The saga thickens up.

This film is the adaptation of the sixth book in the Harry Potter saga, written by JK Rowling and was directed by David Yates. Always betting on the continuity of its main cast, as well as in the ability of its studios when it comes to special effects and computerization, Yates manages to make a great movie. The script also becomes increasingly complex and dense. The loves and crossed romances will increasingly join the central plot, and that will help to thickens it and make the film more and more adult and mature, deeper and psychologically challenging. The actors will also gaining more and more experience and maturity and will raise their performance to ever higher levels.

This film is one of the first where the audience gets to see the other side of some characters. So far, everything was very black and white, there were good guys and bad guys. Now it will no longer be so, with some of the characters to show gray sides of their personalities. The photograph will accompany all these changes, becoming increasingly cold and dark.

This is the inevitable kind of film that takes its time and prepares for the grand finale. An excellent penultimate chapter (even if, in this case, it is the antepenultimate).

It has some witty and intense scenes, quickly followed by an uneven plot, which is barely even explained in the movie. As an adaptation on the other hand, it didn't do that well. People that hadn't read the book were totally lost, and wondering what people's motivations were throughout the whole book. You miss out on key scenes and character development, basically leaving the 6th installment ending the same as the 5th one (except for you know what). Malfoy's subplot was the most engaging aspect of the movie, as it lets you see his frustration and anger, something really well portrayed by the young actor. Overall, the film is entertaining, but far from perfection as others have posted. 7 out of 10 (film). 4 out of 10 as adaptation. But still, better than that insulting film about glowing vampires. Wizards, witches: they grow up so fast these days, or rather, child actors, some of whom, like the three principal leads in "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince", are lucky enough to remain relevant on the other side of puberty. In the process, however, their sexual maturity can be an uncomfortable experience for some. One-time child actress Alyssa Milano, for example, just twelve when she played Samantha Micelli on the defunct ABC sitcom "Who's the Boss", could have been a daughter you'd be proud to call your own. Next thing you know, she's doing things in Anne Goursaud's "Embrace of the Vampire" that turns you on, but wait a minute, weren't we vicariously experiencing fatherhood through Tony Danza's eyes not so way back? All of nine years when she starred in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone", Bonnie Wright(playing Ron Weasley's little sister Ginny), ends up in a unexpectedly suggestive position with Daniel Radcliffe(just twelve in the 2001 Chris Columbus-directed film), which began as an innocent offer to tie the wizard's shoes. You can be like the Michael Rappaport character in Ted Demme's "Beautiful Girls", who says about the beautiful, young Marty(Natalie Portman), "If she can cut her own food, she's fair game," but such objectification borders on the amoral. In "Beautiful Girls", Willie Conway(Timothy Hutton) tells a friend, "I was jealous of a little kid on a bike, because he gets to be her age, and I'm this vile old man," but since his relationship with the girl remains platonic, the male viewer never gets to be that "vile old man", diegetically speaking. But in "The Half-Blood Prince", Wright is indeed subjected to the male gaze, and for added kink, her image is mastered through a virginal wizard's bespectacled eyes. Expand

The Good: The acting has improved in the younger cast members, and the older actors continue to shine. The romantic plotlines were done well and provided comic relief. The cinematography and musical score were excellent as usual. The Bad: The Good: The acting has improved in the younger cast members, and the older actors continue to shine. The romantic plotlines were done well and provided comic relief. The cinematography and musical score were excellent as usual. The Bad: Too many scenes from the book were omitted from the movie, many of which are crucial to the ongoing story. The Durseleys and Kreacher are completely left out. The appointment of Snape to his new post didn't feel nearly as shocking as it did in the book. The revelation of the Half-Blood Prince's true identity is reduced to little more than a throw-away line. The Bottom Line: If you're familiar with the books, you know that many of the events in HBP serve to set up even greater revelations in DH. I can't help but feel that this film didn't accomplish that feat. I'm left wondering how Harry will pursue his goal while not being given enough clues on the screen compared to what he was given on the page. If you're not familiar with the books, this film will probably seem a bit confusing to you as it hurries through some scenes and omits others. Still, what does survive the transition from page to screen is actually pretty enjoyable, which is why I gave it a rating of 7. Expand

The movie was dark just like how the book was, but the thing what i didn't like was that the story wasn't explained properly. The director cannot expect everyone to have read the book. I actually went with a friend who hasn't read the book, he was left fully confused i had to explain the story on the way back. In the previous movies they put only little things from the book and explained it well but here they have tried to put more story and failed to explain it. Even then there was some scenes which were very well taken. The background score could have been better, some parts would have been better if there was a music at the background, without being silent. The comedy was very good. What i think is that the movie would have been much better if they have put the climax fight from the book by removing some unwanted scenes which wasn't there in the book. There wasn't much magic or fight in the movie which my friend was expecting and it also failed to satisfy me by not showing the plots properly. Even though this movie lacks magic which the previous movies had one thing has improved a lot, the acting specially Dumbledore, when i watched the 4th movie i was very disappointed by his acting, instead of being calm and matured he was so jumpy and overactive but here he performed very well by bring out the real Dumbledore from the book. My suggestion for the movie makers would be to bring back John Williams, the music he composed for Prisoner of azkaban is one of the best composition i have ever heard. Overall it was fine. Expand

But, Okay, we have the teenage love scenes, the super special effects, and the best selling book to support the film. But we also have a dull scenario filled with stupid dialogues and a lot of added things that weren't really needed. But, it's not so bad. The opening scene, the Harry-Luna on the train scene, the cave scene, the Katie Bell scene, etc, etc. All of them were intriguing and greatly made. Ron ''love scenes'' were hilarious and I enjoyed watching them. What I didn't like is the fact that this is yet another HP movie that tells the book so - fast!!! One minute Harry's on the station, talking to Dumbled - oops, now he's convincing Slugho - oops, he's aboard the Hogwarts expr - oops, now we see Draco with the - oops, Dumbie is dead. Rare is the person who will understand the film without reading the book. ANd also, so many things that are important in the books were cut from the film, while some unnecessary scenes were added, such as the attack on the Burrow. What the hell was that?? All in all, just another brick in the wall. I mean, all in all, another HP film that focused more on the effects than on the script. I even prefer OotP to this movie. I'm not saying HP6(the movie, of course) is bad, it is good. It is a lot of fun and a real summer blockbuster and all. But, for the fans of the book, and the may-be future ones, it's another disappointment. Expand

The movie was great, it had humour and action and beautiful effects mixed into one great movie. The book which is pretty dark can be hard to get rhough, but this on the other hand was easy with aparts that make you laugh, scream or cry. Though it could be better with the adaption from the books. For many books now they've been making changes, like in the second movie they made the wagons to Hogwarts pulled by white horses, just for the effect. As the books have been reaching new lenghts they have had to cut down on more things and do more changes. Already in the 4th movie they made unforgivable changes that would make the last book hard to adapt to a movie, but they could still fix that in later movies. The 5th movie gave you a feeling that they were in a hurry to get all the scenes done, yet they skipped a lot and changed things too much. Again they also made an unforgivable change not that different from the one in the 4th movie, but I thought they could still fix it in this one. Well, they didn't, in fact they made it even worse by skipping the start making a lot of the things in the 6th movie impossible. Now it's too late to fix any of those things. For us fans who have read the books the movies can be frustrating, for those who haven't it can be confusing. I recommend for those who haven't read the books to do that to get an insight in what happens, and those who have read the books should remember the main story and think of this as a separate movie. It's really a great movie if you look away from the books. Expand

However this is by far the greatest success of Half-Blood Prince. Although it has cut some important memories and said little about the Horcruxes, the greater freedom in adapting that Kloves had ended up making this the best film in the saga (until he came Deathly Hallows, of course). Yates has also improved a LOT, and achieves good moments of humor and manages to emote in some scenes. The performances are very good this young. Radcliffe shows good comic timing, and Grint. And Emma Watson makes a beautiful performance here. The adult cast, as always, is wonderful. Alan Rickman, Michael Gambon, Helena Bonham Carter and Jim Broadbent are simply fantastic. We are introduced to a wizarding world that has accepted the return of Lord Voldemort, but also a world which is in turmoil. Attacks in regular human beings, or muggles, are in full swing from the Death Eaters, while Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) continues to seek answers and deal with the loss of another loved one, while still attending Hogwarts.
Things at the school are changing, Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) is more vigilant towards Harry, Snape (Alan Rickman) has become defence against the Dark Arts teacher and Professor Slughorn, played with a irritable brilliance by Jim Broadbent, is the new Potions master.
Harry comes across a book with the title of the film across it- Property of the Half-Blood Prince, and learns a few new things from the mysterious owner of the book.
The shift in tone for the sixth film sees a more talkative and slower film, and while I personally relish, it departs too much from the overall tone of the source material, everything seems like it is building to something bigger which we rarely see, with too much time being spent on developing irregular scenes rather than developing the story arc.
But alas, the performances are exceptional, especially from Alan Rickman, Michael Gambon and Jim Broadbent, they all share candid scenes with Harry which are simply electrifying. The scenes between Harry and Dumbledore in particular really show how far we have come and how close to the end we are.
But with all the talking going on, it is still visual marvel, when Harry and Dumbledore discover the intentions of Voldemort, their journey takes them to lakes involving fire and other magical presences, creating some spectacular scenes. But of course there is tragedy at every turn and this the most brutal yet, leaving a real hole in Harry’s life and is uphill battle to defeat Lord Voldemort.
Hagrid comments that storm is coming, and we best be ready when it does, and no truer words may have been spoken.

Yet, somehow it pulls if off surprisingly well, turning its slow and character-driven first half into an enjoyable diversion from the high stakes drama surrounding the looming presence of Voldemort. By the time the film finally jumps into the central battle of the series, director David Yates is able to deliver the goods with a thrilling, rousing, and powerful, climax that is smartly low-scale and content with being just a cog in the whole wheel. As a result, the Half-Blood Prince manages to take the story where Order of the Phoenix left off and set it up perfectly for the finale of this beloved series. Though not necessarily a great stand-alone work due to how much it relies upon the other films to have a story that makes any sense, it nonetheless works incredibly well in context, being one of the most pleasant and filled-with-wonder entries in the series since Prisoner of Azkaban changed the tone entirely.

For the first half of the film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince operates like a soap opera version of itself entitled Harry Potter and the Horny Teenagers. Will Ron finally wake up and make a move on Hermione? Oh poor Hermione, having to watch Ron kiss another girl! Oooo Harry is finally moving past that Asian girl whose named I do not know that they built up as a lover for him two films, only for her to stab him in the back last time. Of course it is Ginny though, those two are meant for each other! I wonder what will happen with that weird blonde girl though? Do I smell a second love triangle? In this game of musical chairs and hot potato that is teenage relationship, the Half-Blood Prince seems fully invested in divulging every single detail. Ironically, while this is exactly what I dislike about the series at times - too much focus on items that do not matter - it works here quite nicely. It is funny, cute, and oddly endearing as we watch them go through the works of teenage relationships. It is a reminder of their youth in the face of the horrors and challenges they must face in fighting Voldemort. As a brief calm before the storm that will come in the Deathly Hallows, the Half-Blood Prince makes this feel like the final summer before they all head off to college, likely to not see one another again. In this, the bittersweet and nostalgic charm is hard to deny as incredibly fun to watch.

By the time the film settles into its second half, the Half-Blood Prince makes good on the suggestions and hints regarding who the Half-Blood Prince could be with a tension-filled and atmospheric finale. As Dumbledore and Harry go into the cave, it feels like a last stand for an old gunslinger in a western and, as with that, it comes with every bit of the tension and anticipation. Featuring a chilling sequence of these humanoid creatures jumping out of the water and Dumbledore having to use fire against them, the scene is one with excellent production design and strong direction David Yates. After building up some tension regarding this locale and biding his time the whole film, Yates manages to make the whole wait worthwhile, while not over-exerting this film into becoming another grand battle between Voldemort and Harry. Instead, as a minor battle as part of the larger war, the Half-Blood Prince manages to be thrilling in its own right without stealing any thunder from the concluding journey. A poignant death and memorial sequence only furthers the film's accomplishments with powerful staging of the memorial and deeply compelling possibilities about where Snape's loyalty may in fact lie. Is he still a death-eater or is he working for the order as an informant? Smartly, the Half-Blood Prince leaves this mystery open, making the Deathly Hallows a film that is hard to not highly anticipate.

As always, the Half-Blood Prince is often quite beautiful look at with Yates' camera often finding truly stunning images, especially in the cave or in the aerial shot of the memorial. While this series is seriously milking those shots of the valley in the sunrise, it is hard to deny that it is not beautiful all the same. These Harry Potter films often use their special effects in the perfect way to create a beautiful shot and the Half-Blood Prince is no exception to that fact. Where the film falters, however, is often in the over-reliance on cuts. When Harry is attacked by the humanoid creatures in the cave, Yates' camera cuts repeatedly without moving Harry or actually showing anything. He just falls back, cuts, and then he is in a slightly different place an inch to the left. With about 10 cuts in a millisecond in this sequence, it is borderline headache-inducing. The same then occurs as Harry talks to Hermione in the castle with the camera desperately needing a fidget spinner to keep still. Spinning around, cutting, and changing angles

I very much desired to see all of Voldemort's past explained and illustrated on screen: how his mother and father were connected, the Gaunt family, the murder of the three Riddles (not even mentioned!), etc. The memories we did see on-screen were bare-boned; we did not get to hear about the shenanigans young Tom was up to on his beach trip, only that he was a highly disturbing child. The Slughorn story-line was carried out effectively, but I felt like so much was missing. There was no scene with Dumbledore and the Dursley (which would have been highly amusin on-screen), no acknowledgement of Harry's grief for Sirius (which was redolent in the beginning of the book), nor did we see him receive his inheritance of Kreacher. I felt this movie missed the whimsy, magic, and familiarity of the first five films. It was dark, and I don't say this to imply that it should be daffodils and sunshine. While the sixth book was the darkest yet of the series, it still maintained a level comfort, of consistency, of familiarity. There was gloom and doom and sorrow, yes, but was taking place in a settings most familiar. Immediately, I felt like the presentations of the locations did not stay true to the first movies. For instance, the inside of the Weasley house beared no resemblance to the interior was saw in movies 1-5. The sixth year's bedchamber also looked (felt?) different. Even the panned out view of Hogwarts against the expansive sky and the mountains did not have the same feel to it. I suppose it had a lot to do with the camera and lighting work. Even the usual lively castle accompaniments, such as Peeves and Nearly-Headless Nick, or even the daily grind of classes, homework, and studying, were no where to be found. The one light-hearted departure from the gloomy affair of the story-line was the over-done teenage romantic adventures. Even the music was missing character and familiarity. When there was not silence behind the dialogue and action, long chords droned, void of variations on old themes and presentation of new. Still, it did cover the main bullet points of the film and stayed "true" to the book about as well as the other movies. Expand

So I was looking forward seeing this one, especially since trailers and previews were so compelling. But now I wish there was more substance in addition to the visuals. Since it was a while since I read the book, when I left the theater my overall feeling was ", what happened to the plot?". They either shouldn't make it more action packed (while trimming most of romantic stuff) or turn it into a two-parter w/ a better developed story. Maybe it's just a clever ploy to make people buy extended edition DVD and books to try to make sense of the story? Expand

However, after much anticipation and sitting through the 2 and a half hours, I must say I was not impressed. Settings and mood were set beautifully by the lighting and dark scenes, but the movie left me aching for more... yes folks, I must say this movie did not live up to my expectations. The storyline focused way too much on the skittish love lives of the teens, and much of the interesting and important parts of the plot are left out (example: Majority of Tom Riddle's past). The movie definitely did start out with a bang, but slowly fizzled out in the end. The climatic battle that I expected was non-existent, as the struggle between good and evil became a petty effort of vandalism of Hogwarts, highlighted only by the dramatic death of Dumbledore. However, I must admit, some scenes did make me chuckle, but for the 6th installment of the Harry Potter movie, I didn't want watch it for giggles, but wanted a dark, plot moving installment. Order of the Phoenix left me thinking that you had to know the books in order to make sense of the story. David Yates and Richard Kloves have taken that to an extreme in this film. Large elements of the film make absolutely no sense whatsoever unless you've read the book. If you've read, then you can plug plot holes with what you know. Otherwise, all the characters seem to know things the audience is never clued into for the entire film. That's a cardinal sin in storytelling. Half Blood Prince does some I'm not going to write a review criticizing the film for scenes being left out. I'm not a person bothered by that. I really enjoyed the 4th and 5th movies and didn't mind much at all the changes. Half Blood Prince does some things right. Dumbledore's FINALLY been correctly portrayed in the films, for one thing; took them a while, but this, finally, is book Dumbledore being brought to the screen. The movie also focuses on life at Hogwarts and the interactions of the trio, and I thought the movie got this right; easily better than any other films. The problem is that the movie's just a bit dull. The book was definitely the least substantial of the series and the one least loaded with crucial content but it HAD important content and it just felt like the filmmakers entirely missed the point of crucial scenes, cutting out lines of dialogue that had me scratching my head. I was left wondering, "without that bit of dialogue, what was the point of even including the scene?" The result is that most of the movie is mildly diverting, the flashbacks are VERY well done, and it's pleasant enough. But the movie just fails to build up to anything substantial; the book did, but the movie just seems to sputter at the end. The cave scene's pretty fantastic, but then they seem to cut away abruptly in the middle of what ends up being the movie's climactic scene, and I kept waiting for them to cut back, but they don't; the scene's over. And since they removed the final battle, the movie lacks a strong close. I wish the director would re-watch the 4th film to see how death was handled in that movie, because that was I think the one time this series really pulled the audience in emotionally and it hasn't happened since. And that's the problem. The movie doesn't feel substantial enough from a plot perspective. I saw the movie with people who hadn't read the book and they actually quite enjoyed it, so that's something good to be said. I think fans of the book, though, will be disappointed simply because we know how important this ending was, both to Harry and the future of the series, and I wish the filmmakers had taken more care to really make sure they ended the movie strongly...but their focus seemed to be elsewhere. More tears are shed over teen romance than the film's climactic death. The weakest film in the series, which is too bad, because David Yates is the one director who I feel really GETS the books and their "spirit" across; I just wish he didn't suck so much at action scenes and really wish he'd let the movie breathe a bit before the credits suddenly roll. Alan Rickman is excellent yet again as Snape and is given more room to play with the character as protector of Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) while Michael Gambon gives his best performance as Dumbledore yet. Humor is used throughout the movie well, with Rupert Grint's performance as Ron Weasley under the effect of a love potion being the crowning moment. As great as those elements are, new and more casual viewers will likely have more problems with the film. The plot is a bit confusing with the movie feeling a bit spastic at times, with a scene at the Weasly's home epitomizing the feeling as it devolves into a duel with death eaters without any setup and simply ends up feeling superfluous. The problem is compounded by the movie's focus on the romantic relationships feeling equal to it's focus on furthering plot of Harry's battle against the great dark wizard Voldemort. Those who have read the book will likely be disappointed about a couple of omissions, a few visits to Dumbledore's office which further explains Harry Potter's (Daniel Radcliffe) mission, Voldemort's back story, and in the process, the ring. Also omitted was a big fight scene at the end in Hogwarts, though this may have been the right call as it removes any delay in Harry's reaction to the climax. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is one part adventure and one part high-school drama and an enjoyable, if flawed, film. Expand

For me, there was only one problem with this picture, but it was a big one: the tone. How we are supposed to engage fully in a film that flits between danger and teen romance, it seems, every scene? (this is no fault of the film's- it's only following the strangely uneven book) Oh, and, apart from Watson's Hermione, none of the child actors can act! Worst of all is Radcliffe, who still seems to think looking stern passes for emotion. However, the film was fun, and the 153 minutes felt more like 2 hours, passing extremely quickly. The pacing of the film was very good, with the scenes feeling fresh and unrushed. The visual effects were as good as the third film's, and Broadbent was excellent as the Potions teacher, Horace Slughorn. But the real standout was Draco Malfoy, as played by Tom Felton. His subplot felt engaging; dark and full of menace. A decent addition to the franchise! Expand

Although I was happy with the route that the series is taking, with the darker and more adult feel, I felt that the movie lacked pacing, and the transition from book to screen wasn't particularly a good one. HP6 (the book) contains a lot of description which did not translate well onto screen, and because of this, I found myself explaining a lot that was happening to my friends who had seen the previous movies, but had not read the book. I will say however, that the ending was particularly well done, and was almost exactly how I imagined it. The film was 2 and a half hours long, with the first two hours being mediocre at best, but with some genuinely funny scenes. Expand

Even in his days as a student Voldemort's character seems to be brimming with evil thoughts and machinations leaving no room for ambiguity as to the audience understanding his evil, though as I understand it he was actually likeable in the books. Likewise Ron's infatuation with the absurdly annoying and unattractive Lavender leaves no doubt in anyone's mind that Hermione is clearly the better choice. These decisions and others felt like the film-makers refused to believe that their audience had the mental capacity to understand character development or uncertainty. Every decision is made for you, and by now six movies into the franchise it is starting to get extremely annoying. This entry into the franchise, perhaps more than any other takes almost all of it's plays directly from the Hollywood playbook, making for a film that is anything but special. The acting, as usual, was thoroughly convincing and entertaining. But the wonderful cast is unfortunately mired in a film that suffers from poor pacing, editing, and a lack of cohesive vision. Expand

David Yate's Harry Potter is not magical anymore. The movie spins confusing romance between the 3 main protagonists and also focuses more on the violence of the scary Voldemort. This is not a franchise I was hoping to watch....

This movie left me with very mixed opinions. I am one of the Potter Freaks that read all the books, and I compare and contrast the book and the movie while I am viewing it for the first time. Since this is a review only on the film, though, I do not want start talking about what was missing and what did not need to be in the film. In the tradition of a Harry Potter film, it is long. Even with the length I was entertained throughout most of it, but like most lengthy films, it did have its moments that dragged on. Being a little on the let down side by the past two films, this one started out very promising. I personally felt the film started out at a high point, and just slowly kept falling down from this point and never seemed to get back up. It felt like the director did not know how to place things from the book into a movie to keep the movie going at a good pace the whole way through. Even the ending to the movie just did not seen as suspenseful as it should have been, which I will not spoil for the nine percent of people that still do not know what happened, but the movie spends so much time building up things that by the time you get to the end, you are not on the edge of your seat like you should be. This movie is visually stunning, though, and the quidditch scenes are definitely the best ones yet. Overall I felt like this movie was just a pit stop to get some silly teenage drama out of the way and get people prepared for what is to come in the next two films. The film was good, but was more on the forgettable side.

A vast improvement on the last movie, and yet it also manages to be utterly underwhelming.

Some great scenes and performances, but the pacing is almost slug like at times. Considering everything that has happened so far, it almost feels like watching a soap opera right after an action movie. The tone is a bit to calm for what is going on.

Overall:
While I thoroughly enjoyed the story and all the twists, it also was a bit boring and underwhelming, considering it's the sixth Harry Potter movie.

Leaving out major story arcs that led to the climatic battle scene, and then leaving out the battle scene itself was a major travesty to what should have made up at least one third of this movie. I was really looking forward to seeing that battle come to life on film. Secondly, the mystery and discovery of Voldemorts secret was poorly developed. I really believe these were the major arcs of the story that were sorely left out, leaving us watching a really different sort of adaption of the book that left a very unsatisfying ending. To those who think that adapting closely to major arcs of a book story and transferring it on film is challenging and therefore unfair to Yates, I say 'hogwash'. Peter Jackson and his crew did a great job with LOTR, I would rest my case with his example alone. Sure there were some, and I stress some liberties, but he did not digress from major plots of what were crucial to a satisfying ending to each film of that trilogy. To end with a positive note, watching these young actors grow up in this movie with all the teenage angst was enjoyable to watch. Hogwarts looked spectacular; and the adult actors were great to watch. I hope they can reclaim "the magic" in the final movies. Expand

However, we know the limitation of the screen adaptation process and understand the discrepancies. Having said that this sixth movie is DISAPPOINTING to say the least. They left out too many important details so that the movie is very different from the book rather than slightly different as the other movies are from their books. I am very unhappy and am re-reading Book Six to refresh my memory and fully enjoy the story. Please, I dearly hope the screen play for the last two movies will honor the seventh book with accuracy, dignity and completeness. This movie left me cold and wanting so much more. Bravo to J.K. Rowling for her brilliant writing and storytelling; please talk to the producer and director and urge them to produce a top-knotch companion to the last book. We all need a great job to be done; Harry and the other characters deserve no less, nor does Ms. Rowling. Expand
