The cast is strong and Jeff Bridges is stron in the role of Iron Monger. Overall this is a good superhero movie and a steady start for the MCU.

It feels like a comic book movie, but in a good way. It handles everything very well and introduces us to a great cast. Robert Downey Jr's performance was great and has become iconic. Tony Stark is rightfully clever, self absorbed yet caring, and has great personal stakes. Clark Gregg unfortunately doesn't get much screen time but he has a nice presence that makes SHEILD a but omnipresent. The worst part by far are a few weird translations, but they don't bog down the film much. Overall, still worth revisiting! Expand

The characterization of Tony Stark as Iron Man is wonderfully done and his growth and development as a character was really well done. Robert Downy Jr. was amazing along with the rest of the cast. The honest characters moments and brief exchanges make the movie feel real and the characters are written so honestly. The romance is well done, the humor, however the motivations of the villain get muddled later in the film. The action scenes are rare which makes the pacing way better and leaves more room for the story and characters but also makes the action scenes super rewarding. They are very entertaining and fun to watch. Its a superb film and it was nearly perfect and will be remembered as a classic. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This comic book adaptation really offers a lot of Entertainment! Robert Downey, Jr. is very well chosen to play the self-cherished Tony Stark. Jeff Bridges plays well, but his role should have been expanded. Paltrow is completely under. The film is cynical and ironic and built with a pinch of humor. Good action and with a wink explains that you should not take it too seriously. Well done! Expand

This is a very well done origin story that is also incredibly entertaining. Tony Stark's journey to Iron Man is nicely paced to where it doesn't drag like some origin stories, and we get plenty of "Iron Man is a badass" moments throughout the film. There are some very unrealistic moments like when Tony is thrown into a wall while testing the suit and magically sustains no injuries, but those are small nitpicks. Iron Man remains one of the best MCU movies to date. Expand

Superhero films were becoming more and more popular thanks to the Spider-Man trilogy, and Iron Man built a new franchise of superhero films that fans still love 10 years later. 'Iron Man' is about a billionaire named Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) who runs Stark Industries, a weapons manufacturing company, and finds himself kidnapped in a cave by terrorists while giving a weapons demonstration in Afghanistan. With the help of new friend/mentor Yinsen (Shaun Toub), Tony builds a flying weaponized suit to escape the cave and become the superhero known as Iron Man. Tony's goal is to rid his company of weapons after seeing how the terrorists used them.

Robert Downey Jr. does an outstanding job as the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist and his alter ego. This is one of the perfect Hollywood/superhero film castings of all time. Robert Downey Jr. was born to play Iron Man. Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) is a great side character/love interest to Tony Stark, and it's great to see a superhero film build up to romance instead of forcing it. There are very few examples of this, and it helps the pacing of the film(s). Terrence Howard is fine as Rhodey, but it's clear why he was recasted. Shaun Toub is great as Yinsen, and I really hope that there is some callback to his character in 'Avengers: Infinity War' this year or 'Avengers 4' next year. Jeff Bridges is phenomenal as the villain Obadiah Stane, a.k.a., Iron Monger. He was easily the best villain in the Iron Man franchise and was very memorable. Obadiah's evil plan is simple. He doesn't like the fact that Tony Stark has taken his job and tries to rid him from the company by any means necessary. It's not very cliche, and it's adapted well in the film. Being someone who isn't familiar with the comics, Iron Man was a great origin story film for those who didn't know it previously.

The script is very well written. Tony Stark's dialogue is hilarious yet serious. There are specific scenes where the dialogue stands out, but I won't mention them to avoid spoilers. (But who hasn't seen this by now?)

The action and visual effects are great in this film, and it's great seeing Iron Man suit up and fly. It's fun to watch. It's very believable, too. You actually think you're watching Iron Man fly.

As for the score, it's a great start to the MCU, and it's badass, but I don't think it defines Iron Man like the Iron Man 3 score does. This score is moderate and more intense while Iron Man 3's score is fast-paced, emotional, and intense.

The costume design in this film is amazing. Iron Man's suits look way better in film than in comics or cartoons. The Mark I suit was a great callback to Iron Man's first appearance in the comics while the other suit designs were great, too. Mark III was a great choice for Iron Man's main suit in the film and arguably most memorable.

While I think the pacing in this film was good, I felt the cave scenes were just a little too long. I know they were trying to establish that he was in there for a while, but it seemed like it took a while before Tony even learned Yinsen's name. It's established that he was in there for 3 months, which I guess is believable, but you don't see Tony dealing with the aftermath. Iron Man 3 dealt with this better with the PTSD storyline. Tony seems to be just fine after spending 3 months in a cave. Other than that, this movie is amazing.

Iron Man is the 1st MCU movie and one of Marvel's best.

It's actually the most grounded MCU movie, and this helps Robert Downey Jr. impress with his performance of Tony Stark's character, the tech wizard and playboy who goes from amoral weapon producer to humanity's benefactor as Iron Man.

This origin story is actually great compared to other MCU movies, and the invention of the Iron Man suit is depicted very well.

The only bad thing is the name "Ten Rings" given to a gang in the desert, a name which teased Iron Man's arch nemesis Mandarin, but he never appeared.

It also gave birth to the Marvel Cinematic Universe which would transform the standard trilogy film dinamic into an ongoing soap opera of never-ending stories (for better or worse). Never before had the mainstream world seen Iron Man, after this he became one of the world's most recognizable super heroes.
The film was fresh, innovative, and relevant. Downey and Paltrow both deliver memorable performances. The Tony Stark role alone, provides a wide-range of commentaries about our world that viewers of all backgrounds will find compelling, entertaining, and not the least bit preachy.

Iron Man is an above average comic book movie. I don't know if that's saying much. I enjoy it for what it is. It’s a fun movie if you have a home theater system and sludge if you don't.

The plot is full of holes, and the action bits are bland compared to what has been seen of the character in past comics and cartoons. It’s hard to cheer much for Iron Man when everything comes so easy for him, he's just not a very likable or believable character. And that might be what's most wrong with Iron Man.

In looking back at this film one can't help but not the sequels that came after and all the casting drama that followed. This film feels childish, like it came out in the 90's. We have a setup of the origin of Iron Man, but what really needed was a setup story of Tony Stark first. We jump right in and he has no troubles really in the world. He has no real conflict or struggles. Even later his brilliant engineering skills just seem to come out of now where. It does not make him feel human.

The characters in this movie are very bland. Who do you connect with? The only ones that have a shred of connection are the terrorists and Shaun Toub as Yinsen. I think kids like Iron Man because of the tech he has. Or the attraction of dancing strippers of his own plane. But it’s so shallow, we don't care collectively about Tony Stark at all.
Then when you throw on the super suit, he's lost even more.

Like I said earlier it’s a fun, turn your brain off for 2 hours kind of movie. The main villain is so predictable and out of place. What a waste of Jeff Freakin Bridges! So much more could come out of it and the sequels improve on this but this first flight of Iron Man is just that a comic book movie for all the pains and praise that might bring. Crank up that sound system baby!

Best Actor : Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts

The obvious choice would be to pick Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. But really he's just playing himself. Or his onscreen persona much like Matthew Mcconaughey does in Mcconaughey things. Like bad car commercials.

Gwyneth Paltrow has some character to her, we learn things about her. She changes in the way she things about Tony Stark, well at least a little. The other characters in the movie don't change at all, they just do different things, that's not character development.

Paltrow has an innocent quality and seems to glow on the screen. She's fun to watch. I wish she had more to do in the film. It’s a shame she pretty much got axed out of the series.

Worst Actor: Terrence Howard as James "Rhodey" Rhodes

It’s no wonder why he was re-cast in the second film. Spewing out bad military one-liners and flag waving propaganda is really not that hard. Anybody on Fox News does it every day. So why is watching him in this film so ear bleeding bad? We care nothing about him at all to boot.

Best Scene: Big Robot Battle

The lead up is the big battle at the end. And while it’s fun, it’s not really epic and kind of predictable. The fact that Obadiah could build a more improved suit and bigger than Iron Man in a short amount of time.
What seemed like mere hours in movie time is ridiculous. While we get the idea that Stark's company is huge, like Wal-Mart in scale. He builds the robot at the main plant right? How could Tony not know about it or how could they figure out how to do that. Lame.

The most interesting character scenes are when Obadiah comes in and paralyses Tony with some weird Men in Black device. I think he steals something from him. I forgot. It’s not important. Well Obadiah clearly wanted Tony dead and just like 5 minutes later tries to kill him in the suit, so why not just kill him right there on the couch. Ugh. Worse plot hole than a James Bond Villain.

Again Potts sneaks into Stark to steal plans or research and confronts Obadiah. This is a fun scene, you don't know what's going to happen. But he lets her go. Again, idiot. No wonder you are second in command. Bridges' character really needed a makeover and bigger motivation than greed.

Worst Scene : Desert Base Building

The idea that Stark could build an iron man suit in a cave in the middle of the desert under the cameras and watch of terrorists is absolutely crazy. At least take your audience out of the movie at the one hour mark not 10 minutes in.

Even then we are not seeing Stark struggle with how to do this or planning it out. We are following the events through the terrorist eyes, not Stark. Well, the terrorist’s names are not on the movie title. Just dumb slog.

Hits
• Cool action bits
• Jeff Freakin Bridges!
• Iron Man on screen for the first time.

Misses
• Obligatory Iron Man Black Sabbath Song at the end.
• More plot holes than there are stars in our galaxy.
• Flat one sided characters we care nothing about.

Robert DowneyIron Man is a groundbreaking film for comic fans, being one of the best ever made. However, what also leads to the large succession in this film is the great appeal it not only has to comic book fans, but general movie watchers. Robert Downey JR immediately becomes one with the character, giving you the feeling no one could ever replace the character to match the constant enthusiasm and wit the character personally brings to the table. I literally think this is one of the main reasons this film was so critically acclaimed when released, the film is revolving all around this entertaining character, meaning a scene is never boring; it just goes to show how an extremely good performance along with a stellar script can evolve into something awesome. This film sets its tone in the first sequence, and maintains it throughout, keeping that level of humorous consistency, and not being drawn back by the fact these type of origin stories have to introduce their characters and show them in all their glory in their costume as the film ends.. That’s the general structure these origin stories go along, but this film took a leap and made it to the other end, because this film displays the character at the beginning as arrogant, not the hero type – but as the film progresses he begins to really morph into his Iron Man persona, and that gradual character development leads to a satisfying result. Overall, this film is amazing and completely knows what it wants to be, and the effect it wants on the people that watch it over the world – being not just comic fans, but general moviegoers and lovers of films. This film gets from me a 9/10 92% Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Iron Man was a bold risk to start off he Marvel Cinematic universe. those who are are well knowledge of he Marvel Universe know his importance but the average film goer wouldn't have heard of him if it wasn't for this movie. Thankfully the risk paid off not just for this movie but for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Robert Downey Jr. plays the charismatic Tony Stark as he starts off being an arms dealer but later learns the errors of his ways. He relies heavily on his metal chest piece to stay alive which makes this hero unique since his greatest strength is also his greatest weakness. The technology gives him alot of power but it also his life support. Stark is a likable hero due to the fact that his vulnerability is a state that the average person can face. The biggest strength of the film let alone the whole Iron Man film franchise are the interactions between him and the rest of the cast. He has great chemistry with Gwenoth Paltrow which gives rise to wonderful romance. Jeff Bridges is actually a great villain as the fearsome Iron Monger when he creates his own suit of armor based on the Iron Man prototype. The fight with him is an an intense climax and it is a nice visual representation of him fighting against what he used to be. The biggest shocker of the film though was when Stark reveals his secret identity to the world. This allows unique possibilities for him to explore his relation with the rest of the world. This film is a great foundation for the Marvel Cinematic universe. Expand

I find thatFrom the opening credits of comic book pages flying past, you know that this will be a good movie. Whether you're a superhero fan or not, you can't help but think the guy coming out to legendary music, is someone worth watching. I find that the most exciting scenes are when Tony invents new ways for him to get the suit on. Something that we always get to look forward too in movies after. This will be so fun to see in "Captain America: Civil War.

In this movie, you won't be able to predict what is to come, and it ends up surprising you. This movie will give you hope for future Marvel movies to come. This was the start of great things coming out of the Marvel comic era. Marvel Cinematic Universe took the right step in starting with Iron Man due to him being an all around big hit that has the right attitude and confidence to pave the way for the movies that came after. Iron Man was the ultimate fantasy fulfilled as we are taken inside his suit while watching him in action. If we take a look at the beginning when he was taken by his captors in Afghanistan is when we truly began to see Tony change. We are able to see this change by how he is willing to help the man who saved him, rather than fending for himself. He was given a second chance at life to be someone other than who he was becoming. He was having fun doing whatever he wanted with the unlimited amount of money to get what he wanted. He decided to become a hero, a change that mankind needed.

Downey's casting as Iron Man, made audiences skeptical: he wasn't in the best place of his career, and people didn't know what they were to expect; but that's also one reason you will enjoy this movie: no one expected such a great performance from Downey due to his questionable past. Downey puts on a stellar performance that causes you to want to see the second and third installments, along with all of the other crossover films in the Marvel franchises. Downey blew audiences away with his character, making them want a fourth film; one that has not yet been confirmed. There is no way that they could ever cast someone else as Iron Man, as they are one in the same. This film set the stage for all Marvel films that came after that were just as successful.

That's an awful lot of exposition for any one film to handle. Jon Favreau's Iron Man wrestles with those responsibilities as well as a relatively unique conundrum: How do you make audiences care about a character whose face is hidden under a metallic scowl? The Iron Man filmmakers' answer is to cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role and keep him out of the Iron Man suit for as long as possible.

Downey stars as dashing billionaire playboy Tony Stark—part Howard Hughes, part Errol Flynn—who leads a life unencumbered by reflection until he's captured and held hostage in Afghanistan by terrorists using his company's weapons. Downey escapes by building a crude version of his Iron Man suit. Upon returning home, Downey perfects the robotic flying suit, but when he announces that his company is getting out of the weapons business he makes himself an inviting target to rivals, including enigmatic father figure Jeff Bridges, who looks disconcertingly like Winter Kills co-star Sterling Hayden with his shaved head and mad-prophet beard.

Iron Man takes its sweet time getting Downey into the Iron Man suit, and it doles out big action setpieces sparingly once man has fused triumphantly with machine. Downey is so much fun as a breezy cad that it's a shame he spends so much time brooding and luxuriating in obsession. Like Ang Lee's Hulk, Iron Man is a comic-book blockbuster characterized as much by heavyweight acting and sober intellectual concerns about the use and misuse of power and technology as the usual comic-book foolishness. But Iron Man finds a much more palatable, audience-friendly balance between delirious spectacle and tortured introspection thanks largely to Downey, a great actor who's also a great entertainer. His relationship with a fire-extinguishing robot is funnier and more poignant than the central relationship between humans in most movies, and there's nothing arbitrary about love interest/long-suffering assistant Gwyneth Paltrow. Having gotten all that exposition out of the way in a brisk and entertaining fashion, Favreau paves the way for more pure fun and excitement in future entries. Iron Man is the rare comic-book movie that makes the prospect of a sequel seem like a promise instead of a threat.

Before there was 'Captain America: The First Avenger' (2011), before there was even 'The Avengers' (2012), there was 'Iron Man'.

Robert Downey Jr. makes a comeback for his career as Tony Stark, an eccentric businessman who gets kidnapped and builds a robotic, weapon suit and manages to escape. Gwyneth Paltrow is Pepper Potts, Tony's assistant throughout the entire film.

Jon Favreau, best known as Pete Becker from 'Friends' (Monica's rich boyfriend), and directing 'Elf' (2003) directs this movie with confidence and sure-handedness. 'Transformers' (2007) was released the year before, and I complained that the action scenes, while dazzling, were a bit of a technological mess. Here, you know it's strange when a comedy actor/director can craft a better action movie than Michael Bay, a filmmaker from day one and has directed many action films in his career, but hasn't won the respect of any film critic or audience member.

Jeff Bridges plays Obidiah Stane, the main villain of the film who wants Stark's technology and will do anything to get it.

'Iron Man' is a dazzling summer action blockbuster, full of the comedy charm we expect from Robert Downey Jr. and the action scenes are cleaner and less confusing than the ones in 'Transformers' (2007).

This movie, along with 'The Dark Knight' (2008) are two of the best comic book movies of 2008, and they have raised the bar for the genre. This is fun, and edgy. No other Marvel movie could be a better start to a fantastic universe.

I'm not used to the form and structure of superhero movies, so it took me a while to clue in that because it's an origin story, Iron Man wouldn't reach his full form until late in the film. I was also super surprised to see that Iron Man is fighting terrorists--I was not expecting that, although after I thought about it for a while I realized that it's a natural way to update superhero plots to reflect modern American concerns.

In any case, the movie had a lively and engaging plot, and of course, Robert Downey Jr. was amazing. His smarmy one-liners and his impatience for everyone and everything are hilarious, and he somehow manages to remain charming despite being a huge jerk to everyone. His odd relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts is a good humanizing factor in the movie, as it's clear from their first interactions that he values her more than he's willing to let on. It was neat to see the seeds being planted for the sequels, and of course the film's surprising end-note was as fun as it was frustrating.

Like The Dark Knight, Iron Man doesn't fell like the normal superhero film it has more depth and feeling to it and it works really well!

I just like some of super-heroes movies because of this. This is to boring to be a super-hero. I don't even watch the 2nd and 3rd movie, and I don't wanna. Just for the visual effects I give it a 6

Iron Man is a well-balanced, action-packed adventure that will entertain all audiences. It possesses wise humor, ground-breaking CGI, a wonderful cast, and a well-grounded setting. This is a good standard for superhero films.

I remember going to the cinema with my dad to see this movie, I was so excited and ready hoped they would make another. Didn't know it would rnd up where it is now, but am really proud.

Anyway, after seeing this movie I basically couldn't find a movie any better, I bought the movie on iTunes and contie to watch it whenever I have spare time. In my opinion it is the best movie ever made.

It has excellent character development, the bad guy was originally one of the main characters closets friends, which made for an entertaining story, and there are some of the best special effects I have ever seen in a movie (Even today).

Too bad John couldn't direct the third movie.

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Analysis: Iron Man (2008)

Marvel Cinematic Universe is probably one of the most ambitious film franchises put together by a studio, and most likely, the best. Kevin Feige was the first person to come up with this idea. An idea of creating a shared media universe, grouping famous super-heroes into the big screen. I personally love this idea. Imagining Iron Man teaming up with notable Marvel characters such as: Hulk, Captain America and Thor as well other characters like Black Window and Hawkeye is just extraordinary. Of course I want Spider-Man and Wolverine to join The Avengers, but the movie rights of these characters belong to Sony and Fox, respectively. To do that, those studios need to sell their rights to Marvel but since that’s not gonna happen, they will stick with their own universe. Unfortunately. However, that doesn’t stop Marvel Studios from offering gritty, smarts movies to cinema and also developing stories that lead to bigger and better things. And that’s where “Iron Man” comes in. This movie starts the Phase 1 of this large universe and it’s not only gripping and entertaining, but it’s also amusing and clever, and seems to comprehend the essence of super-heroes. It’s a rousing ride from the beginning to the end, a heartwarming summer blockbuster that takes its incredibleness to higher levels.

Robert Downey Jr. brings a sunny personality into his character, providing fresh and energetic dialogue while also improvising his own lines. He’s the perfect choice for Iron Man. Thank you Marvel Studios for hiring such incredibly talented actor to portray this marvelous character. Thank you. Downey’s character is funny, clever, quick and most important, strong. I swear to God if I could choose anyone to be my partner or best friend, I would choose Robert. About Gwyneth Paltrow, I don’t know why she’s so bashed by everyone. She did very well in this film, to be honest. Maybe I should watch more of her movies (Oh well). Another actor I would like to point out is ah… Jeff Bridges. Jeff’s thick voice makes the villain sound menacing and dangerous, and his performance in this blockbuster is outstanding. I’m not gonna lie, I laughed my ass off when his character started yelling at the poor doctor: “TONY STARK WAS ABLE TO BUILT THIS IN A CAVE!!!! WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!!!” XD. One minor flaw I would like to point out is that when Obadiah fights with Tony at the nearly end, he knows perfectly how to use the suit. How? He didn’t test it before, like Stark did. Maybe I’m nitpicking a little bit, but when you have these flaws in the narrative, it prevents you from giving a better score to these movies (*cough* The Dark Knight Rises *cough*). However, the actor fits the role of Iron Monger, a flying robotic weapon that fires air-to-surface missiles. He’s really good in combat, which takes us to the next point.

The fight sequences. The fight scenes, although few, are very well done. No shaky cams, no quick zooms or even disturbing amount of explosions (eww Transformers). I’m not gonna say it’s better than those action sequences in “Captain America: The Winter of Soldier”, but it’s definitely pure exciting and visually stunning. Iron Man flying around is fun to watch and the last fight sequence remains spectacular and believable. If there’s something that it’s difficult to capture in super-heroes movies is belief. Movies that successfully did that are Nolan’s Batman trilogy and the first Amazing Spider-Man, and even those have their “suspension of disbelief” moments.

But the highlight of the film is gotta be the storytelling. The way that the film’s narrative flows throughout the movie is fantastic. The story kept my attention, and that’s very hard to do when you’re writing a script and developing characters. It doesn’t throw every information into one film. You know… like “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” did. It doesn’t spend its time trying to set-up future Marvel movies and TV series. The story focus ONLY on the main character and his motivations, personality and past, while occasionally introducing characters that are going to play a major role in the Marvel franchise. That’s how you set-up sequels and crossovers! Even when the movie is not focusing on Tony Stark, the story also manages to entertain the filmgoers with spectacle thrills and proper character development, even if sometimes falls into typical clichés of modern blockbusters. But just few of them. It’s also fun to see the pacing of this flick, which I think it’s beautiful. Another great thing I would like to point out is the directing. Joss Whedon is the director of this movie, and also the character known as Happy Hogan who does a tremendous job in this super-hero movie. He didn’t do a very good job with “Cowboys and Aliens” but with this film, he outstands himself.

Final Score to Iron Man: 9/10. At the end of the day, “Iron Man” is gritty, entertaining and funny (occasionally, thanks to Robert’s charm) .
