It's arguably more entertaining and reaches a wider audience than the original movie, but loses the majority of it's philosophical intensity in the process. Many scenes from the original seemed shoehorned in and lost their impact in the process. The character of Major was botched as it feels too broody, hopeless, sad, and mopey compared to the original major who was wise-cracking, relatively cheerful, and at peace with who she was. Perhaps that wouldn't be a problem if one hasn't seen the original, which i suspect the majority of moviegoers haven't. It was still bothersome for me.

Overall, it was okay. It was fun, but not amazing. It wasn't that memorable aside from the gorgeous special effects, and would be a decent redbox or netflix movie.

Unfortunatley the films is overshadowed by the whitewash controversy which has obviously impacted its ratings and success. At least it has been well recieved in Japan and places where the controversy has not been a factor. A shame that we will likely not see a sequal. The movie looks fantastic and Scarlett does a fantastic job of portraying a unique and strong version of the major that is both delicate and powerful with a very human quality that still remains true to the majors original detached behaviour. Beautilfully made, and very true to the spirit and story of the original series. The futuristic setting is great, and Hong Kong serves as the perfect backdrop for the filming.

I was really surprised at how much I liked that movie (I am a fan for years and own all the anime, still have to get the manga).
I loved how this movie was essentially an adaptation of the first anime, going as far as recreating whole scenes with the amazingly cast ScarJo, who did a perfect job on this! What surprised me most, wa how they took elements from all of the anime and mixed them in order to create one richer picture, than the originals themselves. We got the fake memories and parts of Majors past from Arise, the villain from 2nd Gig and the overall plot from the first one. They did tone down the technoblabble and the high-sci-fi concepts, as well as all the infighting between the government agencies, which confused the hell out of me sometimes, so by making it easier to understand, they managed not to dumb it down!
To me, this movie was not an adaptation of Ghost in the Shell... it IS Ghost in the Shell.

I've seen it twice so far and I've teared up at the creation scene at each viewing. It is beautiful, deep enough, atmospheric enough and a fine introduction to the world of Ghost In The Shell for new fans, as well as a being rewarding enough to long-term fans, with the hope of much more to come.
It's clearly not as deep and involved as prior material but if it were, would it honestly have any chance of getting the interest of the wider public whose currency gets film 2, 3, 4 etc. funded? Core fans, deep concepts and theory of life stuff are what you plan for AFTER film 1 is under your belt. Dissing this film and ignoring the incredible achievements this film HAS made is unfair, unjustified and closed-minded.
This film opens the big-budget door to Ghost In The Shell and as such, is well worth seeing.

There must be a special place in hell reserved for greedy talentless hacks who make soulless PG-13 remakes.

Just went to see #ghostintheshell aka #gwailointheshell starring #scarlettjohanssen. My honest opinion follows..
Imagine being a Chinese girl or Black girl and a car full of guys drives by you shouting YOU ARE ONE HOT CHINKY!!(or N word)
Now on the one hand you feel good because a gang of guys acknowledged your beauty, you maybe feel good about it and it lifts your self esteem, and after a few moments, you think a little harder and realise you just got called a Chinky (or N word) and actually you just got verbally assaulted. Now you feel really confused and kinda in a little shock, but still confused clinging onto the compliments you were given yet at the same time feeling kinda violated in a complimentary way right?
Now that's what the **** is wrong with this movie. I mean I loved the film itself. It's a great film and in many ways really does well rewriting the old script and making it interesting for all of us people who know the anime.
But seriously WTF I mean WTF Firslty Tokyo is blatantly Hong Kong with a few CGi animations chucked over it. Anyone from Hong Kong is gonna laugh as you see Tsui Wah in the background or the HQ of Biotech as the Centre. It's kinda cool but took me out of the movie. So lazy they couldn't have CG'd IFC to not look so blatantly IFC.
Kinda a disrespect to Japan not actually using a shred of Japan.
That's not obviously my main gripe. My main gripe is the insane whitewashing of the entire movie. Ok ****ing cast Scarlett Johanssen, she was good as the Major, but why the **** does the entire population of Tokyo have to be white?! There's one ****ing Japanese dude in the entire movie, even the Geisha is a robot :)
I mean come the **** on, ok fine you wanna #whitewash a few characters, ok. But **** man every ****ing person bar a few dead henchmen was white.
I left the movie enjoying it, but feeling really frustrated by the casting of it. Like I said the movie is really good. But **** seriously you cast like 1 Japanese person, in a movie based in Tokyo, with a crack team of white american (Japanese Government) commandos and the only 2nd teir Asian is ****ing Hong Kong Chinese and not remotely in any way Japanese looking at all!!!
My god what do we have to look forward to next? Mulan by Disney with a blonde Mulan with american father etc? WTF is this ****
Please remake Spirited Away and shoot it exclusively in India and have all the cast either Indian or Black? If you can white wash this movie, why the **** not brownwash a few movies???
Please disney make Mulan an all Chinese cast, and main language in Mandarin I dare you. You'll make a ****ing fortune in China and explain to the West why you chose to make a big budget movie about Chinese people actually shot in China in their native language for 1.4Billion mandarin speaking people to enjoy.
****s sake..
So Ghost in the Shell, Good movie go watch it.

As a fan of the manga and the whole anime series (1198, 2015, GITS SAC 1&2, Solid State Society, Arise 1-4 and Rising, well all I can say is: NO.
This movie is horrible. I give 1.5 point to photography, the only excellence in this movie, and 1.5 to Johansson, so much criticized (by me too) but in the end, the only valid thing in the movie. now, the bad things...too many to say.
1st, Director: my uncle Ben could direct this film better. It is unbelievable how action scene of 1998 are still better than a 2017 movie (with class A spending budget). Most of the action scenes are from a B movie, really, really disappointing how you can see magnificent images and so poor sequences

2) Content: guys, if you have tons of material to choose from, don't try to put everything in the same movie, the result will be messy, trivial and with no logical connection. that what happened here, too much content at the same time = confusion, lack of depth

3) Meaning: the whole meaning of Ghost in the Shell has been revisited in a naive, stupid, and worse, already passed argument about human life and Artificial Intelligence. That is NOT the main point of Ghost in The Shell: the point is Evolution of Sentient Being, from Individualities embodied in phisical sentient being, from Neural Networks where Identities melt into virtual new form of collective intelligences. That's one of the real point to be discussed, the loss of identity, the evolution of human being beyond physical bodies, the possibility of losing our own identity in order to transcend human body limitations. I am really surprised of how the production can spend so badly a class A budget for such a bad movie. I will forget this exist. forever.

Yes, the special effects were there but in some cases great (cyborg designs) and in other cases very poor (...almost everything else.) Many scenes featured too much CG that led to seemingly different shot movies melded together. There may have been too much left unexplained during the movie which could leave many confused, and the most intriguing character (the villain) was underused. The action and Scar-Jo's performance were excellent though, however I left the cinema thinking I would be fine if I never saw that film again... Expand

Obviously (and I don’t feel this was done just for the western audience) has been toned down from the original. I feel this was done to ease newcomers into the franchise.

Truly is a shame about negative comments and reviews this is getting. You can tell there was a lot of love gone into recreating this world and truly deserves a chance. Overall don’t let the whitewashing bulls***t sway you. If you’re a fan you’ll enjoy it unless you’re that kinda fan…..

Its and entertaining movie with great visuals, but they managed to reduce a thought invoking anime into a mindless popcorn flick devoid of soul.

Johansson's incarnation is on point, if you ignore the obvious whitewashing of the character, and the cheap excuse they give within the movie to justify it. Nevertheless she manages to present a cohesive character. The supporting cast is good too.

All in all, its an entertaining movie, though as I've stated before it lacks the philosophical nuances that made the original so endearing. It focuses on action to action a la Transformers

Visuals:Ghost in the Shell is an adaption of the 1989 Anime that is focussing on the moralic side of merging humans with high end technology. After seeing the movie yesterday in 3D im still ab bit confused of how to rate this movie exactly. Visuals:

So what comes in mind first is the visuals and artdesign that is used in this movie, that is in some parts excellent and in other parts very below average. It is necessary, that this oppinion is based only on the 3D version of the movie, as I think the 2D trailers are having way more aesthetics then the 3D version I was watching last night. When the visuals are great, they show us a nice steampunk world with cool action, as per the first action scene in the restaurant when major crashes a hack and slowmotion, mixed with a nice choreography come into play in the scenes. When the visuals are bad, we see flights through the futuristic Section 9 where the texture details are very low and show their CGI extremely obviously. About the interpretation of the look of the city one can argue. I found it in most time a bit distracting and too colorful. Story:

When it comes to the story, I was not too much in all the previous Ghost in the Shell movies, so I had the opportunity to watch the movie without too many expactations. But when it came to the plot, I was also a bit of mixed feelings, as the movie does not so well in creating "wow" moments, when it starts enfolding the plot.
It was to predictable even if you have never seen any Ghost in the Shell movie before. As my girlfriend was telling me the end after 1/3rd of the movie already. Also it is pretty hard to find out the attachments between the characters themselves because mostly they are just there and do what they do. Backstories are a bit neglected in here.

Actors:

This is were surprisingly the movie had its most points gained in my oppinion. Major, played by Scralett Johansson, was pretty close to the animes original. And Batou, played by Pilou Asbaek, was extremely well taken over visually. Before the movie was released I ready and heared a lot of concerns to take western actors to display the characters, but when you look the original Anime, you will see (as in most animes) the characters in there are also not asians. So this was fitting very well in my oppinion. I also think the acting itself was in most parts fine. One thing that distracted me however all the time, was the way Scarlett Johannson moved. It looked in most parts like she was trying to act how a robot would be walking. I think one can interpret it like that, but for me it was very distracting, as in the original movie I felt major was walking and moving just like a normal human. Verdict:

So when I just rate the fun I had with the movie I would give it a low 7 out of 10. I think also the visuals and the story, as well as the acting, was on the same level. It was okay to look and I was never bored. I would prefer to watch it in 2D again, with higher resolutions to maybe rethink my visual ratings.

Given the low critic reviews I didn't have much expectation for this, but actually it's a solid sci-fi movie and a great adaptation of the original Manga. Blade Runner comparisons are inevitable and visually it's extremely impressive.

There are some very brief moments where the CGI is a little flawed, but the film respects the audience, has a good story and Scarlett Johansson puts in a great performance.

I don't agree with the overly-harsh reviews; although no masterpiece, it's still a decent film.

I actually own them all as well except for Arise which is free on Netflix. The 2017 live action film faithfully portrays the original 95 film story line with plot twists thrown in so I wouldn't get bored. If you consider that the film has been more accepted in Asia then here, it is apparent that the whitewashing argument is more politically motivated than genuine concern for Asian actresses livelihood and questions of ethnic portrayal. Enough said on that.

On it's own, the live action film is an interesting story even if it does not possess a very deep plot. Honestly, it would not be interesting to uninitiated audiences to expound on these plot intricacies anyway. I often found myself playing back the dialogs in both voice and translated subtitles just to understand what was going on in the movies and TV series. The visuals and translation of concepts to live action is without question, stunning. Just to piss off Ridley Scott fans I am going to go ahead and say it approaches Blade Runner levels of brilliance in visuals. Certainly, 30 years of technology and advancements give any Sci-fi film the edge these days. Yes, Prometheus looks amazing but aside from the Engineer cave scene there is just not that much going on there technologically speaking. I digress. I enjoyed the film and it touched on the deeper plot themes to give hints to the initiated what was going on. Sanders copies the original 1995 anime, but hey, Abrams did the same with the first and third Star Treks. I think the GITS film is great and hope its' box office failure doesn't prevent the studio from using this film as a take off point in exploring other stories in the GITS world that include other characters like Borma, Saito (who cameoed), Paz, not to mention the Tachikomas. Disappointing really if it ends there but I've heard there is a new GITS anime already in the works in Japan!

Visually, Rupert Sanders's adaptation of 'Ghost in the Shell' is stunning, featuring gorgeous cinematography and mind-blowing CGI, oh and of course Scarlett Johansson - but then there's EVERYTHING else about it.

Firstly, don't get me wrong, 'Ghost in the Shell' is far from a bad film, but equally it's far from being an excellent film, maybe just balancing above mediocre, and the reason for this is down to the clichƩd and convoluted storyline, underdeveloped two-dimensional characters and lack of relation to its source material - but as I stated above, visually this film is a marvel. The original version of 'Ghost in the Shell' was one of the first anime films I ever had the chance to see, and whilst it does delve into the "weird" side of anime at parts, it is nonetheless an abstract piece of art and still stands the test of time as one of the finest anime films, however this will never come near that.

So what are the memorable qualities in this film? Um, there's, um... well there's Scarlett Johansson when she... um... yeah. Virtually nothing. It depicts a metropolitan future on an almost frightening note - but that's been done before time and time again. In this future, around 70% of humanity have cyborg-like alterations made to their body, and the general vistas of the city, whilst stunning, add an almost claustrophobic quality to them. Tight smothering streets, and enough fluorescent lights to make 'Blade Runner' jealous.

The story itself is rather straight forward, a woman is cybernetically-enhanced and forced to act as a weapon to prevent the occurrence of "terrorism" and "hacking", however along the way she begins to uncover more about her past and how she became the titular "ghost in the shell". But the problem is, this plot is clichƩd to hell, and characters dash in and out of the story never having any real relevance within the movie's world, including the concluding villain (don't worry, no spoilers here). It tries to be smart, but just ends up convoluted and over-blown.

All-in-all it's a fair attempt at an adaptation, which is more than can be said for Sanders's film before. But it just falls short in too many places to really make its mark as a sci-fi great. If we were just there for the visuals, this film would be near-masterful, but that's not the case here.

Based on media franchise of the same name, ā€žGhost in the Shellā€œ is the first live-action movie of the seminal cyber epic about human enhanced into super soldier who clashes with dangerous criminals.
In order to add some international star power, the main hero – originally Asian – has turned into sexy and nimble white girl (Scarlett Johansson), the choice surely liked by many and despised by some more hard-core fans. And adding some street cred, there is legendary director Takeshi Kitano supporting her.
There are– or at least one can perceive – nods to all kinds of mind-bending sci-fi classics that have gone before, ā€žThe Matrixā€œ and ā€žAssassin’s Creedā€œ among others.
The gravity-defying asskicking and futuristic environments sure look good, with all the gigantic holograms dominating the cityscape and everything.
Sadly it does not really feel like a living breathing world – it’s much more like a videogame. So you may not remember it long after watching but it’s competent if unoriginal vision of what futuristic looks like.
What the fans of previous ā€žGhost in the Shellā€œ incarnations – especially manga and anime – may lament about is the horribly simplified approach that the western movie makers has used. But if you don’t know or care about the legacy, the first live-action movie may quench some thirst for futuristic action. The result is not bad, really. It’s just not terribly involving either.
It’s not gonna become a megahit, because for all the good looks it’s too niche for general audience and probably too shallow for manga or anime heads.
Oh well. At least we get an idea about how the coming ā€žBlade Runnerā€œ sequel and Marvel’s Black Widow movie(s) may look like.
There’s a fully functional spiritual side to the story, and it’s actually much more exciting to follow events this way. But all the spiritual stuff has been pushed to the background and is mentioned only in passing.
So it can’t effectively compensate for the shallowness of the main plot or sure-handed but emotionally distant style which never lets you close to the characters. The potential is all there, but the result will leave many a bit unsatisfied.
Watched it in 3D. Didn’t think the extra D added enough to justify its existence.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yes I gave in a 10. It should get an 8 but due to the people who down-vote this movie I had to do it!
The reason is simple. I saw the original animation when I was a young boy and loved it. To see this story re-envisioned in reality really overwhelmed me. So please go and see this movie. All the critics are sour and wrong!! But please please make up your own mind and see the movie!

The incarnation of GITS is truly in the spirit of the original anime and series, even if the story has been 'streamlined' a bit. Many of the great stories and myths of humanity have commonly used elements...that doesn't detract from their power.

I actually went into the film a bit skeptical, based on much of what I'd read. And yet...as I sat there waiting to be disappointed, the film grabbed me and didn't let go. I was lost in this world, and emotionally invested. Without revealing too much, many scenes (particularly the ending) perfectly capture the trademark intense bursts of action that are so appealing and characteristic of the original animations. These are incredibly satisfying scenes to watch.

P.S. - I'm a long-time reader of Metacritic, and created an account for the first time specifically to write this review...to counteract some of the negative reviews here.

Well, if they wanted to copy the 1995 Anime, they should’ve done so, but create half-made copy.
The movie is not bad, but it also not good. A number of scenes were copied from 1995 Anime, or its 2.0 upgrade. Few scenes were copied from Solid State Society OVA. And I mean copied, in an almost frame to frame basis. However some other scenes were obviously invented anew (f.e. yakuza bar scene), and they do not match in style (and the difference in the choreography of the scenes is way too visible) and are much less stunning visually. The story is very different, and is full of Hollywood clichĆ©s – Evil Corporationā„¢, fake memoryā„¢ etc. I was expecting a new story (and I’d rather prefer a new story to something, that I know well), however It is very secondary (to an extent, that I’d say I’ve seen it in every second American Sci-Fi movie including James Bond) and is mainly used to tie in the scenes. It is heavily based on Motoko, rather than exploring and presenting the world around, and the concept is that Motoko is unique first human brain transplanted into a cyborg body, who is on a hunt for her past (and you can easily guess the whole plot from here). Despite my initial skepticism about white washing, Johansson played the role well (although there was limited space for that), however actor playing Batou was very weak (the actor wasn’t trying at all). Other members of Section 9 made a very brief appearance to say anything serious about them. Aramaki also was quite good, although Takeshi Kitano decided to alter the character.
Verdict: 4/10 – Some scenes are visually good, and they are recreation of classical GITS. Some are way too bad/primitive/simplistic. Especially the bar torture scene, which was unnecessary, and way too out of the style of the movie.
I do not recommend seeing this in the cinema (CGI is not really that stunning – DR. Strange CGI was way better), just wait for an HD version appearing on sale.

The dialogue was sad and she is not a good actress so it was even worse.
Looks incredibly boring. From the ones i've seen anime is really hard to do properly in live action and these guys didn't do it either.
I'd rather watch an old Cutey Honey live action tape i have.
Much better.

I would almost say: don't do it. It is what I would say when planning a remake of Old Boy or a squel to Trainspotting, Blade Runner or any iconic movie. Don't do it. But I have to admit that I am curious about the sequel to Blade Runner nevertheless. Maybe it isn't going to be as bad as I fear?

So what about a remake of Ghost in the Shell?
Well, I have yet to see the original, so I can not compare it to that one, and that is fine. This movie, with Scarlet Johannson in the role of Major Mika Killian, a cybernetic lifeform with only her brain being human, is on the face of it an action movie with some depth. Personally I think the the second half of the movie shows some more depth, with the Major being more on the path of self discovery, than the first half. Some scenes I did find touching. Personally I liked Pilou Asbaek as Bayou.

There is certainly some room for criticism, specifically in the way that they hammer in what they mean with the word ghost. Yes.. yes.. we know, you don't have to repeat it over and over throughout the film. Also, while I don't think that Johannson is miscast, I do think that she is also not well cast either. She gives a good performance, as might be expected, but every time she walks out into the rain I expected the black from her hair to wash out to show she is really a blond. No, it isn't that what bothers me specifically, just that she felt out of place at times. It would have been better if they had chosen someone like Maggie Q or Kim So-yeon. Not because she has to be an asian, but because if a big part of your movie is asian and plays in a seemingly asian town, then why make the lead not asian. Seems to make more sense?

Also the first half of the story the good guys are pitted against an adversaries who is one step ahead of them, but in the second half this suddenly changes. Maybe the most criticism can be levelled at the pace of the movie. It takes little time to reflect on things and have some silent moments(there is however a great one)something that the anime Ghost in the Shell 2 has(it is the one that I did see).

Conclusion
A fair action movie with nice visuals and superficial depth, but a bit hampered by not daring to delve more deeper and not attempting to stand out. As such it is more a mainstream action movie than anything else and thus eventually it will probably be remembered as that other Ghost in the Shell movie.

Scarlett Johansson is not a good actress. Ghost in the Shell is not a good movie. It has brief moments of lucidity, but it is essentialy the filmic equivalent of an AA member that has fallen off the wagon. This was a missed opportunity.

Ghost in the Shell makes me understand how he must have felt.. this film is a work of art and has meaning. Both because of the creativity of Shirow Masamune and the talent of Rupert Sanders. I have never felt myself more out of touch with the critics.. the criticisms aimed at this film seem to ignore that fact that you cannot have everything in a film.. you have to choose what to keep, what to discard, in order to focus on the elements of the story which have the most meaning and are the most entertaining.. On this point Rupert made the right call and went beyond the source material to create something new WTF JUST WATCH IT!

They clearly put some thought into the film and took care to honour the original material while also changing the plot enough so it isn't just a retelling of the original movie. The Major's character is well fleshed out as is the cyborg antagonist. The same can't be said for the supporting characters who are all pretty one dimensional, I feel more time was needed to flesh out their personalities. Aramaki especially was bordering on being interesting with some great scenes, he should have been utilised more. Besides one typical blockbuster defying logic in a scene near the end the action overall was extremely well shot and visually interesting. I also believe the white washing controversy actually effected the critical ratings GITS received which isn't very fair. Expand

I will addressI don't know what reviewers smoked but I think Ghost in the Shell is probably best Sci-Fi movie of this century closely followed by Mad Max. I read some reviews and I am flabbergasted by level of dishonesty some people express. I will address those bellow:

1) Some anime fans view the movie as sacrilege of their beloved relic or whatever. I don't care.

2) It explores the same theme and brings nothing original. Yeah, because a millionth romantic comedy brings so much of original stuff. 3) It has to few african americans in the cast. Ok, I don't feel a need to address this one.

Ghost in the shell is visually stunning movie. That alone should make it a must see (I saw it in IMAX). The story itself was to me very interesting and it is the best depiction of cyberpunk world I have ever seen. The pacing of the story may seem to be slow, however I really like it as it fits very well with the overall artistic approach. Very well done.

Based on the low review scores, and lack of buzz I went into this movie not expecting much, and the nearly empty theatre we arrived to didn't offer any additional encouragement.

What I got was potentially the most visually stunning movie I've ever seen, evocative of Blade Runner, but with effects that every advantage of the 35 years of filmmaking technology since its release. The 3D was utterly stunning.

What it had in style, it may have fallen short of in substance. The trailers gave away the main plot point, which would have been predictable anyway. In some ways it fell short of the original anime. And of course there are the understandable criticisms about the casting decisions that seem to be hurting it more than anything else.

Which is a shame, because taken at face value, Ghost in the Shell's visual appeal – the eery ambience of a futuristic city cluttered with vaporeal holograms in which it takes place, the uncanny valley of fusion between man and machine it explores, and the mastery of 3D space it exudes (so convincing I found myself both dodging projectiles and craning to get a better view) – make up for all its shortcomings in spades.

I was not expecting an outright butchery. This film is completely devoid of any of the depth, nuance, or intelligence that made the franchise special. In its place are some of the most tired cliches and terrible writing I've seen. The plot is painfully unoriginal and predictable; the dialogue is drab and unnatural, characters lack any personality or dimension, performances range from mildly interesting to plain awful, visuals are cribbed superficially, even the action is unremarkable despite all the flash. The whole thing basically screams, "hackneyed and lazy". The worst part, however, is how dumb it treats the viewer. Everything must be spelled out as plainly as possible, having no faith in the audience to pick up anything on their own. I didn't mean to sound so snobby when I sat down to write this review, but it's as appropriate here as it ever is. This is a stupid movie that took a brilliant property and packaged it for stupid people. If there's any shred of consolation it's that perhaps it will intrigue newcomers enough to explore the rest of the franchise. I just wish it wasn't making such a bad first impression in the process. It mixes alot up of the original movie with some of the series' other seasons and puts its own spin on things. That's not necessarily a bad thing as it ends up pulling it's own weight and standing as more than just an adaptation. The film still stars the original Characters but with a twist. It uses different names for a few of the characters including the major but there is a point to it as everything gets explained as the film progresses. The visuals are by far the best thing about the film. The special effects are gorgeous, camera shots are well positioned, and damn this cyberpunk city is beautifully recreated with holograms and technological advancements. It's pure eye candy and it will be the best thing to see for fans of the series. The acting is pretty good and the characters are portrayed well so no complaints there. The action sequences are also a highlight and have style similar to that of John wick (my fav action movie of all time) so that's a definite plus for me. The story is unique as it takes some sense from the original movie and mixes them with all new material an writing. It's a unique way of making it feel familiar but at the same time more than just a readaptation. Overall I would say if you liked ghost in the shell you will like this. Most people hate on it because of "whitewashing" characters but if they wouldve seen the movie they would see this is not the case. If you're a fan more than likely you will enjoy this one and I do recommend it. I wasn't a huge fan but this movie pulled me into its world and characters and I hope to see more in the future. Like I said earlier this isn't the ghost in the shell you think you know or seen. It's familiar while different and makes for one hell of a good anime adaptation and well worth your time. 8/10 Expand

While the visuals are okay - if a little CGI-heavy - they can't distract from the abysmal script, monotone delivery and virtually non-existent character development.

With such a wealth of source material, I just can't understand how little substance there was to this film. We saw nothing of Section 9's camaraderie, nor did we see the Major acting like a kick-ass leader, organising the team, playing to their individual strengths. She was like a stroppy teenager the whole way through the movie. The complex relationship between her and Batou, or between her and "the old ape", were also mostly absent.

Gone also are any meaningful philosophical discussions on the nature of intelligence - such a core part of the GITS franchise. Instead we get a lacklustre rehash of the Robocop plot. I appreciate there are time constraints with any movie, but the 1995 movie managed to fit plenty of philosophy into its 20-minute-shorter running time, while being just as action packed.

Oh and the music, the all important music that was such a big part of the 1995 anime and the TV shows? Nope, noting remotely comparable made it into this movie. It's just dull, generic-sounding background music from start till finish. This was all the more surprising given that the music in the first trailer was pretty good.

The only redeeming features in my opinion:

- the aesthetics of the city and technology was close to that of the source material
- I thought Pilou AsbƦk made for a pretty cool Batou
- Kaori Momoi was surprisingly touching as the widow encountered towards the end of the film

My advice to fellow GITS fans: pretend this movie didn't happen, and pray for GITS SAC 3rd GIG!

Ghost in the Shell has been adapted from the original, beloved and beloved content to understand what makes this franchise special and work well on the big screen. It looks good and does not feel like it is just copying the anime and the beauty of the manga instead of capturing what makes them separate to begin with. This stumbled in the third act and did not bring the point to a satisfactory conclusion. But Ghost in the Shell successfully solved the problem.

Eye-candy with good story. Though lots of people beating each other up could be boring, the film somehow pulls it off to make this attractive. I will watch it again.

I've been a huge fan of the Ghost in the Shell series from the beginning, and the 2017 movie is by far my favorite iteration of it. (Be warned, I also rather enjoyed Ghost in the Shell: Arise as well, but I can tell you why.)

Ghost in the Shell from the beginning has always been about tackling a few ideas that are consistently played with over the different iterations.

Things like: What it really means to be human, the concept of primacy of consciousness, individual autonomy as a self-evident virtue, how do you deal with an ever increasing access to information as well as human ability, how do you try to seek out morals and justice in a corrupt or imperfect society, how do you deal with loss of identity in the face of technological integration with humans, how do you identify the real threats to forward human progress, or the real culprits of legitimate human suffering and deal with the problem, etc.

Over all of this, has always been the trouble of presenting these concepts to the Japanese public at large. There is a lot of battle and war to overcome in the very deeply ingrained nationalistic nihilism that is practiced by Japan's wider culture.

Because of this, many of the earlier and more 'classic' GitS pieces have dealt heavily in themes of nationalism, nihilism, working from within the governmental system always as much as possible, etc.

A lot of the smaller storyline pieces deal with the geopolitical and socioeconomic consequences of Japan's culture continuing to influence the country 50 years from now, while singling out varying levels of political corruption and trying to define a real yardstick for measuring when it dips over into true, naked evil. Consequently, the more overarching themes are woven into the Major's personal character arcs to deliver the deeper philosophical messages.

This is important background information because as you begin to examine GitS: Arise, you can see more and more of those original 'audience concerns' being pulled back and stripped away as the audience is far more familiar with the characters and who they are as people, far beyond that of just literary constructs.

There was a lot of collaboration with the creative lead from the original movies involved with this film, and it really shows. Creating a movie that is being marketed to an American audience allows them to sell the ideas of individualism, responsibility of action, etc, far more easily and purely than the original content was able to. And they absolutely took the opportunity to do so.

The story involved doesn't really present us with the 'Major Kusanagi that's been doing wetwork for years' which we've seen the most of previously. This piece is about creating that character, the setting, and most of Section 9 during a short amount of time.

Then they had to make sure they were doing it in a believable fashion to a wide variety of new minds, so that they can push even deeper into some more of the traditional sociopolitical complexity that GitS is often very heavily associated with using later content.

I can say this. Every character that we were given reason to care about was excellently played and sold, and had a story to tell far beyond just the lines of dialogue they were delivering. The casting and acting were singularly top notch, through and through. I have never liked a version of Batou better than this one.

Even though at times it felt like I was being bombarded by special effects, every single effect that I examined was well thought out and chosen. From the base platform and modifications of the Major's sidearm, to the way the road driving HUDs and road markers developed from existing technology and usage, and on, and on, and on.

From one of the most fluid tactical assaults by a 'Hollywood SF unit' I've ever seen portrayed, to the amount that Chief Aramaki represented a cultural link with Japan which the movie utterly needed to truly anchor it, there was somebody with a serious thinking cap on involved with every single detail of this film.

Scarlett Johansson. Oh, my love. She is every bit the Kusanagi that any actress could have managed in the role, and far more than most would have.

That being said I think in this movie Batou has the superior character. Scarlett Johansson stunningly nails a performance that will never win her an Oscar, even if it should.

If you can't tell, I highly recommend the film. Please go see it. Immediately. It is 100% through and through Ghost in the Shell, in every glory that means.

You'll need to wait for the characters to be established before we can get to the really complex stories, and expect that this story has been tailored to the viewing audience. You may just find however, as I did, that someone out there sold their soul a few years back so that ScarJo could nail a perfect 2017 live-action Ghost in the Shell movie.

First off: I don't care about the whole ScarJo casting thing. The point of The Major was always that she had an artificial body of unspecified race, and going by pure aesthetics SJ is not a bad lookalike.

No, the far more offensive thing about this movie is that it was made at all. Just like with the crapfest that was the recent Beauty and the Beast, studios don't seem to understand that for animation the art style is a huge part of the storytelling, so a live-action remake (replete with tons of greenscreen CGI, ironically) is all but guaranteed to be a soulless husk of the original. And so it is.

I don't want to go on a huge rant about the original, which is legitimately a classic even if some people get a little too overexcited about its supposed thematic depth ("what if people were... robots?"). It came practically out of nowhere with an incredibly original vision and gorgeously detailed animation that Western audiences had never really seen before. This new movie pretty much takes the overlay of that and copies some iconic scenes (shot-for-shot in some cases), but turns it into just another bland Hollywood sci-fi action outing.

Just watch the original. It holds up well and will still be enjoyed decades from now. Meanwhile I'll be amazed if anyone even remembers the ridiculous ScarJo version in a year.

Coming from a fan of GitS since the original movie, and having watched the 3 films and 3 series.

This movie was awesome. I went with a homie with whom we used to watch the series together in our pre-college years. He loved it, I loved it.

Here goes:
1: Many references to the whole of GitS. If you know your stuff, this movie offers many deep and subtle references to various series of the whole franchise. Not only the blatant scenes from the first movie. I won't go any further because it will contain spoilers but. *Note the crane episode from GitS Sac2*

Story: it's an overlay of the original movie, delving into a story arc that was not presented in detail in either of the GitS franchise. SO it's not meant to be a repetition of the original, rather exploring more deeply into the past of Majour.
And in itself a very original and well deserved GitS artwork.

It is not dumbed down like most say, it is a clever reassembling and introduction of the series and I can see that the Director knew his stuff pretty darn well.

Thing is: the Director IS NOT trying to resauce and remake a masterpiece of the first movie. Instead he's taking from all of that and telling people: look if you want to know more of Gits, watch the rest of the stuff. Here I'm trying to tell a standalone story that delves deeper into the origin story and psychology of a young Majour. And it is well done.

Pls consider this: The movie 1 and 2 are in chronology. the series Sac1 and Sac2 have their own stories and chronology that are different and cannot be situated in the same timeline as the movies. Solid State Society can be argued to take place after SaC2.
Arise is another spinoff in another parallel universe from the other two sources.

In this logic, this movie is in itself a parallel universe and standalone on its own. but its story is very well that of the psychology and character development consistent with the others.
Remarkable, clever, well acted. (Scarlett acting a emotionally awkward robot human cyborg is quite legit) And for all those who are whining about why Scarlett, the movie kinda justifies it itself. So here goes.

It definitely has flaws and is not as good as either the original anime films or TV series, but it does an excellent job of building the world that Ghost in the Shell is so known for. ScarJo does a fine job portraying the Major, even if she does take some getting used to. There are definitely a few parts that felt rushed, a few moments that make you question the decisions of the director, but overall it is a good movie with an interesting if not completely original plot. If nothing else it is a great set up for a sequel which I very much hope gets made. I'm sure a second one would be better and more loyal to the original stories now that Major's "origin" story is taken care of. Expand

Like Constantine, this film has characters with the same names, but who act and look completely differently and a completely different plot yet still manages to be a good film. If you stripped all the "Ghost In The Shell" bits out of this film it would be much better. The film runs to about 1h 45 minutes and there are never any dull parts or filler. The plot is more like Robocop or the Raiden parts of Metal Gear than the original. I started off sceptical as I loved the original, but by the end I was won over by the interesting world and new back story. If you can put aside your love of the original and see this as a completely different thing, you'll probably enjoy this. Expand

Despite going in with cautious expectations, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this was a decent movie.

It always had some huge boots to fill - and while it's nowhere near as deep or philosophical - the setting is great, presented with some fantastic visuals backed by a superb soundtrack. It also has a decently passable story based in the GitS universe - an original story, I might add, though with some elements and scenes obviously lifted directly from the original material. It's obviously been adapted more for the mainstream audience, but it's certainly not bad.

Complaints? The lack of depth compared to its source material does it The characters could have definitely been fleshed out more, with the Major being a little too stoic compared to the anime, and the other members of Section 9 not getting anywhere near enough lines. It also doesn't nearly fill the previously mentioned big boots, but when judged on its own merits, is still a solid film.

Even so, they still use guns with old-school bullets (than often miss their target) and they drive their own cars. Scarlett Johansson has her brain implanted into an artificial body and becomes a crime fighter. But it couldn't be that simple: She has to have an existential crisis about who she really is. Despite the noisy encounters, trite plot and advanced paranoia, this film's best asset is its cool visuals. Expand

The result is a film that looks slick but lack substance, character and soul.

If you are a fan on the anime series, you likely love the characters and tone. This film is faithful visually and tonally to the anime series, which pays homage to the 1995 animated film here and there. It is not a retelling of the 1995 film, or any one anime episode plot. This stands faithfully shoulder to shoulder with the anime properties, but is westernized and simplified in its approach to philosophy. Great score, great casting (even the Major), faithful tone and character relationships, and one of the best live action adaptations of any animated property. On it's own merits, it will pale in comparison to the 1995 animated film, which is smarter and methodical in its exploration of the existential questions it asks. This is a sci-fi-fi action film that plays it safe, but establishes characters we love with origin stories we hadn't seen before. Most of the flak this release is getting is by people who want it to have the philosophical sophistication and weight of the 1995 film (or upset ScarJo is white). The anime series didn't tackle such heady themes, and likewise this release doesn't either. It's an origin story that predates the events of the anime, and doesn't have any complimentary qualities to the 1995 original film. You won't be disappointed if you appreciate the anime series. This is faithfully executed, so long as you base your comparisons on the series and not the 1995 original. Expand

Let me establish this from the get-go: Ghost in the Shell 2017 tries to integrate scenes from the 1995 anime Ghost in the Shell movie with good intentions, but some of them come out as interesting references while others are infuriating evidence that shows those scenes are there just to be cool and appeal massive audiencies. The story isn't based on the original film but on the manga, which makes it even worse.

The environment looks fake, both in form and looks, the city doesn't really make sense most of the time with bizarre and unrealistic houses and settings that were not there in the original story, and all the technology presented in the movie is used as an excuse to show special effects that sometimes are unnecesary and just make the experience worse.

That being said the script could have been executed in a poorer way, altough isn't perfect and really far from what the 1995 movie could offer, both on depth and meaning but it won't dissapoint the biggest part of the audience. Scarlett's performance prevent some scenes from being cringeworthy, Pilou AsbƦk makes a really good Batou against all odds and Takeshi Kitano's performance is really good too despite the fact that his character making no sense.

Ghost in the Shell tries really hard to not fail at what it does, it has unforgivable mistakes but that shouldn't take away that most people won't even notice them and will be impressed by the special effects. A weak 6 for me. It could have been worse.

I am an avid Ghost in the Shell fan, so my experience was always going to be overshadowed by the anime that came before. But I did not expect such cinematic splendor and costume/set design.

Story: Dead -It is dead because it chopped up story from the previous movies and tried to Frankenstein them together, whilst adding in new backstory that only made fans cringe. There was no life there, Rupert should have tried to move forward with new content instead of trying to play it safe like Star Wars Episode 7.

Characters: Dead -The life that was brought into the anime characters was lost here. There was an attempt to give "The Major" and emotional core that amplified her so called "Ghost". However in reality (Anime) the majors ghost was not highlighted by any emotions whatsoever, only her observance as to the lack of said feelings. Her philosophical and analytical nature was what gave her the notion of a "Ghost". So in a sense, they restructured the very definition of who the Major was.

Batou attempted to be a good buddy like he was in the anime, but he never really had the chance, the story moved too quickly and his connection was lost. I think the Major had too much baggage going on to allow anyone else to show themselves.

The side characters (Section 9 crew) were all just background fluff and didn't even matter, which is good because I don't think I could handle any more characters being misrepresented.

Aramaki was alright, I think Kitano was just used for novelty purposes, and these days he is just like a Japanese Harrison Ford, grumpy and only around for the money.

Set Design: -Alive. Alive in every way, the world they used was full of cyberpunk goodness stripped right out of the heart of the anime. Every detail was accounted for and it truly was the highlight of the entire film. I will include the background characters and extras into this as well, they were all very much apart of the world and the state of society was quite evident.

Sound: -Alive, but misplaced. The music was fantastic, but never seemed to show up on time, it was always late for the party. Even the music for the into sequence(for the anime) didn't arrive until the credits. For them to leave out the song was advertise with the new intro out of the new intro.......there are no words.

I like this movie a lot, I will be picking it up on 4k Blu-Ray asap, because I am only going back for the beauty of the cinematography and CGI. The story in this movie will be forgotten and left out of all the ancient tomes of the Ghost in the Shell universe.

It’s a well told and well executed take on the original film and I must be honest, I kind of liked it, I thought it had a decent running plot, what it recreated it did well and it sold me on the whole thing. The performances from Scarlett Johannson and Michael Pitt really made the film stand out. Its only issue is that it sticks too close to story lines that we have already been told and it doesn’t have enough trust in its audience to not signpost things too much, nor does it have enough of the nuance that the original film had. That being said though, with the bar being set so low for Anime adaptations, this stands head and shoulders above its contemporaries and I hope it is a success because I would like to think it’s a lead to more films like it and I wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel. If you are a fan of Anime then I would say give it a go because it might have something for you,, though I would expect you to be a bit more critical than someone with no prior knowledge. This film is trying to get a balance between the two markets though I suspect it will succeed in one more than the other. In short, I think it’s a good film, but I’m not sure how it will stand up as time goes on, though I think it should be praised a lot more than it’s bashed. Expand

I love how the Major has an actual back story now and you can get behind the philosophical contents of her struggle. I feel like they did a great job of improving and maturing the story, so that its less about "wow isn't this setting and idea just so awesome" and married that to a more human, digestible and complete narration. The movie ended up being really the opposite of what some naysayers thought it would be - it added substance to complete LORE and the franchise that is GIT, IMO. The animation was so cool for the time, but focused more on the idea of how awesome the animation and the world that animation represented was (in part because we hadn't realized in the real world some of those ideas yet - we have now they aren't as fantastical anymore). The movie added the human element and made the mystery of the "puppet master" make more sense as well. Scarlet was of course awesome, bad ass and as cute as ever. Watching the anime last night we were reminded, the Major doesn't look Asian and neither does most of her team (just Togusa and the man in charge). Yet they did a good job of explaining as well why she does look they way she does. Special effects were cool and there were multiple scenes that were direct transfers from the anime that made me smile. The closing scene is freaking awesome. They even played the original opening song from the anime for the credits. Loved it. Expand

After we watched the movie we realized yet again that all the critics are cheats and liars. It looks like they didn't get their cut for advertising the movie.

This movie comes from the producers of Marvel Studios (Avi Arad) and even DreamWorks. If you like the quality of Marvel Cinematic Universe then you will definitely love Ghost In The Shell (2017) movie. Here's why:

1. The visuals, presentation and esthetics of this movies are fantastic. Even the music was well made and well used.
2. There is good drama and tension.
3. Good acting.
4. The tone and sense of mystery are so accurate and precise.
5. The movie captures the Cyber Punk fantasy and the vision of the original Ghost In The Shell (anime or manga).
6. You get all the basics and essence of the original in one movie. The story is good but let's be honest, it's not surprising or new.
7. Great action.
8. Every scene has some charm out it: Camera, Filming, Editing, Style. There was never a dull moment.
9. Quality science fiction that delivers on creativity and imagination. It asks smart questions about humanity, philosophy, crime, ethics, the future and so on.
10. If you give this movie any score less then an 8, you don't know what you are talking about. If you expect more then you should see the original anime or manga.

The visuals are good, the sound is great, and there are some genuinely enjoyable moments in this film. The biggest flaw is they are spaced too far between a plot focused on trying to be more profound than it is.

Pros - amazing cyber-punk visualization, good action, acting performance, sound and Doge Easter egg at the end :) Cons - it's hard to understand plot if you haven't seen anime or read manga, I don't like how they try to explain philosophy about "ghost" and "the shell" and sometimes boring.
But I'll recommend watch this movie even if you feel skeptical about plot, Scarlet or smth else, I am defiantly sure that if you liked anime, you'll find smth interesting in this action film too.

Well sir, luckily it's not like that. It's not even better than the 1995 animated flick, but you can see how hard did they work to bring you such a great expirience (like The Angry Birds Movie). You can see from the story that they changed something from the anime, and some of them are impressive, even though i didn't expect some creepy imagery in some scenes. From a visual/sound effect standpoint, we're talking about a cybernetic version of Avatar, because the way they create the city and its minimal parts was like they were saying to you "This is what we can do with CGI now!". Everyone was complaining about ScarJo being The Major instead of a Japanese/Asian actress, but in the end, the final result was pretty good (and also a demonstration that she is not only the Black Widow we all know and love). The soundtrack was the only thing that was actually better than the anime. After LEGO Batman, Lorne Balfe returns to the ring alongside Clint Mansell to make what could be the greatest score of 2017 (for now). In the end, Ghost In The Shell didn't want to be like the Anime, but instead, it wanted to be an upgraded version of the generic action movie, with a promising story, some mind-blowing visual/sound effects and some great acting. So, ScarJo ... meh, not my fav but against my better judgement, I saw it regardless. I mean "LUCY" was not that bad, was it? Should have followed my instincts. To begin with, I have never, nor in this movie, found ScarJo to be compelling. Bad acting... bad script ... left me utterly disinterested by the end of the movie which mercifully, I missed the climax refilling my popcorn .... but I was just glad it was over. Felt bad that juliette binoche was in this stink bomb. What a waste of talent. The one redeeming point of this evening was ... seeing a different movie, "LIFE", which I had intended to see to begin with. So if you have not seen "ghost" yet, then skip it and see "LIFE" instead and your money will be better spent. This is the last time will will be giving ScarJo the benefit of the doubt. Expand

The "superhero on roof top" ending scene is making this film really cheap. 1 star for the title, 1 star for Scarlett Johansson, 1 star for the stunning Geisha props from Weta Workshop.

Boy, does this thing look and sound amazing, though. It's just a shame there's such a mixed bag of a screenplay at the center of this fantastically designed slog through transhumanism and other traditional cyberpunk thematics. Fans of the original film, television series, and/or manga may have something to latch on to here, but for the uninitiated, this film may be a particular challenge to commit to. Expand

The only thing dragging down this movies score are bitter anime elitist who wanted a frame by frame remake of the original and writers who spent way too much time in their colleges safe space complaining about white people. This is the American version of Ghost in the Shell in every regard, also known as Lady Robocop. The actors all do very well in their parts, but none of them actually managed to match their characters from the anime and manga. There are a lot of superfluous scenes that felt very much made for American audiences, and ultimately this becomes the classic American story of "discovering who you are in the world", which the Japanese version was not about at all.

But that's okay, you will enjoy it if you watch it, but you can definitely wait for this to come out on Netflix.

It was if the director slopped lukewarm spaghetti-o's down onto a plate and handed it to me. There was absolutely no heart in this movie, the only character that gave me any twinge of emotion was her mother. Visually the movie looked great. The writing was boring and uninspired. This movie holds your hand throughout and treats the audience as if they do not have a brain. Or should I say "your soul, your 'ghost'." Absolutely pitiful script and I feel for Johansson and her supporting cast for having to read it. However bad it was they did their best with the material they were given. Throw in some sloppily applied lines about finding out who Johansson's character is and how she should view herself as either a robot or human that have the depth of a roadside puddle, and you have a forgettable, safe, and slightly insulting film that does little to no justice to its verbose and much more impactful source material.

4/10 for its good looks, the adequate job the cast did with so little to work with, and the absolute disregard shown in honoring the source material.

I joined up to Metacritic to post this review.

The Ghost In The Shell franchise is close to my heart, from the release of the original 8-issue run of the english comic/manga in 1995 to the recent Arise TV series. I even once drew a comic cover for another franchise which was a deliberate GitS tribute.

I watched this new live-action version last night and have struggled to settle on a score… Staying away from the trailers (and yet aware of some of the controversies), I tried to view it with fresh eyes, not knowing what would unfold.

On one hand, the aesthetics of the movie were way beyond what I expected; art direction, sets, costumes, sound were all did an excellent job of recreating a believable GitS world. The actors were fine, mostly recognisable in their roles and got me invested. I especially liked the film's handling of why the Major looked non-Asian.

Unfortunately, while expecting a somewhat less philosophical approach for a Hollywood remake, the main point of the original comics/movie was almost missing entirely - can a machine (shell) have a soul (ghost) and what would be the difference between such an entity and a human? It was not so much about the Major as to what she discovered and what it meant for her.

One of my concerns about a 2017 remake is that such existential questions about humanity were fresh and new in 1989 (Japanese GitS comic run) however, as they approach reality, such themes have been thoroughly explored in great depth by other films, games and tv shows in the meantime.

Remaking the original GitS would not bring new arguments to an already bloated debate and is perhaps why the makers didn't spend too much time asking questions such as 'can one's consciousness be uploaded to the net' and 'can there be life without a body'.

It's a shame because questions like these have always made up a big part of GitS and I have to remind myself that this is a very different version. It leans towards other common GitS themes such as political intrigue and corporate conspiracies, but they were underpinned by subject matter that the 2017 remake, sadly, refrains from taking a deep dive into.

Having digested it, I would rate the movie as a 6. It set out to do something different, perhaps more palatable, to the original GitS stories and more or less achieved it. However, for the sheer amount of homages, nods and references to other parts of the franchise (each of them brought a smile to my face), I will give it a +1.

The use of the original GitS movie theme for the end credits alone is also worth a mention. I didn't think they would actually use the iconic piece of music by Kenji Kawai and I must admit it sent shivers down my spine! One goes to the cinema for such experiences!

AnIt's unfortunate when the substance of a good story gets buried under layers of cinematic style, keeping the essence of the underlying narrative from shining through, but that's precisely the problem with this live action anime feature. An over-reliance on action sequences and stunning (but decidedly excessive) visual effects dilutes the relevance and poignancy of this film, depriving viewers of the most important attribute it has to impart. Scarlett Johansson's staid, detached bad-ass routine is growing a little stale, too, a virtual carbon copy of the performances she gave in "Lucy" and "Under the Skin." And then there's the movie's tendency to borrow from numerous other sources, like "Blade Runner," "The Matrix," "Cloud Atlas," "Ex Machina" and "Total Recall," to name a few. Pass on this one -- you won't miss much. Expand

Plays like a bad remake of Robocop 2014 (let that sink in for a moment) with a smattering of the greatest hits of GitS.
A bland, underdeveloped mess of a film without any of the nuance of Mamoru Oshii's original film version. The entire cast sleepwalks their way through bland hamfisted exposition (even Takeshi Kitano seems to be phoning it in) with the exception of Kaori Momoi who gives a good performance.
Clint Mansell & Lorne Balfe's score while decent is just more sci-fi ambience and lacks the soul of Kenji Kawaii's original (or the subtle meaning that it contained)
It's a real shame that this couldn't have been directed by someone like Neil Blomkamp or Alex Garland. Because after seeing this I wouldn't trust Rupert Sanders to direct traffic.
