Has the right look and feel of the original very well acted but I will admit the story is a mixed bag. On the story point it's a pro's vs. con's deal seeing how the source material can be a bit abstract at times and or hard to follow. I can see why they went in this direction by watering down the story for more mass appeal. For the one's crying foul on the ScarJoe front she plays the major perfectly, stilted and emotionless just like the anime. The major is a real person but all robot and that is conveyed really well in the movie. It's a shame more people didn't take a chance and go see this, people fail to realize by not supporting these types of movies even with minor flaws studios are gonna be less inclined to take risks on materiel of a similar fashion. If your reading this please go watch it and if you feel the same way I do, get on here and leave a positive comment. Lets start with the elephant in the room. A lot of people said Scarlett Johansson as main character was “whitewashing”. Those have not seen the movie or understood the story. It is a fundamental point in the story, logical and functional. I give an explanation at the end with a spoiler warning. Back to the review. Ghost in the Shell is one of my favorite franchise. I see it as a realistic prediction of the future except that I think those changes will take longer in real life. It is based on the Manga by Masamune Shirow and the Anime from 1995 is a true masterpiece. It has a Cyberpunk setting and plays in 2029. Many humans have augmented bodies (Cyborgs) as those have advantages like computer interfaces, more durability, strength and adaptations for many tasks. Unmodified humans are already viewed as inferior. However crime has also evolved as you can hack into these parts or brains or use those augmented bodies for crimes not possible before. The main characters work for the special unit Section 9 that is specialized in those fields. Protagonist Miria Killian is the first human with a fully artificial body (except brain) who got it after surviving a terrorist attack as she and her family searched refuge in Japan. She works for Section 9 and is indebted to Hanka Robotics who gave her the new body. As they explore a crime she finds strange traces that will change everything. I end this here to avoid spoilers. The story is different from the Anime and I say it is a good decision as they cant improve the original. Other adaptations failed horrible in this regard. The story is familiar and refreshing at the same time. It works from start to finish and we left very satisfied the cinema. The actors are well chosen. Scarlett Johansson is brilliantly good and I see this as strength of the movie. Pilou Asbaek is a fitting Batou that nails his role. Takeshi Kitano is one of my favorite actors and that he plays Daisuke Aramaki is incredibly good. I must also praise Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouelet and Peter Ferdinando as Cutter. A truly good cats. The sets, costumes and special effects capture the feeling of the source material and enhance the movie. Overall I see this as one of a few good live action adaptations and like that they do not attempt to improve the original. Compare it to Cowboy Bebop for example. I give a 10/10 as it was a positive surprise. Spoiler warning: The experiments with the artificial bodies by Hanka Robotics are highly risky and have a lot of illegal components. They wanted human guinea pigs that will not be missed. They use members of an underground movement that protested against the government as those will not be missed in a greater scale. Even more they hide Motoko Kusanagi as Mira Killian who is a foreigner and refuge that has no relatives. If something happens to her not many questions will be asked. Just look how refugees are treated in the EU, USA or other countries and no one cares in a greater scale (Observations not my beliefs!) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a fast paced, futuristic sci fi thriller, with a particularly futuristic urban setting, a bit like what I've seen in clips of Blade Runner and the sort. I can't say I fully followed the plot but I found it an engrossing watch for the most part regardless. There is some pretty decent CGI present and I thought Scarlett Johansson did well playing such a complicated hybrid person/android - she is certainly a curious and determined character, at the least.

I thought this was a decent sci-fi film, although im not a big fan of futuristic style sci-fi films, I'd say this one is worth a watch - the main theme it covers being identity. An intriguing, entertaining watch, with a decent main performance by Johansson.

I saw the original awhile back, and really loved it, so i was definitely worried going into this remake. What a relief to say that the remake is quite good, and its quite good for a number of reasons: firstly...Scarlett Johannson is really good in the title role, she does have this other worldly quality about her which was perfectly suited to the character. Secondly the visuals are astonishing, everything from the world views, the city scapes, the cyber punk stlye was beautifully evoked. And thirdly, i got the sense that this was a film made with love and respect for the original, whilst at the same time, looking ahead and being ambitious enough to be its own movie. I was really impressed by it. Expand

Better than expected when I don't take into account the white washing, although I was still a little disappointed. I would see the sequel because this is one of my genres.

The movie itself really isn't trend setting in this current day and age. I suspect the is a weird result of its original anime being so influential. Twenty plus years ago when it came out it was a relatively unusual, groundbreaking event, influencing such seminal works as The Matrix. The Matrix and other movies then in turn, influenced other movies making the tropes from the original GitS cliche.

The whole concept of exploring what makes you human really had nothing new in this movie that you couldn't see in a dozen other movies that handled it a bit better.

That being said, Scarlett Johansson did a good job as the Major. I felt she did convey the spirit behind the character, but unfortunately not enough to raise the move above "just ok". I was especially pleased with Bataou and how he was portrayed, but once again they didn't give him a big enough part to do much more than give some interest. The rest of the characters were just blips in the movie.

Now we get to the white washing. This clouded my opinion of the movie the whole time. The movie could have been done with any Japanese actress and I probably would have liked the movie better. Once again not because SJ did bad, but because the knowledge of the white washing left a bad taste in my mouth. I guess as I get older, the harder it is to look past stuff like that.

The movie did try to give a partial explanation of a white actress playing a Japanese character late in the movie, but it was less of any sort of in depth story idea, and rather something pieced in to explain why the major has a white body and not a Japanese body. Basically it was a reason they could use on why they went with SJ rather than it being a real plot point.

The good: Decent sci-fi, nice choreography, and an ok story.

The bad: White washing with a bit trope thrown in.

I feel a lot of criticism comes from people offended that Major is played by a white actress. A Youtuber went around Japan asking people what they think and every Japanese person interviewed didn't care. A lot of them were actually stoked on who they chose to play Major. It really doesn't effect the quality of the film in any way. Expand

Review title: Team Machine vs. Team Human 101 for younger generations

I read a bunch of the reviews here. I saw, liked and was confused by the 1995 anime classic. I think Johanson was inevitable AND an Asian actress would have been preferable (the Asian mom in the film is wonderfully refreshing; why not the lead?).

I'm still amazed by how many film critics lack the integrity to criticize without coming up with improvements or solutions to the deficiencies they perceive. One of very few ethical ways to review a film in words is to take teh view, "If I were the scriptwriter or in charge of the writers room, what would I have done differently?"

The movie made about 1/4 of its money in China. Especially if these themes are new to Chinese audiences, I think this is a good thing. For the rest of us, one reviewer suggested the sights in Ghost are tediously unfamilar. This rings true for me too. Why are there so many hero shots of the gaudy 3D hologram ads? Is this the point of the film? The future is simply--ugly?

Another reviewer describes the script as a clotheslines for action scenes to be hung on like wet laundry. I find this striking and accurate. It applies to many films. It's perhaps the perfect structural metaphor for a large fraction of all commerical action movie scripts--asking no more complex question than, "What are the opening grosses?"

The "ghost" of the original Bladerunner is apparent, as many reviewers note. This leads into how I would write Ghost in the Shell 2: Identify the conflict of values you wish to target (individuality of the human soul, justice as a choice souls can make... vs. Team Machine, all the forces making humans more machine like and un-feeling). Then imagine how to SHOW not tell this conflict in visual terms. Perhaps even with this structural clarity, it's still challenging to beat or go beyond the script accomplishments of the first Blade Runner movie.

The story is easy to follow and there is no plot holes as most of the stuff is scratching your head until later when it finally makes sense with them filling the gaps from earlier on. there is a lot of cultural diversity in this, and it being set in a far future Japan, the major (hehe) of the cast and civilians are Japanese, which is was a good choice. they made Scarlet Johannson Major because she looks the part, and what i can remember of the original source, she was meant to be Caucasian, which she is. the action is good, and the invisible fight scenes were spot on. it could be better, but at least it wasn't utter **** well worth the watch, as it does the fan service justice. some people who watched the originals might seem it boring, because most of the time when this happens, is because they have seen it already in the originals, and well that is normal for anything, not that its bad, just that they expected it. so for all the people whitewashing the films, if the Japanese like it and dont mind why the **** would you care, it is based off a japanese anime for god sake, and i think the origin of the franchise would know if the movie was good or not Expand

I don't understand how people can think the movie is whitewashed. The Major was originally Japanese before her accident, which the movie even addressed. The Major chose her shell and her shell is caucasian. I'm very sorry to tell the people who know nothing about GITS, but her shell is actually white... I thought the plot was great and even the scenes recreated from the anime were great. The acting was great as well. The Major does lack emotion in the Anime and that is also portrayed a lot in the movie. The original creator was on board with the adaptation and even Scarlett as the lead role. It would have been against the source material if a Japanese actor played as her shell. Either way, the movie was great. The Japanese people loved it so why can't all these Americans??? My advice is go watch the movie yourself and DON'T LET ANYBODY change your opinion about it and don't be a follower like everyone else who most likely haven't even watched the originals or read it. It is however impossible to review this filmThis is one amazing looking movie here and despite controversy around casting of Scarlett Johansson in the main role, it catches the eye with visuals, while Johansson gives a stellar performance. It is however impossible to review this film and not look at Masamune Shirow's original work or it's 1995 masterful adaptation by the legend - Mamoru Oshii. Both, the original and 2017 live action movie, take a look at themes of identity, humanity and the meaning of being human. In a world of cybernetic enhancements, where does the human end and the machine start? This version however takes a different approach to the topic, more straightforward and less philosophical, seemingly more "dumbed down" version... and yet it still gets the point across. Some plot changes were disappointing and for some reason the Major seems to be more brutal and bloodthirsty in the Hollywood adaptation. Also the movie focuses more on her past, a plot point that doesn't exist in the original, as there Major knows exactly where she comes from only beginning to question her humanity after meeting the Puppet Master - a character that was turned from the original AI starting to evolve beyond its programming into a living being, to Kuze, a highly enhanced human. Whereas the original work questions the humanity itself, this movie wants to ponder the theme of Frankenstein - the creation killing its creator, this plot point in a rather silly and uninspired way, cliché, (a standard for american movie makers), to create a conflict. Some scenes are recreated from the 1995 movie here and they're a joy to watch, a feast for your eyes! Overall, this isn't all that bad, however while the original and Oshii's adaptation left me wondering for weeks, this movie is rather forgettable, saved only by the amazing cast, especially Scarlett Johansson, and visuals. Give it a watch, but for the real masterpiece, look for the 1995 version. Expand

Eyes Wide Open, Deaf Ears

"Ghost in the Shell" has live-action adaptation thanks to American feature film production and distribution studio, Paramount Pictures. The feature film is the second work by director Rupert Sanders, and the third Johansson's performance as the heroine, after her brilliant job in "Lucy" and vigorous saga Marvel's "Avengers".

At a glance, everyone infers which aspect takes all the praises. Visual effects and production design carry out fully what they were proposing, arousing a thorough immersion in that futuristic city of a reality that is not too far away, which drinks respectfully from sci-fi masterpieces as Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" and Steven Spielberg's "Minority Report". Transferring the majority of wonders of the cyberpunk book to live action was a total insanity, considering that they should overcome two major hindrances: The first one is the difficulty that surrounds manufacture of every notion of the world on which it is based, work elaborated with mastery by artistic directors, who spent whole months handcrafting many of the elements which are seen on screen, improving their meritorious work; and the second one is to free itself from American mania about maximizing even the dullest feature, losing the basic elements of the main culture. If a cinematographic production was to be regarded a masterpiece by the glory of its pictures, Paramount's work would obtain the award without delay; it's a delectation to be carried away by the gorgeous skill of the filmmaker: the visual section.

Considering that the story has the signatures of three dissonant writers, clearly, the plot, based on the comic of Masamune Shirow, was going to be saturated with a complex of different proposals and looks, with resolutions don't maintain a common term. Although screenwriters trio were very respectful by extracting the vital skeleton of the manga and the films, they palliate metaphysical burden, perhaps it wasn't decided lightly, since they had to exhibit in a flexible, congenial and seductive way a work, which is the mother for many of the existential audiovisual productions of today ("Ex Machina" "Her" or "Westworld"), in other words, what's adapt an original idea? Modernize or preserve the name of an ontological sci- fi classic? This implies that the film doesn't get the same emotional and reflective blow as 1995 movie, opting to present minimal background in the prologue, thoughtful instants where Johansson possibly broods what and/or who is and that's the whole ideological implanted environment, one more incident in which Hollywood replaces depth narrative by weapons and flagrant impressions pleasing the eye , but not to the mind, of course, a less emphatic case, but in the end, one more case, and I don't blame them, because the real guilty of that awful trend is audience, who believe that cinema is a temporary amusement, something "entertaining", something transitory.

As one of the contemporary films with more remuneration repercussions by controversial "whitewashing", we can determine (again) it's completely an unfounded affirmation. Perhaps the most vehement fans want the adaptation to be coupled with their demands and fantasies, but with the American film monster in the boss role, it was to be expected that a superstar plays the leading role. An interesting performance made by "Under the Skin" actress as Major, she's who allows the audience to follow the story, but to a certain extent, since Johansson's charming performance as a cyborg-woman doesn't get to break the chains of well-known resolutions.

"Ghost in the Shell" is wounded by nostalgia for the original movie, despite this, rating it as an independent product, is a worthy adaptation; it rebuilds some things around here, replicates identically another thing over there, however, absurdly, is another feature film that Hollywood makes fairly well. This story of origins would be the direct access to the profitable and vigorous franchise that Scarlett Johansson has been looking for and that Marvel has been unwilling to give her, but based on the grossing of the last few days, sadly, it's concluded that the American audience, one of the most fervent film consumers, has literally turned its back on it, and that isn't a good thing. The sexual burden is quietly watered down and the inherently philosophical ghost is quietly destroyed, Rupert Sanders executes a blockbuster that feels a little hollow, which concentrates on presenting magnificently to Major, establishing an enemy with moral grudges and an open ending. However, performances and technical production are high; they manage to introduce in our minds a message: the need for more "Ghost in the Shell". It's unlikely, but if they reconstruct the narrative flaws present in this one in an uncertain sequel, it would clearly be a masterpiece, but at the moment, at least in the visual thing, is already taking enlarge steps to it.

GitS was playing at the cheaper theater so I saw that today... and it was... really freaking impressive. Like, top notch, and incredibly faithful to the original OVA!
There was a quote from it that really just, rang true for a number of reasons as well, about the importance of individuality apart from the group. I can't seem to find it with a google search, though, so I'll have to look later once it comes out on Blu Ray.
Anyway, I was expecting mediocre or something in poor taste, but it was a truly impressive, resonating film and just the most gorgeous Cyberpunk spectacle I've seen in ages.
ScarJo was fantastic, and elevated by pitch-perfect filmmaking.
I honestly don't think Blade Runner 2049 is going to come as close to brilliant as this movie was, but I'm still happy for double the Cyberpunk this year!
A+ If there are any flaws to this film, I was too enthralled by the greatness to notice!

I did see the original anime so I knew the overall plot going into it. I personally found the movie extremely enjoyable and thought they did a great job catching the sci fi ascetic feel of the original anime. The whole white washing controversy was not enough to keep me from seeing it, as my main focus going in was to be entertained. I personally thought they did a great job with the multi-national supporting cast. Scarlett Johansson wasn’t anything special, but was alright all things considered. The best performances came from Batou ,Pilou Asbaek (Denmark) and Aramaki, Takeshi Kitano (Japan).
This movie is not as intellectually gripping as the original anime or even Bladerunner , but is visual stunning and overall well paced.

The film is visually spectacular with some fantastic production design in sets, costumes, etc., though the visual effects are a bit hit and miss, being top notch in some scenes, and kind of cheap in others. The direction is strongest when it copies Mamoru Oshii's film, but is merely serviceable the rest of the time. The acting performances are all solid, though no-one really stands out, and the material doesn't really give anyone much scope to shine. The story is probably the weak point, as it introduces a lot of ideas and concepts from the manga, but just doesn't have the space to really go anywhere with them, so the plot ends up being a fairly basic "who am I?/corporate villainy" story line. Overall GitS is a must for fans of the anime and cyberpunk, and probably worth a shot if you just like scifi in general. Expand

Despite having a few missteps here and there, this was still a fun popcorn flick.

For plotting, I like how they melded the two anime movies into one cohesive story and at a 2hr runtime that didnt overstay its welcome.

For the actors, I liked all in the cast...except for the actor who played Cutter...he just seemed out of place. I feel that character and the final act could have been replaced with something far more entertaining and fulfilling.

As for the visual effects, it was an absolute treat. Really hope they make an HDR-enhanced UHD of this movie, I would buy a copy ASAP.

If you have some problems with robotic body not being asian, black or at least transgender refugee, you'll probably hate it too. People who are seriously allergic to garbage villains should also be cautious.
But if you don't fall under any of these categories, your health is totally fine and you can freely enjoy this delightful cyberpunk action movie. There's not so much of them nowadays. Bato is cool btw.

Decent movie. Didnt feel like i wasted the ticket money and that's already something for a Hollywood production.
The plot is based on the 1995 OAV(not a spoiler, is clear since the first scenes)with some element picked from some of the stand alone complex episodes, but there's some characters and situations that have been heavily simplified to make the movie easier to digest for the crowds and much more predictable.
Most of the characters are pretty faithful to the original(Scarlett J. is ok in the Major's role portraiting her cold attitude, Batou is allright too, with that "old brother" behaviour toward the Major), while some are kinda weird(Aramaki lacks some of the ethics he showed in the SAC tv series and Kitano makes it kinda funny to watch, somehow, while Togusa, like in the OAV, is pretty much inexistent, while still rocking his Mateba autorevolver).Juliette Binoche character wasnt really needed and i generally don't like her acting performance.
The 2 bad guys are pretty shallow and the Major's backstory is pretty lame. Nothing else should be said.
The sci-fi themes of the movie were pretty fresh in 1995 but have been done several times since then by many movies, so it might not be that groundbreaking on that side. The visuals and photography are goood, showing some flat colours at time, reminiscent of some of the OAV's shots.
Not a perfect transposition of the GITS world, i would have liked a more political plot ala Stand Alone Complex, but not a waste of money either. Also good use of 3D.

EvenReally good adaptation of the source material, staying very close regarding plot and visiuals. For everyone who has seen the anime I highly recommend this, but even for "regular viewers" this should be great if you are a bit into sci-fi. Even if the story was steamlined a bit, for a hollywood production it's still way more complex and interesting than what I am used to. Only real downside is that a handful of scenes could have used a few more takes or a little less CGI filters, but really nothing dramatic that would ruin the movie.
Overall I'm on the fence between 8 and 9, but for the trolling, "whitewashed" and other 0 votes (that this movie definitly doesn't deserve) I'm going for the higher one.

PS + Mini-Spoiler: It's a fully artifical body, who cares about what ethnic it looks like. The brain is from a japanese girl, as explicitly told by the story, so that discussion is just stupid.

Good evening,

I am a avid fan of Ghost in the Shell and while it doesn't have the Psychological feel of the different versions as of yet, it was an excellent adaptation to get people into something they may not have been aware of. If you're an action fan or a Sci-fi fan, this movie is for you. I honestly have seen this 4 times already...twice in IMAX 3D.

No matter what you think of the white washing issue which I and 95% of Japan didn't think was an issue, please find time and see this visually stunning piece of cinematic history. I am hoping for a sequel to allow them to have a more substantial introspect of the human soul...and the potential of how the future may change our thinking of it.

Please check out this amazing movie.

I watched the original anime shortly after its western release in the 90s. After that I was hooked on anime and watch all GITS movies and spinoffs. Even tried the manga series too. To this day GITS is still my favourite anime movie. I even flew out to watch the live action version on IMAX (as there are none in the country that I live in.) With all that said what did I think? It was good. Not great, but good.

I could go in depth and write pages and pages completely dissecting every scene. But that's for another time and place. So I'll keep this as brief as I can.

Visually it is gorgeous. So much detail. It looks and feels like the GITS universe. Sound and music were a dream, I might even dare to say better than the original.

Story wise it does follow the anime very closely, however it does take some liberties and does something all it's own. To those segements I understand why they were done that way and agree that they do fit the movie. I did like how the story focuses on the Major and developes her character, giving her more depth than she had in the anime (though her character was flushed out in the SAC series.) Bato is more or less on par with his character in the anime. Where the movie does waver is with some of the side characters. If you are fan of the series then you'll know who they are and be a little annoyed that if they had so little dialogue, why didn't they make them look and act more like their anime counterparts. The new designs really add nothing, and due to their lack of introduction are redundant to anyone not familiar with. True these characters weren't that developed in the anime either (SAC did that part too) but if they need to be there with little to no dialogue, they should at least look the part.

If anything, I always thought that the Major's character was the only one that it did not matter if the actress was Japanese or not. Afterall, she does have a full body prosthetic so it is an easy thing to explain. I do think Johansen was a good choice, but she is a bit too high profile and her performance was far too similar to her role as Black Widow.

Another bother about the movie is that they really toned down the violence and blood. I'm guessing so they could get a better rating. The hyper violence and use of blood added to the atmosphere of the anime, making it feel more real and serious. In the movie this is lacking and made to look more action packed. This essentially is what makes the film feel a bit hollow. It lacks the intensity that fueled some of the scenes from the anime.

Overall: The live action GITS is the best western adaptation of an anime for the big screen to date. It looks the part, sounds the part, but doesn't completely feel the part. I feel that they tried really hard and stayed as close to the source material as they could, but I also feel like they watered it down too much so that it could get a lower age rating and appeal to a broader audience. In short: It was a good effort, but look at Deadpool and learn from that. Don't be afraid of the R rating if it delivers a better movie.

The visuals are absolutely stunning, with intricately realised interiors and some shot-for-shot recreations from the original that are sublime in fully encapsulating the original aesthetic. With masterful action sequences, and a storyline which remains close to the original, my initial misgivings were short lived. The pacing drags in the second act, and the script occasionally lacks finesse, but the performances are engaging and Johansson is excellent. I was really surprised at how much I liked that movie (I am a fan for years and own all the anime, still have to get the manga).
I loved how this movie was essentially an adaptation of the first anime, going as far as recreating whole scenes with the amazingly cast ScarJo, who did a perfect job on this! What surprised me most, wa how they took elements from all of the anime and mixed them in order to create one richer picture, than the originals themselves. We got the fake memories and parts of Majors past from Arise, the villain from 2nd Gig and the overall plot from the first one. They did tone down the technoblabble and the high-sci-fi concepts, as well as all the infighting between the government agencies, which confused the hell out of me sometimes, so by making it easier to understand, they managed not to dumb it down!
To me, this movie was not an adaptation of Ghost in the Shell... it IS Ghost in the Shell.

I've seen it twice so far and I've teared up at the creation scene at each viewing. It is beautiful, deep enough, atmospheric enough and a fine introduction to the world of Ghost In The Shell for new fans, as well as a being rewarding enough to long-term fans, with the hope of much more to come.
It's clearly not as deep and involved as prior material but if it were, would it honestly have any chance of getting the interest of the wider public whose currency gets film 2, 3, 4 etc. funded? Core fans, deep concepts and theory of life stuff are what you plan for AFTER film 1 is under your belt. Dissing this film and ignoring the incredible achievements this film HAS made is unfair, unjustified and closed-minded.
This film opens the big-budget door to Ghost In The Shell and as such, is well worth seeing.

Visuals:Ghost in the Shell is an adaption of the 1989 Anime that is focussing on the moralic side of merging humans with high end technology. After seeing the movie yesterday in 3D im still ab bit confused of how to rate this movie exactly. Visuals:

So what comes in mind first is the visuals and artdesign that is used in this movie, that is in some parts excellent and in other parts very below average. It is necessary, that this oppinion is based only on the 3D version of the movie, as I think the 2D trailers are having way more aesthetics then the 3D version I was watching last night. When the visuals are great, they show us a nice steampunk world with cool action, as per the first action scene in the restaurant when major crashes a hack and slowmotion, mixed with a nice choreography come into play in the scenes. When the visuals are bad, we see flights through the futuristic Section 9 where the texture details are very low and show their CGI extremely obviously. About the interpretation of the look of the city one can argue. I found it in most time a bit distracting and too colorful. Story:

When it comes to the story, I was not too much in all the previous Ghost in the Shell movies, so I had the opportunity to watch the movie without too many expactations. But when it came to the plot, I was also a bit of mixed feelings, as the movie does not so well in creating "wow" moments, when it starts enfolding the plot.
It was to predictable even if you have never seen any Ghost in the Shell movie before. As my girlfriend was telling me the end after 1/3rd of the movie already. Also it is pretty hard to find out the attachments between the characters themselves because mostly they are just there and do what they do. Backstories are a bit neglected in here.

Actors:

This is were surprisingly the movie had its most points gained in my oppinion. Major, played by Scralett Johansson, was pretty close to the animes original. And Batou, played by Pilou Asbaek, was extremely well taken over visually. Before the movie was released I ready and heared a lot of concerns to take western actors to display the characters, but when you look the original Anime, you will see (as in most animes) the characters in there are also not asians. So this was fitting very well in my oppinion. I also think the acting itself was in most parts fine. One thing that distracted me however all the time, was the way Scarlett Johannson moved. It looked in most parts like she was trying to act how a robot would be walking. I think one can interpret it like that, but for me it was very distracting, as in the original movie I felt major was walking and moving just like a normal human. Verdict:

So when I just rate the fun I had with the movie I would give it a low 7 out of 10. I think also the visuals and the story, as well as the acting, was on the same level. It was okay to look and I was never bored. I would prefer to watch it in 2D again, with higher resolutions to maybe rethink my visual ratings.

Given the low critic reviews I didn't have much expectation for this, but actually it's a solid sci-fi movie and a great adaptation of the original Manga. Blade Runner comparisons are inevitable and visually it's extremely impressive.

There are some very brief moments where the CGI is a little flawed, but the film respects the audience, has a good story and Scarlett Johansson puts in a great performance.

I don't agree with the overly-harsh reviews; although no masterpiece, it's still a decent film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. ive never seen the original animation movie so i have no bias whatsoever and i am not an anime afficionado.. but this much i can say.. i truly enjoyed this movie.. i love the cast, i like the visuals, the metropolis is a futuristic possiblity that i thought was done very nicely, the fight scenes wer very nicely handled very artsy.. cinematography is top notch. This is a hybrid movie that blends art, science and philosophy in a pleasing package... the acting was great... there is nothing here to hate. it is a GOOD movie period. you will remember it a long time after seeing it. not run of the mill at all. i say go watch it without a critical appraisal and just go with it with an open eye.. it is very nicely handled and i thought Scarlett Johansen was passable as an asian girl if not for the blue eyes.. it is not a masterpiece but it is very creative. well worth your time and very enjoyable to watch. The Ghost in the Shell honors its source material and finds ways to insert new ideas, but can't quite capture the awe inspiring beauty and terrific, three-dimensional characters of the original anime classic.

I actually own them all as well except for Arise which is free on Netflix. The 2017 live action film faithfully portrays the original 95 film story line with plot twists thrown in so I wouldn't get bored. If you consider that the film has been more accepted in Asia then here, it is apparent that the whitewashing argument is more politically motivated than genuine concern for Asian actresses livelihood and questions of ethnic portrayal. Enough said on that.

On it's own, the live action film is an interesting story even if it does not possess a very deep plot. Honestly, it would not be interesting to uninitiated audiences to expound on these plot intricacies anyway. I often found myself playing back the dialogs in both voice and translated subtitles just to understand what was going on in the movies and TV series. The visuals and translation of concepts to live action is without question, stunning. Just to piss off Ridley Scott fans I am going to go ahead and say it approaches Blade Runner levels of brilliance in visuals. Certainly, 30 years of technology and advancements give any Sci-fi film the edge these days. Yes, Prometheus looks amazing but aside from the Engineer cave scene there is just not that much going on there technologically speaking. I digress. I enjoyed the film and it touched on the deeper plot themes to give hints to the initiated what was going on. Sanders copies the original 1995 anime, but hey, Abrams did the same with the first and third Star Treks. I think the GITS film is great and hope its' box office failure doesn't prevent the studio from using this film as a take off point in exploring other stories in the GITS world that include other characters like Borma, Saito (who cameoed), Paz, not to mention the Tachikomas. Disappointing really if it ends there but I've heard there is a new GITS anime already in the works in Japan!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yes I gave in a 10. It should get an 8 but due to the people who down-vote this movie I had to do it!
The reason is simple. I saw the original animation when I was a young boy and loved it. To see this story re-envisioned in reality really overwhelmed me. So please go and see this movie. All the critics are sour and wrong!! But please please make up your own mind and see the movie!

The incarnation of GITS is truly in the spirit of the original anime and series, even if the story has been 'streamlined' a bit. Many of the great stories and myths of humanity have commonly used elements...that doesn't detract from their power.

I actually went into the film a bit skeptical, based on much of what I'd read. And yet...as I sat there waiting to be disappointed, the film grabbed me and didn't let go. I was lost in this world, and emotionally invested. Without revealing too much, many scenes (particularly the ending) perfectly capture the trademark intense bursts of action that are so appealing and characteristic of the original animations. These are incredibly satisfying scenes to watch.

P.S. - I'm a long-time reader of Metacritic, and created an account for the first time specifically to write this review...to counteract some of the negative reviews here.

I would almost say: don't do it. It is what I would say when planning a remake of Old Boy or a squel to Trainspotting, Blade Runner or any iconic movie. Don't do it. But I have to admit that I am curious about the sequel to Blade Runner nevertheless. Maybe it isn't going to be as bad as I fear?

So what about a remake of Ghost in the Shell?
Well, I have yet to see the original, so I can not compare it to that one, and that is fine. This movie, with Scarlet Johannson in the role of Major Mika Killian, a cybernetic lifeform with only her brain being human, is on the face of it an action movie with some depth. Personally I think the the second half of the movie shows some more depth, with the Major being more on the path of self discovery, than the first half. Some scenes I did find touching. Personally I liked Pilou Asbaek as Bayou.

There is certainly some room for criticism, specifically in the way that they hammer in what they mean with the word ghost. Yes.. yes.. we know, you don't have to repeat it over and over throughout the film. Also, while I don't think that Johannson is miscast, I do think that she is also not well cast either. She gives a good performance, as might be expected, but every time she walks out into the rain I expected the black from her hair to wash out to show she is really a blond. No, it isn't that what bothers me specifically, just that she felt out of place at times. It would have been better if they had chosen someone like Maggie Q or Kim So-yeon. Not because she has to be an asian, but because if a big part of your movie is asian and plays in a seemingly asian town, then why make the lead not asian. Seems to make more sense?

Also the first half of the story the good guys are pitted against an adversaries who is one step ahead of them, but in the second half this suddenly changes. Maybe the most criticism can be levelled at the pace of the movie. It takes little time to reflect on things and have some silent moments(there is however a great one)something that the anime Ghost in the Shell 2 has(it is the one that I did see).

Conclusion
A fair action movie with nice visuals and superficial depth, but a bit hampered by not daring to delve more deeper and not attempting to stand out. As such it is more a mainstream action movie than anything else and thus eventually it will probably be remembered as that other Ghost in the Shell movie.

Ghost in the Shell makes me understand how he must have felt.. this film is a work of art and has meaning. Both because of the creativity of Shirow Masamune and the talent of Rupert Sanders. I have never felt myself more out of touch with the critics.. the criticisms aimed at this film seem to ignore that fact that you cannot have everything in a film.. you have to choose what to keep, what to discard, in order to focus on the elements of the story which have the most meaning and are the most entertaining.. On this point Rupert made the right call and went beyond the source material to create something new WTF JUST WATCH IT!

They clearly put some thought into the film and took care to honour the original material while also changing the plot enough so it isn't just a retelling of the original movie. The Major's character is well fleshed out as is the cyborg antagonist. The same can't be said for the supporting characters who are all pretty one dimensional, I feel more time was needed to flesh out their personalities. Aramaki especially was bordering on being interesting with some great scenes, he should have been utilised more. Besides one typical blockbuster defying logic in a scene near the end the action overall was extremely well shot and visually interesting. I also believe the white washing controversy actually effected the critical ratings GITS received which isn't very fair. Expand

I will addressI don't know what reviewers smoked but I think Ghost in the Shell is probably best Sci-Fi movie of this century closely followed by Mad Max. I read some reviews and I am flabbergasted by level of dishonesty some people express. I will address those bellow:

1) Some anime fans view the movie as sacrilege of their beloved relic or whatever. I don't care.

2) It explores the same theme and brings nothing original. Yeah, because a millionth romantic comedy brings so much of original stuff. 3) It has to few african americans in the cast. Ok, I don't feel a need to address this one.

Ghost in the shell is visually stunning movie. That alone should make it a must see (I saw it in IMAX). The story itself was to me very interesting and it is the best depiction of cyberpunk world I have ever seen. The pacing of the story may seem to be slow, however I really like it as it fits very well with the overall artistic approach. Very well done.

Based on the low review scores, and lack of buzz I went into this movie not expecting much, and the nearly empty theatre we arrived to didn't offer any additional encouragement.

What I got was potentially the most visually stunning movie I've ever seen, evocative of Blade Runner, but with effects that every advantage of the 35 years of filmmaking technology since its release. The 3D was utterly stunning.

What it had in style, it may have fallen short of in substance. The trailers gave away the main plot point, which would have been predictable anyway. In some ways it fell short of the original anime. And of course there are the understandable criticisms about the casting decisions that seem to be hurting it more than anything else.

Which is a shame, because taken at face value, Ghost in the Shell's visual appeal – the eery ambience of a futuristic city cluttered with vaporeal holograms in which it takes place, the uncanny valley of fusion between man and machine it explores, and the mastery of 3D space it exudes (so convincing I found myself both dodging projectiles and craning to get a better view) – make up for all its shortcomings in spades.

It mixes alot up of the original movie with some of the series' other seasons and puts its own spin on things. That's not necessarily a bad thing as it ends up pulling it's own weight and standing as more than just an adaptation. The film still stars the original Characters but with a twist. It uses different names for a few of the characters including the major but there is a point to it as everything gets explained as the film progresses. The visuals are by far the best thing about the film. The special effects are gorgeous, camera shots are well positioned, and damn this cyberpunk city is beautifully recreated with holograms and technological advancements. It's pure eye candy and it will be the best thing to see for fans of the series. The acting is pretty good and the characters are portrayed well so no complaints there. The action sequences are also a highlight and have style similar to that of John wick (my fav action movie of all time) so that's a definite plus for me. The story is unique as it takes some sense from the original movie and mixes them with all new material an writing. It's a unique way of making it feel familiar but at the same time more than just a readaptation. Overall I would say if you liked ghost in the shell you will like this. Most people hate on it because of "whitewashing" characters but if they wouldve seen the movie they would see this is not the case. If you're a fan more than likely you will enjoy this one and I do recommend it. I wasn't a huge fan but this movie pulled me into its world and characters and I hope to see more in the future. Like I said earlier this isn't the ghost in the shell you think you know or seen. It's familiar while different and makes for one hell of a good anime adaptation and well worth your time. 8/10 Expand

I've been a huge fan of the Ghost in the Shell series from the beginning, and the 2017 movie is by far my favorite iteration of it. (Be warned, I also rather enjoyed Ghost in the Shell: Arise as well, but I can tell you why.)

Ghost in the Shell from the beginning has always been about tackling a few ideas that are consistently played with over the different iterations.

Things like: What it really means to be human, the concept of primacy of consciousness, individual autonomy as a self-evident virtue, how do you deal with an ever increasing access to information as well as human ability, how do you try to seek out morals and justice in a corrupt or imperfect society, how do you deal with loss of identity in the face of technological integration with humans, how do you identify the real threats to forward human progress, or the real culprits of legitimate human suffering and deal with the problem, etc.

Over all of this, has always been the trouble of presenting these concepts to the Japanese public at large. There is a lot of battle and war to overcome in the very deeply ingrained nationalistic nihilism that is practiced by Japan's wider culture.

Because of this, many of the earlier and more 'classic' GitS pieces have dealt heavily in themes of nationalism, nihilism, working from within the governmental system always as much as possible, etc.

A lot of the smaller storyline pieces deal with the geopolitical and socioeconomic consequences of Japan's culture continuing to influence the country 50 years from now, while singling out varying levels of political corruption and trying to define a real yardstick for measuring when it dips over into true, naked evil. Consequently, the more overarching themes are woven into the Major's personal character arcs to deliver the deeper philosophical messages.

This is important background information because as you begin to examine GitS: Arise, you can see more and more of those original 'audience concerns' being pulled back and stripped away as the audience is far more familiar with the characters and who they are as people, far beyond that of just literary constructs.

There was a lot of collaboration with the creative lead from the original movies involved with this film, and it really shows. Creating a movie that is being marketed to an American audience allows them to sell the ideas of individualism, responsibility of action, etc, far more easily and purely than the original content was able to. And they absolutely took the opportunity to do so.

The story involved doesn't really present us with the 'Major Kusanagi that's been doing wetwork for years' which we've seen the most of previously. This piece is about creating that character, the setting, and most of Section 9 during a short amount of time.

Then they had to make sure they were doing it in a believable fashion to a wide variety of new minds, so that they can push even deeper into some more of the traditional sociopolitical complexity that GitS is often very heavily associated with using later content.

I can say this. Every character that we were given reason to care about was excellently played and sold, and had a story to tell far beyond just the lines of dialogue they were delivering. The casting and acting were singularly top notch, through and through. I have never liked a version of Batou better than this one.

Even though at times it felt like I was being bombarded by special effects, every single effect that I examined was well thought out and chosen. From the base platform and modifications of the Major's sidearm, to the way the road driving HUDs and road markers developed from existing technology and usage, and on, and on, and on.

From one of the most fluid tactical assaults by a 'Hollywood SF unit' I've ever seen portrayed, to the amount that Chief Aramaki represented a cultural link with Japan which the movie utterly needed to truly anchor it, there was somebody with a serious thinking cap on involved with every single detail of this film.

Scarlett Johansson. Oh, my love. She is every bit the Kusanagi that any actress could have managed in the role, and far more than most would have.

That being said I think in this movie Batou has the superior character. Scarlett Johansson stunningly nails a performance that will never win her an Oscar, even if it should.

If you can't tell, I highly recommend the film. Please go see it. Immediately. It is 100% through and through Ghost in the Shell, in every glory that means.

You'll need to wait for the characters to be established before we can get to the really complex stories, and expect that this story has been tailored to the viewing audience. You may just find however, as I did, that someone out there sold their soul a few years back so that ScarJo could nail a perfect 2017 live-action Ghost in the Shell movie.

Coming from a fan of GitS since the original movie, and having watched the 3 films and 3 series.

This movie was awesome. I went with a homie with whom we used to watch the series together in our pre-college years. He loved it, I loved it.

Here goes:
1: Many references to the whole of GitS. If you know your stuff, this movie offers many deep and subtle references to various series of the whole franchise. Not only the blatant scenes from the first movie. I won't go any further because it will contain spoilers but. *Note the crane episode from GitS Sac2*

Story: it's an overlay of the original movie, delving into a story arc that was not presented in detail in either of the GitS franchise. SO it's not meant to be a repetition of the original, rather exploring more deeply into the past of Majour.
And in itself a very original and well deserved GitS artwork.

It is not dumbed down like most say, it is a clever reassembling and introduction of the series and I can see that the Director knew his stuff pretty darn well.

Thing is: the Director IS NOT trying to resauce and remake a masterpiece of the first movie. Instead he's taking from all of that and telling people: look if you want to know more of Gits, watch the rest of the stuff. Here I'm trying to tell a standalone story that delves deeper into the origin story and psychology of a young Majour. And it is well done.

Pls consider this: The movie 1 and 2 are in chronology. the series Sac1 and Sac2 have their own stories and chronology that are different and cannot be situated in the same timeline as the movies. Solid State Society can be argued to take place after SaC2.
Arise is another spinoff in another parallel universe from the other two sources.

In this logic, this movie is in itself a parallel universe and standalone on its own. but its story is very well that of the psychology and character development consistent with the others.
Remarkable, clever, well acted. (Scarlett acting a emotionally awkward robot human cyborg is quite legit) And for all those who are whining about why Scarlett, the movie kinda justifies it itself. So here goes.

ScarJo does a fine job portraying the Major, even if she does take some getting used to. There are definitely a few parts that felt rushed, a few moments that make you question the decisions of the director, but overall it is a good movie with an interesting if not completely original plot. If nothing else it is a great set up for a sequel which I very much hope gets made. I'm sure a second one would be better and more loyal to the original stories now that Major's "origin" story is taken care of. Expand

Like Constantine, this film has characters with the same names, but who act and look completely differently and a completely different plot yet still manages to be a good film. If you stripped all the "Ghost In The Shell" bits out of this film it would be much better. The film runs to about 1h 45 minutes and there are never any dull parts or filler. The plot is more like Robocop or the Raiden parts of Metal Gear than the original. I started off sceptical as I loved the original, but by the end I was won over by the interesting world and new back story. If you can put aside your love of the original and see this as a completely different thing, you'll probably enjoy this. Expand

-I like all the characters
-The plot is simple and effective
-Really gorgeous sci-fi 'future porn' setting

I have no complaints. If the anime sequels are good, I hope they continue this live action version.

Despite going in with cautious expectations, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this was a decent movie.

It always had some huge boots to fill - and while it's nowhere near as deep or philosophical - the setting is great, presented with some fantastic visuals backed by a superb soundtrack. It also has a decently passable story based in the GitS universe - an original story, I might add, though with some elements and scenes obviously lifted directly from the original material. It's obviously been adapted more for the mainstream audience, but it's certainly not bad.

Complaints? The lack of depth compared to its source material does it The characters could have definitely been fleshed out more, with the Major being a little too stoic compared to the anime, and the other members of Section 9 not getting anywhere near enough lines. It also doesn't nearly fill the previously mentioned big boots, but when judged on its own merits, is still a solid film.

If you are a fan on the anime series, you likely love the characters and tone. This film is faithful visually and tonally to the anime series, which pays homage to the 1995 animated film here and there. It is not a retelling of the 1995 film, or any one anime episode plot. This stands faithfully shoulder to shoulder with the anime properties, but is westernized and simplified in its approach to philosophy. Great score, great casting (even the Major), faithful tone and character relationships, and one of the best live action adaptations of any animated property. On it's own merits, it will pale in comparison to the 1995 animated film, which is smarter and methodical in its exploration of the existential questions it asks. This is a sci-fi-fi action film that plays it safe, but establishes characters we love with origin stories we hadn't seen before. Most of the flak this release is getting is by people who want it to have the philosophical sophistication and weight of the 1995 film (or upset ScarJo is white). The anime series didn't tackle such heady themes, and likewise this release doesn't either. It's an origin story that predates the events of the anime, and doesn't have any complimentary qualities to the 1995 original film. You won't be disappointed if you appreciate the anime series. This is faithfully executed, so long as you base your comparisons on the series and not the 1995 original. Expand

The new elements in the movie are good, and learning more about a backstory for major is an interesting pull for any Gits fan, but it doesn't entirely make up for the recreated scenes that just feel neutered by comparison...and make up more than half the film.

Pros:

- Story is emotional and creates more sympathy to the Major character - Eventhough its not as deep as the 1995 movie, it still gives you something to think about after
- Its not the usual Hollywood's cosplay version of an animation franchise
- You can feel that the whole team put lots of love into making this movie

Cons:
- A bit disappointment on how they do the garbage truck driver scene
- Quirks here and there but I can see that they need to spoon-fed the audience a bit since its targeted for Hollywood's market
- Not enough screen time for the whole member of section 9
- The usual Hollywood's super villain and hero cliché is still there

My score: 8 Hideo of 10.

P.S. Takeshi Kitano will not play a role in a bad movie!
