It looks like Paramount just threw a bunch of things into a stock pot and assumed because it revolved around the Marvel franchise, that we would automatically accept it. This is greed and laziness on the studios part, even Avengers was way better, IM2 has a momentum and dynamic, it's weak in parts but aside from Rouke's character being campy, is still watchable. The true test of time is when these films materialize on FX cable years later, I can never get tired of watching IM1, but this last installment was blah, overdone, and hokey, Kingsley role as the villain was left to being a laughable Buffon of a joke. When will Hollywood treat the legacy of these series with more respect, sure IM3 is going to make a ton of money, it's was budgeted in at about 200 mil, but who really cares, when they slapped together, a half baked, shoddy finale to a very interesting super hero..... This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very disappointed, the actors do well with the story they are given, sadly that story is just terrible. My kids fell asleep and they are absolutely hooked on the Avengers characters and all things Marvel related.
I heard they wanted to give the characters more screen time but you have to make an action movie about action.
The showdown at the end was about all the action Iron Man fans could take away from this slow and painful butchery of the Mandarin, Iron Man and War Machine characters.
No one wants to see glimpses of the empty suit wandering around the mansion or the Mandarin turned into a flame throwing yuppy with a grossly overblown grudge.
Shane Black is clearly the most destructive villain in this movie, Iron Man 3 is Tony Stark destroying his previously well defined role as a super hero. I expected the final scene to be Stark paying restitution and making public apologies after destroying all the suits and quiting so he could have more quality time with Pepper.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mannnn, this movie stunk! Is Stan Lee going senile or something? How much money did Hollywood pay him (or drug him) to allow them to wreck the Mandarin villain like that? The plot drug on too much in the beginning, the PTSD thing Tony Starks suffers from blows, and the villain twist was just lame. This comic-book hero movie has for the first time made me hope this trendy movie fad dies a quick death now. Downey looks old and tired and I liked him as an actor in the first Ironman and others, but they need to weld the iron door shut on this series for good my goodness. Anyone saying this movie is good must be easily entertained. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Once again, the superhero genre has released yet another faulty movie. The brilliant original Iron Man is nowhere to be found. Instead, we get a lot of what we saw in Iron Man 2 which was also pretty bad. The things I will most remember from this movie:

1. Iron Man armor can fit anyone, no matter their height or weight
2. Apparently all the villains in the Iron Man world rival his strength
3. Anyone can be a superhero and save the day
4. Tony Starks character arc is a one trick pony
5. The (seemingly indestructible in previous films) Iron Man suits double as fireworks
6. Tony Stark didn't need to discover a new element or keep the electro-magnet in his chest at all, he only needed to have surgery and he could have been free of his "struggle"

I'm always baffled at how movies can start out so awesome in the first iteration only to end up worse as they go on. Time to retire this character until Marvel can write a compelling story.

Iron Man 3 is definitely better than Iron Man 2, and more thrilling then the second one. The plot to this movie wasn't very convincing, but that doesn't Robert Downey Jr and the rest of the supporting cast to make Iron Man 3 fun to watch.

It has a lot of ludicrous, over the top moments, however I can forgive that since it is based on a comic book. For me, it was so over the top that it had more of a comic book feel than some of the other Marvel films I have seen. The movie would fall flat without Robert Downey's deadpan delivery, and there was nothing new in the plot that you haven't seen before other than the pieces of armor that automatically attach themselves to Iron Man. The 3-D and special effects were excellent and it was never boring. It was much better than the last installment. Expand

Lots of great comedy as well, which is fitting with director Shane Blacks previous movies like Lethal Weapon. BTW the scene after the credits is not worth waiting for which sums up my slight disappointment. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So much of this film competes with itself and feels rushed. None of the elements are fully fleshed out. Just when they start to go somewhere, they sidetrack to a different plot element. This should have been a 3 hour movie. I get the feeling much was cut from the film and it shows. This movie has 4 true scenes and they all do not mesh very well: Tony Stark's relationship problems, the small town with the gumshoe element, the president and Mandarin, and the final fight. This movie definitely cheats you when it comes to Mandarin, and I wish they had left it out...completely. The trailer sets the movie up, as does the movie, and this sidetracks the true plot completely. They didn't give any hint that this was a red herring. Hollywood got you here. Liars.

The ending made this seem less like a superhero movie and more like the ending to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Hey, same director, same droll monologue by Robert Downey Jr. The anxiety attacks were the worst thing about the movie. Completely unbelievable and he gets over them WAY too fast. I wanted this to come into play more.

The comedy was intact and is the movie's only redeeming quality, but even it felt force. It was less natural and more forced. I did enjoy the finale, but it was over without a very good resolution. Some much of the film was cameo and CG to fill the roll of bad acting. They did this with New York in Avenger's and it worked, but this wasn't a Joss Whedon film, so it lacked that seemless transition. It was staged and right out of the trailer.

Could have been much better. The first Iron Man and the Avengers were way more fleshed out and complete.

Trouble is, for starters its running time is a flabby 2hrs 15 mins, easily 30 mins too long, the villains are largely uninteresting, and for an Iron Man movie, he's hardly suited up for the first hour of the movie! Thankfully Downey Jnr and Paltrow still have a great chemistry, effects and action sequences, when thy finally turn up, are excellent, but compared to last years "Marvels The Avengers" this is still a good, but on the whole, pretty average comic book action movie. Some might argue that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) is more himself in this film than in any of his others. I unfortunately am not one of them and while Iron Man 3 is a solid film, it doesn't really fell like Iron Man was even in it. The plotSome might argue that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) is more himself in this film than in any of his others. I unfortunately am not one of them and while Iron Man 3 is a solid film, it doesn't really fell like Iron Man was even in it. The plot revolves around what happens when a close friend of Tony's is caught up in a terror attack orchestrated by a villain called The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). Tony heads on a journey of vengeance and re discovery as those he left behind are targeted in his stead. Like the Avengers did, Iron Man 3 takes a large portion of its opening to re-introduce the characters in Tony's world from Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts to Don Cheadle's James 'Rhodie' Rhodes, but unlike The Avengers it drags. The labored opening gives way to a 2nd act so fantastically funny it doesn't seem to belong to the same film. Shane Black brings his signature black comedy to the Iron Man universe and while making this world a lot more interesting than Iron Man 2 it does remove that familiar Stark feel. In fact it feels more like Harry Lockhart (also played by Downey in Shane Blacks's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) has replaced the troubled hero with his own overly narcissistic, sarcastic and all around vulgar self. The only character who seems to maintain their identity in this film is Rhodie who is just as fun loving as he was in Iron Man 2. In fact the replacement of Terrence Howard for Don Cheadle has proven pretty successful as he is much more accessible a character now. The main detractor from Iron Man 3 is that it doesn't really feel like the Iron Man from The Avengers or Iron Man, he seems to be just as likable but this film doesn't really live up to the character that has been built over the span of 4 films. Another problem is that the film relies heavily on the relationship between Stark and Potts and Gwyneth Paltrow just seems bored this time around. Her scenes drag, her delivery is flat and she doesn't put any effort in. The middle section which coincidentally is almost Paltrow free allows Downey to shine with the whip smart dialog and the introduction of a small boy named Harley (Ty Simpkins) is ingenious because he is almost a mini Stark but with a little more compassion. They interact in an almost brotherly way and you really understand why these two interact so well, they are both really well fleshed out and both deliver some killer lines (Simpkins has one line that is so completely unexpected and hilarious it almost makes up for the slow open). Iron Man 3 while chock full of action is ultimately a comedy film with a very lighthearted tone. The film flounders when the jokes aren't flying so even the action, which looks fantastic, is lacking something. The finale shows that Black can direct a big budget actioner but it just seems like a little too much for a film that feels like a stand alone but is trying to be a conclusion of a trilogy. Finally despite the great Downey performance the best comes from Kingsley who is not only the perfect villain but has a chameleon quality that allows him to be anyone, if anything you should go to see it for him and him alone. Downey was on top of his game once again as Stark. Saw this in IMAX 3D and should say that should be the only way that this movie is viewed. An epic movie experience for an epic movie. I would really like to say that Guy Pierce's character was very convincing. Sir Ben Kingsley's Mandarin was a little over the top and he sounded like if Walter Chronkite and Brian Wiliams from NBC. That would be the only reason why I gave the movie an 8. Other then that, I would definitely see this movie again. It was bigger then life and the action scenes really had my on the edge of my seat for the most part.
Also I have to give Don Cheadle props, just for the fact that it was really his first "action-y" movie and I think he really nailed it.
If you havent seen this movie, then go. If you have seen if and liked it, see it one more time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about Iron Man 3 so I was a little concerned going into the theater. However, in my opinion the movie was outstanding. The cast and characters were fantastic just like the first two and the plot developed well and, unlike the first two, didn't have so many plot holes. The villain was thankfully not a robot and had some depth as well, which was one of the biggest things Iron Man 2 lacked. There was also plenty of humor, actually, there was more humor than the first two combined and almost all of it felt well timed and fit into the flow of the film. There were a few jokes or quips that felt forced but for the most part there were a lot of laughs to go around. The only real area of weakness for the movie were the overpowered villains. *SPOILER* The villains were so OP it made watching certain battle sequences a little ridiculous. It shouldn't take several Mark suits to take out one of the villains henchmen. And like in the second film, their powers have a limited range (whip in part 2, the need to touch you in this one) so them being capable of going toe-to-toe, let alone overtake a Mark suit was kind of a joke. Nonetheless, the movie was fantastic and these weaker elements, while they sound like a big deal here, are really easy to look past. Expand

There's no doubt that Marvel films have gone from simple stories about superheroes to epic adventures with the best writers and actors in Hollywood, but the fact is Iron Man 2 was your typical disappointing sequel. In the third installment of the Iron Man adventure though, the franchise bounces back in a huge way, as we get a story that not only rivals the original, but in my opinion knocks it on it's ass! Iron Man 3 finally answers the question does the suit make the man or does the man make the suit, as Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) faces his toughest enemy yet, the one with the greatest reach, that no one sees coming. With his team and gear in ruins, Stark is left to lamb it in the middle of nowhere, and in a sense start over and find himself all over again. After playing Tony Stark for so long and appearing in just about every film Marvel has made in the last decade, Robert Downey Jr. knows everything there is to know about the character, and it has never been more apparently than it is here. Writers utilize cannon from various comics, graphic novels, previous movies, and really delve deeply into the character like never before. I also like the fact that it wasn't just another film with Stark in his lab full of toys. This time he's stranded in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by new people, having to start from scratch, it gave the whole thing a much more realistic feel to it, and finally there's the villain. While I loved every second of the Avengers, the truth is that the bad guys are aliens and aren't all that realistic. The Mandarin is a really bad guy and he's as real as the rest of us, needless to say I loved it. If you're not the huge fan I am and you only decide to see one of the Iron Man films, I'd choose this one. Rarely do I ever suggest seeing anything but the original, where it all started, but in this case, the effects are better, Downey's knowledge of the character is better, the writing is much better, and it's not the same old tagline you tend to get with introductory films. My original thoughts on (Iron Man 3) were negative, it was to earlier to release another Iron Man movie particularly only a year after The Avengers. I’m thinking “wow, Marvel is really going to beat down the superhero movies to the ground”. However, after seeing the trailer, all of those negative thoughts flew out of my mind, and I was again excited to see an Iron Man movie again.

The story behind this third installment of the awesome Iron Man franchise is a terrorist called The Mandarin, who is the mastermind behind these terrorist attacks. His goal is to kill the president of the United States. Of course, it’s not going to be so easy to fulfill his goal when you have Tony Stark lurking around. Tony Stark is there to stop the Mandarin from his evil plans, but along the way has his own problems. Stark has a relationship issue with his girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow, and he losses his house where all of his technology lye’s. Nevertheless, there is more to this Mandarin character then we really know and think. Can Tony Stark stop The Mandarin or will he have is day?

I liked this movie, I thought it was good, not great nor as good as the first two Iron Man movies, but I still enjoyed it a lot. The strongest aspect to the movie was its amazing lead in Robert Downy Jr. as Tony Stark. There’s no other better actor to play Mr. Stark, he’s charismatic, he carriers this movie a lot and he’s extremely funny, if it wasn’t for the comic relief mainly from RDJ I would not have liked this movie as much as I did-slow at times- Ben Kingsley was also great as the Mandarin, and I enjoyed his performance a lot. Last, I will mention Guy Pearce who I absolutely love as an actor. I thought he played the smooth talking billionaire very well. The one problem I had with Guy Pearce was his character which I thought wasn’t fully developed as much as it should have, but nevertheless still a good performance. The action sequences were very good, especially the one where iron man saves the falling passengers out of the sky, the scene had great intensity and left me on the edge of my seat. The visual effects were superb as usual, at times I really couldn’t tell what was real and what was fake.

The movie is defiantly flawed, and there are many flaws to this movie that really hits hard with me, the biggest was the completely anticlimactic action scene at the end of the movie. The final battle scene started off great, with lots of iron man suits arriving to help out Tony and Rhodes. Even when Tony confronted The Mandarin and they started having their duel, it was still impressive to look at, suitably towards the way that Tony was jumping from suit to suit, which I found very creative and nice to watch. However, when Pepper Potts joined the fun, the whole third act really dropped off a lot for me. Something happens-which I don’t want to spoil it- with her that’s so not necessary and completely predictable that when it happened, I was immediately turned off. Then, Shane Black had the nerve to bring her back to the fight sequence and finish the Mandarin off all by herself, which I did not believe, or bye into for a second. The ending was a huge let down to a movie that I was very much enjoying. Even though I really enjoyed the action scene at the end, that whole sequence with Pepper Potts really disgusted me. Other flaws to the movie were the villain (The Mandarin) who was underdeveloped and had a piss poor death. I just wish he could have had a better death, he was a very cool villain, that had so much potential.

Overall, I did enjoy (Iron Man 3) a lot, and even though it isn’t the best iron man movie in the franchise it’s still a good action summer popcorn movie, and a movie to start off the summer season.

My Grade: MATINEE

p.s. the big twist in the movie is a huge success that I completely bought into and very much enjoyed. If you dare and say “I saw that coming” then you’re obviously a lair and shall be zapped and killed by Tony Stark himself!

Damn you, if you didn't like it! There were some implausible things, sure. But that is expected of comic book movies. They're not all going to be perfect. And excellent execution on the Pepper Potts death. Just when you think Stark is going to save the day again, he loses Pepper and acting and expressions really made you forget that she was going to be okay due to her new condition. Excellent. Iron Man 3 was the finale. People will always complain about the ending of stuff and how "its the most flawed movie of the franchise" etc, etc. This was the greatest movie Marvel has EVER produced, In my opinion (minus Spider-Man in 2002). Tony Stark was Tony Stark, billionaire, playboy, philantrophist. More flamboyant and witty than Batman. Excellent ending to the franchise, I hope they don't reboot it, or continue it without Robert Downey Jr. while he can't don the suit forever, if they're going to make a new one, Downey Jr. or nothing. Packing all the quick wit and explosive action that's become trademark of this series, this third and highly-anticipated outing sees Tony Stark at his most vulnerable as he fights stoically and sometimes desperately against the will of a mysterious terrorist known as the Mandarin after his home is destroyed. Featuring some great new side characters and welcome old ones, this film definitely ups the scope of Iron Man while retaining the same charm of the others, and is a great piece of entertainment. The only big flaw it has is in its mid-movie twist, which reveals the Mandarin as nothing more than an actor and facade for the true villain, who is both much less intimidating and far more standardized (especially when being played by Guy Pearce). This move might not be quite so deflating if it weren't also for the fact that this character quickly becomes not only a shattered echo of the awesome Mandarin we've been expecting to see, but simply a drugged-up comic relief. It didn't completely ruin the movie for me, but I would have much rather seen a showdown between Stark and Mandarin than Stark and Guy Pearce, particularly since you fully believe beforehand that it was this Mandarin who blew up his house and almost killed Pepper Potts. But despite this, it's definitely worth seeing and definitely worth the title of "Iron Man". Another solid entry from Marvel. Expand

Just like any other Iron Man the visual effects are unbelievable. To top that off, Iron Man 3 is explosive and extremely thrilling, making the last three Marvel superhero films look like amateurs.

Iron Man 3 like much of the glorified suit of armour in the movie is a clanking hollow shell lacking any real body or substance. It sorely suffers from the titanic box office juggernaut Marvel’s The Avengers proved to be and evoked overwhelming feelings of underwhelming disappointment and disenchantment upon its culmination. Damaged by a nonsensical antagonist swerve and a superhero over-utilizing his new remote play feature amidst inexcusable plot holes, aimless disjointed sub-plots, farfetched role reversals and a sense of going through the motions, this Iron Man installment is nothing short of filler, used as a catalyst to fuel the next phase in the ongoing Avengers (revenue) machine.

Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as the brash billionaire playboy industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man is at his sardonic best, however, much of the dialogue Downey Jr. professes throughout the film seems on the verge of stand-up comedy rather than the empowering words of a man-made superhero. Also reprising her role as Pepper Potts is Gwyneth Paltrow, her performance though solid is plagued with an implausible narrative for her character, and the camaraderie between her and Downey Jr. seems forced at times. Ben Kingsley’s portrayal of credulous Tony Slattery otherwise known as the Mandarin is good for what it is, and Don Cheadle as the Iron Patriot formerly the War Machine got lost in the narrative somewhat but nevertheless provided a satisfactory performance for the parts and dialogue he was given. On a more positive note, Guy Pearce provided a stellar performance as the unstable scientist Aldrich Killian, a rivaling industrialist to Tony Stark with an underlying resentment for his fledging genius counterpart. Nonetheless, despite a couple of passable performances, notably those of Downey Jr. and Pearce, Iron Man 3 was sorely lacking character portrayals worthy of the audience’s time investment.

Shane Black takes over the helm of the Iron Man film series from Jon Favreau after his lackluster Iron Man 2 and teams up with Robert Downey Jr. who he last worked with on Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. In hindsight perhaps Iron Man 3 could have been renamed to suit its premise more; Remote Control Iron Man, maybe Pepper Man, possibly even Avengers Hangover, these would all suffice, but How a Rich Man Copes with Seeing Aliens seems to fit best. Too much of Tony Stark’s vulnerability was exposed in this movie which diminished the character we have all warmed to, the exuberant larger-than-life billionaire playboy/superhero. By divulging Stark’s susceptibility to the strains of life to the extent it has in Iron Man 3 it makes it a lot easier to understand if he were to finally hang up his proverbial boots for good; not a good thing for a superhero film series with unfinished business. In addition to this, there is an underlying disconnect from the outset much like Stark with his beloved iron suit(s) in a significant proportion of this movie, by opting for the sympathy vote it is apparent Black has alienated viewers such as myself who want to see a superhero at the height of their powers overcome evil. By the end the very thing that ties Tony Stark to Iron Man is away with the wind, which is ironically where big-budget filmmaking intelligence went when this movie was produced. Here’s hoping the remaining parts of the Avengers machine have not depreciated like its iron core has evidently done.

Even the post-credits sequence connected to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe seemed needless and afforded nothing to entice in terms of reasons to be eager to want to watch the forthcoming Avengers movie or the next entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise. However, ironically the ending cameo encapsulated the essence of the entire Iron Man 3 movie, a psychiatric evaluation of a perturbed superhero.

On the contrary, Iron Man 3 is not a categorical disaster; it packed in enough explosive action and vivacious backdrops into a lengthy 2 hour 15 minute running time to at least be aesthetically pleasing to the viewer. Although when you look behind the niceties there is not much to write home about.

Nevertheless, Iron Man 3 is a frantic overblown popcorn flick that lacks any real conviction and can be only described as a damp squib. Like all superhero movies, the superhero is only as good as it’s adversary, and in this case the adversary was not worthy. As a stand-alone franchise it’s clearly demonstrable that it is suffering, as part of an even bigger picture, Iron Man’s appeal is draining with only 5% power and the odds of it reaching maximum altitude again are slim to none.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This Movie was not what many people expected it to be, a standard comic book movie hero vs villain, when it tried to take a more serious route ,which is fine, and tries to build up back story for iron man for the avengers 2. Most of the movie is spent with back story for iron man and figuring out what the main villain is doing. I loved the main villain he was very clever and you never knew what the was going to do next, if only iron man could fight him back or at least try seriously it's a little pathetic when your girlfriend defeats the main villain for you. During the whole course of the movie Iron man kills maybe 1 of the actual bad guys, just because your trying to make the story more serious doesn't mean you have to make him a freaking pansy. You had all this build up leading to the end and then he doesn't even kill the main villain. The movie is also filled with lots of humor which is appreciated these movies need more humor but I wish the movie was more focused on the villain than back story and humor because that's what made these movies in the first place! Those who go in wanting the IronMan and Avengers IronMan will be disappointed because that is not what this film is. IronMan 3 is a much more mature film for the most part, with a story that feels relevant and a focus on Tony Stark rather than IronMan. I particularly liked the fact that Tony was suffering PTSD after the events of the Avengers. In the end this pays off somewhat leading to a great story for Tony and pretty much no one else. The special and practical effects in this film were awesome particularly the getting in and out of the suits and the plane sequence stunt is great to watch. This film sends a message to future super hero films you can have a decent plot as well as decent action and character growth.

So after seeing the trailer, I went into Iron Man 3 with high expectations. I came out feeling pretty alright.

Iron Man 3 is more than just an explosive action movie, or even the barely above average com-dram that’s hidden beneath, I think it could be argued that it’s a character study of Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. It easily gets over looked amidst the flashy tech-porn and the quiver-inducing special effects (which are both pretty spectacular I’ll admit)....

With less focus put on the "Iron Man" himself and more emphasis put on the Tony Stark character it is easy to see why people may not like this film in comparison to the heavy action-fighting of the previous two stories. I personally likeWith less focus put on the "Iron Man" himself and more emphasis put on the Tony Stark character it is easy to see why people may not like this film in comparison to the heavy action-fighting of the previous two stories. I personally like that they took the time to develop a story that does not focus solely on the suit, but delves to reveal the inner character of the man beneath it. We see in this movie that Iron Man is a facade, a persona put on by a man to hide his inner demons and fears. The tie in with the Avengers movie helped the story quite a bit and it was easy to empathize with a clearly vulnerable character who seemed so invulnerable in previous iterations.
There is substantial story here which is why I think a lot of fanbois have rated this movie so poorly. They clearly wanted to see Iron Man launching missiles and blowing stuff up rather than dealing with his anxiety and frustrations. Personally this type of movie is far truer to the comics than any other and gives it a much more real feel. Iron Man is a man first and foremost, without the suit he isn't capable of laying waste to his foes and even when in the suit the weight of his humanity can still bear down on him and leave him vulnerable. This is the Iron Man I want to see more of, though it seems unlikely there will be much more of it.
With that said I have to say that it's main weakness is that it delves a bit too deeply into the life of Tony Stark, to the point where it seems the action of the movie plods a little. There were a few scenes that could have been cut to streamline the movie and keep the focus on the action a bit more. I praise it for it's focus on character development, but there is such a thing as too much "whining".
All in all this is a solid film, the people giving this 1 or 0 as a rating are obviously just angry that it is not a shot for shot remake of Iron Man 2 with robots annihilating each other. If that is what you want then wait for the god awful looking "Pacific Rim" to come out and enjoy your robots, but if what you want is a true sense of who Iron Man is and what the comic has always tried to reveal to its readers, then Iron Man 3 is the best of the series to date.

Personally, this was my favorite installment of the Iron Man franchise. Does it feel like an Iron Man movie? Not really. Is it darker than the first two? Yes.

Iron Man 3 is definitely "A Shane Black Movie" rather than "A Marvel Movie" as his trademarks are "All over* this, but I enjoyed it a lot. I've seen other reviews that disliked the fact that it was so heavy and serious, but I have to disagree with that crowd, even though I can understand where they're coming from. The words "Dark and serious" mixed with "Superhero" don't exactly make sense. These types of movies are supposed to be relatively light and filled with nifty action sequences.

But if there's one character in the Marvel Universe that deserves to have the darker side of his story told; it's Tony Stark. They attempted to do so in Iron Man 2 with the hints of alcoholism and impending death, but failed---miserably in my opinion. With Iron Man 3, we get more into the modern day comics (Namely Matt Fraction's first few volumes of The Invincible Iron Man and Warren Ellis' beautifully written Extremis arc).

Again, I've seen reviews that didn't like the tone of the film, but I loved it! I liked the fact that we get to see Tony broken and vulnerable. It proves that, even though he's a superhero with awesome tech, he still still struggles with anxiety, guilt and other things like a "normal" person does. It humanizes him and given what he went through in "The Avengers", I found it to be a welcome change. I'm really happy that they chose to deal with his issues directly rather than sweeping them under the rug and forgetting about them altogether. We see Tony dealing with these issues and feelings all the time in the comics, so why not try it out on the screen?

As for it not following the comics: This is one *Major* gripe I've seen people have with the movie. I'll admit, I thought the plot would focus more heavily on the Extremis virus and how Tony integrates it into himself than it did, but it didn't really bother me too much. The thing I think people are most disappointed in (But nobody is brave enough to say) is both "The Twist" with the Mandarin (which has plenty of critics, but I think the real reason for the disappointment is with Extremis) and the fact that when the word "Extremis" was uttered, everyone thought they'd be getting something closer to Warren Ellis' storyline and they didn't.

About the only thing that bothered me was the use of flashbacks because it messed with the whole cinematic timeline of Iron Man as we know him, so there are a number of plotholes and inconsistencies throughout and if you're a die hard Iron Man comic person, that'll drive you crazy.

However, I still found it to be really enjoyable, plotholes and all. It's a fun and entertaining movie and in my view a great way to get the summer started! So if you can live with the fact there are plotholes and just have fun with it, it's a great movie. I recommend it!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is an interesting movie in that I didn't hate it. But while watching and well somewhat enjoying the movie, I had this irking feeling from the middle to the end of the movie. From the beginning it was good in the sense of setting up a movie. Setting the tone and even introducing new characters, building them and old to the point of keeping my interest. I was soaked into the movie until the twist. And yes it is the Mandarin twist. Now I've never read the comics but I have heard from many that this villain is that of magic base and is the arch nemesis to Tony Stark. I though wow that would make a very interesting plot point, Science versus Magic and judging from the beginning it seemed that this villain would have been an excellent counterpart to Tony Stark, But no, sadly it was treated as a joke and for that it hurts me for when it disrespects the source material. And I'm sure many would argue that this movie was meant for people who don't follow the comics and that this was supposed to be a realistic approach in Iron Man. For that I argue if this was the reason, than why do that to a certain iconic character that has been well established in the franchise. Why not use a different villain or make up a new villain? Why hype up and advertise years before and publicly showcasing The Mandarin? Now enough with the Mandarin let's talk about other points of the movie. It was ok. But that's it. I didn't like how a lot of things were treated as a joke. Such as when Tony Stark was having panic attacks and well although it is suppose to be a serious matter, these attacks were shown in comic reliefs. These attacks could have made some interesting dilemmas during action scenes but it was cured and shrugged off before the climax. Not only that but the cure to it was lame in that it was something he was already doing in the first place. I didn't like the newest armor in that it was also treated as a joke. Yes, the armor was treated as a joke. It kept falling apart every time is hit something. Now for the overall plot. The plot was fine but very flimsy. It revolved around this virus? (not really a virus) called Estremis, which basically fixes and enhances everything in the body. So if you're missing a leg, you'll grow it back but also you have like super-human strength and stuff. Now I actually like this new thing, it was cool and interesting, and really the movie alone could have worked off this without having anything to do with the Mandarin. Woops sorry went back to The Mandarin. Other-wise I like the action, its still a good action flick, there are many other gripes about this movie but none that are as big as these points, and really it did not live up to the hype. The hype being a lie that is since the plot had nothing to do with what was advertise. Not the best Iron Man, better than 2, but the first is still better. I was really hoping this movie could have surpassed the first but it was an utter disappointment. Still though it's action right....... Expand

His struggle throughout adds so much more development to the character and truly makes him feel more human than the vain main-man we are used to seeing.
The villain aspect, albeit untrue to an extent, is still refreshing for someone who knows about the comic equivalent but isn't a complete fanboy that will pick holes. Everyone to their own, but I would much rather see a film that surprises me than one where I'm given the outcomes I expect.
Generally, cinematography, sound and every other technical aspect are what you would expect from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or any other high budget movie for that matter; from loud, intense action sequences to the slower moments filled with emotion.

THE BAD: I can't completely justify their treatment of the villain being a comic book fan, although refreshing and unexpected what infuriates me the most is the plot holes/unjustified use of references to 'The Ten Rings' in previous movies.
Although Tony Stark was, for the first time since the opening sequence of the first movie, emotionally human again, they jam packed this film full of Robert Downey Jr's humour even in moments where it wasn't necessary. I know he has a charm that suits Tony Stark perfectly and don't need to be reminded of it every second of every movie, even in potentially life threatening situations. I understand heroes are bad***, but they are meant to be relate-able too.

OVERALL: This movie is definitely worth a go, even for the sceptical comic book fans as this isn't an adaptation of a single comic storyline, but more of a different interpretation of the character and the foes he faces.
With the premise of rotating characters to and from the shadows, let's not forget that Iron Man 3 is living in the shadows of 2012's comic book movie explosion, I think expectations may have been set a little high but Iron Man 3 tries it's best and delivers as much as possible.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was some what of a mixed bag, the misuse of Sir Ben Kingsley, though his performance was very very memorable in an unpredictable way, was a main area of disappointment for Iron Man 3. In my opinion Shane Black and co should have stuck closer to the source material of the comic books and had The Mandarin played out in a truer to the origin form. My reason for this is Ben Kingsley's performance in the transmission interruptions were frighteningly impressive and an actor of that stature should not have been so sorely misused. On the contrary, Stark's interactions with Harley were a high point of the film as were the special effects, and the post-credit scene with Dr. Banner was a nice touch. All in all, the movie was an interesting spectacle but I am left with the question of what could have been? Expand

This movie was one of the most anticipated film for me this and and it somewhat disappoints. After 3 movies, I think this one by far is the worst simply because of that confusing twist with the mandarin! And that whole part with the little kid I forgot his name was just irrelevant, No it was STUPID, only to attract the much younger audience. The Mandarin was also a joke before the movie i was hoping for an epic fight scene with tony and the mandarin. However I get extremist agents the main baddies hacking and slashing away with all these suits. Additionally whats up with the way they made the Iron man suits so FREAKIN' weak in this movie, I remember Thor hitting the iron man suit with his hammer and only to sustain a couple of dents on the suit. but in IM3 most of his suits is torn in half with a single hit?? And with that the only pro with this one is the couple of funny banter with Tony and the inclusion with the extra suits
I have to say if you don't wan't to ruin the smart-ass, Tony Stark in your mind i suggest you dont watch this movie's ending
Also, I'd like to rant on the lack of the AC/DC ;D

For me it just got a “good” rating and nothing more.

The reason I cannot give it more is because of the following....

The Mandarin is an Ancient Mystic being from the Orient who has been able to harness special ancient mystic powers into forged rings that were made from swords, shields and even crowns of many historical warriors and kings.

In the 1960's, 70's and early 80's The Mandarin was to Iron Man what the Joker is to Batman.

He has the demeanor of Darth Vader.....The guy in the movie had the demeanor of Cheech from Cheech and Chong. As My Wife would say....."Really ?"

Tony knows Technology and Science but not the Mystic Arts and Magic which makes the Mandarin a worthy opponent.

The movie started as though The Mandarin was going the main villain and Aldridge (AIM) was the secondary villain (or lack thereof).
It was the complete opposite. In fact, The Mandarin was some kind of hoax and comedy relief. Let alone they made him kind of like a Saudi that was in hiding that Tony found like when the US troops found Osama Bin Laden.

The action was good and worth seeing for the CGI effects but nothing else !
Seems as though the primary focus during production was the technology and CGI effects.
The story was secondary which made a lack of a major plot and thus suffered.

Maybe since I am a die-hard comic fan I am over analyzing this…maybe not.

Oh well, At least we have Superman next month, Wolverine in July and Thor in November.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Originally I really wanted to see this movie, but as it came closer to release date I started losing interest. I ended up seeing it during memorial day weekend, and it was a full house. I just finished it and I have a bit to say. First of all, horrible way of hiding the villain, the minute you see him you can tell he's the villain, they did the same thing in Batman forever. The bad guys Tony has to fight are unclear, in how to kill. They get shot in the head and even get caught in explosions, but they still don't die. Only when they get hit through the chest do they finally die, also the effect they use for them doesn't look that great. The fact that nobody could figure out how the Manderin Attacks occur; even though we see how in the first 15-20 minutes, until a little too late in the film is a bit infuriating. The fact that Tony can now remotely control the suits almost makes him unimportant because now he doesn't have to put himself in danger anymore. Finally the most biggest complaint I have is the fact that Robert Downey Jr doesn't do his normal likeable performances, but feels more like he's on auto-pilot. This is pretty important to like the main character, especially when it's talking about his life story. I guess I should say some positive things about this flick. I like some of the effects like always, but doesn't have that same charm that the first one does. Some of the action scenes are pretty good, the airplane scene in particular is well done. The ending fight with the suits vs the Extremis soldiers is okay, but is bit messy to. At last I think Ben Kingsly performance as an actor is funny; him being a terrorist not so much, I'm glad that they didn't try too make him so serious and decided not make anything possibly offensive. In the end this film is really different from what I expected, what I got wasn't all too bad, but I wanted something else. Expand

Robert Downey Jr. is in his typical smart-alec humorist, narcissistic, bad ass mantra, while this time developing more of a heart as his relationship with people and Pepper blossom. The action in this film is extremely intense and blood pumping, while not over powering the plot. The plot is equally enthralling, leaving you on the edge of your seat, but giving you enough dramatic irony to make you empathize with the characters. Tony Starks interplay with the boy in Tennessee is charming, and enough to make the most judgmental appreciate Tony Stark. Ben Kingsley's cameo is brilliant and hysterical. Sadly I'm left wondering how Iron Man really gets the bad guys, it just kind of... happens. Overall, good movie. amongst the best superhero movies being made currently. As a fan of the comics and the first and parts of the second film, i feel this movie feels apart from the others and it is clear that another director has taken the helm. It is a shame that Shane Black was given the role as i felt he ignored the rich history and some what bastardised the series.

A solid action movie with great visuals and fun humour. While Robert Downey Jr. plays his role excellently, the supporting cast fails to inspire. Furthermore, the villain and prime predicament are generally uninteresting.

The main components that will keep you involved in this movie is its great action, stunning visuals (recommended: watch in 3D!), clever humour, and overall blockbuster feel to it.
Don't expect a hugely innovative movie here (as Iron Man 1 was); this movie is highly enjoyable to watch with friends. It's a good movie for a weekend outing, but rather forgettable.

I feel that anybody giving this movie a poor score does not understand the point of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is it's own universe, and doesn't completely follow the comics. Get over it. Yes, the comics are fantastic, but expecting these movies to have those exact same characters, story lines, and style is simply setting yourself up for disappointment. I will admit that the movie's biggest plot twist was a momentary let down for me. But then I began thinking, and realized how clever, risky, and bold it was of Marvel to do what they did. It froze the plot for a scene or two, but the rest of the movie easily regained that momentum. These movies are meant to be witty, action-packed entertainment. They've always been among the best as far as action movies go, and I for one was not disappointed by this movie. It was sweet to see Tony Stark in action outside of his suit, Guy Pierce and Ben Kingsley were great (while not spectacular) villains, and the plot twist may have been strange, but it certainly is not the movie breaking tragedy that fans are making it out to be. This movie has layers of greatness to it, and it's a shame to see people walk away disappointed from this film because they forget that it was exactly that; a film, and not an adapted motion comic. The Mandarin from the comics would not have fit to the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this point in its cycle, and the way they handled him was shocking and daring, but never felt disappointing. Accept this movie as its own creation, and if you've enjoyed the rest of these films, you will undoubtedly love it. Expand

It was like one of many movies which try to build up to a climax of senseless fighting. As to filling in the gaps in the remaining time, I guess the director Shane Black had a tough time deciding what to insert. I wasn't just a little disappointment by how boring the movie was as a whole. I practically slept through the first quarter of the movie, and even after trying to concentrate on the movie, all interest faded out quickly.

There was barely any character development, and even for the supposedly exciting parts of the movie, I wasn't very impressed by the senseless fighting either. The whole plot just didn't seem to make any sense. Tony Stark dared the villain to come look for him, and even revealed his address on television. Yet, when the villain came, he wasn't even prepared for it in the least. How much sense does that make? Not a lot.

Well, fine. I shall give a little credit to the sub-standard climax since it actually got some adrenaline coursing through my blood for the first time. But the movie, which seemed to be trying to attract crowds with its violence and special effects, left my blood running cold. A fresh batch of troops arrived, boasting several other iron robots in its arsenal. This defeated the whole idea of a special "Iron Man", didn't it? After that, it was a chaotic flurry of blasts everywhere, and the movie ended at last with the robots exploding in mid-air. While watching it, my mind instantly reeled back to the point where the first suit exploded. That time, it was a big one. So, I was surprised when Tony and Pepper escaped unscathed from all the suits exploding around them. But fine, I can see that the director wanted to create more dazzling displays of special effects, and I applaud him for his effort.

To sum it all up, it is an 'ok' movie at best, and I don't see it surviving the cut-throat competition in the movie industry. Give it a few more years and who knows? Iron Man might turn from iron to rust.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The iron man 3 movie is both good and disappointing. The enemy is mostly a human who have many weakness like maybe with no arm and with the power that the main villain gives, it will make them superhuman. That's it. The new enemy is also disappointing. All the main villain and the villain could do is mostly generate heat which will burn almost anything. There isn't really much variety. Also there isn't much back story of the main villain other than he want to meet Tony Stark in the roof in the new year.

From what I see, the humor is one of the good thing in the movie. There is some really funny humor to just normal one.

The Mandarin enemy is not really intimidating for me. Basically, he only leads a false army of Arabians which the twist is that the real Mandarin use heat to make explosion. Not really that amazing and intimidating for me. And the super human villain ability is the same as the main villain. I expect them to have lower ability but it seem that they have both equal power which is kinda weird for me.

The plot to kill the president is also disappointing for me. They should really use a different plot because in movies, mostly they use that plot.

Now for the machines. There is really many suit at the final fight. I expect them to tell a bit small story about how they were created but all they do is like: Here is the machines now go kill those enemies.

I expect the movie to be better than Iron Man 2 but it seems I am wrong. Iron man 2 villain seems to be more powerful for me. They have a whole army of robot plus a human who use a battle suit like Tony Stark but with a different power. I would only recommend watching this movie for the Humor. Other than that, the movie is highly disappointing 5/10 for the movie from me.

Iron Man 3

I guess now that I am reviewing this I am going to have to review the entire trilogy so be ready for Those Posts. So to me this movie is a sequel of two movies, Iron Man, and the Avengers. Why, because the Director, Shane Black is smart and he understands that that bore fest Iron Man 2 Never existed. So let us get on with the review of the movie that launched our SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER SEASON!!!

Cast and Crew

Iron Man 3 stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyeth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Peirce, and Ben Kingsley. The movie is Directed by Shane Black, the mind behind Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Lethal Weapon 2, and The Screenplay writer of "Last Action Hero" ....

Well he wrote the Screenplay, he didn't direct the Last Action Hero. Shane Black is more known for his quick and smart dialogue. This is a style that you would understand if you watch "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (I recommend it). So how did Shane Black handle the summer Epic? Pretty well. The Directer worked with Downy Jr. Before and knows how to utilize the guy. The Cast is Phenomenal with Don Cheadle doing a much better job as the Iron Patriot. As a fan service, he still sees himself as a war machine....ooooh speaking of fan service. I'll save that part for later :D

The Story
Iron Man 3 is the story of Tony Stark post Avengers incident. Tony is left legitimately frightened after the incident in New York city that changes his life. Tony is left to his thoughts when a terrorist who calls himself the Manderine starts attacking LA. Now Tony has to face the Maderine while trying to battle with his own demons.
That is the story and the story is great but there is an issue within the story that will inevitably divide the fans of this movie. Many who watched the movie know exactly what I am talking about but since the problem didn't piss me off to the core I will not spoil it. Of course I will have to create a retrospective post where I will get spoilerific about this movie. The story is good. It is exiting, Iron man is faced with a real threat and while you aren't left thinking "how the hell is Tony going to win?" you do still feel that he is facing a real and dangerous threat.

Presentation
The Special effects and acting in this film is great. This is mostly due to the fact that Shane Black Utilizes a lot of Tony Stark in this film. This movie really brings the audience closer to the type of individual Tony is and I really liked that about this film. The Direction pulled out all the stops to show that these movies are not all about a CGI tin man that can fly, it is about Tony Stark. The performances are great and the movie makes good with showing you this. My only problem with the presentation was the inability to demonstrate certain things in a light that won't piss off the fans. I have a feeling I know where the story because of my knowledge of the franchise and its film adaptation. However, liberties were taken that make me fully understand that fans will be pissed and that all falls in the hands of the presentation.

The Rating
After going to the theater to see this I am totally pumped for the summer season. Iron Man 3 has its problems has its problems but totally outshines part 2, and in some instances the first instalment as well. I still don't agree with some of the choices and chances the movie takes but those choices actually benefited the film. Angry Fans, all can say is remember Iron Man because the first instalment took liberties and facilitated in cheap propaganda. The ending was even a bit anti-climactic as well. this movie was well structured well played, and well presented and it was a totally fun watch. I am a stickler for source material so that will definitely knock this movie down a peg from being delicious. Iron Man 3 was certainly a tasty treat and

Great Tasting

I had thought that it was going to be the best Marvel movie yet. However, when I had finished watching it I was very disappointed. Once again with another movie that came out this year, I feel angry because the trailer makes the movie seem so much better than it actually is. I'm not that bothered by the fact that the Mandarin wasn't "real but even with all of Tony's suits, I still feel as if there wasn't enough Iron Man action. The jokes and comedy were OK. For me this is a sad and frustrating over-rated film. I also thought the ending was stupid. Seriously, Pepper (looking weird in only a bra and yoga pants, and glowing red) defeats the Killian?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Never before have I felt so cheated by a movie like Iron Man 3. The film is a colossal failure in my books and could arguably be my worst superhero movie of all time; that doesn't mean to say it isn't good in some parts.

SPOILERS

The first act itself is a great piece of cinema and gave what the trailer promised; easily the best part of the movie. It showed a much more stellar and well paced point in the movie that I myself actually applauded at, especially the scene where the helicopters blow up the house; but even the first act had flaws. For example, WHY DID HE GIVE THE MANDARIN HIS HOME ADDRESS??!! or how about WHY DOESN'T HE ACTIVATE THE 40 OTHER IRON MAN SUITS THAT ARE IN HIS BASEMENT WHEN THE HOUSE IS BEING ATTACKED??!! GOD!!!! But I digress, the first act was fantastic and really stood out to me promising more as the film went on.

And then it started to deteriorate with the second act, and who do I blame for this? That god damn kid! He had no other involvement in the second act other than to anger me to my boiling point! I know that Shane Black probably wanted a more child atmosphere to it but you didn't have to make him that annoying. All he does is piss Tony off, causes him an anxiety attack and then gets captured....WHAT?! This kid was one of the major hiccups in the film.

However, the biggest hiccup was the Mandarin himself; yeah you all knew I'd mention this. The Mandarin was the biggest and best feature about the trailers that were shown, he looked menacing, he looked frightening! This to me screamed: MOVIE OF THE YEAR! Sure his alien rings were gone but he still became a threat in the story and you could sense his presence. And then you get to his mansion and you meet him and......who the f*ck is this? The Mandarin was a phony! He was an actor! BEN KINGSLEY WAS PLAYING HIMSELF IN THIS MOVIE!!!!! WHAT THE HELL, SHANE BLACK???!!! This made me infuriated that if my girlfriend wasn't with me at the time, I WOULD HAVE LEFT THE THEATER!!! What was he thinking, did he just wake up one day and say: "I don't care about The Mandarin now, let's make him into A GOD DAMN JOKE!!" For me this is what ruined the movie for me, it was just so ridiculous and so insulting to any comic book fan who had detailed knowledge of the character.

And speaking of insults, the ending is just ridiculous. To sum it up in short words: Killian is the "Mandarin", Pepper kills Killian, Tony explodes all the Iron Man suits and gets the shrapnel out of his heart claiming he is a "changed man". That is the worst ending ever....THIS MOVIE SUCKS!!!

To sum it up in one word I would say "MESS", it is downright insulting to the comics, it's characters are bland at most points, it's development is pathetic and I hate it. The only good points that deserve the 2 points go to 2 separate things.
1. The acting is spot on and Robert Downey Jr nails it as Stark much like he has done in the past films. There is not one actor who is off in this film and that is fantastic to see.
And 2. The first act is mind blowing, it's what the trailers showed and that's what made me gravitate towards the film at first, even if it has flaws now and again. Truly great cinematography.

But is this film worth watching? I'd say yes, it's still an Iron Man movie and every movie with Iron Man in is usually a blast to sit through. It doesn't save it from my experience but maybe you'll find something better in that steaming pile of dog sh*t.

Pros:
+Acting is great
+Downey Jr nails it
+First act of movie is amazing!

Cons:
-THE MANDARIN TWIST
-Act 2 and 3
-Insulting and badly paced as the movie went on

VERDICT
2/10

Just overly not what I'm looking for out of a Marvel movie and I was really let down with the plot of this one. It felt extremely rushed and that no focus was put on this movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. HAHAHAHAHAAHAAH . . . no. No, Shane Black and Robert Downey, I didn't find this 130-minute over budget inside joke between you two hilarious. No, I did not find Downey's excessive jazz hands in order to summon his armor hilarious. Were those really necessary or some signal towards the so-called illuminati? Either way, you looked like you were speaking in sign language to your boyfriend Shane. No, I did not appreciate Downey attempting to turn this film into Iron Man: Tropic Thunder. The only good thing about this film was the "House Party" protocol. Otherwise, shane and robert went full retard on this one. Expand

'Iron Man' (2008) has been absolutely amazing, a great addition to the Marvel canon and a great way to establish the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Then came 'Iron Man 2' (2010) which was a different story, while not overly terrible...it was simply a mediocre sequel that had a forgettable villain, and was just filler until 'The Avengers' (2012) was released.

'Iron Man 3' is a film that started off with promise...but after the first hour and maybe a few minutes, it went from a strong 9 to a 6 out of 10.

Robert Downey Jr. does not disappoint as Tony Stark aka "Iron Man", he is building more suits, but for some reason, he's lost his spark. His suits are not the kind of strong, powerful suits that he made in previous films.

Guy Pearce plays a man named Aldrich Killian, a once eager businessman who met Stark back in New Year's Eve 1999, but was turned down and now he plans revenge on him.

Gwyneth Paltrow returns as Pepper Potts, she is concerned for Stark since the events in 'The Avengers' (2012) and he is suffering from constant panic attacks and anxiety issues.

Ben Kingsley tackles the role of the Mandarin, one of Iron Man's biggest enemies, anyone who has read the comic books will know.

My issue with this movie is the villain, without spoiling too much, Ben Kingsley is criminally underused as the Mandarin. Plus, that unsuspected twist was absolutely unnecessary.

It feels like Marvel knew that everybody was going to see this movie after how big 'The Avengers' (2012) was. It seems like they only care for box-office openings, so they can do whatever they want to the story and not care because this movie will do well in the box-office.

I felt like an idiot for seeing this movie, but the only good things in it was the action, they're still as dazzling as ever and Downey Jr. never fails to please the fans.

Overall, I've seen this movie a couple of times, it's not the worst movie I've ever seen, but it's not one I'll be watching more times in the future.

Awful. Tedious. Believe it or not, boring. So glad I didn't pay for this garbage. Watched it free on a flight and couldn't even finish it. My peanuts were more interesting. Boooooo.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A bit confusing but an interesting movie overall. I hadn't seen the other MCU movies at the time I saw this so I didn't understand all the references but I still liked it. Trust me, ieven if you don't like superhero movies, it's all worth it for the scene where The Mandrin- a terrorist who seems to be the movie's terrifying main villain- is revealed to be a drunken British actor who's a pawn in the real villain's scheme. I laughed my butt off at that scene. And even beside that, it's enjoyable for superhero fans. I liked it. Expand

The inevitable franchise fatigue ― plus a markedly unmemorable villain ― may account for the feeling that “Iron Man 3” is more perfunctory and workmanlike than its two predecessors, but this solid production still delivers more than enough of what fans expect to earn its weight in box office metal.

Part of the rich appeal of the first “Iron Man” (2008) came from the inspired casting of Robert Downey Jr., who brought loads of impish charisma and insouciance to the part of defense contractor turned iron-plated superhero Tony Stark. It was particularly fun to watch Downey becoming Iron Man, bobbing and weaving about in his space-age rocket suit like a novice surfer trying to stand up on a wave. You can only do an origin story once, alas, and some of the magic was already gone from 2010’s “Iron Man 2,” which pitted our hero against a stock Russian heavy (Mickey Rourke) in a standard-issue revenge narrative, but still found ample time for Stark and romantic foil Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) to do their very passable Tracy-Hepburn routine. There was also a sly running commentary on the celebrification of American culture ― and, in Stark’s effort to rid himself of the shrapnel slowly poisoning his body, a deft analog for Downey’s own widely publicized battle with various forms of addiction.

Most of that is absent at the start of “Iron Man 3,” which finds Stark in fine physical shape ― if a bit mentally unhinged from the events of “The Avengers” ― and living in relative domestic bliss with the comely Ms. Potts. All of which leaves little for Black (and co-screenwriter Drew Pearce) to do other than summon up the latest villain from the Marvel dugout: A bearded, bin Laden-esque baddie who calls himself the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) and who claims credit for a series of terror bombings, one of which, a frightening attack in front of Hollywood’s historic Chinese Theatre, has landed Stark security honcho Happy (Favreau) in a coma. (Although clearly unintentional, the movie’s recurring images of severed limbs and burning bodies can’t help but strike a queasy note in light of the recent events in Boston.) Spewing his boilerplate anti-American rhetoric in a series of crudely made videos that mysteriously jam the television airwaves, the Mandarin promises that “the big one is coming,” just in time for Christmas no less.

Among the core fanbase, it was primarily because of a turn of events that they felt had betrayed what certain characters stood for. Personally, I think this is a great movie. Shane Black writes and directs here, and it certainly feels more like one of his films than a "Marvel movie." In that regard, it is a bit of an outlier in the MCU, but it also adds something fresh to the franchise, which Iron Man 2 failed to do.

What I find so fascinating about the film, is not only how well the twist works in my eyes, but how it feeds into Tony Stark's character and the themes that surround him. The movie is about wearing masks. It's about taking on a persona bigger than how you perceive yourself to make up for your shortcomings. It's about deciding if you really need those masks to live up to your full potential.

Because of this, I love Iron Man 3. It's clever, stylish, exciting, and a whole lot smarter than most people give it credit for. I can understand where some elements might not work for fans, but now that a few years have gone by, I recommend giving it another chance. I think you might find some things to appreciate that you hadn't noticed before.

Let me begin by saying that this film is a massive improvement over Iron Man 2. This doesn't spend it's entire runtime setting up future films but instead has a great story by itself. The characters are great and Robert Downey Jr. is still perfect as Iron Man. The story is also really great as well as the action. The villain, however, is just really bland and some parts of the film didn't seem fully thought out. In the end, this is a solid entry in both, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Iron Man trilogy. I'm going to give this film an 8.4/10 Expand

Iron Man 3 is the end of the Iron Man trilogy and it was quite good but lacks in some areas. The villain was different this time around, I liked it but they kind off messed up with The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). Also the changes in mood when Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) sort off dies was a bit interruptive: Pepper sort off dies and not a minute after that there is a joke was implemented in the scene. But it does deal very well with the effects of PTSD that Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) has after the battle of New York. Overall it's a pretty ok movie and a good entry in the MCU.
