On the page, the film felt mostly flat and convoluted. A few scenes bore the QT stamp of genius, but the sum total didn't seem to reach its potential. I'm happy to say the film is better than the script. Tarantino is so lauded as a writer that we often forget his visual prowess, and, more importantly, his work with actors. The success of IG is due largely to some stunning performances, mostly by the European actors. Waltz is as good as the critics say: barbaric, witty, multi-dimensional. The movie is worth seeing alone for his giddy turn as Nazi opportunist. Diane Kruger's performance will likely go overlooked, but she is sizzling as German actress Bridget von Hammersmark. Brad Pitt is a weak link in the cast, but he's adequate and occasionally funny in his campy role as Lt. Raine. ((minor spoiler)) My biggest complaint is that the doubling of two key third act plots diminishes both. In what should be the most suspenseful moments of the film, there is little suspense because, in essence, we have two groups trying to achieve the same goal. One will surely succeed if the other fails. Never do the two plots (Basterds/Dreyfus) contravene, which feels like a lost opportunity. At the very least, there's a whole lot of bloody revenge and some much needed, albeit revisionist, catharis. Expand

What is interesting is how each individual scene is perfectly crafted to bring about some kind of intense emotion in the viewer, whether that emotion is fear, disgust, paranoia, joy, etc. While historically silly, this is probably one of the best films I've seen that transmits so many of the emotions we associate with war. If that doesn't interest you, then it's probably safe to say that you won't like this movie. Expand

QT is authentically inspirational and eccentric Director in the same time. His previous best works were: PULP FICTION (1994) and KILL BILL (2007). Seem to me, he always finds something new to put on every film of his. The story is about a group of soldiers led by Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), who known as The Basterds. They had mission to terminate every Nazi with their fiercely-sadistic way. It is also about a jewish girl (Melanie Laurent), unfortunately was the only survivor when Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) killed her entire family. Afterwards, she ran a cinema that incidentally rented by Nazi for their important occasion. She has a revenge-plan to demolish whole cinema with all Gestapo and Nazi superior inside. Simply, QT never focuses on one-man-show. With his unique directing, QT takes us to his world where anything could be different. From first chapter, we already serve by thoughtful and memorable dialogue. I think the power of QT movie is on the dialogue, unpredicted plots, sometimes comical, and fills with memorable characters in each of his movie. If you free-minded enough then you can enjoy QT movies. Like Col. Hans Landa said (when he was on the farmer house on early scene), I ask your permission to switch to English for the remainder of the conversation.. Well, lets enjoy QT language.

Wait, did anyone noticed that bastards is spelled wrong? Doesn't matter, this is a movie not a book. I was a semi-fan of all the violence and the blood. The scalping of the Nazi's head did disturb me at first but after the first one I was okay. Critics always say that adding action and special effects is like a gimmick to lure in audiences. But the action and blood in this movie isn't the case. If this movie was less tamed and not as graphic it still would be an awesome movie. But what I am not a fan of is adding two different story lines. They meet up at the end but there still two seprate story lines. I also found it interesting that as the plot was building up we where introduced to the morals and values that the Basterds had. I found myself routing for the Nazis. But that's how Quentin Tarantino does his movies, with a plot that doesn't introduce a villain. My favorite part was the bar scene. It was trilling because I had no idea if someone was going to fire. Overall, this film is very well written and directed. Expand

It's his unique stories and methodical attention to detail that have always stood out to me. For all you haters out there, the one thing you can't deny is Tarantino's unique ability to bring out the best in everyone he works with, and that is why many times, the cast members of his films earn Oscar nominations. Inglourious Basterds is another uniquely strange story that just works, because of Tarantino. As has become his signature, the story is broken up into seemingly unrelated stories that all come together in a terrific ending. The story centers around a group of Jewish-American soldiers in World War II, whose assignment was to go into France, undercover, and track down and slaughter Nazis. It's a terrific cast led by Brad Pitt, but to me he wasn't so much the star of this film, that honor belongs to Christopher Waltz, who in his first major role, did win the Oscar for best supporting actor. It's a strong story and a great film, but something bothered me about it. Inglourious Basterds is of course a fictional story, so the attention to detail, such as having everyone speaking in their native languages, seemed someone unnecessary to me. That combined with subtitles that moved at the speed of light, made the story somewhat hard for me to follow. That's why I watched it a few times before reviewing it. There is no denying that this is one hell of a story with another tremendous cast, that deserved every award that it's won, however Tarantino's attention to detail, usually a strength, did take away from the film, as a whole, and did make some parts difficult to follow. First we have the desire for revenge, represented by Shosanna; here we notice the famous persistent and meticulous job of Beatrix Kiddo, and the sarcastic and dedicated work of Jules Winnfield with Vincent Vega; the shocking thing is that it all occurs at one time in one place, rather than the search that we saw on Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction.
Second, is visible the minimalism characteristic of Tarantino, because he shows too much with little things and express a few with big things. For example: in the dialogue between Coronel Landa and Mr. LaPadite about the rats, what we actually see is a way of changing a whole ideology about what people think of Nazis and Jews; in contrast, when all the important Nazis are gadder in the cinema, and Shosanna with Marcel execute their plan, we see an enormous disaster, but is nothing more than vengeance.
Finally, the classic fragmented reality is very well developed. Tarantino put us on his labyrinth and force us to solve his puzzle. The only failure of this film is that all the fragments (chapters) are order by time, nothing is timeless, and the development is one direction; in the other Tarantino pictures we move forward, then travel to the past and then finish in the present, preparing to jump to another time again; and that could enrich a lot Inglourious Basterds.
The direction, music and script are just perfect and Christoph Waltz is astonishing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Inglorious Basterds is my second favorite WW2 movie (number one being Saving Private Ryan). This movie is extremely different from any other WW2 movie as it takes non-fiction, and adds more fiction than any other WW2 movie out there. I mean, Hitler does die. But the movie is also very realistic as well. One of my favorite characters in the film is Col. Hans Landa (Christopher Waltz). Christopher Waltz gives an amazing performance as a cold hearted Nazi Colonel named Hans Landa, who is nicknamed in the film as the Jewish Hunter. He is exactly that. The Inglorious Basterds humiliate him at the end by carving a swastika into his head. This movie will please Tarantino fans because of its random violent moments where they can be taking but a second later they can be blowing each others heads off. Great movie overall. 8/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Quentin Tarantino: well-made, excessively violent, revengeful, and tackles tough subjects with dark humor. Inglourious Basterds fits the bill once again. Taking place during World War II France, the Germans have occupied and the use of language was brilliant. The true tell-tale sign of which character was which is in the tongue. And as we find out later, can also lead to death if spoken with an incorrect accent.

Shoshanna, our real hero, loses her family almost at the beginning when they are given up after being hidden in the cellar. This starts our journey of Nazi killing and so much violence I could throw up. The extreme violence and gore portrayed can almost give a false sense of emotion, because some are forced to look away and find the entire story revolting, perhaps because of the scalping and the blood instead of the story, but that's just me. The Inglourious Basterds are the heroes of the story – what gives us hope in this extremely hopeless situation. Without an opponent, the Nazis steamroll the entire population and it's hard to watch. With giving us hope and a light at the end of the table, enjoyment can be found. However, I don't like the pomp and circumstance that either side gives to death.

The Nazis (Hitler especially) seems to be horrified by the fact that someone may oppose him and silences most knowings about the Basterds, despite the notoriety of the swastikas on foreheads because once a Nazi, always a Nazi. Shoshanna is alive and well four years later, with the ever-handsome Marcel. "I don't want to be your friend." Why couldn't it all end there? Instead, Frederick Zoller decides he is much too important to be dismissed by any girl. He's intrigued and finds a way to force himself into her life. What he doesn't know is that there is literally zero chance in hell of this ever working out because NAZIS KILLED HER WHOLE FAMILY! Cruel humor, huh. She's even reunited with the man who killed them, yet remains unrecognized.

Now we have Shoshanna and the Basterds, both wanting to destroy this movie premiere and kill the Nazis in two different suicide missions. Shoshanna's goes pretty much without a hitch, but the basterds have a completely different situation. They're found out, many in the squadron are killed, and as it turns out, Landa is even a double agent. It's almost as if we know how the movie is going to end, but it's the story that is so uncertain.

"Are you so used to the Nazis kissing your ass you've forgotten what the word 'no' means?" "I'm not a man you can say 'go away' to." And there we say goodbye to Shoshanna and Zoller. Don't Tarantino's movies always end in death of everyone we like? Ultimately, the cinema explodes and there's a deal with Landa to be had. The basterds just do what they do best – kill when they don't need to and harm forever. In a war who can we really root for? Maybe one side over another, but wouldn't life be better with neither.

Tarantino makes sure that the art of cinema kills- literally!- the whining of the society and so does he with a fabulous cast.

Inglourious Basterds

Tarantino's obsession and passion over historical events started reaching to the screen from this, indeed glorious project. I'd like to consider this as the writer and director Quentin Tarantino's intermediate state of his creative professional life. This is where his career was in transition period and you can practically see him wire his love for cheap thrills into a much more heavy themes expressed majestically on large scales. His cinema grew bigger with diverse subjects, meticulous world and unique old style techniques. Long theatrical takes that tests both the actor's talent and sparks up the love for old theatre plays among the audience, his conversation aren't funny for the laughs anymore.

This is where I feel he has matured the most as a writer. What was intended to be a distraction is part of a job, now. It is a responsibility. And Tarantino being aware of his influence as a filmmaker and of his work, he loads the guns with poetry and punches with self-explanatory metaphors. The blood flooded on the screen isn't a luxury but a necessary scream that yells out the love. A small kid loving the cinema for what it is.

That innocence is what drew me in, in this latter stage of Tarantino's work, something that I didn't feel in his previous work. His rich characters that he always shines in his film like an emblem is carrying enormous depth and history. And carrying most of that load is Brad Pitt flexing his comedic skills along with Christoph Waltz whose mixture of fear and power conjures you on the screen like no one in the film. But I lean towards Melanie Laurent's character every time she appears on screen. And I have been wondering for a while, why is it that now. For among these Inglourious Basterds that are pragmatic and resemble a lot to the people we live around, hers is cinematically empathetic and offers a hand for us to hold onto in this cold war.

Paying Homages, romanticizing cinema, getting into characters, glorifying violence, setting scenes with a captivating dialogue, and displaying delicious food; all the trademarks Tarantino usually boasts are here twice as much as in all hisPaying Homages, romanticizing cinema, getting into characters, glorifying violence, setting scenes with a captivating dialogue, and displaying delicious food; all the trademarks Tarantino usually boasts are here twice as much as in all his other movies.

Considering it's not a Western, or a mere Action film, Inglourious Basterds is quite possibly the most entertaining movie Tarantino has ever made so far, and that's due to many reasons. Besides that it has all common tropes and hallmarks you’ll find, and throughly enjoy, in his movies, Inglourious Basterds is a very unique entry in the extraordinary director's career. The visual style has never become so remarkably striking in any of other Tarantino's movies.

From the opening moments, this movie proves that Tarantino is not just a master of dialogue, but also a master of suspense, but in his very own manner. Of course, the dialogue is the most powerful aspect in this scene, and in another suspenseful scene halfway through, but what Tarantino displays doubles down on the impact of suspense in a way you've never seen before; In the most Tarantino way he never showed before that his fans, like me, know very well!

The idiosyncratic visual style didn't stop dazzling me with its contribution in suspense, because it simply served at every level. It has a sense of pulp fantasy, and slapstick humor that, oddly, fits with the prevailing tone, maybe because this movie doesn't seem to have a specific tone. And what's more weirder is that the movie never feels inconsistent.

The performances here are plainly phenomenal. Thanks to the stellar cast that includes, Christoph Waltz whose Oscar-wining performance made Hans Landa one of the best movie villains of this century so far, Brad Pitt who is the only reason I had some hope of victory against Landa's cunning, and Mélanie Laurent who played Shosanna, one of the most interesting characters I've seen in any film in a while. There are many questions left unanswered about her character, and that's exactly what makes her character so compelling. Michael Fassbender also delivered a brilliant performance as always, most notably in the famous " German accent" scene that was the only great thing in a boring, monotonous Chapter Four that made me feel, for the first time in a Tarantino movie, that the dialogue scenes overstayed their welcome.

Speaking of dialogue scenes, this movie has some of the most iconic lines in amazing dialogue scenes thanks, in large part, to Christoph Waltz scene-stealer appearance. That being said, if there is only one of Tarantino's trademarks that I felt was missing while watching this movie, it would be the riveting, seemingly empty talk in a long scene Tarantino is famous for. Don't get me wrong, I said more than once that this movie has some of the most iconic lines, and some of the most clever dialogues ever put to film, but, as a Tarantino fan, I felt that something is missing in these dialogue scenes, and I found that it's the long talk that explores the character, and delve deeper in his personality and psyche.

Another issue, and this time I mean a real issue, I've with this movie is its ending, its very ending. While it couldn't be more satisfying to watch, I found defeating Hans Landa by fooling him in such easy way is completely absurd, and totally contradicts with all the antagonist's wits and slyness. For me, that was very hard to swallow.

Inglourious Basterds looks pretty good. As a matter of fact, I think it has the best cinematography among all the other Tarantino films. Mostly because of the nifty classic use of shadows and lights that matches perfectly the setting of the movie. Adding to that, Inglourious Basterds also has a killer soundtrack.

Inglourious Basterds is a maniac, thrill ride that has one of the best cast ensemble ever put to film. It's a rare case when a director's self-indulgence causes more good than harm. It's a classic Tarantino!

Although I liked it a lot, I think it's probably not for everyone. The ending was really cool, but by the time we get to it, we have long hours of talking that, while I wasn't bored, probably won't be to everyone's taste. However, the film appealed to me, so I was entertained the whole time, and I'm not some Tarantino fan. I like his films, but I don't buy them as much as others and the likes of Pulp Fiction are overrated in my opinion. Purely my opinion. Otherwise, nothing against it. I'm going somewhere else. Anyway, I was entertained from start to finish, probably mostly because of the setting of the time period, because I enjoy the war period in film, so it appealed to me. For me, a great film that I would recommend to fans of war themes, but especially to Tarantino fans. Expand

The start of the film begins with a homage to Sergio leone's 'The good, the bad and the ugly.' It's a tense beginning, the nazis searching a house for jews and the officer reminded me of the child catcher in Chitty, chitty bang bang. This scene sets the film up well and you feel that this is going to be a classic. Let me point out that three quarters of the film is subtitled and features long winded conversations that don't really add a lot to the plot. The acting, in particular the character of 'the jew hunter' is very good. Brad Pitt's character is at times funny but isn't the most memorable. the film looks beautiful as does every Tarrantino film. I thought Mike Myers character was very well acted and brought about an 'Ah!' factor when realising who he was. I feel that the reviews of this film have been a little generous, but that's just my opinion. A shame really, could have been so much better. Expand

An amazing cast executing their roles spectacularly & some very good dialogue (in four languages!) which you'd expect from Tarantino.
Despite all this it just felt a bit lacking despite one or two very good scenes (The scene in the bar with German officers the standout).
Also, Christoph Walz reminded me of a Nazi Rob Brydon which took off his edge a little bit.

By God this is one of the best written characters in Tarantino's violent catalog next to Julius Winnfield in Pulp Fiction and the most threatening villains I've seen thanks to Christoph's brilliant acting. It reminds of movies by Sergio Leone with the music of Ennio Morricone. "Inglourious Basterds" is a bit long - at 2.5 hours not unlike its role models - but there are some truly amazing acting performances (deriving from an awesome script) that are worth sitting through in this epic. A recurring aspect of the movie is about how far you would go to either save your life or die for your values. The scenes dealing with decisions like these are not judge-able morally, for both options are morally bad (being partly responsible for someone's murder or being killed yourself). The question only is, what the lesser evil is for yourself. What is problematic about watching this movie (more often) is that it does desensitize one to genuine depictions of murder and cruelty.  Expand

I guess I only felt particularly invested in the film when Landa was on screen or when Shosanna's story was being unfolded. Christoph Waltz does a great job of bringing out the unnerving and cunning personality of Landa. Some intense close-ups of facial expressions and a suitable soundtrack raise the tension during Landa's interrogations. The acting and visuals in this remake are really something. Brad Pitt's performance is strangely funny in an otherwise very dark movie, with his odd, out-of-place extremely-strong Louisiana accent. The main villain is very well preformed character, and is everything a really evil villain should be. The plot is good at times, but feels very long and slow at many times. My biggest problem with this movie is the good guys; the Bastards. They are so brutal and merciless I couldn't like them, or even side with them while watching the movie. Killing the bad guy don't necessarily make you the good guy. Because of this personal problem, I give this movie a 7 instead of an 8. Expand

Here he reimagines the fate of Hitler, juggles separate but converging plotlines, uses German and French subtitles and creates a bloody revenge fantasy out of the Holocaust. Tarantino wanted to show retribution and so these scenes show a bunch of blood thirsty and barbaric Jews, making it kind of hard to sympathize with them at all. I'm not saying the Jews deserved what happened to them but in this movie, the Nazis were definitely tame in comparison to their enemies in terms of brutality. The other half of the movie revolves around a Jewish girl in hiding. I thought her scenes were quite good. The real star of this film is the no-name actor who plays the villain Hans Landa. Inglourious Basterds is a boiling pot of concepts. It has so many influences, it's almost impossible to list them all. The film is, in essence, a love letter to European cinema. This turns out to be the film's blessing and curse. Inglourious Basterds is a boiling pot of concepts. It has so many influences, it's almost impossible to list them all. The film is, in essence, a love letter to European cinema. This turns out to be the film's blessing and curse. Languid pacing, endless dialogue, brutal violence, odd camera choices, and out of era music don't add up to the eclectic sum that Tarantino had hoped for. There is some miscasting, such as Eli Roth as the "Bear Jew", who doesn't convey the menace that his role requires. However, Christoph Waltz is perfect as the clever and cruel Hans Landa. Brad Pitt does nicely as Aldo Raine, leader of the basterds. But in several instances, the all performers are weighed down by the amount of dialogue they must convey in however many languages. Ultimately, the film has too many personalities to know what it really wants to be. Expand

Entertaining and beautifully filmed but overrated. Christoph Waltz steals the show. One of Tarantino's weaker outings. Slightly confused and violence for the sake of it.

The previews that I saw showed smart/witty scenes that seemed funny, however, this movie is hardly a comedy. That said, I ultimately enjoyed the movie, the beginning was interesting, the middle seemed very long and at times boring but the ending made up for the dragging parts in the middle. There where a few light moments of comedy but mostly just alot of people dying throughout. Definetly worth seeing even with all of the subtitles (lots & lots of subtitles!) with a strong finish and a typical Tarantino style ending. Expand

Watching the first scene with Christoph Waltz in the Frenchman's farmhouse, I thought wow this is going to be good, but it just got progressively worse. There are some other gem scenes though. The last bit just seemed like he ran out of ideas and time. Overall it is worth seeing, but it could have been so much better. I was left disappointed. I was really surprised it was nominated for best picture, because I think there were better films. Expand

That said, a good chunk of Tarantino celebrating himself is a celebration of other movies, so that does help to ease down and enjoy what's here. Expand

Starts brilliantly but kinda descends from then as Tarantino seems incapable of self-restraint in his script.

Inglourious Basterds is a classic Tarantino film with its long dialogue and strong violence but this movie was way overdone and a little boring at times. Not bad but not his best.

The movie would be really good if I started watching it half way though. The beginning(while important) is just slow and mindless. I could not focus on it, but the ending and the acting were top notch.

This is not my favourite Tarantino movie. Directing here is not at his usual levels and everytime I watch it i feel like this is a movie that tries to be funny but it doesn't succeed in its intent.

whoopee, politically corrected Dirty Dozen redux via Pulp Fiction, with BP as Lee Marvin. myself, I preferred Lee Marvin.

Admittedly buzzes in parts but long and drawn out through the middle act. The opening scene holds much promise but subsequent scenes fail to build any tension. Characters are killed off before the audience has had any chance to invest interest in them. Waltz is good throughout however. Recut the movie twenty minutes shorter, and 80% less self-indulgent and this would be excellent. Expand

Ok, that must be one of the most average films I have witnessed in a long while. It was just stupid. Sorry there was nothing clever or witty or well written or directed in it was there? Sorry there was nothing clever or witty or well written or directed in it was there? Is it me or is this film just pointless? There was just nothing in it to makes one think "that was a good film". Someone please explain to me the point of taking real people (Hitler etc) and just completely changing history? Oh sorry is that the "clever" bit? The first 10-15 mins are good. Nicely acted, lit, written. Suspense and shocking even. Great start...Then it all goes down hill. Serious characters become a joke, Brad Pitt and the itallian accent, jesus christ... was that meant to be funny? Was just totally rubbish! You get to serious/exciting part of the film and you have him doing some stupid voice?... oh sorry is that the genius again?...then the story drags it's way to, I don't know, the most stupid film ending ever? I'm sure it makes Americans proud that they won the war like that? Or is that just me not understanding "a masterpiece"? If someone could point out the "really good bits" I'd be very greatful. Sorry very little to enjoy in this film, average at best please nobody try and tell me this is a good or even great film... think you need to remove your Tarantino rose coloured specs and see that when all said and done he's a bit of a one trick pony.
