I have yet to read the book, though I do plan on it so I can’t give a comparison on which is better or how accurate it is. Nonetheless, “IT” is its own movie. If you enjoy movies where it’s tense throughout most of the movie with something going on 24/7, this movie is for you. After a tragic event occurs, a team of friends stop at nothing to uncover what is haunting their town and making kids go missing. The movie is skillful at developing the main characters, and is remarkable in being unpredictable as to the events that occur. If dealing with Pennywise the Dancing Clown isn’t already enough, the film incorporates bullies and atrocious parents to exacerbate the ghostbusting children’s problem. “IT” is a movie worth seeing. There were only two things to point out in negative fashion towards the movie, one being rather nitpicky. During the library scene, a red balloon is seen eerily passing behind a pair of chairs with slotted backs. The string to the balloon seemingly hangs low enough to be able to be seen passing behind the chairs, but I don’t believe it was there (in fairness, it could’ve been and I may have not seen it). That point however, belongs more in a “CinemaSins” video rather than a review, but I figured I would include it anyway. The main negative point I have towards the film would be the banal horror movie tactic of using a presence or being to appear very quickly on screen to lure a character off into a separate area. This felt stale after being used several times throughout the movie, especially after the characters made it their duty to never leave one another, yet they are so easily drawn away. I realize they’re children but in that situation, I don’t think it matters.

Pennywise’s appearance is iconic, and frightening. Whilst walking out of the movie theater all that strikes me as memorable, more so than his already memorable appearance would be the sinister glow in his eyes. I feel a sense of unease, as if his eyes are the true essence of evil intentions. Pennywise’s tone is monumentally caustic. He enjoys making you feel fear, and is sarcastic and unserious with whatever you have to say. Having said all of that, without a doubt my favorite thing about Pennywise, the whole film rather; would be the truly inhuman movement he performs. I cannot give a polished description on how it looks, but it is unlike anything I’ve seen before.

This movie obliterates the television adaptation, and I am a huge fan of that version. This is not over the top gory or offensive it is a rated R goonies movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Stephen King's novel as never seen before... As a fan of Stephen King's novel "IT" I must say that i was extremely impressed by the movie. Firstly, the WHOLE cast and creative team behind the movie were perfectly chosen. Bill Skarsgard nails the role of Pennywise in way that you kind of sympathize the character. I was never expecting to like a child eater! All of the Losers Club have done an amazing job on maintaining their character in the correct way! Unlike all the other horror movies in the industry, IT delivers a humorous factor to the audience that breaks the horror part of the movie. In result, it really makes the movie more enjoyable. It also has a very sensitive factor. The fact that Bill is dedicated to find his brother Georgie because he thinks that he is the one to be blamed for his death is amazingly well put in the movie.

There are still some changes from the book, but lets not forget that a book to a movie adaption is not always the same. All in all, Andy has done an amazing job on this movie and everyone else from cast to crew! Good job! You'll float too!

It's been a long time since i read the long version of the book but i remembered the general story.
This incarnation is much better than the last one.
The acting was very good with the kids having good chemistry and the dialogue wasn't dumbed down and politically correct which was nice.
Good humor.
The film was a roller coaster of every emotion with many chills and spills .
It reminded me of the first couple of Freddie movies.
The adults in the film were all just evil stereotypes but it served the purpose of bringing the kids together as did Pennywise who was decent as a villain. It was overly long as was the book and is now set up for part 2.
Enjoyable and you get your moneys worth.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No one can adapt the saga Stephen King has written accurately because it is simply too big to be adapted into just two movie, but still 'IT' will surely scare you. I just loved how terrifying Pennywise is. I loved how one of my favorite chapters 'The Apocalyptic Rock Fight' is there in the movie with a kickass score in the bacground, I loved the kids who played the characters, I **** loved the BGM and I loved the comic relief; it was hilarious. What I didn't like was the excess of scares. It's not bad, but whenever I remember conjuring, I think that's the way to make a horror movie, the buildup should be so terrifying that you don't have to put that much closeup shots of the entity. Next, I have had the same problem from Andy Muschietti in Mama as well. I hate the overtly done CGI. Keeping it real is more scary than those cartoonish transitions the CGI monster makes.
Apart from that, I loved it. I just love when they do it in the old school way!
PS, I watched in IMAX and yes, it helps!
****Spoilers****
It was decent. I mean, IT feeds on fear and it was somehow justified. They couldn't have put up the orgy thing in the movie or it would have been banned, but yeah, it was a poetic thing and hard hitting at the same time.

Due to being the only one in his family who believes Georgie is alive. During his search for Georgie he and his friends start encountering an evil clown named Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard).
As well as having home issues to get through and a horrible bully named Henry Bowers (Nicholas Hamilton) to deal with every day. Being a teenager is hard enough without an shape shifting clown trying to eat you and your friends.
I expected the movie to scar me for life, since the original did. A lot of the movie is quite touching, funny and even fun. Yes, there's some terribly frightening moments but the coming of age sentimental stuff is what I mostly left with. I felt kind of good after the movie rather than losing sleep.
The casting is perfect as is every performance in the movie. Bill Skarsgard is an amazing Pennywise. He's scary as hell, throughout. Probably the best villain performance since Heath Ledger's Joker. What mostly makes the movie fun though is Finn Wolfhard's performance as Richie Tozier, the smart-ass of the Losers Club. He gets all the best lines and is hilarious throughout.
IT is what you get when the director and studio actually care about the source material and want to do it justice. I wish I could say the same for the adaption of Stephen King's Dark Tower, since I read every book. So much more love and thought was obviously put into making this movie good. Which makes IT one of the best Horror and coming of age stories in years. As well as one of the year's best.

This film manages to capture the spirit of the book fantastically with realistic, grounded performances from the kids who shine individually in their roles, with every character bringing a unique personality to the film. Bill Skaarsgard delivers an outstanding performance as Pennywise who comes across a very disturbing, unpredictable character. The dialogue from the clown is conveyed very sinisterly, and Bill really captures the alien-like, unhuman aurora of the character, making it seem much less like a guy in a clown suit, but as a demon who preys on kids – which is what it’s supposed to be!

The horror in this film is reliant on creepy imagery and well set up jump scares – which are very justified when they happen as they are built on great tension. The only gripe I have with the horror aspect is that it was done perfectly, but felt a bit random as scenes. I feel like there should have been more development on the horror scenes, making them longer, and actually showing the effects it has on the children.

The main drawing point for my praise for the film is the story of the Losers. Their characters are so well developed on screen and so well performed that it makes the horror even better, as you are rooting for these characters to succeed in defeating this evil entity. The whole idea of growing up and having determination and courage is so well emitted from this film – and it really gives off a Stand By Me vibe. This factor makes you want to see as much screen time of the kids as possible.

Overall, I believe this is a very faithful adaptation of Stephen Kings IT, and is a truly great horror movie that I expect will be loved for years. This film gets from me an 85% 8/10.

It changes significantly from the book, with several scenes omitted or modified, and although I am saddened by many of my favorite scenes missing, it is understandable that they were cut for time. This movie feels like a Spielberg film given a darker tone, and it did well with the character dynamic. But... "It" is not scary, which is kind of a problem for a movie like this. It didn't have a blatant use of jump scares like in most modern horror and the ones that it has can be surprising, but I found myself more grinning and having fun looking at the decent CGI then filling with dread. I wish the scenes featuring Pennywise took their time to give his character more time to act, as the conversations with him were by far the scariest parts of the film.

But... This film was still a highly enjoyable watch, especially in a crowded theater of people. I would recommend going to it on a busy day. This film succeeded, but in character rather then scares. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing for you all depends on how you like your movies.

I'd give "IT" a 7/10

There were couple things in this movie that i really liked! and couple things that i didn't. Okay first of all, movie start very strong the Georgie scene from mini-series was iconic and now they did it little bit different although it was more close to the book. This scene also show us that movie is r-rated. There are some gruesome scenes in this movie for a reason which works for me. And new interpretation of Pennywise gives you a good introduce. But i don't know does it top Tim Currys Pennywise ?? Stars of this movie are the kids H*ly S*** they bring comedy and good acting in this movie. I really hope to see some of them soon in another movie. AND now the BIG QUESTION is this movie scary ? well..no ? it´s actually more thriller than horror but that is just mine opinion. They were jumpscares, but mostly horror was subtle, which is not a bad thing! First and the second act was really good but the third act was a disappointment. Pennywise at the end starts to be more like a another Johnny Depp character than a scary killer. I really liked that they gave us some backstory about the clown but kept it hidden too. And movie show us how this thing kidnaps children. Even thou the movie is not a full 10/10 because there are flaws and things what should be fixed.. but for a Re-imagining of a classic. I say give it a shot. Expand

So why didn't they include more dialogue? In the book, Pennywise torments the kids rather than relying on jump scares. Plus some of Pennywise's dialogue is inaudible. The kids yammer on at 30 words a second sometimes. Clarity goes a long way.

The film makers traded in most of the psychological aspects for cheap jump scares (which weren't very scary). Some of the changes were good, but its too much of a generic scare flick to be great.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't usually watch horror movies and if I do it's more comedy horror in the vein of Final Destination. However, I had heard that this movie was really good, so I thought "Why not? I'll give it a try" and I LOVED It ;). The actors were brilliant, the humour was great. The horror aspects didn't scare me as much as I thought they would; they could've made it a little more scary rather than just creepy. And I'm still pretty salty about it ending with the logo being overlaid with the words Chapter One, but apart from that, this is a really good movie. Thumbs up!
Pros: Cons: - Acting & Characters - More creepy than actually scary - Humour & Writing - Sequel teaser ending (actually an annoyance) - Music

A lot of people say this one is better because it is better madeIT is an excellent movie for me. I have to say though, even though it is my "Movie of 2017", I don't actually think it is better or scarier than the original, the mini series. A lot of people say this one is better because it is better made and the other one is not scary at all. Well, from a technological perspective this one is better, of course. However, this movie does not actually convince me of being a "real" movie about IT. The original was composed in a way because of its lack of budget as well as its score that it felt a lot more like they filmed real people and then when Pennywise came the scare came through its subtlety as everything seemed normal and then suddenly that one thing at the right time with its music came and that was always really frightening for me. It is not that this movie is not creepy at all but that's about it. It is nothing I can be scared of while the original traumatized me for over 20 years. The actors of this one were very good and of course I can only praise Bill Skarsgard's role as IT/Pennywise. He once said he does not want to do a Tim performance but a Bill perfomance and that was fine. He was "different" and he was good at ... IT. One complaint I have though might seem weird: Sophia Lillis is a cute girl but just as Chloe Grace Moretz in the Carrie remake she has the same problem: If we really go for a faithful Stephen King book portrayal these actors are not convincing. Both Chloe and Sophia are pretty girls. However, both Carrie and Beverly are characters in their own respective books that have a lot of trouble and are not popular at all. We live in a world though where a lot of people in society are already interested in you if you are just good looking enough already. And for those two girls it does not really convince that they are this highly unpopular. It does not mean "pretty girls cannot have problems", that is nonsense and not what I want to say at all. It is just not overly convincing simply because society with a lot of superficially thinking people would always present a lot of people would still be okay with them for merely superficial reasons. Sophia did a great job still, she was doing absolutely fine for her interpretation of Beverly, I think she was one of the better actors but this was something I though of that should be pointed out because a lot of people praise the movie for being so faithful to the book - even though it also has moments were the mini series is closer and not just vice-versa - so I wanted to say something about something being convincing as well as close to the original (that being said of course the old Bev's actress was also cute but she seemed more convincing as troubled girl who is mocked, probably because she was not presented "as tough" as we get to see Sophia in her first few scenes). What else can I see about this movie though: Bill's whole process of trying to cope with Georgie's death was nicely done. That being said I did not like the overall gory way the movie was presented. There are no-gos for me also in fiction and this movie was already touching the limit. This is also one of the reasons why I do not really find the movie really scary: The movie is so over the top that it loses its effect to me. The first "jumpscare" scene of the projector looks ridiculously over the top in my eyes, I do not like it at all. Other scenes - what IT says in the well house to Bill, which is my favourite scene in the movie - were so awesome instead that they pretty much carry the entire movie for me. So it was actually some kind of mix of what worked for me very well while others were to over-exaggerated. The rest was kinda okay. It definitely was by far of a better movie than I expected it to be and I can definitely recommend it to everyone, I just think those who bash the original should do that by just thinking about the technological perspective of that Tim Curry's Pennywise was not faithful to the book and thus are less impressed by it (though most actually like him nonetheless). But who knows, maybe other people are just scared by different things, that's entirely possible after all.

Broken down:

Watch ... IT.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finally! A remake that is better than the original!
What did this remake do better? Lets see:
1. Better characters and acting.
2. Better deaths. Especially Georgie's and Patrick's.
3. Better version of the story (by the not king of horror).
4. PENNYWISE IS GREATER THAN TIM CURRY'S PERFORMANCE!

But today I was finally able to see it, the longed for and well received adaptation of one of my favorite novels of Stephen King and of all my life without a doubt.

Now is the time to analyze it and ask if all the fuss was worth it.

This new adaptation that for me is not a remake, without a doubt takes the source material more seriously and it gives more fidelity to the final product, that is a plus, although we must admit that in the end that is irrelevant for those who have not read the book.

The film looks good, the production work is remarkable, the atmosphere and ambient feels totally right, the music, while it's not remarkable is right in all the moments.
In general the whole design works well, however the city does not have the weight of evil that abounded in the novel and although the film mentions it, the truth is that they are very poor mentions.

Then we move on to one of the most important aspects of the film; The cast of children, I admit that the chemistry between the seven is genuine, otherwise I think it would have seriously affected the film, but there is something I disliked and it was that the script makes Bill and Beverly the most relevant characters of the seven, all of them have their moment to shine and they all have their scene being attacked by It except for Richie, however as I said, the film puts all the weight of the protagonism in the two of them.

Also there is another thing that bothers me and I really do not usually mention something about this kind of thing but I don't understand the need to change Mike's story and make him a character that only adds himself to the mix up to the end, he was the one who investigated Derry's history, something that Ben does here and I do not understand it, why did they excluded him that way? they deliberately took away a very important plot weight from the only important character of color in this novel and that is quite upsetting.

There was a lot of mentions about Finn Wolfhard stealing the whole movie but I don't see it that way, many times he is just the comic punchline and almost every time he feels forced, I don't deny that the kid fully adopts the character, but the rhythm and the timing of the narrative does not help him a lot of the times.
I have my objections but I admit that they make the movie work.

The other important element is obviously Pennywise, and it was a fact that Bill Skarsgård had a mountain to climb because regardless of the opinions that you may have about the miniseries, Tim Curry's Pennywise is iconic, but you have to give credit to Skarsgård, he really did his own and gave a proper interpretation to the character, he adds it a different and quite obscure identity in moments, the scene in which he murders Georgie proves it, the way he stares at him in silence with his gaze lost is quite strange and unnerving to say the least. I really liked his design and clothing, faithful to the book.
Will he become so iconic? I doubt it, but he has all my respect because he really did a great work.

In general terms, It: Chapter One is a solid adaptation, they took the material with seriousness and Andy Muschietti delivers a movie with a good direction, better than what we saw in Mama, although the film has several mistakes, especially with the rhythm and that its lenght that is somewhat excessive, the film is entertaining, with good scares, a respectable adaptation, one of King's best, totally.
It is not the masterpiece of horror that many proclaim, but it is definitely a movie that deserves your time and attention.

Bill Skarsgard (my Favourite blood eater from the Netflix show Hemlock Grove) does right out with that in the famous opening scene with the paper boat and Georgie's Arm, in this remake there isn't a doubt in the viewers mind that this isn't a clown, but a being that just has the face of one, and Georgie finds that out first hand or should i say arm. so we find the losers slowly coming to grips with talking to a girl, dealing with the loss of a brother, finding body parts, and being followed by a creepy clown that nom nom noms on people ... you know normal kid stuff. so slowly through out the movie each child is presented with their biggest fear, we have Stan, Ben, Bev, Richie, Eddie, Mike, and bill.

The Acting in this movie was some of the best child actors i have ever seen, and its hard to remember they are child actors. although we are blessed to see Finn Wolfhard from "Stranger Things" as Richie, his experience shows in this film almost like he is directing the others off screen.

9/10 for this nostalgic remake. an amazing movie for those who like a good scare, are a fan of Stephen King. or just want something odd and out of the box, IT delivers and all of that and more, again i cant get over thanking the Writers for this one, it could be just as cheesy and not scary as the original but boy, was i wrong

Never watch the original, never read the book, watched the first one, the story is kinda dissapointed me. However, it's a fun movie, and fresh escape from all those Marvel movies.

The second one, pretty much the same. But a little bit more "satisfying" from the first one. The origin of Pennywise was never told clearly, just vague, and came from "million years ago". This is my only gripe for both movie.

But overall, both movies still fun, I wouldn't call it a "horror" movie per se. I've seen more disturbing and scarier movie than both It movies. I actually feel like watching The Goonies all over again, with modern touch and very well done VFX.

And that final fight between the losers and Pennywise, obviously gamers would just love it. So cool and so epic.

However, a year-and-a-half after seeing it, I finally realized what it is missing: melancholy. The 1990 made-for-TV adaptation did a good job of capturing the melancholy that the main characters feel growing up in an impoverished town with indifferent or even cruel parents. The 2017 version ignores this melancholy and instead tries to make the main characters funny and cute, a la Stranger Things; this attempt at humor feels too forced and contrived. The cast is absolutely outstanding, every single one of the children put in a great performance, and each of them are extremely likeable in their individual roles. However, they were nothing compared to Bill Skarsgard's oscar- worthy performance as Pennywise. He is creepy, scary to look at and just the perfect actor for this role. The story is also really excellent, it has you hooked from the start. However my one complaint about this film is the scary- aspect. Sure, it's creepy but not once was I really frightened. This is possibly to do with the jump scares, as most of them felt comedic rather than scary, which I think was due to the direction. However other than that I can't really find anything else about It that I didn't like, this is definitely one of my favourites this year. Expand

There are certainly a few flaws such as Mike Hanlon disappointingly given the shaft when it came to character development and dialogue as well as a couple of scare scenes suffering from less-than-optimal CGI.

But everything else was absolutely top-notch from the acting, the directing, to the forbidding atmosphere. If I had to describe this movie, it would probably be a combination of the demonic spook-house thrills of The Conjuring series combined with the setting of Stranger Things and the antics found in 80’s nostalgic classics such as The Goonies.

Even though the trailers have sold It as a horror film and while it is indeed a solid horror film, this is not the movie’s strongest attribute. That is because at it’s heart the movie is a touching coming-of-age story with Pennywise serving more as a metaphor for the traumas and personal issues that each of the members of the Loser’s club must overcome. I think it’s due to this reason that the movie not only ends up being one of the best King adaptations ever, but possibly one of the best movies of the year period.

Pretty solid remake. IT was well made and I really did enjoy watching it. While most remakes out there do not do the original justice, IT 2017, wasn’t alright. Although I still love the original, I’d definitely see IT again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a bit biased, I have always liked Stephen King's books, and his movies. Yes, even the horrible ones. I do love the original tv series with Tim Curry, but Bill Skarsgard is just as good, but in a more horrific way.

The first thing you have to know, this is only half the book. This is the kid portion of the story. They have already hired the writer and are starting the sequel which is supposed to be the adult story. They even ended the movie with a "chapter one" meaning they knew they were going to do it.

So let's focus on the kids. They are all great, including the mouthy Finn from Stranger Things. The acting was great, the stories for each kid were interesting, and horrifying in their own ways (especially Henry and Beverly's, yes even the bad kid Henry had an interesting and almost heart breaking childhood).

The effects were great, but they didn't lean on them too much, a lot of darkness, a lot of charging attacks, but nothing so horribly CGI that it would jar. Although the greatest effect was Bill Skarsgard himself. The voices he could make, the looks he gave, especially the intensity, were the most horrifying thing in the movie.

The directing was great too. They cut the story down, made it lean by doing something I wasn't sure about, only covering half the book. They also got rid of the group sex scene from the book, definitely made it less skeevy that way. All the decisions I saw made the movie better.

I rank it up there with Kubrick's the Shining as one of my favorite King movies.

The good: Everything. The acting, directing and of course the source material.

The bad: I did feel like I was missing something, but that is because I have read the book and watched the mini-series and it felt strange to not have the adult half of the story. It was a good choice, and that bad is on me, but it was the one thing that made me hesitate.

GO SEE IT!

I loved this horror! The kids interacted well with eachother and it doesn't feel fake. Pennywise also was a real threat instead of being a standard movie villain.

Based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel of the same name, this movie is about a group of seven children in Derry, Maine who are terrorised by a mysterious entity known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Skarsgård).

Several months after the death of his six years old brother, Georgie, Bill Denbrough (Lieberher) is unable to move on from his death and believes that he may still be alive. For the summer, Bill recruits his friends to investigate. During the process of their investigation, they made new friends Ben Hanscom, Beverly Marsh (Lillis) and Mike Hanlon.

Ben also learns that the town which they live in have been plagued by unexplained reasons and child disappearance tragedies for centuries. To that end, they are targeted by Pennywise the Dancing Clown which they refer to as “It” and being the one responsible for the murder of Georgie. Bill and his friends need to work together to fight Pennywise to stop the entity from causing more havoc in their town.

If you are a fan of Stephen King’s works, you will enjoy this one. Not only that it’s a good horror movie, it is also best adaptation of his work. What makes this horror movie good is the movie does not lazily rely on jump scares. Instead, the movie focus on building up the suspense from the beginning and having a good writing and story.

Character developments is one of the strong points for this movie. The characters especially the teen casts are very well developed and the chemistry between the cast are great and very natural as if they are real life friends outside of the movie sets. They really deserved this kind of praises for their performance. Kudos to them.

Bill Skarsgård’s take on Pennywise is great and he has done a great and terrifying performance in this role. I’m sure Tim Curry, who played Pennywise in the 1990 miniseries, will be proud of his acting ability. The violence and gore are very well executed and never go overboard with it just to make it better.

Credits should go Andy Muschietti as well for his great direction for this movie as the studios have spent years of trying to make this movie. If it weren’t for him, I do not know who else can make this movie. While the movie is great, there is one tiny flaw from my point of view. I felt the pacing during the first act was a little slow and felt boring from time to time. Thankfully, the pacing of second and third act were better as it goes.

Overall, I really enjoyed this movie despite having not read the actual novel. Since the movie only adapted half of Stephen King’s novel, I believe that there will be sequel to his movie which I think will cover the other half. If the sequel is happening, I will look forward to it (no pun intended). While there are many bad horror movies, this one is not one of them. In fact, I recommended this movie especially for those who are fans of horror movies and Stephen King.

I thought it would be a horrible movie that I would call bad, and mock the whole time at the movies. The movie opens up and I'm cynically poking fun at it, but then the movie kind of starts to take its self less seriously and I really enjoyed that. I like the whole bad ass kid way this movie goes. It really does a good job of making it kind of feel realistic. Most kids that age think they're cool because they cuss and think they're the best thing ever, and that they're so strong. That's how order kids are. They tend to think they're bulletproof, at least I know my friends and I did. The movie is serious/scary when it needs to be, and it's funny and doesn't take itself too seriously when it doesn't have to. Really cool stuff, tbh. Really surprised me. Expand

By far the strongest aspect of It is its acting. Not only are the child protagonists capable of acting well beyond their years, but Bill Skarsgard portrays the best crazed lunatic since Heath Ledger's Joker!

It's hard to find visuals that thrill in this day and age with such state-of-the-art effects having become commonplace, but is manages to deliver with excellence in makeup and camera tricks that made me emit an audible "Woah!"

As a horror film itself, It unfortunately falls flat. The scares are very effective, to be sure, but are too few and far between to sustain lasting tentions. It tries to balance sweet, heartfelt chemistry between the heroes with brutal, graphic terror and it can't seem to get the ratio just right, as the transition is often apparent and forced. It, despite its imperfections, breathes much-needed life into the dying horror genre and is well worth the price of admission.
