It's not a perfect movie and has some flaws but it might just be the most heartfelt and irreplaceable movie of all time. Tom Hanks has one of the best performances ever captured and the supporting cast is equally as good. The movie has incredible drama, comedy, romance but then transports you to one of the better war sequences and battles you've seen captured during Vietnam. There's no shortage of incredible vignettes of American history that imbeds you with American nostalgia. Also some of the cinematography and shots make you fall in love with the look of America all over again. Even though some of the source material is very heavy, you get to laugh a lot, and you will feel inspired at the end and hope you can see the world just a little bit how Forrest does.

It follows the story of a mentally challenged boy who through his blind optimimism and impulsive nature goes on to lead an impressive life. The movie grasps at profound ideas and mostly executes them . It does present 2D perspectives on it's peripheral characters such as jenny or bubba never really making them people rather that objects Forest has regards for. It's obvious why this is a classic as it's depiction of American nostalgia is hypnotic and directed with care. I do not think it's a masterpiece but it is admittedly a movie of note. Expand

Forrest Gump, I think is a beautiful film. Never too schmaltzy, but there are some genuine tearjerkers like Forrest at Jenny's grave. The cinematography is stunning, the costumes are lovely and the scenery is gorgeous. The music is also very calm and relaxing, perhaps adding to the tone of this film. The screenplay is well crafted, and the story is simple. But what made this movie was its simplicity; it never tries to be too complex and is consequently moving. The acting is just as impressive; whilst Tom Hanks's accent is a little awkward in places, my only real criticism of this movie, he gives a truly remarkable performance, though I do think Morgan Freeman deserved the Oscar more for Shawshank. Robin Wright gives possibly the best performance of her career, and Sally Field is very dignified as Forrest's mother. The scene stealer though is Gary Sinise as Lieutenant Dan, a very moving and insightful performance. Overall, an extremely good movie, I will admit I wasn't sure whether I would like it, but the simple answer is this, I do. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Very dramatic story, I cried when Gump was talking to Jenny's grave, about their son.. The comedy present is a sort of a slapstick, sentimental style of comedy - its hard to explain but I hope that makes sense(?).

It is quite saccharine sweet in tone for most of the film, with a very light, jaunty piano tune played in the background while Hanks narrates Forrests memories and thoughts about his past, particularly his childhood, from quite early on. This is regarded as a classic film and as such was a film I'd wanted to see for some time. I felt it had a fairy tale quality to itself and certainly the theme of childhood innocence seemed very present for quite a while. There is something quite endearing about Gump's staunch belief in what his mother (his 'momma') told him, some of which could be hard for us to believe. He has an optimism which is admirable but there is an inevitable feeling of sadness to it as well, for the viewer, as we realise how vulnerable he is and fear what may become of him, in the various situations he finds himself in. I found the film quite engrossing - its definitely a classic case of it being an underdogs tale, although thats not to say that everything goes anywhere near smoothly for him, far from it (I won't elaborate anymore, for obvious (spoiler prevention) reasons).

Cast wise, Tom Hanks plays the main role, that of Forrest Gump. He does very well at portrating a person who is clearly mentally challenged (whatever the politically correct term is nowadays, I'm not very keen on the one that starts 'ret...'), thus somewhat baffled by fairly everyday things, situations and the like. As a character, he comes across as quite thoughtful and philosophical and I felt quite sorry for him, given the forms of abuse he had to put up with from others who belittled his issues. Hanks does well at making him seem very much someone you could admire in ways, a sort of perhaps unexpected underdog hero. He does well at portraying a look of bewilderment at times, which I felt to be quite endearing. Other cast members include Sally Field, who plays Forrest's mother, Robin Wright who plays Jenny Curran (Forrest's childhood crush), Mykelti Williamson, who plays Bubba Blue, a fellow US army recruit, Afemo Omilami who plays the rather scary drill sergeant and Gary Sinise, who plays Lieutenant Dan Taylor, among others.

The music featured in the background is pretty standard, cheesy stuff for the most part, certainly the music played in the background at times. I did feel it was better than some films in terms of keeping the background music fairly quiet, thus it not being too 'in your face' as is the case in some films. There are some rock and soul based songs (including Jimi Hendrix) played at times but overall, I didn't think music played an especially big part in the film overall.

Content wise, the film contains partial nudity and sex references, with scenes in which sex is implied but not specifically shown as such. There are scenes involving drug use, with drug taking paraphernalia. There is also some mild to moderate violence present, with war situations depicted and abuse being inferred. There are some instances of bad language, including a couple of racist terms, although nothing extremely graphic. The film is quite emotional in tone in general, with some scenes being potentially more upsetting than others. Its been given a 12 rating in the UK, to reflect this content.

I'd say this is a film which implies certain societal morals and as such it may seem a little high and mighty/forced perhaps to some cynical types - I'm not overly keen on such films in general but I did feel I appreciated this particular film. Some scenes were quite gripping, although I found myself wondering how likely it could honestly be for someone like Forrest, to have dealt with what he does. I don't feel like this is a film in which I could really criticise it for seeming far too unrealistic, as I felt myself going along with the plot regardless.

I wasn't entirely impressed with the special effects in one or two war based scenes, with explosions looking, shall we say, a little less than entirely realistic, in my eyes anyway. However, I only remember that being an issue in one or two scenes and it hardly ruined the film for me. I'd happily recommend this film.

The film, based on the novel by Winston Groom, tells the story of a mannamed Forrest Gump. Forrest who since childhood was considered a stupid child with an IQ of 75 has a unique life story.Having been belittled by everyone, Forrest continued to go forward with a stupid label by others against him.Forrest Gump is an epic film that makes the audience realize that behind the shortcomings there are many advantages in each person. The nature of the main character Forrest Gump can certainly be a good example for everyone. So what kind of traits can we imitate from Forrest Gump's character?
1. Loving Parents
We can see how much Forrest Gump loves his mother. In the film he is willing to swim from the ocean& run through the city when he hears the news that his mother, Mrs.Gump is sick.Forrest Gump certainly realized that his mother's struggle couldn't b reciprocated with anything. The mother who always supports Forrest in the midst of his shortcomings makes Forrest realize that his mom is his hero
2. Always positive and optimistic
Although Forrest Gump is known as an idiot character in the film but his stupidity isn't a problem for a Forrest. He keeps going&always thinks positive. In d film, Forrest always shows his positive nature in any situation&in any crisis. Can u copy this 3. Never give up& b generous
After he managed 2 create a shrimp company with the initials of his friend Bubba Gump Shrimp Corporation. He and Lieutenant Dan, a character frustrated by his disability during the Vietnam war, started a shrimp fishing business. After repeatedly failing to catch shrimp at the beginning of his search for shrimp.Forrest Gump didn't give up.He tried many times&failed many times.Until one day his shrimp catch was successful& together with Lieutenant Dan he managed 2 create the most successful shrimp fishing company in his city.Forrest Gump, who seemed 2 b a very successful businessman, didn't feel happy.Until finally he handed over his company to Lieutenant Dan & gave his income 2 the Bubba family, his best friend who had motivated him to start the shrimp fishing company
4. Good promise holder
Bubba is a black man whom Forrest met when he joined the military. Bubba, who when he was with Forrest, always talked about the world of shrimp, of course, for many people who listened to him talk about shrimp, it was quite boring. But not with Forrest, he always listened to Bubba talk about shrimp&Bubba's dream that when he finished his military duty he'd set up a shrimp company with Forrest but unlucky, Bubba died on the battlefield.Until it was left Forrest with his promise with Bubba to set up a shrimp fishing company.Instead of burying the promise. Forrest kept his promise to his best friend Bubba by successfully founding a very successful company, the Bubba Gump Shrimp Corporation.Forrest's promise and dream with Bubba finally came true.
5. NEVER forget friends in any situation
The next Forrest Gump trait that u can emulate is that he always helps anyone.u can see it in the film even in critical times when Forrest and his troops are attacked by the enemy. Had separated well with his best friend Bubba and Lieutenant Dan. Forrest did not want to stay silent, he finally returned to the battlefield and saved his friends who were still alive even though they were full of wounds. No exception for Lieutenant Dan who he saved even though he had to lose his leg in the end. Lieutenant Dan, who was frustrated with his disability, was angry with Forrest. But again Forrest didn't want 2 forget the Lieutenant Dan.He accidentally meets Lieutenant Dan who turns into a beggar in a wheelchair.
6. Faithful in love affairs
The romance drama between Forrest and Jenny can be a good example for everyone. The single love story between Forrest Gump and Jenny seems to break the audience's heart when they see how loyal Forrest Gump is 2Jenny.Although he had been separated several times for a long time&many times Forrest Gump was rejected by Jenny and many times he saw Jenny's bad side. Forrest remained standing faithfully waiting for Jenny. He still loves Jenny with all her flaws.Until finally he&Jenny got married But the marriage did not last long because Jenny had to leave the world early due to a virus due to her wild life.Forrest Gump must have been very sad, Jenny's long-awaited love finally ended briefly. For Forrest Gump, Jenny was his first and last love
7. Good father
At the end of the story, Forrest Gump who has become a father, gives his best love to his son.He applies the love he gets from his mother who is also a single parent.Without Jenny's presence, Forrest Gump performed his role appropriately to be a good father to his son.

Followed by an introduction to the main character who tells us her whole life. It was quite a ride. Unbelievable. Quite enjoyable at first. I'd say almost sweet and motivating at the same time. But gradually it got darker and darker, which I liked and it got my attention. It also started playing some music here and there, which was cool. The story of Forrest Gump is cool, but it's not somehow masterful. Still, I have to stand by the fact that this movie has a special charm. It's sweet and dark at the same time. It combines these things into one and in my opinion it works first class. Despite all the sad events, which I won't spoil, the film shows us that you just move on in life and that the next days can be better. That's probably not the main idea of the film, but it just had that effect on me. If I were in the shoes of the main character and experiencing what Forrest Gump does here in the plot, I probably would have had a mental breakdown a long time ago, but Forrest kept going and I liked that. For me, an amazing film and a classic that I think is in the MUST-SEE films. Recommended. Expand

TheForrest Gump is such a beautiful film that teaches you so much about life. Forrest as a character, through the writing and Tom Hanks exceptional performance is an awkward yet endearing person that everyone should strive to be more like. The movie skips through various chapters in his life as he lives through the 60s and 70s, grows up through school, makes a friend, goes to college, fights in the Vietnam War, and so on. Through these different chapters in his life we get to see how Forrest views the world differently than most people. He is a very kind and optimistic person and often by helping and being kind to others he is able to inspire them to change. It is a movie honestly everyone should see, no matter your age, it is never too early or too late to watch this film. Expand

True love never dies.

This film brings us the story of Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks), a southern young man with a little mental retardation that, despite don't allow him to be the top in his class, cannot deprive him of the innate goodness that brings in his heart. Owner of a large sympathy and gentleness, maintains an imperishable love for Jenny (Robin Wright), a childhood friend who will lead a very different life from his. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, features Eric Roth's script based on a novel by Winston Groom.

This is perhaps one of the most moving films of the nineties, and a turning point in Tom Hanks' career, which entered its maturity phase, already visible in the film who filmed before this one ("Philadelfia"). And it's very difficult not to feel an immediate empathy for his character, which constantly shows great kindness and sympathy towards all. Forrest, always running, will watch and even take part in many important moments in the recent history of America without, however, set aside his goodness. It's like he passed through life but remained so pure that worldly vices couldn't affect him. Jenny, his love, will follow a different path that will determine the fate of the link between both.

A love can last forever, even without seeing the beloved? Can a person live a love that is pure and without malice? This film is especially dedicated to those who still believe in that.

The movie focuses on one man's journey throughout many of the most iconic moments in American history. Forrest (Tom Hanks) sits on a bench with a box of chocolates on his lap, waiting for somebody, as he waits, some strangers, waiting for other people or transport, sit alongside him. He proceeds to tell them stories, whether they wish to hear it or not, about how he managed to get to where he currently is in life. We see a young Forrest living quietly with his mother (Sally Field), as she tries her best to raise him, since his father is nowhere around. He does his best at school, despite some of the other kids often making fun of how simply "stupid" he is. He wears leg braces as he wasn't fully able to properly function his legs. Growing up, Forrest befriends a girl named Jenny (Robin Wright), who has been kind to him, despite his lack of knowledge. There seems to be some kind of spark between the two of them, but they often go their separate ways after school. We see that Forrest joins the army and meets a man named Lieutenant Dan (Gary Sinise) who often struggles to keep his patience with Forrest. Forrest ends up becoming an iconic ping pong player, often playing really fast, and he meets President Kennedy, John Lennon etc. all with the power of special effects to make it look as if Hanks' character actually met these people. 'Forrest Gump', directed by Robert Zemeckis (who also directed 'Back to the Future'), is a powerful movie, and tells a story of a kind man and how he remained humble throughout, what looked like, a difficult journey. The acting is solid, the story is engaging, and it is a movie with a warm heart. Maybe too warm for some, but all in all, this is a story that needs to be shared to everyone. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ah, a look back over 30 years of American history through the eyes of a somewhat retarded individual is so overtly romanticised and with so much 'apple pie' about it, that I've never understood why it's regarded as some kind of masterpiece.

The entire movie is just one unbelievable set-piece followed by another, as we watch young Forrest grow into adulthood, attend college, fight in Vietnam, become a world class ping-pong player, create THE dominant shrimp catching business in the US, become an international news story (in of himself) as he spends 3 years running back and forth across America, before he finally gets to marry the love of his life.... Before she dies of AIDS and dumps her kid (Forrest's son, who she kept away from him right up until she knew she was dying) in his lap and just expects him to carry on his life.

Therein lies the film's biggest problems.... For all that is good, in how it uses Forrest's life experiences to form a narrative that includes a large number of important cultural moments in American history through the early 1950's to the early 1980's, there is a something fundamentally bad.
In order for the film to work you have to believe that Forrest can merrily walk through life, getting involved in all the major incidents around him, and not query how on Earth it would ever happen.
I just couldn't do that, so watched the film more as a parody, than a drama.

The other fundamental problem with the film and, as an audience, one we just have to accept.... Is that Forrest is in love with a woman who is incredibly self-centred and borderline sociopathic. All the way through the film she just treats Forrest like crap, and although she eventually gets her own comeuppance (dying of AIDS in her late 30's) it doesn't make up for everything she did to Forrest.... Plus, as mentioned, her dying act is to foist a small child on him, a child that will remind him every day about the woman he lost (well, never really had.... But whom he loved!!)

The only good part of the film is the soundtrack... It is crammed with excellent songs from the 50's through to the early 80's, the 'Vietnam' era part having (obviously) the best.

I suspect my aversion to the movie could well be because I'm English, so I'm a spectator watching the game, rather than someone living in America who might latch onto the sentimentality a little more easily!

Ultimately this is a film which has good intentions, but is so utterly unbelievable that I couldn't get involved on any level.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My momma always said life is like a box of chocolates.

Forrest Gump is a movie I remember my parents watching when I was a kid, and them telling me that I should watch it someday. When I was a kid, I remember not caring about the movie, thinking it was boring because there was no superheroes in it. Yesterday night was my first authentic viewing experience of this movie for me.

After watching this movie, I was blown away completely with this film. Everything about it is truly phenomenal, especially Tom Hanks’ performance as the titular Forrest Gump. The director (Robert Zemeckis) attempts to make you care about Forrest throughout the movie, and I cared a ton. There wasn’t a single scene in which I didn’t care about Forrest because his character actually felt like a person, and not an actor.

Something this movie does so brilliantly is making you feel like you are a part of Forrest Gump’s life and world. Whenever Forrest is explaining how much he misses his crush Jenny, you feel sorry for him, and when he tells his other stories, you get so invested in them, because they feel like they actually happened.

Jenny plays a big part of the movie, and to Forrest. Forrest has known Jenny ever since he was a little kid, and the more he gets to know her, the more he thinks he truly loves her. Throughout the movie, there are a few scenes in which he explains to Jenny that he loves her, and at one point even asks her to marry him. Mostly every time Forrest expresses his love for Jenny, she rejects him, and you truly do feel sympathy for Forrest.

Speaking of which, this movie is incredibly emotional. I almost cried three times during the duration of this movie, which is something rare for me to do. I almost never cry at movies, but this movie almost got me. Certain things happen like his best friend dying, and other instances that happen in Forrest’s life and they all make you feel sad too, because you do care about Forrest and the people around him.

Forrest Gump is not just an amazing Tom Hanks movie, but it truly is a masterpiece of 1994.

Elegantly made and winningly acted by Tom Hanks in his first outing since his Oscar-winning “Philadelphia” performance, Robert Zemeckis’ technically dazzling new film is also shrewdly packaged to hit baby boomers where they live. Pic offers up a non-stop barrage of emotional and iconographic identification points that will make the postwar generation feel they’re seeing their lives passing by onscreen.

In a part Dustin Hoffman might once have killed for, Hanks plays a kind of semi-imbecile whose very blankness makes him an ideal audience prism through which many of the key events of the ’50s through early ’80s can be viewed. Lacking any ideology or analytical powers, Gump is the immutable innocent moving in a state of grace through a nation in the process of losing its innocence, an Everyman who acts instinctively in an age defined by political divisiveness.

As Gump narrates his story to a succession of listeners at a Savannah, Ga., bus stop, a most curious life is revealed in evocative, often jokey flashbacks. Gump is raised in an old plantation mansion, now a boarding house, by his abandoned mother (Sally Field), who tells the boy that he’s no different from anyone else despite his 75 I.Q. Outfitted with leg braces and shunned by other boys, young Forrest finds his only friend in a beautiful little girl, Jenny, herself the victim of abuse at home.

Once Forrest, in a startling scene, literally breaks free of his leg shackles, he becomes “a running fool,” darting about wherever he goes at terrific speed. Even though he doesn’t understand the rules, he becomes a star running back on the high school and college football teams, and it’s at the U. of Alabama that the grown-up Forrest has his first date with destiny, as a dopey-looking bystander next to Gov. George Wallace as the first black students are admitted through the school’s doors.

After another encounter, with JFK, Forrest heads for Vietnam, where his dim-wittedness makes him the ideal Army soldier. On the way, he meets Bubba Blue (Mykelti Williamson), another not especially swift fellow who’s like Forrest’s black brother, a man whose dreams of a shrimping life give Forrest something to aspire to once they’re back.

After an intense battle, Forrest saves the lives of several men, including his commanding officer, Lt. Dan (Gary Sinise), who nonetheless loses his legs, and Forrest returns home to receive the Medal of Honor from LBJ and have a chance reunion with Jenny (Robin Wright), who’s become a camp follower of SDS and Black Panther types.

Through it all, Forrest retains his love and idealized image of Jenny. She, however, indulges in the try-it-all excesses of the era, becoming a stripper, hippie, activist, druggie and more. Jenny keeps popping into Forrest’s life at intervals, never quite ready to settle for his unquestioning love until it’s almost too late.

Meanwhile, Forrest’s eventful life comes to embrace a stint as a champ ping-pong player, a down-and-out period with Lt. Dan in New York, a hilarious key role in the Watergate saga, amazing success as a shrimp boat captain, the resumption of his life as a runner, which sees him become a sort of mystical guru figure to the jogging set, and finally the unexpected arrival of fatherhood.

In covering so much ground, literally and figuratively, Eric Roth’s intelligently structured, finely tuned screenplay also serves up innumerable cultural touchstones that will have most viewers in the 30-50 age range melting in recognition. Main themes here have to do with the impulse to recapture the past; the wish to return to one’s childhood, or at least the site of it; the desire to fulfill your life with your original true love; the need to refashion the simple feeling of homeafter many aimless years; and assuming the responsibilities of parenthood after much delay.

At just short of 2 1/2 hours, pic is a bit indulgent, long and excessive at times, but this is more than compensated for by its humor and sharp-witted storytelling. Pic is weakest in the Forrest-Jenny relationship; the characters have nothing but their childhood connection going for them.On the other hand, Gump reps another career triumph for Hanks after his Oscar turn. In the key supporting roles, Sinise and Williamson are excellent, while Field pops up as Forrest’s loving mom at the beginning and near the end.

The film has been very well worked out on all levels and Zemeckis’ direction is supple, and in this instance he has well balanced his long-term interest in technical matters with concern over performance and content. From the extraordinary, descending opening shot on through a vivid ground-level Vietnam firestorm and the documentary facsimiles, the film is a superior example of Hollywood craftsmanship.

Although hard to pigeonhole, the picture unavoidably recalls the idiot-savant classic “Being There,” and significantly resembles “The World According to Garp” in tone. Most often mentioned, however, will be its similarity to Woody Allen’s “Zelig,” as some of the biggest laughs stem from wizardly interpolations of the Gump character into newsreel and TV footage of several U.S. presidents and other leading figures.

Just short of 2 1/2 hours, pic is a bit indulgent, long and excessive at times, but this is more than compensated for by its humor and sharp-witted storytelling. For the minority of nay-sayers the film will encounter, pic’s key problem will be its preoccupation with lost innocence and certain other self-centered hang-ups.

It's one of my favorite movies of all time. It's a movie that I can watch multiple times and never get tired of it. It has it's dumb moments but they are so little compared to the rest of the movie.

Tom Hanks gave his all in Forrest Gump and it still works for him and his career. He manages to be the master of acting and not only that, the plot actually works from the book.

Since its theatrical release in the summer of 1994, Forrest Gump has become one of those movies seemingly everyone is familiar with. It's a cultural touchstone with lines like "Life is a box of chocolates" appearing everywhere from tee-shirtsSince its theatrical release in the summer of 1994, Forrest Gump has become one of those movies seemingly everyone is familiar with. It's a cultural touchstone with lines like "Life is a box of chocolates" appearing everywhere from tee-shirts to greeting cards. The film's popularity was italicized by the way it rampaged through the 1995 Oscars, winning six awards (including the "big three" of Best Picture, Director, and Actor). Now, for its 20th anniversary, the decision has been made to do something Hollywood almost never does during the home video era: a big screen re-release.

How to get people into theaters to watch (or re-watch) Forrest run when it's a lot easier to do it at home? Enter the IMAX gimmick. Calling it anything less crass would be dishonest since there's no inherent reason why Forrest Gump should be bulked up for IMAX (or pseudo-IMAX, depending on how one views the smaller AMC version of the product). Still, commercial considerations aside, there's something majestic about watching this tall tale unfold on a larger screen than one can find in the average family room. The IMAX format is a nice way to entice some viewers to see the movie in a theater while maintaining the original composition.

The original review holds up today because, unlike some decades-old motion pictures, this one doesn't seem dated. It wears its age well. Here's what I wrote in 1994 when the movie was first released:

Ever find the grind of life getting you down? Is the day-to-day struggle threatening to drag you under? If so, there is a movie out there that can replenish your energy and refresh your outlook. Passionate and magical, Forrest Gump is a tonic for the weary of spirit. For those who feel that being set adrift in a season of action movies is like wandering into a desert, the oasis lies ahead.

Back when Tom Hanks' movie career was relatively new, the actor made a film called Big, which told the story of a young boy forced to grow up fast as a result of an ill-advised wish made at a carnival. In some ways, Forrest Gump represents a return to the themes of that earlier movie. In this case, the main character remains a child in heart and spirit, even as his body grows to maturity. Hanks is called upon yet again to play the innocent.

Through the miracle of visual effects, Forrest meets his fair share of famous people - George Wallace, Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon, and John Lennon. While mixing the real footage of these notables with new images featuring Hanks is not a seamless process, the result is nevertheless effective. (This is a precursor of what would become commonplace in future films as the effects work employed here became refined.)

Forrest Gump has several messages, few of which require much digging into the subtext to unearth. The most frequently recurring theme is an admonition not to give up on life. Why surrender when you don't know what lies ahead? By contrasting Forrest's life with the lives of those around him, and by showing how the passage of time brings solace to even the most embittered hearts, the movie underlines this point.

Tom Hanks won 1994's Academy Award for Philadelphia, but his performance here is more nuanced. [With Forrest Gump, he would become only the second man to win back-to-back Lead Actor Oscars, joining Spencer Tracy.] The Alabama accent may seem a little awkward at first, but it doesn't take long for the acting to dwarf the twang. Hanks fashions a human character free of guile and deceit, and barely able to comprehend a concept like evil. Robin Wright gives the best performance of her career, surpassing what she accomplished in The Playboys. Looking and seeming like a younger Jessica Lange, she is believable as the object of Forrest's undying affection. The scene-stealer, however, is Gary Sinise. A renowned stage director and actor, Sinise is probably best known to film-goers (to the extent that he is known at all) for his portrayal of George in 1992's Of Mice and Men (which he also directed). In this movie, his portrayal of Lieutenant Dan Taylor is riveting. The passion and pain he brings to the middle portions of Forrest Gump hold together some of the film's weaker moments.

The soundtrack boasts a variety of sounds of the era - perhaps too wide a variety. Often, music can be useful in establishing a mood, but Forrest Gump rockets into the realm of overkill. There are sequences when the choice of song is inspired (the use of "Running on Empty" for Forrest's "long run" comes to mind), but the soundtrack could have used a little pruning. There are times when it seems as much designed to sell CDs as to cement the setting.

Ultimately, however, any such gripes about Forrest Gump are minor. This is a marvelous motion picture -- a mint julep on a hot summer's afternoon.
