After that, things get a bit messy: Who’s in control? What of freedom? Garland addresses quintessentially human issues while economically driving this powerful, visionary film toward a resolution consistent with its chilling, darkly comic tone. Standout performances by Gleeson and, more subtly, Vikander, lit in various degrees of dimness—conveying an impression that there may be more there than meets our eye. Expand

Great script...really makes you think about the workings of our intelligence and our attempts to manipulate. It's hard to figure out who's the honest one and who's the deceptive one. Just like life, but with an A.I. Robot.

Brilliant film that really makes you think as a good sci-fi should. The dialogue was particularly good and Nathan's character was unique and fascinating - one of the few times a genius was portrayed realistically.

I actually ended up rooting for his character as the film went along, contrary to the expectation that he is the antagonist.

All three main characters are so complex that it's impossible to decide who was really right or wrong in their actions - you could make arguments for both sides.

The film also raises questions about fundamental principles like what it would take for something to be human, physical attraction, sexuality, and more.

Frequently with movies I'm too busy picking at plot holes and obvious contrivances to enjoy them. But not this one, because there weren't any that I could see. Everything that happened was driven by the actions the characters took and those actions were made sense with what we saw of their personality and motivations. The most important thing for a movie like this to have is logical, internal consistency, and this one has that. There were a few times while watching it where I thought the writers had made a mistake or opened a plot hole; but each of those times, within a few minutes, the characters on screen addressed my concern in a way that fit within the story and the characters. Not many movies get this right but this one does.

All that said, while the plot didn't play out exactly as I expected going in, it doesn't have any completely out-of-left-field twists either. If you are paying attention, you can mostly guess where it's going.

The movie contains some intense scenes, full frontal female nudity, and frank sexual dialog. None of it is completely gratuitous, it's all in service of setting an atmosphere or adding depth to a character. But still, this isn't a movie to take the kids to. Take the R rating seriously and leave them at home.

4.Nice location.
5. Great philosophical aspect where, Ava questions Nathan about her right "to be free".
Cons:
1.A geek like Nathan made the wonderful robot, but coming to his security structure, it is entirely based on security card !!! which is not secure at all. Also no back up plan was there in case card fails (eg. security question, retina scan nothing) that was a small gap I think.
Overall, wonderful movie.

Beautiful and scary, thought provoking in a way that makes you question your own sense of identity. No fluff, no explosions, just a good story directed perfectly using CG in the best way. So far the negative reviews can be boiled down to (boring because it only has 3 main characters) (boring because there have been other movies with robots) (boring because they didn't understand it) (boring because I knew how it was going to end). I call BS on the last one, there were several ways it could have gone and enough misdirections to keep me guessing. Not sure what people don't understand, it's fairly straight forward but does have some ideas that everyone may not be familiar with. Yes there have been other similar movies (Her and Bladerunner are the ones that come to mind immediately) but they are not the same. That's like saying they should have stopped making westerns after John Wayne because it was already done. And I have no idea why a movie needs a certain number of characters. That's completely foreign to me so I have no idea how to address it. Expand

Perfectly casted, exquisitely acted, and Alex Garland deserved the Oscar far and away before the writer(s) of Spotlight for best original screenplay. I mean, honestly, Spotlight was a great movie, but the story was written for them in the 300+ articles done by the Boston Globe on sexual abuse in the Catholic church. What was so original about the screenplay? Ex Machina took a relatively new idea (Artificial Intelligence) and expanded it into the realm of possibility in today's world. It also posed so many questions about the ethics behind creating AI that it left you thinking about the possible gains and repercussions to actually stepping over that line for weeks after you'd seen the film. Low budget perfection. Expand

Alicia Vikander is incredible as Ava. The entire movie you see from Caleb's perspective. He's played by Domhnall Gleeson. He win's a contest or something and is sent to meet Nathan played by Oscar Isaac who also has a great performance. The location is at this research facility that is extremely isolated in the middle of the wilderness. Nathan has built Ava who is a robot with artificial intelligence. He wants Caleb to test her. So he does and falls head over heels for her. She manipulates him by flirting and using her sexuality to make Caleb think that she likes him. Since you see the movie through Caleb's perspective you feel this also. It made me think for the first time that falling in love or at the very least being sexually interested in a Ai robot is possible. This is kind of mind blowing if you think about it. And the entire reason this works is because of Alicia Vikander. She is so good making me believe in this story being told. Her performance as Ava is spectacular. In my opinion it's the performance of the decade. I would love to see a Ex Machina 2. Expand

Ex Machina is great film that will haunt you long after you leave the theater.

It's a relatively slow burn, and featuring a sparse setting and is structured rather like a stage play; the encounters between characters simply introduced without exposition as 'acts', that afford the viewer time to contemplate what has passed. The Dialogue is excellent, and conversations between characters take two forms. Interrogation, or to propel the story forwards with the introduction of the next layer of philosophy. The forest setting is the perfect tool to isolate the characters, and the tension is expertly raised for the duration of the suspense filled week our characters spend together. Isolated from the world at large outside, and the inner world of the Lab. It recalls the setting of The Shining.

The two antagonists share a consistency of character from beginning to end. We are suspicious of them both. Our Protagonist is subjected to the same experience as the audience, and reaches a satisfying breaking point where he questions his own humanity, then commits to a course of action to set up the finale.

Overall a completely satisfying journey featuring beautiful locations, photography, and music all working together without disruption. Thus I afford this a perfect rating.
I would recommend this film to anyone with an interest in Science Fiction and technology.

The setting, the acting, the special effects and the stylistically and aesthetically brilliant Garland's debut feature, which he both craftily penned and directed, make up one of the best films of the year.
And it seems that we simply can't get enough from Alicia Vikander as of late whose each and every performance seems to be better that the last one. It is no wonder she is nominated for two Golden Globes this year.

CharactersOne of the finest sci-fi films about Artificial Intelligence I've seen in a long time. An intellectual treat that touched upon various intriguing and relevant subjects, from life, death, sex, to the intellect itself, of course. Characters were likable, but also had this eerie aura around them, like you never could fully trust them. And that complimented the atmosphere that felt claustrophobic, isolating and at times terrifying. Talking about spotlight of the film - Ava was a fascinating mind and a character that I couldn't stop dissecting, trying to understand her motivations, feelings and always had the nagging question - "Is she truly conscious?". That is a sign of great writing and directing, hopefully we'll see more film projects from Alex Garland.
However, the movie isn't without its share of flaws. The main protagonist, Caleb, was bit of a let down. It is through him we get the chance to learn certain things about Ava, AI and various philosophies, however his quirky character restricted the plot to go deeper into the philosophies of an A.I. He was an average joe, easy to relate to, but because of that, he isn't very interesting to watch. Nathan, the creator of Ava, however, was complete opposite and in the end I wanted to see more of him and Ava's interactions.
In short, this is a phenomenal piece of sci-fi goodness, I give this one absurdly high recommendations, for all sci-fi and intellectual film fans.

Visually perfect. It has the coolest production design I have ever seen and some of the cleanest, appealing camera work in recent memory. The atmosphere is beyond thick, creating a hypnotic mood that just completely envelops you. Alicia Vikander and Oscar Isaac give Oscar worthy performances, but Gleeson isn't a slouch either. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ex Machina is a great film that intrigues, delights, and makes you think after the movie as well during it. This story follows Caleb, who is a coder who is invited to go to his CEO's estate for a few days. The CEO, who is named Nathan, reveals that he was flown out there to be the human component in a Turing Test with an A.I named Ava. What follows are sessions with Caleb and Ava and subsequent conversations between Nathan and Caleb that eventually reaches a climax. All of the actors, including Domnhall Gleeson and Oscar Issac were awesome, however Alicia Vikander, who plays Ava, stands out among them. The only qualm I have is how the ending was executed with Ava leaving the facility. However, this doesn't detract from the film for me at least. If you're a fan of sci-fi and like smart movies, then go see this movie right now. You will not regret it. Expand

Ex Machina is a story of this massively intelligent computer geek played by Domnhall Gleeson, who wins this huge award at a competition, and as a reward gets to spend a week in the mansion of the inventor of the this world's generic versionEx Machina is a story of this massively intelligent computer geek played by Domnhall Gleeson, who wins this huge award at a competition, and as a reward gets to spend a week in the mansion of the inventor of the this world's generic version of google, Oscar Isaac. For years Isaac has been building this super attractive female A.I, and now he wants Domnhall to put this A.I under various tests to see if they have actually created A.I. On paper the opening act of this movie sounds completely laborious, but it still manages to compel with it's exceptionally well written dialogue which works absurdly well with acting strengths of the 3 main characters. We see from the get go how smart both Domnhall and Isaac really are. It's clear they have found a niche in intellectual dialogue, as every line was delivered as if they fully understood the subject at hand, and their personal chemistry and perplexing sense of humour is down right fascinating. Then we have Alicia Vikander, who plays the A.I. And I can already tell she's already got a long career ahead of her. The way she can be so stiff and robotic yet act purposefully to the contextual drama is beyond me, yet some how she manages to pull it off. I think this movie has kick started the career's of 3 top notch actors. However, it's really the 2nd and the 3rd act that bring this movie up. As the A.I starts reacting to tests in extremely scary ways, conflict and tension grows between the 3 protagonists. But what really brings this aspect to life, is again the superb dialogue. It's worded so cleverly that it's hard to tell any ones true meaning, even in the most simple of lines. It constantly makes you re think who you should really trust with every line spoken. One minute your trust lies in the A.I, but then with another line of dialogue it changes to Isaac, creating nail bitting levels of tension. Despite this, there is one major draw back to this movie. While the dialogue is so complex with several layers of meaning in each and every line, the overall narrative is extremely cliched and goes for the pretentious examination of humanity plot line, resulting in the 3rd act suffering. A lot. However, this is still an excellently rounded and masterfully crafted movie, and a highly recommend watch. Expand

What Ex Machina has done is create a new way of making movies, a better way then "the good ol' days". Between the entrancing performances, the eerie forest retreat and the physcological horror that makes you question your own existence, this movie has made history and launched us into a new age of filmmaking, helmed so far by Alex Garland, the debut director of Ex Machina. The film bottled up so much feeling and suspense that it was hard to comprehend, a strength lacked by Blomkamp's Chappie. The simple truth is that Ex Machina is an honest movie, and although it isn't the better than classics like Pulp Fiction and Citizen Kane, it is perfect for what it is. Expand

The final third of the film reveals deep, feverish sickness and obsession I will not spoil here. Ex Machina is a beautiful film that demonstrates how human beings can be so creative and intelligent but also allow our curiosity to hinder us from distinguishing between what’s real and what’s not. The film stars a programmer played by Domhnall Gleeson (Caleb) who is selected to visit the CEO of his company who is played by Oscar Isaac (Nathan) and must stay in his home for an entire week. Once Caleb arrives at Nathan’s home (in some remote location), he is eager to get started. Once in the house, Caleb discovers why he is really there, to help test an AI (Artificial Intelligence). This is when we meet our third main character Ava (Alicia Vikander) a robot in the form of a female. Once we meet the character Ava, the film’s intensity continues to elevate. While Caleb’s task is to test Ava, he ends up with feelings for her. This storyline is intriguing, unique, makes for a great thriller, and thought provoking film. This is definitely one of my favorite films of the year along with the Kingsman: The Secret Service.

Final Score: 9.7/10

There are so many great things about it, and the one false note I find is in the first act. Many dialogue can be done much better, and "history of God" scene does not work. However, as the movie goes on, the script becomes better and dialogue feels much more genuine. Almost all sci-fi films have a problem with exposition: since the story happens in the future, the audience would not know about it. Ex Machina handles the exposition very well. In the helicopter scene at the beginning, we did not know the boss is rich because someone tells us so, but because the helicopter has been flying on its territory for years. This is a very nice approach to tell the audience an important information. But the greatest thing about the film is its theme. Never have I ever seen a movie so thoroughly and beautifully explored the identity of an A.I.. Ava has been perfectly portrayed as an attractive, creepy, also terrifying character. Overall, the movie is really really good. The music is also suitable for the sci-fi filmmakers out there. A lot of the theories and Ava's characters in the film are worth learning about. If the script for the first act can be done just a little bit better, I would just have no problem with it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A mesmerizing, intelligent, visually stunning yet small movie. We start with the character of Nathan, a brilliant computer genius par excellence with the personality of a bouncer in an expensive whorehouse, which in fact he is, played brilliantly by Oscar Isaac. Imagine Einstein acting like Stalin. His creation, Ava, is adorable, if see through, and the movie toys with whether she's going to be superior or malleable. Caleb, computer programmer and like able geek, is Nathan's foil. Does he also turn out to be Ava's?
Rather than seek for higher ground it is content to flatten out as a tale of a power mad narcissist playing games for his own amusement, and paying the price when the servants revolt.

The ride up to that point is still thrilling however, with strong themes and three exciting performances that will give you at least a little bit of doubt in regards to who can be trusted.

The ominous soundtrack and the fact that I already knew that things weren't what they seemed filled me with unease. This is something Alex Garland made excellent use of to create a very unnerving atmosphere and reveals that come off as even more twisted than they already would have. For me this was freakier than most of the horror films I've watched. Of course the concept of playing mind games with AI already deeply disturbs me. That's not to take away from the performances of Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander though. Those two are key reasons things feel so dangerous.

The back-and-forth pull between which of their characters the protagonist would be better off trusting hinges on the question of what it means to actually be human. Isaac's character may be a little unhinged, but he is another person so it stands to reason that while he is manipulating his house guest in some way, he's probably not a real threat. Ava on the other hand is an inhuman entity unlike anything else Gleeson's character would have previously encountered. We don't know if she feels empathy enough to not slaughter anyone she comes in contact with if she were to be set free. She's clearly hasn't had the most desirable "life." That could very well have led to a hatred of humans. A lifeform she could view as inferior anyway. Vikander gives a suitably alien performance that provides Ava with a certain disconnection from her flesh and blood counterparts. Is she using her sexuality to manipulate a lonely and naïve individual, or is it possible for her to actually feel something more than a need to deceive?

Ex Machina is another movie about the dangers of playing God. It's really good at getting you to ask questions. Certain twists and the ending itself are easy to predict. Meaning that it doesn't deviate too much from convention story-wise. Yet it's never robbed of atmosphere or tension so this is still a very effective thriller. It's also an intelligent piece of science fiction. One with a sexual angle that stems from the very human condition of never wanting to be alone and belief that if we aren't screwing, we aren't living. Alex Garland wasn't just satisfied with getting under our skin. He wanted to get inside our heads as well. And I, for one, think he succeeded rather marvelously. Managing to make something gorgeous in the process.

Ex Machina is a fantastic science fiction think piece. Expertly written and directed by Alex Garland, the movies slowly layers tension upon tension. This is a wonderful, thought provoking piece of cinema.

Thrilling and entertaining concept movie. What starts of with a prize winner and beautiful scenery, ends up in a interesting show of characters and deeper questions. Must see.

A very talented programmer is called to a secret lab to perform the Turing test which is to try to tell whether he communicates with a robot or a human.
Even though he can clearly see that the robot resembling a woman is not human, "she" brings up quite human emotions in him.
The movie brings up many philosophical questions:
is it possible that artificial intelligence, when created, can become hostile towards humans?
is it ethical to destroy a robot that is self-aware of itself? etc.
Far from boring, the movie offers humor and suspense.
In my opinion the movie is done very professionally and with a great style. Of course, it is not real, there are some loose ends and improbable things but it comes with the genre. I enjoyed the movie a lot. If you happen to like sci-fi, it is a "must see".

Ex Machina is a really interesting film that gripped from start to finish with its intense and claustrophobic atmosphere. The three cast members are all excellent with a standout performance from Alicia Vikander who really sells her character in every word and movement. The visual effects are also top notch making for an all-round great sci-fi package.

With simple but strong visual choreography and a plot that poses a profound question on machine vs man, Alex Garland's "Ex Machina" definitely is great must-watch.

Like Sunshine, Ex Machina plays heavily on the psychological aspect of the scenario the movie is set around. However, in this case psychology is directly included in the film and used by Nathan (Oscar Issac) to conduct his experiment--- at his own and other's expense. Very intelligent script and directing-- with the only negative being that the film did feel overly slow paced at times. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A beautifully shot film that takes care in making sure that every frame is visually pleasing. Although Mad Max: Fury Road is getting a lot of hype, for something futuristic this movie is much more thought provoking and satisfying overall. I guess if there is a lesson to be learned here, it is never trust a female robot. Expand
