As a long time horror fanatic I have seen it all and thought there was very little left in the genre that could shock me to my core; Ari Aster's debut left me not only shocked but inspired. From the get-go Hereditary is a symphony of twisted camera work, implicitly dark tone, and magnetic performances that were eerily relatable. As the film went on these components hurl the viewer into web of paranoia strung together by an antagonist that has no physical presence in the movie but is made more real by the confounding series of events. I was struggling to sit still in my seat. I genuinely felt my own sense of panic succumb to the cascade of macabre imagery and heavy thematic dialogue. The films denouement is nothing sort of devastating and embodies the very definition of tragedy; haunting you long after the credits stop rolling and leaving you horrified. On all elements this film is nothing short of a masterpiece; framing, tone, lighting, acting, story, editing, soundtrack... all of it assembled with such grace and love that it deserves a place among those classics that kept us awake at night. A+ work Ari can't wait for your next picture. Expand

As someone who loved The Babadook and The Witch, this film was excellent. What I love the most is what others have already said: this film relied more on tension, sound, and imagery to give you that feeling of dread and it did it perfectly. I was not ready for some of the things shown in this film. Sometimes I had to do a double take to make sure I was seeing what I was seeing and some of these scenes will stay with me for a long time. It felt like I was watching something I shouldn't be seeing, and yet I wanted to find out what happens next. Toni Collette's performance was fantastic and so well acted. This film exceeded my expectations and was so refreshing. I would definitely see it again. Expand

Now, a director with no experience and the fact that he do a movie that is taken as this generation "The Exorcist", means that Aster is going to be one of the best directors of this century. The movie is scary, but not scary as we are used to. It has no jump scares and it has a long time to describe the pain that the family in the movie is going through. I don´t know if this was the intention of the director, but Hereditary makes your blood cold using all that you think you know about a scary movie against you; you never know what is going to happen and if you´re into the movie it´s kind of a torture because you will never look away because they are certain details that you´re going to be interest in and those details will also make you doubt about what is going to happen. A lot of people are not going to like this movie because it is not a "normal" or "generic" horror movie, but the people that love to have surprises in movies and love to be challenged in movies, will love this one. Toni Collette gives the best performance of her career, she has to do a lot of things in the movie, some things really scary and heartbreaking that you just think, "how did she do it? Also Nat Wolff was really good, his character is in pain almost the entire movie, and he knows exactly how to control certain emotions so that it doesn't´t get over the top in some scenes. This is not a perfect movie; one of the issues that I have is that in the middle of the movie, there are a few moments where I was wondering where the movie was going but not in the good way, I thought that the movie was just stuck, but there was only like ten minutes of it, and also I would love more ambiguity in the movie, it´s not that the things that they give away to the audience were bad, just that the way that they did in the last ten minutes of the movie were given literally, and I would love that the movie would give the audience the chance of discover some things by our own. In the end, Hereditary is a really good movie, one of the best horror movies in recent memory, a movie that you will not forget after you got to sleep, a movie that you will talk about for a long time. This is not a scary film. It is a dreadful film in the full sense of the word. You are more disturbed and on edge hours after the film has ended then while watching (Ok until the third act)

This is because at first viewing it is not entirely clear what you just watched. Then you put the puzzle pieces together just like Annie building one of her dioramas. When the scales fall from your eyes and the enormity of the evil - real lust for power - at the cost of all, that you really see what just happened.

This is a supernatural melodrama and both ends of the rope burn ever so slowly but with extreme intensity.

Aster has made as assured debut as you can as both writer and director. This is no pastiche as he charts an extremely particular vision. Aster makes the house, the lighting, the camera - malevolent bystanders to the growing comprehension of horror. Think about how many horror films you see where you actually don't care who gets killed or not. This is the antithesis of that.

How is this a cast for your first film - Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne and Ann Dowd..and they are stood up by the incredible children. The haunting debutante Milly Shapiro and the star in waiting Alex Wolff.

The real horror of Hereditary is that you could remove all the supernatural content and it would still be extremely disturbing.

This is how horror is supposed to be done. The most impressive part of this movie is the fact that there were literally zero jump scares. It is all a slow but terrifying build up to what can ultimately be described as a demented ending. First off, the acting on the part of everyone is outstanding, especially Toni Collette. The story is very well done, but at times you can get lost in what exactly is going on and I felt they could have done a better job explaining at times. Much of the film's emotional duress comes from the drama within the family, which adds another layer to the depth and terror. I've seen some negative reviews from people saying that the movie took a bad, unexpected turn or something in the last 20 minutes, but I disagree. There are multiple hints at what is truly going on throughout the film if you pay attention, so the end shouldn't come as a surprise. The cinematography was outstanding, and I think they hit the perfect atmosphere throughout the film. They straddle the line between "really demented" and "just messed up" perfectly throughout the movie. This is the first horror film I've seen in a very long time that made me lose sleep. Despite me rating it an 8, this movie definitely isn't for everyone. Some will find it to be too much, and they aren't completely wrong to do so. To me it was outstanding, and would recommend to any moviegoer who is up for the emotional torment Hereditary has to offer. Expand

After enduring all of the mediocre, anything-but-unsettling films of the 2000's, we finally get year after year of intriguing, unique, and genuinely thrilling horror productions. A24 should take a large portion of the credit after producing The Witch, It Comes At Night, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and now Hereditary, which is possibly their strongest installment yet. While audiences will still have to endure commercials for quickly forgotten horror duds like Truth or Dare, they can find solace in this strong 2018 terror.

Hereditary follows a family living in somewhat isolation in the Rocky Mountains whose grandmother figure has just passed away. No one is sad. In fact, Annie (played by Toni Collette) seeks out grief counseling in order to understand her lack of sorrow for her mother's passing. Annie then reveals details of her troubled upbringing and troubles with her mother, making the audience realize that grandma's passing may be for the better. Annie also reveals her family's struggles with mental illness, illness that ultimately caused her brother to take his own life at the age of 16. Though Annie does not directly say it, she seems to have a burden lifted off of her in her mother's passing. The only person distraught over her death is Charlie, Annie's troubled daughter. Charlie and her grandmother were quite close, and Charlie is struggling to understand who will show her love the way her grandmother did. This film quickly devolves into madness, not unlike Eraserhead and The Shining; I often thought of Wendy running around the Overlook Hotel. Mental illness clearly plays a role in character actions and decisions, but so does the supernatural. The most interesting aspect of Hereditary (other than some fascinating camera work and set pieces) is its ability to blur clearly supernatural events and a reality altered by mental illness. Are the images that plague the family real events, or are they simply hallucinations? The answer is not clear. What is clear is that this family is about to go through some hardships, and grandma is to blame in one form or another. The film is genuinely terrifying, unpredictable, and filled with enough mystery and suspense to thrill the audience for a full two hours. Hereditary also adds an artistic touch to its brand of horror, which may polarize audiences but will certainly lead to some great discussion points.

By no means is Hereditary a "perfect" film. It plods a bit in early scenes. Some shots move quickly from terror to unintentional terror. Not all character motivations are entirely clear. No viewer should watch the film expecting perfection; the viewer, however, can expect two hours of tense, brilliantly crafted horror entertainment. Hereditary is a rare great film that ultimately more than makes up for its minor issues by keeping the audience guessing from scene to scene while conjuring up some of the most thrilling images and situations that the horror genre has seen in a long time.

It doesn't rely on jump scares at all, and actually the first half (maybe even closer to two-thirds) of the film plays out more as a drama film than a horror film. The horror aspect slowly builds, and builds, and builds, and then it's released in a way similar to how a thriller would release all of the suspense that has been built up over time. This film invokes a feeling of eeriness. I never found myself to be scared or ready to jump out of my seat, instead I found myself feeling creeped out at times. And, honestly, I much prefer it that way. The story is enthralling in a way that I didn't expect. As you might expect, it is very family centric. It's a slow burn, but I felt an urgency to find out all of the answers and as a result it seemed like the first 100 minutes of this film flew by. And the last 25 minutes or so, my goodness...they were exactly what I was hoping for.

Overall: Hereditary is a great arthouse horror film. Don't go into it expecting to be scared to death, but be prepared to feel a little creeped out.

The poster for some reason invoked a really dark and gritty slow burning vibe, and while it's certainly got some very dark moments I was surprised by how quickly it kicked into high gear and didn't let up in terms of shock, tension and horror. It's delightfully wicked; a rollercoaster of demented psychological thrills. Despite some garishly violent images in places the majority of the horror stems from the threat of violence rather than the enactment of it. I found it delightfully wicked in that respect; it was almost toying with the audience with threats of continued sadism and when you don't get the release (a typical build up leading to a death followed by a breather period) a deeper unease sets in and for me that's extremely hard to sustain but they achieved that spectacularly. As a lifelong horror fan who rarely enjoys horror films, Hereditary was able to do what I thought horror films no longer could, horrify me. Yeh, there are plenty of films that can make me jump, or creepy orchestral groans that will get my hair raised, but these effects aren't the result of legitimate horror so much as being conned by a well tuned parlor trick. Hereditary is different. First of all, it is a great film. The direction, cinematography, sound design and acting are all stellar throughout. Many of the film's stand out moments are in its quietest, least menacing scenes. But those aren't the scenes that will stick with you. Hereditary isn't just a popcorn jump scare flick. It will chill you to your bone, haunt your dreams, and lay dormant as a menacing memory months or years after viewing it. Also, Toni Collette was born for this role, and it's worth watching for her scream-acting alone. Hereditary is an instant classic in the realm of 'higher horror'. Hereditary is a masterwork of the genre that brings back hope for weird heady entertainment that will haunt you for a lifetime. Enjoy, and prepare to get **** up in the best ways possible. Expand

This is an expertly crafted and masterfully produced film with a slew of A-tier performances and a truly horrifying feel to it. It provokes the kind of mood that's so powerful, you'd end up violating some kind of U.N. bylaw if you tried bottling it. And though it's not necessarily my cup of tea, I cannot deny the intrinsic talent behind the filmmaker at hand here. It's not the scariest, but its eeriness made my skin crawl and some scenes even got a whole obnoxious gasp out of me. The simplest way to describe Hereditary would be that its an imperfect blend of The Babadook and The VVitch. That's where the film has a few major flaws. In its identity, as the horror aspect of Hereditary is truly disturbing the drama does drag on quite a bit (leading to pacing issues) and is at odds with the storytelling - causing an incohesive narrative (lastly the final gripe of mine was the uneven lighting). That said, Hereditary will go down as a classic in the horror genre with its jawdropping final act that truly channeled The Exorcist. The acting is absolutely brilliant all around (Collette is amazing as always, the one who surprised me the most was Alex Wolff, he was fantastic) and for his first feature Ari Aster did a phenomenal job. Some reviews mention "The Exorcist" but its "heredity" is closer to "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Sentinel". The superb Toni Collette delivers an intense performance and stretches of the film thoughtfully tangle with how grief impacts a family and the following silence of unspoken anger and regret. But the film also puts itself at a disadvantage early on by being completely mirthless and also rendering a central tragedy before the halfway mark. The family stakes are somewhat reduced after that point. Ultimately, the film just trades on some previous horror/paranoia tropes which then push the plot to a not un-entirely surprising conclusion. If you like psychological horror, arthouse horror, or thrillers with elements of horror, then Hereditary is the film for you. The direction and cinematography are painstakingly beautiful, and the shots truly drive the story. The acting performances are incredible as well, with Toni Collette and Alex Wolff really shining. Ann Dowd is a treat as always, and Milly Shapiro and Gabriel Byrne are also a delight to watch. The weakest point of Hereditary however, is it's script. While 70% of it is really well written and well done, some scenes and some lines of dialogue will leave you scratching your head. The rules of this horror world are really not set down, and some scenes take place in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, and others in the desert, and others in the midwest. I'm not sure if this was purposeful or not, but it would be nice for a few more clues. The sound design mostly sticks to cliches, unfortunately, but there are one or two moments of perfect horror sound design. There is also not one jumpscare in this movie, which is a real pleasure, and the tension building is incredibly fun. All in all, this is definitely worth a watch or two! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think the movie loses its essence in the third act, by trying to overexplain the plot and mythology and by focusing more on narrative than on the utter agonizing atmosphere it was building. The frustration caused by that ending is just amplified by the fact that everything was being done so amazingly well. Expand

To enormous surprise, he created a strong cinematic mission statement supporting the misguided yet unforgettable spiritual social order of Hereditary. What’s the mission statement exactly? Well, let’s see:

He first sets up a dad, a mom, a boy, and a girl residing in a large wood house by a forest. The perspective taken here is through the matriarch, Annie, who has no choice but to watch her family pay themselves to the unknown haunts that beckon them. Hereditary’s power stems off how it takes its time to display a demand for us to accept family angst, staged through the nearly nonexistent lights above a conflicted dinner.

Everything else within Aster’s deconstruction of America’s nuclear home, especially the flickering image itself, appears top notch. Hereditary’s sound design helps transition between loud and quiet moments until you’d rather slice your own ears off than listen any further to the film’s satanic taunts. Harsh noise frequencies give a constant heavy pulse, scary paranoia established through a slow camera pan across art supplies that segues into the first scene. Rather than familiar instruments, a deep bassoon blares at a steady frequency below our ears’ capacity, supposedly mixed by demons to make your heartbeat race along to the score’s dark rhythm.

Hereditary‘s performances also triumph: Toni Collette (Annie) draws the peak of her career, her ritualistic eyes offering gradual grief until her disturbed desperate voice delivers a killer monologue. Likewise, Milly Shapiro’s (Charlie, the thirteen-year-old daughter) tongue clicks freaks you out more than The Omen. Hard to believe Milly previously played Matilda on Broadway!

Between these “humans“ trying to act human, the persuasively paced cast enhance Hereditary’s mindset on why people become a harmful investment, the slow camera pans drawing attention forward to the individuals’ shared disconnect.
Don’t think too highly of this attack on innocence though. A little fair notice for anyone falling under Hereditary’s most likely demographic of young adults: odds are you may receive the wrong positive ideas, particularly contemplation toward a glamorized a psychic medium career. Just wanted to make full disclosure before discussing the flick’s real meat.

Hereditary demonstrates self-blame condemnation, as Annie admits unidentifiable accusation of herself, a mysterious grief she paints through creating miniature models of familiarity. She sleeps inside the heated tree house to grieve, much like how Charlie sleeps inside the attic… which communicates her dangerously deceptive familial distance. Then Annie repeatedly tells her husband she plans to go see a movie when she actually attends a grief circle. Beyond her own lies: the teenage son, Peter, a bong smoker, has numerous life secrets he carries outside. Yes, everyone lies about their plans... except Charlie.

She seems better off at living than Peter, who constantly freaks out around his classmates to unholy extent. While these details of the family’s low points get shown, Hereditary takes its time to let you process the shock, each emotional beat exploiting fears of walking through dark empty hallways after peering around the room from underneath bedsheets. Eventually, following off the disturbed visual of an ant-eaten severed head, a scary cultic ritual brings all loose ends together.

…yeah. Based off my previous experience, such imagery honestly damages your moral senses to watch. The finale reminded me of my time watching Avengers: Infinity War. Throughout most of the film I thought, “Wow! I’m liking this writing!” But once the credits rolled, I thought, “Eh, never mind.” Except unlike Infinity War, which just gave an unexpected discouraging ending, Hereditary made me feel like the film less because being a Christian, its bleak, pointless pro-Satanism message upset me.

Hence why I had a peaceful night’s sleep immediately afterward—my inner vulnerability was unscathed. I believe The Silence of the Lambs benefits greater to watch since it proposes realistic solutions for our shared terror, unlike how Hereditary foolishly says sin triumphs without even saying what triumphs over sin.

We fleshly organisms might better off seize to have ears anymore… or eyes, or a nose, or a mouth, or hair, or cheeks, or a chin, or a neck, or any of the skull’s added pieces. Hereditary commands us to ultimately submit ourselves beneath whatever outdoes our control. The question remains: Will you obey Ari Aster’s smooth-talking against your supposed insignificance?

This film is dreadful to watch, and I mean that in the best way. There's not a moment where this film lets you breathe easily, there's always something on-screen that keeps you alert.

The most chilling part (without getting into spoilers) is a scene involving a telephone pole, and the aftermath of that moment. It's so perfectly acted, written, and directed, that when it cuts to our first shot with ants, the image and the sounds in the background are so horrifying to think about that it had me crying in the theater.

Everything in this film works for me. Even the ending, which I'm surprised has polarized so many people. If you pay attention to what's being said by the characters, you should be able to pick it up like I did.

Could have been better: the supernatural element could have been a bit more subtle (there is one short scene where it almost made me laugh), but overal, the movie deserves an 7.5/10 for a horror film. So Hereditary has received the same reaction that films like It Comes At Night and The Witch received from the so-called "mainstream audience".
It was to be expected and it doesn't surprise me in the least.

But it does have reaffirmed to me something that I've been considering for quite some time now and it's that these mainstream audiences believe that horror means mutilated bodies, gallons of blood and multiple jump scares.

Let's be honest it isn't for nothing that a franchise like Saw had so many sequels. It was practically porn gore but it leaves in evidence another interesting aspect of those audiences. They like to watch people die at a safe distance and especially knowing that nothing happened once they leave the movie theater.

Hereditary is indeed a horror film, but it's not a frontal horror film. Hereditary bases almost all its argument on the power of suggestion. What is hidden in the dark is there to stalk and torment you not to jump and kill you immediately.

Although the plot is nothing special and in the final part it gets lost a bit, the truth is that the film is pretty solid.

This film belongs entirely to Toni Collette because she's really good, intense and dark and she also carries pretty much the whole narrative. Some people talk about Alex Wolff's performance but I found him too frustranting and dumb.

The young Milly Shapiro makes her film debut and while she ends up playing a small role, she's disturbing enough to leave a big impression on you.

The truth is that I did enjoyed Hereditary. I don't think it's a horror masterpiece but I think it's one of the best bets that has come in years of a genre that is in terrible conditions.

In the end all verdicts or opinions will probably depend a lot of people expectations of what they wanted to see or what horror is to them but I've gotta say that if you get disappointed, is perfectly fine but as I've always said judge the film for what it is and not for what you expected it to be.

I can appreciate the good production values and some great acting, especially Toni Collette who should get an Academy Award nom for her effort. In fact, her unraveling recalls Shelley Duvall's performance in "The Shining". And there was the unsettlingly weird look of newcomer Milly Shapiro who I thought was the little girl in "Les Miserables" but no. This film was more a study of the descent into madness/psychosis that was colored with horror. It wasn't a horror genre film like Friday the 13th, Halloween, etc. But because it's a story about madness some of the scenes are difficult to understand and to determine if they're "real" or part of the character's madness. I'm a dude and not easily scared or intimidated so this film rather than scaring me was just more unsettling and disturbing, it left me in a bad mood, especially with the very odd, weird, again unsettling final scene. It was good for what it is, but I don't like what it is so I guess that rates a "6", very hard to rate. Expand

Or perhaps Hereditary is 'art-house horror' - for people who can't stomach films as disturbing as The Descent or as discomforting as The Witch. The ending was the most disappointing thing about Hereditary, after an ultra slow-burn build-up that hinted at a terrifying conclusion, instead we were given a curious sort of 1970s gothic horror-lite scene that managed to be somehow completely unshocking despite the presence of kneeling headless corpses. I couldn't recommend Hereditary to anyone, unless you are a film school student interested more in style than substance, or unless you can only stand moderate scares. And forget what the posters say, this isn't in the same league as The Exorcist. Expand

Those who hate the movie can't understand why anyone would like it, and those impacted feel the negative reviewers watched an entirely different movie.

As I fall in the latter group, I would like to respectfully inform the detractors that there is a truly disturbing element to this movie for some of us and it's hard not to be impressed when it hits you. So much so that you're willing to overlook the plot holes. And while those plot blunders do ruin the last 10-15 min of this movie, it's hard to ignore the emotional *affect* of the entire film's pace and acting.

Either way, just know that you might hear "Laurel" or "Yanny" when you watch this movie. One is good while the other apparently sucks ¯_(ツ)_/¯

God Save Ari Aster!

It's all true. Ari Aster's psychologically brutal and unnerving directorial debut is a supernatural film feat conjured up by a convincing perspective that extracts from spiritism, demonology and necromancy a sufficiently disturbing mythology to perturb your mind with one of the best developed indie horror films of the new century, there are visual and storytelling magic. It's insufficient to say that it gets under your skin as soon as the credits roll, leaving a bad omen and unusual insecurity today in films that only will get away with a sinister tongue-clicking noise. The darkest perversity lurks behind familiar faces.

Little known among the mainstream audiovisual world, Aster - New York, 1987 - began to carve out a niche for himself in the field with his meaningful and bizarre short films ("The Strange Thing About The Johnsons"), those that were enough inducements for production company A24 to grant its support to make possible his outstanding, scary debut into the world of celluloid. Credited as the single director and screenwriter - a strangely uncommon guarantee bearing in mind the unbelievable fruits, - this American filmmaker, an absolute new prey for the major studios, consolidates his idea and career with overwhelming solvency, exquisite certainty and necessary tranquility to freak us out; the control he has over the cinematographic tools he possesses is masterful, it's perceptible with every strange, purposeful scene in which the command of camera, script and actors become cardinal handholds to confer tremendous impact on a darkly penetrating family tragedy seen from the outside, but with a sharper review lies an inquisitive and traumatizing story of loss, forgiveness, sanity, family, union and, best of all, human and inhuman demons. The film, as a whole, is a frightening and constantly shocking experience, however, being objective and selective, there are about five sequences simply rewarding, frame after frame with a pace and a surprise factor pathetically horrific that leaves you with your mouth wide open for more than an entire minute, you certainly don't understand why that just happened, but once you're sufficiently related to the characters and the mythology, this fantastic state of shock makes sense. In said sequences, the great affection and respect to the big, seldom-remembered horror classics through narrative executions are noticeable, however, "Annabelle: Creation" came to my mind at the time when we all literally lose our heads; Edward Shults' psychological horror thriller also got reminiscences obviously; "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" in its natural ability to disturb in no time at all or Robert Eggers' incredible unsettling debut with "The VVitch: a New-England Folktale," and there are a lot of similarities in there. That ending, that ending is as mind-boggling and irrationally powerful as firs-timer Eggers's. An insane, schizophrenic third act prepares the ground for a monumental conclusion, one neatly written, astonishing and exciting splashing drops of horror situation after another. The tension is visceral and well-built, it makes you uncomfortable even when apparently nothing happens on screen; that ending is, without stock, one of the best in a real horror film since 2016. Drawing on grimoires to a tragedy plot is a tricky task and whoever wants to set a film on it should be sufficiently prepared and aware that it must deliver a coherent, cohesive and juicy story, faithful to the difficult supporting material and the hopes of the most loyal moviegoers. It's not hyperbole: Toni Collette does deserve an Oscar; if you need proof, just buy a movie ticket, if you need proof, pay special attention to that magnanimous monologue in the grief support group or that "usual" family discussion at the table. Conquering with the most risky and sinister role of her career, "Krampus" actress delivers one of the best distressed-mother performances of all time, as well as a terrifying interpretation in relation to the nuances and demands of the character, there are dramatic peaks that the Oscar-nominated actress reaches with incredible ease, out-of-rational-control scenes in which this talented woman overflows pure talent. No doubt, "Hereditary" by Ari Aster is one of the films of the year due to first-class performances - even bandying about a would-be Academy Award or Golden Globe nomination, - a superb direction for a horror film and a slow-burning story of demons, dark secrets and legacies, a movie with a schizophrenic and psychologically effective pace that advances at full speed under the surface as a bone-crushing beast, willing to damage our dreams, and it has made it. Viscerally unpredictable, visually terrifying and well developed, Ari Aster is this year's Robert Eggers owing to one of the most beautifully unsettling films of the year and the decade.

So you are asking: jump-scares, horrifying monsters, or even worse, does 'Dirty Grandpa' start to play all of a sudden? No. This film burrows deep in your mind and soul and it fills you with a sustained level of absolute despair.

Director/screenwriter Ari Aster has no mercy for the family whose matriarch has recently passed away. Yet, he insists that this is not a horror film. And in the classic sense of the word, it is not. But in the true sense, it is. There are, of course, the classic visual scary scenes and clever frame-playing and even a good amount of decapitated bodies, but the way in which this film channels its occult ideas and secrets and puts you right into the middle of this family, almost as if you were a member, makes you share their suffering. And what a terrible suffering it is. It is not only the amount of emotions, but also their weight.

Annie (Toni Collette) is a miniature design artist. Her husband, Steve (Gabriel Byrne) is a rational man. He is the typical middle-aged upper-class American. Annie is very susceptible to the occult. After losing multiple family members, most of them due to mental illnesses, she slowly descends into either madness, or startled realization of the realness of spiritualism. Collette's performance is maddening. She completely steals the show as every scream and facial tremble is delivered with horrifying thoroughness.

There are articles trying to explain 'Hereditary', especially the terrifying ending, some saying that everything is a metaphor for mental decay as a result of tragedy. But the horrifying supernatural elements are way to real and to deep to be that. It shouldn't be that. It is, though, one of the best films of the year.

What you have here is a thriller of spectacular proportions. The acting, writing, and directing is all spectacular, and while this isn't a thriller or horror movie in mainstream terms, it still deserves to be watched as a unique and thrilling experience. Ari Aster is the bread and butter of Hereditary, writing and directing scenes of pure horror and mystery in ways that pleased me. Toni Collette speaks for herself...I mean, she's Toni Collette, she's great in everything she's in. Newcomer Milly Shapiro is...is...just great. Her performance is unsettling and just great. Even Alex Wolff, FROM THE NAKED BROTHERS BAND (CRAZY CAR FOR LIFE) is, too, pretty good. Everyone here was pretty good, not a single dull performance in my opinion. The cinematography and music also compliments the movie as well, but it is a slow burn at times and is a lot different from what horror can usually be, so this might be like a fine wine--an acquired taste, so while I may have enjoyed it, it might not be right for you personally. But that being said, it does have rewatchability as there are certain things that you see a second time that don't hit you the first time. So I'm forced to watch it, then watch it again. Expand

Just when I thought it is going to be another 'predictable' jump scare ridden movie, this film outclasses other horror movies by having close to no jump scare at all, and manages to shine in every aspect of what an excellent all rounded movie should be, where most other films of the same genre fail miserably so many times. It replaces tiresome jump scare with intense emotional tension and well conjured creepy atmosphere throughout the film.

What stands out is this film focuses more on well crafted, intricate storylines and superb characters development than the horror aspect, which ironically makes this a great horror movie. The emotional tension between the characters in the film is really intense, built up from the start at the right pace along with amazing plots and surprising twists, up til towards the end (except the ending part which I dislike a lot). The acting of the main characters is top class, bringing out what this film has to offer in the most satisfying way ever, as far as great movies are concerned. I would have given this film a '9' if not for the ending.

Go watch this, and get the Blu ray version as well!

Hereditary

3 And A Half Out Of 5

Hereditary is a character driven horror feature that believes to feed the audience more of the family drama and the mystery behind it, than mere compilation of horrifying visual effects. The crucial critical environment that is depicted in here chills down the spine among the viewers for the stakes are always black and white; never had you ever cared for the characters like such. Another primary reason why it communicates with such length is the uncertainty of the script, that allows it to go bold, gut-wrenching and flow as a lethal sea wave which when hits on screen leaves the audience with a long horrific gasp. It is rich on technical aspects like cinematography, stunning sound effects and perfect editing. The camera work is plausible, it is shot beautifully and appropriately with some cringe worthy visuals that will easily give you nightmares. The political drama among the family members, its three dimensional perspective and Toni Collette are the high points of the feature that elevates the thrilling ride it has to offer.

The writing is sharp, explicit and smarter than it seems for it manages to attain the perfect balance of drama and horror as they are dependent on each other and is impossible to filter out. It isn't one's cheesy horror flick as the ludicrosity isn't encouraged and instead focuses to manipulate the viewers with their imagination. Ari Aster; the writer-director, has done a tremendous job on creating such a tensed environment among the characters, especially since it is his directorial debut for a major motion picture. The performance is convincing among the cast but the obvious standoff; as mentioned earlier, is Toni Collette who is breathtaking in her portrayal. Hereditary is a typical and sensible homage to the genre, for among the latest light-headed attention-grabber popcorn flicks, it is refreshing to listen to someone that speaks volume; the prodigal son returns.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are a ton of good things I could say about this movie: Great acting, a great cinematic work, crazy sound effects and I went through one hell of a roller coaster of emotions while watching this movie. However, the closer the movie got to its end, the more it seemed to me that the makers had trouble coming to an end. It all seems jotted to one constructed final plot, which is sad because the movie built tense for 3/4 of its duration. The end left me with a bitter taste after the movie, despite really having felt all of the other parts. I'd recommend this movie to people who'd like to experience some extreme tension but eventually don't be too harsh on the plot. Expand

At times inexplicably surreal plot twists mingle with a seemingly updated array of pseudo-Hammer Horror vignettes and dislocated interjections of blood, guts and revolting gore.
I would say go see this movie and witness Collette's towering performance that hijacks the movie and leaves all else floundering in her wake. Recommended.

It's devastating, icy, sometimes absolutely brilliant, and it definitely ranks among the best works of its gender in the last decade. Expand

Something that plays as a dramatic movie first and then slowly becomes something else. Like "Rosemary" or "Exorcist" but without the high profile clout of those directors. This is two hours of an exploration of family tragedy and grief through characters struggling to cope.

To say much of this film is to ruin it, so lashing praise onto certain aspects of it is the best one can do. Not to say this is a film with a big twist, it isn't. Toni Collette is fantastic as is no surprise at this point in her career. All the performances carry their own, including one I was unsure of at first but grew on me throughout -- Alex Wolff. The cinematography, rhythms and pacing, sense of place and space, and sound design are all superb and work in conjunction to create atmosphere and dread -- like a pit in your stomach that continues to grow and grow throughout.

It turns into a genuine nightmare that absolutely worked for me. See it blind, see it as a movie first and foremost (not as a horror show with jump scares), but just see it.

If you're looking for buckets of CGI gore, loud noises, cheap jump scares and having your hand held through weak, schlocky exposition then THIS IS NOT THE MOVIE FOR YOU.

This is a deeply unsettling film that starts out with a slow, foreboding atmosphere which slowly ratchets up the tension to breaking-point until the third act completely descends into a frenzied and chaotic journey into complete and utter madness. While some people may have issues with the ending, more adventurous horror fans will thoroughly enjoy such an unusual conclusion in today's modern age of paint-by-numbers horror films intended to launch new franchises.

Hereditary is ultimately a bleak and relentless - yet well-crafted, technically brilliant horror ride filled with creepy symbolism, ominous foreshadowing and superb performances that ultimately subverts any expectations by the bonkers climax. I suspect many horror fans clamoring for a re watch to see what they initially missed lurking behind in the background of each masterful scene.

It's not the greatest filmI have a hunch that some of the people panning this film are fans of the found footage shock fests and gross out torture porns that have hijacked the horror genre for the past decade. This film isn't for them. It's not the greatest film ever made, but it achieves what it sets out to do very well. The slow pace may bore some, but the character development is some of the best in any genre. Toni Collette's performance alone carries the movie, I really hope she gets some awards recognition for this. The emotion she portrays feels disturbingly real in best way, you can feel her pain and psychosis. Scares are lingering and the supernatural elements are handled cleverly and without becoming plot contrivances. The plot is not the movie's strongest element, but it works and is presented in an extremely clever way that keeps the mystery intriguing throughout. Certain aspects of the plot feel absurd, but the strength of the character development pushes the absurdity into the realm of cosmic horror.

If all you're looking for is a shock fest to make you jump and squirm, this isn't it; go rent paranormal activity or saw. Hereditary represents what I love about horror as a genre. It can induce and examine complex negative emotions that leave a lasting impression on viewers. It makes you think about your own mortality, the **** things you've done or had done to you in your life, and what consequences it all may have. Horror done well like this can be the modern day equivalent of a Greek tragedy.

It all relies beautifully on the story, which I cannot spoil, but adjusts to the overall mood. I found myself shaking in my seat and taking deep breaths throughout the film. Hereditary: What's in Your Family?

Cinematography: 9/10 Many of the effects in Hereditary work due to the successful compilation of necessary elements for this particular film into a very well flowing arc.

Costume Design: 8.932/10 This might seem like a high rating - but, the attire throughout adds to the effects of the film. The attire makes me feel like I'm viewing the "American Gothic" painting. Also, I feel like I'm viewing the behind the scenes progressions in an overly-dramatic-exaggerated psychiatric ward. To better understand, click the link of the "American Gothic" to learn more about the actual painting: Hereditary hides as much throughout the entire film.

Film Editing: 9.798/10 In this particular type of film, the film editing has to be accurate to properly maintain the tonality of the flowing story -  and it was shockingly so. Very well-done.

Make-up and Hair-styling: 8.932/10 Every character is set well for the film.

Sound Editing: 9.479/10 This type of film hits the necessary parts so well which really brings about stronger effects and draws from the audience. Funny story: a woman at a store clicks her tongue and I quickly turn to her then begin laughing. She asks about my laughing and I tell her. She's not going to see the film. Not everyone can watch films like Hereditary and be alright afterward.

Visual Effects: 9.579/10 My goodness. I really don't even want to talk about it. Good job. Creepily-freakishly good job.

Story: 9.729/10 Alright, I'm spiritual. This film is demonic. The story is solid from beginning to end and the audience is fed multiple stories in one film which is always a nice-rare bonus. I literally remind myself multiple times throughout the film that I am watching a film. Hereditary is creepy on the surface and on all of its depths. At many instances, the film breaks from spirituality to frighteningly potential actualities - situations -  in a relationship between mothers, fathers, children, and their legacies. It's frighteningly well-done.

Acting: 9.792/10 It's a nice surprise seeing Alex Wolff since Coming Through the Rye. Still, there's no way around it; all the acting is on point. Annie, Toni Collette, is creepily phenomenal.

Personal: Am I the only person in full support of Steve throughout the film? There are a lot of heavy lessons on marriage throughout the film. This is coming from someone that has been conversing with many men in marriages recently and has been receiving the head shake to never marry. The men that I've come to discuss the matter with in front of their potential wives or wives tell me that some women are crazy. Their wives agree. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing either way. I'm only conversing and thinking. I'm sure there's a fair balance of crazy between men and women. Will I have to watch Hereditary with my potential future spouse to ensure I have a full understanding of what I might encounter on our journey?

Overall: 9.405/10

If you've read how "existentially terrifying" it is and walk in with the intent of sealing off your heart and mind so you can brag about how it's not scary after all, then you're simply not going to like it. Most horror movies operate within a very tight definition of "scare," usually accompanied by a jolt. Hereditary goes much further into the territory of nightmare imagery -- much of which is typically associated with the terrors imagined during sleep paralysis -- and can therefore come off as a bit comical to a skeptical eye.

But if you invest in this movie, if you give it your full attention and let yourself get sucked in, it will ruin you. Cast out the hype and watch it on its own terms, damn it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The character of Annie Graham was played exceptionally well with astoundingly realistic and profound facial expressions and body language helping paint a sharp picture of the character. The fear and angst was well expressed and the character’s body language was overall very persuasive. I strongly disliked the moment when she levitated up into the tree house as it took away from the realism and felt very detached from the rest of the movie however I am aware of the movie’s budget and the sacrifices that must be made to ensure that the storyline progresses (although it would be more effective if she just crawled up the tree quickly). There was no way around it. I felt as though Peter’s character could’ve been developed more and the bond between him and the family could’ve been strengthened. Because of the poor relationship he seemed to have with Annie I think that reduced the effectiveness of the ending. The characters seemed slightly distant from each other. In order to increase the fear factor I don’t particularly like how early on in the movie Charlie died. Because of her forbidding appearance I feel as though there was a lot of potential to increase the fear factor by including more scenes of her later on (which wouldn’t drastically alter the plot). I would also like to know more about Ellen and an explanation as to why Charlie possessed Peter’s body and became the king of hell. Why would she want to be in the body of the person that killed her? I really liked the camera work and sound effects which sustained the suspense throughout the movie although I believe the lighting could’ve been improved and some of the props seemed to lack symbolism or the rooms felt maybe a little bit bare with nothing to foreshadow. The twist with Joan didn’t seem to work, it seemed pointless as she didn’t add much to the story. Overall it was a good movie with interesting ideas and had plenty of disturbing scenes and anticipation. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My favourite thing about the movie that it is insanely clever. It is all about schizophrenia. One very important symptom is that the person is unable to tell the difference between reality and their minds' doing.

You watch the film. Something supernatural happens. Then it seems that it did not happen. You can explain everything with spiritual and supernatural forces, but you can also explain everything from the perspective of a mental disorder.

The grandmother's heritage gives the title of the film. This heritage can either be the spiritual cult, but it can also be the mental disorder that is hereditary.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rewards concentration

When her secretive mother dies, miniatures artist Annie Graham (Toni Collette), is almost relieved, as the two had a deeply fraught relationship. With two children, 16-year-old Peter (Alex Wolff) and 13-year-old Charlie (Milly Shapiro), and a loving husband, Steve (Gabriel Byrne), Annie is determined to do a better job of raising a family than she felt her mother did. However, when she suffers another, far more devastating loss, Annie's mental state becomes increasingly precarious, as a series of terrifying revelations about her ancestry are slowly revealed.

Hereditary is writer/director Ari Aster's debut feature. However, what's worth noting is that the film is produced by Lars Knudsen, who also produced The VVitch: A New England Folktale (2015). This is significant insofar as Hereditary bears more than a passing resemblance to Robert Eggers's film. Mood, tone, theme, pacing, narrative structure, shot composition; all recall The VVitch at times. Even the plot shares some important beats, most evident in the last shot, which is both narratively and compositionally identical to the shot in The VVitch when Black Phillip speaks for the first time - a BCU on a possessed character as a disciple speaks off camera. And like The VVitch, you either go with the plot and let it burrow under your skin, or you remain detached and most likely find the whole enterprise unintentionally hilarious.

In a more generalised sense, there is quite a bit to praise here. For a start, to say the film is a horror is to basically give away the last 20 minutes, as up until that point it's a superbly realised semi-realist study of the crippling psychological disintegration that can accompany bereavement. Speaking of giving things away, very unusually for a Hollywood film, Hereditary's trailer brilliantly misdirects the audience, making it seem as if the film revolves around the death of Annie's mother, when in actual fact, this plot strand is abandoned at the end of the first act, after which the death of Charlie becomes the central focus.

One thing the film does especially well is reward viewers who are paying attention. There are multiple hints and signs throughout of what is going to happen in the last act, and one especially well structured reward involves by far the creepiest moment in the film; the blond man standing in the shadows of the doorway, barely visible, smiling manically at Peter. This is actually the second time we see the character; he is also at the wake early in the movie, watching Charlie approaching the coffin, and, again, smiling unnaturally. This can be easily missed if you're not paying attention, and it's an extremely well realised pseudo-Easter egg. Also worthy of praise is Toni Collette, who gives a superb performance that partly recalls Shelley Duvall's hysterics in The Shining. Collette's ability to communicate everything in her psyche by simply changing her facial expression is outstanding, and somewhat reminiscent of that extraordinary piece of wordless acting by Halle Berry in the last scene of Monster's Ball (2001). This is especially noticeably towards the end of the film, when Annie is alternating between being herself and being controlled by Paimon; Collette's mastery of her own facial expression tells the audience everything it needs to know about what is happening.

Joshua Rothkopf, in his review of the film for Time Out calls it "a new generation's Exorcist." That's a bit over the top; it won't have half the same kind of societal impact as William Friedkin's film did, and it's nowhere near as good as the best horror film of the last few decades, The Blair Witch Project (1999). However, it's very well made, is creepy as hell, dares to put real grief on screen, and features excellent performances (and, thankfully, only a couple of jump scares). Well worth seeing.

So after seeing my fill of this tripe, it is not often a horror type movie will impress me. The original "Cloverfield", "Alien", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and a few others do it right. "Hereditary" is absolutely brilliant and will mess with the heads of even the most jaded horror/psychotic fan. This is a movie that cannot be adequately summed up in the plot description. It is a very twisted tale of epic proportions, first through the grief and suffering of the family featured as they experience a terrible tragedy. (No plot giveaways here). But as the core of the film slowly exposes itself, the situation begins to unravel and reveal horrific events and thanks to the brilliant work here by all the actors and superb writing, instead of the cliche (DON'T OPEN THAT DOOR, STUPID) or watching teens in excellent shape somehow fall down more than Gerald Ford, the supernatural takes over and pulls you in bit by bit, piece by piece until the film's almost over, only then discovering the whole story. What works here besides fresh ideas, cinematography and again, the demanding acting roles is a fusion between the horror element and the effects on the family who become mentally and emotionally torn as they are discovering the truth behind the truly terrifying events plaguing them. "Hereditary" is getting rave reviews and despite a couple negative comments here, will be a legendary movie, combining horror elements with truly psychotic and mind bending details that puts it in the upper echelon of the best of its kind. The original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was brilliant not for gore, which actually had very little, but it was a mind warp, just the same. Along with that classic, "Hereditary" will be in the same league as "The Exorcist", which still scares people, "Silence Of The Lambs", "Alien", and more recently "Cloverfield" and "A Quiet Place". Prepare to be disturbed. Very disturbed. Expand

I don't know when the last time I got cold-chilled, white-knuckled, and look-over-my-shouldered at a film was. The only horror flick that has stuck with me in the last ten years was The Witch... This'll be the second.

What is unarguably brilliant about this film however is its central performance in an utterly entrancing Toni Collette, well worthy of awards talk. Collette plays Annie Graham, a contemporary artist grieving over the death of her estranged mother, whose family become entangled in the supernatural after she explores the infamous practice of the séance. What slowly unfolds is a terrifying film, that grips you to your seat. To reveal much more about the plot of Hereditary would do this film a disservice; writer-director Ari Aster, even in his debut feature, shows himself to be a maestro of unexpected filmmaking that echoes of horror classics like Rosemary’s Baby, yet feels alarmingly fresh and truly horrifying. The narrative of Hereditary slithers and turns slowly, expertly paced and nail-bitingly tense. It must be said that the movie is not devoid of horror tropes; what saves this occasional sink into cliché is the abundance of shocking twists in the plot and the deeper meaning behind the film. For Hereditary is not just a standard supernatural horror, but also a telling meditation on grief and mental illness. This is shown through a stand-out performance from Toni Collette, whose face alone tells of a woman truly going mad in her own fear and anger. There’s an ambiguity to Hereditary which is eerily present; how much of what we are seeing is actually happening and to what extent is it just in Annie’s deranged mind? The film is just as much a psychological horror, a tragic yet thrilling exploration into the darkest depths of the human consciousness. Whilst Collette is brilliant enough to carry the film alone, she is aided by a perfectly picked supporting cast. Gabriel Byrne provides a much-needed paternal gentleness as Annie’s husband Steve, Alex Wolff boils with teenage angst and vulnerability as troubled son Peter, and newcomer Milly Shapiro is hypnotically creepy as even more troubled daughter Charlie. Unlike most horror ventures, the performances in Hereditary really stand out, superbly acted and never overplayed.
Artistic touches also help to elevate Hereditary, from a wonderfully grating score by Colin Stetson to Pawel Pogorzelski’s incredible cinematography (wide, square shots echo Annie’s miniature dollhouses, almost making us believe the film is nothing but a hellish game). Perhaps the film occasionally gets slightly wrapped up in exposition, but it still manages to be consistently compelling, helped by a stylish and sinister execution.
Hereditary brings a freshness to its genre; even with a classic setup, Ari Aster has crafted a stunningly made film, that simply reeks of pure horror.

An emotionally draining family tragedy that evolves to a nightmarish horror film that gets inside your skin, "Hereditary" is unforgettable and bone-chillingly terrifying.
