Any insta-doc could have found folks who profited from the short squeeze, and shown the material goods or comfortable lifestyle their profiteering bought. Rise of the Players instead puts viewers in the investors’ seat at the poker table, making real their tension, self-doubt, and anxiety over holding onto a stock the experienced players say is worthless.

This documentary has its limitations, both as a piece of reporting and as cinema. Tulis and his editors rarely give the viewer a moment to breathe and reflect, as they race through a blitz of images from internet chats and cable shows. Their approach to the documentary form is merely functional at best, and sometimes is visually unappealing.

I heard a lot of news about the Gamestop stock surge in 2021.I learned what happened. This documentary shows how small retail investors beat big companies. You will learn a lot of things about Wall Street.

The documentary is interesting, however it is more concerned with explaining the moral high ground the investors took rather than explaining the system, how it works, and how it led to this point.
