It starts promisingly but overall it's an action/thriller with a simple plot that needed more development and mediocre fights. However the hero is memorable because he doesn't follow the rules and Amy Smart is super cute.

In some respects, it's easy to see why Jack Reacher was never going to be a darling for the critics. What you must remember, then, is that Lee Child knocks one of these books out every year. If anything, the story he provides is just a standard crime thriller. Such prolific output is usually fit for straight-to-TV drama series', so it's a surprise that Jack Reacher not only received the treatment it deserved, but also provides perhaps the most entertaining crime-thriller since The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Tom Cruise, hate him or love him, and forgetting the height issue, is definitely Reacher. Part of my respect for the film comes from solely how well he pulled the character off. As for the plot, it's standard Lee Child fare. You're provided with the general story, not so much a whodunnit as a whodiddit with them. There's red herrings, viewpoints from both the good and bad guys, and it is all paced at the same break neck speed as the novels.

My only gripe is that the reveals are all quite predictable and unexciting, which again, comes back to Child's original work. Although he can write great material and characters, the mystery side to his novels has, even after all these years, been rather amateurish. But what's important here is that everyone involved in the film makes it completely believable, right until the final scene, which, is hardly Bourne, but still a great finale.… Expand

Didn't get the chance to watch this in theaters but it was definitely a good Saturday night movie to watch on the couch with a few friends, probably not the movie to boast about in your collection.

This is a movie that if you got it you liked it, if you didn't get it you didn't like it. Though I did not read the book that this title is based upon, and cannot therefore make speculation as to how well it holds true to the source material, I will say that this is a well put together film that doesn't ask it's audience to doThough I did not read the book that this title is based upon, and cannot therefore make speculation as to how well it holds true to the source material, I will say that this is a well put together film that doesn't ask it's audience to do anything more than sit back and wait for the narrative to be unraveled. Though it teases a few twists, the plot is pretty easily predictable. The charm that this film has, is not in being a psychological rollercoaster in the same league as Michael Douglas' "The Game" nor is it in being an over the top action movie in the same vein as Bruce Willis' "Die Hard", but rather being a coalescence of the two.

Tom Cruise (love him or hate him) does what Tom Cruise does best, he allows himself to partially melt away from the screen and allows the character to come out and be somewhat believable. Now, though Cruise's acting ability is no where near the likes of the Masterful Gary Oldman, or Daniel Day-Lewis, he does a good job of getting out of the way of his character enough that you believe him. Though some people will disagree with me on the grounds that his range of characters are all loosely the same, I would argue that it would be smart of an actor to accept roles that he knows he can knock out of the park so to speak. And if the argument continued there is only one thing I would have to say, "Interview with a Vampire" and at that point we'd be concluded.

Rosamund Pike is excellent in this film, she also brings a level of legitimacy to some of her roles that are in movies that have no business having any such thing ('Doom' I'm looking at you). Given the circumstances she is faced with the natural reaction of anyone in that situation would be one of terror, though she still allows the character to shine through as a strong female (given it is within her arena as a lawyer). Don't get me wrong, her role won't be winning any points for the flick from someone who is putting it up to the Bechdel test. This does not diminish how well she played the role, from strong confident lawyer to "deer in the headlights" terrified civilian. There are moments where she switches gears so rapidly that you can't help but believe that she is petrified beyond all reason. An excellent performance by an actress who deserves more of the good and fulfilling kinds of roles someone of her caliber desires.… Expand

No-brain formula-drama-action with cop guy. Feels like a vehicle for Tom Cruise and not much else. Dialog's cringeworthy and acting is wooden. Only female characters are Blonde lawyer victim and Redhead teenage bimbo.

I must admit - i wasn't all that sold on the idea that Cruise was some mysterious kick ass army veteran. , And although the first fight seen is good it still doesn't give that kick ass flare we see from the mission impossible movies. Good old-school action movie. It has intriguing plot which develops nicely without loosing grip or momentum. If it wasn't for the occasional too brutal scene (which could be done tastefully instead), I'd be giving it 8. Overall I am happy I watched it - entertaining throughout.… Expand

The Good: Cruise actually shows some acting skill in this one, though it does help that he is playing a very well written character. Reacher is interesting and makes me want to read the book series. The story starts off with a lot of intrigue and with such a great set up, you remain very interested in what is going on. Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, and David Oyelowo round out a good supporting cast ... especially Jenkins and Oyelowo who always seem to be the highlight of whatever they are appearing in.

The Bad: Cruise was an odd choice. While he shows flashes of real acting skill, a lot of the times you can't help but feel like you've seen this movie before. Far too often, Cruise is the same guy he is in any other action/thriller that he has been in. Robert Duvall was pointless and his character rubbed me the wrong way. He was very cliche and I could have done without him. The story itself unravels somewhat near the end.… Expand

Firstly it's full of detail, and that comes across not only in each brilliant fight/action sequence, but also in the characterisation and writing where Jack Reacher is pegged extremely well by Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise. Second though, there's a true 90's vibe; thanks to constant stylistic choices and another awesome score from Joe Kraemer. In the end, this is well above what I thought it would be.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Whatever genre these things fall into; you always have to be in the right mood. It may be one of the best of the bunch, but why are these plots always so goddamn complex? I get it's part of the appeal, but I just find it takes me out of some moments.
VERDICT: Watch this with an analytical head and you'll be surprised at how clever it is. Want to watch and engage? You'll have a ball, but you'll be confused as hell...… Expand

The two films have had as much resemblance to the books as Tom Cruise does to Child's descriptions of Reacher. The movies borrow only the most interesting characters, settings and plot synopsis, then carefully scripts them for action sequences. Yes, I'm that guy who also scoffs at James Bond movies. Fortunately have never read Ian Fleming's books, or I might be even more angry.… Expand

Car Jack Reacher sous ses dehors de thriller très sérieux et machiavélique se ridiculise constamment à travers son scénario foireux et incohérent, ses dialogues imbéciles qu'on dirait sortis d'une infâme série policière écrite à la chaîne sur des rouleaux de papier-cul. Rosamund Pike n'est pas mieux logée dans son rôle d'avocate coincée et gravure de mode. On la sait très ordinaire mais David Fincher en avait presque tiré quelque chose dans Gone Girl. Ici, on a juste envie de lui mettre des baffes.

La réalisation est de bonne facture mais on a du mal à rester éveillé devant tous ces effets de manches : un film qui s'enlise et se noie dans sa propre prétention... et le nombrilisme de Tom bouse.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a mystery/crime/action film, with themes including surveillance, suspicion and vigilantism. First off, I felt the film was alright at creating a tense atmosphere at the start, with the first ten minutes or so consisting of no dialogue, while we watch a sequence of events take place.

I felt that it overly relied on music, with the use of classical incidental music being over-emphasised at times. It gave it an irritatingly artifical feel, almost as if the film makers were actively trying to force us to feel worried about whats going on, which doesn't really work. It seemed a bit off putting to me.

Cast wise, Tom Cruise plays Jack Reacher. He gives his usual action hero performance, like in the Mission:Impossible films etc. he comes across as a quick witted, slick, macho type action hero guy. He certainly isn't the smiling type in this film, being more pensive I suppose. I would have liked to have seen more in the way of complicated choreography in relation to the fight scenes - some of them I felt seemed far too simplistic and unrealistic due to that. Meanwhile, Rosamund Pike plays the defense attorney, Helen. She gives a good performance as a relatively open minded and equally quick witted character, which was nice to see. Other cast members include David Oyelowo as Emerson, Robert Duvall as Cash and Werner Herzog as The Zec.

Content wise, the film contains both sex and drug references, moderate violence, including some bloody bodily injuries shown and gunfire. Torture is inferred although nothing greatly graphic is shown in that regard. It is potentially frightening in a few scenes due to the pressures characters are placed under, hence the film was given a 15 rating, although there is an edited version which carries a lower, 12, rating instead. I watched the film via Netflix, where it displayed a 15 rating.

Generally, I found this to be a pretty run of the mill action thriller style film. It didn't especially surprise me, although the plot did have some surprising twists and thus was decent enough in that regard. I thought it was an alright film, an easy enough watch but certainly nothing really great or fantastic. I imagine that the novel its based on (One Shor by Lee Child) would be more engrossing or interesting to read in general, at a guess.

Funnily enough, no, I wouldn't recommend it. Its an alright action/thriller film but it just felt a bit too artificial with over reliance on music and it felt a bit too much like a vanity project for Tom Cruise, so I wasn't particularly keen on it. The plot twists are alright but as a film it felt pretty stale to me, so I wouldn't recommend it on that basis.… Expand

But in my opinion, Jack Reacher is a perfectly fine action film. It’s nothing special, but the fights are entertaining and the acting surprisingly good, Werner Herzog in particular. But he’s awesome in everything, so that’s not necessarily unique. The cinematography is surprisingly creative at times, full credit to Christopher McQuarrie’s direction. McQuarrie wrote the Usual Suspects and directed two Mission Impossible films, so he has a good record. My biggest problem with Jack Reacher is its characters, they weren’t two dimensional, but also not quite fleshed out. It also tries to tackle serious issues, and is successful to an extent, but also overreaches at certain points.… Expand

Good movie. Just like a normal type of Tom Cruise movie. Where he kicks lots of butte. In this one he's like a ghost. Trying to be like the bourne identity. Still a decent movie though.

It is what it is. An uncomplicated dective thriller with an uncomplicated main character. Is it the most thought provoking, most introspective, most complex thriller you've ever seen?
