David Fincher proves again to be one of the best still directing today and this movie based on a novel sure does show that. With a great soundtrack, a eerie feel, and its long run time, Gone Girl is one movie you must see this fall. With its great cast and plot development you can still be stunned by the storyline itself. Despite some sex scenes, the movie is very profitable on how it uses character dynamics and other features that make movies great. This is one of the best I have seen this year...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Way too much plot twists and a short lived mystery. You get the real twist by the half of the movie. You'd think it would just unfold but then you're caught amidst a maze of incoherent surreal turns of events. Many loose ends! After a slow start, I laughed out loud throughout most of the film. I thought Rosamund Pike was perfect, managing to show us both an inner and outer “Amazing Amy.” Although I felt Ben Affleck did a great job, he was more sympathetic because his back story (his relationship with his mother and so his complete personality) was omitted. Since the author of the novel wrote the screenplay, perhaps she changed her mind. Nick is no better than Amy in the book, but somehow he came out more sympathetic in the movie. They are, after all, the perfect couple – they deserve each other. The rest of the cast was great, and David Fincher came through again (I am a fan). I look forward to buying the DVD and savoring this film over and over. I didn’t initially like “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” but appreciate its artistry and craft more each time I watch it. I expect to enjoy this film many more times too. Expand

I don't read very much, so normally I don't read the books of a movie before I see it. However, the film's premise intrigued me so much that I decided to read the book a couple weeks prior to seeing this. And after watching this film, I'm very glad I read the book first, since the film remained extremely faithful to it. Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike each give without a doubt career-best performances! The film sets the same ominous and mysterious tone the book created so well. And of course, David Fincher's brilliant directing also made this film amazing. I was fully intrigued from start to finish, just like I have been with every one of Fincher's films. Aside from what I felt to be a slightly underwhelming ending compared to how the book ended it, I couldn't recommend this film any higher! Definitely check it out if you loved the book or are a fan of David Fincher. Expand

“Everyone told us and told us, marriage is hard work”.

Gone Girl is the one film that will embed itself permanently in your psyche. A bold statement, to say the least, but it is the only statement that comes close to describing the frightening physiological paradigm created by suspense maestro Divid Fincher. Emotionally charged, disturbed and at times simply terrifying, Fincher’s analysis of what can go wrong with contemporary marriage is the ultimate battle of the sexes and search for answers; whether right, wrong, or completely unexpected.

An adaption of the widely sought-after 2012 novel by Gillian Flynn, Gone Girl paints a bloody portrait of battle between husband and wife Nick and Amy Dunne (Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike) that asks the question asked by many who’ve had a relationship fall apart before their eyes: how much do you really know about your partner?

Contrary to its appearance courtesy of the narratively manipulating and heavily contrived editing and fragmented storytelling, the real issues in Nick and Amy’s marriage begin long before either of them even meet. Amy, who is introduced as the atypical yet very real trust-fund baby, lives most of her life steps behind her fictional alter-ego “Amazing Amy”, a character in a children’s series authored by her parents, Rand and Marybeth Elliot (David Clennon and Lisa Banes). Nick (Affleck) may very well portray himself as the perfect man. A writer for a men’s magazine, Nick finds himself at a yuppie party in the lower-east side of Manhattan before bumping into Amy, where he charms his way into her heart by confessing how he thought quinoa was a type of fish. The two depart the party where Nick leads Amy behind a bakery, the air glistening with sugar flakes, until the moment he kisses the specs of refined white power off her lips, the two perfect lovers fall in love.

But like everything that seems too good too be true, their magic doesn’t last. Both suffering in their relationship from the failed American economy and Nick’s ailing mother, Nick must pick-up his picturesque wife and life in urban New York City, and relocate to his Mid-Western hometown of North Carthage, Missouri. With the passing of Nick’s mother and his father’s admittance to the local nursing home for treatment of his Alzheimer’s, the couple is burdened with financial woes, prompting Nick and his quick-mouthed twin sister Margo (the fantastic Carrie Coon) to open a bar, perfectly named ‘The Bar’. Coming home to Amy for their fifth wedding anniversary, Nick drives into his perfect “McMansion” home and ideal wife, only to find the cat on the driveway, a wide opened front door, and Amy no-where in sight.

While many will spoil so much of what the film has to offer, it is best you go into it with a completely untainted opinion regardless if you’ve read the novel or not. Fincher and Flynn offer a completely revitalized reincarnation of Flynn’s novel with many layers, twists and turns, and most of all questions.

Fincher has given himself quite the reputation as a noble successor to Hitchcock, mastering the art of Hitchcockian thrillers and suspense. From Fight Club, to his highly stylized American interpretation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Fincher has become the most consistent American director working today. Staying true to his ominous and truly septic vision, faithfully collaborating with editor Kirk Baxter, cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth and music with Oscar winners Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor, Fincher is a meticulously relevant cinematic auteur who knows how to deliver in a tonal, visual, and deep subliminal forum that has quickly become his signature. Trying to ignore big set pieces, he goes to the most basic scenes in all films: two people seated in a room having a conversation. Fincher’s greatest cinematic tool is his focus on information, buried in the revelations between characters and their conflicts expressed in their dialogue. Exposition is his greatest asset, with drama driven by audience reaction to a character’s divulgence of new information—and Gone Girl is a testament to this.

While Gone Girl becomes the most sadistic cinematic version of he-said/she-said outside the walls of a courtroom, the film is pillared perfectly by its cast as well as its crew. Ben Affleck’s interpretation of Nick Dunne draws fine lines of empathy and calmness, as well as unhappiness and deception for his wife and the people in his mundane, quickly shattering life. Nick’s character, charming throughout the first act of the film, like any other man, shares his concerns about marital life, self-image, and the mistakes he makes as a man and as a husband. Affleck has never been better; yet, the next Caped Crusader isn’t the true runaway star of Gone Girl.

Picking up from Fight Club, it's almost like Fincher thought about this novel adaptation and thought, "Okay... how can I make that bigger? How can I make that better?" Being an artist of suspense of Hitchcock-ian proportions, Fincher engages us throughout with fist-balling mystery, moral ambiguity, worldly satires and a psychotically jumpy plot progression that mirrors the portrait of which it aims to be. Gone Girl is a treasure hunt that may have gone too long, and gotten too ahead of itself - but the overwhelming sense of dread and atmosphere is enough to tip me over to the other side. Rosamund Pike's performance is to the film as Ledger was to 'The Dark Knight', delivering the crisp, cold and sinister psychopath that takes a lot of the credit for pushing the story to its limits. Disturbing, engaging, raunchy and provocative, Gone Girl is an impeccable magnifying glass into the minds of the clinically insane. Expand

The movie is a fantastic adaptation of Flynn's novel. It makes it even better that she wrote the script as well. Her script combined with Fincher's dark and visually stunning directing style makes for an incredible mystery drama. As I said this movie looks beautiful. The cinematography and lighting are both excellently done. The writing contains a surprising yet fitting amount of humor. The narrative unravels in an intelligent and unique manner. The acting in this film is top notch. Everyone in this movie was truly outstanding. Rosamund Pike is the standout performance here though. She absolutely becomes the character of Amy Dunne. She is on point with every single thing she does in the movie. Affleck's performance as Nick Dunne has to be touched upon as well. His character is very mysterious and unclear in his motives. His awkward personality causes people to become suspicious of him throughout the movie. This awkwardness is something that Affleck does excellently. This movie touches on themes of marriage, social norms, economic hardships, and the behavior of the media; all these themes are brilliantly intertwined throughout the movie's narrative. Gone Girl is strangely hilarious, intriguing, and disturbing. It is a perfect movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The reviews were so good. This year's movies have been so terrible (with a couple of exceptions). I was so hoping this would be great - though suspected it wouldn't as the source book was truly third-rate.

Fincher improves on the book (not difficult) with a beautiful film. The Emperor has beautiful clothes but the story itself? More plot holes than a spaghetti sieve. And the character of Amy? Obviously neither the writer nor Fincher has ever met a person with mental illness. Amy's unbelievable characteristics seem to be based on the study of crazy people as portrayed on daytime soaps.

Such a disappointment and would critics start to criticize their "hero" directors when they make inferior pulp like this?

The film was directed by David Fincher and is based on the book by Gillian Flynn who also wrote the screenplay adaptation of her novel. Despite its extraordinary length, i.e. almost 2 and ¾ hours, the film manages to hold the audience’s intetest. Unfortnately, and notwithstanding good acting by Mr. Affleck and Ms. Pike, there are glaring flaws in the scrip that are never explained or accounted for and, in most instances, simply don’t make sense. To elaborate further would give away the plot and that is someithing I prefer not to do. Suffice it to say that the film, after it ends, leaves open many unanswered questions and fails to resolve blatant inconsistencies. I give the movie a 7 noting tha the film could have been more enjoyable to watch if there had been less things so difficult to reconcile and understand. Expand

And then let you walk on the razor every moment. I found this to be one of the few movies where I actually wanted to know WHAT would happened next rather than HOW.

Rosamund Pike acts brilliantly, though that could be said about the entire female cast, and she's able to hold the tension while playing essentially two different characters. Ben Affleck's a bit blunt but I guess that's his style. And man, I still can't watch Neil Patrick Harris without thinking of Barney.

Fincher presented us with a great work of form and managed to keep the substance alive. Now, a couple of plot twists were a little too expedite in my opinion, but all in all it deserves the praise.

It is particularly easy to guess which direction the plot will be heading, but ignoring the minor flaws and some illogical parts towards the second half of the film, the dark, mysterious psychological development of the characters, funny and brutal at sometimes, the flashback editing at the beginning, stylish cinematography, ambient and eerie scores are the major contributions for the film to be one of the most masterpiece marriage thriller in decades. Not much to mention on Ben Affleck, but the surprisingly frightening and psychopathic performance from Rosamund Pike might drive anger of one's nerves, and come to a conclusion that she is the perfect role. A film that gets sillier the longer you watch, the only things that make it worth sitting through are Fincher's stylish direction and a murder scene that won't soon leave your memory.

Gone Girl is so full of suspense that it keeps you on your toes and thinking what is true and what is not and trying to figure out the characters' next moves for the whole lengthy 149 minutes. Speaking about the plot would mean spoilers, so I'll refrain from it, but it should be mentioned that it is full of twists, some more or less predictable, and some just shocking. The actors are brilliant, and Rosamund Pike here is truly the queen of the show. In other words, go watch this movie, it's not that easy to find a better way to spend two and a half hours. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have no idea how this movie could have gotten good reviews. It is long, boring, meandering, and in the end, utterly implausible.

As an example of the implausibility, Ben Affleck's character ends up acting in ways that NO human could ever conceivably act in. What is his motivation for simply moving back in with a woman who has just tried to frame him for murder and set him up for state execution, and who has just murdered a man in cold blood? Or for agreeing to stay with her after she sneakily conceives his child? There is no explanation given in the movie, and none even conceivable. We spend over two hours hearing about how Ben Affleck can't stand this psycho, and there is NO indication that his feelings change - but we're supposed to believe he just takes her back after all that? It's utterly unbelievable.

Gone Girl follows the story of Nick & Amy Dunne. After losing their jobs in the economic downturn and when Nick's mother is terminally diagnosed with breast cancer the newly-wed pair move to Missouri to look after her.
Taking place a small number of years after her death, Nick has become lazy and an irritation to Amy who in turn has grown tired of his new attitude and also hurt by her husbands affair with a student of his.
On their fifth wedding anniversary Nick returns home to find the house trashed and Amy gone, after contacting the police and forensic examination taking place Nick is accused of the murder of Amy, though no body is to be found.
Nick begins a journey to clear his name and find his wife, though what he uncovers is not quite as clear cut as he had hoped, but rather something quite sinister with several months of malicious thought and precise planning in order to execute.
David Fincher's adaptation of the 2012 novel of the same name is impeccable, much the same as his adaptation of Fight Club back in 1999. Thanks to some great directing, editing & a great soundtrack Gone Girl is dark, twisted, thrilling and keeps you guessing right until the end; everything a good mystery film should do.
Though the film comes in at 2 hours 30 minutes, it manages to keep you captivated for every single minute. Just make sure you're comfy, you're going to be there a while.

A masterful work that achieves high levels of art, pure twisty and wacky entertainment, plus a pretty serious meditation on marriage. The film is really three in one--act one is serious and oh so strong like a marvelous Lifetime move, then comes act two with film noir twists, and finally, the pitch perfect final act. GONE GIRL is truly David Fincher's best since FIGHT CLUB but unlike that important work, GONE GIRL never cops out. It ain't perfect though, act two is too long and weak compared to the opening and final sequences. The stunt casting of Tyler Perry and Neil Patrick Harris also doesn't pay off with neither giving particularly interesting performances. But all is redeemed by the strengths of GONE GIRL which include a superb screenplay and two stellar central performances. GONE GIRL is actually kind of indescribable. Just go see it and love it! No logic, no direction, its just a razor-thin plot strung together by contrived scenes, characters with moron level intelligence. Tries to be deep but shallow as a puddle of piss on a road. Afleck's narcissistic wife pretty much telegraphs the twist from the get go. All the more annoying when it gives away the twist way too early in the movie. Hollywood crap custom built for pandering to femininazis. The part where she unveils her master plan and hits herself with a hammer is hilariously stupid. Expand

He did it with Fight Club and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and he's now done it with Gone Girl, the "it" novel of 2012.

Ostensibly a simple story of a wife that vanishes mysteriously under suspicious circumstances, it expertly weaves parallel and divergent narratives through multiple twists and alternative time-lines while skewering the "trial-by-the-media" culture and the real-life horrors of mid-life marriage angst.

Ben Affleck is perfectly cast as Nick Dunne, the protagonist/antagonist husband of the missing wife. The book/movie works so well because Affleck's character is very hard to pin down. He's flawed but like-able, clueless but clever. Rosamund Pike is excellent but to reveal more would be a spoiler.

Fincher even works magic with the minor characters. Who would have thought of Neil Patrick Harris as a creep-manipulative sad-sack stalker. Carry Coon, a standout in the HBO series The Leftovers, plays Nick's sister and the audience's voice of reason when you just want to scream "Nick, you freaking idiot!"

It's not always perfect. Affleck is obviously buffing up for his upcoming role as Batman with bulging shoulders/biceps that are juxtaposed in tight shirts with his character's slovenly "pot-belly." Another character goes from thin to over-weight in just a few days while trying to go incognito. It also seems to struggle to figure out how/when wrap things up.

These are all "nits" as the story churns in your head as the credits roll which is the true test of excellent film-making.

Truly the star of the show is Rosamund Pike, and its becoming a strange trend that Bond girls 10 years from their performance in 007 movies get to achieve greater things. Famke Jansen in Goldeneye 1995 played that insanely powerful witch-like figure in X-Men 3 (OK let's ignore how terrible that movie is to some). Rosamund here manages to exude the performance necessary for her character, and then some.

Ben Affleck, on the other hand, is less stellar, but probably because of how his character is written. Though a matter of personal preference, I always get thrown off by how similar he looks to Ryan Reynolds. He presents himself as a husband that doesn't seem to be as loving to his wife as some may think, and the movie brilliantly highlights these quirks, and explore why he is behaving in such a manner. Without going into too much spoiler, the reason for his behaviour is central to the plot of Pike's disappearance, but not in a straightforward manner as some might guess from the trailer.

And as mentioned, there is a sociopath in the movie, and its one that is beautifully written and acted. It truly shines on how this character manages to find the weakness in social expectations, behaviour, norms, and the justice system. The court of public opinion is a terrible thing once it goes against you, and this character knows it and exploits it, without remorse. I truly feel hatred for this villain, not because of the genius behind the crime, but because of the very rules of "normal" we as a collective society bind ourselves to that stops justice from being delivered, and this sociopath knows it.

There are some social issues on economic recession, job losses, and the "talk shows" that powerfully influence the public opinion. This is quite strong in the first and second act, but by the third, it does dial down due to how the plot is laid out.

What I don't like about the movie is some of the cinematography involved. Its clear from the opening credits that there are lots of fade in and out effects used in certain scenes, and quick transitions. Whilst it may work for some, there are certain scenes that lowered the intended impact and made me feel like I'm passing out.

This is also an 18+ movie; there are sex scenes here that are very open, though non-pornographic in nature. Just a reminder in case they didn't tell you so in the cinema.

Finally, its 2 hours and 50 minutes long. Its not that bad until the third act, where the direction of the movie could sometimes be a bit meandering, though not painfully dragging its feet. Though considering the emotional impact from how the second act concluded, you might not find what you truly are looking for by the closing of the movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. GONE GIRL finally arrives in the cinema here, so what could be more appropriate than Fincher’s vastly anticipated and razor-sharp dissection of modern marriage/relationship for a Halloween night? The aftermath of this trendsetting thriller can impact abidingly on one’s memory not only for its plot twist but also a brave ending which dares to defy the accepted mode of “perpetrator gets punished in the end”, and intrigues viewers to inspect our own quotidian bearings and give an inscrutable glimpse to our partner.

Adapted from Gillian Flynn’s bestseller of the same name, who is also the sole person credited for the screenplay here, so it secures there is no creative discordance as far as the storyline is concerned. GONE GIRL is already Fincher’s highest grossing film in North America, surpasses THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON (2008, 7/10)’s $127 millions record. It is also Fincher’s third collaboration with Trent Reznor (from Nine Inch Nails) and Atticus Boss, after THE SOCIAL NETWORK (2010, 9/10) and THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (2011, 8/10). Prominently the duo’s droning score conjures up an underplayed perturbing ambience which sits perfectly along Fincher’s aloof palette and the central performances from Affleck and Pike.

ThisThis movie was great. I really enjoyed it. I would recommend it to anyone, but keep one thing in mind, if you're well trained as a consumer of entertainment and like the classic hero gets rewarded or villain gets punished; stay at home. This movie is not for you.

On the surface, it is filled with twists, and putting the twist in the middle (I saw this one coming, I kept ignorant about this movie/book until I saw the movie to reserve the effect), then twists at the end.

The final twist isn't much of a twist if you use Real life as an example. Life is ugly, and more often than not, murders go unsolved, and the bad person gets away with it. It's only Hollywood and the fairy-tail narrative we see on the news that has the bad guys always getting what they deserve and good is rewarded. I caught myself several times, laughing out about how a particular set of events happened, or how twisted a character can be!

The supporting roles were fantastically done! The only reason why this isn't a 10/10, is I have an equally hard time fully becoming immersed in emotional strive portrayed by Ben Affleck (equally so with Tom Cruise) The rest of the movie Ben Affleck is entirely believable, but he was only 90% the way there for me. I'd give it a 9.7/10 if I could.

Deeper down the movie takes a misogynistic tone, but that is superficial. Sure it's a woman who fakes abuse, and all that, but it also puts a truly rare role for a woman into the forefront. A truly disturbed and evil woman. She isn't evil because a man cheated on her and pushed her over the top, she's not evil because she was abused, raped, or otherwise victimized. She is the one who victimizes. Thus, this story spins from being misogynistic to truly feminist, and in a beyond entertaining way.

You leave not even aware that this story was deeper than it was. You leave the movie thinking "damn that was a great movie" then when you think about it later, or read some of the criticisms you can see that they come from a place of missing the point entirely.

This movie deserves the positive reviews.

Rosamund Pike - brilliant.
Tyler Perry - Loved his smaller role
Carrie Coon - **** tastic
Kim Dickens - Loved her role and ups and downs of her character's dealing with the case.
Emily Ratajkowski - MY GOD SHE IS HOT

This movie is worth seeing, and now that I read the book (took me 4 days) I'd recommend that book as well. Both are Brilliant and the slight differences in the movie are perfectly fine by me.

The film also manages to be a very entertaining thriller that has you gripped from the first scene as our protagonist Nick, portrayed by Ben Affleck, tries to figure out what has happened to his wife Amy, played by Rosamund Pike who absolutely steals the show. Gone Girl is smart, slick and enthralling psychological thriller that i recommend everybody to watch. Biggest flaws is probably the fact that the film is rather long (i needed to pee real bad) and the fact that after things became clear the film changes past which I found a little jarring and the conclusion is very dream-like and takes away from the realism of which the film presented from the beginning. Gone Girl has more focus on the suspect of the crime and its reaction of all the criticism he or she gets from relatives, media and people. It’s truly something unique and fascinating about it, and I really enjoy watching it.

It surpassed my expectations and it really is a great movie. I never felt bored at all and I was constantly focused on the movie. One of the main aspects that I really love about Gone Girl is that the structure is nonlinear, it keeps jumping back and forward in time and it gives the movie tempo and depth. It’s the same with the story. There’s much focus on the perfect relationship and what that means and what disadvantages that results into. When it comes to the actors are they are superb, especially Rosamund Pike as Amy Dunne. Her character is so fake but at the same time a champion when it comes to lying. It’s her greatest performance to date. Ben Affleck plays a more innocent character and he really fits that role. The first act is amazing. It’s so mysterious and it feels much more like a crime movie. But the second act lost all that, which I don’t like at all.

This is a highly exciting and mysterious movie.

Gone Girl gets a 7.5/10.

Pike is the main triumph, and Affleck, I hate to admit, falls not very far from blatantly wooden. Otherwise of a different male protagonist casting choice, the film succeeds in what it is; a no nonsense mystery thriller. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It plays with the viewer. The film shows a polarity inside a couple, which is surrounded by the society's point of view in front of the situation they are able to see; thing that maintains intrigue inside the film and keeps the viewer in a constant sense of "What will happen?". The problem arises in the movie ending, leaving all the situation in "Is this all of it?". It is a loose end that is constant across the movie but highlighted in the final part; not much problem but crucial at the moment of realizing that the story has more potential than the one exposed. It's a faithful and expertly paced rendition, in-keeping with that book's uniquely nonlinear style, unreliable narration and clever use of red herrings, even if it is perhaps too cerebral for its own good and somewhat overpraised and underwhelming given the hyperbole. Nonetheless, Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck are perfectly cast - this is a breakout role for Pike and a career-best performance by Affleck. Neil Patrick Harris, on the other hand, was miscast and his character doesn't have the necessary development in the film as he does in the book. Likewise, Tyler Perry is underused. But this still another worthy entry to David Fincher's repertoire which includes similarly good adaptations of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and "Fight Club". It's certainly a must-see for fans of the book. Expand

A thoroughly entertaining and thoughtful film. Twisted, enough so to make your stomach turn a few times, and inventive, but also timely.

There are dramatic conceits to be sure, but anyone who thinks that a woman can't be this crazy hasn't been following the news. Far from being misogynistic, if anything it's hard on men, portraying Nick as a loser who can't control his sex drive and the rest of the movie's men as being dupes and fools. The women, conversely, range from the titular Machiavellian **** from Hell to Nick's loyal twin sister, the one genuinely competent police officer, the predatory ratings-driven talk show host, the innocent coed, and yes, a variety of dupes and fools as well. If any film has attacked gender politics more smartly and more fairly, I've not seen it.

And it makes for a thrilling ride. An audience desensitized to violence will likely be upset by some of the scenes. Piercing cultural critiques and sarcastically written laugh lines alternate with disturbing plot twists. And how often can you say "man, Tyler Perry was perfect in that role"? I wish they had held the main plot twist a bit longer, and, like the book, alternated more into the titular character's perspective, but despite these narrative shortcomings, the movie we did get is well worth watching.

It's steamy, it's sexy, gory and psychotic, all mashed together with mixed emotions. We can all agree that the 'overrated' director David Fincher does that perfectly in his films, in this film fits the bill perfectly. Best-selling author Gillian Flynn's debut as a screenwriter is just chilling and effected craft. We have Ben Affleck playing a desperate dick husband, he tries to make the media and everyone us believe that he did not kill his wife (or had anything else to do with the disappearance). Rosamund Pike is even slightly better than Affleck's character. Kim Dickens character was really amusing as the detective. Carrie Coon's character "Margo" was had a good comedic presence to the screen, but at times the stuff she says sometimes can be at the wrong time so that's what i guess. I am not sure if this film is gonna impact Perry's career, but it'll get the guy a better role. Neil Patrick Harris' character is awkward and lovely at times. But the ending is stupid!

Gone Girl is easily one of the best movies of 2014.

The entire main cast in this movie were excellent in this movie. Some of my favorite performances were from Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Carrie Coon and Kim Dickens but the real stars of the show were Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. Ben Affleck’s and Rosamund Pike’s performances as Nick and Amy are top-notch in this movie. They played their roles as if they were born to play their roles. It makes sense for Ben Affleck since the movie covers how his character Nick had this media hysteria about him and Ben Affleck experienced this similarly in real life during his relationship with Jennifer Lopez. They also had a great chemistry together and their Oscar performances are Oscar worthy without being too obvious.

The plot was intriguing and edge of the seat from start to finish. They made some changes from the source material in this movie but this won’t bother the fans of the book. I enjoyed the scenes that were outside both Nick and Amy’s point of view and they really moved the plot of the movie.

I am impressed how Gillian Flynn was able to translate her own book to the big screen in her screenplay. She did an impressive job as a first time screenwriter.

David Fincher’s direction is marvelous to watch. The cinematography makes this movie pleasing to see with its yellow coloring. The editing makes this movie thrilling and intriguing. And the eerie score in this movie fits the entire movie’s tone and it enhances the movie experience.

Gone Girl is an suspenseful and entertaining movie thanks to its top-notch cast performance, intriguing plot, impressive screenplay from Gillian Flynn, David Fincher’s marvelous direction, pleasing cinematography and an eerie score that fits the entire movie.

Rosamund Pike offers a great performance but just sometimes I feel like her dialogue is just too much for me. It seems like this movie is for a higher class of people than myself and I think its pretty overrated. Expand

If this flick was 90 minutes long it would have benefited greatly from the unnecessary elongated drag out.

Other than the last 45 minutes this flick was awesome. If only they shaved minimum 30 minutes off running time and tied things up swifter we could have enjoyed a potential modern masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gone Girl is a phenomenal psychological suspense thriller reminiscent of a lost Hitchcockian style. Gillian Flynn perfectly adapts her novel to the silver screen with a modern, paranoia-inducing story that David Fincher directs exquisitely. The cinematography and editing help accent the dark tone of the film coupled with the eerie and instantly iconic score.

The greatest part of the film, which is difficult to achieve with its unbelievable script, is the acting by Rosamund Pike. With her best performance to date she brings us Amy Dunne, an empathetic, intelligent and borderline sociopathic character that makes you both sob for her yet cringe at her actions. Such a wonderfully dynamic character.

There was nothing much that I could complain about this film although I find that a general audience of this century may find the narrative to drag a bit as little to no action happens through the second act of the film. However, that does not detract from the fact that Gone Girl is a brilliantly made film that deserves acknowledgement and should be a strong contender during Awards Season.

Sociopath.Manipulation.Improvisation.Truth.Lies.Dark.Emotions.Thriller.Words.Stories.Gillian Flynn.David Fincher.Brilliant

The Score by Atticus Toss and Trent Reznor is so intelligent for a thriller genre.

“ David [Fincher] was at the chiropractor and heard this music that was inauthentically trying to make him feel OK, and that became a perfect metaphor for this film … The challenge was, simply, what is the musical equivalent of the same sort of façade of comfort and a feeling of insincerity that that music represented? [My primary aim was] to instill doubt [and] remind you that things aren’t always what they seem to be. ”

Rosamund Pike gave one of her best performances till date reminding me of Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct )

Its a masterpiece for sure but not the best of the year.
I'm actually waiting for Goofs(mistakes) in the movie! (Is there any?)

I'll just quote this

If you’re planning on seeing David Fincher’s adaptation of Gone Girl for a date night movie, The Best of Me may be a more appropriate choice. Gone Girl captivates audiences while simultaneously making them question just who the person sitting next to them really is.

Gillian Flynn’s thriller novel, Gone Girl hit the big screens October 3 with a recognizable cast.

Ben Affleck plays Nick Dunne, a man under suspicion when his wife disappears on the morning of their anniversary. Audiences follow Affleck throughout the beginning of the film, trying to pin him as a mourning husband or a murderous one.

Similar to many of his other roles, Affleck plays the Boston-boy jock or your typical guy’s guy. Affleck puts on a great performance, being able to make audiences love and hate Nick Dunne in all of Gone Girl’s mysterious confusion.

Affleck’s on screen wife, Amy Dunne, played by Rosamund Pike, makes an appearance midway through the movie adding relief to a slow start. While the movie lives up to its thriller genre expectation, Gone Girl drags on a bit in the beginning only to gain a solid momentum more than halfway through.

Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry’s appearances midway through add to this newfound energy lacking in the beginning.

Harris’s character comes just in time to add chaos as Amy Dunne’s pathetic highschool lover. Perry swoops in as a high profile defense lawyer for accused husbands, adding comical relief in a usually dark movie. Both Harris and Perry freshen up Gone Girl through its mid movie slump.

While the bulk of Gone Girl is focused on what happened to Amy Dunne, it also highlights other subthemes such as how media portrays missing people and the suspects involved. The similarities between Gone Girl’s talk show personnel, Ellen Abbott, and Nancy Grace are all too alike to be coincidental, adding an inside joke to anyone who has watched Nancy Grace.

Gone Girl is worthwhile movie to see if you have two and a half hours to spare. This thriller leaves the audience with answers yet still hangs titillating questions over their head while they walk out of the theatre, eager to discuss what was just seen.

As the film slowly unfolds it is clear to see an unhappy marriage is at the root of Amy Dunne’s disappearance.

Gone Girl spins the thriller genre, walking audiences through slanted media and the foggy truth all the while not knowing who to trust, even the main character.
