No Dursleys, nor Gaunts. Instead they added extraneous material not in the book and for the most part wasn't worth the time.(Although I can understand the "No Elves" attitude. I don't expect Dobby or Kreacher in the last movies. And if they do show up, how will it make any sense considering their absence from the previous films?) No Ministry, no obvious evidence that the ministry is even doing anything remotely connected to opposing the Death Eaters. It was a relief to see Lupin and Tonks for all the brevity they gave the characters. Which was a shame considering the nice subplot they had in the book, which wasn't existent in the movie. Snape should have had more time for the buildup to what comes later. I have no doubt that when his death comes it will be as anticlimatic and unemotional as Dumbledore's was. The ending to this movie was just a disaster. Expand

Most of the From the perspective of someone who has neither read any of the books nor watched completely any of the other movies: HBP was a horrible movie and I hated it save for a few moments of levity. Mainly provided by Luna Lovegood. Most of the acting seemed off, especially the age of the actors compared to the characters was incredibly offputting - Daniel Radcliff looks like she should have a mortgage and a kid or two but is playing a high school senior-aged kid. The CG was used in lame pastiches and at unnecessary moments and featured nothing particularly impressive or imaginative to look at. By the end I was cheering for the Deatheaters, especially the always delightfully eccentric Helena Bonham-Carter. Expand

Parts were surprizingly funny, but most of the film dragged on and on, with barely any action, and almost no explanation for Snape, along with ruining the 'twist' reguarding Dumbledore. Acting was sub-par, but given the direction of the film, they did there best. Very average and overall quite disappointing. The last two better be better. Expand

Many story threads are botched so that the following movie will have nothing to pick up. The story line isn't going where Rowling takes it. The most important scenes--e.g., the battle after Dumbledore is killed and Harry and Ginny falling in love--aren't even included. Character development is nil--not just Harry and Ginny but Harry and Snape, Ron and Hermione, Fenrir Grayback, and McClaggen; the three principals spend much of their time standing around looking dumb like Bill Murray in Lost in Translation. The split is a remarkable comment on either devotion to Rowling's story development or the state of book adaptation in filmmaking today, a subject for debate elsewhere. A big fan of the written series and bigger fan of the Azkaban film I felt confused and a bit cheated when watching HBP. The trailers were edited to be much more engaging than the film turned out to be, the acting/dialog seemed off balance compared to previous stints turned in by all parties, and the unbelievable reconstruction of the action on the tower were mind-blowingly inconsistent and disappointing. I can only hope the DVD will be released with much more-true-to-the-book alternate scenes. Expand

Despite disappointing some cinema-goers with a total remove of the fun and playful magic seen in the earliest movies the film stays as close as it can to it's page-turning roots. The life and death of the later books are well reflected in this movies. With only some disappointments to the book-readers such as the anti climax "fight" at the end. Managing to retain most of the actors youthful appearances added to the atmosphere. This proves any doubters harry potter can still make a fantastic translation to the screen. Expand

This new movie, however, After finding out David Yates would return to direct, I was very worried that he would make another Order of the Pheonix type of film. Personally, i believe Order of the Pheonix is the weakest of the Harry Potters. This new movie, however, shocked me. It was incredible. Yates and the rest of the crew did a marvelous job delving into the heart of Draco Malfoy, who was my favorite character of this film, as they showed his hostile intentions, but also let the audience know that he is confused in where he stands. His soul is vulnerable, and the actor who portrayed him (Tom Felton) and the director did wonders to show such character development. The acting quality overall was much better than all the rest of the films, as i found myself cringe at line delivery in previous installments. Evanna Lynch and Tom Felton are the strongest however, as they get into character very well, and are very convincing. The hormone attacks in the story was well handled, but at times seemed somewhat worthless in regards to the plot, because once one event takes place, it isn't heard of again. The special effects were magnificent as well, because they weren't overused for show, and they weren't completely absent. Overall, this is the strongest in the series for me, because the characters are so well developed, and the presentation was well balanced and done nearly perfect. Expand

They were, I liked #3 and #4 better, and would probably rate this evenly if not a little above #5. Though I was disappointed at the absence of certain scenes, notably the other pensieve memories, I can understand why they were not included. They were, after all, nonessential and I find it irritating to listen to all the disgruntled fans who expected the book to be translated word for word into movie form. It just can't be done. The movie was 2 and a half hours long as it was. Also, I was glad that the filmmakers saw fit to start off with Harry in the diner, as I can never stand watching the Dursleys. I simply don't find their screen time entertaining and was glad to be rid of them in this installment. One change I didn't quite understand was the addition of the burning of the burrow. It didn't feel all that necessary, and was a fairly large departure from the book. Some people complained that the comedic elements detracted from the darkness and the sense of a gathering storm, but for me it wasn't an issue. I found it entertaining, and probably could not have swallowed all the teen angst in any other format. Having read the books, I don't know whether the movie would have been difficult to follow without a preexisting mental framework of what's supposed to happen. The people I saw it with, however, had not read the books and seemed to have no problem following the plot. I can understand how the movie would be confusing if one had not seen its predecessors, but that's not anyone's fault. The books would be just as confusing if not a great deal more so if read out of order. So if you've only seen some of the previous movies and are complaining that the filmmakers did a poor job, then you are stupid. This is not a standalone movie, but rather the sixth in a series, and it's meant to be seen sixth. I'll also just quickly mention that the acting and the look of the movie were both beautiful. So, my general impression was that this was a competent, streamlined adaptation, that trimmed away the fat, but also lost a good chunk of that magical, engrossing feeling that the books so exemplified. Considering this flaw, I am quite looking forward to the two part finale, which will be able to explore the world of the books more completely than any of the other movies. Expand

After the good third and fourth entries and the average fifth entry, This film did everything right. The film was comical in a sense and left the movie crowd laughing. Many things became the subject of jokes including the fact it has been eight years since the series began and yet the cast is to be in their late teenage years. One scene has Dumblerdore taking a magazine to pursue his sewing. Several items from previous items including Tom Riddle's diary and the map which monitors everyone's movements from the third film. The film however was dark like previous entries and had some grim situations. A major character dies which was depressing, yet realistic. It will most likely affect the next film in many ways. Their was a romantic kiss between Harry and Ron's sister Ginnie which was nice and assisted the film in small ways. The only major problem with the film was not a true confrontation between the Dark Lord and Harry which makes this the second film in which he does not appear. Overall an excellent entry which makes up for the weaknesses of the fifth film and defines the series in every way. Expand

Weak acting, weak action, weak story. Many important details were removed like the Hogwarts battle and Horcrux details and some unnecessary stuff added in like the cafe and the Burrow scene. Boot Yates out!

Half-Blood Prince is my favorite book and other than 7, the darkest book in the series. That being said, I was so dissapointed with this movie. Yates & company literally turned it into Harry Potter comedy hour. I'm not sure how anyone thought this movie was amazingly dark when the theater was cracking up laughing the entire time at trite jokes. The only thing that should have been funny in this entire movie was Lavender & Won Won's obsession to each other. What was the point of not having Tonks find Harry on the train? How can you have Tonks call Remus sweetie and not explain all the drama between them and how they got together? How can you leave out Madam Rosmerta's involvement? What was the point of the burning of the Burrow scene? The ending was horrific. It was completely different than the book. So now Dumbledore is the only one who can apparate on Hogwarts grounds? Malfoy spends all this time working on this cabinet only to have the Death Eaters walk through, Bellatrix (who is not present in the book) encourage him to kill Dumbledore, Snape kills Dumbledore, and they kindly saunter off the grounds in no hurry. No battle... no fear of being caught...nothing. What was the point of the cabinet in the movie? It was completely anti-climatic and they didn't even have the funeral scene which is a must-have. The worst part ever was the very end...Harry and Hermione are talking about Dumbledore's death and going searching for horcruxes and she randomly chimes in that Ron is OK with Ginny and Harry. WHAT?! It was so awkward. Why not just cut to another useless romance scene about who's kissing who! they messed it up so bad. and for someone who didn't read it, they'd probably be so confused. Expand

The movie was great, it had humour and action and beautiful effects mixed into one great movie. The book which is pretty dark can be hard to get rhough, but this on the other hand was easy with aparts that make you laugh, scream or cry. Though it could be better with the adaption from the books. For many books now they've been making changes, like in the second movie they made the wagons to Hogwarts pulled by white horses, just for the effect. As the books have been reaching new lenghts they have had to cut down on more things and do more changes. Already in the 4th movie they made unforgivable changes that would make the last book hard to adapt to a movie, but they could still fix that in later movies. The 5th movie gave you a feeling that they were in a hurry to get all the scenes done, yet they skipped a lot and changed things too much. Again they also made an unforgivable change not that different from the one in the 4th movie, but I thought they could still fix it in this one. Well, they didn't, in fact they made it even worse by skipping the start making a lot of the things in the 6th movie impossible. Now it's too late to fix any of those things. For us fans who have read the books the movies can be frustrating, for those who haven't it can be confusing. I recommend for those who haven't read the books to do that to get an insight in what happens, and those who have read the books should remember the main story and think of this as a separate movie. It's really a great movie if you look away from the books. Expand

If you have never seen the other films in this series you will need to do so to truly enjoy the movie. Mechanically speaking, the pace of the movie kept a good pace through out most of the film. The acting was in general very good. Special effects were first rate. Not a film to take small children like the boneheads at my showing. Based on what my wife told me, there was once again a large chunk of the book left out of the film, but she felt they covered the esssentials. As always, visually stunning, but the acting, for once, was solid and the writing was good. After all, the sixth book is more about setting up the 7th book than acting as an independent story (as was true with books 1-5). It was about as compelling a movie as could be made with this book. For those that complain about the plot and haven't read the books, well, it's kind of the same as watching the Two Towers in the Lord of the Rings... it brings the movie forward to the natural conclusion, but seen independently, it may leave you wondering what's going on. And for those who have read the books, there was simply too much to cover without making some major cuts, and there was a certain necessity to bring to do certain things in this movie. For instance, the Burrow gets burned down. Did it happen? No. Why did they do that? Because the 7th book is already two movies, and they have already cut the entire wedding of Bill and Fleur from these two films. The last 100 pages of the final book are so freakin' jam-packed, you could probably make a 3 hour film out of that. Not everything makes it to screen, and not everything is in the right place. That's part of moviemaking. That being said, it was excellently done, and close to the best in the Potter franchise (whether you've read the books or haven't). Expand

Horribly paced, and awkwardly edited with somehow disjointed dialogue, the film contains too few memorable scenes or set pieces, too much glossing over the main plot points, and too much focus on the ones that didn't matter. Even in his days as a student Voldemort's character seems to be brimming with evil thoughts and machinations leaving no room for ambiguity as to the audience understanding his evil, though as I understand it he was actually likeable in the books. Likewise Ron's infatuation with the absurdly annoying and unattractive Lavender leaves no doubt in anyone's mind that Hermione is clearly the better choice. These decisions and others felt like the film-makers refused to believe that their audience had the mental capacity to understand character development or uncertainty. Every decision is made for you, and by now six movies into the franchise it is starting to get extremely annoying. This entry into the franchise, perhaps more than any other takes almost all of it's plays directly from the Hollywood playbook, making for a film that is anything but special. The acting, as usual, was thoroughly convincing and entertaining. But the wonderful cast is unfortunately mired in a film that suffers from poor pacing, editing, and a lack of cohesive vision. Expand

Half Blood Prince does some I'm not going to write a review criticizing the film for scenes being left out. I'm not a person bothered by that. I really enjoyed the 4th and 5th movies and didn't mind much at all the changes. Half Blood Prince does some things right. Dumbledore's FINALLY been correctly portrayed in the films, for one thing; took them a while, but this, finally, is book Dumbledore being brought to the screen. The movie also focuses on life at Hogwarts and the interactions of the trio, and I thought the movie got this right; easily better than any other films. The problem is that the movie's just a bit dull. The book was definitely the least substantial of the series and the one least loaded with crucial content but it HAD important content and it just felt like the filmmakers entirely missed the point of crucial scenes, cutting out lines of dialogue that had me scratching my head. I was left wondering, "without that bit of dialogue, what was the point of even including the scene?" The result is that most of the movie is mildly diverting, the flashbacks are VERY well done, and it's pleasant enough. But the movie just fails to build up to anything substantial; the book did, but the movie just seems to sputter at the end. The cave scene's pretty fantastic, but then they seem to cut away abruptly in the middle of what ends up being the movie's climactic scene, and I kept waiting for them to cut back, but they don't; the scene's over. And since they removed the final battle, the movie lacks a strong close. I wish the director would re-watch the 4th film to see how death was handled in that movie, because that was I think the one time this series really pulled the audience in emotionally and it hasn't happened since. And that's the problem. The movie doesn't feel substantial enough from a plot perspective. I saw the movie with people who hadn't read the book and they actually quite enjoyed it, so that's something good to be said. I think fans of the book, though, will be disappointed simply because we know how important this ending was, both to Harry and the future of the series, and I wish the filmmakers had taken more care to really make sure they ended the movie strongly...but their focus seemed to be elsewhere. More tears are shed over teen romance than the film's climactic death. The weakest film in the series, which is too bad, because David Yates is the one director who I feel really GETS the books and their "spirit" across; I just wish he didn't suck so much at action scenes and really wish he'd let the movie breathe a bit before the credits suddenly roll. I have read all the books within days of their release and dutifully attended each movie upon release. The first two were rather disappointing due entirely to the dearth of acting talent from the young stars (and who could blame the kids, it's hard to find a Haley Joel Osment). But then, starting with part three, the movies began to improve, markedly. The feeling of improvement only added to the excitement of each new release -- maybe the studios would do the book justice this time. And with movies four and five they finally succeeded, even more so with five. And so, I had come to expect something event worthy, even stunning when I bought my ticket for the Half-Blood Prince. To my disappointment, and this time to no fault of the young actors (who've earned their roles), the movie meandered and overemphasized and fell back on tired tricks and worn cinematic habits. Scenes went unsubscribed -- the opening where muggles are in awe of a world inexplicably turned upside down -- and plot points are brushed over to make room for more adolescent drama than a season of Dawson's Creek. In fact, the whole thing felt like a TV miniseries instead of a movie -- which makes sense wince David Yates was plucked from the TV biz. And, to ad insult to injury, they massacred the ending, though I won't spoil it. What a shame. Let's hope Yates puts down the Lolita and rereads the source before taking on the final two installments. Expand

Leaving out major story arcs that led to the climatic battle scene, and then leaving out the battle scene itself was a major travesty to what should have made up at least one third of this movie. I was really looking forward to seeing that battle come to life on film. Secondly, the mystery and discovery of Voldemorts secret was poorly developed. I really believe these were the major arcs of the story that were sorely left out, leaving us watching a really different sort of adaption of the book that left a very unsatisfying ending. To those who think that adapting closely to major arcs of a book story and transferring it on film is challenging and therefore unfair to Yates, I say 'hogwash'. Peter Jackson and his crew did a great job with LOTR, I would rest my case with his example alone. Sure there were some, and I stress some liberties, but he did not digress from major plots of what were crucial to a satisfying ending to each film of that trilogy. To end with a positive note, watching these young actors grow up in this movie with all the teenage angst was enjoyable to watch. Hogwarts looked spectacular; and the adult actors were great to watch. I hope they can reclaim "the magic" in the final movies. Expand

How they were allowed to release a film such as this is a mystery. As diluted as the plot is, you still recognise it as something vaguely to do with harry potter until halfway through the film when you think of any generic action film with bland actors in and cg artists with a bloated sense of self importance. The only good thing was it was shiny enough to distract me from the first few atrocities and some suprises like tom felton out acting most of them by seeming halfway genuine. The way he acted, im glad that michael gambon (dumbledore) has nothing more to do with the series, as no doubt the post death scene will be cut from the 7th films. Expand

Maybe that's why the teen romance was played up so strongly in the movie. The romance was more palatable than the written version but, as it was played for laughs, it did rather undercut the mood of a gathering storm so vividly portrayed in the opening scenes. (That said, you could have heard a pin drop during the last half hour.) I do feel this is best for people who know the books well. It's been such a long time since the last film that casual viewers won't be up to speed, and the nature of this book is such that it's really dependent on knowing what's happened before. I was with someone who has only seen a few of the films, read none of the books. He didn't know who was who, or why they were doing what they were doing. E.g., the scene in the Burrow with Lupin and Tonks was just dropped in and he had no idea who any of these people were or why they were there. I wish they had included more of Harry's grief over Sirius instead of the invented cafe scene. Also, the Half-Blood Prince angle was not well-handled. Film looked great and had some very good scenes, but on a narrative level, it was lacking. Also, I think they've made it more difficult for themselves to explain everything in the next 2. I'm starting to think these books are not really suited to film treatment - starting with #4, the don't really stand alone, which a feature film has to do. Expand

The film has a plethora of dazzling visual effects that make it rather rich and fun to watch, the cinematography is impeccable and should be nominated for a Golden Globe. Despite all this, the film, in its entirety, is remarkably...stale.

And how you give a good review to a movie that does this is beyond me. I'm so sick of hearing how good the cinematography is on this. There was WAY too much obvious green screen footage where the actors looked pasted in. That, plus all the silver filtering made the whole thing look like the movie 300 instead of a HP movie. This is the worst HP movie by a mile. They completely copped out on the ending, just ignoring the whole Death Eater battle which was the CLIMAX of the Book. Expand

Most people seem to say that if you haven't read the book you won't really understand the plot but I understood it just fine and I haven't read any of the Harry Potter series. The movie overall was very balanced. Great acting, CGI, emotion and atmosphere make this something for everyone. Expand

This was my favorite book, and worst Harry Potter film. The Harry potter films have been going downhill. They need Chris Columbus and John Williams.

If I had not been such a Harry Potter fan I would have probably enjoyed it a little more. I understand that some changes and cuts must be made in order to not have a 10 hour movie, however, a couple of these changes and cuts did hinder the storytelling of the movie. The way the book presented some of the information led to a much bigger shock and greater suspense and sense of mystery throughout. Except for those couple alterations, the movie was otherwise a masterpiece. I highly recommend it to Potter fans and non-Potter fans alike. Expand

This is largely because it is the most character driven film of the Potter series and also because of the more mature treatment of the characters, dialogue and themes. As opposed to the other films where scenes exist mostly to drive the plot forward and justify the special effects budget, Half-Blood Prince has several well-written, charming, dramatic and genuinely funny scenes. The characters deal with issues of love, responsibility and sacrifice, and behave more like real people than their usual cute, predictable Potter archetypes. Also, this film is dark. Quite dark. The Potter films have gotten progressively more and more serious as the film series has gone on and this one easily tops them all. This goes for the plot and themes, as well as the look. Great film and great fun. See it. Now. Expand

Paced well and beautiful to watch. Yates was able to be much more subtle this time, with many moments (such as Slughorn's memories of a gift given him by Lily Potter) superbly written and well acted. A word to you Potter purists who are complaining because your favorite bits from the book were omitted- the movie was 157 minutes long even without adding Voldemort's backstory or James Potter's cruelty to a young Severus Snape.
