Summary:
After being transferred from juvenile to adult prison, Mel Blight (Vincent Miller) is taken under the wing of Mark Shepard (Cosmo Jarvis), a despised criminal, and Warren (Guy Pearce), a near-parole inmate. Inside is a small and constrained prison drama, even by the inflexible standards of its genre, and yet Williams’ debut is so replete with such moments of raw compassion that it almost invisibly accumulates a deep well of emotion — one that allows the film to feel much bigger than it looks by the time it arrives at its absolute knockout of a final scene.

Inside has a suspense hook to drive it forward and a climactic violent set piece, if not quite the one we were expecting. But the question of who’s going to kill or get killed ultimately proves less important than how their pasts have shaped these men — or rather trapped them, like quicksand.
