This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nolan never to seems to explain the tech behind all this Dreamworld Extraction. It exists and audience is expected to move on and except this type of Corporate Espionage is possible.

Ok moving on the rules of the dream world and tactics to navigate around it are shown and also explained fairly simply. The main lead a wanted criminal undertakes the corporate mission of Inception (to plant an idea) so he can see his children again. So the initial immoral dilemma is overwritten by a desire to be reunited with his children more than anything else. This movie is very visually stylish and the core message seems to be careful what you wish for. Due to the nature of the subconscious and it’s self defence projections in this world. Which led me to believe his children are dead. The mother murdered them having lost a grip on reality due to Inception. He was a dream Architect and his last memory of his children and when they reunited is the same continued scene. Very much like Total Recall in what is reality and what is the fantasy. Personally I just think like Total Recall this main character is trapped in the fantasy.

Inception which boasts an a list stellar cast is a phenomenal story about thought, how it can be manipulated, form the foundation of who we are and is far from reliable. Dicaprio is stunning as the guilt ridden extractor who's as unstable as he is proficient or tom hardys charismatic con man who invites much needed comedy into the sci-fi epic. The script is concise, intelligent and truly in a league of its own in terms of ambitious complexity. The directing is as exceptional as you would expect from Christopher, focusing on right detailed shots, muted tones, melancholy piano heavy scores and ambitious endings. What I did find to be a flaw was how the action sequences in the peak of the film feel lackluster. Expand

Let's start with the good: This movie has excellent cinematography and special effects, and does well to use symbolism to connect to the audience on a deeper level.

However, plotwise the movie just doesn't make much sense. Why are the characters here, what are they trying to accomplish and why didn't they just do this in a less risky, less convoluted way? Coupled with a bunch of obnoxious, forgettable characters such as the stereotypical girl that constantly asks annoying questions pile needless, nonsensical and often contradictory exposition onto the viewer and it's a movie where I don't care about the characters nor the stakes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie sounds like a joke. "Bro, What if we made a movie, where you go in a dream that is in a dream that is in a dream in a dream and if you die in the dream, you go in a coma for 50 years and the only way to know if you are in a dream or not is to spin a little top toy." Unfortunately, the entirely world shatters the second Leo or literally any other character learns how to lucid dream. It's unnecessarily long and complicated for the sake of being complicated. The movie cannot go 5 minutes without a 10 minute long gun fight and the looping background ambiance does not do the movie any favors. Of course, the bombshell grand finale of the film leaves the entire thing up to beautiful *interpretation* to really make the movie feel deeper than it actually is. 4/10, would not dream again. Wait, is this all just a dream? Expand

The way in which the storyline is structured is very impressive and the casting has been carefully thought through which is something most blockbuster films have failed to accomplish in recent years. Page's performance as Ariadne is debatable but nothing worth 'over-ranting' about. The CGI in the movie is magnificent but isn't over done, making it very appropriate and entertaining when used. One thing is for certain and that is that Nolan has definitely brought the best out of the actors in Inception, particular Tom Hardy who plays the role of Eames near enough pitch perfect. With a combination of stars, effects, performances, action, strong narrative & superb direction, it's hard to pick out any major faults with Inception. A must, must see. Expand

And so I decided to check this movie out. And now I have literally no idea what he was smoking. This movie is a masterpiece even by Hollywood standards. It will continue to be known as an iconic movie for generations to come.

The story is based on Cobb, a thief who uses people's dreams to to learn about their secrets and then uses them to steal from them. Because of the movie's title I thought that the entire movie is taking place in a dream and when they are actually shown to go in a dream it is supposed to be an inception. It was only after I read about it on Wikipedia that I understood that the main movie is taking place outside of dreams.

Christopher Nolan did the absolute right thing by using practical effects instead of CGI. And it was also a pretty genius move to show your dreams that can actually happen in reality. Although many of the dreams shown in the movie look more like James bond films instead of actual dreams, I wouldn't just on that perspective since this is a subjective idea. Most probably many people have such kinds of dreams and they were the ones who were kept in mind when writing the story. But overall this was a great idea since the whole idea is that Cobb steals from the dreams of people and they would not realise that it is a dream only if it is made to be shown as realistic as possible.

The characters have also been explored very well. Cobb's wife used to be his partner in crime, but after a while she got so much addicted to the inception machine that she started thinking that the real life is also a dream and thus she committed suicide thinking that she will be able to meet cob in his real life. Cobb has been holding himself responsible for his wife's death and does wants a chance to correct his mistake. He has recruited a college student learning architecture and that provides a good way to give exposition without making it look either forced or confusing.

The only problem I had with this movie was the amount of talking that happens. In every scene there is talking, talking and even more talking, whether it is the the real world scenes or the dreamscapes. It was really boring to see them talk in a movie that is supposed to be about going into other people's dreams and stealing their knowledge and memories. The amount of exposition also seemed unnecessary and it felt like it was only meant to explain the people who are very slow to understand. But other than that I didn't have any problem.

Overall I would say that Inception is one of those movies which define the decade as well as the the potential of Christopher Nolan's storytelling. This movie is a perfect blend of looking legendary and having mostly used practical effects. I considered to be the best Christopher Nolan movie after The Dark Knight.

The movie's got a brilliant story and it's about this lad called Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) who steals important information from his targets, the way he does it is by entering their dreams and getting the main information he's after.

However, a lad who's called Saito (Ken Watanabe) offers to get rid of Cobb's complete criminal history record as a payment for performing an inception on his sick contender's son.

The movie's got some brilliant performance's from each character throughout this movie, especially from Leonardo DiCaprio. I thought he gave one of his greatest performances throughout this movie, he shows his emotions really well and he plays the role of the main character so good.

The dialogue which is given from each character throughout this movie is very strong, while non of the dialogue which is given or received feels weak in any sort of way.

Also, the humour which is scattered throughout this movie works really well and it always hits and it never misses in making me laugh in some sort of way.

The pacing throughout this movie is all honestly great, all of the build ups to certain scenes which end up happening throughout this movie are all built up very well.

The movie's even got some very beautiful visual effects, which actually hold up very well due to this movie coming out in 2010 and they don't look very dated at all, which I think is another positive for this movie.

Finally, the movie's cinematography which was done by Wally Pfister is honestly so beautiful, he did such a great job on capturing the moments so well and making them look so great. I'm so happy that he got quite a few awards for the best cinematography in 2010, he honestly deserves them he did such a great job.

The action sequences which end up happening throughout this movie, either it being in the real world or the dream world are all very well done and they're also very cleverly done, which I thought was really good.

The score which was composed by Hans Zimmer is honestly really well done and I think he did such a great job on composing the full soundtrack for this movie.

Overall, Inception is a brilliant movie and it's honestly a masterpiece and a half. The movie's got a brilliant story, brilliant performances, strong dialogue, great humour, great pacing, beautiful visual effects, beautiful cinematography, very clever action sequences and a great score which was composed by the man, the myth and the legend Hans Zimmer.

This movie is honestly worth the watch, I'd recommend everyone to watch this, you'll probably enjoy it quite a bit.

Perfect movie with the best actors. Positive things I see are mainly - effects, actions, music and - the most important - deepness of plot and story.

This movie is pure exposition, especially the first act. Once the mission starts it gets a bit better, but unfortunately the exposition never stops, and the characters delivering it are honestly not all that interesting.

I also hate how it justifies all the exposition. They literally get rid of a character that knows all the rules and replace him with someone who knows nothing, all so they can explain the rules to her / us. That's the only reason Ellen Page's charcter is in the movie. It feels very lazy.

This is a major flaw in almost all Nolan movies. The characters feel like tools to explain the story and perform the plot rather than real people.

It mostly makes up for this with its concept and structure (aside from the purely expository first act), but even then, it doesn't go as far as it could. For a movie set inside dreams, there was so much potential for surrealism, but Nolan limits himself to rather mindane things like a train in a street, or an avalanche.
The wildest thing is the spinning/zero-gravity hallway, but I kinda would have prefered if it had presented it as an actual spinning hallway by actually keeping the camera static so we see the rotation (like that one still sugests the scene is like). While we get some shots that look like that, it's mostly just poeple flying around and fighting on the walls, which while still impressive, has been done many times.

It also never pays off a lot of its setups.
The whole folding city thing is never done in the actual mission despite being set up in the planning stage. The Penrose stairs are done again, but the effect is not repeated, so it's kinda hard to tell what's happening. The only reason I know it was the penrose thing again it's because Arthur said "paradox" again.

Still, despite all my criticims of this film (many of which apply to most Nolan movies), I think that this movie is very entertaining to watch thanks to it's structure, editing (between the dream layers. For some reason simple conversation scenes are very weirdly edited), music and ending.

It's good. I really like it, but definitely very overrated. Also, not anywhere near ass confusing as many claim (I wish it was more confusing). It's the most Nolanesque Nolan film, for better and for worse.

Lets start at the beginning. On the surfaceA true masterpiece and I am agreeing with others singing its praise except for the ending. While other will praise it I will say it is an easy way out. It is brilliant attempt but still a cover up. Lets start at the beginning. On the surface it is about extraction of informations from the mind of unaware people by virtually entering their minds or subconscious and can be compared to a fantasy spy movie. Under the surface it is about the concept of thoughts, dreams, psychology, reality, perception and the characters own baggage. It is a unique set up and a clever written story. There is a lot to analyse and discus about this movie and themes. Then there are the actors. Leonardo diCaprio is excellent as always. He is like Morgan Freeman. There is no bad movie with him and he should have far more Oscars. The rest of the cast delivered also a praiseworthy performance. Be it Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the others. One of the best overall performances of the year and maybe even in the top 10 of the decade. But I have also to talk about the visual style. It is unique with maybe Dr. Strange coming close to it. It is breathtaking to watch and carefully made. Its originality is truly remarkable. Like I already said this is a masterpiece and easily a 10/10 for me except the ending. I wont spoil it. I view this as easy way out that is one of the best masquerades in movie history. It sells you this idea and it nearly tricked me into believing its brilliance. If you look behind this it is just an easy way out and maybe cowardly. I know that this is debatable and also maybe an unjust rating. I really liked the movie and want to give a 10/10 instead of the ending as everything else fells uneasy for me. I however subtract 1 point because of this and still appreciate this movie as timeless masterpieces. There is no rule against it so it is valid. Expand

Ariadne: "Why is it so important to dream?"

Cobb: "Because, in my dreams we are together."

I haven't seen this movie in years, but after re-watching it struck me hard how depressing this was.

Putting aside the action sequences and loud music and a complicate plot, there's a beautiful story about a man trying to get back to his children, without it being cheesy. Well if you really break this movie at it's core, it's about two grieving men (Leo and Murphy), both haunted by the past until they have the strength to accept reality and let them go.

The 'Grow Old Together' scene stuck with me the most.

You can say whatever you want about Christopher Nolan, but his movies are never hollow. I'm also convince that Nolan would be the perfect choice to direct a James Bond movie.

Seriously, throughout the whole movie I was thinking "Man imagine the genius behind Inception directing a Bond movie". The ingredients are right there.

The whole idea and concept of dreaming being made into a movie with multiple layers. It doesn't always tells you what the movie means, leaving the audience to think for themselves about what was meant in that scene. The movie is full of unpredictable twists, taking science fiction to the next level, taking a little thing as dreaming and turning it into a theory and concept. Nolan picked a great cast for the movie (Leonardo DiCaprio, Cillian Murphy) which is one of the foundations of the greatness of this movie along with the script and Nolan's cinematography, great use of CGI and the idea of dreaming. Despite it being science fiction, the movie isn't overly exaggerated as it could've been and tries to be as realistic as possible whilst keeping the audience engaged and having the right amount of action. Also not to forget to mention the music composed by Hans Zimmer which is absolutely amazing and made for one of the best endings to a movie in my opinion. The ending got people talking for a long time debating if Cobb is back to reality or if he's still in a dream and that is when you know the movie was done right. Expand

All the over-the-top images; more like a painting, are justified by reasoning, science and a little bit of imagination.

Inception

Nolan is a filmmaker to be afraid of. What P.T. Anderson did for straight three hours in Magnolia, you are going to have that same exhausting experience in this visual galore. Inception deals with a metaphor heist commanded by an expert extractor named Cobb whose only dream is to go home. Away from the action and the skills he masters at, and in order to reach home, he goes through the final test by embracing and learning the first thought entering his mind.

I remember I was ahead of Nolan- or so I thought. I claimed to know his method of decoding a subject and then he coded this cinematic marvel in front of me. So here's how he goes through a script. He treats them like a sketch show. Simple as that. And just like in a sketch show there are plenty of sketches- duh!- surfing around it. Now, a sketch is actually a double edged sword. In the sense that it needs a start, a middle act and a final act, in every three minutes. And once you get over it- which is usually engaging for its compactness- you have to come up with an entire new idea. But this is why it favours majorly on Nolan's side. Since, he has to deal with the same world, he creates, celebrates and destroys the world in each act that also contributes to the bigger picture completing the circle and leaving us satisfied. Another thing to note here is, how he celebrates. In an "action" espionage thriller, you would expect some punches and bullets and explosives. But the way he celebrates- or in layman terms exaggerate or gloats- is by envisioning his germ of the idea on different set pieces and locations. Ergo, his action is never your typical luxurious action. Just watch Joseph Gorden Lewitt surviving on that hotel without or under influenced gravity.

Science over emotions. Yes, I think as much as brilliant the subconscious play and the contingent unknown backup plans work on the film, I found myself cheated on the emotional background that our protagonist Cobb, played remorsefully by Leonardo DiCaprio, goes through. Don't get me wrong, the back story is incredibly rich, it's just the way it is treated. It is like after every- thrice to be precise- major event, Ellen Page and DiCaprio are told to reveal little by little information about the past in order to manipulate us. But this is just a minor flaw in this Nolan's masterpiece that not only subjugates but even belittles writers like us.
