This movie is incredibly good, I dont know what peoples problems are... a 64/100? pathetic. this movie owns... and if you think it was a horrible plot you don't know what a good story is. Wow. This movie is terrific. Everything, from the writing to the acting, is sheer perfection. The battle scenes are extremely graphic, but awesome nonetheless. Absolutely outstanding. The screenplay, special effects and actors. What more can a movie need to be successful. Th only problem with some critics, is that they do not know when a good movie hits them. A top 10/10. So watchable over and over again.

Gladiator is a triump of a film that excells in every catagory. Gladiator has talented acting, great plot, Beautiful music and superb action scenes. Ridley scott's best film until Robin Hood in 2010. I really enjoy watching this film.

"What we do in life, echoes in eternity". The best dialogue I have ever heard, so Philosophical, so Strengthening, so Inspiring, and just so Wonderful. I'd love to watch it all over again and again. This film is about a general who became a slave, then he became a gladiator. Maximus wants to take revenge about his son and his wife who have been murdered from the young emperor who has also killed his father Marcus. It is a great film.

While it's not as shocking, disturbing, or otherwise counter-traditional as films that their class eats up and spits out 90+ ratings for, this masterpiece by Ridley Scott recaptures something special about epic films that has been almost entirely lost since the days of Lawrence of Arabia, Ben-Hur, and Spartacus. This movie brings the notion of redemption to life in a way that makes you deeply empathize with the main character, Maximus. While a fictional work, it brilliantly captures the elegant and corrupt world Rome at its apex. With intense (but not over-the-top) battles fueled by choreography rather than CGI, cunning dialogue, and a truly honorable story, Gladiator deserves to be recognized for what it is, an iconic motion picture, among of the best of its time.

The plot of the story is one of downfall and the returning of a great hero, warrior, and man. The plot takes you to a world that is possibleThis is by far one of the best, if not the best, movie of all time. Or at least according to me.

The plot of the story is one of downfall and the returning of a great hero, warrior, and man. The plot takes you to a world that is possible to imagine and is so easily and well done that you could almost believe that the movie was in fact shot in Ancient Rome. It's so expertly written that I have watched it dozens of times and still enjoy every moment of it. The story adds to the setting, character development, and overall feel of the movie. It's an amazing film as far as storytelling goes.

As for the acting I can even appreciate the main villain. He comes off as a whining, simpering lunatic with quite a lot of daddy issues. Most of the time the villain is the one person I find most uninteresting, but this time I did find him interesting and due to this wanted him to die so hard. As for the main role, played by Russel Crowe, Maximus is just the guy. He's the one guy I'd want in case of zombie outbreak. Batman is well and good, but Maximus is better. Batman can abandon you and go and fight the zombies by himself and then when he returns to you he can sit there and do some detective work to try and figure out why leaving you by yourself got you killed. While Maximus will ensure the survival of you, your friends, the kid with you, the dog, the cat, and the donkey you've all got following you. In short...best cinema hero ever. A believable hero too.

The settings are just amazing and really suck you into the film. Every piece, every segment looks like something you would see in Ancient Rome. From the coliseum to the streets of Rome you're made to believe that they're all in an accurately depicted ancient civilization. Not to mention the costuming also plays a big role in giving you that feel. No one is dressed out of place and the costumes due the timeline and the movie honest justice.

The music is amazing, and it stands out when it needs to, and fades to the back when it needs to. They did very well on that part and unlike many movies that just like to park trumpets in your face and blow your eardrums up this one has none of that. They did their music well and come on...I love Enya.

In the end this is a beautiful, touching, gorgeous movie that's all heart. It had me crying my eyeballs out, and also got me thrilled. It's one of a kind and to this day Gladiator remains one of, if not my favorite, film of all time.… Expand

I knew I liked it when a originally watched it but never had it in my top films list. This is easily in my top 5. Just had the privilege of watching this movie on a big screen with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and a full choir doing the music at Ravinia in Highland Park, IL. Amazing experience.

While I have always loved the movie before, after what I saw and heard tonight, I'll fight anyone in the arena that disparages it.

Brilliant musical score, top notch acting by the entire cast(Phoenix was robbed of a well deserved best supporting actor award that year), and historical accuracy be damned, a great story. You want everything in a movie to be completely true to 'what really happened' you can throw out 99.9% of movies. WHY does it matter????

Underrated by critics, but appreciated by the people that matter...we plebian movie goers.… Expand

Darn good movie. I especially liked the emotionality of Maximus (Russel Crowe). Russel Crowe acts fascinating and in mine opinion ONE of the best (nothing can top Robert de Niro! although he is slowly going down). His dialogue with his rustyDarn good movie. Heart breaking, sad, violent, and realistic...my type of movie. The story of a Roman general being sold into being a Gladiator after being betrayed. One of the best movies I've seen. It has well executed action sequences, an interesting, yet simple plot, great characters, superb acting. I don't expect to like the villain, their actions, or their beliefs, but I usually like to see some sort of redeeming quality. But even in that case there was a rational explanation for his behavior, and his character was well written none the less. I don't know what movie that guy at the Washington Post was watching, because there is no way he could have rated such an epic movie so poorly. I guess the user scores ratings and the sheer amount of awards the movie has won(wiki says its won 48 different awards) are more accurate depictions of the movie that the reviews that were published. I wouldn't say the movie is perfect, but.… Expand

A really great movie. Who would think that something as ridiculous as gladiators could garner so much critical acclaim and an Oscar for best actor. It shows just how good Crowe is. Props to Joaquin Pheonix as well.

His son however has other ideas. Angered by what he feels is a betrayal he sets about exerting his murderous authority and Maximus, having refused to swear his loyalty, only narrowly escapes with his life. Bent on vengeance Maximus later returns to Rome as a gladiator hoping to take down the new emperor.

Aside from a few plot holes Gladiator is peerless in its quality. Russell Crowe, always an excellent actor, plays his defining role, his presence commanding attention throughout the film and the supporting cast do well not to be completely overshadowed by his performance. The action sequences are brilliantly shot and staggering in their realism as all the gory details are shown. As the film reaches its climax this all combines to make it impossible to not root for Maximus in what is arguably the movie of the decade.… Expand

Well, Ridley Scott does it again. A fantastic movie with very well choreographed fight scenes. The excess amounts of blood are a bonus as well. Simply a timeless classic. The only other movie that tops this as far as medieval war movies go is braveheart. As almost everyone else has mentioned awesome action, story, music, and acting all round.

Ridley Scott rarely disappoints with his films. All of them, including the unjustly-maligned Legend, are visually stunning and just show the director's artistic genius. Gladiator should be up there as one of the best films he's done, if not the best. Almost everything on screen is very graphic, making some scenes upsetting to watch, but the visuals are just outstanding. The music score by Hans Zimmer just adds to the drama that is already there in the script. which is well written and rather Shakespearean. The performances were brilliant, especially Joaquin Pheonix and Oliver Reed. Russell Crowe is wholly convincing in the title role, and Richard Harris and Connie Nielson are also excellent. The costumes are brilliant, as well as the sets. In conclusion, Gladiator is a near masterpiece, only marred by some upsetting scenes. 9/10 Bethany Cox.… Expand

He clearly knows how to make the viewer feel like he/she is in a different place, time, and reality. The movie follows Maximus, a Roman General, through his journey from a profound General to a measly gladiator. Russell Crowe portraits Maximus as a glorious Roman general and beloved father/husband. He fits the role pretty good physically and verbally. “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.” Russell Crowe portraits a Roman General as or even better than Gerard Butler (Leonidas) from the movie “300”. Overall this is an exciting movie to see because it’s full of action and the scenery is good. The movie is pretty lengthy at 2 hours and thirty-five minutes but that time will pass by fairly quickly due to the action pact, violence and romantic scenes.… Expand

The character stuff in Gladiator really works. Coming from a genre that made do with archetypal characters doing obligatory British accents for years, it is nothing short of a revelation that Gladiator is such a fulfilling dramatic experience.

From general to slave, from slave to gladiator and from gladiator to hero. The idea of Ridley Scott of making tribute for romans movies of the vein of Ben Hur and Spartacus is remarkable. The battle sequences on Coliseum are heart pounding.

Vista 'Gladiator' debo decir en primer lugar que tanto la BSO como visualmente es absolutamente demoledora. Y es que la recreación de la antigua Roma esta increíble. Personalmente, me encanta esta ambientación y ya viendo la primera escena deVista 'Gladiator' debo decir en primer lugar que tanto la BSO como visualmente es absolutamente demoledora. Y es que la recreación de la antigua Roma esta increíble. Personalmente, me encanta esta ambientación y ya viendo la primera escena de la película se nota que estás ante algo grande. Pero al final la película no llega a ser tan épica, tan emotiva y tan gloriosa como parece que va a ser, es la sensación con la que la acabé.

El guión está bien y las actuaciones cumplen, destacando a Russel Crowe quien interpreta un muy buen Maximus, pero el resto del reparto solo bien, sin más. Quiero destacar lo poco que me convenció el antagonista...

En conclusión, una muy buena película, pero que tampoco llego a entender porque está tan mitificada porque está lejos de ser una obra maestra. La doy un 9 con más tintes de 8. Y quiero rescatar el momento "me llamo Maximus". ¡Ese es el tono!… Expand

I'm not a big fan of epic war movies. I didn't like LOTR trilogy as much as most people did. I just don't feel invested in such stories. It's beautifully shot. It has a fantastic score. It's very entertaining, and fast paced, Ridley Scott didn't waste any time, and I watched the extended version! It has very complex and compelling characters. And above all that, it has heart. This movie has a very moving and touching story, and that really surprised me. Russell Crowe gave an iconic performance as Maximus, and Joaquin Phoenix delivered a magnetic over-the-top performance as the villain, Commodus. This is a hammy performance that doesn't only fits the film's Shakespearean tale, but it also can easily be justified by the character's motives and persona. As for issues, the pacing of some series of events at the first act that lead to a turning point in the plot was a bit faster than it should be, and .... That's all!
