Thelma Schoonemaker's masterful editing doesn't make up for a story that gets extremely repetitive and boring in the second part. Definitely unpleasant characters. The violence in this film is never measured and finalized but always over the top for the sole purpose of entertaining the audience. The movie remains full of skilled directing but it turns out to be a barely watchable movie for my tastes. Expand

But the film itself is totally an unexpected wake up call for the beginnging of the 90s decade. the decade starts out with a knock in the head. since 80s decade ended with the untouchables, wich was a superb masterpiece by the way. although for some reason they dont have it on metacritic? a little odd to me, but o well. then it went to the shawshank redemption which was probably the best film i've seen since the godfather part 2. until the crappy prequel the godfather part 3 came out, what a waste of filmmaking. what else is there to add. but goodfellas on the otehr hand was pure beautiful excellent poetry written from scorsese's hand himself. the film is unforgettable. then when casino came out, joe pesci went extremely +78% over the top. but nothing matches to this mob movie. sure its flaws are simple, but the movie is great to watch on television. although you may not like it the first time you watch it. (which is when you see it on TV.) and you think, "this film is way overrated." but once you buy it a month later, the front cover looks so cool and when you watch it the second time, your face is solid rock and you can't even move your head or your eyes. you're so appealed. and thats the reason why i gave it an 8. its because it was one of the most appealing movies i have ever seen. and im not just saying that to make you watch it and think, "what was this user thinking?" No. this film will keep electrified until the credits roll up and says: Directed by martin Scorsese. then you say wow. Expand

No doubt Goodfellas is a film with good actors, some of which play characters which seems to be written for them. There is Joe Pesci for example, who plays a most hateful gangster. He is the kind of man that pumps another man full of leadNo doubt Goodfellas is a film with good actors, some of which play characters which seems to be written for them. There is Joe Pesci for example, who plays a most hateful gangster. He is the kind of man that pumps another man full of lead because it is funny to see him twitch. A sociopath you want to be far away from you as he can be. Preferable in hell or something where he and his kind belongs.

Goodfellas oozes crime, deceit and violence. The main guy is played by Ray Liotta whom I find hard to like because he looks at you with a creepy stare. There is Robert de Niro, who plays Robert de Niro very well, and makes me feel uneasy by the slick manner that lays as a thin veneer over his violent nature. Non of the characters actually endear: they are nasty people who cause grief and this makes the movie so hard to like.

The key to the world of mobsters is that there is no save ground. You are in constant fear for your live or from the law. It is a eat or be eaten world. In the end it is the choice that Liotta faces: deliver yourself to the one or the other. One means death, the other means prison, another kind of death. Liotta gets away, but he doesn't seem to be happy with it. Yeah, it sucks to be a nobody. That his wife divorces him after 25 years of marriage might say something or nothing at all. She was as wacky as he was.

The events make for a good movie with a good story perhaps, but also a very unlikable movie which I wouldn't have watched if I had known. Perhaps this is a kind of revision of the Godfather that actually makes some of these criminals to likable. Perhaps Scorsese wanted to correct this by making a gangster movie with lurid abject people you can't really connect with. If that was the purpose he succeeded very well indeed.

It received five Oscar nominations and a winner for Best Supporting Actor for Joe Pesci. It's speechless for how great this movie was and it still is. GoodFellas is a fantastic crime drama and it's impeccably done throughout. The story is based on a true story ad it's taken place from 1955 to 1980. It tells a story about Henry Hill played by Ray Liotta narrating about his life as a gangster. Lorraine Bracco sometimes narrates as Karen Hill, aside from that, Ray Liotta does all the narrating. It's in the book. It's in the non-fiction book by Nicholas Pileggi called Wiseguy. Of course, everyone knows the scene where Henry tells Tommy that he is funny cause the way he tells stories and Tommy says "What do you mean I'm funny?" "Funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you?" This is a famous scene for Joe Pesci as his acting is incredible. As far as this film goes, this is a perfect film for everyone who is a huge fan of Martin Scorsese. It has a great story that is so true, fantastic Oscar winning acting by everyone who played great characters and best direction from Martin Scorsese. It's everyone's favourite film of all time and considered one of the greatest films of all time. Never rat on your friends, and always keep your mouth shut. Expand

However, it has problems of rhythm and connection with the viewer, there are moments that I don't care about the protagonists status.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Metacritic won't let me post my full review. So here is what it accepts:
I'll start with the scenario which is terrific even if its skeleton truly is unoriginal (classic rise and fall story). The way we follow Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) and his progression in the mafia is excellent. Special mention for the inclusion of his wife Karen (Lorraine Bracco) in the narration. This an amazing biography in which we gather informations about Henry's nuclear family, his intentions and projects, his routine, his evolution and love stories. I think I could blame the movie not to be psychological enough as Henry only acts by fear or by duty, never with thoughts. We don't know anything about his values and psyche. And it goes the same way for each and every character.
I really love the way the movie is addressing the passion and unhealthy interest of the overall audience in crime and easy money (as it is obviously still the case). I like its morale. I like its ending.

Robert De Niro and Paul Sorvino's acting skills are top notch. On the other hand, I don't get at all why Joe Pesci (playing as Tommy DeVito) owned a Oscar for his role. I mean his character definitely is impressive, but I can't say the same about his particular performance. I have the same opinion for Ray Liotta's acting which only shines in brief moments.

The pace of the movie is weird. There are long, meaningless scenes, counterbalanced by fast-paced plans explanations. It quickly becomes confusing to identify which character does what and why. There are so many characters on screen it is hard to sort them. Plus many of them don't have an important role at all.

The soundtrack obviously is as evocative as finely used.
Shots are wonderful, especially the one in the restaurant as well as many others. Staging is grandiose, impeccable. Lighting is gorgeous too.
The length of 'Goodfellas' is one of the main dark point of it. Of course you can introduce numerous characters. Of course you can produce numerous events during such a long on-screen time. But there are too many useless scenes in my opinion. It could have been shortened. And maybe it should have been.
RIP Ray Liotta

Several of Scorsese's efforts are considerable works of art themselves (Taxi Driver chief among these "other" efforts), but with GoodFellas the director achieves a platonic balance - the film is stylish and enjoyable while also being gritty and disorienting. There is violence, profanity and moral darkness, yet the experience goes down smoothly and enjoyably. Few directors can make the sinister and even the brutally horrific seem palatable, or even alluring in the way Scorsese can. The performances, in particular by Joe Pesci as the hotheaded Tommy, are uniformly wonderful, with each actor perfectly suited to their parts. The cinematography is similarly peerless, while the accompanying soundtrack makes for the perfect background for the unrelenting narrative. Very few films truly deserve the title of "masterpiece," but this deathlessly popular and deservedly well-respected saga is as worthy as any film made of such a label; it serves as a potent reminder that, when in the hands of an artist who truly understands his craft and is able to forge an empathic link to their audience, film can be a transcendent and ravishing medium where art can gracefully meet commerce. GoodFellas is a modern, big budget picture with the verve of an old Hollywood studio classic mixed with the insight and craft of an arthouse staple. It's not to be missed. Expand

One of the best mob films ever made. It's very accurate in how it portrays the real events it depicts. You know it's good, the critics know it's good, I know it's good, so it's good. It deserves every bit of praise it gets.

Goodfellas: A Real-Life Drama Unveiling an Engrossing Tale Beyond Fiction - The Apex of Cinematic Excellence"
As a lifelong movie buff, I have journeyed through tales woven by cinematic geniuses, from Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" to Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" and David Fincher's "Fight Club." Each of these narratives, while grounded in audacious fiction, left indelible marks on my cinematic memory. But none could quite surpass the experience offered by Martin Scorsese's magnum opus, "Goodfellas." A testament to the adage that fact can be stranger than fiction, Goodfellas not only mesmerized me but also reshaped my understanding of the power of storytelling.

While Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather" is hailed as the greatest film of all time, for me, "Goodfellas" ascends a step further. Beyond just being a film, it's an immersive experience, creating a world so compelling that one doesn't simply watch, but rather, becomes a part of it.

"Goodfellas" is no mere movie. It is a high-octane ride through the treacherous, yet intoxicating underbelly of the mafia. Scorsese adapts Nicholas Pileggi's novel, "Wiseguy," to present a gripping narrative rooted in reality, thus proving that a true story, when well-told, can be as, if not more, captivating than fictional works.

The dialogues of the film are a tour de force - memorable, impactful, and infinitely quotable. They're a powerful testament to Scorsese's skillful storytelling, etching themselves into your memory and sparking conversation years after you've left the cinema.

The cinematography is nothing short of masterful. Each shot, each angle, each frame serves a purpose, painting a vivid picture of a world not many of us know, but are nevertheless intrigued by. Scorsese takes you on a visual journey that's as captivating as it is unsettling.

At the heart of "Goodfellas" is Joe Pesci's electrifying performance as Tommy DeVito, for which he earned a well-deserved Oscar. His ten-second acceptance speech at the Academy Awards stands as a symbol of his raw and pure talent - no frills needed. Pesci's portrayal of DeVito is arguably one of the greatest performances in film history, embodying a character so complex and volatile, it's impossible to look away.

The pacing of "Goodfellas" is a masterclass in filmmaking. There's never a dull moment as Scorsese expertly navigates through decades of organized crime, maintaining the narrative tension throughout. The movie flows like a torrential river, carrying its audience through a whirlwind of emotions.

Complementing the visuals and narrative is the incredible soundtrack that pulsates through every scene, enhancing the emotional landscape of the characters. From the adrenaline rush of the criminal high life to the unnerving paranoia induced by overindulgence in drugs, the music adds a layer of authenticity that amplifies the cinematic experience.

"Goodfellas," in essence, is a cinematic tour de force, a triumph in storytelling that pushes the boundaries of film, and the #1 movie in my list. Its influence stretches far, inspiring masterpieces such as "The Sopranos." Yet, it stands tall in its uniqueness, a beacon of filmmaking that reminds us why we fall in love with movies.
