Yesterday we headed out to see “It” and everyone in the theater was clapping, the cast was great and the effects were far more superior than the original which made the film better than the original. I’ve seen many say they were scared as I wondered why were they scared with the original?

Clowns have never freaked me out, the original sort of put a nice dark spin on clowns which I saw to be awesome. It the original was brilliant and in now way is this movie a better film; it’s just a perfectly put together remake respecting both films as equal. They did a wonderful job on the remake and I look forward to putting it in our personal film collection. “It 2017” is the 4th good movie to come to the theater in 2017 so far.

The losers club characters as well as actors all did a fantastic job(surprising for kid actors), Bill Skarsgard is wonderfully disturbing as pennywise, the sense of friendship among the kids is very well done and well written and it absolutely takes advantage of the R rating. IT is an extremely fun and frightening movie that will definitely scare younger people. And some older ones too. Seriously some of the imagery in this movie still gives me goosebumps. Expand

Brilliant, scary and (yes!) over-the-top as IT... should be. The children are peerless performers, which makes it all the more enjoyable. One would not want it to end.

Not a lot of scares for me, but still the movie is terrifying. All the actors, be it the kids, Pennywise or the adults, did a fantastic job, everything was really credible. Some clown moments really left an impression, especially the scene in the garage (photo viewing) and the one with Bev, after a big moment at her home place (don't mean the sink one). A small critic is the montage/transition of the movie when it comes to the encounter with the clown for every kid. Oh and some of those CGI balloons :) All in all a very good adaption of the book, adding a lot of the missing stuff from the 90s movie. Will probably go see it a 2nd time. Well done Expand

I have yet to read the book, though I do plan on it so I can’t give a comparison on which is better or how accurate it is. Nonetheless, “IT” is its own movie. If you enjoy movies where it’s tense throughout most of the movie with something going on 24/7, this movie is for you. After a tragic event occurs, a team of friends stop at nothing to uncover what is haunting their town and making kids go missing. The movie is skillful at developing the main characters, and is remarkable in being unpredictable as to the events that occur. If dealing with Pennywise the Dancing Clown isn’t already enough, the film incorporates bullies and atrocious parents to exacerbate the ghostbusting children’s problem. “IT” is a movie worth seeing. There were only two things to point out in negative fashion towards the movie, one being rather nitpicky. During the library scene, a red balloon is seen eerily passing behind a pair of chairs with slotted backs. The string to the balloon seemingly hangs low enough to be able to be seen passing behind the chairs, but I don’t believe it was there (in fairness, it could’ve been and I may have not seen it). That point however, belongs more in a “CinemaSins” video rather than a review, but I figured I would include it anyway. The main negative point I have towards the film would be the banal horror movie tactic of using a presence or being to appear very quickly on screen to lure a character off into a separate area. This felt stale after being used several times throughout the movie, especially after the characters made it their duty to never leave one another, yet they are so easily drawn away. I realize they’re children but in that situation, I don’t think it matters.

Pennywise’s appearance is iconic, and frightening. Whilst walking out of the movie theater all that strikes me as memorable, more so than his already memorable appearance would be the sinister glow in his eyes. I feel a sense of unease, as if his eyes are the true essence of evil intentions. Pennywise’s tone is monumentally caustic. He enjoys making you feel fear, and is sarcastic and unserious with whatever you have to say. Having said all of that, without a doubt my favorite thing about Pennywise, the whole film rather; would be the truly inhuman movement he performs. I cannot give a polished description on how it looks, but it is unlike anything I’ve seen before.

Bill Skarsgard completely and utterly kills it in his own role as Pennywise. This is coming from someone whos seen the original IT only in bits and pieces years ago. I remember IT well though and everything about this new movie is WAY better than the original. All the child actors are great. Definite Stranger Things vibe in a very good way. Finn Wolfhard was freaking hilarious. More creepy than scary yet has some frighteningly striking visuals. Sure theres some pacing/editing issues but thats it. People cant rate this movie lower because it wasnt as scary as they thought. Everyone can relate to this movie in someway, sometimes real life can be evil too. This movie is about losing your innocence as a child and having to face your fears to become an adult in order to grow up and take on life. It made me feel like a kid again. I was laughing one minute then creeped out the next all the while engaged never once getting bored. The more I think about IT the more I liked it, will be seeing again. Its big budget film making at its finest so ignore the minor issues and nitpickers and enjoy the show. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I came into IT having read the book twice and watching (and hating) the original TV mini-series. As a fan of Stephen King’s novel and the disappointment from the mini-series, I was hoping that a cinematic attempt at portraying the beloved Pennywise would definitely work. It is safe to say that not only did they achieve that, but they also made one of the best horror films to be released in the last decade.

It was terrifyingly good. The CGI, while cartoony and rushed at times, looked believable still and I believe that the cartoon-style was intentional to show the psychological effect on the kids, rather than the forms IT takes being literal. Andres Muschietti did an excellent job at directing this film, especially on such a tight budget of $30 million. For context, Deadpool constantly claimed how low its budget was and how many limits it had, and they had a budget of $50 million. With a lower and tighter budget, IT exceeded all expectations and has since broken *many* records.

The flow of the film is a major con for most critics, but I actually liked the switch-up of a coming-of-age story to a horror film in such low space of each other, and I liked it because it kept you on the edge of your seat the entire time, because you’d never know when the horror ended or started. What I absolutely love about this film and Muschietti’s directing is the subtlety.

SPOILER TERRITORY

I can’t believe the amount of subtle horror in this film.
When they were helping Ben in the alleyway, Pennywise’s face was spray painted on the wall for the last few seconds of the scene, and it really brought forward the mood of the film. There were tons more; like the clown moving its head when Richie walked past, the librarian death staring Ben in the library, etc. All of these subtle horrors make the film so much more rewarding if you watch it on multiple occasions. I know I’m going to go watch it a second time and then I might update my review now that I can focus on the film rather than be mesmerized.

The ending was very different to the novel, as in the novel obviously the controversial scene occurs, but they did not include Pennywise turning into its true form, and the Losers’ Club seeing it as a spider. Whether or not I got that mixed up with when they *spoiler alert* come back as adults, I don’t know. I’ll need to reread.

I liked the gore, it really wanted that R rating. Georgie screaming before being dragged into the storm drain was really brutal and shocking. It set the tone from the very beginning and I loved every second of it. For the long runtime of 2 hours 15 minutes, it flew past.
However, because of the constant switch-up between genres the story NEVER has time to breathe. The experience is so intense, and maybe a few scenes where we get to know more of the kids families would let the story have a bit of breath before bringing back Pennywise; speaking of which, that was my ONLY issue with Skarsgard’s Pennywise; he had too much screentime in my opinion, and I feel that made his presence less creepy at times as we knew he was going to be there. His other forms were tremendous, and the inclusion of the Leper was superb, however Pennywise was too common and we were spoilt.

I’d love to rate IT – Chapter One a 9/10 based on all the points I have explained. I cannot wait for Chapter 2 and hope to see where they take the story.

With their own quirks, plenty of time to see them interact, and fantastic acting by all, I loved every second of them on screen together. Of course the movie goes into some cliched horror movie things (which I won't mention) but overall I was shocked at how well this film blended drama, really funny comedy, and downright scary moments. Two scenes in particular freaked me out and neither were particularly big scare moments. Also, neither actually features a clown, something I'm not really sure I get why people are actually afraid of. The first happens in the background, during a library scene. The second is a painting...that's all I'll say about those.

Also, every character stands out and was memorable. I'd absolutely hang out with any of them if they were real people and definitely related to a few. Besides the guys in the group there was a breakout performance by the female character. Pennywise was also brilliantly portrayed here. Creepy, relentless, and of course, scary. While no actual clown moments were all that nightmare inducing, there's no one that can honestly say they didn't get effected by the dread and force in which he hunted each character. During a house scene every character gets separated and goes through some pretty torturous moments, all while we get to see them act exactly like we would. Which brings me back to the acting/writing. There's no "too smart for their age" kid here...no kid acting like a grown up. All these kids are scared and freaking out on their own and band together at the end when they realize they're all part of a stronger unit. With the combination of a terrifying villain, several strong heroes, great character arcs by all, and a perfect length to let you experience everything and care about everyone, "It" is right up there in my top 5 films so far this year.

It is a really good adaption of the book (minus the orgy thing of course). However, what a lot of reviewers seems to misunderstand, is that this isn't just a horror movie.

It's a coming-of-age thriller with supernatural elements. The purpose of the scares isn't to scare you, but to cater to the fears of each individual kid in the losers club.

With that being said, there are some genuinely unnerving scenes in the movie, but it has it's focus on the characters themselves, where the focus should be.

As for Pennywise, it's hard to compare Curry and Skarsgaard, as they depict two wildly different variants of the infamous clown. Curry was the creepy child molester type and Skarsgaard is just plain frightening.

The movie has great cinematography and a good flowline of time, as well as great dialogue and acting. The one thing that may be slightly annoying for some, is that some of the scene to scene scares, doesn't always seem to stick with the kids.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Stephen King's novel as never seen before... As a fan of Stephen King's novel "IT" I must say that i was extremely impressed by the movie. Firstly, the WHOLE cast and creative team behind the movie were perfectly chosen. Bill Skarsgard nails the role of Pennywise in way that you kind of sympathize the character. I was never expecting to like a child eater! All of the Losers Club have done an amazing job on maintaining their character in the correct way! Unlike all the other horror movies in the industry, IT delivers a humorous factor to the audience that breaks the horror part of the movie. In result, it really makes the movie more enjoyable. It also has a very sensitive factor. The fact that Bill is dedicated to find his brother Georgie because he thinks that he is the one to be blamed for his death is amazingly well put in the movie.

There are still some changes from the book, but lets not forget that a book to a movie adaption is not always the same. All in all, Andy has done an amazing job on this movie and everyone else from cast to crew! Good job! You'll float too!

There are certainly a few flaws such as Mike Hanlon disappointingly given the shaft when it came to character development and dialogue as well as a couple of scare scenes suffering from less-than-optimal CGI.

But everything else was absolutely top-notch from the acting, the directing, to the forbidding atmosphere. If I had to describe this movie, it would probably be a combination of the demonic spook-house thrills of The Conjuring series combined with the setting of Stranger Things and the antics found in 80’s nostalgic classics such as The Goonies.

Even though the trailers have sold It as a horror film and while it is indeed a solid horror film, this is not the movie’s strongest attribute. That is because at it’s heart the movie is a touching coming-of-age story with Pennywise serving more as a metaphor for the traumas and personal issues that each of the members of the Loser’s club must overcome. I think it’s due to this reason that the movie not only ends up being one of the best King adaptations ever, but possibly one of the best movies of the year period.

Bill Skarsgard (my Favourite blood eater from the Netflix show Hemlock Grove) does right out with that in the famous opening scene with the paper boat and Georgie's Arm, in this remake there isn't a doubt in the viewers mind that this isn't a clown, but a being that just has the face of one, and Georgie finds that out first hand or should i say arm. so we find the losers slowly coming to grips with talking to a girl, dealing with the loss of a brother, finding body parts, and being followed by a creepy clown that nom nom noms on people ... you know normal kid stuff. so slowly through out the movie each child is presented with their biggest fear, we have Stan, Ben, Bev, Richie, Eddie, Mike, and bill.

The Acting in this movie was some of the best child actors i have ever seen, and its hard to remember they are child actors. although we are blessed to see Finn Wolfhard from "Stranger Things" as Richie, his experience shows in this film almost like he is directing the others off screen.

9/10 for this nostalgic remake. an amazing movie for those who like a good scare, are a fan of Stephen King. or just want something odd and out of the box, IT delivers and all of that and more, again i cant get over thanking the Writers for this one, it could be just as cheesy and not scary as the original but boy, was i wrong

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. IT (2017) is a remake of Stephen King’s novel with the same name, directed by Andy Muschietti. It was about a group of unpopular kids being bullied by others called the Losers’ Club and one day, a creature called IT (Bill Skarsgard), who could morph into anything anyone fears, came to Derry, Maine and tried to separate the kids apart and also terrorize Derry. The kids had to find the clown and kill it and before that, they had to deal with the things they were afraid of. You know before this movie, there was a Tv movie called Stephen King’s It (1990) and I saw a few clips about it. I didn’t want to see the whole movie because it was more than 190 minutes and it took really long. After seeing some clips, I was bored with it. IT from 1990 sucks, the clown Pennywise was more like a playful villain, not the one who tried to scare kids and killed kids. Tim Curry only wanted to play with kids, not to scare them and when he did, it wasn’t scary, only his make-up face. I didn’t like Stephen King’s 1990 adaptation at all. Starring Jaeden Lieberher as Bill Denbrough (or stuttering Bill), Finn Wolfhard as Richie Tozier, Sophia Lillis as Beverly Marsh, Jack Dylan Gazer as Eddie Kaspbrak, Jeremy Ray Taylor as Ben Hanscom, Chosen Jacobs as Mike Hanlon, Wyatt Oleff as Stanley Uris and Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise the Dancing Clown. In many movies, kids sucked at acting, especially childish movies but in this movie, I really love the acting, the kids did a really excellent job on it, swearing here and there and they’re phenomenal. I really like Finn being Richie and I also liked his language (he used it wisely). Jaeden acted exactly like Bill in the novel (he stammered well like “Ge-Ge-Georgie”) and Bill Skarsgard was 100% perfect for the role as IT. His Pennywise was really scary and usually popped out at the right time and audiences feared his character, his looks (well not the clown suit). In I really liked the make-up of Pennywise in here, much better than Tim Curry’s (his face was like a clown who wanted to play with kids). I also loved the CGI effects in here. Nothing was funny about Pennywise being edited with the effects. His face was truly terrifying. The terrifying creatures were well-set and . The cinematography was really good. It was filled with darkness and frightening. The rooms were dark and they made objects (at least one) fell and it was scary. I really liked when they’re doing something that no adults would trust (like you’re telling your parents what you’ve seen “Mommy, I saw dead people in my room” they won’t believe and I saw movies like this such as Candance in Phineas and Ferb told her mom that her brother were inventing something and when she went to see the invention, nothing was there). Benjamin Wallfisch did really great with the original score. The piano soundtrack was as creepy as everything was in the movie and they used kids singing (it was also really creppy on so many levels). Kids’ voice were also used as a character’s flashback which was scary and the line (You’ll Float Too) was scary as well but I loved his soundtrack “Every 27 Years” the most. It (2017) was such an excellent Stephen King’s adaptation. The performances were great (Bill Skarsgard was freaking me out), the CGI was well-used and the original score was creepy. This adaptation was a hundred times better than the 1990 one and it was one of the greatest Stephen King’s adaptation based on his greatest book (the book was extremely long and I hadn’t finished reading it yet). It pulls very few punches. Something all too rare and actually very surprising for such a mainstream horror flick. I applaud director Andrés Muschietti for having the integrity to do so. Lord knows he could have toned everything down and still made plenty of money at the box-office simply on the name alone. The actual scares in the film are of the funhouse variety. It's big-thrills, large and flashy, and almost rapid fire. While there's a great little atmosphere to things, it doesn't change the fact that IT simply isn't very frightening. Instead it's more exciting and outright fun to watch Pennywise torment the kids. As a result I was able to deal with the fact that I wasn't exactly quaking in my boots. There's also the fact that the movie has such a great, memorable villain. One portrayed excellently by Bill Skarsgård. If they nail the sequel I have no doubt Pennywise will finally be held to same level of respect as Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers, Leatherface, and Jason Vorhees by becoming one of the iconic horror villain icons in the mind of just about every horror fan, and not just he clued in. Heck, this movie might even be enough to do that on it's own.

The real strength of the movie is in it's characters and story. Both of which are brimming with heart and humor. More so than we usually see from this genre. It's about friendship, facing your fears, and is funnier than most comedies. It's a blood-soaked coming of age tale that's done rather believably (given the premise) in just about every area. There is even a nice amount of fidelity to the source material and the new stuff fits right in.

There is a little something missing from the movie however. Some of the book's core themes didn't make the cut. We never really get to see the effects IT has on the town as a whole. How everybody seems to ignore what's going on, such as the adults turning blind eyes to acts of cruelty that regularly occur between the kids. I also found a little bit of a problem with the movie's depiction of Henry Bowers. We don't get to see his transformation from regular bully to legitimately dangerous psychopath. He's just homicidal from the get go and there's no context as to why he is so aggressive towards Ben Hanscom in the way that he is. Another complaint is that the movie doesn't do much with Mike Hanlon. He's the only member of the Loser's Club who feels left out for the majority of the film.

While not without it's flaws, IT is still very much a triumph. With a stellar cast of genuinely teenage actors (the standouts being Wolfhard and Lillis), strong writing, entertainingly brutal thrills and a great sense of humor, IT is an all around great time at the movies. IT also stands as a satisfying adaptation of a Stephen King work. The most satisfying in quite a long time. IT easily stands amongst the top of the pack in terms of that. As a huge fan of the book I was quite entertained. I had a blast and highly recommend giving it a shot. Even if you haven't read the book, it's still just a really good horror movie in it's own rights.

It's also an 80's coming of age movie as well as a horror film, and the 80's feel to the film was another huge plus. All the kids did fantastic jobs and they felt like real kids with real dialogue. And by "predecessors," I don't just mean the aforementioned TV special. Indeed, while this film is more frightening, captivating, engaging, and simply well-produced than the 90's cult classic, it also helps streamline, normalize, and enhance the source material itself, in all its idiosyncratic glory. This is an incredibly well-realized piece of horror filmmaking with terrific world-building and magnificent performances all over (particularly from those of the film's "Losers Club"). And while I find it may deviate a bit too much from its own remarkably well-established tone here and there, I'd still say it's nothing less than an achievement overall. Expand

Look... I don't want to take anything away from Tim Curry's incredible portrayal of Pennywise... but that aspect aside, the new "It" is just a superior movie.

For me, the major improvement was the visuals. Whether you like CGI or not, there's just so much more that can be accomplished now in the area of visual horror, and I can't think of a pure horror movie that benefits more. There are a number of scares that would have been totally unfilmable in the original. In 1991, we got to see Pennywise's demonic teeth thanks to a mouthpiece you'll find today at a costume store... In 2017, we get visual effects that bring your toothiest nightmares to life. A lot more "reality warping" is possible nowadays, and this movie is a perfect example. Right from the opening where Georgie dies (that doesn't qualify as a spoiler,) you'll see the difference good visual effects can make. This story was *screaming* for a modern-day makeover with the range of effects on hand. The story itself is decently paced, the casting for the Losers Club was impeccable (not to mentioned Henry Bowers and Pennywise,) and the scares are well distributed to keep things interesting. On the minus side, they laid the soundtrack on a little thick... Sometimes, you get the feeling the producers think the audience needs help telling when the scary part kicks in..... This might be the case with many other movies, but not this one. You'll know when it's time to be scared, because it will simply be scary.

I'm actually convinced the adult chapter will be weaker, if only because the kids' chapter was so on point, and puts a lot more energy into shocking the viewer than resolving the story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No one can adapt the saga Stephen King has written accurately because it is simply too big to be adapted into just two movie, but still 'IT' will surely scare you. I just loved how terrifying Pennywise is. I loved how one of my favorite chapters 'The Apocalyptic Rock Fight' is there in the movie with a kickass score in the bacground, I loved the kids who played the characters, I **** loved the BGM and I loved the comic relief; it was hilarious. What I didn't like was the excess of scares. It's not bad, but whenever I remember conjuring, I think that's the way to make a horror movie, the buildup should be so terrifying that you don't have to put that much closeup shots of the entity. Next, I have had the same problem from Andy Muschietti in Mama as well. I hate the overtly done CGI. Keeping it real is more scary than those cartoonish transitions the CGI monster makes.
Apart from that, I loved it. I just love when they do it in the old school way!
PS, I watched in IMAX and yes, it helps!
****Spoilers****
It was decent. I mean, IT feeds on fear and it was somehow justified. They couldn't have put up the orgy thing in the movie or it would have been banned, but yeah, it was a poetic thing and hard hitting at the same time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great film, tame ending, but that's how it has to be as it sets up chapter 2.

PROs:

-Excellent 80s nostalgia
-Actual scares. This surprised me the most. Modern US-made horror films are usually f u c k i n g lame and pathetic. This one had many moments of genuine scares
-Great acting by the kids, especially the lead female
-A good, soft, warm look to the film, that become suitably greasy whenever Pennywise appeared
-Pennywise. The trailers made him look as scary as a fart, but in the film he was a genuine threat. Clowns man, clowns

CONs:

-The fact that 50% of the film is DLC we'll only see next year
-The MUSIC goes LIKE THIS RIGHT BEFORE AND DURING A SCARE - come on... IT would have been 1000 times better without jump scares or jump scare music
-The adults were all generic baddies. I mean, it's the kids show, so whatevs to this one

That's it, for now it's my favourite horror of 2017. Surprisingly good, and I usually hate everything.

When children begin to disappear in the town of Derry, Maine, neighborhood kids band together to square off against Pennywise, an evil clown whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.

This adaptation of Stephen King's novel 'It' makes it's cinematic debut in creepy, disturbing style, with a lot of heart. A complex coming-of-age tale that prefers slow burn creepy horror over predictable jump scares. Although setting the story in the 1980s may be problematic for some, it thankfully doesn't end up being nostalgia pandering for the sake of it. There are visual references to other 80s movies like Gremlins and Nightmare On Elm Street, but rather than copy them, it sticks to its own world and captures that nightmarish atmosphere perfectly.

With a modest $35 million budget, director Andres Muschietti and director of photography Chung-hoon Chung make this film look 3 times better than it should. The film is accompanied by an effective score by Benjamin Wallfisch (A Cure for Wellness), elegant and beautiful but sometimes almost unbearable when ramping up the tension.

For me, the film delivers on what the trailers promised. Scares. From the opening scene with poor little Georgie, to the bathroom blood bath and to Pennywise crawling out of every space you can think of. With so many memorable moments, it feels like a Director's Cut where Andres Muschietti kept everything in, and that may be the reason for some of the pacing problems.

The cast is pretty much perfect. Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise the Dancing Clown goes from charming to twisted in seconds, and i wish there was more of him. Even with all the makeup and costume, his weird ticks and mannerisms come through. With his scenes in particular, i never questioned when CGI was or wasn't being used, as his presence demanded attention. Though it was strange that his powers had no limits, and gave me the impression he could do anything at any moment.

The young cast that make up The Losers Club are great, their chemistry needed to be spot on and they nailed it. Sophia Lillis (playing Beverly Marsh) is probably the standout. My one complaint would be the character of Richie Tozier (played by Finn Wolfhard). His joking around is fine early on, but as the film progressed i was begging for him to shut up and stop ruining dramatic moments with unnecessary quips. However, i felt for this dynamic group as they overcame their fears, loss, bullying, horror and division to defeat the evil gripping their town.

'It' brilliantly captures the haunting memories of childhood fears, and there's nothing like fear to make a paper man crumble.

Each kid has his/her own experience with IT, but the experiences were often comical until the scary ass **** clown showed up. The clown is quite terrifying, but what I found surprisingly awesome was the strangely psychotic, life threatening yet comedic relationship IT has with the kids. He has this dynamic personality that's really interesting. Sure, he's insane and sadistic, but he values his life just like the kids value their's. So it's like a game of cat and mouse between them. The entire cast of kids was phenomenal, especially considering this is a bunch of relatively fresh faces, similar to Stranger Things. Ironically, Finn Wolfhard (Mike Wheeler) stars as Richie in this film.

The depiction of Pennywise is genuinely unsettling and Skarsgard does a fantastic job. The visuals are very well done, but nothing too far above or beyond the average modern horror film these days. However, the soundtrack is a cut above the rest. Benjamin Wallfisch, who has had relatively limited experience scoring blockbusters, really shines in this film. Hopefully he does just as well with Blade Runner 2049. The production value can seem a little corny and some little details don't appear to be exclusively 80's-90's, but it's still worthy of praise.

The premise of the film follows rather closely the novel by Stephen King. To appreciate the plot is to appreciate the novel as well, but the way the film portrays broken homes, abusive parents, and a lonely group of kids just trying to get by through the fellowship of one another is subtle and real. The scenes in which you see the kids being bullied would hit home for anyone who's been bullied themselves. The scenes portraying neglectful and abusive families reminds all of us that some kids in this world go through this every day.

Lastly, praise to Andy Muschietti for making one of the most accurate portrayals of a Stephen King novel to date. This goes up there with Kubrick's "The Shining". This is wholesome, shocking, brutally real, and will have you in tears at the end and reminiscing on that one love you too left to move away to some far off town leaving you alone with your nerdy, loser* friends ;) Can't wait for Chapter Two!

This film manages to capture the spirit of the book fantastically with realistic, grounded performances from the kids who shine individually in their roles, with every character bringing a unique personality to the film. Bill Skaarsgard delivers an outstanding performance as Pennywise who comes across a very disturbing, unpredictable character. The dialogue from the clown is conveyed very sinisterly, and Bill really captures the alien-like, unhuman aurora of the character, making it seem much less like a guy in a clown suit, but as a demon who preys on kids – which is what it’s supposed to be!

The horror in this film is reliant on creepy imagery and well set up jump scares – which are very justified when they happen as they are built on great tension. The only gripe I have with the horror aspect is that it was done perfectly, but felt a bit random as scenes. I feel like there should have been more development on the horror scenes, making them longer, and actually showing the effects it has on the children.

The main drawing point for my praise for the film is the story of the Losers. Their characters are so well developed on screen and so well performed that it makes the horror even better, as you are rooting for these characters to succeed in defeating this evil entity. The whole idea of growing up and having determination and courage is so well emitted from this film – and it really gives off a Stand By Me vibe. This factor makes you want to see as much screen time of the kids as possible.

Overall, I believe this is a very faithful adaptation of Stephen Kings IT, and is a truly great horror movie that I expect will be loved for years. This film gets from me an 85% 8/10.

I found myself really engage throughout the run time of this film. It was really easy for me to get swept away and just have a lot of fun. Let's take a look at some of the best parts:

1.Acting- I was genuinely surprised at just how good the performances in this movie were. Espcially from Skarsgård, Wolfhard, Grazer and Lieberher. It was really easy to buy into every one as characters and to start to see them for who they were portraying. Lieberher played Bill Denbrough, a young teenage boy who has a stutter, when watching this movie it is immediately one of the first things you will notice but as time goes on it began to feel natural and it wasn't noticed anymore. That is due to excellent acting both by Lieberher and those around him. Skarsgard did an amazing job as well, he was intense and creepy. His voice was haunting and his mannerisms sent chills down my spine. In my eyes, he out performed Tim Curry in creating a truly intimidating and terrifying presence.

2.Comedic Relief- So this movie has quite a bit of comedic relief, and a large part of it was from the interactions with the kids. Finn Wolfhard really delivered a solid performance, and was a huge standout in the comedic area. Any time a movie has a comedic relief aspect to it, it has the potential to go horribly wrong. It handled itself really well it was smart and strategic about the timing of it's comedy. Muschietti did a really impressive job with making a huge part of the comedy physical as well. There were scenes when the kid's were in scary situations and one of them would use their inhaler during a suspenseful moment. It all worked and felt seamless to the movie, while really developing the nature of the characters and provided a strong underdog feel.

3.Tone- I was really impressed with how Muschietti created a pretty unique tone for the movie. He did a good job with his color grading and his editing to help create this almost realistic feel. His shots felt natural and grounded, so when stuff was going crazy on screen, I felt like I was there. He used a lot of simple camera tricks to pull off big moments. A lot of the time in modern film, things don't feel natural. Most lighting in movies can almost give off a glossy feeling and give off the "I'm watching a movie" vibe. It didn't feel that way. It was small and it felt like I was apart of the kids group experiencing all of this with them.

4.CGI use- CGI in any film can either help it quite a bit or it can distract in a lot of ways. The CGI with Pennywise the clown felt real. It didn't look cheap or feel that way at all. It just felt like it was all happening. This is because of the amazing practical effects in the movie. Muschietti and Skarsgård worked hard to make Pennywise scary on his own, and then brought it the CGI to really sell the full thing. Now this movie was not perfect. Let's look at what could've been better: 1.Scariness- Now, this might be an unrealistic expectation I had from watching the original It back in my childhood. I just was not scared throughout the run time of It. I never felt the same sense of urgency I do in other horror films. Don't get me wrong, the scares in this movie worked. It was fun to get startled they took their time setting up some really good moments. There was just no sense of tension from scene to scene. It all felt deflated after the big moments. This is also due to the marketing of the movie. I think the marketing made it out to be this terrifying horror movie. Before the screening of Annabelle Creation, they showed a clip of It. This was prefaced with Stephen King talking about how scary this movie was and to only watch "If you dare." This made me feel like It was going to knock me out of my seat, when in reality it was only kind of creepy.

2.Underused Characters- One of the biggest issues I had with It was the feeling that some of the characters weren't used to their full potential. The 1st act of the movie did a beautiful job introducing us to each character, and allowing us to kind of get to know them through their fears and who they are. Toward the 3rd act it felt like some of the characters were tossed to the back. Namely Stan (Wyatt Oleff,), Mike (Chosen Jacobs) and Ben (Jeremy Ray Taylor). While the characters of Bill (Jaeden Lieberger) Richie (Finn Wolfhard) and Eddie (Jack Dylan Grazer) really were prominent. We didn't see as much with Stan, Ben or Mike. The whole premise of the 3rd act was to be together and to stand together against Pennywise. But the team aspect didn't feel inclusive of the others. Overall, I had a great time with It. I thought it was one of the best remakes and adaptations I have seen. It had terrific performances, really entertaining comedic moments with some beautiful looking shots and CGI. It did fall a little toward the 3rd act with the failure to include all of the characters they introduced throughout the first act. It was a perfectly fine scary movie. I am going to give It a B+.

There were couple things in this movie that i really liked! and couple things that i didn't. Okay first of all, movie start very strong the Georgie scene from mini-series was iconic and now they did it little bit different although it was more close to the book. This scene also show us that movie is r-rated. There are some gruesome scenes in this movie for a reason which works for me. And new interpretation of Pennywise gives you a good introduce. But i don't know does it top Tim Currys Pennywise ?? Stars of this movie are the kids H*ly S*** they bring comedy and good acting in this movie. I really hope to see some of them soon in another movie. AND now the BIG QUESTION is this movie scary ? well..no ? it´s actually more thriller than horror but that is just mine opinion. They were jumpscares, but mostly horror was subtle, which is not a bad thing! First and the second act was really good but the third act was a disappointment. Pennywise at the end starts to be more like a another Johnny Depp character than a scary killer. I really liked that they gave us some backstory about the clown but kept it hidden too. And movie show us how this thing kidnaps children. Even thou the movie is not a full 10/10 because there are flaws and things what should be fixed.. but for a Re-imagining of a classic. I say give it a shot. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a bit biased, I have always liked Stephen King's books, and his movies. Yes, even the horrible ones. I do love the original tv series with Tim Curry, but Bill Skarsgard is just as good, but in a more horrific way.

The first thing you have to know, this is only half the book. This is the kid portion of the story. They have already hired the writer and are starting the sequel which is supposed to be the adult story. They even ended the movie with a "chapter one" meaning they knew they were going to do it.

So let's focus on the kids. They are all great, including the mouthy Finn from Stranger Things. The acting was great, the stories for each kid were interesting, and horrifying in their own ways (especially Henry and Beverly's, yes even the bad kid Henry had an interesting and almost heart breaking childhood).

The effects were great, but they didn't lean on them too much, a lot of darkness, a lot of charging attacks, but nothing so horribly CGI that it would jar. Although the greatest effect was Bill Skarsgard himself. The voices he could make, the looks he gave, especially the intensity, were the most horrifying thing in the movie.

The directing was great too. They cut the story down, made it lean by doing something I wasn't sure about, only covering half the book. They also got rid of the group sex scene from the book, definitely made it less skeevy that way. All the decisions I saw made the movie better.

I rank it up there with Kubrick's the Shining as one of my favorite King movies.

The good: Everything. The acting, directing and of course the source material.

The bad: I did feel like I was missing something, but that is because I have read the book and watched the mini-series and it felt strange to not have the adult half of the story. It was a good choice, and that bad is on me, but it was the one thing that made me hesitate.

GO SEE IT!

Plot: 7

Based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel of the same name, this movie is about a group of seven children in Derry, Maine who are terrorised by a mysterious entity known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Skarsgård).

Several months after the death of his six years old brother, Georgie, Bill Denbrough (Lieberher) is unable to move on from his death and believes that he may still be alive. For the summer, Bill recruits his friends to investigate. During the process of their investigation, they made new friends Ben Hanscom, Beverly Marsh (Lillis) and Mike Hanlon.

Ben also learns that the town which they live in have been plagued by unexplained reasons and child disappearance tragedies for centuries. To that end, they are targeted by Pennywise the Dancing Clown which they refer to as “It” and being the one responsible for the murder of Georgie. Bill and his friends need to work together to fight Pennywise to stop the entity from causing more havoc in their town.

If you are a fan of Stephen King’s works, you will enjoy this one. Not only that it’s a good horror movie, it is also best adaptation of his work. What makes this horror movie good is the movie does not lazily rely on jump scares. Instead, the movie focus on building up the suspense from the beginning and having a good writing and story.

Character developments is one of the strong points for this movie. The characters especially the teen casts are very well developed and the chemistry between the cast are great and very natural as if they are real life friends outside of the movie sets. They really deserved this kind of praises for their performance. Kudos to them.

Bill Skarsgård’s take on Pennywise is great and he has done a great and terrifying performance in this role. I’m sure Tim Curry, who played Pennywise in the 1990 miniseries, will be proud of his acting ability. The violence and gore are very well executed and never go overboard with it just to make it better.

Credits should go Andy Muschietti as well for his great direction for this movie as the studios have spent years of trying to make this movie. If it weren’t for him, I do not know who else can make this movie. While the movie is great, there is one tiny flaw from my point of view. I felt the pacing during the first act was a little slow and felt boring from time to time. Thankfully, the pacing of second and third act were better as it goes.

Overall, I really enjoyed this movie despite having not read the actual novel. Since the movie only adapted half of Stephen King’s novel, I believe that there will be sequel to his movie which I think will cover the other half. If the sequel is happening, I will look forward to it (no pun intended). While there are many bad horror movies, this one is not one of them. In fact, I recommended this movie especially for those who are fans of horror movies and Stephen King.

I thought it would be a horrible movie that I would call bad, and mock the whole time at the movies. The movie opens up and I'm cynically poking fun at it, but then the movie kind of starts to take its self less seriously and I really enjoyed that. I like the whole bad ass kid way this movie goes. It really does a good job of making it kind of feel realistic. Most kids that age think they're cool because they cuss and think they're the best thing ever, and that they're so strong. That's how order kids are. They tend to think they're bulletproof, at least I know my friends and I did. The movie is serious/scary when it needs to be, and it's funny and doesn't take itself too seriously when it doesn't have to. Really cool stuff, tbh. Really surprised me. Expand

By far the strongest aspect of It is its acting. Not only are the child protagonists capable of acting well beyond their years, but Bill Skarsgard portrays the best crazed lunatic since Heath Ledger's Joker!

It's hard to find visuals that thrill in this day and age with such state-of-the-art effects having become commonplace, but is manages to deliver with excellence in makeup and camera tricks that made me emit an audible "Woah!"

As a horror film itself, It unfortunately falls flat. The scares are very effective, to be sure, but are too few and far between to sustain lasting tentions. It tries to balance sweet, heartfelt chemistry between the heroes with brutal, graphic terror and it can't seem to get the ratio just right, as the transition is often apparent and forced. It, despite its imperfections, breathes much-needed life into the dying horror genre and is well worth the price of admission.

It is directed by Andy Muschietti, written by Chase Palmer and starring Bill Skarsgrd with some others kids.

It's an adaption from Stephen King's novel, and it's about children begin to disappear in the town of Derry, Maine, a group of young kids are faced with their biggest fears when they square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.

I actually didn't like the young actors, I hated how they made them insult too much, I hated the part about bullies and school life.. sometimes the humor was not funny and unnecessarily.

The performances were really bad, except for Bill Skarsgrd.

The plot was very scary, the movie was good as scaring, but not really good as a whole movie.. some elements were damaged because of the things I mentioned above.

Still I liked It and I'm gonna give it a B+.

Very original. I liked the movie vey much, as it's nice graphicl. It is not the best horror ever, but it is not the worst. Every horor lover should watch it as it has quality.

A lot of the elements from the book are retained and the changes such as moving the setting from the 1950s to the 1980s works for the most part. The kid actors in the movie are beyond fantastic. They are such a great group and they really do feel like friends. There is a slight Stand by Me vibe at times which really works to the movie’s benefit. I was very impressed by Sophia Lillis who plays the young Beverley Marsh and Finn Wolfhard who plays Richie Tozier but they were all excellent. I was actually most concerned about Bill Skarsgård being able to convincingly pull off Pennywise (especially after Tim Curry) but I needn’t have worried because he brought a whole new meaning to word ‘terrifying’. He wasn’t Tim Curry but didn’t try to be which definitely was the right choice. He made the role his own. The story was tweaked in places and there were some changes but overall it retained the feel of the book which I think is much more important than being a direct word-for-word, scene-for-scene adaptation. I can’t really say that IT is a scary movie, even though one of the jumpscares got me once, but I just loved the combination of visuals, cast acting, soundtrack as well as the pace of the plot. To cut a long story short: IT is recommended! Expand

My only complaint is the sheer amount of jokes made during the horror scenes.
