I've watched the entire Friday the 13th series in the past few months, so they are all fresh in my mind, and this 2009 remake is absolute garbage with no redeeming qualities and just stupid and brutal. There is also a huge plot failure where a woman escapes from Jason's underground hive, runs through the woods to escape, and then 30 minutes later is back in chains--with no explanation or scene explaining how she was re-captured. Edited out? What an epic fail.

I'm really not surprised at how bad this movie is because Michael Bay was involved in it. He should really just be banned from Hollywood. Next time I see his name come up front and center at the beginning, I'll just quit and save myself an hour. I did not finish this movie, just couldn't take it after an hour.

Yes, we know, death and sex go hand-in-hand. Put people in situations where they're having lots of sex and then murder them gets the adrenalin pumping. But seriously, this is 2015, not 1985. Aren't we beyond that primal crap by now? When it's this obvious it doesn't work. Sure, the girls are fun to look at, but I was at least expecting a bare minimum plot here IN ADDITION.

They're dumb fun, and that's why I enjoy them. You don't come to these movies for the horror(what little there really is), or for the shallow and disposable characters. You come to them for Jason and to watch him kill people in creative and crazy ways. This movie delivers on that front, even if it is a little derivative and trite. The kills aren't going to match the creativity of some of the later Friday the 13th films, but that's only because it's more grounded like the original four and it (mostly)works. The Jason in this film is like a menacing predator stalking in the bushes rather than the hulking unstoppable force of death Kane Hodder was during his time as the character, and it's a shame that it never got a sequel, because the idea of Jason as a "hunter" is far more appealing. Overall, this movie serves as a solid reboot the franchise, and it certainly will hold up better than the original ever did. Expand

This "remake" its not a remake. Its just an ordinary jason film but its lacking character and scariness but besides that its a decent movie. I dont really recommend it.

I loved the f13 franchise and was a big fan of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake which Marcus Nispel was also responsible for. So I thought to myself it was a sure bet especially with the mindset of how hard is it to execute one of these movies. Well apparently quite difficult because this disappointing dumb fest highlights all the things that brought the slasher to a close in the late 80s, Early 90s. And ontop of that he uses the same execution that he did in Chainsaw. It's very serious, drab cinematography and bleached film. All if those suited that film perfectly but here they feel very much out of place. F13 has always been fun and this revamp is anything but. In fact it's quite miserable, drawn out and lifeless. Derek Mears is fine as Hason but the film is nonsensical and 95% of the characters are really unlikable. The hot but bland Jared Padalecki and mousey Danielle Panabaker aside. Watching it now I hate it a little less but it's just not fun in any way, the kills are uninspired and the finale like the rest of the film is just plain stupid. *SPOILER* I mean after everything they go through with the cops on the way they push his body into the lake just for one last cheap jump scare, which sadly sums up the whole experience.

ButI have no clue how Michael Bay and his production company "Platinum Dunes" came to a decision to remake a lame slasher movie into the same lame slasher movie. I mean, they had to have something in mind that would improve the original. But there isn't anything. It has better make-up, but for a 2009 movie that's not really a compliment. The only thing a enjoyed was the last act and the tunnels that Jason uses to move around the camp. Also, what annoyed me the most was the overuse of sex. I have no problem with sex, as long as it develops the characters. This movie uses sex just to drag the narrative and has no value. Expand

The number is gigantic, considering that the franchise never had a single spark of quality. This time, the franchise tried to return to its origins, to the old abandoned camp on the shores of Crystal Lake, probably in an attempt to remake the first film. Despite being considerably better than the first film and any other film in the franchise, it's still not really a good movie. It creates good environment and suspense but, in fact, we already know everything that will happen, the material is totally worn. The bet on adolescent nudity, deplorable attempts to make sex scenes and drunkenness, make the film immediately obnoxious and prevents any sympathy for those creatures called "teenagers". Was it good to see them dying? It was... but it's not worth watching the movie to see it. Expand

Immediately we see that the new Jason is deadlier, faster and more powerful when hunting down his prey. The new Jason is probably one of my favourite Jason's from the franchise, I love his agility and Machete kills and some of the other creative kills such as the axe throw or the Bear trap. People will say that "It's nothing like the originals, what is this crap?", but what people you gotta understand that slashers were a lot different back in the 80's than it was in 2009. Friday the 13th did a good job for the 21st Century standard and did a cool spin on "What if Friday the 13th was set in modern times/How would the movie look with the new and improved cinematography 20 years later. The originals will still be classics in cinema history but in my opinion, this movie should be separated away from the 80's and 90's Friday the 13th anthology and stay in its category of its own or go in the category of "reboots of classic horrors". It would be cool to get another Friday the 13th film, 10 years later, same with what they did with Halloween.

Overall, the reboot is a great movie. The classic Friday the 13th movies are classics and are great in their own way just as this movie is great in its own way. I wouldn't personally compare the two as they come from 2 different decades and in my opinion, rocked both decades when it came to slasher movies.

I really don't understand the hate people inflict upon this movie. Obviously, it's not a great movie. But is a lot better than every single movie that came after the original, with an exception of Freddy vs. Jason. .
.
Good : We get some interesting characters and an okay mystery-ish film. There is suspense and you can get invested in the story. Unlike the Nightmare remake, this is somewhat a different movie. The first one wasn't perfect, so this made it a little different and kind of its own movie. The entire beginning of Crystal Lake killings is not altered at all. But the story it tells is sort of a little different than that of the earlier ones. Characters are interesting. Perhaps the most interesting characters in the entire franchise. And some actors do a good job. Jason, in this movie, doesn't kill a particular character. The reason is shown to us, and we some may think it is way nonsensical - remember - it was recycled from part 2. And many of you defend part 2. And, it played out in a bit more realistic way in this movie. .
.
Bad : There are some pseudo pornography scenes here and there. One thing for sure. If you want porn in your horror film, Friday the 13th films will never disappoint. We get some weird character interactions. And there are some annoying clichés. Why does a black guy or an Asian guy have to die first? And Jason killed one of the people who interacted with our lead, but not the other. Why? Either he kills only in his territory, or he kills everyone who comes in his way - that's what I understood from these movies. But, it's totally random if he kills whoever he wants and spares in the same way. I hate the ending which was an attempt of getting more sequels which we never did. .
.
Conclusion : There are things to like about it, and things to hate about it. I don't want to spoil anything regarding the "mystery" or "reveal" elements. As strange as it may sound, it's a movie in the franchise I would recommend, if I have to. .

But there was one or the other death made cool, even if I had to laugh at the death of the lady on the jetty (you just had to show your breasts again).

It was just so typically clichéd, going out alone, scattering when you run away, etc.

Definitely more Slasher-Suspense then Horror but it’s still watchable. Caught me off guard that Jason was able to run in this film but nonetheless some kills were pretty nice and the soundtrack was nostalgic. 2009 horror humor at its core.

Friday the 13th (2009) is a bad movie. the plot of the movie is good at first but is poorly executed with forgettable characters there is too much of a focus around Jason Voorhees not really his victims.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m sitting here, typing this review up, and it finally hits me. This movie reminds me more of a Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie than a Friday the 13th movie. It feels like that franchise anyways. Yes, we get the iconic hockey mask and the story about Mrs. Vorhees. But the grittiness, the kidnapping, and there’s something there that reminds me of Texas Chainsaw.

PLOT

A group of college friends decide to spend the weekend in a house near Crystal Lake. Also, a young man is looking for his sister who, along with her friends, disappeared near there, a month earlier.

MY THOUGHTS

Oh boy! With this rewatch I do think I like it more. But I also realized some issues I hadn’t noticed before. It’s still one of the better made remakes unlike some of the other remakes. I’m looking at you A Nightmare on Elm Street. You were total garbage.

For the positives, I like how the kills are brutal. The whole film is darker, grittier, and the kills are great. I feel it’s even scarier than the more recent sequels have been. Yes, we have a few of the typical characters that are annoying but we do have characters we like and feel bad for if they die. I liked Wade and Richie. Their banter was fun. And Chewie. Poor Chewie. He had a brutal death. I liked Chewie and Lawrence joking around as well. Then, you have the nudity. It wouldn’t be a Jason movie without some nudity. Right? We get plenty of that with the three girls. Though, I read that Michael Bay walked out of opening night of the movie because of all the nudity. Like really? I don’t think it was too much. LOL

And now to the problems I had with the movie. And this first one is something that I know I’m not the only one who has a problem with. Jason doesn’t kidnap people! WTF? He kills. That’s his MO. This kidnapping her cause she looks like someone in a picture in a locket? I call **** on this. I really hated this change in it. It’s like Rob Zombie’s Halloween. Why change a characteristic of the character that they’ve had the whole series? (With Zombie’s Halloween, he changed Michael’s backstory, in that he came from an abusive, white trash family. It takes away the terror of someone who came from a good loving home just being evil.) This has always left a bad taste in my mouth with this film.

My other issue is the bait and switch with the final girl. You think Jenna (Danielle Panabaker) is the final girl with Clay (Jared Padalecki), and then bam! She gets killed so that Whitney (Amanda Righetti) is the final girl. Yet she hasn’t been in most of the movie! We see her in the first 20 minutes and then for most of the movie she is absent, and then gets to swoop in at the end to snag the final girl. Nope. You need to earn that title and I don’t feel like she earns it. Nothing against the actress, but her character doesn’t deserve it. Just my opinion.

So, I’m watching the movie and there’s this nagging feeling that this movie has a feel of another franchise. I couldn’t figure it out. While writing this I realized it felt like a recent Texas Chainsaw movie. To my surprise I found out that the director, Marcus Nispel, also directed the 2003 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. So that’s why they seem similar.

Overall not bad for a Friday the 13th movie. It has it’s issues but it doesn’t detract too much from the movie. I would definitely recommend watching.

According to co-writer Damian Shannon, the character of Jason Voorhees was re-envisioned as more territorial, like a hunter, someone who doesn’t kill people at random but will defend his territory from anyone invading it, and this in the most horrible manner.
If you pay attention closely you can see a wheelchair and a sweater in the tunnels. The wheelchair is a call back to Mark who was a paraplegic Friday the 13th Part 2. The sweater is a throwback to Mrs. Voorhees in the original Friday the 13th.
This film is the first Friday The 13th film to use CGI weapons, like the machete, as some scenes were too risky to film.
Let’s get into the rankings:

Kills/Blood/Gore: 4/5
Sex/Nudity: 3/5
Scare factor: 4/5
Enjoyment factor: 4/5

My Rank: 3.75/5
IMDB: 5.5/10
Rotten Tomatoes: critics: 2.6/10 audience: 4.6/10
Letterboxd: 2.5/5

This has the Cabin Fever (2002) effect with unlikable characters that you really want to die and maybe the odd one that you relate to. This works well for Friday the 13th as Jason is the antihero that you root for to kill the repugnant teens. There were a few moments that were jarring, like when Jason was just standing on the roof, this section didn’t really make sense. This film doesn't change the formula of the original, it doesn't try to do anything different, and this is why I like it! The series lost its way and became a joke, the original 4 films were the best and this fits in well with the original 4. On a technical front this is perfect looking and sounding. Violence is brutal but not gory enough for me. Jason is badass and back (if only for one short movie). Expand

I didn't mind this too much. Yes, 90% of the characters are as annoying as can be but that is the classic. The final act was so dark it was a real chore to see anything at all, especially with the shaky cam film style.

Expand
