This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

I think Iron Man is the gatekeeper for comic book films. It's good, not great, but it established a bar that modern comic book films have to match. It's a solid movie but people do tend to overrate it.

The first third of the movie is so bad: so much arrogance, US propaganda and unrealistic. Later on it gets better, because the things mentioned above are reduced drastically and the nice action and visual effects take over.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Generic but enjoyable.

Iron Man is the first film of what is now widely known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is action-packed, humorous but solidified the aspects of what would quickly be framed as the "generic comic-book film" - with an antagonist that parallels the main protagonist, but is significantly less interesting and developed, a three act structure that ends with a big CGI battle, comedy inserted into inappropriate moments, and a surface level commentary of society, and a lack of any real diversity.

Tony Stark is the best part of the film, all thanks to Robert Downey Junior's insatiable charisma, thus in spite of Tony being a largely unlikeable character, Robert's ooze of charm makes it difficult not to like him.

It looks fabulous, the whole film is very slickly made with top-notch special effects(which look like time and effort was really put into it), awesome-looking futuristic gadgets and Iron Man's suit will be a guaranteed delight to anybody who is familiar or loves anything to do with the superhero. There is a pulsating soundtrack that adds much to the tension of the first half of the story and the enormously fun action sequences, which are exciting and tense with expertly choreography. The script crackles with smart humour that doesn't go overload, all of which is laugh-out-loud funny, yet the hostage plotting that takes up the first part of the film is intelligently written and somehow avoids being over-serious or over-familiar. The story has enough to allow you to emotionally connect with Iron Man(who I've always considered one of Marvel's most interesting and multi-faceted characters) and has a clever mix of the comic's 1960s origins and the effects of contemporary war, which will provide plenty of nostalgia while also feeling relevant. Jon Favreau does a great job directing, he never loses control of the story and he doesn't do anything too fussy. Robert Downey Jnr's performance as Tony Stark/Iron Man is a power-house and one of his best, doing much with the smart dialogue while making the emotional side of the characters wholly believable. Gwyneth Paltrow is a good, loyal side-kick with wise-cracks that don't come across as annoying and Jeff Bridges is surprisingly very good in an against-type role. Personally, the only disappointments were the useless character of Christine Everheart and the somewhat rushed and over-blown finale that wasn't quite as thrilling as it could have been, other than that Iron Man was a classy addition to the Marvel cannon and a great film on its own. 9/10 Bethany Cox Expand

Mr. Downey Jr. (is one still a junior when senior has expired?) gives a passable performance but, in effect, is playing Mr. Downey Jr. in a metal suit. I liked evil Lebowski.

I was extremely disappointed by the ending. Does anyone remember the days when a superhero's identity was a secret? Now, of course, the world is populated by people whose every waking moment is posted online to all and sundry. Thus, they despise secrets.

Superhero movies all must, positively, out of necessity have a secondary character who is aware of the hero's real identity. For this reason I gave it a lower score. Otherwise, entertaining.

The first MCU film. Period.
Honestly, we always think that the past is better than the present. And, hell yeah, it works for “Iron Man”. Almost. What exactly keeps it working? Firstly, Jon Favreau & his crew’s groundbreaking achievements in a strong storytelling perspective for Tony’s character arc: Tony is the heart of the film and he proves it every single second. Secondly, incredibly well-cast actors: Robert Downey Jr. perfectly captured the nature of Tony, his charisma delivers everything you need from the character. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges & Terrence Howard (and Jon Favreau, of course) are all in the same perfect zone. We could get more of them but that’s how the story built. Thirdly, the atmosphere and music never let you get out of the MCU world. Maybe one or two times the VFX were a bit off, but sometimes visuals are better than in many newest blockbusters. 9/10. The best MCU start it could’ve ever had.

There is very little magical realism in the movie and the characters as well as how they progress and change through the film is all very believable. The acting, dialogue, story and directing are all fantastic and set the bar high for future Marvel installments to come. Iron Man is one of the highest rated movies in the whole universe, and is rightfully so; this is a movie that’s not only really good but also has a lot of re-watch value to it, something that even great movies released recently don’t have. Iron Man may have been released 13 years ago, but it remains an icon and a classic in its own right. If you want to watch a superhero origin movie that doesn’t have an abundance of fancy special effects or a protagonist with amazing powers and abilities, Iron Man is a good bet for you. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had no interest in superhero movies until the release of Avengers: Infinity War. I had decided to watch all the MCU movies so that I could catch up before Endgame releases. This was the very first one in the list and also the very reason why I stuck on this franchise, because I knew that if the very first movie had so much to offer, I'd really be in for some good time with all these movies. And since this movie attempted to do something new (that I'll talk about later), Tony Stark already became my favourite MCU character.

First of all, the acting in this movie is superb. I've heard people say that Robert Downey Jr's acting is quite mediocre, but here I felt as though it was terrific. He actually feels like he's the character. If he wanted he didn't have to do the finger snapping thing while waiting for Jarvis to download the data for the suit upgrades, he didn't have to sound nonchalant every time something great happened and he didn't even have to make those quirky one liners in every scene. But he still did all of that. And with just that personality combined with character development he managed to completely steal the show.

Alongside the acting another thing that made this movie great is the idea. Until now we used to see superheroes to be like "I have to keep my identity a secret UwU". But this is finally the movie where the superhero comes in front of the press and says "I'm Iron Man!". Also the superheroes are shown to have very high morals who can never be wrong and inspire other people to be like them. You will never expect them to be self centred and care-free. Of course nowadays this is rapidly becoming an idea of showing superheroes to be morally corrupt, but this isn't what this movie is saying. It's just a man with a super suit who fights bad people entirely out of his own choice without any concern of what others say.

The CGI and cinematography is another thing that makes this movie so great. If you just see the plot, what is there? A man gets attacked by terrorists, he builds a suit to save himself, he upgrades it and becomes the superhero, the bad guy who wants to take over the world finds out his old suit, hero-villain fight, hero wins, roll credits. Most of this was shown in the trailer itself. But what mainly carries it is the visual appeal and tone, something that MCU movies are still replicating (Captain Marvel smh). It is fun to see Iron Man just do something on the big screen. It's so visually satisfying to see him failing the designs and trying to fix them. Even the scene in which Stane pulls Iron Man's Arc Reactor was scary, but fun to watch.

But of course this movie isn't without its fair share of flaws. For starters the movie seems to be taken way too lightly. Iron Man kills all those terrorists but faces no consequences. Iron Man flies among US Army but faces no consequences (sure he does reveal he's Iron Man in the end but before that it's very little). The movie also spends time showing Tony's life before and after being Iron Man that it just seems like padding the runtime, although the padding makes the movie somewhat comfortable to watch. Like I mentioned above, this movie severely lacks content. Pepper learning about Stane being the villain was also a very "Oh no! Anyway..." type reveal.

Iron Man is a perfect origin story that is satisfying to watch and also something fun. It's a good thing that this is the first movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, since there are many movie franchises where the first movie itself is bad (The Fast and the Furious, Transformers, Fantastic Four, Mortal Kombat etc). I'm glad I made this decision. Back when I saw this movie, Iron Man had become my favourite superhero. I used to talk and act like Tony Stark, that's the impact it left on me.

The movie begins humorously with the billionaire war pig Tony Stark palling around with some soldiers returning him to base after a successful weapon showcase. Suddenly, they are ambushed by what appears to be Al-Qaeda. Their Cars are, blown to shreds, and their men quickly get turned into swiss cheese. In the ensuing chaos, Tony tries to escape but ends up getting pinned down behind the cover of a rock. Then, suddenly a missile drops on the battlefield. Right before detonation, Tony realizes that it is his very own missile that the terrorists are using then Tony is blown to hell. Upon wake, he realizes that he has a glorified microwave for a Heart. Then the leader busts in and asks Tony to build his weapons of war for their side. Tony refuses, so they torture him. Tony then agrees, but he has more sinister plans in mind. Instead, Tony builds a suit made of Iron with rockets, flamethrowers, and a jetpack. He then smashes his way through the enemy base like a Bull in a china shop! The opposition's bullets are like bouncy balls to him while his weapons are demolishing them in this very well directed action scene. This suit that Tony builds is causing so much havoc in the base that it is about to blow. So, Right when it’s about to hit the fan Tony jets out of there. The suit can handle high altitude though, so he lands far out in the sand. Luckily for Tony, the army is right there to send him back home, but when he returns home will he be the same war pig or a new humanitarian Stark? You have to watch to find out. Anyways, I have to give this movie a thumbs up for its exceptional plot that keeps the viewer entertained with its diverse scenarios, loveable and hateable characters, and captivating action Scenes that leave the audience on the edge of their seats! I also have to praise this film for setting the groundwork for every other MCU movie to come. It lays the foundation for the rest of the franchise with the end credits scene which no other film before this had done. This is surprising since the only new thing Iron Man did was give the audience a reason to watch the end credits. That is so simple but so game-changing at the same time. Along with that, even if you didn't sit through the end credits, the initial ending was still a monumental twist for superhero films at the time. Iron Man is a 5 out of 5 masterpieces that everyone needs to watch at least once because it started the entire MCU and a great movie in its own right!

Notable Actors: Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man/Tony Stark), Jeff Bridges (Obadiah Stane)

His character has an arc. At first he doesn't really care what impact his weapons have on the world, but then he realizes that what he was doing was wrong, and he tries to change things. I liked that. I was afraid he was going to be a rich, arrogant **** you can't relate to the entire movie, but thankfully that's not the case.

This movie was a good way of starting the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

My first taste of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A great start!

I absolutely enjoyed seeing 'Iron Man'. Robert Downey Jr. is terrific as the titular character, who is a blast to watch throughout - love the design! The plot is very entertaining, I like how it tells the story; simply, but very effectively. Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow, meanwhile, all add to the film with good performances.

The special effects are very neat, as are all the action sequences. I will say the score isn't the strongest, at least in terms of what I'd expect from this sorta film. I wouldn't say it's bad per se, just not as spectacular as it could've (should've?) been; especially with someone like Ramin Djawadi composing. I love a film with great music, so hopefully that improves as I watch the MCU expand.

I know, I'm extremely late to this particularly party but happy to finally begin watching.

This movie is great origin story. It is maybe my favorite Marvel movie. I love Iron Man and this movie. These are all good things:
1. All characters are great and memorable. You know every character has personality and we are emotionally connected with main characters. Tony is best character in this movie and probably the best character in hole MCU. Tony is villain in the beginning and his arc in this movie is **** great. For me, he is better then Steve, because he actually changed and Tony actually has an arc.
2. Plot is the best!!! It is connected with his arc in the best way. I like how Green Lantern is trying to copy this movie, but main character does not have any goals. It is funny because Tonys goals when he gets back from cave is press conference and cheese burger. It is really compelling and fun.
3. Villain is really good. I know that everyone thinks this movies villain is just CGI monster, but he is really good. Obadiah is Tonys idol and he looks up to him, but he changes in cave. When he gets out of cave he decides to stop selling weapons. He made just one and it is Iron Man, but only he knows how to use it. Obadiah is really jealous and nearly kills Tony just to get Iron Man. And when he made his suit and Tony confronted him he was weapon that he could become. It is great, but Obadiahs massacre in final battle is not great. I give it 9/10.

P.S. Music is the best of the greatly very good best. And music is only reason why second movie is 6/10.

It's always fun to go back to the MCU's humble beginnings to see how the small seeds were planted.

After the wonderful send-off to the character that was Endgame, coming back to the first Iron Man and seeing Tony Stark build his first armor, I can't help but feel like amazed by what this franchise was able to achieve.

I knew Tony Stark had a big arc over the course of all the movies, but I didn't realise just how much he had really changed until this rewatch.

Tony telling Yinsen that he has no family hits different after Endgame.

Despite Favreau's initial decision in choosing a fresh face, he ended up delighted due to his charismatic, natural and comfortable attitude. He did not realise it yet, but he was moulding with the right measures a whole superhero cinematic universe which lasted until today and still goes for more."
...
The filmmakers took the proper time to introduce a character whose production was undecided since New Line Pictures argued that the main character [Iron Man] had no potential to be brought up to the theatres. Therefore, planning from scratch a prosperous superhero who was not related to the typical Fantastic Four, X-Men or Spider-Man [famous superhero films of the 2000s] was quite a challenge. However, the director unquestionably demonstrated his skills at the visual effects, the rock metal music, the accurate dialogues for each moment and finally, the remarkable development of each persona. How exactly?
...
Establishing the visual effects of a high-speed-altitude enthusiast was marvellous, considering the time of the creation. The way Favreau adjusted the Iron Man gave numerous innovative perspectives of a superhero while in battle. If we first watched the 'Spidey Sense', then it was time to behold the flying upper and upper. What an achievement ladies and gentleman! Taking into account the sound effect, it was splendid in every single way because it gave decent time to evoke emotions, from sadness to awesomeness, it permitted to feel the sensation of building a strong armour or flying as fast as possible. Man! That AC/DC hard rock music was well-defined to this fascinating character. Did I mention that Downey's son is growing on music? He has a band, and it's called "The Dose Band". Just watch the School of Rock's report. Probably there is where the influence came by. On the other hand, this film gives such iconic quotes which will live on our memory: "Is it better to be feared or respected?", "Sometimes you gotta run before you can walk", "I am Iron Man". WOW! What potential we have got here! Finally, but not least, the impeccable action scenes and drama ones were the highest achieves Iron Man had got. The sequence in the cavern traped with Dr Yinsen serves to the protagonist time to reflect on himself and the responsibility he has in protecting the world against high-tech diseases.
...
Plus, the very unusual but gorgeous chemistry between Tony Stark and his secretary/companion Pepper Potts is another striking feature which is not considered at all was. When Kevin Feige, the current president of Marvel Studios, was asked about his desition about casting Gwyneth Paltrow he confessed the following: "Gwyneth is the embodiment of a leading lady. She brings intelligence, poise and an incredible range of talent to this role". Throughout the movie, these two characters happened to be facing their professional and sentimental relationship naturally owing to the Iron Man. The way Pepper Potts clings on to the fact that his beloved boss is in troublesome scenarios, it's just pure tenderness and shows how much potential this couple has.
...
The cast assuredly introduced not only convincing performances but strong characters which will be handy for the following Marvel instalments, just watching Jeff Bridges as the badass Iron Monger is superb! The film producer nailed it! If someone asked me about the flaws it has presented, probably I would say the dark tone, some petit explicit scenes (bearing in mind there are children as spectators) and the lack of sense of humour at times. Still, it is mostly pure perfection.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Iron Man was the start of the MCU and a great start for something that feels like it will not last. The main character Tony Stark gets kidnapped and makes a suit out of scraps. To me, it's impressive to make a suit of armor in a cave with little technology (i'm not very creative, that's why I say this) Also, like most good movies, the guy who is closest to the main character ends up being the bad guy, the bad guy being Obadiah Stane. He stole the Iron Man Mark 1 from the terrorists that kidnapped Tony and uses the technology/appearance and adds some of his own touches like a missile launcher and a minigun, he makes his own suit of armor. Once its done, Obadiah want to eliminate Tony with it. Since Tony fixed the problems with the Mark 1 and Mark 2 and he removed Obadiah's targeting system he defeats the Iron Monger. Expand

Easily the best of the franchise. In fact, I'd go as far to say one of the best of the 20 something MCU chapters. Future efforts became a bit tiresome (enough with the AC/DC) but this one was damn near perfect.

A proper introduction to Marvel's titular hero, we're given an impressive visual understanding of Tony Stark's lifestyle, wanton personality, and eventual spiritual rebirth that shapes him into becoming Iron Man. This is all in part to Robert Downey Jr., who will undoubtedly go down as the greatest casting call of all time. He is the living embodiment of everything Tony Stark should be, and the film's primary objective should be to realize and draw upon that. And it most certainly does. Expand

Whoever decided to cast RDJ should get the biggest raise that has ever been given; this movie would be considerably worse without him in the title role. Most, if not all of the films funniest lines or key emotional moments would fall flat if not for him. It’s paced and directed very well, too. It never really gets boring and ends right about where it should. However, it’s held back by a weak villain, a somewhat undercooked romance, and a lack of emotional impact outside of the first third where Tony is kidnapped. But it can be quickly forgiven because of its smart and funny script combined with the power of its perfectly chosen lead. Expand

Iron Man was the first film in the now famous and highly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe. This film is insanely entertaining and possibly one of the best comic book movies ever made. This film is filled with so many things that make this film so vibrant and entertaining throughout. Lets start with the characters. Tony Stark, famously played by Robert Downey Jr is simply amazing. He is such a charismatic and fun character to watch that you simply wonder how RDJ does it. Robert Downey Jr is incredibly charming in this film and the character's blend of sarcasm, self-loathing and regret throughout simply makes this performance flawless. The supporting cast also do very well within the film. Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane may not have the most character depth and motivation but Jeff Bridges plays the character with such precision that you can't help but be entertained. Also Terrance Howard as James Rhodes is extremely underrated and personally I believe he is as good if not better then Don Cheadle as James Rhodes. Also Gwyneth Paltrow, who i'm not exactly the biggest fan of was very good in this film. Another great aspect of this film is that it is a very compelling and original origin story. Tony's story ark of going from a sarcastic, arrogant and narcissistic individual to learning the fault of his ways and realising that his actions and motivations hurt people is very compelling. Also the visuals are stunning. You can barely tell this film is over 10 years old due to how well the visual effects look. Iron Man flying through the sky looks as real then as it does now 10 years later. My one criticism is that the film fails to offer a good 3rd act. This is where the film really goes down hill. The main problem with it is there is no reason to why it is really happening. The motivations of the villain are unclear to the point why you are questioning the reason the final battle is happening. Its very bothering but not to the point where the film suffers too much. But it does help that this bad 3rd act is followed by a terrific ending which I won't spoil. Overall Iron Man is a very compelling comic book film which I believe could be one of the best ever. Expand

So the plot is a billionaire Tony Stark is showing off weapons of mass destruction in Afghanistan but during his visit gets kidnapped and brought to a cave to build a bomb since he got shot there is now a magnet in his chest which is stopping strap all from reaching his heart instead of building a bomb he builds an iron suit to help him escape once back in New York he builds a better version of the suit and his partner Obadiah Stane wants to steal his technology so he steals starks magnet and has a bigger version of the suit so Tony gets his back up heart and flies him into space freezing him and dropped back to earth only to get electrocuted to death by Tony’s secutary Pepper Potts falls in love with her saves the day and tells the world he’s iron man. When you get down to it it’s a pretty typical superhero story but it’s made better by the great soundtrack and the even better protagonist Tony Stark. My only complaint is a big one however the third act is really bad for one we didn’t even see the big iron suit get built it was off screen and the villains motivations make no sense. But overall I give the movie a solid 6/10 great movie then ok now Expand

Downey and Favreau makes sure that these comic books does echo in the library with sharp illuminating sound.

Iron Man

Favreau tames an introductory animal with a smart cookie. When it comes to introduce a safe act on the play, he is the man for the job. Even take The Jungle Book, for instance, he may not have anything new to offer on the table, yet his authenticity comes with a certified and acclaimed label. The director Jon Favreau started this MCU franchise with not a bang but a promising milieu that thrives upon the character no matter how shady and dodgy the storytelling grows. Robert Downey Jr. conjuring this already-loved-by-fans comic character which drives the entire MCU for the most part of it, has an accurately bulletproof arc. Every step of his character spirals out these trains of unheard and thrilling adventures.

And with baby steps in this chapter, Downey is practically always in the lead when it comes to perform on screen, not only due to the substance offered to him to factor in, but his nature of being the attention seeker in the room makes him one of the finest actor; a quality that most probably every actor should have, at least it would make more sense. Jeff Bridges filling in, the stereotypical role of a sinister millionaire casts fear on us through his poised and reserved performance, a fine example of it is when Downey and him shares a press conference and meddles into an argument with a nuanced body language.

Gwyneth Paltrow gets very little to invest on along with Terrence Howard. To be fair, Favreau takes plenty of cheap shots, glorifying revelations with old school background score or even an almost weepy reunion between two friends, but there is a panache in his finesse on editing it to a pragmatic dusty ground. Besides, how often do you see, a so called hero sweat while working hard from the most privileged position, so if he goes rogue and wishes to claim his title, let's just go along with it and call him the Iron Man.

Iron Man, at the time of its release, was nothing revolutionary, however little did the world know that the strong foundation built by this film would directly lead to the expansive MCU franchise that is very prevalent in popular cultureIron Man, at the time of its release, was nothing revolutionary, however little did the world know that the strong foundation built by this film would directly lead to the expansive MCU franchise that is very prevalent in popular culture today. Iron Man finds itself as a fantastic example of the action/comedy blend. Tony Stark is a likable character full of personality, emotion, and quips. This film knows when it is okay to pop a joke and when it instead needs to be serious. It is through this blend that the movie becomes a re-watchable overall joyful film that still can be taken seriously. The characters are fantastic in this film and RDJ, Gweneyth Paltrow, and Jeff Bridges' performances both sell help sell the film and its "formula" as something that continues to work for Marvel (although the villain's motivations could have been elaborated on a bit more at the end).

The pacing of the movie is also fantastic. The action set pieces (although now appearing a bit dated) are still enjoyable and they are spaced out throughout the film such that they allow for the characters and their personalities to really shine. As mentioned above, the characters and their flaws are what really sell this movie and that is in part due to the effective pacing by Jon Favreau and his team.

Overall, while Iron Man by itself is nothing terribly revolutionary, its impact would be, all while the film still holds up to this day as an enjoyable standalone superhero film.
