Movie starts out interesting and with lots of tension. Does drag a bit every now and then in the middle. The ending is too cliche and pay off is predictable. Honestly I expected more (because of the advertising etc). Yet they brought some new psychological tension-making scenes to the table, which were quite interesting (not necessary scary). It is definately one of those films horror fans need to watch alone in the dark with their headphones on - take my word on it. The rest is up to your tolerance of horror movies and imagination. Deeply silly, like watching a Monty Python film but with a lower budget and less class. I love Toni Collette but she had nothing to work with in this cack-handed mishmash of awfulness that reaches for the elegance of Babadook but collapses into a heap of gibberish. Collette's mom character has to fake anguish and depression (i.e. to herself) but she didn't quite manage to pull it off and just seemed fake, like she was putting in a "for scale" performance. The only redeeming factor was Milly Shapiro. Her performance was captivating and the film could have done with a lot more of her in it.

The most disturbing thing about Hereditary is that so many people find it disturbing. I shall choose to see it as an allegory for the rise of Donald Trump, which is the only way it makes sense.… Expand

Movie is extremely put together well. The soundtrack and audio is magnificent. The creators knew where and when to put music and sound effects. I was actually pushing my seat back at moments so that I wouldn't jump in the theater.

See... I would be praising this film if I got what I'd been promised from the first act, but the film quickly devolves into becoming just another dumb horror film that lacks in any form of depth from the second act on. The only reason I gave this film a 3/10 was because the first act was good and most other aspects of the film were passable. But the more I think about this film, the more I seem to dislike it. Most other bad films in the supernatural horror genre are at least fun to watch, but there were so many moments that I wanted to walk out of Hereditary. Even if I hadn't gone to see it with somebody else, I still would have refused to leave because I held on to that hope that they might just save the film by bringing it back to what the first act had promised, which is something they never did. If you want to walk out of this film at any point, do it, the film doesn't get better, it only gets worse. If you want to watch this film, I'd wait until it's on one of the major streaming services because it's not at all worth the money it would cost to go to the theater.… Expand

The horror and psycho genres are by their design predictable and especially with the ton of slasher films geared toward screaming teenagers, the studios knowing full well if the kids are too young to see their latest gore with no credibilityThe horror and psycho genres are by their design predictable and especially with the ton of slasher films geared toward screaming teenagers, the studios knowing full well if the kids are too young to see their latest gore with no credibility whatsoever they'll get it on DVD at a friend's or a parent will buy it for them. So after seeing my fill of this tripe, it is not often a horror type movie will impress me. The original "Cloverfield", "Alien", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and a few others do it right. "Hereditary" is absolutely brilliant and will mess with the heads of even the most jaded horror/psychotic fan. This is a movie that cannot be adequately summed up in the plot description. It is a very twisted tale of epic proportions, first through the grief and suffering of the family featured as they experience a terrible tragedy. (No plot giveaways here). But as the core of the film slowly exposes itself, the situation begins to unravel and reveal horrific events and thanks to the brilliant work here by all the actors and superb writing, instead of the cliche (DON'T OPEN THAT DOOR, STUPID) or watching teens in excellent shape somehow fall down more than Gerald Ford, the supernatural takes over and pulls you in bit by bit, piece by piece until the film's almost over, only then discovering the whole story. What works here besides fresh ideas, cinematography and again, the demanding acting roles is a fusion between the horror element and the effects on the family who become mentally and emotionally torn as they are discovering the truth behind the truly terrifying events plaguing them. "Hereditary" is getting rave reviews and despite a couple negative comments here, will be a legendary movie, combining horror elements with truly psychotic and mind bending details that puts it in the upper echelon of the best of its kind. The original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was brilliant not for gore, which actually had very little, but it was a mind warp, just the same. Along with that classic, "Hereditary" will be in the same league as "The Exorcist", which still scares people, "Silence Of The Lambs", "Alien", and more recently "Cloverfield" and "A Quiet Place". Prepare to be disturbed. Very disturbed.… Expand

I had such high hopes and Hereditary didn’t even come close. It does a good job reminding you of The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby, yet I also couldn’t help but be reminded of The Babadook and The Witch. It does a good job reminding you of The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby, yet I also couldn’t help but be reminded of The Babadook and The Witch. These are just two examples of films the critics did not shut up about for months. I went to see both due to the hype and was left disappointed. Hereditary comes along promising much of the same, I can’t help but get caught up in the hype. I’ve heard the hysteria, I’m prepared, I settle down ready to be terrified and instead I was bored and waiting for the credits to roll so I could finally leave. Oh sure they can compare it to The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby all they like, put it on all the posters if you want but it doesn’t make it The Exorcist or Rosemary’s Baby. Maybe I missed something, but for me Hereditary was only mildly better than your average horror movie.

After the death of her mother, Annie (Toni Collette) and her family begin to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. Despite a promising start Hereditary falls into the trap about half way through where it completely lost me, the plot became ridiculous and instead of getting scared I was losing interest. The first half was filled to the brim with atmosphere, so tense and gripping I thought we were on to a winner here. Hereditary puts the effort in to build the tension and create a foreboding atmosphere. Wonderfully shot, the cinematography is simply amazing. Many of the scenes give the sensation of looking at a miniature view of the set, an impressive amount of attention to detail, such a shame the rest of the film didn’t live up to this standard. It’s got some shocking scenes that will disturb you alright, and will no doubt stay in your mind well after the film has ended. Toni Collette is excellent. Her performance is carrying the film, yet the plot doesn’t offer much else, the hammy acting throws you out of the suspenseful horror movie and into over the top and generally trying to suss out whether it’s okay to laugh or not. I wasn’t the only one trying to stifle laughter on more than one occasion and I’m sure I won’t be the last. First time director Ari Aster hasn’t exactly given us a flop, it’s well directed for one thing and I hope his next film works out a little better.

You all know I love horror films so you can believe me when I say Hereditary does not live up to the hype it promises. You’ve seen similar ideas done before only better. Not recommended unless you just love seeing some disturbing cinema in that case enjoy. And don’t forget to scare your fellow movie goers with a tongue click AFTER the film has ended, NOT during a quiet and suspenseful moment.… Expand

Horror movies usually bore me to tears, but this was an actual movie, with characters I actually cared about. Horror does seem to be improving, becoming more cerebral, earlier this year there was A Quiet Place, but this one hit it out f the park.

This one will stick with me for a long time. It is definitely a slow burn, but in this case it works to the benefit of the whole. But towards the end you will have a hard time not covering your eyes. Best horror flick I've seen in years.

Or perhaps Hereditary is 'art-house horror' - for people who can't stomach films as disturbing as The Descent or as discomforting as The Witch. The ending was the most disappointing thing about Hereditary, after an ultra slow-burn build-up that hinted at a terrifying conclusion, instead we were given a curious sort of 1970s gothic horror-lite scene that managed to be somehow completely unshocking despite the presence of kneeling headless corpses. I couldn't recommend Hereditary to anyone, unless you are a film school student interested more in style than substance, or unless you can only stand moderate scares. And forget what the posters say, this isn't in the same league as The Exorcist.… Expand

Some classic horror films contain some sort of message of hope or light, but not so with this one. It is a hostile, harrowing, disturbing black hole. I still feel ambivalent about even posting this review. There is trepidation that this may actually encourage someone to go out and see the film. I would urge you not to see it at all, because it is relentlessly dark. It is very emotionally draining to watch. There is no excitement. There is no hope in it. There is only blackness. In particular, if you are a believer, don't waste your time on this film. The pervasive feeling of evil crawls into your skin and refuses to leave. Hollywood has decent material that comes out of it from time to time, but "Hereditary" is purely and strictly obscene. If you have kids, it is not appropriate at all. Take your family to see "Ferdinand" instead. I am not condemning horror films in general. These observations apply specifically to "Hereditary." Don't watch it.… Expand

Speaking of pay offs you really have to wonder if these critics are because the rave reviews they constantly give these A24 " HORROR" films are banal and insane. While there are interesting aspects strewn throughout with some intriguing grim subject matter, it meanders into a very dark disjointed story that goes into a very depressingly stupid realm much like 2016's The Witch. If A24 didn't constantly scam people advertising this as a full on horror film with a decent trailer with some horror cliche visuals, and then release a dragged on dark drama, maybe people wouldn't be outraged at them. I for one will never pay for another one of their films since The witch and i advise others not to do so. If you do, you are being swindled.… Expand

For example, the horror-movie-devotee in our trio began muttering "Boring" about 30 minutes into it, but I held out hope that eventually it would kick in and all the rapturous reviewers would be vindicated. On the plus side: Good performances, great Craftsman-style house to admire, and some nice depth of character. On the negative side: The ending was just so-so, and it borrowed heavily from the aforementioned "Rosemary's Baby," which is a truly good movie.… Expand

To enormous surprise, he created a strong cinematic mission statement supporting the misguided yet unforgettable spiritual social order of Hereditary. What’s the mission statement exactly? Well, let’s see:

He first sets up a dad, a mom, a boy, and a girl residing in a large wood house by a forest. The perspective taken here is through the matriarch, Annie, who has no choice but to watch her family pay themselves to the unknown haunts that beckon them. Hereditary’s power stems off how it takes its time to display a demand for us to accept family angst, staged through the nearly nonexistent lights above a conflicted dinner.

Everything else within Aster’s deconstruction of America’s nuclear home, especially the flickering image itself, appears top notch. Hereditary’s sound design helps transition between loud and quiet moments until you’d rather slice your own ears off than listen any further to the film’s satanic taunts. Harsh noise frequencies give a constant heavy pulse, scary paranoia established through a slow camera pan across art supplies that segues into the first scene. Rather than familiar instruments, a deep bassoon blares at a steady frequency below our ears’ capacity, supposedly mixed by demons to make your heartbeat race along to the score’s dark rhythm.

Hereditary‘s performances also triumph: Toni Collette (Annie) draws the peak of her career, her ritualistic eyes offering gradual grief until her disturbed desperate voice delivers a killer monologue. Likewise, Milly Shapiro’s (Charlie, the thirteen-year-old daughter) tongue clicks freaks you out more than The Omen. Hard to believe Milly previously played Matilda on Broadway!

Between these “humans“ trying to act human, the persuasively paced cast enhance Hereditary’s mindset on why people become a harmful investment, the slow camera pans drawing attention forward to the individuals’ shared disconnect.
Don’t think too highly of this attack on innocence though. A little fair notice for anyone falling under Hereditary’s most likely demographic of young adults: odds are you may receive the wrong positive ideas, particularly contemplation toward a glamorized a psychic medium career. Just wanted to make full disclosure before discussing the flick’s real meat.

Hereditary demonstrates self-blame condemnation, as Annie admits unidentifiable accusation of herself, a mysterious grief she paints through creating miniature models of familiarity. She sleeps inside the heated tree house to grieve, much like how Charlie sleeps inside the attic… which communicates her dangerously deceptive familial distance. Then Annie repeatedly tells her husband she plans to go see a movie when she actually attends a grief circle. Beyond her own lies: the teenage son, Peter, a bong smoker, has numerous life secrets he carries outside. Yes, everyone lies about their plans... except Charlie.

She seems better off at living than Peter, who constantly freaks out around his classmates to unholy extent. While these details of the family’s low points get shown, Hereditary takes its time to let you process the shock, each emotional beat exploiting fears of walking through dark empty hallways after peering around the room from underneath bedsheets. Eventually, following off the disturbed visual of an ant-eaten severed head, a scary cultic ritual brings all loose ends together.

…yeah. Based off my previous experience, such imagery honestly damages your moral senses to watch. The finale reminded me of my time watching Avengers: Infinity War. Throughout most of the film I thought, “Wow! I’m liking this writing!” But once the credits rolled, I thought, “Eh, never mind.” Except unlike Infinity War, which just gave an unexpected discouraging ending, Hereditary made me feel like the film less because being a Christian, its bleak, pointless pro-Satanism message upset me.

Hence why I had a peaceful night’s sleep immediately afterward—my inner vulnerability was unscathed. I believe The Silence of the Lambs benefits greater to watch since it proposes realistic solutions for our shared terror, unlike how Hereditary foolishly says sin triumphs without even saying what triumphs over sin.

We fleshly organisms might better off seize to have ears anymore… or eyes, or a nose, or a mouth, or hair, or cheeks, or a chin, or a neck, or any of the skull’s added pieces. Hereditary commands us to ultimately submit ourselves beneath whatever outdoes our control. The question remains: Will you obey Ari Aster’s smooth-talking against your supposed insignificance?… Expand

I was so taken with the level of sophistication of this “horror” movie a d its excellent cast. The story proceeds with good speed and there are a couple of shockers thrown in here and there. However, I just have to say, that despite the foreshadowing, the last 15 minutes or so just kind of blew the whole thing for me. I thought it just seemed to go right off the rails. Of those seeing it with me, we were probably divided 50/50 on being okay with the ending and not liking it. So you have to see it and determine for yourself what you think. It is a very well done movie and I understand people’s calls for Collette to be awarded for her performance.… Expand

Hereditary is an incredibly well crafted first effort from director Ari Aster. If you like psychological horror, arthouse horror, or thrillers with elements of horror, then Hereditary is the film for you. If you like psychological horror, arthouse horror, or thrillers with elements of horror, then Hereditary is the film for you. The direction and cinematography are painstakingly beautiful, and the shots truly drive the story. The acting performances are incredible as well, with Toni Collette and Alex Wolff really shining. Ann Dowd is a treat as always, and Milly Shapiro and Gabriel Byrne are also a delight to watch. The weakest point of Hereditary however, is it's script. While 70% of it is really well written and well done, some scenes and some lines of dialogue will leave you scratching your head. The rules of this horror world are really not set down, and some scenes take place in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, and others in the desert, and others in the midwest. I'm not sure if this was purposeful or not, but it would be nice for a few more clues. The sound design mostly sticks to cliches, unfortunately, but there are one or two moments of perfect horror sound design. There is also not one jumpscare in this movie, which is a real pleasure, and the tension building is incredibly fun. All in all, this is definitely worth a watch or two!… Expand

If you're a horror fan, this is a must see movie. Just when you think its peaking, something new is thrown at you. The tension and terror is palpable and deeper than any film I' ve seen in many years.

It’s a massive disappointment and I’m not sure why it’s getting such rave reviews. Plenty of other movies have had similar plots and handled them in much more interesting ways. The movie takes absolutely forever to get going, and when it does finally start to move a bit, it’s okay at best, and mind-numbingly eyerolling at worst. If you’ve seen more than five horror movies in your life, you’ll decipher the plot within the first act. There are absolutely no interesting surprises here.

If you’re looking for a good horror movie, go see either of the Conjuring movies. Much better than this giant heaping pile of disappointment.… Expand

There are some very good moments, but also a lot of derivative and borderline incompetent ones. I would definitely go to see this director’s next film, but if you go to this one with reasonable expectations, you will enjoy it more.… Expand

I thought there would be a fresh take on the genre, something to think about - like what Get Out accomplished last year. But it turned out to be just a variation on Rosemary's Baby. And I didn't find it scary at all. Maybe that's because the idea of a devil holds no currency for me. You have to buy into Christianity's notion of the existence of a devil for this film to have an y power. Having said that, the director made some good choices in his attempt to foster a dark atmosphere. The art direction was terrific and poor Toni Collette did a great job looking agonizingly scared most of the time. Bottom line: I'd say skip it unless you really believe in Lucifer.… Expand

If you want a scary-but-logical story you can follow from beginning to end, it's not.

For me, the peril in the best horror films is fairly easy to explain: The girl is possessed and the exorcist is going to try to save her. The hotel is haunted, the father is under its spell, and he is threatening his wife and son. I couldn't figure out what the main peril was in this one until literally the last minute of the film, when it was explained to me, and still didn't add up.

I don't agree that the performances were fantastic. Every scene seemed to have a silent "dun-dun-DUN!" sound effect at the end, and with everything so overwrought, I just didn't see a lot of emotional range or transformation going on:

Mom: Manic, freaked out
Dad: Detached, uncomprehending
Son: Dazed, terrified
Daughter: Creepy, man! Just CREEEEEPY!
Mom's friend: Superficially caring, but obviously EVIL

We've seen these characters before.

I was obviously disappointed. I went in hoping for a great horror film, and experienced a film that loads up on common horror elements and practically screams at the audience, instead of the other way around.… Expand

Never have I had such high expectations for a film and it exceeded it so much. This film shocked me more than any I've seen in a long time. This is already a horror classic. This movie was less of the slow burn suspense thriller-horror that is was advertised as and more or a meandering waste of time just waiting for a MST3K episode. I waited through some of the credits as I was sure I had been Shyamalan'd again

The story was lackluster with no characters being likable and only two being very sympathetic. Half of the movie I found myself hoping something awful would happen to most of the main cast just to get rid of them and move the plot along to something more interesting. There are several major plot holes and multiple instances of "horror movie logic". Several things that feel like they will be major plot points early in the film have no real relevance and are only there to set a creepy stage for the rest of the film. A few of the cast members have acting talent shine through during rare moments of this film but with the terrible writing it could not save this one.

The music and sound effects in this movie are frequently done hamfistedly. The music will go from low suspenseful rumble, to climactic Jaws is about to appear, to overbearing, to questioning if this will cause long term hearing damage; all with little regard to what is happening on screen. The special effects are all over the place with some being done well and others missing the mark completely. One of the stand outs is a point late in the film that should look like an apparition crawling quickly along the wall and instead looks like a panicked bug in a bed sheet being drug through the background on a wire. When this is part of the final climactic build up for your slow burn horror thriller and several members of the audience can't help but audibly laugh you have failed somewhere along the way.

The single redeeming part of this movie is the cinematography. This film has some amazing sweeps and pans that help to guide your focus through whatever the poor writing wants you to feel is important. It has wonderful use of depth of field. There are some beautiful and technically demanding shots including the opening longshot. This is not enough to suggest this movie in its entirety and but may mean shots from this could be used to study cinematography.

In the end I can not comprehend the hype on this one. I spent more than an hour after seeing this movie thinking and talking with the person that saw the movie with me. We desperately tried to find some less evident metaphor or greater meaning. Despite our best efforts this is just a poor horror movie with an amazing marketing team.… Expand

A24 should take a large portion of the credit after producing The Witch, It Comes At Night, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and now Hereditary, which is possibly their strongest installment yet. While audiences will still have to endure commercials for quickly forgotten horror duds like Truth or Dare, they can find solace in this strong 2018 terror.

Hereditary follows a family living in somewhat isolation in the Rocky Mountains whose grandmother figure has just passed away. No one is sad. In fact, Annie (played by Toni Collette) seeks out grief counseling in order to understand her lack of sorrow for her mother's passing. Annie then reveals details of her troubled upbringing and troubles with her mother, making the audience realize that grandma's passing may be for the better. Annie also reveals her family's struggles with mental illness, illness that ultimately caused her brother to take his own life at the age of 16. Though Annie does not directly say it, she seems to have a burden lifted off of her in her mother's passing. The only person distraught over her death is Charlie, Annie's troubled daughter. Charlie and her grandmother were quite close, and Charlie is struggling to understand who will show her love the way her grandmother did. This film quickly devolves into madness, not unlike Eraserhead and The Shining; I often thought of Wendy running around the Overlook Hotel. Mental illness clearly plays a role in character actions and decisions, but so does the supernatural. The most interesting aspect of Hereditary (other than some fascinating camera work and set pieces) is its ability to blur clearly supernatural events and a reality altered by mental illness. Are the images that plague the family real events, or are they simply hallucinations? The answer is not clear. What is clear is that this family is about to go through some hardships, and grandma is to blame in one form or another. The film is genuinely terrifying, unpredictable, and filled with enough mystery and suspense to thrill the audience for a full two hours. Hereditary also adds an artistic touch to its brand of horror, which may polarize audiences but will certainly lead to some great discussion points.

By no means is Hereditary a "perfect" film. It plods a bit in early scenes. Some shots move quickly from terror to unintentional terror. Not all character motivations are entirely clear. No viewer should watch the film expecting perfection; the viewer, however, can expect two hours of tense, brilliantly crafted horror entertainment. Hereditary is a rare great film that ultimately more than makes up for its minor issues by keeping the audience guessing from scene to scene while conjuring up some of the most thrilling images and situations that the horror genre has seen in a long time.… Expand

This is because at first viewing it is not entirely clear what you just watched. Then you put the puzzle pieces together just like Annie building one of her dioramas. When the scales fall from your eyes and the enormity of the evil - real lust for power - at the cost of all, that you really see what just happened.

This is a supernatural melodrama and both ends of the rope burn ever so slowly but with extreme intensity.

Aster has made as assured debut as you can as both writer and director. This is no pastiche as he charts an extremely particular vision. Aster makes the house, the lighting, the camera - malevolent bystanders to the growing comprehension of horror. Think about how many horror films you see where you actually don't care who gets killed or not. This is the antithesis of that.

How is this a cast for your first film - Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne and Ann Dowd..and they are stood up by the incredible children. The haunting debutante Milly Shapiro and the star in waiting Alex Wolff.

The real horror of Hereditary is that you could remove all the supernatural content and it would still be extremely disturbing.… Expand

I really like horror movies. I was very much looking forward to this when I saw the reviews and Metacritic score. I was ferociously disappointed. What a horrendously bad movie. Gabriel Bryne! It is all a slow but terrifying build up to what can ultimately be described as a demented ending. First off, the acting on the part of everyone is outstanding, especially Toni Collette. The story is very well done, but at times you can get lost in what exactly is going on and I felt they could have done a better job explaining at times. Much of the film's emotional duress comes from the drama within the family, which adds another layer to the depth and terror. I've seen some negative reviews from people saying that the movie took a bad, unexpected turn or something in the last 20 minutes, but I disagree. There are multiple hints at what is truly going on throughout the film if you pay attention, so the end shouldn't come as a surprise. The cinematography was outstanding, and I think they hit the perfect atmosphere throughout the film. They straddle the line between "really demented" and "just messed up" perfectly throughout the movie. This is the first horror film I've seen in a very long time that made me lose sleep. Despite me rating it an 8, this movie definitely isn't for everyone. Some will find it to be too much, and they aren't completely wrong to do so. To me it was outstanding, and would recommend to any moviegoer who is up for the emotional torment Hereditary has to offer.… Expand

This movie reminds us of what real, genuine fear is by portraying a very realistic and flawed family and how they cope with loss. I genuinely felt my heart pounding harder than it has from watching a movie and my friend almost had to leave the theater from a panic attack. It adapts tropes from countless other horror films then subverts them like a magician with a huge bag full of tricks. I just watched it a second time and scanned all over every shot to see if I might have missed something. People who complain about its run-time, as if that goes against the film, should reconsider film because art doesn't have to be constrained to a cookie-cutter rubric. People who say this film lacks jumpscares are desensitized to them. There definitely are jumpscares in here except instead of resorting to to cheap, startling, non-contextual "BOO" moments there are uncomfortable scenes of imminent death making me feel like open prey about to be attacked. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My girlfriend picked this one and she now owes me big. This tired, old storyline was done before. Rosemarys Baby, The Exorcist, The Omen, Rob Zombies Lords of Salem and The Witch are all examples of similar storylines. Been there, done that. This was a boring, slow burn movie that needed narration at the end by a supporting character to explain to the audience what they just sat through two hours for. If you get a chance, miss it or rent it down the road. There were a few shocking scenes, but other than that I was watching a plane crash in slow motion. You know its going to, just not sure whos going to survive it. Thats the main reason I didn't walk out.

Two positive things I can say are the acting is good and the cinematography was done well too. It's actually a very, professional well made movie. Just a very boring one with a hokey, trope filled and overused story.… Expand

The superb Toni Collette delivers an intense performance and stretches of the film thoughtfully tangle with how grief impacts a family and the following silence of unspoken anger and regret. But the film also puts itself at a disadvantage early on by being completely mirthless and also rendering a central tragedy before the halfway mark. The family stakes are somewhat reduced after that point. Ultimately, the film just trades on some previous horror/paranoia tropes which then push the plot to a not un-entirely surprising conclusion.… Expand

Oh man. I loved this movie. As someone who loved The Babadook and The Witch, this film was excellent. What I love the most is what others have already said: this film relied more on tension, sound, and imagery to give you that feeling ofOh man. I loved this movie. I was not ready for some of the things shown in this film. Sometimes I had to do a double take to make sure I was seeing what I was seeing and some of these scenes will stay with me for a long time. It felt like I was watching something I shouldn't be seeing, and yet I wanted to find out what happens next. Toni Collette's performance was fantastic and so well acted. The simplest way to describe Hereditary would be that its an imperfect blend of The Babadook and The VVitch. That's where the film has a few major flaws. In its identity, as the horror aspect of Hereditary is truly disturbing the drama does drag on quite a bit (leading to pacing issues) and is at odds with the storytelling - causing an incohesive narrative (lastly the final gripe of mine was the uneven lighting). That said, Hereditary will go down as a classic in the horror genre with its jawdropping final act that truly channeled The Exorcist. The acting is absolutely brilliant all around (Collette is amazing as always, the one who surprised me the most was Alex Wolff, he was fantastic) and for his first feature Ari Aster did a phenomenal job.… Expand

Hereditary is the first movie of director Ari Aster. The movie is scary, but not scary as we are used to. It has no jump scares and it has a long time to describe the pain that the family in the movie is going through. I don´t know if this was the intention of the director, but Hereditary makes your blood cold using all that you think you know about a scary movie against you; you never know what is going to happen and if you´re into the movie it´s kind of a torture because you will never look away because they are certain details that you´re going to be interest in and those details will also make you doubt about what is going to happen. A lot of people are not going to like this movie because it is not a "normal" or "generic" horror movie, but the people that love to have surprises in movies and love to be challenged in movies, will love this one. Toni Collette gives the best performance of her career, she has to do a lot of things in the movie, some things really scary and heartbreaking that you just think, "how did she do it? Also Nat Wolff was really good, his character is in pain almost the entire movie, and he knows exactly how to control certain emotions so that it doesn't´t get over the top in some scenes. This is not a perfect movie; one of the issues that I have is that in the middle of the movie, there are a few moments where I was wondering where the movie was going but not in the good way, I thought that the movie was just stuck, but there was only like ten minutes of it, and also I would love more ambiguity in the movie, it´s not that the things that they give away to the audience were bad, just that the way that they did in the last ten minutes of the movie were given literally, and I would love that the movie would give the audience the chance of discover some things by our own. In the end, Hereditary is a really good movie, one of the best horror movies in recent memory, a movie that you will not forget after you got to sleep, a movie that you will talk about for a long time.… Expand

Nope. the concerns about hype are real. That, and you've seen all of this before. Many, many times.

It's not that this is a bad movie, it's just not anything like the stellar effort we were told to expect. When you watch this you're going to see things you've seen numerous times in other movies, going all the way back to Jacob's Ladder. There are moments that disturb and a couple of jump scares. The audience I saw the movie with were talking among themselves and it was a universal "Meh". Absent the promotional effort this could have gone straight to video. Toni Collette is the only reason to pay full price, and that's a statement about her performance and it's greatness. Maybe a matinee. Or you could just revisit The Conjuring and experience a much better movie, that provides much more powerful scares.… Expand

This is real horror. Ari Aster is a writer and a director with the largest possible amount of passion for his craft. Nothing about Hereditary feels cheap or predictable. The horror relies not just upon loud noises or disturbing imagery, butThis is real horror. Ari Aster is a writer and a director with the largest possible amount of passion for his craft. Nothing about Hereditary feels cheap or predictable. The horror relies not just upon loud noises or disturbing imagery, but upon subtlety. As a visual and auditory experience, Hereditary is almost perfect. There is a tremendous deal of skill shown in the scares of this film: every shot lasts just the right amount of time, always revealing the frightening imagery at just the perfect moment and for the proper duration of time. Aster understands that things not shown can be just as scary as what appears on screen. The music is really what puts things over the top and elevates the film to the horror of works like The Exorcist. There is constant tension because the music knows when to come in and it knows when to stay away and let the other sound effects run their full course. It all comes together as a work of brilliance. There is some poorly done, very noticeable audio dubbing that distracts from the movie's tension, but it's not too big of a deal.

The horror is so effective because it's based around events that feel genuine, like they could actually happen. The story blends the supernatural with the realistic in a fantastic way that makes for the type of horror experience that sticks with you to make your own real life as terrifying as the film.

Toni Collette is an absolute revelation in this film. She delivers perhaps her best work ever and injects the atmosphere of the film with the raw terror and loss experienced by her character. The supporting cast isn't always quite as impressive. Alex Wolff didn't quite sell some of the scenes that demanded the most of him. But the performances are overall leaps and bounds above average, especially for a horror flick.

The story doesn't always seem like it's going in any one direction and can feel cloudy throughout the first viewing, but it all wraps up very clearly at the end. The film's conclusion is one that never releases any tension, but rather ends at the most horrifying possible moment. The rising action continues and never falls, and it makes Hereditary one of the best horrors of the decade and shows Ari Aster as a more-than-promising up-and-coming filmmaker.

However, once the true horror begins to set in, it rewards you for paying close attention to all of the small details early on in the film, and the story as a whole becomes clear. It does feature some conventional scares, but they're always necessary to the plot, and never feel cheap. You care deeply about the characters, and there are enough surprises that you should be engrossed for the entire running time. Without spoiling anything, just try to pay attention closely while you watch it. It does have a coherent story, but it's sometimes cryptic and complex, and it certainly has deeper messages that warrant a second viewing. A truly frightening film.… Expand

The horror aspect slowly builds, and builds, and builds, and then it's released in a way similar to how a thriller would release all of the suspense that has been built up over time. This film invokes a feeling of eeriness. I never found myself to be scared or ready to jump out of my seat, instead I found myself feeling creeped out at times. And, honestly, I much prefer it that way. The story is enthralling in a way that I didn't expect. As you might expect, it is very family centric. It's a slow burn, but I felt an urgency to find out all of the answers and as a result it seemed like the first 100 minutes of this film flew by. And the last 25 minutes or so, my goodness...they were exactly what I was hoping for.

Overall: Hereditary is a great arthouse horror film. Don't go into it expecting to be scared to death, but be prepared to feel a little creeped out.… Expand

I came into this movie with nothing but the highest expectations and boy were they completely exceeded. As a long time horror fanatic I have seen it all and thought there was very little left in the genre that could shock me to my core; AriI came into this movie with nothing but the highest expectations and boy were they completely exceeded. As a long time horror fanatic I have seen it all and thought there was very little left in the genre that could shock me to my core; Ari Aster's debut left me not only shocked but inspired. From the get-go Hereditary is a symphony of twisted camera work, implicitly dark tone, and magnetic performances that were eerily relatable. As the film went on these components hurl the viewer into web of paranoia strung together by an antagonist that has no physical presence in the movie but is made more real by the confounding series of events. I was struggling to sit still in my seat. I genuinely felt my own sense of panic succumb to the cascade of macabre imagery and heavy thematic dialogue. The films denouement is nothing sort of devastating and embodies the very definition of tragedy; haunting you long after the credits stop rolling and leaving you horrified. On all elements this film is nothing short of a masterpiece; framing, tone, lighting, acting, story, editing, soundtrack... all of it assembled with such grace and love that it deserves a place among those classics that kept us awake at night. A+ work Ari can't wait for your next picture.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I honestly don't care: A24 doesn't know how to do horror! Most people seem to think 'The Witch' is absolutely terrifying and amazing whereas I not only found it to be one of THE WORST movies I've ever seen, but also zero percent scary and not even remotely creepy, and I also thought it was the worst unintentional comedy I'd ever seen since 2006s 'The Wicker Man' with Nic Cage! The year after, with 'It Comes at Night', I personally thought that had a much creepier atmosphere and more intriguing premise and was slightly better overall, but the final product left much to be desired. Well, with this latest (and waaayyy too overhyped) addition to A24's filmography, they've once again proven to me that they don't really know a good or truly scary horror movie when they see one, at least in my opinion they don't. Much like 'The Witch' and 'It Comes at Night', it was such a slow burn with little or no horror until the very end, and none of these films have any moments of horror whatsoever if you ask me. Furthermore, it certainly didn't help that not only did this remind me an awful lot of 'The Witch', but it had so many predictable moments and tropes that we've seen time and again in so many previous horror films. Silly-looking naked old people (yep 'The Witch' and 'It Follows' had that too), creepy smiling dead people (the Insidious films did this much better), possessed people climbing walls and hiding in ceiling corners (sounds like just about every possession movie out there), possessed people banging their heads on desks, walls, etc. (seen that a million times), a dog getting killed (A24's infamous for that at this point), a possessed person joining a ridiculous-looking witch-like coven or cult at the very end of the film after most or all of their family's been slaughtered (you guessed it, 'The Witch' did it too!) Overall, the only positive it had going for it was Toni Colette's fierce performance. Everyone else was pretty underwhelming to be honest. And like I said before, this movie just isn't scary and there's literally nothing new to see here that hasn't been done before, whether better or worse. And on one final note: A24, no more horror films please!!! You're just not good at it! I don't care what anyone else says!… Expand

I have watched a lot of 'critically acclaimed' horror movies. The Witch, The Babadook, It Follows etc... I honestly didn't care for any of them. This movie lived up to the hype. I can't really explain why it's so horrifying, but it just feels so... wrong. The way the film captures absolute grief and despair made my emotions churn, and there are some moments in the final 20 minutes of the film that were absolutely horrifying. Of course, this film is nothing without Toni Collette, who gives a performance worthy of an Academy Award. She walks a very fine line between portraying an emotionally traumatized, psychologically damaged woman and not hamming it up to the point where it's funny. I'm actually not kidding, I think it's one of the best performances from an actress that I have ever seen. Alex Wolff also gives an absolutely wonderful performance. The movie is a slow burn, but it's never boring. It's never pretentious either, which I felt was the case with 'The Witch' and 'It Comes at Night'. I honestly think that it is equal to the Exorcist in its horrific imagery. It's really one of the best horror films I've seen in a very long time, and I highly recommend it.… Expand
