Ironically, the last time I saw a movie this original and provocative was Adaptation and Being John Malkovich, two other Spike Jones movies. I was pleased to see it turn up on the Oscar nominees for Best Picture but appalled that Joaquin Phoenix didn't get nominated for what was one of the most extraordinary performances I've seen in the movies in very long time. This is a movie that will mark this era as a distinguished mirror to the times in which we live in. Expand

Appropriate to think of it as a feature-length Twilight Zone episode. Funny, thoughtful, really well done. Fine acting all around... Phoenix in particular. Never really knew where the story was going, which was nice.

How refreshing: A beautiful film about the future brilliantly written, acted, and directed without a hint of politicism, cynicism, or irony. In a great year for film, Her comes out on top.

My personal favorite movie of 2013. It's a true gem, and I love it. This movie really takes the exploration of emotions and relationships to new, awesome levels. The Arcade Fire soundtrack is a masterpiece too.

Theodore works for BeautifullyHandwrittenLetters.com, a company established sometime in the near future where people are either too lazy or just mentally incapable of writing their own letters to their loved ones. The irony of her begins (as do so many other films) with someone else’s love story. The trials and tribulations of Theodore’s love story not only mirrors the love we share with others but also portrays our uncontrollable and inexplicable dependence or ‘love’ for technology. In that sense, her becomes part science fiction love story/part docudrama, with a message that is both a parable of the direction human behaviour is headed and a misunderstood, timeless love story for the ages. Either way, her is the most captivating and responsive film of the year, demanding attention with a grueling look at our ability to love and be loved.

her is a cinematic masterpiece for a new generation of technologically burdened individuals. From the moment our two-star crossed lovers meet, we are transfixed, as they are. From the moment I laid eyes on it, I had fallen in love. Being a believer of love at first sight, or in this instance, love at first sound, her has been a film that has left quite an impression on me and has given me so much to think and talk about.

This is a peculiarly self-conscious film with themes that are both fantastically impossible yet completely plausible. Essentially, Theo falls in love with the new operating system that is found on his mobile device. The operating system, created by a company called Element Software (substituting for Apple), have crafted the first ever artificially intelligent operating system. Unfortunately for Theo, once he hears the voice of his new OS (operating system), the chump never stood a chance. As the spirals swirl on his computer screen and his personalized operating system is initialized, a voice begins, “Hello I’m here…” and from that moment on, we empathize with Theodore and his ability to fall in love with a voice that is full bodied, raspy and alluring, yet empty; in the same way technology has the ability to be both fascinating and enthralling, yet unfulfilling. The Siri-like persona is voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Originally, the voice of Samantha in Spike Jonze’s film was going to be voiced by Samantha Morton (hence why the name Samantha stuck and served as a tribute to the original talented actress), but Jonze opted for a more recognizable voice whose image off-screen is as seductive as when she is on screen. Johansson nails every subtle nuance in her voice-work and offers a career best performance as Samantha. Her ability to express not only the deep desire she has for a physical form but also her unexplainable love for life, learning, and Theodore, will hopefully land Johansson a spot in the history books as the first ever nominee in the Supporting Actress category without ever actually appearing on-screen. Let’s just hope the Academy recognizes this high-point in the medium as well.

The world according to Jonze looks to be one filled with humanized androids, a world where people endlessly look down at their smartphones, and are never more than an arms reach from any of their devices, and his vision very much resembles the world we live in today. The people in his world are easy to relate to especially with the very possible realization that that is what our growing technological wonderland may actually look like in the not-so-distant future. Jonze takes a very literal interpretation of ‘falling in love with your smartphone’ as portrayed in his very heavy-handed love story. Contrary to skeptics, Jonze triumphs in his ability to script a world where anything is possible. Jonze’s tale of people falling in love with technology is not actually a far stretch from our current Westernized mentality, where people are literally attached and completely dependent on the little devices that organize our lives, our schedules, our thoughts and evades all new and old experiences.

To begin with, it crawls along at a snail's pace, relying on long soulful gazes and background music to convey emotion. That is not a wise strategy when the main love interest is a faceless voice.

Next comes the dialogue, which is so vapid and cliche-ridden that it is difficult to distinguish one character from another. It is not that the operating system sounds real so much as that no one else in the film does either. There is not one real individual here -- just a generic male who has generic friends and is going through a generic divorce.(As a side note, I would like to suggest that the phrase "Are you O.K.?" never be used in movies or on TV by anyone ever again).

And that moves my critique on to the story itself. A man falling in love with a computer software system, i.e. regarding such a system as interchangeable with a person, might have been interesting as a theme -- in a comedy. But this is played straight, as a drama, and thus becomes pitiful. Of course, as I said, it's hard to blame the guy when the people around him sound computer-generated as well. But the rest of us know better. We know what real people sound like (and look and feel and smell like).

This is the sort of movie that gets made by people who are too young and unreflective to come up with something original. Too bad for all of us. I urge you to disregard the high praise for this film coming from critics. They should be taken across someone's knee and spanked with a hairbrush for passing this off as anything other than bad.

Okay, the operating system slash girlfriend that tells you you're great and kisses your butt, what??? How about the opposite is true, "You can't love someone that just kisses your butt!" LOVE relationships ARE supposed to be about growth and challenge, which this film and its stereotypical hackneyed romance plot provided by no means. I noticed the film started off interestingly enough, with a guy who needs an operating system for a "conscience" or a "god figure" (probably for about only the 1st 10 minutes really) AND perhaps this would've been a much more interesting plot line to pursue. However, it devolved so hurriedly into a sappy, romantic mess that I didn't care and should've quit at the half hour point. And, Scarlett Johansson certainly took it and ran here as well, the $$$$$$ anyway. DO NOT WASTE ANY TIME WITH THIS SUPPOSED ACADEMY WINNER! Expand

It's more of a dark and foreboding insight into the human condition set in a dystopian future. There are some interesting sci fi elements at play concerning AI and the eventual evolution of free thinking AI that can evolve at an exponential rate. I would have preferred for the film to center on this theme a bit more and explore it's sci fi concepts but it insists on staying very human and that's it's downfall for me. Way too much emotion and sentimentality. It genuinely moved me, I won't say it didn't but that's only due to filming technique and me having a sentimental disposition. I felt emotionally manipulated. Joaquin phoenix plays his role very well but I found his character too self pitying and weak after a while. I also found some of the plot elements unrealistic. For starters, why would you design a commercial AI for use as a companion and give it the ability to learn at such a fast rate, or the ability to pine after a physical body? But you could debate that the only way to make a decent AI companion would be to endow it with familiar human qualities,

A good film but drags a bit and once it's central themes have been digested there's not much to really captivate or entertain you

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I like Spike Jonze and have a lot of time for love stories. I also have faith in the public opinion and generally agree with mainstream critics. I saw the film before I saw the reviews and automatically assumed it would flop massively. The main reason I thought this is because I found the entire film incredibly boring. As far as I can tell the plot is as follows: A recently divorced and fairly wealthy man falls in love with a computer program which is designed to act like a thoughtful woman and creates generic piano muzak for him. He then realizes that he is in love with a piece of software and gets very upset about the whole thing. And that is pretty much it! The plot is pretty much nonexistent.

I am not the type of person who always desires a plot that twists your head and is constructed with dizzying complexity. I enjoy films that are atmospheric, gentle and allow you to get some food for thought without being bombarded with the directors thoughts. This does did not get into my head at all. I found Theodore a very irritating character; very naive and almost like a pubescent teenager, but with a proper moustache. Anti-hero's are fine, over-emotional and predictable bores are not. I couldn't tell if this film was a kind of social commentary about how we are attached to technology too much and have forgotten how to love or just some kind of bizarre love story in which we are supposed to feel empathy for the introverted man who has lost faith in humanity and falls in love with a computer. The whole film is laced with nauseating sickly sweet dialogue about Theodore and his digital concubine while they marvel at people with normal body shapes the beach, listen to shoegazey music and (in the most climactic part of the film) run hilariously and cheekily through a train station. I thought this film shared the same emotional range with The Lady And The Tramp.

I shall pluck some reviews from the endless list of positive ones and watch the film again, perhaps I'll change my mind. Perhaps I'm a coldhearted cynic. Or perhaps this film was just terrible.

This is one of the worst stories I've seen, it's a movie about feelings, but feelings are for homosexual people or middle aged single women, I hate when I feel invested in a movie and this movie annoyed me because of it and who falls in love with a phone? DUUUUMB.

The characters weren't good at all, it made feel invested in what was happening which I hate when movies do that, they actually put effort into crafting an emotional tale of the difference between a virtual relationship and a real relationship...why would they do that? they should of have made a film like GIGLI which was better in every single way.

Do not watch this filth, it's too original and has too much depth to be entertaining and the characters were too relatable to be interesting, this is disgusting that people think it's a good movie, they are way too immature to understand what makes goodfilmaking.

For two hours I was stuck in Theodore's lonely and complex life, and Her became a part of my reality, to the extreme that I was hoping that I'll never go back to my true, lame, and shallow reality. It doesn't matter how much deep you are, Her will take you to places you have never been to before, and will ignite some feelings that you have never experienced or ever felt before. It's merely a masterpiece, that makes us look at life in a very different deep perspective that reveals to us the true feeling and understanding of love and it's affect on us. Also showing us the capabilities of this feeling that is able to make human beings fall so deeply in love with an operating system just because of the mutual feelings they are having, dismissing the physical aspect in love, which shows us that love is way beyond anything physical or sexual. Even though it's set in the future, and the lovers are far from ordinary, one can (or should be able to) look past this facade and see the timeless themes underneath.
I rarely write reviews, but I had to for two reasons: First, this movie is very good, unlike any movie I've seen. Second, though most reviews are positive, I couldn't help but respond to the hate heaped upon it by those who didn't like it. The movie is not for everyone, to be sure. It won't appeal to most older people, (at least those who haven't come to see the world as official in the age of the internet), and its sex scene, though not visually graphic, is one of the most sexual experiences expressed on screen I've ever seen that isn't on a website with multiple x's in the domain name. Also, if you can only stomach a romance of the rom-com variety, or a love story occurring simultaneously with the lovers taking out a spy organization, this is not for you.
The movie is filled with tough moments, from its shocking expression of human disconnect, to a potty mouthed video game character, to the strangest threesome ever, there are moments intentionally arranged to have the audience members ask themselves "wtf is going on". Yet it's in these moments that we decide how we define love, sex, and the relation of the two. It seems to me that most negative reviews stem from the reviewer refusing to allow these questions to be asked. An open mind is strongly suggested. Don't not see this movie because one of those reviews.

My biggest problem is with its technical plausibility. Theodore acquires a retail version of newly introduced (meaning v1.0) OS1, an artificially intelligent computer operating system. Fine so far. However, the film's depiction of OS1 is super-hyper-idealized, it's flawless, something that shouldn't be attainable until like version 50 and then only after dozens of premium add-ons and upgrades. But if the director wants to go this way then that's his prerogative, but plausibility is important and can't be magically waved off. As Theodore's relationship with "Samantha" evolves you can see scene by scene that they touch upon the highs and lows of normal, human relationships. It has an episodic series feel to it, like a short-run tv show that Netflix or Hulu would do. If you "get into" the movie then you may need tissues at the end, but again you have to shut off the "what the @#$?" side of your brain because how can a retail version of an operating system evolve to do what Samantha does at the end?! There's all manner of warranty and lawsuit claims that come from that. Again, setting all that aside, it was interesting and touching, not a waste of time, but I'd like to see a story with a more realistic, flawed AI operating system (and that request was answered by the release of Ex Machina (2015)). The concept of a "humanized" AI is not as credible as in other media, nor is the romance between the protagonist and the AI. Still original and quite unique, but even with its rareness, it somehow fails to impress.

I can also say that I was never so pleasantly surprised at how funny a movie could be. I expected it to be a weird, sort of quirky drama, and even with that I would have been fine. But no, Spike Jonze and his genius creativity instead made me, as well as the entire audience, burst into laughter at the most unexpected sequences. This laughter, coupled with the utter devotion between the entire cast (specifically Phoenix and Johansson's performances, with Mara coming in at an honorable mention) truly gave peaks of happiness and love. These peaks, however, soon give way to the most personal depiction of depression and technological isolation that I've seen yet. This truly is a masterpiece, and takes away "12 Years a Slave"'s claim to my personal best movie of 2013, although I can't doubt that the latter is still more significant to the medium as a whole. Because his movies were not based on usual concepts, that something immensely varying from each others. Sadly, he's not consistent in filmmaking, he does take large gaps between the movies otherwise he would have been one of the most talked director in Hollywood beside other giants. The fact is I did not know it was his till I decided to watch and that made so curious towards the time I going to spend for it.

Joaquin Phoenix was spot on in the movie. Man, I still remember him in the movie 'Gladiator' where he appeared in a dark shade. I was only so young and I hated him in that role. Now everything has changed, in the last few years he's coming stronger, especially after 'Walk the Line' and 'The Master' which gave him the Oscar node. He's famous for his unique display of the roles in his all the movies and this movie is not too far from another top notch performance. Yeah, way to go Joaquin Phoenix.

This movie dealt with one of the rare subjects that set in the 2025. We don't know how will be the future look like, but the director created remarkable fictional world and inserted equally outstanding character(s). This was the story of a man called Theodore, a loner and a professional letter writer. One day he decides to buy the newly released operating system with artificial intelligence. He begins to encounter the life changing experience and instantly fall in love with it. In the world of reality it is impossible to have a physical relationship with an AI, so how far it goes and ends is explained in the movie's death.

Absolutely an extraordinary concept, but the only thing that did not stand up to my expectation was the story. It was predictable, but the scenes created for those stories were finely patched throughout. Really, it amazed me. Makes me happy that it won for 'original screenplay' at the Oscars. I know it was too late that I am seeing it, actually I'd seen all the Oscars movies of the year except this one and now everything was done and dusted. So I have to wait for another 6 months for another shot. Between that guess the movies that's going to have a chance for the upcoming Oscars. As for this movie's concern, it is not a missable. So recommend it, if you have not checked it out do it as soon as possible. Cheers!

Love at first byte.
Sorry about the awful pun. Don't even think the movie is as horrible.

It is difficult for a movie to have an after taste of philosophical
questioning leave you with a warm heart, but Her pulled it off like a
pro. While having some issues with pacing in the third half the
relationship between Joachim Phoenix's character Theodre and Samantha
voiced by Scarlett Johansson was a spark that managed to warm my heart.
Phoenix is an amazing example of a talented actor. In one film like
"The Master" you feel strange and uncomfortable toward him while in
"Her" you know that if you met his character you would just feel like
hugging him. Theodore is warm, funny and organic. Scarlett Johansson in
the other hand manages to charm the viewer and have great chemistry
with the male protagonist just by using her voice. She is complex and
interesting because if you didn't know, she is an A.I. The amazing
thing is that you feel her actually being real and having emotions and
sometimes the film purposely reminds you that she is artificial. You
know Spike Jonze did a good job when your thoughts are carried forward
intentionally by his project. When I said this movie warmed your heart
I really meant it. Arcade Fire outdid themselves with the soundtrack
and every time a song mixes itself with the beautiful photography you
get those bittersweet knots on your throat. Speaking about photography,
it is beautifully shot. Many shots here you just see and build a
meaning for them. Surprisingly "Her" has a very smart sense of humor
too. It is subtle and never feels over planned because it mixes in with
plot so well.

In the end "Her", while not perfect, brings up many philosophical
theories with its amazing and original writing, but at the same time
plays with your feelings like no other romantic themed movie.

I give "Her" a 9/10.

Following Theodore Twombly as he fumbles his way through everyday life - Alienating friends and concealing himself away from the world. Until the day that a new, artificially intelligent operating system is released, and he is introduced to Samantha, the bright and hopeful voice of a young woman coming from his computer. Over the months that ensue, the two of them form an unbreakable bond and build an amazing friendship that will test their understanding of the world, their knowledge of love, and the unsteady foundations of their relationship built out of false expectations.

It should be remembered as a film that was both daring and beautifully realized in a warm, touching, and heartbreaking tale that stayed with me long after leaving the theatres.

Spike Jonze does a great job directing, using extreme closeups, many of Joaquin Phoenix's face, and shots of images to show past memories. Phoenix using his talents well: he's likeable, and even geeky enough, but not too much. Scarlett Johansson should get a special Oscar for her voice part. We seem to have needed a film about artificial consciousness, which calls to mind Frankenstein, but I still had a need for the protagonists to be changed in the course of the narrative, for me that didn't and that's where the film fails. But I'd say that 'her' is better than 2001 because it will never lose an iota of its shock value and its speculations are very likely. Kubrick focused more on Nietzschean viewpoints to meditate on sentience, Jonze focused on the mind-body problem and was able to raise the same themes in a shorter, more personal story. Where HAL9000 has become a bit of a laugh, Samantha will always be lovely. Expand

First the screenplay is just delicious in many aspects and scenes, visually good, Johanson being just a voice over character is great, Amy Adams amazing as usual and it has a good slap in the face on what our society is turning into. It's NOT a perfect movie, it has flaws, it lacks a little bit of credibility from Joaquin Phoenix and it may be tedious in some scenes for some people. I'll give a 10 just because it's my personal favorite of 2013.

While many will say "Why is he falling in love for a computer?" well I saw it as a satirical, sad and even creepy criticism of what we are becoming as society, "Techno-Zombies". Somehow people don't realize that the way Phoenix's character looks on the film (dumb, loser, zombie, etc.) was the point of his character, they exaggerate (or maybe not) how society looks nowadays and where is going. And people remember, if the shoe fits, wear it, if not then you will not be offended by my statement.

What it's real? what is just an illusion? Is it possible to mix both somehow like Samantha? (I think no, that's why I feel sorry for Phoenix's "lame" character in the entire movie) I think this movie has been overshadowed by overrated movies that used "Star power" to hype people (I'm looking at you American Hustle). If you are not a "script freak" or you don't like movies that kinda make you uncomfortable or you are in love with your cellphone and may get offended somehow (which I respect, everyone can be the way they want to be), don't watch Her. (But I recommend everyone to listen "The Moon Song", it's good.)

The best part for me was Scarlett Johansson's voice; breathtakingly sexy. This movie was definitely a risk taker in our time era, but I applaud Jonze for the originality. I took this in two ways; one being that a person can find love in whatever makes them happy, especially a computer based off of your own personality; two being this guy is nuts if he actually believes a machine can humanly love him back. A odd movie that despite me personally not liking how things evolved in the second half, is strangely beautiful and touching.

I have to say that this is one of the hardest movies I ever tried to rate. I'll give it an 8 but I can easily understand people rating this movie with a 10 or a 5.

This movie is called "Her" but its all about "Him", what a fantastic weird character leading this odd love story, which isn't really about this love story, but about love in general, and how it evolved along the life of "Him". It touches a very important human issue in a very subtle but deep way, our egocentric need to have perfect partners, our lack of acceptance of others flaws.

If you are in the mood for a love story with a subtle but strong philosophical component, look no further, this is a great movie. If you don't like love stories, or drama in general, then this is definitely not the movie for you.

The first thought I had after seeing the movie was, “How did Spike Jonze ever think something like that up!” The material is incredibly original, and it probably should have received a nomination for best original screenplay. The movie is also well cast. The acting by Joaquin Phoenix is first rate. It’s too bad he doesn’t seem to be well liked by the Hollywood crowd. While I’m not a huge Scarlett Johansson fan, she is quite credible and does an excellent job of expressing emotion as a disembodied voice. Having recently seen American Hustle I had a hard time getting used to the rather timid character portrayed by Amy Adams. Though I’m not sure you would call ‘Her’ Best Picture material, it’s a far better movie than Wolf of Wall Street.

That being said, this movie is not for everyone. It’s definitely different, but has the potential to become something of a cult classic. (Think ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, with a more conventional ending). The movie is set in the near future, but the future is a bit of a sterile, lonely and nerdy place. People are hesitant. They don’t interact with each other well, and when they do, their conversations are awkward and their behavior is forced. (Some reviewers seem to mistake this for bad acting.) Fashion has also taken a turn for the worse, as people in the future dress badly (especially the men who seem to favor really high-waisted pants).

Although the basic premise of the movie “Lonely man falls in love with the voice on his operating system” sounds a bit creepy, and might have been if Jonze hadn’t done such an excellent job, the movie really isn’t the least bit so. The ‘sex’ in this movie is of a variety that is intended to make you a bit uncomfortable. There is only a brief bit of traditional (gratuitous?) female nudity, and no traditional action scenes, which again may discourage the average viewer. But, if you are still reading this, then don’t be discouraged about seeing it, it’s a terrific movie. It’s a story about loneliness. It’s about the basic need for companionship, the struggle to fulfill that need, and the mistakes we make along the way. If you’re open to that kind of story, then I highly recommend this movie.

It wasn't believable at all but I was still drawn in great performances throughout. My only complaint is the Awful scene when Theodore stupidly turns into a different character and accuses Samantha (the OS) of cheating on him. Really? REALLY?
As if he forgot the OS is an AI. We can only assume that every OS has the same female voice. (Scarlett Johanssen) (sorry if I Spelled her name wrong.) If i remember right it does Say OS 1 when buys it so of COURSE it would be the same voice. Wouldn't he be smart enough to realize that its the more than like nearly the exact personality/voice of every OS. That's my only complaint besides it does Drag on a bit but that's it. I would wait for the blu ray

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Her is not just a simple love story, it's a beautifully crafted cinematic experience. While the Samantha might just be a computer, the emotions you feel between the two are real, and surprisingly believable. I want to first talk about what this film does right. From the very beginning, we are given a main character who is depressed and tired of his life after a somewhat recent break-up, which seems to be a cliche. But this works for the story, because it's this sense of loss that propels him to his chance at connection with another being: an AI. It sounds like it could go wrong, and eventually it does, but the journey of this emotional connection between two souls from different worlds made me contemplate my own life in my own need for someone to be there. The cinematography is amazing, the character development is brilliant, the script is absolutely insightful and well-thought through. But, this movie is not perfect, and there are a couple nit-picky reasons why I opted to give it a 9 instead of a 10. The movie focuses almost way too much on sex in my opinion, and physicality of relationships, and I can understand the reason for that, it's trying to focus on the theme that we are physical beings and the distance between Sam and Theodore is because of that, but it felt like it just put way too much emphasis on sex and lust. Every relationship need physical intimacy, but for me, they pushed it on a little too heavy. The other problem I had was the ending. There was no need for Theodore to end up (presumably) hooking up with his good friend, who had also just had a break up, after the final shot. When Sam left him, I thought it would have been a lot more powerful if Theodore had gone to the roof by himself, sat there, reflecting on everything he had experienced, learned from it, and learned to love himself, not just jump into another relationship. But those are only minor plot pickings had an issue with. But overall, Her was a fantastic journey from start to end. I laughed, I cried, and most of all, I changed for the better. Probably the best movie of the year. Expand

It starred Wally Cox playing a super nerd who falls for his (giant) computer. It's quite amusing to see what the producers of that show thought a modern computer would look like. The computer communicates with Cox by displaying a series of cue cards on the front of the huge console. An attractive assistant technician tries to get Cox's attention but he's too concerned about the feelings of his mechanical friend. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Have you ever thought about how technology will shape our future? Have you ever been wounded by an ex-lover so badly you thought you’d never recover? Are you afraid of interacting with the opposite sex? Well let me tell you, you are not alone. In the film Her, we meet a sullen, heartbroken man living in the future searching for ways to fill the void left by his ex-lover. His despair takes him to a super-intelligent computer program called an operating system that he soon develops a very strong relationship with. It is becoming apparent that new advances in technology have created a shift in how human beings interact with each other. We see the possibilities of how technology will shape our lives and how human interaction may or may not suffer greatly. If you like movies that generate crazy, but realistic scenarios for humans to deal with, this is definitely your film. Expand

As someone in their early twenties who spends most of the day on a computer, I felt oddly terrified while watching and felt the urge to gather a few friends and go outside.

It's the ultimate desire of any emotionally immature person: the creation of an echo chamber, the realization of someone you created yourself to suit you without bothering with any of the 'empathy' and 'communication' parts that include talking to a real person.

Starting from the beginning: the protagonist seems like the typical artsy romantic who refuses to mature and sees any contradictory discussion as a personal attack. In response to his loneliness and desire to share a connection to someone, he creates the personality of 'Her'. It snowballs from there. Free tip: When your computer has a more active social life than you do, it's time to go outside.

Had this movie acknowledged how disturbing their relationship was evolving, beyond a few words from the ex-wife, this would have been a great movie. Had the protagonist LEARNED something from this about the nature of humankind, his own flaws and assumed responsibility for his own situations, this would have been a great movie. Instead, it was all played straight and slightly disturbing. Yes, why work at a relationship when we could all create our perfect someones and just spend all of our time with them?

Credit where it's due: the scenery is lovely. The music is more than wonderful. The performances are great for the material. But if you want something with a similar tone, but where the main character sees what he was doing wrong, just watch Ruby Sparks.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. if people say they like this then it must be because they see it as a warning about AI. I'm almost done with the film and based on it scoring a 90 here i'm guessing that the best thing possible happens in the last ten/fifteen minutes. I don't understand how its good at all aside from him not having sex with that freak blonde who was somehow spying on him and samantha.(I do however like the way that she seemed like a robot version of samantha even though we knew the voice was Johanson's. I was watching it with low volume and trying to fall asleep but this was retarded. I think the only thing the illuminati forgot was that the cat in the beginning fantasy should have started off alive (though i'm sure its because they plan to do that in a new 50 shades movie. I feel like Amy Adams probably made this movie and she was trying to prove that she wasn't illuminati by distancing herself from sex by being in a relationship with an ugly man(not pehonix). But it's seemingly impossible for her to not be illuminati if you ask me. Her line about love being socially acceptable insanity is just her(the illuminati) trying sell the idea of love by bringing it up yet again by making it seem interesting (the illuminatis version of love though really just means sex though. I'm surprised Rooney Mara and Amy Adams' characters haven't gotten together seeing how all this love of new technology is some serious lesbian fantasy bullcrap. I guess I just can't get over the dead cat thing even though Pheonixs character isn't all that intrigued by it. I'm seeing now that hes getting shown up by another AI which is just about as cucked as it gets. I don't want you to read this and be confused- I don't hate women I only hate the ones who are above a 5 on the hotness scale. Lol hes jealous of the AI girlfriend cheating on him with 8,316 which is nothing compared to what a human girl can sext. and they do...i actually remember i used to listen to the soundtrack its good. well i'm glad the OSes left but this movie was cancerous and watching it again would the worst idea. this is juaquins worst movie I've seen yet and I've seen some of I'm Still Here...I gave it a 1 only so that people don't see me as being a "hater" and just move on. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really like Joaquin Phoenix. In this movie he is a sad hipster going through a divorce, who falls in love with his artificially intelligent operating system. He plays the part of a depressed hipster loser very well, so props to him for that.
Thinking that this will be a score for me, a sci-fi fan and my wife, a romance fan, I picked this movie for us to watch. What I didn't expect was for the movie to fail so badly at doing both genres. Being the nice guy that I am, I watch the occasional romance movie with my wife, and some of them are pretty good. The Vow was a sad movie with hipsters bohemians that I really liked. The Rebound was a romantic comedy I couldn't help liking.

One thing that makes a romance succeed is if the characters have actual personalities. The sad panda protagonist seems to have a personality that makes us want to commit suicide on his behalf, and the OS he falls in love with, Samantha, is just too perfect in every way. The first thing this hyper intelligent AI wants to do when it is switched on is have a relationship with its owner. Pretty weird. Even weirder is that it never really shows how they fall in love. In the world of romance this is a big no no. The moment the couple falls in love is integral in the story. Way to screw that up Jonze. I guess expecting more from the writer of Jackass was a wrong thing to do.

On to the sci-fi bit. The sci-fi in this movie is so utterly pathetic it made me want to cry. It is a fact that the occulus rift exists today. It is quite a wonder that the only solution that the lovers have to meet (and this was the hyper intelligent AI's idea) was to get some random chick off the internet to pretend to be her. You would think that by the time we can build AI capable of naming themselves we would be able to simulate touch in a virtual environment or at least be able to make a passable fembot. The movie pretends that robotics and virtual reality never existed to create an alternate hipster future where you are stuck with an even smaller screen in your awkward hipster shirt pocket where people are constantly mumbling to their computers on the bus. In fact the whole thing views like a hipster male iPhone sex fantasy based on the Siri character. Besides falling in love, the only thing this AI seems to be able to do is send and sort e-mails, make tea and transcend known physics to leave you without an operating system on your computer. And we thought Windows was awful!

The movie in general is so full of the ideal hipster world, which should rightly be called a hellish dystopia of mid 20th century style mixed with people who seem depressed and bored with their lives, divorcing each other because of where you should put your shoes when you come into the house. I know where I want to put my shoe: right up Jonze's backside for writing such a bad screenplay and torturing me with hipster dystopia for 122 minutes.

Towards the end, and in no way am I ruining this movie for you, the AI suddenly decides to bugger off with its friends leaving our depressed meatbag alone. He and his recently divorced friend go up onto a rooftop, and a glimmer of hope twinkled in my eye when I thought that they would commit suicide because their operating systems left them. Unfortunately it just ends there. You don't end a romance movie with an unresolved question like "do the hipster losers hook up" and given that you have molested sci-fi and romance, the least you could do is offer a consolation prize of a kiss between the hipster losers. But nay. It just ends like that.

The movie is a desperate attempt to offer social commentary and to be deep, but it even fails at that. There is no moral of the story, and there is no resolution to the protagonist's dilemma of being a lonely hipster with poor fashion sense.

Move over, HAL 9000. Take a hike, Skynet. After decades of being typecast as an agent of destruction or (at best) the harbinger of dystopian things to come, artificial intelligence gets a romantic lead in “Her,” Spike Jonze’s singular, wryly funny, subtly profound consideration of our relationship to technology — and to each other. A truly 21st-century love story, Jonze’s fourth directorial feature (and first made from his own original screenplay) may not be Middle America’s idea of prime date-night viewing, but its funky, deeply romantic charms should click with the hip urban audiences who embraced Jonze’s earlier work, with some cross-pollination to the sci-fi/fantasy crowd.

Not least among Jonze’s achievements here is his beautifully imagined yet highly plausible vision of a near-future Los Angeles (exact year unspecified), where subways and elevated trains have finally supplanted the automobile, and where a vast urban center crowded with skyscrapers sprawls out from downtown in every direction (a clever amalgam of location shooting in L.A. and Pudong, China). Just a few months after “Elysium” foretold an Angel City beset by enviro-pocalypse and class warfare, Jonze cuts the other way, envisaging a society where green living has triumphed and most of the world’s (or at least America’s) social maladies seem to have been remedied — save, that is, for an epidemic of loneliness.

This is how we first find Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a former alt-weekly writer who now plies his trade as a latter-day Cyrano de Bergerac, penning other people’s love letters as a worker bee for the online service BeautifulHandwrittenLetters.com. (The actual “handwriting” is generated by computer, a lovely metaphor for our lingering analog affections in the digital era). Laid low by a recent separation from his wife (Rooney Mara, seen mostly in staccato flashbacks), the divorce papers all but final, Theodore drifts about in a depressive haze, more adept at channeling strangers’ feelings than his own. Until, that is, he meets Samantha.

Heralded as the world’s fist A.I. operating system (“It’s not just an OS — it’s a consciousness”), Samantha (aka OS1) enters Theodore’s life rather by chance, and over time, like so much technology, makes him wonder how he ever lived without it. But then, Samantha is no ordinary OS: It has a voice (Scarlett Johansson, who replaced Samantha Morton during post-production), an attitude, and a curiosity that seems, well, almost human. And therein lies Jonze’s masterstroke. Whereas the very notion of a man falling in love with a machine would have once seemed the stuff of high fantasy or farce, in “Her” it feels like just the slightest exaggeration of how we live now, in a blur of the real and virtual — “dating” online, texting instead of talking, changing our “status” with the click of a mouse. A generation on from the fugitive android lovers of “Blade Runner,” no one in “Her” has anything to hide.

Lack of physical presence notwithstanding, Samantha at first seems close to the male fantasy of the perfect woman: motherly and nurturing, always capable of giving her undivided attention, and (best of all) requiring nothing in return. But what begins like an arrested adolescent dream soon blossoms into Jonze’s richest and most emotionally mature work to date, burrowing deep into the give and take of relationships, the dawning of middle-aged ennui, and that eternal dilemma shared by both man and machine: the struggle to know one’s own true self.

The courtship scenes between Theodore and Samantha (including a freewheeling day trip to Venice Beach) are among the movie’s most disarming, with Phoenix disappearing as deeply under the skin of Jonze’s wounded, sensitive alter-ego as he did the roiling caged beast of “The Master.” (Shy of Daniel Day-Lewis, he may be the most chameleonic actor in movies today.) But it’s Johansson who pulls off the trickiest feat: She creates a complex, full-bodied character without any body at all. Detached from her lethally curvaceous figure, the actress’ breathy contralto is no less seductive, but it also alights with tenderness and wonder as Samantha, both here on Earth and up there in the Cloud, voraciously devours literature, philosophy and human experience.

Indeed, in Jonze’s radical retelling of the “Pinocchio” story (by way of 1984’s techno-romance “Electric Dreams,”), Samantha’s great existential crisis isn’t that she yearns to be a real, flesh-and-blood human. Rather, it’s her dawning realization that humanity may only be one station on a greater and more fulfilling journey through the cosmos — Kubrick’s Star Child come of age at last. How ever can an average Joe like Theodore hope to compete with that?

Her is an outstanding movie, in part because of its originality, but also because of its execution.

I can't see writing a detailed review of this movie. It is obvious that it is widely considered to be excellent. To me, it is writing and acting meshing in the best possible way.
I should qualify by saying that the characters in this movie are very much like people I normally have in my life - mannerisms, speech patterns, subject contexts, etc. So, perhaps I relate to the characters more closely than most people would.
It seems obvious to me that the movie is not about technology... yet, individuals seem to be misconstruing the point of the movie not realizing that. Apparently, the technological context of the movie is difficult for many individuals to orient their thinking around. It is worth noting the technology is not particularly advanced (we are not dealing with time or interstellar travel) and will probably be available in no more than 20 to 50 years from now (I have worked in that field).
This is a film for thoughtful individuals. If you require car chase scenes, blazing guns, splattered bodies, explosions, etc. - you will definitely want to move on to something more to your liking in the action genre. This film involves long scenes of dialog that involve nuanced acting and requires a modicum of an attention span and an interest in what makes people behave as they do.
The point of the movie is that people think they want perfect relationships and don't understand that the imperfect human condition is actually the fulfillment of human relationships. A meaningful human relationship takes thought and effort and the willingness to deal with the flaws of others.

The main characters do not seem credible, which may be due to the movie's uneasy relationship to comedy. It is indeed possible for comedic characters to be memorable, like Peter Sellers so often demonstrated, but in this case everyone is just flat and not interesting. There is absolutely no arc to the story or to the experience of the main character; he has the same flat inflection in the beginning, middle and end. The Saturday Night Live parody is perfect, because it demonstrates how much the movie depends on a surface gloss of slowly moving cameras, an intrusive score, high saturation imagery, etc. If they had cut out 40 million of Hollywood gloss it might have helped force the characters to carry more. Once again the Metascore is so out of sync with my own perceptions, I am afraid that Metacritic is no long the semi-reliable barometer it used to be. Expand

The idea of a man that falls in love with an OS is exceptional but not so strange as it sounds, because in the society that we live the technology is like air, we can't live without it; and probably in a nearby future a relationship between human and computer would be possible. This thing makes the movie so unique; there have been lots of films about the future, but Her shows one that actually could happen. The message that is hidden below is about something that the protagonist does and that sometimes we also do it, which is to take shelter in the technology because of the fear to face the reality. That explains the job that Theodore has, why he is passing throw a divorce and also why he is so lonely. In addition to him there is Samantha, the voice of the OS, the amazing thing about her is that she is discovering the world, learning of life experiences and evolving as a consequence. I still cannot believe how Scarlett Johansson manage to transmit these, you can feel the wonder in her voice, how she test human feelings and her reaction when those things overwhelm her. Spike Jonze gives us a masterpiece with strong direction and screenplay, a beautiful original song and heartbreaking performances (Scarlett Johansson deserves all the prizes of film industry). Expand

Past that incredibly subjective and probably wrong and insecure barrier, it was a good movie. I'm not really into the genre of romance, but this was very difficult not to relate to. Decent world-building that doesn't really act like it wants to be something else other than functional to the movie, realistic in its odd yet probably already explored by other movies/books premise, original and, at times, powerful.

Set in a futuristic world, Her is basically a film about modern relationships that comes complete with all the charm and cuteness of a relationship, but also the pain and anguish that it can cause. Brilliantly written and directed by Spike Jonze, Her brilliantly blends romance, sci-fi, comedy, and drama, and really has a way to stick with you. I would also be remiss if I did not mention the brilliant score here. There is no wonder it got nominated for an Oscar, because it worked perfectly here. The acting, led by Joaquin Phoenix in a typically awesome performance and Scarlett Johansson in a great voice-only role, is great. Rooney Mara and Chris Pratt also stood out in particular here. While undeniably odd and quirky, Her is a moving film that will really hit you if you let the oddities not bother you. Expand

More than any movie I've ever seen, my opinion of this film is based on who I am and where I've been in my life, and I think that will be true for everyone who sees it, whether they love it or loathe it. In its own way, this alone makes Her a work of art.

Regardless of what you bring to this film, writers, particularly screenwriters, will benefit from studying the superb craftsmanship, particularly the flawless foreshadowing and its use in the expression of theme.

Theodore's story is fascinating, showing how technological advances can change people's lives, but they will never replace human feeling and warmth. .

The direction and screenplay by Spike Jonze are impressively naturalistic, with everything feeling very free flowing. The set design and cinematography are also pretty impressive. However there are moments when the movie feels ridiculous and you become detached from the experience, not only during some especially strange scenes but occasionally during just conversations between Samantha and Theodore. But overall the very good things about the movie far outweigh the bad and I recommend the movie to anyone looking for something not only incredibly different but beautifully put together. Expand

I know there are certain elements from other films in any particular one movie but Her is a bit of a smorgasbord of a film that borrows heavily, in its themes at least, with the 2007 gem Lars and the Real Girl. Eccentric, aloof and at oddsI know there are certain elements from other films in any particular one movie but Her is a bit of a smorgasbord of a film that borrows heavily, in its themes at least, with the 2007 gem Lars and the Real Girl. Eccentric, aloof and at odds with the world personalities who build relationships up with the unorthodox and artificial only to be tested further in their introspective challenges throughout their lives until said conclusions. This (i'm pretty sure unintentional) cloning in its story telling is what slightly hampers what is a strikingly retro, endearing and prescient film that touches on some eerie questions evoking classic sci-fi.
Jonze's has never been the conventional guru as we've seen in his other intelligent enterprises "Being John Malkovich" and "Where the Wild Things Are." Jonze sets out to tell a narrative and deliver all the mysterious details for us to believe each character. His focus on Theodore, giving him a real sense of loneliness without falling into cliché character ticks and beats that we've seen countless times in other romantic films, Jonze constructs a real man living in a world where technology has taken harbinger over human connection.
Phoenix is suitably quirky and gives his character a dollop of everyday guy amongst all his geeky layerings (though perhaps a little bit too much like that dude from Big Bang Theory) he seems always vulnerable and with all the futuristic technological achievements going on around him the film is at once profound and whimsy and yet foreboding and intimidating. For me though, the performance of the film was not even visible, but only heard. Scarlett Johanssen gives us a unique performance as the thoroughly enthralling and sensual voice of Samantha. All those cute ways and infectious laughter carries Samantha to life. A film like this will only work if we believe that a man can actually fall in love with Samantha. The way Scarlett breathes vitality into Samantha, we do.
It becomes so introspective, delicate, dreamy and predictable that you almost get sucked into a kind of lull and Jonze has a habit of making his characters unsympathetic but there is no fighting with its essence of love and longing no matter how clever and beautiful it thinks it is. Now..I'm off to town to purchase one of these fancy new systems!

Jonze's script is smattered with ideas that add to the texture of her. Many scenes show Theodore strolling through the streets, persons around him with their heads down, occupied with their ear pieces. An all-too-familiar image in today's phone-obsessed culture that paints a kind of low-key, apocalyptic picture. The director takes a few jabs at gaming culture too — in the future, video games finally give up and just let all the characters scream swear words, racist insults, and misogynistic non sequiturs familiar to anyone who has spent time playing Call of Duty multiplayer.

Her's moral questions dig even deeper than the idea of man/machine relationships. Late in the film, Samantha introduces Theodore to an OS pieced together by the writings of a deceased philosopher. Programmers have revived the dead in A.I. form. And somehow, that's less advanced than what the operating systems are doing on their own.

Her is staggering in scope while exploring the tiniest facets of intimacy and attraction. Phoenix's introspection thrives in Jonze's living, breathing sci-fi landscape, accompanied by Arcade Fire's soft piano melodies that feel like Theodore's own digital signal. her builds and builds in unexpected ways as it climbs towards a profound conclusion, as messy, passionate, impactful relationships always do. Examining his own life, Theodore tells Amy that he worries, “I have felt everything I want to feel.” her digs into that rumination, stretching it across the past, present, and future.

The masterfully done science fiction film her features a remarkable performance from Joaquin Phoenix and a moving, intelligent story directed with restraint by Spike Jonze
