A regrettable portion of Jackass: Best and Last is simply regurgitated material. (There’s even a special credit for a “best of” cinematographer, presumably because such a large percentage of this film has been seen before.) Far too much of the movie consists of the guys playing the tape and reminiscing about their favorite exploding portable toilets.

Sure, lead jackass Johnny Knoxville is an appealing performer (and a decent actor, as he’s proven numerous times). And some of the rest of his motley crew display a healthy awareness of the utter stupidity of what they’re doing. But while there are occasionally funny moments, these movies are emblematic of the dumbing down of America.

Jackass: Best and Last is the weakest in the franchise ("Bad Grandpa," you are no longer the worst), and only as funny as it is because it relies heavily on classic slapstick set pieces that haven't grown old. It's a shameless cash grab, but more shameless cash grabs should offer the amount of laughs this one does.

This is what I will miss most about Jackass. Beyond the nauseating misbehavior and the outlandish self-harm (which, okay, yes, I will also miss), this series showed us that the best way to face our own mortality is not with grace and class and stoicism. It’s by laughing at the absurdity of existence while surrounded by the people you love.
