It tells its story not through dialogue, but largely through powerful visuals: the anguished and fearful looks on the faces of the characters, the hopeless waiting on the beaches by masses of people, the frustration of the fighter pilot, the panic of the drowning, and so on.

While it kept me entertained, I think most people are heaping acclaim on the movie simply for this novel way of approaching things. To me, doing things a new way does not automatically a masterpiece make. For some reason, the director unnecessarily played around with the timeline. You'll see a flip from daytime to nighttime and back again between scenes. I think the director dispensed with a coherent timeline in favor of portraying a certain emotional feeling, but it doesn't always work well.

As visual storytelling, it does a great job. On any other level, it's simply decent. If you're interested, go see it in theaters. Unless you have a good sound system, you'd be missing out on half the experience otherwise.

Do not buy into the critical hype. This is an ordinary war film at best.

Pro:
The sense of desolation on the beach is decently represented.

Con:
The scale of the evacuation never hit home, 1000 ships participated, and some 84 allied aircraft were lost. I got no sense of scale from the movie, except troops on the beach.
Lack of character depth and development
Poor aircraft CGI (patchy, there are scenes where Hurricanes are shown banking perfectly together, which ripped me out of the immersion)
Strangely, no sense of urgency around anything that happened.

Because that's the only reason I went and saw it, and I was unimpressed. The plot was simultaneously boring and confusing and none of the characters had any depth. Most of them didn't even have names. I honestly don't know why I was supposed to care about anything that was happening onscreen. Like, I didn't enjoy watching people die - I'm not a monster. But it's hard to understand why this story was told. It was just a story of how sad war is, and even then, it didn't even do a great job of telling that. There's a million war movies more compelling and meaningful than this "artsy" **** Just cause it's sad doesn't make it a good story. Expand

My suggestion is wait until this movie is on cable TV next year instead of spending good money seeing this movie at the theatre. Trailers always show the best scenes of a movie, and in the case of Dunkirk, the trailer was the best part.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is a phenomenon in filmmaking these days I like to call the "Gravity" effect, named after the ridiculous Sandra Bullock film in which a truckload of spiffy CGI and cinematography was wrapped around a nifty space premise producing a preposterous and scientifically implausible bore. It seems to have taken over Hollywood, and "Dunkirk" is its latest manifestation. As a history teacher very familiar with the Dunkirk story, I was eager to see the intense drama exhibited on the big screen, and superlative reviews from everyone assured me it had to be good. Nope - it was just like "Gravity". There was no story, it was merely one perilous situation after the other. Over and over and over again, people I could not care less about were in danger. In "Gravity" it was Sandra Bullock in space, here it was British troops in the waters off the coast of France. Over and over and over - interminable anguish splashed in our faces. While Christopher Nolan's technical work with the CGI and film editing was terrific, I can't believe he didn't just sit back and say, "With all this filmmaking technology at our fingertips why have a engaging story with flowing plot lines and defined characters? Let's just pound them with the horrors of war and make it so the viewer can FEEL IT." (Needless to say do not see this film if you are aquaphobic.) There were also the extraordinarily annoying scenes like those when the car doesn't start and you need to drive off to avoid something very bad - in this movie it was the gun that malfunctions or the hatch on the plane won't open as it sinks into the sea. Please. Then there is the completely unnecessary tussle on a small pleasure yacht that results in the death of a sympathetic character - oh my. Sorry but I'm sick of directors taking my feelings and ruthlessly yanking them for the purpose of trying to tell us what a grand filmmaker they are. At least Nolan didn't move the camera all around making the scenes artificially jagged and distorted - thank you! Still, after the 57th time we had to tortuously endure wondering whether or not people were going to die horrific deaths - this one having to do with men in the water trying not to let the surface flames reach their oil-soaked bodies - I was done. I left. So yeah, count this one among "My Blue Heaven" and "Grease" as one of those terrible films that I actually walked out on. Expand

Fails utterly as a war and history film. Decent as thriller.
Very surprising how metacritic users give this film such high praise.

Dunkirk is essentially Nolan's excuse to make another one of his thriller, the WW2 setting is just accessory. As a thriller, it delivers. Coupled with the stressful (but repetitive, one of his weakest) score from Hans Zimmer, the film always keeps the viewer under suspense.

However, in all other regards, the film is an abject failure. As a historical WW2 film, it fails because it is not realistic. Every shot is obviously filmed in stylistic ways to deliver suspense, but not realism. It is opera, almost. You do not see the Germans (even less than in a Spielberg film), you do not see real combat. You see bullets coming from nowhere and killing people. You see and hear bombs falling. But you dont see the enemy.

On a historical realism level, it is also completely out of place. Dunkirk is a ghost city, not a city full of scared French civilians. Again, the German Army (at least Recon troops) is nowhere to be seen. I did not even feel the scale of such a magnificient evacuation. I did not feel like 300,000+ people were just evacuated from that city. I felt like a couple line of people on board some destroyers, were saved. Not to mention the film itself is chock full of historical myths and inaccuracies, which I would have expected such a great director as Nolan to not make. The biggest myth being that the 300,000+ people were saved by the "small boats", when in fact most of them (at least 1/3rd French, which you also do not see in the film) were evacuated on board large ships (as historical footage on youtube shows). To summarize, the entire film takes the script from the most ridiculous British ego-stoking mythical writing of this battle. "300,000 men on that beach, thousands of little boats, in an élan of British National pride, came to save the soldiers, etc". Instead of what should have been a gritty battle in the streets, mass of people on destroyers, etc.

Finally, my biggest gripe, above and beyond the repetitiveness of the film and historical inaccuracy, is the laughable PG rating. The rating turns whats supposed to be a gut-wrenching war film, where I expect flak-decapitated soldiers, Stuka bombs disembowelling people, dead bodies rotting on the beach, etc...Into a completely colourless film. The entire film is strangely grey and dark, and when a bomb falls or shot is fired, bodies fly in the air (completely intact) without even a drop of blood on their face.

All in all, this film is a pretty thriller, not the realistic war film I expected Master Nolan to produce. And its a shame because the Battle of France (and generally the Western Front before the Americans came into the war late in 1944), is a very unexplored setting that merits much better.

Nolan, you disappoint me.

Within every world war 2 film there is a need for the director to paint the second world war as a **** war and indeed it was, the most destructive conflicit on earth, millions dead both on battlefield and homefront, and if you soak up enoughWithin every world war 2 film there is a need for the director to paint the second world war as a **** war and indeed it was, the most destructive conflicit on earth, millions dead both on battlefield and homefront, and if you soak up enough propaganda from both films and history class was a true battle between good and evil. Nolan in the beautifully directed Dunkirk wastes no time at all getting to the heart of what he believes truely matters in a war film and that is war itself in a mature film that finally treats the audience as intelligent people by not wasting time with characters who droll on about how bad the war is (which isnt always as a bad thing) but instead cutting the proberbial bullshi*t and giving the audience three intense perspective from air, sea and land as Nolan illustrates how things move from bad to much worse.

Now in this review im not really going to talk about the acting in the film, because as a far as character goes there isnt much, which is perfect in the case of this film, hell some characters who last throughout the entire film are nameless. By not creating individual identities for each of these character they ultimately become blank templates for the audience to latch their own personalities onto, which is great because you feel every heart drop, every pound of terror becuase you do not know what is going to happen next.

The writing in this film is of a gold standard. When finishing a film im always quick to point out stupid decisions made by characters in a film, from walking straight into death to straight up making the most baffling choices possible because plot. However Dunkirk is great in creating rational decisions in an otherwise irrational world, for example people wanting to stay above deck so they dont drown when their boat is sunk by german u-boats. This greatly helps the progression of the plot as i can connect more so with the situation at dunkirk as a whole rather then a few people who were at dunkirk.

Working hand in hand with stunning visuals is the soundtack by hanz zimmer whose eary music deliever on building a tension filled atmosphere in which from the first beat we can tell something is going to go terribly wrong before the threats comes into focus serving as a testiment to great filmaking of the 21st century. Practical effects do not go unnoticed too with a lack of CGI serving a refreshing idea that helps deleiever both scope and realism to a war genre that has been constantly oversatuated with special effect to make war look as awsome as possible.

Go see dunkirk if you are a lover of history or a lover of film and you will not be disapointed.

Dunkirk is a great war movie, possibly one of the best ever made, and it actually shows respect for the victims of the war, the nameless soldiers, with no Rambo-style shenanigans.

The movie is about the evacuation of more than 300,000 English soldiers who got trapped at Dunkirk during the early stages of World War 2, and shows how the UK managed to save most of the stranded men through enlisting the help of many civilian boats rather than large warships (which got routinely bombed and sunk by the enemy, anyway). Despite the final outcome being well known, the movie builds suspense through great cinematography, editing and music, and never becomes boring.

The story is presented in a non linear way through three interweaving perspectives, in the air, land and sea. There are a few characters who get more screentime than others but there is no main protagonist, and little dialogue, because the movie isn't about an individual hero. It's about the thousands of men who are anxious to escape from Dunkirk alive while waiting for help from their country.

It's obvious that characters can't develop meaningfully in such a movie and it surprises me that critics complain about this, because, who cares if Tommy has a girlfriend back home? There is no place for personal stories in the fields of battle, all that matters during enemy bombings and air raids is to survive. One curious choice is that the movie constantly avoids to explicitly name the Nazis or even just the Germans, referring to them as "the enemy" instead. Nazi soldiers don't even show up on camera, rather they are heard shooting or just hinted at, maybe because the director wanted to emphasize the anxiety of soldiers to escape from the enemy, any enemy, not just the Nazis. I also liked the inclusion of Winston Churchill's famous "we shall fight... we shall never surrender" speach in the newspaper in the end, read by one of the evacuated soldiers.

All in all, Dunkirk is another great Christopher Nolan movie.

Officer states we are like fish in a barrel as you look back down the pier towards the beach as hundreds of non wounded are standing in line. A look on the beach shows dozens of lines of men standing out in the open all in neat rows waiting on ships that aren’t there. German planes strafing and bombing the beach all the while you have a town right behind with all types of empty buildings where you could be taking shelter and be out of sight. Men taking fire in a beached ship and out of 300,000 men not one group got together to recon for the firing Germans. Not sure if this movie was actually trying to convey how terrible this situation was for the stranded at Dunkirk or to make the British military leadership look like buffoons. This movie was way overhyped. Not the worst movie I have ever watched but it could have been much more than what it was. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Christopher Nolan’s movies over the year have become a huge craze and have a sincere fan following. With Dunkirk Mr. Nolan has taken a much different work in his resume. I would start with one of the mostly compelling part of his movies.
Background Score
Only work I admire of Hans Zimmer is with Christopher Nolan, Whether it’s TDK or Inception or the best to date Interstellar, Hans has always proven to be diverse and mind bending. But with Dunkirk he has gone way too far. Even from the start score is way too heavy for nerves, movie itself is very short but that intensity and pressure is unnecessary from the scenes which should have been all about sound editing and mixing instead of relying on same technique as Chasing scene from TDK and Docking scene from Interstellar. Hans’ work is good but is not needed at most of the time as it makes it all more artificial rather real.
Memento Mori
We might have missed Chris’ brother Jonathan Nolan, who was absent from writing credits (may be too busy with Westworld) 3rd time since Chris’ breakout film Memento back in 2000. Jonathan was not involved in Insomnia 2003, fan favorite Inception 2010 and now Dunkirk. However he was present in spirit of Memento, a movie which was adapted from his then unpublished short story Memento Mori. Memento was built on a complex web of time lapse and chronology so is Dunkirk. Three different stories of different time period all in 106 minutes and running parallel. To avoid confusion it was displayed at the start how will it be. Although it is beautiful idea, however bringing together three different time periods, by pulling one way too long and shrinking one way too much made it feel uneven and hard to relate to. Movie showed Mole for 7 days and yet not a single night. Mainly because it wanted to focus on its connection to the rest of the two stories.
Chaos without Drama
One thing Christopher Nolan is notorious to create since TDK is the chaos. That’s something movie shines on. Whether it’s the Mole or Air, there is huge fear over the fate of vessel, plane and the lives. Among characters the confusion and fear has played the best, although the lead felt weaker without any outcome and reaction. Drama throughout was cut off, an element which was criticized to cover up the scientific gaps in Interstellar’s plot. At some level it worked as it maintained the tone of the movie but at other side movie was losing its soul over that. Tag line gave it all
Usually it’s the trailer, but here it was the tag line “When 400,000 men couldn't get home, home came for them.” For the people who had no idea of events at Dunkirk, who were only out to see another of Christopher Nolan movie, there was nothing left but Kenneth Branagh’s overly expressed emotions as movie moves into the final segment. Beside the plotline, the fabrication of one day at sailing into one week at mole had also taken most of the suspense away when audience know it from the start that home is on its way. Home being many ships only focused on one. With the movie which propelled ensemble cast, focusing on one ship was narrow for the story. Ship itself was sailed by “Mark Rylance” who was miscast for the role as he could not bring what was required to appear as a man willingly walking into the war without any aid. Good thing is…
Those are too many negative words but there are good things about Dunkirk, which could be the Direction. Even with all the wrong choice Nolan made, still movie keeps audience captive at point. Another quality is by default its length which does not make the viewer suffer through completed of second and sometime third hour which most of the war movies do. Cinematography is very good and so is Sound editing and mixing but unfortunately excessive use of background score has taken over those departments. Over all Dunkirk is a nice job but it does not fill up the hopes one walks into theatre with.

No german soldiers to be seen just an invisible enemy apart from some CGI warplanes. Dunkirk didn't try to depict the true horrors of war. Totally the opposite of Saving private Ryan, Hacksaw ridge etc.
Christopher Nolan wanted a suspense film, and not a war film as such, and yet this is a failure too, as I had no empathy with any of the characters weather they lived or died. Hans Zimmer is a great music composer, however the music was supposed to add some intensity and suspense to the film and yet I just found it annoying as it was constant throughout. The only shock and horror I found regarding this film are the positive reviews. This film is for snowflakes and people who suffer from a very nervous disposition.

It was unrelentingly loud (perhaps partly a problem with the theater we attended) and boring – unless you’ve never seen a war movie before. What annoyed me the most was how all the soldiers looked alike, except for the principal “star” cast (Rylance, Branaugh, Hardy, Murphy). I realize this is what happens with CGI – but really did all 300,000 of the British “common” soldiers need to be the same age, have the same hair (longish, black, wavy), the same height, weight, build, etc.)? I have been aware of CGI somewhat in crowd scenes (for example, in Gladiator), but this film was full of unrelenting close-ups of clones. Tom Hardy and Mark Rylance were excellent, but Branaugh and his “stiff upper lip” was one of the most clichéd performances I have ever seen him give. Thank God, Nolan didn’t drag Churchill in. Expand

As most“Dunkirk” is a film written and directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Kenneth Branaugh and Tom Hardy and a cast of thousands, or hundreds, depending on how much you take into account the Computer Generated Imagery's special effects. As most WWII buffs know, and certainly all Britishers, “Dunkirk” is the story of how scores of private British small boat owners traveled across the English Channel to rescue many of the British and French soldiers who were left stranded on this infamous French beach. This is indeed one of the most inspiring stories to come out of the war and yet, to my disappointment, the film manifests no heart or soul. Although there are plenty of dogfights in the air and strafings on the ground, the film dedicates most of its footage to one particular boat owner and three Spitfire pilots with confusing battle scenes filling the rest of the screen. Instead of the epic and awesome story that it attempts to convey, it is grossly lacking in depth and although Mr. Nolan receives a credit as the writer, there are probably more words written in this review than spoken in the entire film. Perhaps, by anticipating that the film would live up to the great story it tries to tell, my unrealized expectations created the letdown I felt after I left the theater. I give this film a 6 and suggest that a better writer and director could have gotten to the truly great story that Mr. Nolan unfortunately left stranded somewhere on the French shore. Expand

To make such a large scale film with such precise level of detail is Nolan's greatest achievement to date. The acting is superb all across the board (Styles is the biggest surprise here) though Rylance stands out (possible nominations). Zimmer's soundtrack guides the pace of the film, and it's both harrowing and beautiful. The editing and cinematography are stellar as the film covers a wide range of scenes: from areal battle views to underwater, drowning scenes. Nolan is able to make us feel as though we are there, confused and terrified of what is to come; it doesn't even need to show you the enemy or bloody scenes...
I will say it's a stressful film; it's grim and dull. I laughed once and it was of irony. It's not a film for everyone, and it's not as fun to watch as many of Nolan's other films.

I mean, really, there is no story here. It's a series of anecdotes. It's a Studs Terkel oral history with newsreel footage substituted for words.

Watch this if you must. Myself, I'll re-watch a film with characters and story, such as Mrs. Miniver (1942).

At first, I have to say something to people, which have problems with loud sounds:
Don`t watch this movie.
The runtime of 100 minutes is filled with noises as well as with stressfull situations. And that`s exactly why it`s not just a typical movie about war with any kind of patriotism or embellishment. The focus is clearly on presenting the harshness of suriving in an area full of death and despair. As I already said, the runtime of this movie is onyl at 100 minutes, 100 extremely thrilling and rousing minutes.
It`s one of those movies you have to watch in cinema. Watching it at home on your average TV is probably not even half the experiene you can get there.
Christopher Nolan made again with "Dunkirk" a fascinating masterpiece, which is really hard to compare with his previous movies. There is pretty much nothing to criticize about it, just watch it in cinema, if you don`t have problems with loud sounds.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last great movie about WWII in the modern era was "Saving Private Ryan" and in my opinion this movie joins that elite company.

Nolan's attention to detail is present and up to its usual high standard, but what he also captured was the sense of isolation of those trapped Soldiers. They were trapped on a beach, surrounded by an enemy who was seemingly attacking at will, leaving not a single safe place to hide--not even the ships coming to rescue them. Such situations push men to their limits, showing their true character, and such character wasn't always good.

I serve in my country's armed forces and I have deployed into harm's way so I think that made me more sensitive that these men may have been Soldiers but they were still people doing whatever they could to survive such desperate times.

I will be very surprised if this movie is forgotten come award season.

He did wonders with 2014’s Interstellar (despite some flaws), Now we are in 2017 with yet another game changing Christopher Nolan Movie – DUNKIRK, The Movie Title as well as its history might be a mystery to many except people from Britain or France or some history buffs. It was something new to me; the only thing that attracted me to this project was Nolan.
I am overjoyed to say that I was able to catch this movie before it’s official release in India and was blown way with the ambitions this movie has, From the opening scene you’re on the beaches of Dunkirk with the 4,00,000 soldiers. There are no front and centre characters in the movie, it is not a movie about that but it is a movie about their struggle to reach Home despite the fact they could actually see it but couldn’t reach it because more often than not whenever they tried, they died. Land (1 Week) , Sea (1 Day) and Air (1 Hour) are three intercutting stories that take place. This style of Nolan really works because of his direction and Lee Smith who did the editing. The way they cut to the 3 different stories is perfect; everything works the way they want to. I won’t say too much about the whole story of the movie because one should experience this in theatres.
Dunkirk was shot with approx. 75% through IMAX cameras & yes it was worth it. Hoyte van Hoytema is The Cinematographer of Dunkirk Movie that did an incredible job to capture some GORGEOUS shots; he with Nolan made it possible for the audience to be immersed when the action was in the air with Spitfires. This movie deserves to be seen in the best possible theatre you can go to.
Some people might have an opinion that a movie needs to make us really care about characters so that we are able to feel what they feel, If you are one of them this movie doesn’t has that. It doesn’t shows you Soldiers talking about them having a family or a child to make us relate to them but it flows with a strong yet a simple idea which is for a Human to reach Home. Dunkirk’s cast includes some famous actors of Britain and some newcomers. Everyone does Justice to his role; everyone embodies the best one can to be a soldier in pursuit to SURVIVE. Among many The Shivering Soldier (Cillian Murphy) to Farrier (Tom Hardy) to Tommy (Fionn Whitehead) and also Alex (Harry Styles) impressed me with their acting.
Finally coming to the score, as always Hanz Zimmer knocks it out of the park with yet another moving and suspense filled music that instrumental from the start of Dunkirk. The Ticking Clock sound makes this movie an edge of the seat thriller. Can’t say enough about the score it is amazing. Thus Nolan redefines this Genre as well of which we will see in the upcoming movies with this Genre. Dunkirk is brilliant might be Nolan’s best after The Dark Knight. A Masterpiece in any reality.

That was a genius way of telling the story. And you get it only after the second viewing. The first movie ever when you watch it again and you see not just a few new things - you see 50% new things. And understand that story was so much bigger than you thought. To everyone - watch this movie again and you understand why critics love it so much and what is so cool about this movie. Expand

What's more, unlike many other war movies, this offering effectively depicts man at both his worst and his best in the same film, quite an accomplishment to be sure. Director Christopher Nolan has clearly knocked it out of the park with this one. Expand

It happens in a mashup of 3 time spans: a week on the beach, a day on the English Channel and an hour in the sky. This unique approach usually makes sense, but is rendered slightly confusing by the dialogue, which is often hard to decipher (the accents and the music mix). Still, director Christopher Nolan has crafted a masterpiece of epic cinema with a continually tense undertone. Several POVs provide the human angle, but it's less about personal endurance and more about desperate survival. The action scenes are less explicitly violent than "Saving Private Ryan" or "Hacksaw Ridge," but still manage to create cringeworthy moments. An enthralling approach to telling a war story. Expand

And for all its gritty authenticity, the film is weirdly unrealistic in its portrayal of the battlefield, especially in the almost total absence of blood and gore. While it is hard for the film-goer not to be moved by the individual acts of heroism that marked the Dunkirk operation, and impressed by Nolan's visual innovations, this viewer was left feeling manipulated, unconnected with the characters and underwhelmed by the dramatic content. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went into this movie knowing absolutely nothing about it. I was very disappointed. I wasn't invested in any of the characters, seriously couldn't give a crap about anyone, especially the silent protagonist or boy who dies slowly from a whack on the head. The movie had every cliche and war trope. There is literally nothing that made this movie stand out. The ending was okay. Hammy, but a jolly, cheerful 'yay-we're-gonna-be-okay~~' type of ending. Too cheerful to be realistic. Expand

To begin with, you have no character development at all, all characters are just like ants, meaningless. The scope of the movie is supposed to be about an army of 400 000 men, stranded in a city and how they were rescued. The highest number of men you ever see in one scene is perhaps one thousand, and that's a view of the entire beach. And what are they doing? Just standing in line waiting for boats to arrive. So instead of an epic saga, what you'll get is basically an old fisherman and his kid sailing on the English channel, two fighter pilots flying around in the air and a dozen random soldiers doing nothing. You see three-four airplanes in the air (in total, throughout the entire movie) and you get to see perhaps two destroyers. Other than that there's about one hundred fishing ships. This movie might be worth the watch if you have nothing else to do, but it definitely does not hold up to the hype. It's a mediocre movie at best! Expand

It’s a thriller that puts you on the edge of your seat throughout the runtime and only lets up for small amounts of time. What makes this movie unique is that it doesn’t focus on the characters, but the event itself. In most war movies, we focus on a single character as they go through an event. In this case, the movie focuses on the event itself. It does focus particularly on a soldier played by One Direction’s Harry Styles, a father played by Mark Rylance, and a pilot played by Tom Hardy. However, there’s no backstory on any of these characters. Instead, we only see them as they go through this event. We see from their perspective, the events of Dunkirk.

The movie has 3 different plotlines. One focuses on the soldiers stuck on the beach. The second focuses on a dad and his two kids who answer the call and head to Dunkirk to aid in the rescue, despite the danger involved in doing that. The third focuses on airforce pilots and their efforts to take down Nazi warplanes. Nolan switches between the 3 plots throughout the movie and they all join together by the end. This movie is a little under 2 hours long and it gets into the action almost immediately after it starts. There isn’t much backstory provided, so it’s important to research the background of Dunkirk before you go and watch this.

Dunkirk is more of an experience than a movie. The camerawork makes us feel that we’re there right alongside these people. It makes us feel that we’re in the war, instead of watching the war. The sound work influences this as well. When bullets are fired, they are as loud as real bullets. When planes approach the soldiers on the beach, their roar will almost make your ears ring. When a ships sinks, the camera is at water level showing struggling soldiers trying to escape. The camera shows the airplane dogfight scenes in detail. Since minimal computer effects are used, it makes it all the more real. In fact, some of the small boats that were used in the movie were the actual boats that aided in the rescue in 1940. It all feels as if a cameraman were there with the troops in 1940, filming what was happening in real time. It makes the movie very realistic and horrifying. You’ll feel exhausted (in a good way) by the end.

Dunkirk’s also almost a silent movie as the characters say few lines. The action and soundtrack propel it forward. While it could have provided more backstory on the event and the characters, Dunkirk is a fantastic movie. It’s not as memorable as other movies, but the experience you feel while watching it is unlike any other film. I’d give this a 90%. It’s the type of movie that’s made for the big screen and you’re doing yourself a disservice by not seeing it in a theater. Dunkirk is a unique experience that’s worth seeing. It is a fitting tribute to the troops who served there.

From one film to the next, he ceaselessly pushes the boundaries of his craft, insisting upon large format cameras, actual film, and ever more complicated shots.

As a result--technically speaking--'Dunkirk' meets or exceeds every expectation. The expansive beach landscapes, claustrophobic interior settings, and countless practical effects all lend a sense of heightened realism to this historical drama.

Yet, it's the story itself that lacks the intensity Nolan was aiming for. The three vantage point structure detracts from the overall immersion into the film. Cillian Murphy's character is both confounding and frustratingly hollow. And there is a fair amount of repetitiveness to the plot. It should be noted that Hans Zimmer's score is nothing short of remarkable and serves as a much need thread of consistency throughout the film. However, when history has its say, 'Dunkirk' will likely reside on a lesser tier of Nolan's filmography.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overhyped, and ultimately a disappointment.

It is great to see a World War II movie come out this year. It is even better that it isn't American centric. I love my country, but we have made it this idea we won World War II by ourselves which isn't the case.

The movie has some pretty spots, taking the story of three groups that intertwine. The first group about British Spitfires (fighter planes) trying to give some cover, and engaging with German air force. Resulting in Tom Hardy having the only interesting action in the movie.

The second story about a small civilian ship as part of the armada of civilians coming to rescue the trapped soldiers and the story that unfolds when they pick up a soldier from a sunk ship.

Finally the third story is about two soldiers trying to survive on the beach, and wait for the rescue coming from the civilian ships.

It was interesting that all three stories occurred over different period of time but ended together. The fighters story was within an hour, the ship within a few hours, and the soldiers within a couple of days. I think this could work in other movies, and I suspect this will spark a lot of copycats for that style. We will hate this just as much as other niche storytelling styles within a few years.

The problem is there is actually very little story. It is hard to see that because the story keeps jumping around, but when you step back the story itself lacks anything. I have seen documentaries on Dunkirk that had more story. I don't know if there was never a full story, or if maybe the story got lost when Nolan was trying to break it up to fight the weird timing, but either way it is pretty barren.

I cared nothing about the soldiers at all, Nolan provided nothing for the audience to care about. Tom Hardy was interesting, but that was because of him, not because the story gave him anything. The only story I felt a little compelling was about the civilian ship, its crew of two teens and an older man and how they handle picking up a survivor. Even this story though was lacking on details and when you step back you wonder where the other half of the story went.

I will admit the possibility that the hype was so big that my expectations may be too high. I was told huge action sequences, and I didn't see that. This isn't Saving Private Ryan, or The Battle of Britain even. It was fairly boring for me, and I can really like slow movies. The movie has a short run time, but I was still looking at the clock before it was over.

The good: It is an interesting way to tell a story, and it is nice to see a non-American based World War II movie.

The bad: The pacing was slow, very little action or story, and very overhyped.

This is a movie I would recommend if you are a die hard World War II fan, but even then wait until it hits Netflix.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can't honestly say i see what everyone here is raving about. It's a masterfully shot film, with a story, and progression about as interesting as watching paint dry. the entire movie was a repetitive arc of events. The acting is almost null as there hardly any lines of dialogue. The story telling.... there was honestly no story, it was rather a collage of sequences without beginning or end. A sort of mishmash of unfortunate events that the characters trudge through at brisk pace. No actor stood out, no life stories told, nothing and nobody to care about. The horrors of war weren't even demonstrably shown as it was in PG13 meaning nothing of too much intensity was allowed. I think it rather disappointing that everyone (critics and users alike) reviewing this is putting this film in the same league as higher acclaimed war movies. Somehow nolan even managed to make the dog fights seem rather unimpressive and tepid. I can't say that i felt throughoughly immersed, entertained, or in love with any of the characters enough to give this movie anything close to a solid rating. i rather think it unfortunate that Nolan failed to create some kind of story arc with natural movie mechanics and rather decided to go with this bland hobglob mish-mash of repetitive tepid sequences that one somehow can manage to call a film. One can only dream.
Edit: upon second viewing in imax rather than regular, I can see why people were praising the cinematography and sound so much more than i thought was necessary. both image quality, shots, and sound were top notch. But the sound still managed to deafen and hurt my ears during certain scenes, and take away from the visual side quite a bit. Nonetheless Every scene has a powerful sense of immersion, sincerity in reasoning. This movie is more 'in the action' rather than telling a story, but in that style it quite succeeded. I recommend people who saw it in a regular theater to go see it in 70mm or imax definitely a different experience altogether. I boost my original somewhat reactionary score from 3/10 to 6/10.... I think i overreacted merely because of the pacing, and how little i cared about the cinematography on the regular theater screen.
