This was the first R rated movie I've seen, and I must say it was great. I enjoyed the original, and this was a great reimagining of it. There's plenty of breasts, gore and intense moments sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.

I watched all 11 Jason movies and this REBOOT, not remake. If this was a remake, then Jason wouldn't be in this one. Anyways, what I hear most is "The guy doesn't even look like Jason Voorhees." Let's describe him shall we, this was before he was a zombie so we're looking at Part 2-4. He has a disfigured head, wears a sack on his head till he gets a hockey mask, and he carries a machete. In the remake, he looks just like that. "The other characters are stupid and are meant to die." Guys, did you even watch the other movies...in fact, have you seen any slasher movies? Every character in the Friday the 13th movies are all disposable for Jason to kill, except the main character. This takes place in Crystal Lake, just like the original movies. Jason takes his time killing people, just like the original movies. Most importantly, Jason didn't die. Do I have to mention about the original movies again? What is it about this movie that pissed people off and say its the worst remake. It didn't copy and paste anything and it wasn't anything different from the original movies. What I saw was a Friday the 13th movie. Expand

However it does take the typical friday the 13th formula and makes a very good typical friday the 13th movie, but with a few new bells and whistles. Jason can run in this one, which I thought was cool, makes him more aggressive looking. He sets traps and moves around with underground tunnels, these new things were cool. However if you were expecting a really groundbreaking remake, youll be disapointed. The scares aren't really scary, but atleast its violent enough and dirty enough to satisfy a horror fan. The story they came up here wasn't bad at all, and I even cared about a few characters. The movie is entertaining to watch as long as you don't set the bar very high on expectation. Friday the 13 (2009): 8 out of 10: Jason is a bit off in this one. Outside of the main characterFriday the 13 (2009): 8 out of 10: Jason is a bit off in this one. He moves to fast, he kidnaps people like he watched Rest Stop one too many times and he seems to lack a certain hulking presence of the original. Outside of the main character however, this is a pretty good Friday the 13th film.

Friday the 13th is billed as a relaunch (remake reboot etc) and as such it seems to confuse. It contains plot elements of the first four films (Mrs. Voorhees decapitation takes place in flashback) and Jason rightfully starts with his original sack and finds his hockey mask (as he did in part 3). In addition, while I am critical of Jason having his own “lair” I am reminded he had one in Part 2 (Where he kept his mothers severed head lovingly surrounded by candles). The main plot of a man trying to find his missing sister is straight from part 4. Where the film succeeds is canon fodder and nudity. There are plenty of both and most of it is of high quality. The kills range from mundane (of these there are plenty) surprisingly intense (A burning sleeping bag may cause nightmares and the topless wakeboarding will cause nothing but smiles.) The sheer number and variety of kills however is quite impressive.

Camp Crystal Lake has apparently turned into a breast implant recovery retreat. While there is only one camp counselor to be found (in grainy flashback no less) there are plenty of woman with breast implants and an aversion to wearing shirts. Julianna Guill (who in fairness may be au-natural) in particular gets points for simply being one of the most attractive women I have seen on-screen in many a movie. (Willa Ford of the topless wakeboarding scene is not half bad either.)

Considering the number of times the Friday the 13th films have gone of the rails in the past, one should not raise the bar all that high. In addition, while I am an unabashed fanboy of the series, I do recognize it does have serious limitations. (What we now refer to as its charms.) This is a flashier, more competently lensed Friday the 13th, and all in all is that such a bad thing?

There are plenty of bad jokes, drugs, nudity and violence. If that is not what you were looking for you may want to check the title screen again. As Friday the 13th movies go this is one of the best.

Immediately we see that the new Jason is deadlier, faster and more powerful when hunting down his prey. The new Jason is probably one of my favourite Jason's from the franchise, I love his agility and Machete kills and some of the other creative kills such as the axe throw or the Bear trap. People will say that "It's nothing like the originals, what is this crap?", but what people you gotta understand that slashers were a lot different back in the 80's than it was in 2009. Friday the 13th did a good job for the 21st Century standard and did a cool spin on "What if Friday the 13th was set in modern times/How would the movie look with the new and improved cinematography 20 years later. The originals will still be classics in cinema history but in my opinion, this movie should be separated away from the 80's and 90's Friday the 13th anthology and stay in its category of its own or go in the category of "reboots of classic horrors". It would be cool to get another Friday the 13th film, 10 years later, same with what they did with Halloween.

Overall, the reboot is a great movie. The classic Friday the 13th movies are classics and are great in their own way just as this movie is great in its own way. I wouldn't personally compare the two as they come from 2 different decades and in my opinion, rocked both decades when it came to slasher movies.

Friday the 13th is the next of many slasher films being re-introduced to audiences in the form of a re-make. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween have been done, now its Friday the 13th (and I've heard Nightmare on Elm Street is next). The re-make of Friday the 13th is a bit different in the sense that it skips over most of the events of the first film in the original series. Jason's mother was still a killer at Crystal Lake, she was still beheaded by a camp counselor...but those events are told more as an opener for Jason and his rise (and motivation) to becoming a killer himself and punishing rowdy teenagers. The story is a bit predictable, mainly from the teenagers/partiers side...someone turns up missing, family member comes to look for them...that person meets other potential "victims", and thats that...its forgettable, designed entirely to give Jason fresh meat for the grinder...but thats okay, no-one goes to see a Jason film for intricacy in plot/story..but for good ole fashion slasher fun, of which there is plenty. The gore quotient is rather high...the kills range "aw cool" to "oh man thats nasty" to tongue in cheek and almost goofy, but thats always been the charm of these films, the ludicrous nature of Jason's killing methods. All in all, I enjoyed this film...it's gritty and oft times dark and moody but at the same time still containing that sense of campiness and cheesiness thats made this series famous and infamous at the same time. It's not great and in some cases not even good, but films like this are hard to pass up...because they are indeed good fun if your looking for something you can enjoy without thinking too much about. I'd recommend this as a RENTAL. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m sitting here, typing this review up, and it finally hits me. This movie reminds me more of a Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie than a Friday the 13th movie. It feels like that franchise anyways. Yes, we get the iconic hockey mask and the story about Mrs. Vorhees. But the grittiness, the kidnapping, and there’s something there that reminds me of Texas Chainsaw.

PLOT

A group of college friends decide to spend the weekend in a house near Crystal Lake. Also, a young man is looking for his sister who, along with her friends, disappeared near there, a month earlier.

MY THOUGHTS

Oh boy! With this rewatch I do think I like it more. But I also realized some issues I hadn’t noticed before. It’s still one of the better made remakes unlike some of the other remakes. I’m looking at you A Nightmare on Elm Street. You were total garbage.

For the positives, I like how the kills are brutal. The whole film is darker, grittier, and the kills are great. I feel it’s even scarier than the more recent sequels have been. Yes, we have a few of the typical characters that are annoying but we do have characters we like and feel bad for if they die. I liked Wade and Richie. Their banter was fun. And Chewie. Poor Chewie. He had a brutal death. I liked Chewie and Lawrence joking around as well. Then, you have the nudity. It wouldn’t be a Jason movie without some nudity. Right? We get plenty of that with the three girls. Though, I read that Michael Bay walked out of opening night of the movie because of all the nudity. Like really? I don’t think it was too much. LOL

And now to the problems I had with the movie. And this first one is something that I know I’m not the only one who has a problem with. Jason doesn’t kidnap people! WTF? He kills. That’s his MO. This kidnapping her cause she looks like someone in a picture in a locket? I call **** on this. I really hated this change in it. It’s like Rob Zombie’s Halloween. Why change a characteristic of the character that they’ve had the whole series? (With Zombie’s Halloween, he changed Michael’s backstory, in that he came from an abusive, white trash family. It takes away the terror of someone who came from a good loving home just being evil.) This has always left a bad taste in my mouth with this film.

My other issue is the bait and switch with the final girl. You think Jenna (Danielle Panabaker) is the final girl with Clay (Jared Padalecki), and then bam! She gets killed so that Whitney (Amanda Righetti) is the final girl. Yet she hasn’t been in most of the movie! We see her in the first 20 minutes and then for most of the movie she is absent, and then gets to swoop in at the end to snag the final girl. Nope. You need to earn that title and I don’t feel like she earns it. Nothing against the actress, but her character doesn’t deserve it. Just my opinion.

So, I’m watching the movie and there’s this nagging feeling that this movie has a feel of another franchise. I couldn’t figure it out. While writing this I realized it felt like a recent Texas Chainsaw movie. To my surprise I found out that the director, Marcus Nispel, also directed the 2003 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. So that’s why they seem similar.

Overall not bad for a Friday the 13th movie. It has it’s issues but it doesn’t detract too much from the movie. I would definitely recommend watching.

According to co-writer Damian Shannon, the character of Jason Voorhees was re-envisioned as more territorial, like a hunter, someone who doesn’t kill people at random but will defend his territory from anyone invading it, and this in the most horrible manner.
If you pay attention closely you can see a wheelchair and a sweater in the tunnels. The wheelchair is a call back to Mark who was a paraplegic Friday the 13th Part 2. The sweater is a throwback to Mrs. Voorhees in the original Friday the 13th.
This film is the first Friday The 13th film to use CGI weapons, like the machete, as some scenes were too risky to film.
Let’s get into the rankings:

Kills/Blood/Gore: 4/5
Sex/Nudity: 3/5
Scare factor: 4/5
Enjoyment factor: 4/5

My Rank: 3.75/5
IMDB: 5.5/10
Rotten Tomatoes: critics: 2.6/10 audience: 4.6/10
Letterboxd: 2.5/5

Но это было на завтрак, как понял героиня похоже на ее мать в молодости видимо. Оценил несколько не совсем толерантных шуток, я даже не знаю но вроде по контексту похоже, они реально себе это позволили в 2009? Смело. And even though it wasn't scary like I expected (and was kind of hoping) I still got some enjoyment out of it thanks to some pretty gruesome kills and some hot topless chicks. But I still can't help but feel disappointed with the movie. The acting is good and most of the main characters likable, but surprisingly the worst part of the movie and what brings it down the most is actually Jason himself. All they have him do is just walk up behind the victims get their attention and kill them in some bloody way. It's far from tense or scary and that's what's so disappointing with this movie. But if you like to see a bunch of 20-somethings get hacked up by a (kinda bland) psychopath then this may be for you, just don't expect some super scary horror movie. Expand

Lack-lustre 'remake' that has some great moments, but ultimately falls short. Could have been a lot better, but pales in comparison to the classic original. Populated with obnoxious characters that I didn't care lived or died. Lousy plot as well.

I liked the way this flick looked, at times, and I like how this Jason looked. There this thing with how well an actor played the characters: Jason, and while this guy is okay as the part of Jason, he's not as good as the last guy from Freddy vs Jason. That all aside, I don't really recommend this flick to anyone unless they are a big fan of the series. Expand

They're dumb fun, and that's why I enjoy them. You don't come to these movies for the horror(what little there really is), or for the shallow and disposable characters. You come to them for Jason and to watch him kill people in creative and crazy ways. This movie delivers on that front, even if it is a little derivative and trite. The kills aren't going to match the creativity of some of the later Friday the 13th films, but that's only because it's more grounded like the original four and it (mostly)works. The Jason in this film is like a menacing predator stalking in the bushes rather than the hulking unstoppable force of death Kane Hodder was during his time as the character, and it's a shame that it never got a sequel, because the idea of Jason as a "hunter" is far more appealing. Overall, this movie serves as a solid reboot the franchise, and it certainly will hold up better than the original ever did. Expand

I really don't understand the hate people inflict upon this movie. Obviously, it's not a great movie. But is a lot better than every single movie that came after the original, with an exception of Freddy vs. Jason. .
.
Good : We get some interesting characters and an okay mystery-ish film. There is suspense and you can get invested in the story. Unlike the Nightmare remake, this is somewhat a different movie. The first one wasn't perfect, so this made it a little different and kind of its own movie. The entire beginning of Crystal Lake killings is not altered at all. But the story it tells is sort of a little different than that of the earlier ones. Characters are interesting. Perhaps the most interesting characters in the entire franchise. And some actors do a good job. Jason, in this movie, doesn't kill a particular character. The reason is shown to us, and we some may think it is way nonsensical - remember - it was recycled from part 2. And many of you defend part 2. And, it played out in a bit more realistic way in this movie. .
.
Bad : There are some pseudo pornography scenes here and there. One thing for sure. If you want porn in your horror film, Friday the 13th films will never disappoint. We get some weird character interactions. And there are some annoying clichés. Why does a black guy or an Asian guy have to die first? And Jason killed one of the people who interacted with our lead, but not the other. Why? Either he kills only in his territory, or he kills everyone who comes in his way - that's what I understood from these movies. But, it's totally random if he kills whoever he wants and spares in the same way. I hate the ending which was an attempt of getting more sequels which we never did. .
.
Conclusion : There are things to like about it, and things to hate about it. I don't want to spoil anything regarding the "mystery" or "reveal" elements. As strange as it may sound, it's a movie in the franchise I would recommend, if I have to. .

This has the Cabin Fever (2002) effect with unlikable characters that you really want to die and maybe the odd one that you relate to. This works well for Friday the 13th as Jason is the antihero that you root for to kill the repugnant teens. There were a few moments that were jarring, like when Jason was just standing on the roof, this section didn’t really make sense. This film doesn't change the formula of the original, it doesn't try to do anything different, and this is why I like it! The series lost its way and became a joke, the original 4 films were the best and this fits in well with the original 4. On a technical front this is perfect looking and sounding. Violence is brutal but not gory enough for me. Jason is badass and back (if only for one short movie). Expand

"Friday the 13th" is short on surprises, but that's a divergence from the norm, right? Jason may be an unrepentant, cold-blooded killer, but at least he doesn't play games with his victims. Compared to the killer from the "Saw" movies, that practically makes him Mother Theresa. You can't call this mama's boy compassionate, but at least he never gives his teen prey any hope. With machete in hand, the killing is over and done with in a jiffy, then he sets his sights on the next nubile(or dude) without ceremony. If there's such a thing as good slasher etiquette, Jason could start his own finishing school for homicidal maniacs. Structured like a trilogy-in-one(the film has two prologues, or rather, two short films), the final girl in the second part survives his bloodlust rampaging. If the filmmaker had the artistic latitude to try something really different, he could have used Jean Cocteau's "Beauty and the Beast" as a template for this hypothetical relationship between Jason and the girl. An affinity for Whitney(Amanda Righetti) is suggested, but never fully realized, largely because the main demographic for "Friday the 13th" are fanboys, who would probably balk at their anti-hero displaying an unprecedented sensitive side. Since Whitney is alive, she must be receiving sustenance from her goalie-masked captor; the filmmaker, however, decided to keep all of the girl's meals and met hydration needs off-screen. To do otherwise, would force the filmmaker's hand into showing that Jason has some deep-seated humanity left, somewhere in his black heart, contrary to the mythology of this inexplicably popular franchise. Everything that I have seen before I found here. The same poor acting that I saw on other horror films I found here too. The same "scary" moments. The same archetype murderer. Nothing new. Nothing original.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off, I love horror movies! I grew up watching old classics movies from the 70s-90s like Halloween, Child's Play, Friday the 13th, It, A Nightmare on Elm Street, etc. So when "Friday the 13th" remake came out, I think most people like me were excited, yet very skeptical. Basically, I pitied it with a score of 4, because it was nice to see Jason in action again, though, movie did turn out to be horrid. The kills were all so predictable, and not very creative. There was no character to really cheer on to survive or that you'd absolutely love. The acting was just somewhat off. There really wasn't much of a campy feel to it either. Plus, since it is a remake, this movie didn't really emphasize on Jason Voorhees and his mother's story. Like how it all began, or the new kids being skeptical staying in the cabin because of the stories being told about Crystal Lake and such. That used to be done in every Friday the 13th movie (and that scenes of when the characters would feel like they're being watched), and there's no reason why it shouldn't have been done it this one (especially for a new audience). They could have at least brought back an original actress/actor to appear in this remake. A big disappointment was the fact that Jason held that girl captive. He CHAINED HER UP instead of killing her. Okay yeah, she supposedly looked like his mother, but even the Jason in the original saw past that REAL quick. Also, this movie was not dark, scary, campy, nor suspenseful. And, the acting was a bit lacking. Honestly, it didn't even make me jump like the originals still do (no matter how many times I watch it lol). I agree with users JeffL about the absence of the memorable "ch-ch-ch" sound effects and MikeP about the movie being "uninspired and pointless". It is a damn shame that Directors and Writers are just making so many remakes and just ruining what we grew up with and that we have so many expectations of. And, the remake of Halloween was just the absolute worst! I could rant all day about that one lol. Expand

Friday the 13th prequel is just not up to scratch. No scare just lots of *** and rude scenes. The only reason i did not give it 0 is that the story was average. The rest was just bland scenes and sets.

I didn't mind this too much. Yes, 90% of the characters are as annoying as can be but that is the classic. The final act was so dark it was a real chore to see anything at all, especially with the shaky cam film style.

But, alas, this film wants to please the crowd by bringing the legendary slasher villain to the 21st century, and this it certainly did, although they forgot to bring anything fresh to the table.

The film is popular enough to become a franchise and spawn several sequels of varying quality and generally inferior to the one that started it all off.

It is very easy to call the 2009 'Friday the 13th' as a remake, for reasons that are easy to understand. Personally am actually to judge 'Friday the 13th' (2009) as a reboot rather than a remake. While not quite as bad as has been said, it even fails by reboot standards. There was no point to it whatsoever, the series should just have stopped at the last sequel and even then the series was severely fatigued, the fifth or sixth for me was the last watchable 'Friday the 13th' film, and there is very little to recommend it judging it as an overall film.

Entries like 'Jason Takes Manhattan' and 'Jason X' may have been heavily problematic and less than mediocre, but credit is due to them for trying to do something different. 'Friday the 13th' (2009) has very few ideas of its own and the very few attempted were either cheaply executed (such as an out of character Jason), felt like they were lifted from another film (too many of the deaths are sadistic enough to be near-'Saw' territory) and more horror genre clichés done to death.

The story is suggestive of the series being completely stale and takes forever to get going after the first 20 minutes, with very little happening and with a lot of gratuitous, cheap and pointless elements. Apart from one respectable performance, the acting is horrendous even by 'Friday the 13th' standards, the characters are ones you want dead fast and have nothing interesting about them and the dialogue would likely make even more forgiving people embarrassed. The ending is far too abrupt and anti-climactic, as well as going too far with the ridiculousness.

Very few of the deaths are that memorable or disturbing, they're just too sadistic and paced too fast to make much impact. There is a severe shortage of suspense and scares, next to zero in both departments past the opening, replaced instead by childish humour and an overdose of gore, nudity and profanity that adds nothing. Pacing is erratic and the direction is often lifeless, especially in most of the first half. Can remember very little distinguished or memorable about the music, mostly one of the series' best assets now completely forgettable here.

Despite these many drawbacks, there are positives. The first 20 minutes were absolutely great, it was tense, scary, clever, suspenseful and compelling. It actually gave the feeling that the series had redeemed itself.

Technically, apart from some slapdash MTV-like editing that just didn't belong the production values were stylish and atmospheric.

Although no Kane Hodder, Derek Mears is a wholly respectable and imposingly unsettling Jason.

Overall, started off so well and then went downhill like water down the plughole. 3/10 Bethany Cox

I loved the f13 franchise and was a big fan of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake which Marcus Nispel was also responsible for. So I thought to myself it was a sure bet especially with the mindset of how hard is it to execute one of these movies. Well apparently quite difficult because this disappointing dumb fest highlights all the things that brought the slasher to a close in the late 80s, Early 90s. And ontop of that he uses the same execution that he did in Chainsaw. It's very serious, drab cinematography and bleached film. All if those suited that film perfectly but here they feel very much out of place. F13 has always been fun and this revamp is anything but. In fact it's quite miserable, drawn out and lifeless. Derek Mears is fine as Hason but the film is nonsensical and 95% of the characters are really unlikable. The hot but bland Jared Padalecki and mousey Danielle Panabaker aside. Watching it now I hate it a little less but it's just not fun in any way, the kills are uninspired and the finale like the rest of the film is just plain stupid. *SPOILER* I mean after everything they go through with the cops on the way they push his body into the lake just for one last cheap jump scare, which sadly sums up the whole experience.

The number is gigantic, considering that the franchise never had a single spark of quality. This time, the franchise tried to return to its origins, to the old abandoned camp on the shores of Crystal Lake, probably in an attempt to remake the first film. Despite being considerably better than the first film and any other film in the franchise, it's still not really a good movie. It creates good environment and suspense but, in fact, we already know everything that will happen, the material is totally worn. The bet on adolescent nudity, deplorable attempts to make sex scenes and drunkenness, make the film immediately obnoxious and prevents any sympathy for those creatures called "teenagers". Was it good to see them dying? It was... but it's not worth watching the movie to see it. Expand

Friday the 13th (2009) is a bad movie. the plot of the movie is good at first but is poorly executed with forgettable characters there is too much of a focus around Jason Voorhees not really his victims.
