that all humans are doing their best, whatever that may mean. It's a truly human story of war. Expand

A hilarious piece of political satire that isn't afraid to be serious

Based loosely on the 2004 novel Caging Skies by Christine Leunens, Jojo Rabbit is a political satire written and directed by Taika Waititi. Positing that the first casualty of indoctrination is objective truth, Waititi follows in the footsteps of filmmakers such as Charlie Chaplin (The Great Dictator), Mel Brooks (The Producers), Roberto Benigni (La vita è bella), and even Quentin Tarantino (Inglorious Basterds), in attempting to defang Nazi ideology by rendering it utterly absurd. Marketed as an "anti-hate satire", the film has no easy task – to use Nazism as the (mostly) humorous background to what is essentially a bildungsroman, without it seeming exploitative or dismissive. And Waititi manages this tricky balancing act exceptionally well. The satire and slapstick elements are as funny as anything in his filmography, and the film's more serious moments (of which there are several) arrive like an absolute gut-punch.

Großdeutsches Reich, 1945. In the fictional town of Falkenhem, ten-year-old Jojo Betzler (an astonishing debut by Roman Griffin Davis) lives with his whimsical mother Rosie (Scarlett Johansson doing probably the best work of her career) and his imaginary best friend - none other than Hitler himself (a ludicrously over the top Waititi), or at least Jojo's conception of Hitler. Believing absolutely in his duty to the state, Jojo attends a Hitlerjugend camp run by the cynical Cpt. Klenzendorf (a powerful performance by Sam Rockwell that was outrageously ignored by the Academy), who was forced to leave the front line upon losing an eye. However, the overzealous Jojo is injured and forced to return home. At which point, he discovers his mother has been hiding a young Jewish girl, Elsa Korr (a nuanced performance from Thomasin McKenzie), in a crawlspace.

The film mixes slapstick humour, caricature, satire, dramatic irony, and hope, but never does it seem like its ignoring or trivialising real suffering - when the comedy is dropped and Waititi gets serious, the tonal shifts pack a shocking punch. Crucially important to the film's tonal qualities are director of photography Mihai Mălaimare, Jr.'s bright, colourful palette and Ra Vincent's whimsical production design. Together, they speak to the fact that this is Jojo's worldview rather than objective reality, with the look of the film reminding me a great deal of The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014). It sure doesn't look like any World War II movie you're ever likely to have seen.

Thematically, the film examines multiple issues; the devotion of motherhood, the importance of kindness in defeating indoctrination, the disconnect between unchallenged ideology and complex reality, the predetermined attitudinal stance towards the Other, the clash between doing what one knows to be right and what one is expected to do. Klenzendorf's arc is especially telling in this respect. Introduced as a hyperbolic caricature, the source of some of the film's biggest early laughs, as things progress, we realise there's considerably more to his character, and he commands what's easily the most moving scene in the whole film. This is Jojo's story, however, with much of the runtime concerned with his attempts to rationalise the cognitive dissonance between what he's been taught and what he can see with his own eyes.

Of course, although set in 1945, Jojo Rabbit is really about today, as it mocks political extremism, particularly people who hate based on ethnicity or religion. Jojo's belief that Jews are demonic figures capable of powerful magic stands in for people who believe all Muslims are terrorists or all Mexicans are rapists. In this sense, the film is partly about the role adults play in inculcating children into hate and partly about exposing the power of propaganda to subvert truth. But so too is it about rising above such ideology, no matter how ingrained it might be. And although all of this is presented humorously, it never becomes didactic or monolithically preachy – Waititi balances his tones too well.

Of course, Waititi does gloss over some of the more horrific atrocities carried out during the War. The Nazis in the film are, by design, cartoonish, although that is done so as to render them as easily dismissed. The reality, of course, was far darker, and it wouldn't have hurt to have at least one Nazi who isn't a figure of fun. In this sense, the film doesn't represent the awful truth, but it never claims to.

Jojo Rabbit is beautiful, emotional, heartfelt, and devastating, but mostly hilarious and always hopeful. It's an extraordinarily sweet film without ever becoming saccharine, as Waititi strikes a perfect balance between comedy, tragedy, and drama. It's a very funny World War II film which imparts a vital message for our confused and divided world of today – if we let them, love will always trump hate, hope will always light a way through the darkness.

If you’re going to address Nazism and every imaginable anti-Semitic trope through farce, it’s a really, really good idea not to muck it up. Writer/Director Taika Waititi doesn’t.

The premise of this film is unique. Ten-year-old JoJo (Roman Griffin Davis in his professional debut) and his mother live in 1940’s Vienna near the end of World War II. JoJo’s best friend is an imaginary, wildly inaccurate Adolf Hitler (played by Waititi). Early on, JoJo eagerly anticipates a weekend of camping, indoctrination and adventure with the other Hitler Youth. But as the film moves along, his blissfully rabid world view begins to come unhinged when he discovers the Jewish girl his mother is hiding in the attic.

This film’s greatest asset is its mastery of shifting tones. Initially, it trades in broad, slapstick humor. JoJo’s adoration of Hitler and all he stands for is offered as a hilarious example of the blind idolatry one can only hope is unique to ten-year-olds. By Act Two, the tone begins to shift and the horrors all around JoJo start to slide into focus. In one scene, JoJo and his mother are walking through the town square when several sets of dangling legs appear in the foreground. When JoJo asks, “What did they do?” his mother replies softly, “What they could.” By Act Three, the brutality of WW II is on full display, with the film taking on a full-blown (pun intended), serious anti-war tone.

Another great reason to see this film is the supporting cast. Nobody does crazy better than Sam Rockwell (“Seven Psychopaths,” “Three Billboards…”). Here, Rockwell is in full manic mode, exhibiting a blustering braggadocio totally unsupported by reality, a skill he has perfected over several films. As JoJo’s mother, Scarlett Johansson is so compelling and such a sympathetic character that love between mother and son eventually becomes one of the dominant themes of the film. Steven Merchant and Rebel Wilson add additional support. As the girl in the attic, New Zealand-born Thomasin McKenzie conveys a world-weary kindness one would expect from a person much older than her nineteen years.

In its juxtaposition of slapstick humor with Nazi horrors, “JoJo Rabbit” treads some of the same ground explored in 2017’s equally excellent “The Death of Stalin.” Both films play for laughs that carry an undertone of dread. But this film clearly has its own points to make about the insanity of blind devotion and about the risks of unthinking tribalism.

“JoJo Rabbit” excels by drawing the viewer in with its initial humor, then using the built-up good will to provoke serious personal thought and reflection. In so doing, it solidifies Taika Waititi’s reputation as a thoughtful provocateur. Overall, this is one of the best films of the year.

Taika Waititi's direction is very interesting, as well as the script, which manages to develop the characters very well. Taika also acts in this film, and his role is very funny and very relaxed. All the performances in this film are very good, all are very well: Roman Griffin Davies, Scarlett Johansson, Thomasin McKenzie and Sam Rockwell. Another interesting point of this film are the changes in atmosphere, that is, the transition between funny moments and dramatic and more serious moments, there are scenes to laugh and scenes to cry. Incredible casting and direction from Taika Waititi. Incredibly funny shining light onto a dark time in history. Stephen Merchant was great in the movie aswell as Scarlett Johansen and Roman Griffif Davis who played an awesome performance as Jojo

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The beginning is a great movie in and of itself. The addition of the tone-change in the last third to much better befit the circumstances brings the movie to its peak, and brings it to the brilliant finish. Expand

“And it is up to you to decide if you want to be remembered, or disappear without a trace, like a pitiful grain of sand into a desert of insignificance. To put it plainly. Get your **** together and sort out your priorities.”

Jojo Rabbit is everything you’d want from a movie with its premise. Funny. Brilliantly shot. Heartfelt and emotional. Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rothwell both do great jobs, but the shining star of this movie is definitely Roman Griffin Davis, who plays the titular Jojo Betzler. Davis gives one of the best child performances of all time. The cinematography is absolutely beautiful, and all the emotional notes the film tries to hit it does with skill. Highly recommended. There's a sentence I never thought I'd say. The whole cast is wonderful in this film, just look at that poster, boy. They all brought it. This is a story about how hate can soak into young people due to an inherent need to belong. It message is particularly poignant in a time where a teenager's political leanings can come down to which subreddit they happened to click on first. Ifs hilarious, it's genuine, and it's easily one of my favorites this year. Expand
