Jaws belongs to alcohol as much as it belongs to Bruce the Shark. Alcohol appears in about half the scenes, and the central trio, Brody, Hooper, and Quint, can be aptly characterized by how they handle alcohol. Brody, the hydrophobic Everyman, pours wine into beer mugs but can't tolerate Quint's homemade shots. Hooper, the wealthy but surprisingly badass oceanographer, knows to air his wine but can still drink a shot. And Quint, the hardened shark-hunter, guzzles beer cans in one swallow.
Anyway, terrific film, as always, which I got to see in a theater rerelease for Fourth of July weekend; all the booze really does bring to mind the way most spend the holiday.

A new kind of horror even though this movie doesn't really scare me that much and it's better than the sequels which ruined the franchise of Jaws forever and it's only a promise that another sequel to this won't ever happen again.

Jaws (1975) was directed by Steven Spielberg and it based on the novel
written by Peter Benchley of the same name. It's and old blockbuster
and still one of the most famous movies ever released. It's a thriller
set on Amity Island, which is a fictional summer resort island in New
England.

The story is about a great white sharks who terrorizes people on the
4th of July on Amity Island. Three victims get eaten before someone
takes the situation in their hands. Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) the
sheriff of the island, Quint (Robert Shaw) an army veteran with an
astonishing shark killing career, and Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) an
oceanographer with great knowledge on sharks form a crew and head with
a ship to hunt the beast down. It gets more complicated than what they
thought it would be and face many difficulties during their hunt.

The well known Jaws soundtrack when the shark approaches the victim is
one of the golden attributes of the movie, and the thing that probably
even the new generations well know. But other than that little detail,
the whole movie is just brilliant. The actors really give us a
heartwarming feeling while on the boat, they express their passion for
their jobs really well, and they really look like they are putting an
effort into catching the great white.

Being a 20th century movie, i was thrilled every time the shark got to
show itself on the camera, which is something hard to accomplish with
the technology they had at the time. I think that if the movie would
have come out at the present time it would have the same success as it
had back in they day, being a masterpiece in all aspects.

I would recommend the movie to all the movie-lovers that wish to see
the „old-timers" and that don't mind seeing the screen in a retro way.
Definitely still the best shark movie out there.

Based on the 1974 novel of the same name and notorious for it’s troubled production history, the movie remains as effective as ever due to it’s adherence to the philosophy that “it’s what you don’t see that scares you”.

Spielberg’s minimalistic Hitchockian approach (mostly born out of necessity due to the fact that the mechanical shark barely worked), John Williams iconic score and the fantastic cast are key ingredients in elevating the campy B-movie premise into one of the most iconic movies ever made.

This film deals with a single theme: the shark attacks on humans. Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb, it has Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss in the lead roles.

Regarded by many as Spielberg's consecration film (I don't quite agree, I think E.T. was most notable at this point), this thriller has become one of the most popular films of the seventies, a real milestone of cinema. Honor is made to it's director, who knew how to work the central theme and skilfully use special effects he had at his disposal, even if we think also in the failure he was trying to use that unfortunate mechanical shark. In fact, it was better that way because we have more fear of what we don't see. The actors went well with his role, particularly Shaw. The script was innovative for it's time, being the first to address shark attacks. The sound effects are excellent and John Williams created one of the most impressive soundtracks of all the history of cinema. It's impossible not to feel the heart beating faster when he heard that song that, unsurprisingly, has become a classic. This film won three Oscars (Best Sound, Best Soundtrack and Best Editing) and the Golden Globe for Best Soundtrack.

It's not a mere coincidence that Spielberg is one of the few directors who won two Oscars. He is meticulous, inventive, perfectionist and genial. Although this film does not understand why sharks attack people (usually confusing them with seals and other animals in their food chain) and have caused a real stigma against them that still makes them deeply misunderstood, it was able to maintain it's popularity and continues today to be the target of admiration of the public.

This is something that every Jaws rip-off completely missed.
Jaws is scary, but it isn't the scares that make it great, it's the lighter moments.
It's the joy that these characters bring.

I could see them hanging out in the boat, singing, comparing scars and sharing shark stories forever.

Just about everything about the film is fantastic: The plot, story, cinematography, acting, special effects, and others. One of the best films of all time, and possibly the best film that Steven Spielberg produced. From the shark's first attack to its death at the hands of Brody, the shark had a surreal effect on audiences, including me. The work that they did to make the shark with 1975 technology makes the film a remarkable technical achievement. A must watch for anyone who loves movies. Expand

A very good, and evidently a very influential, film from 1975.

That release year doesn't even sound correct, the film holds up extremely well in that regard - I knew already, but if I didn't and I had guessed the year I wouldn't have said anything earlier than 1990. This alone raises the film up ½* for me - it's impressively made.

I don't, personally, think the story is as perfect as the aforementioned. Don't get me wrong it's all entertaining, but I feel it peaks with the shark terrorising the town as a whole - when it's down to just the trio, I didn't enjoy it quite as much. Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss do give notable performances, though.

Going back to my initial point, the effects for the shark are incredible. I kinda wanted to simply see more of just the shark, even if we do get more of the great white towards the conclusion. Heck, the film from the shark's prospective would've been 5*. Lastly, that John Williams score is sensational - I think every film fan, whether they've seen it or not, knows that famous theme.

Almost 47 years after its release, I've finally seen 'Jaws'. I don't honestly think the story/the characters itself are anything out of this world, but there's so much to admire and praise from a technical aspect. A marvel, really.

Today, I first time saw this movie and I am not as amazed as people say this movie makes you. I am not saying that film isn't good. It is great but not a masterpiece.

The first hour is not interesting and nothing much happens. The movie actually isn't that interesting until you finally see the monster. The actors did their jobs very well, but the movie lacked action. Now, some people will say that this amount of action was enough but I don't think so.

Spielberg's direction is great. Overall "Jaws" is not a classic or masterpiece, it's just a pure and simple entertainment with the ending we wanted to see.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the best shark movies ever made. Jaws has inspired to wake of movies today with its duh duh duh duh shark theme song that could get anyone out of the water in a mire second it was directed by 27-year-old Steven Spielberg and I believe jaws is the 2nd film he directed. Jaws also have a revolutionary score by John Williams and it was one of the first Spielberg, William duo. we follow the story of a small tourist island that is getting attacked by a giant shark and three people on a boat go and hunt the beast and those 3 fishermen are Martin brody, Matt Hooper, and Sam quint. the first half of the movie is a horror movie with a haunting suspenseful score and the second half is an action and adventure film with a more upbeat film. the first half is set on amity where chrisse Watkins and Alex Kitner gets attacked by a shark. Kitner's mom puts up a $3000 bounty on the shark that killed Alex Kitner and of course, a bunch of crazies starts trying to kill the shark and they caught it!... they thought hooper talks some science stuff and says that not the shark. later that night hooper gets the chief drunk and they go to check out the shark...It was the wrong shark who could have imagined. they go on to a boat and see a boat and one of the best jumpscares happens when ben gardeners dead body just pops up and scares a tooth out of hoopers hand. The next day at the beach two kids prank the very populated beach of amity but then there's a real shark Michal Brody is on a boat with his friends and there's another guy there and boom shark attack! Michael goes in shock and while at the doctor brody gets the mayor to sign the contract for quint. brody hooper and quint go on the boat and shark just kinda toys with them for the rest of the runtime. hooper is sick of the shark and goes into the cage to stab it with a poison needle but the shark goes attacks the back of the cage and scares the hooper he drops his poison thing evruntlly he get out the cage and hides behind a rock and they show some awesome footage of a real-life shark getting caught in a cage nobody was hurt during the real-life footage thankfully. quint and brody pull up the cage and the shark leaps out of the water and onto the flooding boat and nom noms on quint. brody is stuck on the boat and the shark tries to eat the man but he gives the beast an oxygen tank instead and gets a gun and shoots at the shark when Smile you son of a b***h! BOOM the sharks blows up. hooper rises and they swim back to the shore the end waits.. jaws 2? jaws 3 and jaws the revenge! what alright that's the review for now Expand
