The greatest disappointment David Yates had the best book of the series and he made the worst movie of the saga.

I explained a lot to my wife during the movie because it doesn't make too much sense if you haven't read the book. The ending was less than emotional. Sure, I heard about 3 people in the theater bawling but they were little teenagers that are so wrapped up in the book that they can't differentiate between. The movie still makes the characters appear like juvenile kids. At the current age of the characters in the movie, you would expect them to be more mature that they are shown to be.

The director cannot expect Its no more a kids movie, way too serious and matured and kinda dragging. The movie was dark just like how the book was, but the thing what i didn't like was that the story wasn't explained properly. The director cannot expect everyone to have read the book. I actually went with a friend who hasn't read the book, he was left fully confused i had to explain the story on the way back. In the previous movies they put only little things from the book and explained it well but here they have tried to put more story and failed to explain it. Even then there was some scenes which were very well taken. The background score could have been better, some parts would have been better if there was a music at the background, without being silent. The comedy was very good. What i think is that the movie would have been much better if they have put the climax fight from the book by removing some unwanted scenes which wasn't there in the book. There wasn't much magic or fight in the movie which my friend was expecting and it also failed to satisfy me by not showing the plots properly. Even though this movie lacks magic which the previous movies had one thing has improved a lot, the acting specially Dumbledore, when i watched the 4th movie i was very disappointed by his acting, instead of being calm and matured he was so jumpy and overactive but here he performed very well by bring out the real Dumbledore from the book. My suggestion for the movie makers would be to bring back John Williams, the music he composed for Prisoner of azkaban is one of the best composition i have ever heard. Overall it was fine. Expand

Order of the Phoenix left me thinking that you had to know the books in order to make sense of the story. David Yates and Richard Kloves have taken that to an extreme in this film. Large elements of the film make absolutely no sense whatsoever unless you've read the book. If you've read, then you can plug plot holes with what you know. Otherwise, all the characters seem to know things the audience is never clued into for the entire film. That's a cardinal sin in storytelling. I'm a huge fan of the books and films, and my expectations for Deathly Hallows' storyline have been reduced to zero by this film. Expand

In fact, Rowling's book lacks a self-contained story and is itself a Two consistent complaints--(1) that the movie recklessly, if at all, adapts the book and (2) that the movie has no central story--ironically settle one another. In fact, Rowling's book lacks a self-contained story and is itself a hodge-podge of fillers that simply builds an emotional bridge to the conclusion. So the film represents the basic play of the book very well. In fact, considering that #7 basically saves Hogwarts for a final fireworks show (and otherwise forgets it), Yates basically had no option but to treat this as Hogwart's/Dumbledore's farewell (and Malfoy's/Snape's hello/grander hello). That being said, switching out a few teen tryst scenes for a few scenes more directly following the book's slightly elevated arc of a plot would have resulted in less viewer confusion--and fan frustration. Treating the movie as-is, this installment bravely decides to rest on the shoulders of the actors and largely succeeds in the endeavor. Broadbent's Slughorn matches Staunton's Umbridge from Phoenix, which is saying something, and Rickman's Snape presses the character to new places. For my money, only two movie characters absolutely embody their counter characters in the books: Snape and Luna. Which leads to the concluding note: as the movie wages so much on the talents of its young actors, it suffers because the actress who plays Ginny just isn't up to the task. The "romance" (ick) scenes between Harry and her are uncomfortable, to spin it positively. Since Yates doesn't mind taking liberties with the novels, let Harry end up with Luna and don't worry about explaining it (we're used to a lack of explanation at this point). Expand

The acting skills of the cast as a whole have noticeably improved from other installments, and the stronger focus on characters besides Harry was a nice change of storytelling style. I understand that some changes and cuts must be made in order to not have a 10 hour movie, however, a couple of these changes and cuts did hinder the storytelling of the movie. But, Okay, we have the teenage love scenes, the super special effects, and the best selling book to support the film. But we also have a dull scenario filled with stupid dialogues and a lot of added things that weren't really needed. But, it's not so bad. The opening scene, the Harry-Luna on the train scene, the cave scene, the Katie Bell scene, etc, etc. All of them were intriguing and greatly made. Ron ''love scenes'' were hilarious and I enjoyed watching them. What I didn't like is the fact that this is yet another HP movie that tells the book so - fast!!! One minute Harry's on the station, talking to Dumbled - oops, now he's convincing Slugho - oops, he's aboard the Hogwarts expr - oops, now we see Draco with the - oops, Dumbie is dead. Rare is the person who will understand the film without reading the book. ANd also, so many things that are important in the books were cut from the film, while some unnecessary scenes were added, such as the attack on the Burrow. What the hell was that?? All in all, just another brick in the wall. I mean, all in all, another HP film that focused more on the effects than on the script. I even prefer OotP to this movie. I'm not saying HP6(the movie, of course) is bad, it is good. It is a lot of fun and a real summer blockbuster and all. But, for the fans of the book, and the may-be future ones, it's another disappointment. Expand

Maybe that's why the teen romance was played up so strongly in the movie. The romance was more palatable than the written version but, as it was played for laughs, it did rather undercut the mood of a gathering storm so vividly portrayed in the opening scenes. (That said, you could have heard a pin drop during the last half hour.) I do feel this is best for people who know the books well. It's been such a long time since the last film that casual viewers won't be up to speed, and the nature of this book is such that it's really dependent on knowing what's happened before. I was with someone who has only seen a few of the films, read none of the books. He didn't know who was who, or why they were doing what they were doing. E.g., the scene in the Burrow with Lupin and Tonks was just dropped in and he had no idea who any of these people were or why they were there. I wish they had included more of Harry's grief over Sirius instead of the invented cafe scene. Also, the Half-Blood Prince angle was not well-handled. Film looked great and had some very good scenes, but on a narrative level, it was lacking. Also, I think they've made it more difficult for themselves to explain everything in the next 2. I'm starting to think these books are not really suited to film treatment - starting with #4, the don't really stand alone, which a feature film has to do. Expand

Half Blood Prince does some I'm not going to write a review criticizing the film for scenes being left out. I'm not a person bothered by that. I really enjoyed the 4th and 5th movies and didn't mind much at all the changes. Half Blood Prince does some things right. Dumbledore's FINALLY been correctly portrayed in the films, for one thing; took them a while, but this, finally, is book Dumbledore being brought to the screen. The movie also focuses on life at Hogwarts and the interactions of the trio, and I thought the movie got this right; easily better than any other films. The problem is that the movie's just a bit dull. The book was definitely the least substantial of the series and the one least loaded with crucial content but it HAD important content and it just felt like the filmmakers entirely missed the point of crucial scenes, cutting out lines of dialogue that had me scratching my head. I was left wondering, "without that bit of dialogue, what was the point of even including the scene?" The result is that most of the movie is mildly diverting, the flashbacks are VERY well done, and it's pleasant enough. But the movie just fails to build up to anything substantial; the book did, but the movie just seems to sputter at the end. The cave scene's pretty fantastic, but then they seem to cut away abruptly in the middle of what ends up being the movie's climactic scene, and I kept waiting for them to cut back, but they don't; the scene's over. And since they removed the final battle, the movie lacks a strong close. I wish the director would re-watch the 4th film to see how death was handled in that movie, because that was I think the one time this series really pulled the audience in emotionally and it hasn't happened since. And that's the problem. The movie doesn't feel substantial enough from a plot perspective. I saw the movie with people who hadn't read the book and they actually quite enjoyed it, so that's something good to be said. I think fans of the book, though, will be disappointed simply because we know how important this ending was, both to Harry and the future of the series, and I wish the filmmakers had taken more care to really make sure they ended the movie strongly...but their focus seemed to be elsewhere. More tears are shed over teen romance than the film's climactic death. The weakest film in the series, which is too bad, because David Yates is the one director who I feel really GETS the books and their "spirit" across; I just wish he didn't suck so much at action scenes and really wish he'd let the movie breathe a bit before the credits suddenly roll. The movie was great, it had humour and action and beautiful effects mixed into one great movie. The book which is pretty dark can be hard to get rhough, but this on the other hand was easy with aparts that make you laugh, scream or cry. Though it could be better with the adaption from the books. For many books now they've been making changes, like in the second movie they made the wagons to Hogwarts pulled by white horses, just for the effect. As the books have been reaching new lenghts they have had to cut down on more things and do more changes. Already in the 4th movie they made unforgivable changes that would make the last book hard to adapt to a movie, but they could still fix that in later movies. The 5th movie gave you a feeling that they were in a hurry to get all the scenes done, yet they skipped a lot and changed things too much. Again they also made an unforgivable change not that different from the one in the 4th movie, but I thought they could still fix it in this one. Well, they didn't, in fact they made it even worse by skipping the start making a lot of the things in the 6th movie impossible. Now it's too late to fix any of those things. For us fans who have read the books the movies can be frustrating, for those who haven't it can be confusing. I recommend for those who haven't read the books to do that to get an insight in what happens, and those who have read the books should remember the main story and think of this as a separate movie. It's really a great movie if you look away from the books. Expand

Half-Blood Prince is my favorite book and other than 7, the darkest book in the series. That being said, I was so dissapointed with this movie. Yates & company literally turned it into Harry Potter comedy hour. I'm not sure how anyone thought this movie was amazingly dark when the theater was cracking up laughing the entire time at trite jokes. The only thing that should have been funny in this entire movie was Lavender & Won Won's obsession to each other. What was the point of not having Tonks find Harry on the train? How can you have Tonks call Remus sweetie and not explain all the drama between them and how they got together? How can you leave out Madam Rosmerta's involvement? What was the point of the burning of the Burrow scene? The ending was horrific. It was completely different than the book. So now Dumbledore is the only one who can apparate on Hogwarts grounds? Malfoy spends all this time working on this cabinet only to have the Death Eaters walk through, Bellatrix (who is not present in the book) encourage him to kill Dumbledore, Snape kills Dumbledore, and they kindly saunter off the grounds in no hurry. No battle... no fear of being caught...nothing. What was the point of the cabinet in the movie? It was completely anti-climatic and they didn't even have the funeral scene which is a must-have. The worst part ever was the very end...Harry and Hermione are talking about Dumbledore's death and going searching for horcruxes and she randomly chimes in that Ron is OK with Ginny and Harry. WHAT?! It was so awkward. Why not just cut to another useless romance scene about who's kissing who! they messed it up so bad. and for someone who didn't read it, they'd probably be so confused. Expand

Definitely has the most humor of the films, but I think that perhaps the humor sort of takes over the whole film. This is a VERY dark time in the wizard world and most of the movie seems like everything is normal. That aside, good movie.

Worse actually because the chemistry that used to be between the cast is gone, the acting was stiff and unbalanced. The story had no tread, even if they didn't go by the books exactly they could have at least come up with a central storyline. It is a shame, why did they give David Yates all of these movies- the only one to his credit was girl in the cafe and that still was not fully realized. The only saving grace was visual effects which they brought someone else in to do. I only give it a 1 because of Jim Broadbent Expand

But the movies have been flavor for the books for awhile now, and this movie was great as a movie. The visuals were spot on, the acting was the best of the series, and the plot was pretty strong, (it is from a best selling book...) However with that said, it is a horrible telling of the book itself. Some things are flat out made up, others are ignored entirely or confused. I made the mistake of going to see book 6 on film, and was very disappointed. But I think that if I went to see a movie, having no predisposition to how it should go it would be pretty strong. They were, I liked #3 and #4 better, and would probably rate this evenly if not a little above #5. Though I was disappointed at the absence of certain scenes, notably the other pensieve memories, I can understand why they were not included. They were, after all, nonessential and I find it irritating to listen to all the disgruntled fans who expected the book to be translated word for word into movie form. It just can't be done. The movie was 2 and a half hours long as it was. Also, I was glad that the filmmakers saw fit to start off with Harry in the diner, as I can never stand watching the Dursleys. I simply don't find their screen time entertaining and was glad to be rid of them in this installment. One change I didn't quite understand was the addition of the burning of the burrow. It didn't feel all that necessary, and was a fairly large departure from the book. Some people complained that the comedic elements detracted from the darkness and the sense of a gathering storm, but for me it wasn't an issue. I found it entertaining, and probably could not have swallowed all the teen angst in any other format. Having read the books, I don't know whether the movie would have been difficult to follow without a preexisting mental framework of what's supposed to happen. The people I saw it with, however, had not read the books and seemed to have no problem following the plot. I can understand how the movie would be confusing if one had not seen its predecessors, but that's not anyone's fault. The books would be just as confusing if not a great deal more so if read out of order. So if you've only seen some of the previous movies and are complaining that the filmmakers did a poor job, then you are stupid. This is not a standalone movie, but rather the sixth in a series, and it's meant to be seen sixth. I'll also just quickly mention that the acting and the look of the movie were both beautiful. So, my general impression was that this was a competent, streamlined adaptation, that trimmed away the fat, but also lost a good chunk of that magical, engrossing feeling that the books so exemplified. Considering this flaw, I am quite looking forward to the two part finale, which will be able to explore the world of the books more completely than any of the other movies. Expand

Very few claps and cheers were heard at the end of the film as I'm sure it disappointed more of the audience than the critics apparently. My only hope is that the second movie of the 7th book will finally fulfill my desire to see just what these wizards are capable of. Expand

There was too much romance and not enough action, and what action it did have was not relative to the book and could have been much much better. It seems to me that the directors have not even read the Harry Potter stories. I know whenever a movie is based on a book it can't be strictly to the book or it will be much too long, but this crosses the line! I am appalled at the movies lack of accuracy to the book. And JK Rowling approves of it seems, she should be calling the shots on the casting and lines, if she doesn't she apparently doesn't care about her many loyal Harry Potter. Expand

Alan Rickman is excellent yet again as Snape and is given more room to play with the character as protector of Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) while Michael Gambon gives his best performance as Dumbledore yet. Humor is used throughout the movie well, with Rupert Grint's performance as Ron Weasley under the effect of a love potion being the crowning moment. As great as those elements are, new and more casual viewers will likely have more problems with the film. The plot is a bit confusing with the movie feeling a bit spastic at times, with a scene at the Weasly's home epitomizing the feeling as it devolves into a duel with death eaters without any setup and simply ends up feeling superfluous. The problem is compounded by the movie's focus on the romantic relationships feeling equal to it's focus on furthering plot of Harry's battle against the great dark wizard Voldemort. Those who have read the book will likely be disappointed about a couple of omissions, a few visits to Dumbledore's office which further explains Harry Potter's (Daniel Radcliffe) mission, Voldemort's back story, and in the process, the ring. Also omitted was a big fight scene at the end in Hogwarts, though this may have been the right call as it removes any delay in Harry's reaction to the climax. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is one part adventure and one part high-school drama and an enjoyable, if flawed, film. Expand

Although the movies could never live up to the perfection of JK Rowling's Original creation, this movie is as close as you can get in an adaptation. Great Job!

For me, there was only one problem with this picture, but it was a big one: the tone. How we are supposed to engage fully in a film that flits between danger and teen romance, it seems, every scene? (this is no fault of the film's- it's only following the strangely uneven book) Oh, and, apart from Watson's Hermione, none of the child actors can act! Worst of all is Radcliffe, who still seems to think looking stern passes for emotion. However, the film was fun, and the 153 minutes felt more like 2 hours, passing extremely quickly. The pacing of the film was very good, with the scenes feeling fresh and unrushed. The visual effects were as good as the third film's, and Broadbent was excellent as the Potions teacher, Horace Slughorn. But the real standout was Draco Malfoy, as played by Tom Felton. His subplot felt engaging; dark and full of menace. A decent addition to the franchise! Expand
