"Eureka" is more of a meditation on trauma than a movie. It challenges its viewers to live it, not merely watch it. If you find power in simplicity and depth in nuance, you will love this film as I do. Long, gorgeous tracking shots are rarely interrupted. If you find power in simplicity and depth in nuance, you will love this film as I do. Long, gorgeous tracking shots are rarely interrupted. Instead they serve as pale but indelible impressions. Mostly, meaning must be derived or discerned. The viewer is trusted to 'feel' this film, not provided instructions. It offers the slowest of slow burns. The payoff for a patient viewer is extraordinary. Though visually austere, it is a rich, lush film.

In a time of incessant visual stimulation, a film that moves as deliberately as "Eureka" might simply seem boring. Moreover, not everyone is inclined to devote three and a half hours to a film with little action and even less dialogue. I recognized that what I experienced as sublime, might be maddening to others. "Eureka" demands that its viewers surrender to it. If you're not willing to take the long slow ride, don't give this film a second thought -- it won't be worth your time.… Expand
