Formidable movie, which truly still feels like a work of art and is very well made, even though a rather unhistorical interpretation of WWII. Some of the performances are remarkable, especially Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa.

Der Anfang, angelehnt an klassische Western was Kameraführung, Kulisse und Inszenierung betrifft ist meisterhaft. Oberst Landa gespielt von Christoph Waltz bis da noch ein relativ unbekannter Schauspieler, liefert eine unglaubliche Performance ab. Man könnte einen Drei Stunden Vortrag über diese Figur des Oberst Landa halten obwohl er nur eine Screen Time von vielleicht 30 Minuten hat. Christoph Waltz frisst mit seinem Schauspiel die Szenen auf und spielt seine Schauspielkollegen in den Schatten. Die Handlung simpel, eine Rachestory mit einem Hauch von Spionagefilm. So interessant erzählt das man durchweg am Ball bleibt und ein Tarantino Finale was wieder völlig ausufert, im positiven Sinn.

Ich hätte nicht gedacht das man eine Szene wo zwei Leute Apfelstrudel essen, spannend gestalten könnte. Dieser Film hat mir das Gegenteil bewiesen. Eine der besten Szenen der Filmgeschichte, meiner Meinung nach.

Ich mache hier jetzt mal Schluss. Schaut diesen Film!!!!!… Expand

It was an obvious choice for me, as I like the theme of war and Nazism in movies, so I really enjoyed it. Although I liked it a lot, I think it's probably not for everyone. Although I liked it a lot, I think it's probably not for everyone. The ending was really cool, but by the time we get to it, we have long hours of talking that, while I wasn't bored, probably won't be to everyone's taste. However, the film appealed to me, so I was entertained the whole time, and I'm not some Tarantino fan. I like his films, but I don't buy them as much as others and the likes of Pulp Fiction are overrated in my opinion. Purely my opinion. Otherwise, nothing against it. I'm going somewhere else. Anyway, I was entertained from start to finish, probably mostly because of the setting of the time period, because I enjoy the war period in film, so it appealed to me. For me, a great film that I would recommend to fans of war themes, but especially to Tarantino fans.… Expand

The Story and characters were engagingly awesome to watch, right from the start the christoph waltz was menacing and brilliant the jew hunting scene and the girl escaping only later the two sharing a lunch that scene was "Nuts", the basterds intro and there scalping was awesome and the love intrest between the jew girl and soldier the whole set-up until last with it the mission of her revenge and on other side the basterds and the flim stars mission it was getting pretty amazing to watch, the bar fight was shocking the man being father recently his killing was like "wow" and michel's short lived character death was felt unnoticed but surprising, the whole journey with twist and turns until the ending at cinema the killing of film star and then the sudden turn of waltz's character to end war it was shocking and then the fight between jew girl and the solider it was tragic. the movie end and burning theatre with it rest of basterds killing everyone specially hitler it was literally satisfying and then the end with "hooked cross" painting on forehead of walt'z by bradd it was awesome end!Overall it was a true tarantino's show it got blood,shock and awesome talks and ofcourse the foot scene too, the music was awesome and Overall it's a Brilliantly Enteratining and awesome movie!… Expand

My favourite Quentin Tarantino movie. It has a great cast, really dark humour and the story is nearly perfectly interwoven with the characters to create a memorable experience. It is a war movie set in World War 2 but pretty unique in thisMy favourite Quentin Tarantino movie. It has a great cast, really dark humour and the story is nearly perfectly interwoven with the characters to create a memorable experience. It is a war movie set in World War 2 but pretty unique in this regard. I promise you a refreshing and enjoyable movie unlike all you expect. Story: There are multiple arcs that connect. There is Shosanna who hides her Jewish heritage to survive Nazi occupation in Paris and wants revenge for her family. There is lieutenant Aldo Rains called the Apache and his Basterds who are a Jewish-American commando unit behind enemies lines. He demands 100 Nazi scalps from everyone of his man and they strike fear into all their enemies with this. There is Frederick Zoller a German sniper who became famed for his incredible last stand against the allied soldiers. Finally there is Hans Landa an SS officer who enjoys what he is doing and is as smart as cunning. Together their stories create a great overall experience. I truly enjoyed the story. It is told in chapters and I like the style in telling smaller stories that accumulate into a great final. It was excellent from start to finish and rarely were we this impressed by a movie. Simply the best work of Quentin Tarantino. Actors: This is the other great strength of the movie. They have such a great cast that enjoys their roles and director Quentin Tarantino gets the best out of them. Lets start with Brad Pitt as Aldo Raine. He is such a rascal, charming and devilish while also being a father for his man. A fantastic performance. I continue with Christopher Waltz who rightfully won the Oscar for his role as Hans Landa. He is amazingly good and owns each scene he is in. A magnificent bastard. I must praise Melanie Laurent as Shosanna Dreyfus. Such a great performance and sadly she is not rewarded enough. Then there are the Basterds who are amazing too with Eli Roth as Donny Donowitz nicknamed as the Bear Jew, Til Schweiger as Hugo Stiglitz whose talent is trained by the Basterds or Benjamin Novak as Smithson Utvich (Little Man) to just name a view. I think Daniel Brühl as Fredreick Zoller and Diane Kruger as Brigit von Hammersack round up the great performance. I must point out that I do not find a weak performance in the movie. Only a few movies do such a great job in combining the characters so good into the story. Director. I already praised Quentin Tarantino and say it is his best work so far. Visuals / soundtrack: Everything in the movie looks authentic and believable. Again I do not know how historical accurate this is but it does not matter in an entertainment movie. The style is convincing and immersive. The soundtrack uses a lot of tracks from the legend Ennio Morricone. This works well and enhances the movie. Also there are tracks from David Bowie, Zarah Leander and other bigger names. A truly good soundtrack and Oscar worthy for me even if he lost at the awards. Lastly I want to praise the (dark) humour in this. There are many mean situations that are entertaining. Overall this is an excellent movie and so enjoyable to watch. In my circle of friends it is regarded as best movie from Quentin Tarantino. An easy must see recommendation for me. Bonus knowledge (Can be a spoiler for some): The difference in showing the number 3 is true and would immediately be noticed by any German. I do however not know why it is different.… Expand

I haven't watched IB in about 10 years. Safe to say my perspective has changed. I am disappointed in 14yo Jordan. What I once viewed as a Nazi killing romp is now showing so clearly to me as a criticism of war movies and flat out war andI haven't watched IB in about 10 years. Safe to say my perspective has changed. I am disappointed in 14yo Jordan. What I once viewed as a Nazi killing romp is now showing so clearly to me as a criticism of war movies and flat out war and blanket vilification in general. A large majority of this movie glorifies the killing of Nazis with triumphant music and over exaggerated sound and visual effects all the way until the climax. At that point we are shown portions of a German propaganda film screening where Nazis in the crowd gleefully revel in the pictured killing of American soldiers. Quite a similar behavior to that which the movie has caused the audience to experience up until this point. To really nail home this point, once the Nazi theater is set ablaze and the basterds open fire on them like fish in a barrel, we are shown this scene through the exact same framing as the Nazi propaganda showed its hero: a solider in a crow's nest picking off the enemy below set to triumphant music. The criticism here is clear and I love it. (please excuse me for how late I am to properly interpreting this movie). I can't believe I missed it ~10 years ago. Tarantino even goes one step further past his criticism in the final scene wherein he clearly draws a line that shows this film does not sympathize with Nazis in any way. THAT is not the message he wants to convey and it's an increasingly important line to draw as the film ages, unfortunately. I was pleasantly surprised at how many scenes/shots from IB are burned into my brain. The eyes beneath the floorboards, the scooping of the cream, the inferno of maniacal laughter --I love it all. And I'm sure I don't need to retread all of the other reasons this film is incredible. This re-watch may have just bumped this into my all time top 10. I don't ave a single complaint and 2.5 hour flew by. It's on Netflix right now.… Expand

I was expecting a fast paced vigilante action adventure war flick with brad Pitt and his crew slaughtering, ambushing, and fighting Nazis and SS officers in savage ways (disembowling, dismembering, and disfiguring) but that’s not what I got, instead, it was painfully slow draggy, and WAY too talky with not enough nazi killing and not enough action, and we barely got to spend time with the basterds which REALLY pissed me off. This would’ve been SO MUCH BETTER if it just had shoshanna show up at the end and have the majority focus on the nazi killing adventure and was A LOT faster paced… Expand

Inglourious Basterds

Tarantino's obsession and passion over historical events started reaching to the screen from this, indeed glorious project. I'd like to consider this as the writer and director Quentin Tarantino's intermediate state of his creative professional life. This is where his career was in transition period and you can practically see him wire his love for cheap thrills into a much more heavy themes expressed majestically on large scales. His cinema grew bigger with diverse subjects, meticulous world and unique old style techniques. Long theatrical takes that tests both the actor's talent and sparks up the love for old theatre plays among the audience, his conversation aren't funny for the laughs anymore.

This is where I feel he has matured the most as a writer. What was intended to be a distraction is part of a job, now. It is a responsibility. And Tarantino being aware of his influence as a filmmaker and of his work, he loads the guns with poetry and punches with self-explanatory metaphors. The blood flooded on the screen isn't a luxury but a necessary scream that yells out the love. A small kid loving the cinema for what it is.

That innocence is what drew me in, in this latter stage of Tarantino's work, something that I didn't feel in his previous work. His rich characters that he always shines in his film like an emblem is carrying enormous depth and history. And carrying most of that load is Brad Pitt flexing his comedic skills along with Christoph Waltz whose mixture of fear and power conjures you on the screen like no one in the film. But I lean towards Melanie Laurent's character every time she appears on screen. And I have been wondering for a while, why is it that now. For among these Inglourious Basterds that are pragmatic and resemble a lot to the people we live around, hers is cinematically empathetic and offers a hand for us to hold onto in this cold war.… Expand

Considering it's not a Western, or a mere Action film, Inglourious Basterds is quite possibly the most entertaining movie Tarantino has ever made so far, and that's due to many reasons. Besides that it has all common tropes and hallmarks you’ll find, and throughly enjoy, in his movies, Inglourious Basterds is a very unique entry in the extraordinary director's career. The visual style has never become so remarkably striking in any of other Tarantino's movies.

From the opening moments, this movie proves that Tarantino is not just a master of dialogue, but also a master of suspense, but in his very own manner. Of course, the dialogue is the most powerful aspect in this scene, and in another suspenseful scene halfway through, but what Tarantino displays doubles down on the impact of suspense in a way you've never seen before; In the most Tarantino way he never showed before that his fans, like me, know very well!

The idiosyncratic visual style didn't stop dazzling me with its contribution in suspense, because it simply served at every level. It has a sense of pulp fantasy, and slapstick humor that, oddly, fits with the prevailing tone, maybe because this movie doesn't seem to have a specific tone. And what's more weirder is that the movie never feels inconsistent.

The performances here are plainly phenomenal. Thanks to the stellar cast that includes, Christoph Waltz whose Oscar-wining performance made Hans Landa one of the best movie villains of this century so far, Brad Pitt who is the only reason I had some hope of victory against Landa's cunning, and Mélanie Laurent who played Shosanna, one of the most interesting characters I've seen in any film in a while. There are many questions left unanswered about her character, and that's exactly what makes her character so compelling. Michael Fassbender also delivered a brilliant performance as always, most notably in the famous " German accent" scene that was the only great thing in a boring, monotonous Chapter Four that made me feel, for the first time in a Tarantino movie, that the dialogue scenes overstayed their welcome.

Speaking of dialogue scenes, this movie has some of the most iconic lines in amazing dialogue scenes thanks, in large part, to Christoph Waltz scene-stealer appearance. That being said, if there is only one of Tarantino's trademarks that I felt was missing while watching this movie, it would be the riveting, seemingly empty talk in a long scene Tarantino is famous for. Don't get me wrong, I said more than once that this movie has some of the most iconic lines, and some of the most clever dialogues ever put to film, but, as a Tarantino fan, I felt that something is missing in these dialogue scenes, and I found that it's the long talk that explores the character, and delve deeper in his personality and psyche.

Another issue, and this time I mean a real issue, I've with this movie is its ending, its very ending. While it couldn't be more satisfying to watch, I found defeating Hans Landa by fooling him in such easy way is completely absurd, and totally contradicts with all the antagonist's wits and slyness. For me, that was very hard to swallow.

Inglourious Basterds looks pretty good. As a matter of fact, I think it has the best cinematography among all the other Tarantino films. Mostly because of the nifty classic use of shadows and lights that matches perfectly the setting of the movie. Adding to that, Inglourious Basterds also has a killer soundtrack.

Inglourious Basterds is a maniac, thrill ride that has one of the best cast ensemble ever put to film. It's a rare case when a director's self-indulgence causes more good than harm. It's a classic Tarantino!

The guilt of this is the incorrigible taste of Tarantino, who likes to transform a regular film into a collage of elements imported from a thousand and one genres of cinema. Sometimes the collage turns out to be funny, but in this case it was stupid like a Frankenstein monster. Credibility was never part of the script, absolutely miserable and illogical. The characters are caricatures and never show themselves capable of reaching the audience, with their forced dialogues and theatrical postures. It features a strong cast, where you can see Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Eli Roth or Diane Kruger, but they are not to blame for the crap. They did what Tarantino wanted, the way he pointed them out. The film still has good costumes but most of the scenarios do not come as a surprise either. There are some well-done scenes, but most of them are due to a huge performance by Waltz, undoubtedly the actor in the best shape in this film and the biggest positive aspect to point out. Despite being a minor actor, he shone more than the main ones, stealing the scene from Roth and Pitt (this must be his worst film work), deserving the loud applause of the audience.… Expand

Dynamic dystopic WW2 drama of a hazardous plot to kill Hitler. Brad Pitt shines as star in one of his most mature roles; Fassbinder and Waltz also catches the attention of viewer in their roles of SS officers. One of biggest surprises of 2009.

The main villain is very well preformed character, and is everything a really evil villain should be. The plot is good at times, but feels very long and slow at many times. My biggest problem with this movie is the good guys; the Bastards. They are so brutal and merciless I couldn't like them, or even side with them while watching the movie. Killing the bad guy don't necessarily make you the good guy. Because of this personal problem, I give this movie a 7 instead of an 8.… Expand

To begin, this movie sets the cliché notion that Jews=automatically good guys, and all "Nadzees"=automatically evil non-humans who deserve whatever comes to them. This movie serves as propaganda to justify the inhumane treatment of, and genocide of, the
Germans - by dehumanizing them like any effective hate propaganda does to those it deems the "enemy". As someone who detests senseless violence, gore and death, I found this 0 star movie rating fitting.

While this movie is classified as fiction, in certain ways, ways that may not be common knowledge, this movie does have an element of truth to it - the brutality and inhumane treatment of "evil Nadzees" by Jewish supremacist fanatics, and others.* For context: Since the 1800s, within Jewish supremacist circles, the idea of eradicating all Germans (and
whites along with Western civilization and Christianity in general) can
be found in various quotes from the early Zionist and Communist
movement leaders (Moses Hess, Karl Marx, etc). As a result, this sentiment grew so much that the Daily Express from March 24, 1934 featured the headline, "Judea declares War on Germany". This hatred of Germans and whites in general did not begin due to WW2, but still today we are told to view these groups in a negative light, through movies like this.

*In particular, part of this movie may be based off of the actions of a Jewish supremacist group called Nakam founded by Abba Kovner. After WW2, not being satisfied with the high number of deaths from the War, Kovner wanted more Germans dead. To accomplish this, Nakam went and abducted random Europeans and drove them out to a forest, where they then shot them. Another genocidal act was when Nakam members broke into the concentration camp where German POWs were being held, and coated the bread with arsenic to kill the German POW inmates (called "Plan B"). This was after the failed attempt to poison the water supply to kill
German civilians in cities such as Hamburg and Munich ("Plan A"). Also, Jewish partisan gangs roamed around post-WW2 occupied Germany, seizing and occupying the homes of German refugees. In addition to all this, Churchill ordered the expulsion of 15 million Germans from their land, causing 3 million of them to die. From 1939-1945, nearly 7 million German POWs were sent to Soviet gulags, most of them to never return, and anyone fighting the Soviets
(including Russians) were deemed "Nazi collaborators" were also sentenced to mutilation, rape, torture and death. Also, Eisenhower's camps held 1.7 million Germans who were starved, not given shelter, were tortured, maimed and murdered at will by the Allied guards. If
all that wasn't enough, after WW2, the Soviets invaded Germany and occupied the eastern half of the country. The brutal rape and murder of 2 million German women and girls took place by mainly Jewish and oriental Soviet units, causing many other German women and their children to commit suicide to avoid that same fate. Why weren't all these events accounted for in the
movie? Why was the German male made out to be some evil nonhuman worthy of the most horrific torture, when the average German had no part in war crimes? At the end of WW2, Eisenhower said of the Germans, "It's a pity we could not we have killed more". The war crimes committed by Jewish supremacists, the Allied leaders and the Soviets should have been acknowledged in this movie, to make it more accurate with reality, and reduce the glaringly-obvious bias of the movie. The Dresden terror bombings were another example of war crimes perpetrated against the German civilians, which scorched a non-military/civilian city, killing countless men,
women and children. Incorporating these facts into the movie would impart a more rounded perspective to the viewers, even in a fictionalized genre. Or is the goal to leave the viewers with an ignorant and highly-skewed perspective of history, along with a
supposedly- justified hatred for Germans? But some more things don't add up. Knowing what we know now: Why was there no mention of the horrors that the Communists committed against millions of innocent civilians, under the direction of certain leaders who just happened to be Jewish? For example, all the death and suffering caused by Communists in places like the (then) USSR, Ukraine (esp. Holodomor, killed 8 million people), Katyn Forest Massacre, etc.? Why did Torrentino not make a similar-themed revenge movie, with the antagonists as Communists? Torrentino seems to have a penchant for revenge fantasies, but this one was just tasteless. I doubt anyone who went through the horrors of WW2 would ever want their horrors
twisted into a "fun" or "funny" perspective. Disgusting trash.… Expand

I even cannot tell what exactly I liked the most. I have nothing but praise!

Above all, I must admit - Tarantino is incredibly gifted screenwriter and director! Judging by Basterds he put a lot of efforts in writing the screenplay. His holistic and meticulous approach is noticeable. It is hard to imagine how much time did he spend on writing the script.

When it comes to the cast, I am full of praise for Christoph Waltz, who was magnificent as Hans Landa. Undoubtedly, he is extremely talented actor! And no wonder that he won a lot of praises for this role. The character made by him was precise, convincing, sparkling! It was such a pleasure to see him playing despite the fact that his character was negative one.

Also, I cannot dismiss a role of Brad Pitt! It goes without saying, that he did a great job as well, however, the most striking for me was his his accent! Adorable! If I hadn't heard any American speaking, I would have thought that this is how all Americans are talking!

Of course, all the cast did an amazing job! All actors were on their places. I mean that I cannot imagine other actors in these roles. Perhaps, it is a merit of the director too, who did all right.

Generally speaking, the plot is intriguing, provoking an interest, carrying viewers with it. During the movie I was wondering – what is going to happen next? So the film captured all my attention. I even was afraid of breathing to not miss any important details. And in the end, I stood up and gave a big clap as a sign of respect to the crew, to the outstanding movie!

I was not focus on historical, moral or whatever aspect of the story. I watched it as a story which was made up by one genius.

I hope, I inspired you to see the film! Believe me, it is worth it!… Expand

'Inglourious Basterds' focuses on a colonel named Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) who is hunting down a Jewish family, the Dreyfuss family. In the first chapter of the film, we see that he has killed the majority of the family in one of the most intense opening scenes in film. One of the young girls in the family, who goes by the name Shosanna Dreyfuss (Melanie Laurent) runs away after her entire family were killed. Landa decides that he will try and track her down as soon as possible.

We then meet a Lieutenant named Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) who plans on leading an army of Jewish soldiers to swear revenge on the Nazis as they are invading France. They manage to persuade some of the Nazi soldiers to tell them where they are heading, and where they are.

We later see that Shosanna has been in hiding for quite some time, pretending to own a French cinema, this is where a young soldier named Frederick Zoller (Daniel Bruhl) who seems strangely interested in Shosanna.

Michael Fassbender plays Lieutenant Archie Hicox, a British undercover soldier who must meet up with German actress Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) and she will be able to tell him where the Nazis will be during a premier of a German film called "Nation's Pride", and someone sinister will also be attending.

Tarantino knows how he wants his movies to look, the dialogue is very clean cut and almost every scene is filmed to the most tiny, and perfect detail. The actors such as; Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Eli Roth, Michael Fassbender, Diane Kruger and Melanie Laurent all play their part perfectly. Waltz definitely shines as the "Jew Hunter" Landa, and this is a very, very ambitious film. Everything from the story, to the different characters, right down to the violence just shows that Tarantino is one of the most inventive directors working.

Bold, dangerous, and certainly timely.… Expand

I enjoyed this movie very much. I've been a Q.T. fan for as long as he's making movies. Although, this isn't as good as his crowning achievement, Pulp Fiction, it comes in as a close second. My friend feels that it started slowly, and then itI enjoyed this movie very much. I've been a Q.T. fan for as long as he's making movies. I thought it was great from start to finish. The dialogue was excellent. Scenes were often funny, but extremely intense at the same time. Brad Pitt speaking Eye-Tallian almost made me spray soda out of my nose. Great acting, action, and dialogue with classic Tarantino sprinkled throughout the film. If you're a Q.T. fan, you should check out this movie.… Expand

Another great film from Tarantino a really good watch that's interesting right to the end. Christoph Waltz steals the show and the story although far fetched is interesting and compelling. Not only Quentin Tarantino's greatest film achievement, but one of the best films of all time, it's up there with Citizen Kane, Godfather, Fight Club, Vertigo, Taxi Driver.....

Defiantly the greatest war film ever. The narrative is so clever and original, The Dialogue is fantastic (of course), acting is great and it's also very funny. Christoph Waltz performance is some of the greatest acting I've ever seen, very frighting and also quite funny when he is not killing people. The ending to this movie is perfect, "I think this might be my masterpiece" And It certainly is Tarantino's Masterpiece. The Score of this film is also catchy and brilliant. Any Tarantino haters are idiots, as he is by far the greatest director of the past two decades. His Film are so original, even if he may take a lot inspiration from the masters that have came before him, he is able to craft some of the best movies to ever be put on screen… Expand

Christoph Waltz does a great job of bringing out the unnerving and cunning personality of Landa. Some intense close-ups of facial expressions and a suitable soundtrack raise the tension during Landa's interrogations. The 'inglorious basterds' and to some extent the high ranking Nazis themselves however were unremarkable to me. Their caricatured and cliche antics failed to humor me and I thought their characters were woefully underdeveloped.… Expand

I mostly like Quentin Tarantino and I really enjoyed "Inglorious Bastards" until the final act in which this film went completely idiotic. I'm okay with historical inaccuracy, because I care about the story and if the story makes sense in its own world with its own rules everything is OK. This film, however goes completely against the logic it established for itself and therefore ruined the ending for me.

I would have rated this with a "9", because I really did enjoy the most of it. But the terrible ending makes me downgrade this into a "7".… Expand

I think the graphic violence to come ith a Tarantino film does eventually work in this film as a simplistic styled message in how society works. Those who are extreme and act, will be punished and die. Damned, to hell. But those who are extreme but cheat the system through a layer of the people who crave satisfaction with formality come out on top in this world.… Expand

I am going back and reviewing all Tarantino films i have watched in conjunction with Hateful 8 release. Right from the get go Tarantino goes full steam ahead with possibly his best scene in any of his movies, and from then we know we'reI am going back and reviewing all Tarantino films i have watched in conjunction with Hateful 8 release. Right from the get go Tarantino goes full steam ahead with possibly his best scene in any of his movies, and from then we know we're gettng a treat. The build is well done and Waltz is a sight to behold. Brad Pitt brings an absolutely over the top performance but he helps the comedy in this film move along. The film isn't as powerful as some previous works but is still a hell of a watch.

Inglorious Bastards is a stupid and dumb movie. While that may be the reason people will love it is for precise that reason that I don’t. Tarintino is better than this. While that may be the reason people will love it is for precise that reason that I don’t. Tarintino is better than this. With films like Pulp Fiction Tarintino has shown that he knows how to write characters and amazing dialogue. Instead, Tarintino throws that out the window in favor of cartoony dialogue that is more stupid than fun or rigid dialogue neither of which are good exploits of his talents. The performances given make this dialogue work especially Christoph Waltz as the villain. Nonetheless it is all for not in the big dumb climax that puts gore and spectacle over characters and story something Tarintino is usually good at not doing. Adding to the frustration is that Tarintino decided to use World War II and the Holocaust as his setting. Making a joke out of all of the men and women who suffered through the war, risked their lives to hide Jews, risked their lives to fight in it, and are ashamed of what their Nazi fathers did. Tarintino you have a lot of talents and this film uses none of them. Its one thing to see a dumb stupid movie its another to see it admist one of history’s most tragic events and by a director who is capable of so much more.… Expand

Yes, this film is full of painful historical inaccuracies, and is one of the least historically accurate films ever made. But, this isn't really a historical war film as much as it is a revenge story, which pays tribute to nazisploitation cinema. Now, nazisploitation is never historically accurate, so there is no need for it to be.
Now, this movie is absolutely epic! The film is full of long dialogue scenes, leading up to scenes of exciting brutality and violence. The lengthy dialogue is always kept interesting with comedy and tension. The climax is probably the best part of this film. Full of shocking unexpected twists and turns, very stylistic camera work and imagery, and fast paced, exciting action, it is truly a great scene.
The film also contains a lot of great performances, especially the performance by Christoph Waltz, and has some great camerawork and filmmaking techniques. A masterpiece.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Inglorious Basterds is my second favorite WW2 movie (number one being Saving Private Ryan). This movie is extremely different from any other WW2 movie as it takes non-fiction, and adds more fiction than any other WW2 movie out there. I mean, Hitler does die. But the movie is also very realistic as well. One of my favorite characters in the film is Col. Hans Landa (Christopher Waltz). Christopher Waltz gives an amazing performance as a cold hearted Nazi Colonel named Hans Landa, who is nicknamed in the film as the Jewish Hunter. He is exactly that. The Inglorious Basterds humiliate him at the end by carving a swastika into his head. This movie will please Tarantino fans because of its random violent moments where they can be taking but a second later they can be blowing each others heads off. Great movie overall. 8/10… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Quentin Tarantino: well-made, excessively violent, revengeful, and tackles tough subjects with dark humor. Inglourious Basterds fits the bill once again. Taking place during World War II France, the Germans have occupied and the use of language was brilliant. The true tell-tale sign of which character was which is in the tongue. And as we find out later, can also lead to death if spoken with an incorrect accent.

Shoshanna, our real hero, loses her family almost at the beginning when they are given up after being hidden in the cellar. This starts our journey of Nazi killing and so much violence I could throw up. The extreme violence and gore portrayed can almost give a false sense of emotion, because some are forced to look away and find the entire story revolting, perhaps because of the scalping and the blood instead of the story, but that's just me. The Inglourious Basterds are the heroes of the story – what gives us hope in this extremely hopeless situation. Without an opponent, the Nazis steamroll the entire population and it's hard to watch. With giving us hope and a light at the end of the table, enjoyment can be found. However, I don't like the pomp and circumstance that either side gives to death.

The Nazis (Hitler especially) seems to be horrified by the fact that someone may oppose him and silences most knowings about the Basterds, despite the notoriety of the swastikas on foreheads because once a Nazi, always a Nazi. Shoshanna is alive and well four years later, with the ever-handsome Marcel. "I don't want to be your friend." Why couldn't it all end there? Instead, Frederick Zoller decides he is much too important to be dismissed by any girl. He's intrigued and finds a way to force himself into her life. What he doesn't know is that there is literally zero chance in hell of this ever working out because NAZIS KILLED HER WHOLE FAMILY! Cruel humor, huh. She's even reunited with the man who killed them, yet remains unrecognized.

Now we have Shoshanna and the Basterds, both wanting to destroy this movie premiere and kill the Nazis in two different suicide missions. Shoshanna's goes pretty much without a hitch, but the basterds have a completely different situation. They're found out, many in the squadron are killed, and as it turns out, Landa is even a double agent. It's almost as if we know how the movie is going to end, but it's the story that is so uncertain.

"Are you so used to the Nazis kissing your ass you've forgotten what the word 'no' means?" "I'm not a man you can say 'go away' to." And there we say goodbye to Shoshanna and Zoller. Don't Tarantino's movies always end in death of everyone we like? Ultimately, the cinema explodes and there's a deal with Landa to be had. The basterds just do what they do best – kill when they don't need to and harm forever. In a war who can we really root for? Maybe one side over another, but wouldn't life be better with neither.… Expand

"A basterd's work is never done." You know, of course I understand that violence is a part of war. It's unavoidable. He has also made what could arguably be considered the most audacious World War II movie of all-time. If you think there are rules for this sort of motion picture, guess again. And it's not just that Tarantino is using the spaghetti western as his template; it's that the sheer unpredictability of where all this is going makes it compelling from beginning to end. Even the film's occasional artistic flourishes (such as chapter titles and out-of-period music pieces) work within the context of what Tarantino is trying to accomplish. This is clearly an attempt by the director to expand his range and step outside of the comfort zone in which he has worked for the majority of his career.

Tarantino brings to Inglourious Basterds his not inconsiderable knowledge of films. The movie is awash in references - some subtle, some obvious - that run the gamut from D-grade exploitation flicks to A-list classics. This is not, as has been reported in some places, a remake of the 1978 feature The Inglorious Bastards, although the title is an homage. Reportedly, some of Tarantino's nascent versions of the screenplay used elements of the earlier film, but those are mostly gone in the final edition. This is pretty much 100% Tarantino, which could be good or bad, depending on your opinion of the man's work.

Tarantino loves dialogue and, between taut, brutal action sequences, there's a lot of talking. The conversations aren't as elliptical as some of those in the director's previous efforts, but there are some intriguing moments - a Nazi providing a detailed comparison between Jew-hunting and rat-hunting, a 20 questions-like guessing game with the answer of "King Kong," and a reverse Cinderella encounter in which having a foot to fit the shoe is not a good thing. (Tarantino gets his trademark foot fetish shot in this scene.) There is a point to the talk, however, that goes beyond the filmmaker showing off his skill with words. All these scenes precede instances of sudden, violent action and the threat of bloodshed is heavy in the air. With every sentence, the tension mounts. Tarantino uses these sequences to prime the audience, teasing them until the suspense is nearly unbearable, then releasing it in one explosive burst.

Watching Inglourious Basterds, I was reminded of Paul Verhoeven's Black Book and Bryan Singer's Valkyrie, both of which contain themes and ideas that are echoed here. This is no Schindler's List. It's not about nobility or sacrifice. It's about the dirty, bloody side of war. Yes, there's heroism, but a lot is hidden away in order for those who receive medals to retain a patina of valor. Inglourious Basterds is suffused with dark humor - so much so that it's tempting to label it an action/comedy. There are laugh-out-loud moments, and not one guffaw is the result of something unintentional. This is nothing new for Tarantino, who has always interwoven humor with violence, but its incorporation here, amidst some of his bleakest material, is refreshingly unsettling.

Inglourious Basterds isn't as fresh and freewheeling as Pulp Fiction, but Tarantino is now an established director and a known quantity. That he is able to successfully pull off some of what he does in this movie is a testimony to his skill at both writing and directing. Yes - he borrows heavily and shamelessly from other movies, but it's in the unique fusion of those sources and styles that he achieves his success. Despite having so many antecedents, Inglourious Basterds quickly carves out its own niche. The running length is a gaudy 153 minutes, yet the film moves so smoothly and the moving parts come together so cleanly that the time passes easily. This is the movie I have been awaiting since Pulp Fiction. It's one hell of an enjoyable ride into the nightmare that was Nazi-occupied France, and thinking you know how it all ends doesn't make it so.… Expand

I am not a Tarantino fan with the exception of Reservoir Dogs (which I cannot fully explain), but this film is something else! I can also identify and understand it is not for everyone; however, it is undeniably unique, captivating, entertaining, twitch inducing, and during a few moments, difficult to watch, yet I only enjoy the more I see it.
