If I could I'd rate it 10 1/2 but I cant so... Anyways Halloween is the best horror movie ever. Almost everyone of its sequels is good and it started the 80's slasher genre. It is something you have to see if you havent already seen it.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good horror movie but most are tripe to me and I think the bar for good horror was definitely lowered somewhere around the release of this film and Texas Chainsaw Massacre in the 70s. At that point they realized they could throw off all the Hitchcockian pretentions of character development and plot because your average schmuck will froth at the mouth over an hour and a half of braindead silence with intermittent kills. Ones that don't even make sense, like pinning a guy to a wall with a knife hardly long enough to make it through the other side of him (yet in the shot this is show most of the blade didn't enter him so it magically grew to 2 feet in length). I can forgive liking this film if you grew up with it or like to think like everyone else, but if you have any more of a quality filter than that it's not a great time, even in October... It's so long, plodding, and boring. Hardly any Halloween atmosphere at all.

The music gets old reaaaaal fast. If it wasn't so overused it may have worked better, but it became almost comedic how any time a car moved with Michael in it or any time he would move even off screen the music would start again. He's like a human ice cream truck I guess.

The final 10 minutes of the film are the only actually suspenseful or eerie part, unless being set in the 70s automatically makes a film feel eerie to you. The entire thing could've been distilled into a pretty good 30 minute spooky story, but in no way shape or form deserves the praise it has garnered and the endless spinoff of cookie cutter sequels. I'm all for mindless fun but this film is just mindless and no fun, and just seems like the start of the era of puritanical propaganda where the teens who drink, smoke, and have sex die while the good girls survive. Meh. Go ahead and downvote me to hell. I don't care. I'll get back up again. >:D

Halloween really is a true classic of its genre, it is genuinely scary, taut and is pretty much the only movie of the franchise in my opinion that is not only truly effective after all this time but also where everything works.

Halloween is very well made for starters, with atmospheric lighting and camera angles definite things to like. The score is resolutely haunting, the story is tightly paced and compelling, John Carpenter's direction is superb with some inspired, efficient techniques and while I have heard better the dialogue is good enough with some sharpness and nothing really that stands out as too cheesy or stilted.

The acting is very good, and the characters especially Michael Myers are iconic. Jamie Lee Curtis is more than just a pretty face, her acting seems very genuine and she gives her character welcome gravitas. Donald Pleasance is excellent too, while Michael Myers as a character is the personification of terror.

Halloween also works so well because of its atmosphere. It doesn't rely on excessive and cheap gore to make its point, or frenzied camera angles and the like. What it has is real suspense and genuine jolts especially in the last twenty minutes.

All in all, a true classic. 10/10 Bethany Cox

The film, which should be targeted by every slasher coming out after. It's hard to overstate Halloween's impact on modern cinema. And all this filmed literally for several tens of thousands of dollars. Carpenter featured one of Michael Myers' most famous and frightening serial killers. The film has a superbly choreographed suspense that clearly gives away references to Hitchcock and his film Psycho. Well, you just feel the connection of these 2 films. And of course, the soundtrack is so simple in its sound but memorable. Halloween can be advised to watch everyone, this is a classic of cinema. Moreover, it is recommended to watch it for the modern generation, which did not see good slashers in a modern cinema. Expand

* üç yüz bin dolar'lık bütçenin yarısı panavision kameralarına harcandı, böylece film 2.35: 1 dürbününe sahip olacaktı. donald pleasence'a beş günlük çalışma için yirmi bin dolar ödendi.

The masked Michael Myers chases his victims, however, it's just different here. I just have a soft spot for old horror movies and older movies in general. From a horror perspective, no one is likely to be scared with this film today, although I did get scared once here. What I did like about the film though was the overall atmosphere. The opening scene was very well done in my opinion, and the film caught my attention right away. Add to that the intro with the excellent music that plays several times here. I would more or less describe it in simplicity is beauty. No master plot. Just a 70's horror chase. I do see a kind of charm in it though, and I liked it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. John Carpenter shows his exquisite writing and directing skills through suspenseful music that is strategically incorporated to inflict more fear among audiences and the original theme of the widely known Halloween 1978 horror movie. The story is based on a psychopath who is placed in a mental hospital for murdering his older sister at 6 years old. Michael Myers (Tony Moran) has no communication with the outside world for years until he escapes from the only place that was protecting the town of Haddonfield from his wrath. The story begins in a small, seemingly lifeless town on Halloween, with Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis) talking to Tommy (Brian Andrews) about babysitting on Halloween night. The scene switches to Loomis (Donald Pleasance) driving to check in on Myers at the sanitarium. That is when Myers makes his daring escape and jostles Marion (Nancy Stevens) out of the passenger seat and steals the car Loomis was driving. He reverts to his hometown, Haddonfield. Carpenter creates a horror movie unlike any other through sound direction, camera angles, dramatic irony, and the never-ending suspense. When Myers finds his victims, he stalks them and waits until the perfect moment to kill. His laggard walks and sound direction play a huge role in creating suspense during these moments. The audience knows when Myers is near when the victim doesn't because of the strategically directed sound. Annie (Nancy Kyes) goes inside to get the keys for her car and comes back and the door is unlocked, she realizes she isn't alone, she hesitates, and the discordant music starts to play. When Annie least excepted it, Myers appeared from the backseat and killed her. Although the characters don’t know Myers is near, viewers do because of the sound direction. This is how Carpenter uses the direction of sound to create dramatic irony and intense levels of stress and suspense. The theme in Halloween is not one that many would suspect to be a theme in a horror story. As a result, Carpenter creates a movie that is unique and original. The dangers of intercourse, specifically premarital, is one of the widely known themes presented in carpenters movie. The opening scene of the movie shows Myers killing his older sister that wouldn’t pay any attention to him when she was with her boyfriend. The story's message continues to unfold through these actions of the characters. Myers kills Annie because she used babysitting to drink and sneak out with her boyfriend. After, the Loomis's come home to an empty house with Annie and their child gone. They then go to their bedroom. Bob goes downstair to retrieve more alcohol and he is killed by Myers. Myers puts a sheet over himself and tricks Lynda into thinking Bob is playing a prank on her. Lynda realizes it is not her husband under the sheet, but then it is too late. The significance of Tony Moran's character killing these victims exhibits the dangers of intercourse as most of the characters die while engaging. The movie continues and Myers stalks and psychologically tortures the main character Laurie, who is his greater focus. Shes the only survivor and the only character that does her job and does not make costly decisions. The movie ends on a cliff hanger, but it is petrifying and unexpected. Dr Loomis saves Laurie from Myers' grasp. They push him off the balcony and he drops to his “death”. The camera angle switches to a relieved Dr. Loomis and Lauries traumatized face. Then it switches back to the ground below the balcony, Myers is not there. That is when they realize he can't be killed, and the relief quickly turns to horror. Expand
